From the Editor Christmas is catching up and the team at Mawson Lakes Living has started to print festive ideas in this issue. December is a time of big spending, and locals always tell me they like to spend local if they can, so be sure to tell them in our December issue what you can offer gifts, fabulous food, where to celebrate, vouchers for the hard-to-buy, holiday fun, etc. Last month Mawson Lakes put on a wonderful show for the model yacht enthusiasts who spent three days racing their radio controlled boats on the lake. MLL was a sponsor of this national competition so Nigella and I were there talking to the sailors, taking photos and congratulating award winners. See pages 24 and 25.

With 34 competitors and their partners, Mawson Lakes saw an influx of 60 plus visitors who provided a boost to business, as well as a fun spectacle for locals to enjoy over the October long weekend.

Eating Out The eating liftout in MLL/Sept was a great promotion. I discovered places I didn’t know exist and my friends and I (who get together once a week) have been working our way through the eateries in the magazine. All good. - Jenny, Richard, Sabi and Marco Missing portraits Prime Ministerial portraits of Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull are missing from Canberra. Why? Because they change so frequently that the government doesn't have time and enough portrait artists to get the job done. Why not contact Anh Do of ABC’s Brush with Fame. Anh brilliantly knocks out portraits in half an hour! - Michael Pratt Voting The editor urges us to vote in the council elections (MLL/Oct) because voting is not compulsory at local level. At state and federal elections voting is compulsory so why not for local government. Hopefully this would encourage residents to take more interest in the people who govern the neighbourhood in which we live. - Jim Wadsworth

Snakes Snake season (September to March) is here and Mawson Lakes is home to many snakes including the venomous Brown Snake, the Red-bellied Black and the Tiger snake found near the water. Council is reluctant to clear bushland - the natural habitat of snakes - because that encourages snakes to seek shelter in yards and houses. Snakes will not attack you but if they are cornered by a dog, a broom or a garden fork for example, they will fight back, so keep dogs on a lead, stay on the track and keep yards tidy. Call the snake catcher if you want the snake removed from your place, or the council if it is on council land. If bitten seek immediate medical attention. Going places with dogs Nigella’s stories on dog-friendly places are a real help to us. We have been known to travel in her footsteps and people remember the little purple dog and her owner. Our dogs are members of our family and if they can’t go, we don’t go. Interestingly, in the recent Global Travel Survey by Jetstar where they surveyed 30,000 travellers around the world, Australians said the thing they miss most when they travel is their family pet. Australia rated higher on this score than any other country. - Alfreda Jones Continued on page 6

Community Conversations continued from page 5 Going to the dentist I enjoyed reading the story about cat enclosures in MLL/Oct. My sister Ginger and I live in a lovely enclosure in our house. I'd have to say it's the best part of the house but sometimes we have to go out. Like last week when Ginger and I went to the vet to have our teeth cleaned. Both of us saw the cat carriers come out of the cupboard and there was a lightning moment coinciding with our bolting for our secret hiding places. The staff was not pleased and winkled us out. First we had a consultation with the vet who examined our teeth. An appointment was made for us to come back for the cleaning. I was not at all happy with this decision as I clean myself regularly and thoroughly, whereas Ginger is not so fussy. Last year was a dim memory when I had my last checkup. I do remember not having breakfast after the cleaning episode. Food is my passion so I remember every missed meal. I'll be honest and say I have little or no memory of what happened next. I found myself back home with my front leg covered in an orange bandage and that is not a good look. Both Ginger and I had to get the staff to remove this tasteless accessory. We were given a light meal and neither of us had any extractions so I suppose having clean teeth is worth the intrusion.- Purrs from Fred Closures of Service SA offices On two occasions this year I have needed a government service so the first time I went to the Modbury office. It was extremely busy but when my turn came the assistant helped navigate me through a complex process of regulations and forms. The second visit was to Service SA in Prospect and once again the service was impressive. But the state government has announced they will close Service SA offices in Modbury, Prospect and other places. Instead, customers are being told to access services online. The people I observed at Service SA seemed far removed from online competency. Just like me they need personal help to navigate government regulations. They may not be online savvy but they vote, and this is a bad move by the government. - Nakisha Torrens

Best kept secret exposed I’m really happy. An advertisement in 'Where To Eat in Mawson Lakes' in MLL/ September had a fabulous impact on my new business. The place has been full ever since. My cafe is a bit hard to find and lots of new customers said they didnt know we were here in such a nice courtyard in the university grounds and open to the public. - Jacinta, Brightside Deli Dogs and cats management Most dog and cat owners do the right thing but new laws are aimed at irresponsible owners, uncontrolled dogs and straying cats. The new laws enforce a multi-pronged strategy that is partly information gathering and research, partly education, partly prevention and partly big stick. The new Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) management system is a way for pet owners to pay their management fees on the internet. It also gives us much more information about pets in SA. We also have new mandatory desexing and microchipping laws, new powers for councils to investigate dog attacks, and tougher penalties for irresponsible owners. - Dr Felicity Lewis Chair, Dog and Cat Management Board

BEAU BRUG FOR COUNCIL When door-knocking I hear that the cost of Council rates is constantly being raised and the cost of living. I will not support an increase to Council rates above inflation. We need to grow existing businesses, provide adequate parking for residents, businesses and train commuters. I believe that we consider a multi-storey car park at the Mawson Lakes Interchange and duplicate Elder Smith Road. I continue to lobby for a Post Office and sensible development. In line with community feedback, I opposed the ‘$43.82 million-dollar council hub’ for the Salisbury Centre, whilst colleagues described it as important as the New Royal Adelaide Hospital and the Adelaide Oval. It has been a busy year and a half, since my initial election but there is much more to be done. I thank you for your support in the by-election last year and I ask for your number #1 vote to re-elect me to Council to continue to fight for our community. Every Vote Counts. If you wish to raise any council matter, would like to meet me or require a replacement ballot paper please contact me. Please vote #1 Beau Brug for the election, voting is via postal vote and closes 5pm Friday 9th November. Beau Brug – Candidate for Council Election Authorised by Beau Brug, P.O. Box 70, Pooraka 5095

"That must be fun, what tricks can he do?" "He can saw people in half." "Oh that’s clever" replied the teacher, "and do you have any brothers or sisters?" "Oh yes, one half brother and two half sisters!"
Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards
Summer is on its way and it is almost time for our feet to be liberated from enclosed shoes and into some sandals for the warmer weather. In summer our feet are more at risk. They are exposed to the elements, we tend to increase our activity levels putting our feet under more pressure, and footwear is less supportive and offers less foot protection. Here are some tips to help you keep your feet healthy and looking good for the summer. •
Moisturize feet regularly to prevent dry hardened skin especially around heels.
•
Apply sunscreen to tops of feet. They haven’t seen the sun in a while and will tend to burn easily.
•
Wear supportive footwear for exercise.
•
Sandals and thongs tend to be less supportive and can increase foot and leg pain. More supportive styles are available which will improve comfort.
•
Be careful not to burn soles of feet on hot surfaces.
At Mawson Lakes Podiatry clinic we can treat dry, cracked heels, improve nail comfort and appearance, and provide advice on moisturizers and footwear options. Call us on 8262 9999 and make an appointment to get your feet ready for summer.

The oldest profession Three professional men were arguing which one of them belonged to the oldest profession. The doctor said, "Well the Bible says that God took a rib out of Adam to make a woman. Since that clearly required surgery, the oldest profession is surely medicine. The engineer shook his head and replied, "No no, the Bible also says that God created the world out of the void and chaos. To do that God needed an engineer. Therefore engineering is the oldest profession." The lawyer smiled smugly and leaned forward discreetly. "Ah, he said, but who do you think created the chaos?" 14

Clever teeth More goes on in our mouth than we realise. We start with a set of small teeth (the primary or deciduous teeth).
Peter Often before our mouth is Dr even bigBertossa enoughBDS to accommodate them, a second set of supersized adult teeth arrive.
As it is the front adult teeth that present first, often around the age of 6, for many kids it looks like they’ll never fit in. But at the same time the skeleton is growing. Furthermore as baby back teeth are lost, the adult replacements are not bigger than the baby teeth, they are in fact smaller. Combining this and the skeletal growth, initially crowded looking teeth can find room to fit in. The final result comes down to the combined size of the teeth once full skeletal growth potential is met. www.

Beautiful Garden Award: Cushions add style A well placed cushion can add a touch of class and personality to a garden. Just look at Roslyn's garden in Jacaranda Grove (below) where a cheeky toucan cushion sits casually on a dainty wrought iron chair. The cushion draws the eye to a spot where the creativity of the owner is obvious. It's a small front yard that is well-presented all year round. Decoration is minimal, but refined, such as one tall urn featuring a small bouquet of snapdragon
plants. The cushion changes with the seasons. At Christmas time Roslyn puts out a festive cushion. Look out for it. Outdoor cushions are a fabulous way to jazz up a front yard. The little splashes of artwork need not be expensive, but once they start to fade, it's time to go shopping for new ones. Try the op shops for inexpensive cushions.
Even old weathered chairs can come to life with fresh cushions. These cushions cost $3 each at the op shop.
Pairing a cushion with the colours in the garden adds striking coordination to this front porch.

Whether hung on the house or wrapped around garden trees, these lights bring a warm feeling into any home and lots of cheer to the neighbourhood. Here are a few tips: 1. Find inspiration: Find lots of ideas on the internet. Walk the streets and take photos of decorated houses and adapt the designs to your house. Make a plan so you’ll have the correct number of lights. 2. Get in early: Buy early before the lights run out. Test old and new lights on the ground before you hang them. Throw out old lights that no longer work. After Christmas look at the selling sites on the internet and buy up cheap for next year. 3. Be safe: Call in an electrician to install outdoor power points, check the wiring on the lights, avoid overloading, set timers, and find out how you can run your lights at the most efficient cost. Waterproof outdoor lights to avoid blown fuses. Ask the electrician how to do all this. (see ad to the left.)

The fairest sailor of all by Nigella Sitting in my chair high up on the green hill in Technology Park I looked out across Sir Douglas Mawson Lake and watched the pretty model yachts racing up and down the water, each trying to catch the capricious wind that would move their little boat forward faster than their competitors. Mummy and I often walk around this quiet lake, but on the October long weekend the place was buzzing with people clapping the fast-moving sailing boats. The cheerful crowd had come from interstate and overseas to compete in the Radio Controlled Laser National Titles at Mawson Lakes, hosted by the Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club. The Fairest Sailor, Peter Lee, with his wife Janet and Nigella
At the end of three days mummy awarded the prize to the Best and Fairest which was sponsored by Mawson Lakes Living. The winner was a sailor from Melbourne, who was originally from South Africa where he used to sail big boats in big seas. Now his joy is to sail radio controlled model laser yachts, train sailors and help others when things go wrong. Here are pictures of the event and some comments we gathered.
"Lasers are a good-natured class of sailors and this event has excellent vibes. I hope we can get this crowd to come sailing in Christchurch next year." - Graham Watson New Zealand

2018 RC Laser Championships on Sir Douglas Mawson Lake
"This well run event has put Mawson Lakes on a national footing in the sailing world." - Dean Bonnett,
Mawson Lakes welcomed laser model yacht sailors with beautiful weather, plenty of breeze for sailing, stiff competition for the laser titles and a current of warm hospitality over three days. This was reflected in the comments made by sailors.
president Mawson Lakes Model Yacht Club
Thank you to Gerry Giebel who took these photographs. He described the location and the event as "a sailor’s paradise".
The winner was Scott Fleming from NSW, but NSW didn’t get to claim the 2018 State Trophy. This went to South Australia.
"I love lasers but I love the people who sail them even more." - Graham Brown NSW
"Mawson Lakes is a lovely place and the event was exceptionally well organised" - guys from Paradise Lakes, Gold Coast Queensland
