Liftoff to Space Drive along Park Way in Technology Park and look in awe at the big white satellite dishes that collect data from satellites 36,000 km away. Take your children because this is the frontier of knowledge. Your future holiday may be a trip to Mars! Now that the federal government has announced the birth of an Australian space agency, South Australia is well-placed to become the "Space State". Our isolated uninhabited deserts, our clear skies, good weather, intellectual capital and government support is just what space development needs.

Space exploration is a hot topic, so this month I went inside the space station at Mawson Lakes and interviewed the operations director to bring you a feature story and a cover photograph.

Here in Mawson Lakes we have already entered the space economy and are pushing ahead in space technology and space education. Better check your space knowledge? Test it out in Mind Massage on page 11. In line with space exploration, the educational focus for young people is on STEM subjects - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In Mawson Lakes we are well into it. Read our story on the popular robotics program in the library, and Preet's wonderful experience at the recent space conference in Adelaide (page 9). From Space back to Earth . . . celebrity chef Callum Hann visited Mawson Lakes recently and Mawson Lakes Living was there to taste his innovative dishes, pick up a few tips for the kitchen and bring you a new recipe.

Space Station in Mawson Lakes You’re on a cruise ship at sea using your smartphone, or maybe you’re in a remote mining campsite using your laptop. There are no cables connecting you to the internet so how do you send and receive your messages? It's likely they come from the Mawson Lakes Earth Station in Technology Park, from those huge satellite dishes on Park Way shown on the cover. This Mawson Lakes earth station, owned and operated by Speedcast Australia, has 15 antenna (white dishes) that talk to different satellites circling the equator, 36,000 km away. The huge antennas pick up the messages from the satellites and re-transmit them to Mawson Lakes, which in turn sends them back to your cruise ship or remote location or wherever. Some of the satellites in the expanding Mawson Lakes multi-million-dollar teleport are exclusively for defence purposes and others are for commercial use such as Voice over IP (used for calls to landline phones), web browsing or measuring seismic activity in the Pacific Ocean. Operations Director Eugenio Carvajal said that the Mawson Lakes Teleport is a perfect place to have an earth station - the weather is good, the land is flat and SA is in a central position on the continent.

"South Australia is well-placed to be a leader in the space economy if it acts now to utilise its attributes. It could become the "Space State", said the electronics engineer who has worked in satellite technology for more than 18 years.

"In Mawson Lakes our focus is on communication technology in the Australia-Pacific region, but satellite technology is being used in agriculture, artificial intelligence, navigation, driverless cars, space tourism. . . to name just a few applications." Eugenio says the space economy is the new frontier. "We only see as far as the planet we live on, but there is so much more to know that will change the way we see the universe." "It’s early days, but dreaming drives discovery and this starts with investigation of the unknown." Ed Director of operations Eugenio Carvajal at the Mawson Lakes space station in Technology Park. Vote for Fund My Neighbourhood projects In August MLL reported on the SA government's initiative to provide $40 million for community projects under the Fund My Neighbourhood program. The response from Mawson Lakes was strong and nominations have closed. Now you can choose 3 to 5 projects you want to see funded by voting online (the only option). To vote you must register with an email address at the following website: www. fundmyneighbourhood.yoursay.sa.gov.au Voting is open now but don’t delay because it closes mid November. Beware of snakes When you are out walking beware of snakes in Mawson Lakes. Stick to wide, clear pathways. Snake Catchers predict an explosion of snakes this summer because of the mice plague we’ve had, which means that snakes have fed well so conditions are good for breeding in spring. Snakes like our waterways and make their homes in the rocks along the Dry Creek. They can be in overgrown yards and sometimes come into houses. Be particularly aware if you are walking a dog that likes to sniff things out from bushes and rocks. Do not try to catch/kill a snake yourself. Move away and call the council on 8406 8222. Joshua Closee Internship with MLL Thank you for being so open to the idea of offering me an internship with MLL to assist me in finishing my uni degree. I am currently in the last leg of a Bachelor of Journalism/ Arts (Communication and Creative Writing) at UniSA Magill, and all that is required for me to graduate next year is to complete an internship in a real-life professional project. Encumbrances People who bought into Mawson Lakes when Delphin/Lendlease were managing the site signed encumbrances which spelled out a property owner’s obligations. What has happened to encumbrances? Debra Cane Poo bags I read a note from Dan, on page 4 of the October edition of MLL confessing to not picking up after his dog. Cleaning up after a dog is every dog owner's duty, no matter whether the councilsupplied bags are available or not. It's a good practice to leave home for a walk with a bag in one's hand and pick up a council supplied bag on the way home, to be ready for the next walk. Owner responsibility for dogs defecating in public has been regulated in the South Australia Dog and Cat Management Act 1995. - Andrew Munk Council reply to dog poo bags In relation to issues raised in MLL about poo bags please note that the penalty for not picking up after your dog is $210. Residents should carry their own bags, and are encouraged to contact Council if one of the Council dispensers has run out of bags prior to its scheduled refill, so that staff can attend. If you know of a highly used area you can recommend to Council that a dispenser be installed. Repair or replace The Council administration building at Salisbury needs repair work. Cost is estimated at $1million. Instead, council has opted to build

Walking economy Two friends are walking down the street. One man says to the other, "I’m a walking economy." His friend replies, "How’s that?" a brand new civic centre, estimated cost $44 million (Mayor’s report MLL/Oct). Is this where our rates are going? Rory Denver Have a say Page Pegus is hostile about a council rate increase of 3% (MLL/Aug). I am hostile about how our rates are being spent. Council is building a community hub at a cost of $43 million to relocate the present council building and combine it with the library and a recreation centre. The mayor says "it will rejuvenate the district and attract private sector development." (MLL/Oct). What a waste of money when basic services are falling apart in Adelaide’s most depressed region. How about using the money to attract more business to Mawson Lakes, build a proper parking station at the interchange, and fix access problems to link the residential estates with the commercial? At the council meeting Beau Brug voted again the Community Hub, Steve White voted in favour. Contact your council representatives to let them know what you think. - August Jones New business in Mawson Lakes QinetiQ Australia has opened a new office in Endeavour House in Mawson Lakes, Qinetiq is an industry support partner for aerospace, land and maritime services. Correction On page 8 of MLL/October I reported that defence technology leader Lockheed Martin was selling its office on Third Ave, Technology Park. This is incorrect. While the building is for sale, Lockheed Martin will continue to be a tenant in the property and is in fact growing its presence and capabilities in Mawson Lakes on the back of a number of significant contract successes. I apologise to Lockheed Martin for any distress caused by the inaccuracies in my report - Steve White

Youth Report

by Preet International Astronautical Congress 2017

Spot the 10 differences

Students from Mawson Lakes School were lucky enough to go to the International Astronautical Congress last month. With the help of our teacher Vira Wallis, we constructed a presentation on sending a phone into space to help map Earth’s magnetic fields and how students could be involved. After a month of preparing, we hopped on a bus to the Adelaide Convention Centre which was buzzing with people in professional suits, TV reporters, model rockets, many stalls, 3d printers and even virtual reality. We were given 10 minutes to "advertise" our project and persuade people to vote for us. If we got enough votes, we would be able to carry out the project. After our presentation, we had a look at the other presentations and stalls.

Send the rocket home

It was wonderful seeing space agencies from all around the world. There was India, France, Italy, Korea, China, Japan, the UAE, Australia and so many more. Delegates had come from their own counties to promote their mission or project. We had lots of fun meeting the people from all the different countries. We chatted with some people from Korea about K-pop (Korean pop music). We also talked to the people from Japan and tested our Japanese skills. On top of that, we learned a lot from the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) about satellites and rockets, reusable rockets and space rubble. It was a wonderful day. I learned so much.

Robotics program at Mawson Lakes Curious kids are coming together to participate in the highly loved Robotics Program in the Mawson Lakes library where kids are taught robotics using Lego pieces and coding. The 75-minute program is an initiative by the City of Salisbury. Every week the students learn a new element of programming - how to make a robot move, or the functions of various motors and sensors. The session is followed by a challenge that tests their learning. For example, if they learn how to use the wheels, the challenge would be to get them to make their robots move in a particular way. Andrew Murray, Community Development Coordinator said the program aims to get kids interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) topics.

"Coding and an understanding of the engineering behind robotics is an important part of that. The program has become extremely successful."

The Robotics program in Mawson Lakes Library (pictured above) is open for kids from age 10. The emphasis on STEM learning has also dictated other initiatives like National Science Week and Adult Learners’ Week where robotics is taught to adults as well. The team at the Library is looking to expand their program next year by incorporating advanced classes for kids who are keen to look beyond basic programming. Gayatri Nair

Celebrity cook at Trinity Green When celebrity cook Callum Hann gave a cooking demonstration at Trinity Gardens Retirement Village he said that food is so much more than fuel for our bodies.

Callum's visit is just one of many organised activities at Trinity Green. Kay says residents enjoy a variety of visiting speakers and there’s lots to do and new things to learn, so there's never a dull day.

"There’s a lot of emotion attached to food. It’s is a powerful way of bringing people together, whether to celebrate events, make new friends or cross cultural borders."

"At the village we all live independent lives in our own houses and we attend activities as we please. Every morning at 10.30 a delicious morning tea is served followed by a choice of indoor games, aquaerobics in the pool, book club and computers in the library, bingo and more. "We have special nights where we bring out the BBQ, or a celebration event where we have party food.

Callum who won Masterchef in 2012 and went on to establish his own cooking school SPROUT treated his audience to tasty samples from his demonstration and disclosed lots of cooking tips, such as how to squeeze an orange in a clever way and why olive oil should not sit for too long in your cupboard.

"Callum is certainly right when he says that food brings people together," said Kay.

Resident Kay Scarlett said his talk was an inspiration to use local, fresh, seasonal produce. "I took away lots of hints such as ways to use different herbs, when to add spices to cooking and how to crack eggs in a better way." "Young cooks are adventurous and they bring fresh ideas to the kitchen, such as roasting rhubarb and strawberries together to make a dessert. Who would think of that?"

Neighbourhood Watch in Mawson Lakes In Mawson Lakes we are seeing an increase in break-ins, hoon behaviour and drug trafficking. As a community we can band together to keep the neighbourhood safer by forming a Neighbourhood Watch Group. Neighbourhood Watch is a well established, Australia-wide scheme between a community and the police to help protect a suburb from crime, break-ins and vandalism. Mawson Lakes was originally planned with passive surveillance in mind so our houses surround green spaces and residents can see what is happening in their local streets and parks. As a member of NHW, if a resident sees suspicious behaviour they have been trained how to respond and who to call. To organise Neighbourhood Watch in Mawson Lakes we want to form a community group that meets regularly to discuss issues to do with safe and secure living. Members will gain knowledge, guidelines and resources to be effective. Ed

Muscle building for girls A susceptible shift is taking place in the world of bodybuilding; women are no longer afraid to embrace a more muscular frame. One of the many leading the change in Mawson Lakes is Kimberly Jackson. The 26-year-old, for the last two years, has been working towards getting a more muscular body and has also successfully competed in bodybuilding competitions.

to remember that at the end of the day, it is about taking care of one’s body. Also, a woman, with a muscular body, can still look beautiful and feminine," says Kimberly. Gayatri Nair

"Initially, gym was confusing as I was not aware of the functions of various equipment. Soon I joined the Fit Groups that come together in Mawson Lakes and met Suzy, one of the trainers at Plus Fitness. She encouraged me to take to bodybuilding, and working out. That’s how it all began," says Kimberly. Kimberly’s typical workout week comprises a customised routine targeting various parts of her body. "My routine helps me focus on my glutes, hamstrings, arms, shoulders, back, among others, on different days. I get my cardio from regular netball practice," she says. The pint-sized bodybuilder is aware of the negative perceptions harboured by many against muscular women. "It doesn’t faze me. I am happy doing what I do. I feel many women would opt for gym and muscle building but they may feel overwhelmed, with so many types of equipment and not knowing what to do. I would encourage them to go in for a couple sessions with a physical trainer and understand what muscle building is all about. It is important

Work will soon begin on improvements to pedestrian and cycle access for Mawson Lakes. The City of Salisbury and the State Government are spending $2.4m to improve the pedestrian path and cycling path on the Elder Smith Drive Bridge and enhance the Augustine Street link between the Northern and Southern sides of the bridge. As a local resident, I welcome this investment but I also know that the issues of traffic management in Mawson Lakes require more work. I know that getting between different parts of our suburb can be difficult, particularly for those who are on foot or use mobility scooters. Different solutions have been suggested at different times but I believe a comprehensive view of traffic and access across Mawson Lakes needs to be done with real community input. That’s why I have asked the Minister for Transport to create a Road Management Plan for Elder Smith Drive. A plan that is not just prepared by experts, but that takes into account the real experiences and knowledge of those of us who use these roads every day. I will keep the local community informed on progress, but in the meantime, if you have a comment to make, feel free to contact me.

A Pain in the Thumb! Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition affecting over 2 million Australians. It affects joints, causing cartilage (the protective coating on bones in a joint) to wear out and become thin. Many joints can be affected by OA. One of the most commonly impacted is at the base of the thumb (known as the first metacarpal joint.) Symptoms of base of thumb OA include pain, swelling, stiffness and difficulty pinching or gripping. This can make everyday tasks such as turning keys, opening jars or using tools challenging. Hand Therapists are well equipped to help you manage base of thumb OA. This can help you to do the things you enjoy, while reducing pain levels. Following an assessment, a Hand Therapist will provide you with a personalised treatment plan. This may involve providing the right splint for your needs, for support or compression. It could include exercises to improve range of movement, increase strength and reduce stiffness, or suggesting modifications to the way you carry out certain activities.

Ingrown toenails Ingrown toe nails is a condition where the edge of the nail grows into the flesh causing discomfort. It is most common on the big toe nail but can affect any nail. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort and redness to pain, and even infection. The pain can make it hard to wear enclosed shoes and uncomfortable to exercise. What causes them? There are several possible contributing factors including: • poor cutting technique or nail picking • shoes which are too tight, pointed, short or shallow in the toe area • hereditary factors such as curved nail shape and toe shape

How are they treated? To treat ingrown nails it is necessary to identify causes and review aspects such as cutting technique and footwear. Conservative treatment such as clearing the nail edge and education to prevent recurrence may be sufficient. In the case of severe nail problems or recurrent issues, minor surgical correction to narrow the nail is an effective permanent treatment alternative. In most cases it is only necessary to remove a small portion of nail giving a good cosmetic result. If you have painful ingrown nails and need further information regarding management call 8262 9999 for an appointment.

Underground

with Nigella While all eyes were looking into space last month I was living underground!

Home was a dugout in the opal mining town of Coober Pedy, far away in the desert, where it gets so hot in summer that people and dogs live in underground dugouts to keep cool. We were staying at Venus Hill where opal miner Mike had carved deep into the side of the hill to build a home. To get inside, we walked down a steep tunnel carved out of rock, (see picture) and at the end was a modern lounge room, kitchen, etc. It was very dark when the lights went out and deadly quiet, not like Mawson Lakes where I hear noises all through the night. The best part was Katie. She’s Mike's dog and as

soon as our car pulled up she ran over to greet me. Katie said it's lonely living on a mining site, so having another dog visit is good fun. "Hi Nigella." she said, "Come and I’ll show you around my place". She took me all over the site and we explored big mining machinery, millions of dusty tools and rusting heaps of dead equipment. There was a small desert garden covered in Katie's old bones and lots of rocks to scramble over. Some places were out of bounds but Katie knew all the rules. "No Nigella, we’re not allowed to go there," she said as I ventured into forbidden corners. "Follow me," and instead she led me over sandy, stoney desert paths. I’m a pampered city girl and she’s a dusty desert dog but we hit it off straight away. Later on we saw churches built underground, opal mines, shops and even a fancy underground hotel. What a way-out place. I thought I was on another planet!
