Beautiful trees in a top city Glorious jacaranda trees flower in my street, and throughout Adelaide in November. Their beauty is not only in the trees but in the purple carpet they make as the flowers fall. Don't sweep them up too soon. At this time of year I like to park my car under a jacaranda tree so when I hop into it I'm greeted by mauve flowers sprinked on the bonnet and windscreen, then as I drive off the trumpet flowers blow away. Makes my day! Jacaranda beauty reminds me why Adelaide is ranked the fifth best city in the world to live in, according to the Economist Liveability Index for 2016. Go to page 20 to see why. MLL is a great traveller and this month we have photos of it in Rome, Vienna and St Petersburg.
Readers tell me they love to see MLL around the world and some say they turn to this page first each month. I reckon this helps make MLL the schmickest little community magazine in SA. Tell us what you think, we thrive on feedback. And keep sending your pics and comments. Our Christmas issue is underway and we are preparing a Christmas Shopping Guide to encourage our readers to shop locally. If you'd like to be in this festive issue let me know asap, or if you would like to send a Christmas greeting to your customers the magazine is a perfect way to do it so that your message reaches into every corner of Mawson Lakes. Bookings close at the beginning of this month so it's time to start mobilising for Christmas.

Community Conversations
have your say...
Comfortable connections Mawson Lakes Living is such a comfortable little magazine that I'm taking copies home to the Head Office to show them an example of an excellent community magazine. - Dianne Dalziel, Sales and Marketing, Lendlease, Melbourne Plebiscite - No vote I’m in favour of a plebiscite so the plebs can have their say. My view is that we should be able to love who we like… but marriage is a legal contract. It's not about love. It is designed to manage resources within a family and assign responsibility for children between a man (husband) and a woman (wife). In the legal system love doesn’t come into it. Equally, divorce is about dividing resources and kids. Love doesn’t come into it. I am not in favour of introducing complexity and confusion into the legal process of marraige to legitimise same-sex love. Find another way to show commitment. Ed Holmes Plebiscite - Yes vote More marriages = more divorces = more work for lawyers. Bring it on. - Gavin, law student Going backwards C’mon Linda, cut the crap by persistently telling us how wonderful it is to live in Mawson Lakes. Since Salisbury Council took over the running of Mawson Lakes (from Delphin/Lendlease) the suburb has been going backwards. Real estate figures show that $36,000 has dropped off the price tag at Mawson Lakes in the last year. Data indicates the median sale price of units fell from $323,500 in 2015 to $287,500 in 2016. The median asking price for rent has dropped from $330 to $325 this year. Supply outweighs demand, open space between buildings is diminishing and Council agreements with pack’em'in developers has brought us to this point. According to police reports, criminal activity in ML is up. Retail businesses struggle to survive as can be seen by the large number of empty shop fronts and office vacancies. Instead of going ahead as a quality suburb in the North - a good place to invest - Mawson Lakes is going backwards. - D Margretula 4
Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 113 - November 2016
Shopping confusion Shopping in Mawson Lakes is confused and uninviting. Shops are diverse and scattered throughout the suburb with no map or registry anywhere as to the locations. Parking is inadequate and now we are alerted to the fact that ALDI is to take up at least 40 % of the available parking out the front of TARGET. Where will shoppers and people wanting a coffee be able to park? Do we really need an ALDI here in Mawson Lakes? My view is NO. There is one 4-5 kms down the road at Parafield Gardens. That’s close enough. - Phill (The Cascades) Heritage destruction "The Levels" historic homestead will soon pass from public land into private hands. I fear for its fate under the proposed heritage reform whereby local councils will be excluded from the local heritage process. No longer will councils and communities have a say. How sad that this iconic building in the North built in 1874 when Mawson Lakes was pastoral country will be lost from the community forever. Under the new heritage law we will see the State Government swing a wrecking ball through local heritage structures to make money from developers. Once gone we will never get it back. Take a look for yourself at 67 Douglas Drive The Cove, in Technology Park - Keith Kelton Ho,ho, ho, it's off to WALK we go Last month MLL took several photos of the Mawson Lakes Walkers and published one with a story on page 24. We submitted these photos to the 2017 Calendar Competition run by the National Heart Foundation. Out of 87 entries from across Australia we won a place! - Christine Hillier Bad signage I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this ill-informed poster advising people to feed native birds grapes, nuts and seeds. This is dangerous food for birds and can kill them. - Glenn Baden
Sign outside a church "Do unto others as if you were the other." Target troubles I was interested to read Cheryl Verni’s experience at Target (MLL/Aug) where every item she wanted to buy in the Mawson Lakes store was out of stock. Target is struggling financially with a sharp fall in earnings. Parent company Wesfarmers (owners of Coles, Bunnings, Officeworks, Kmart and Target) reported an 83.3 per cent drop in profits last financial year. As a result the company has stated it is planning to reduce its product range by up to 15 per cent over the next 3 years to strip costs out of its supply line. It’s a vicious circle - no profit - no products - no products - no sales - no sales - no profit. - Ahmed Jallie
Guide for homemakers We have just moved into Mawson Lakes from interstate and have a new home to furnish. Your homemaker liftout (MLL/October) was just what we needed. - Shirl Anderson, Cascades Roadside memorials Councils are considering the positioning of roadside tributes. I support a ban on these distractions on the road. Grief is a personal thing but there is no need to continually share it on lamp posts with the rest of the community. Cemeteries are for tributes and memorials, not the roadside. - Ryan Vegt

Voice of the People: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TREE?
"I love the smell of the frangipani. It brings back wonderful memories of my wedding day where frangipanis were on the cake and in my bouquet." - Maria Cowie
"The jacaranda is my favourite tree. I used to live in Johannesburg where the streets were lined with jacarandas. I always adore the colour." - Carol Carroll
"We have a fouryear-old lemon tree in our backyard and everybody is very excited that it’s just started to produce fruit." - William Lastra
"There was a peppercorn tree in my yard when I was young. I liked the peppery smell and the berries provided ammunition when we were playing!" - Shirley Rosenthal

New Business - Urban Creative Landscapes When Brett Horwood hops on his bicycle and rides around Mawson Lakes his eye is drawn to beautiful gardens and the green spaces between units and apartment blocks. He has a professional appreciation for the way that the wandering waterways, winding tracks and pockets of well-cared for gardens link and soften the built environment. That’s because Brett is a landscape designer. He has been in the landscaping business for 23 years and has worked in parklands and vineyards, on ovals and soccer pitches, and he is particularly interested in home garden design and streetscaping. Growing up in a big family in Port Pirie, Brett was always playing outdoors, fishing and crabbing and planting things in the backyard, so it’s understandable that he loves nature and the outdoors. He’s been a city boy for a long time and just recently moved his office and residence to Mawson Lakes. "I only have a small yard but it’s enough to grow my own herbs and vegetables which I use in cooking," he said. Brett believes that many people give up on gardening because they only have a small space, but he argues that with the right plants and the addition of hedges and rendered walls, correct irrigation and a water feature, a small space can be turned into a paradise. "I like to create tranquil spaces where people can sit and relax. If a house is small, an attractive yard

can extend the liveable space. In a garden we can do so much with so little." "Nice landscaping creates a sense of peace and a feeling of security. When things are ordered and appealing people tend to care more about their surroundings. Now that I’m part of the Mawson Lakes community I want to help make Mawson Lakes even more beautiful." Ed

Mirror by mirror a business grows Glamorous mirrors tell the story of Longko Salon, an expanding business in Mawson Lakes. Business owner Marcela Lastra said she started her home hairdressing business in a converted garage in Mawson Lakes eight years ago when baby No 1 was on the way. "I’d worked in high-end salons in the city but I wanted to be with my baby so I started with just a few clients. I had one mirror, one chair and one basin. Over 4 years my little salon grew into 2 mirrors, 2 chairs, 2 basins and an assistant. "Things got very busy at my house with clients coming and going, and the family (2 children by now) wanted to reclaim their space and be able to play around in their pyjamas and make a lot of noise, so I took the big step of moving into a shop in Mawson Lakes. Immediately this attracted new clientele and walk-by-traffic and the salon went from 2 mirrors to 4, and before long we had 6." Then in September Marcela took an even bigger step. She rebranded her business from 'Hair by Marcela' to 'Longko Salon’ to reflect her growing international reputation and she outfitted an even larger salon in Hurtle Parade with 10 mirrors and two additional hairdressers. "My original mirrors have pride of place on the wall alongside the new ones," she laughed. Marcela cites 6 keys to her business success: 1. 2.
3.
Drive and tenacity. I work hard and often put in an 18 hour day. Supportive people. Without the wonderful teamwork of my husband and our parents I couldn’t do it all. I carefully select the people who work for me and invest in their training. Networking in the industry. Business went to an international level when I got involved

I respect my clients and that includes opening on time, anwering the phone promptly, being dependable and going the extra mile. We open at night too for working clients. Invest in marketing. You need to spend money to make money. We use social media, word-of-mouth and local advertising (MLL). Value your time. It's vital to decide the best use of your time. If you are a mother, employ people to support you with housekeeping and business management. Delegate so that you have time to expand your business and also give attention to the things that are important to you, such as family.
"My overall strategy is to keep abreast of all operations in my business without being the master of all. I regard myself as the motor that runs the machine." Ed

New words to flavour our language Australian National Dictionary is constantly updating its words and phrases. Here are a few new ones added this year. Bogans, tradies and checkout chicks have made it to the list, along with rangas (redheads). A popular word for food that has entered the language is "babychino" (coffee foam for the kids). Nigella likes a "doggychino" when we sit at a cafe but this has not scored an entry. Maybe next year. A fashionable young man living in a country area is a "rurosexual" and a "chardonnay socialist" is someone who espouses left-wing views but enjoys an affluent lifestyle. Australian movies have added their own flavour to our language such as "straight to the pool room" from the classic movie The Castle. This defines a special object worth keeping in a place for treasured items.
Indigenous idioms include "secret womens’ business"; manga (a tourist); "Welcome To Country"; and "Invasion Day". Other catchy phrases to be immortalised are: "your blood’s worth bottling", "carry on like a pork chop", "couldn’t run a chook raffle" and "dry as a dead dingo’s donger" (penis). Australian politics throws up lots of colourful phrases such as "keeping the bastards honest", and the enduring phrase "Howard’s Battlers" and "Hawkespeak" (a too wordy speech). Thanks to Julia Gillard for the infamous "Captain’s Pick" (decision made by party leader), and applause to Tony Abbott for turning budgie smugglers into a household phrase alongside his threat to "shirt front" Mr Putin. The editor of the Australian National Dictionary describes the dictionary as "the schmickest dictionary of all, reflecting our collective identity, history and values." Now there’s a nice word to play with - schmickest (smart, stylish). I’ve used it in this issue of MLL. Can you find it? Ed

Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards
Summer Feet Well Summer is on its way and it is time for your feet to be liberated from those boots and enclosed shoes and into some sandals for the warmer weather. In Summer our feet are more exposed to the elements and we also tend to increase our activity levels putting our feet under more pressure. Here are some tips to help you keep your feet healthy and looking good for the summer. • Moisturize feet regularly to prevent dry hardened skin especially around heels. • Apply sunscreen to tops of feet. They haven’t seen the sun in a while and will tend to burn easily. • Wear supportive footwear for exercise • Sandals and thongs tend to be less supportive and can increase foot and leg pain. More supportive styles are available which will improve comfort. • Be careful not to burn soles of feet on hot surfaces. • Don’t leave nail polish on permanently as it may increase your risk of fungal nail infections. At Mawson Lakes Podiatry clinic we can treat dry, cracked heels, improve nail comfort and appearance, and provide advice on moisturizer use and footwear options. Call us on 8262 9999 and make an appointment to get your feet ready for Summer.

Meet Adrian Maik, one of our team of lawyers who has special experience with Court procedures.
I have been ordered to pay money, by a Court order, against a debt in my name. I did not know about the matter, i.e. that I was being sued for payment of a debt.
There can be many reasons why people have a Court order (judgment) recorded against them for payment of a debt. Sometimes people take issue with the nature of the debt they have incurred (for example, where the debt relates to work done or services rendered), thinking they have been overcharged or the work / services rendered was unsatisfactory. On other occasions they simply cannot afford to pay. There are even times when people have a Court judgment recorded against them without even being aware of the Court action. A simple check with a credit reporting authority can reveal whether any such
judgments exist.
an Investigation Summons – being brought to Court to discuss what ability you have to pay the debt and ability to enter into a payment plan. It may also include a charge over your home, or an order for the sale of goods. While it is rare, a wilful failure to comply with Court ordered payment arrangements can result in imprisonment.
If the debt, which is the subject of the judgment, is in dispute, you may be able to have the judgment set aside and the matter brought back to Court for determination (reassessment). You will need to show that you have an arguable defence and that there was a valid reason for not responding to the earlier Court action. For example, that you were not aware Port Adelaide: 8447 4466 that you were being sued for the debt). Adelaide: 8212 6875 If the first judgment is not set aside, you should consider what options may be taken to recover the judgment sum. This may include

Best place to live Here in Mawson Lakes we live in one of the top cities in the world according to the Economist Liveability Index for 2016. The index looks at 140 cities and rates them according to stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infra-structure. This year Adelaide was ranked as the fifth most liveable city in the world. The only cities ahead of us were Melbourne, Vienna, Vancouver and Toronto. Victoria’s capital city scored perfect points for healthcare, education and infrastructure which earned it the international top rank. Sydney lost its place in the top 10 on the grounds of security because of a perceived threat of terrorism. Perth came in 7th place. Adelaide may not seem perfect as you sit in the traffic or feel the effects of flooding, but few cities of its size can boast such a glorious climate, political stability, relative safety, impressive buildings (think St Peter’s Cathedral) and its range of world class facilities (think Adelaide Oval). Not to mention all the attractions and festivals we enjoy plus three

Dogmanship by Nigella We dogs hear a lot about how to be a good dog, but at the University of Sydney there's a study going on to see how humans can be good owners. It’s all part of a new science called Dogmanship and it explains how a good owner can get a dog to do anything if they just know how to listen to their dog.
A psychology professor analysed hundreds of videos of dogs being cuddled and found that 81.6 per cent of cases, the canine was exhibiting signs of unhappiness.
ABC television picked up the story and ran two episodes on Catalyst on how to make dogs happy and how to tell when they are showing signs of stress or unhappiness. Mummy was glued to the screen. You can see it on iView.
Dog owners who enjoy the most success are good at reading our moods. They consider our feedback and adjust their behaviour accordingly.
Did you know, for instance, that most dogs don’t like hugs. I don’t, and I don’t like being picked up either. I like stroking and sweet talk but I don’t like strangers and other dogs getting too personal!
How can you tell if a dog is unhappy? The professor said indicators include a dog lowering its ears, stress yarning, licking the air and turning its head away. Other signs include rolling on its back, shaking its body or scratching itself for no apparent reason. In my case, it's dropping my tail.
To demonstrate good dogmanship and how to achieve it Catalyst took a big dog (labrador) a medium-sized dog (spoodle) and a little dog (chihuahua) and trained their owners in dogmanship. Can you guess which breed was the fastest to pick up the cues and respond to good dogmanship?

Movie Review The Secret Life of Pets
Awful Movie!! Parents Beware!! I took my little friend Nancy (6) to the movies as a special treat to see a movie I thought was about the innocent hijinks of pets while their owners were at work (at least that’s what the trailer showed). Instead it was a sadistic horror movie masquerading as a cartoon for 6+. After the first few minutes of cute sweetness the charm evporated and the movie developed into a sinister plot about an underground gang of thug animals in the sewer system in New York. A violent mix of unrelenting physical batterings, explosions, fire, abuse, kidnapping, killing and torture gave us the action. Then there were the sociopathic characters manipulating the audience through fear with one perilous graphic after another - car crashes, a killer eagle, falls from extreme heights and horrible scenes of drowning of the innocent, cute pets we saw in the intro. Scary crocodiles, viper snakes and a whole contingent of dumped animals who laughed about killing humans because they were angry about being abandoned made up the rest of the cast. The words "murder" and "kill" were used frequently. We live in a troubled world where many children suffer from fear as the victims of war and abuse.
Some parents may have identified political undertones of warfare and vengeance but a child’s movie is no place to scare kids and peddle society's dark undercurrents. Children absorb a great deal about life from the screen. Are these the values and behaviours we want to teach them - vengeance, bullying, gang violence, torture, lying and kidnapping. In the session I attended, parents were walking their kids out of the movie. One woman who took her youngsters and grandma made a hasty retreat and demanded a refund (which she got). This is the worst kids' cartoon movie I have seen with zero redeeming value and just a horrible evil storyline. Don’t go, and beware, don’t buy the DVD as a present for Christmas, or bring it home for family entertainment. - Dr Linda Vining is a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators.
