Christmas for everyone

Leading up to this issue, MLL asked locals how they celebrate Christmas. No matter their religious or cultural background everybody said they celebrated Christmas with a tree and gift giving (See page 7). It seems that Christmas has become a universal festival of goodwill.
the whole motivation behind the celebration of Christmas was an attempt to take over a pagan festival in order to serve a Christian purpose." There is no mention of Christmas in the bible. So if we view Christmas as a celebration of new life in its broadest sense, everyone can be included and we can celebrate together with renewed optimism for the coming year. At the MLL office, festoons of sparkling lights are hanging from the heights and angels have settled on our roof. Nigella and I love the community atmosphere of December in our street (Parkview Drive) where neighbours sit on the sidewalk eating and chatting till late into the evening.
If we accept that the origins of Christmas are a Roman festival marking the winter solstice (northern hemisphere) and the coming of spring, it can be enjoyed by everyone. The Roman festival was called Come and see the Saturnalia. It was a time house in our street of gift giving, drinking, that last year won the Award winning Christmas display in Parkview Drive singing in the Real Christmas Award for the Best Christmas streets (a precursor of Display in MLL, decorate an angel at the MLL house, modern caroling) and merriment to celebrate and join us for carol singing, led by a music quartet, "new growth" and "rebirth". But before Christians on Sat 10 December at 7.30pm in Parkview Reserve become too upset, all this is acknowledged by opposite the winning house. All welcome. the former General Secretary of the Anglican Church in Australia who agrees that Saturnalia MLL will be back in January. was 'highjacked' by the Christian Church in the 4th century. He says: "There is a curious irony about attempts by Christian people and churches Editor to try to "put Christ back into Christmas" when "Living Legend" City of Salisbury

Behind the scenes of Mawson Lakes Living A lot of people work behind the scenes to bring Mawson Lakes Living to you each month.
My thanks to all who make this little magazine such a delightful and highly-valued publication. Without you the magazine could not exist.
These community-spirited people help me in many different ways - delivering the magazine, proofreading, taking photographs, checking the accounts, designing and organising advertisements and assisting with IT and PR.
I have captured on camera some helpers out and about dropping the magazine into letterboxes or helping in other ways. A lot of people doing a little bit can have a huge impact. Editor Linda

How much do you weigh? A large-sized man approached the ticket counter of Qantas on a flight from Adelaide to Sydney to enjoy Christmas with his family. The plane was very full of passengers and their baggage so the reservations attendant asked:
"How much do you weigh Sir?" "With or without clothes?" asked the passenger. "Well," said the attendant
"How do you intend to travel?"

Bird Sanctuary On the Mawson Lakes doorstep an environmental sanctuary just for birds has been declared. The Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary has been upgraded in status to a National Park, which stretches for 60km from the Baker Inlet (behind The Watershed Cafe) up the coast of St Vincent Gulf to Port Parham. The Sanctuary takes in the old salt fields and will provide a safe haven for migratory and local birds. It is the first National Park created in SA in the last 10 years. See the video at www.naturalresources.sa.gov.au - Chris Purnell, Birdlife Australia Taxed Out Your editorial in November is propaganda. Adelaide is not the best city to live in. My family has decided to leave SA because the costs for property and business owners imposed by the government is crippling - to start, there’s the Emergency Services Levy, the River Murray Levy, the Land Tax Levy, Payroll Tax, Stamp Duties etc. Add to this the cost of electricity and water which is the highest in Australia, huge licence fees and high traffic fines. Then when the state government is finished with us we get slugged with high local council rates and registration fees for everything. Businesses in SA are going to the wall. In my street alone there are 3 retrenched men in despair. We have liked living in Mawson Lakes, but when we couldn’t get our kids into the local school we knew it was time to leave. This letter is to say goodbye to our neighbours and friends in Mawson Lakes. Thank you for your friendship to us and our children. - Clare David Cruise sickness My friends talk about the pleasures of cruising so I gave it a try on a trip for a week. Never again. Sickness pervaded the ship. Gastroenteritis confined miserable travellers to their cabins for days. Other passengers were coughing everywhere and my travelling companion and I got 'cruise flu' and were dreadfully sick for 2 weeks after our return home. Travel insurers have paid out more than $50 million for cruise-related illness claims since 2014 - more than any other holiday claims. - Sick Traveller

Selling off Mawson Lakes From comments in MLL/Sept I realize that I’m not alone in the observation that Mawson Lakes is slowly being turned into a site for mass construction with no regard for the voice and interest of the residents and the maintenance of the community environment. We too have tried unsuccessfully to object to yet another tenement type construction on a prime lake frontage in ‘The Cove’ area. A year ago, we were told that this plot could not be divided and only one home could be built on it. Yet now the Council has given approval to a developer to put up multiple-rowhouses? The action of the council has left us angry and frustrated. It will destroy the ambience of our surroundings and obscure the beautiful lake frontage that we currently enjoy hence our property stands to lose value. And now the approval for the unnecessary Aldi to disturb and disrupt our established community square! It is time we residents took a stand to preserve our interests. I was unaware that we have council representatives and I would be interested to understand what their role is in supporting ML residents and their concerns. If any residents are thinking similarly to us and our neighbours, I encourage you to speak up and let’s make a concerted effort to save our community from the developer’s bulldozer. L Walker, ‘The Cove’ Booming Business Thanks for the Mazda ads in MLL and your excellent service. We couldn’t be happier. Things are tracking really well with the new business. LIFESPAN OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE?
"In our Hindu culture we do not have a tree, but living in Australia we put one up the week before Christmas for the children." Ramesh Adiga and his daughter Rashmi "Our tree goes up early (mid Nov) and comes down late so we get maximum joy out of Christmas." - Justin Penman and Macho
"We put it up early in December and leave our decorations up till mid Jan so we can enjoy them for as long as possible because they take a lot of work.Lauren Rauda with daughters Estella and Elise "I was born in Spain and we follow my childhood tradition of celebrating on the 24th of December. We put up our tree one week before, have christmas dinner at 10pm and at midnight we open our presents. I take the tree down on the 9th of January which is my birthday." - Ivonne Toro
"We go to the Christmas Pageant in November each year and come home all inspired to get our Christmas decorations up. They stay up until the first weekend after New Year. - Pat Caruso
"In India our main religious festival is Diwali in October where we celebrate the triumph of good over evil with a fabulous display of lights, but now that Christmas is becoming universal as an end of year celebration we put up a tree in December and engage in the festivities in ML." Mid Term Council Report by Cr Steve White I am now two years into my four year term as one of your two elected members representing Mawson Lakes and parts of Pooraka and Parafield Gardens at the City of Salisbury. Last year at this time I reported on my hopes for the following developments to occur, and I'm happy to report on progress: 1. Bike Trail/Walking Connection from Shoalhaven and Cascades to Mawson Central and the Bridges. A causeway is planned across Dry Creek connecting via Ridley St. to a ramp and steps up the Shoalhaven side of the Elder Smith Rd bridge ramp. Access to these from Cascades will be along Augustine St. The steps and ramp will provide access to the station and bridge footpath which will be turned into a combined bike/pedestrian route into Mawson Central and looping back underneath to the Bridges. Design is now underway at State Government and we await the official go ahead in the near future. This connection has been many years coming and it is great to see we are finally almost there. 2. Child-safe fence around Shearwater Playground. A safety fence to prevent young children wandering onto nearby roads or lake has been approved around the Shearwater playground and community consultation has been completed. 3. Adult Exercise Park. The City of Salisbury is installing adult exercise parks throughout the City. There is one at Unity Park on South Tce. Pooraka and another at Carisbrooke Park. Each is slightly different. Last year younger residents requested Street Gym exercise equipment here at Mawson Lakes and design consultation has commenced. The Mawson Lakes exercise park will probably be close to Dry Creek Linear Park and will also include some equipment for older residents. Anyone wanting to make their contribution can contact Craig Johansen at Council on 84068505. Years ago there had been a request for an exercise park for senior citizens near Pledger Wetlands but when I checked the interest for this seems to have waned.

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 114 - December 2016
Mawson Lakes has always had a number of combined bike and pedestrian ways. To ensure safety along these and at points where they cross roads Council is starting a program to put pavement markings and giveway signs to ensure pedestrian and cyclists keep on the left side of the pavement to avoid collisions at road and pathway intersections. This year, markings will be placed on the main diagonal path as it crosses Mawson Lakes Bvd to the Shearwater Park. Another will be placed in Shoalhaven where the Dry Creek pathway crosses the existing causeway path. I am aware of concerns about the high density of apartment blocks in Mawson Lakes around the interchange. But please remember that Mawson Lakes has been developed since its inception almost thirty years ago as a master-planned development that is more ‘urban’ than ‘suburban’ in form, with higher densities of development. It takes advantage of its location adjacent to a rail interchange and an established university campus. This is reflected in the scale of buildings, mixed use developments (including provision of cost-effective student accommodation), lower on-site parking requirements and use of on-street parking, all of which are more typical of an urban area. In October a letter in this magazine complained that Council was responsible for the location of the new Aldi store in a current parking area. Until July, all development approval in Mawson Lakes has been under the State Development Assessment Commission (DAC), with exception of some residential approvals delegated to Council. It was the DAC that approved the Aldi development just behind the Boatdeck Cafe. I walked around a number of the businesses that will be affected by the parking lost to Aldi, and found some who welcome the extra customers it will bring. My main concern now is to have Council work on parking for injured and unwell visitors to the Medical, Dental and Specialist businesses. I have also received some feedback about four two storey dwellings at 40-42 Douglas Drive, which are now under construction. These dwellings were also approved by the State DAC, in April 2016. In that instance Council planning staff prepared an assessment report for consideration by DAC as the planning authority, who made the final decision on the application. New Business - Kanga pioneers new way to travel South Australia’s biggest fleet of coaches has moved its operations to Mawson Lakes. Hidden from view in Dan Street, the Kanga depot has undergone major refurbishment in the past few months. Kanga’s chief executive officer, Jules Roeger, said his growing transport business needs wide spaces to park coaches with additional undercover areas, washing enclosures, drivers' rest areas and administration offices, but it does not need a huge frontage or street exposure.
"Our gleaming and modern buses are on the road all over SA, and our immaculate presentation is a unique marketing advantage." Jules said that Mawson Lakes is an ideal location as it’s central to everything with easy access and ample parking. The company employs 45 casual and full-time staff and presently houses 38 coaches.
Sixty percent of its work comes from schools, government rail replacements, movement of people due to cancelled flights, moving defence personnel and international tourists, but times are changing and Kanga is moving into a new luxury market.
"We are seeing a huge reversal in holiday travel. Overseas conflict, terrorism and the spread of viruses has discouraged Australians from travelling overseas. They are now looking to their homeland and exploring places such as the Flinders Ranges, The Riverland, the Barossa and the Coorong, to name a few popular destinations. The Great Ocean Road is a favourite." To service this new wave, Kanga is upgrading its vehicles and introducing luxury lines for extended tours. Presently Jules is working on a custom built 'Signature Series' with many technology innovations such as wifi and road cam, phone charging points, streaming and a multi-media library. And to cater for travellers with disabilities his new coaches have a wheel chair lift. Such custom built prestige coaches can cost as much as $600,000.

In terms of comfort, soft leather seats that are reclinable and moveable accommodate passengers with long legs, and the new coaches have their own bathroom and kitchen. Home Loan Help with Anthony Vancura Cut the credit: Breaking up with debt! As many of us know, it’s all too easy to get into credit card debt. A holiday here, a Christmas shopping binge there, an emergency trip to the mechanic to keep you on the road. Small debts add up to big interest repayments when not repaid swiftly: Here are some basic ideas to help you chip away at that lump sum. Get Motivated In the short term you’ll need real motivation to make the lifestyle changes necessary to pay off your debt. It’s easy to ignore your monthly credit card statements as they build up – but it’s financially damaging in the long run. Use Strategy Not all credit cards are equal – some charge higher interest rates than others and have annual fees. If you have multiple credit card debts, consult with your broker to identify which card to pay down immediately and think about transferring your debt onto a credit card offering lower rates. Other options include negotiating repayment terms with your financial institution, consolidating your debt into a personal loan or incorporating your debt onto your mortgage. Pay Your Cards Off The time is now! Cut up that card, knuckle down and pay off your credit cards! It’s as simple (and difficult) as that. Keep your eyes on the prize: before too long you’ll be debt free and able to use your loan potential and ready cash for property investment, saving or improving your lifestyle as you see fit.

I’m a widow with three children. One lives with me. When I die I want them all to get my house, but ensure the child continues to live in the house. How do I do this?
The best way to ensure your child can continue to live in the property after you die is to give them a Right to Occupy the property in your Will. You can alter the terms of the Right of Occupancy (‘Occupancy’) to suit your particular circumstances.
It is important to outline the conditions of the Occupancy. For example, your child occupying the property must ensure they: • Pay all outgoings; • pay for the property’s upkeep and repair; • insure the property; • reside in the property as their principal place of residence; and • allow the Trustee of your 14

the property can be sold to purchase a substituted residence or be sold to enable your child to live in residential care. When the Occupancy ends you can include a clause in your Will to state that you wish for your three surviving children to receive the property in equal shares.
• The Trustee terminates it because your child has failed to comply with the conditions. • ceases to reside permanently in the property; or • dies. Bad Driver A truck driver pulled into a cafe in the middle of the night for a dinner stop. Just as he was about to eat desert, three wild looking motorcyclists roared up and entered the cafe - bearded, loud, leather-jacketed, filthy. For no reason at all they selected the truck driver as a target. One poured pepper on his head, another stole his apple pie and the third deliberately knocked over his cup of coffee. The truck driver never said a word - he just stood up, paid his bill and left. "That guy sure ain’t no fun, got no fight in him," sneered one of the bikies. The girl behind the counter peered out into the night and added, "He doesn’t seem to be much of a driver either. He just ran his big rig over three motorcycles."

We’re changing our name to
Brain Solutions+
from Dyslexia & Reading Solutions Performance Management Psychologists, Anthony and Maria De Ionno (pictured), work with adults and children providing assessments and interventions to establish improvements in:
"Our interventions are designed to help establish what is restraining or preventing improvements in such areas as learning difficulties, behaviour, sports, work performance and trauma. We work directly with the brain to make fast brain changes and make behaviour change easier. But our old name did not fully reflect this, hence the name change," said Maria. Why Brain Solutions+ We know that as we learn something new, and as we change our behaviour, our brain changes. Brain plasticity research shows this. In our study of hypnotherapy we saw how someone could ignore the effects of having their hand in icy water, write at remarkable speeds and visualise Pac Men leaving only healthy cells active. We have known for a very long time, that the brain changes behaviour. The name Brain Solutions+ incorporates this, plus all the other ways we can help as illustrated in the diagram When should you contact us? If you are concerned that progress at home, work, school, with a tutor, or other professional has "plateaued", talk to us about possible underlying causes and what can be done to deal with them to get you back on track. How will you find us? We are still at 2-4 Hurtle Parade, Mawson Lakes, Phone (08) 7127 4938 under the Dyslexia and Reading Solutions logo for the moment.

Seeing Eye Dogs by Nigella Lots of my friends are therapy dogs working to assist humans so I thought I would end the year with a joke about seeing eye dogs.
to all of my readers A guy walking his chihuahua sees another man enter a cafe in Mawson Lakes with his labrador, and overhears the shop owner say...
"You can't bring that dog in here!" The dog-walker quickly replies... "But this is my seeing-eye dog." "Oh sorry", said the shop owner. "Here, the first drink is on me." The man goes to a table and takes a seat with his dog sitting quietly beside him.
So the guy watching all this figures he could do the same. So he walks into the cafe with his chihuahua and the shop owner says... "Hey, you can't bring
that dog in here!"
The second man replies... "But

is my seeing-eye dog." The cafe owner answers back... "No, I don't think so. They don't use chihuahuas as seeing-eye dogs." The man pauses for just a split second and replies ..... "WHAT?!?! They gave
me a chihuahua?!?"
DVD Review, The Dressmaker If you’re looking for a great Christmas present, buy a copy of the Australian movie "The Dressmaker". Australian through and through, the cast will make you laugh and cry. There’s Judy Davis as the crusty old mother, Liam Hemsworth as the handsome lover, Hugo Weaving as the eccentric policeman and Sarah Snook as the disloyal friend who turns from an ugly duckling into a swan. Hollywood import Kate Winslet masters the Aussie accent perfectly, and dress, by beautiful dress, captivates us from the moment she steps into the frame, looking like an elegant, avenging angel. The storyline is simple but the execution is full of twists. A glamorous, worldly woman returns to her home town in rural Australia in the 1950s with her sewing machine
and her haute couture style, and transforms the country women into stylish models, all the while extracting sweet revenge on those who did her wrong when she was a schoolgirl. It’s not easy to weave light comedy, romantic drama, small-town secrets and revenge-driven motives in one movie, however in The Dressmaker, every piece of the deliciously bizarre puzzle comes together in an unpredictably bitter-sweet ending. Ed You can buy the DVD in store or online and if you’d like to see it yourself, order a copy from the library.
