COUNT THE STRAWBERRIES
Spring Zing Gardens are looking gorgeous in spring and MLL is out presenting garden awards. See page 12. Did you know we have a community garden in Mawson Lakes, open to all to pick free strawberries and a variety of vegetables. Read about it in our garden feature where we show you the rainbow salad we made using fresh produce from the community garden. The closest beach to Mawson Lakes is Semaphore and a survey shows that a large number of visitors there are from Mawson Lakes. But bad things are happening at Semaphore that threaten the beach and surrounding environment. The government is relocating sand from Semaphore/Largs (300,000 cubic metres) to West Beach where the coastline is eroding into the sea.
Hidden throughout the pages of this issue are cute strawberry characters like this one. Count them (including this one) then check page 19 to see if you found them all.
ecosystem amid the grasses and scrubs holds the sand in place. Much of this dune system along the coast has already been destroyed by development so the residual dunes are increasingly important as sea level rises. We destroy them at our peril. A resident action group has formed to fight sand-carting and if you would like to support the group call Jill on 0421 831 157.

Interchange restrictions Good to see more "No Standing" signage and police patrols at the Mawson Interchange. Local people are fed up with disrespectful commuters blocking walkways and driveways and parking all over the landscaping. - Ros Guood Ghost Police Ghost writing is paying others to write assignments for you. Not only is it happening in our universities, it is happening in schools as well. Technology now enables unemployed/retired academics/teachers to sell plagiarism-free essays and assignments. The best deterrent to this illegal practice is a good teacher who can detect a fraud, based on the ability and language skills of their students. I know several teachers who are on alert for cheating students and dishonest parents, but it's a pity that our professional time is taken up being 'ghost police’. - Otis Lymn Ghost writing saves time When I was a university student in Canada it was real easy to find a contract teacher to write my assignments. They were unemployed academics maybe from Kenya, Ukraine or Asia and they would turn in an essay for about $50. I was busy working part-time, and didn’t have the time to do the research required for an assignment, but I earned more than them so paying was easy. It worked; I attended lectures, did some reading on the train and turned in contract assignments and got good grades throughout uni. Unethical yes, but practical. I can understand why students do it, especially overseas students who struggle with language and have to face the high expectations of their parents back home. - Jackie Prices up, service down Christmas is coming up and I want to send cards and parcels overseas but Australia Post has announced a slew of price increases. International economy air parcels will cost $2 more and the cost of a basic postage stamp will rise from $1 to $1.10 from Jan 2020. Slow 4

Walking in Mawson Lakes - friends Laurey, Jacqui and Shirley We live in Parafield Gardens and come over to walk in Mawson Lakes on weekends. We pick up a copy of Mawson Lakes Living at the shops and use it to see what’s on and where to go for coffee. We use the services and tradies in the mag because if they are in MLL they come recommended. We like to support local. - Laurey, Jacqui and Shirley delivery, unreliable service and now higher prices. - Tomi Ursono Sexbots The cover story on ‘Pepper' the humanoid robot in MLL/April caused a stir in our club, but, moving on, the men are now intrigued by the launch of sex robot ‘Emma’. She’s driven by artificial intelligence so she can be taught to respond to human desires and sexual sounds. She is warm and soft, comes with different hair and eye colour, body shapes and facial features. According to the promo, she can replace a human lover. Hey, MLL, next can you do a story on Emma?? - M Herbert Sorry M, can’t do. The SA government has banned the importation of these sex dolls made in China and Japan. For info go online. Ed
Recording council meetings The SA Local Government Minister is considering a raft of reforms to local government. One such reform - the compulsory recording of council meetings, has my support. When councillors know they are being recorded and their remarks are available to the public, (and the legal profession if required), it should force transparency, reduce grandstanding by councillors and curb insulting language. - Colin Rizk Theft at interchange My grandson saved for both his bicycle and his scooter so he was devastated when someone stole his locked bike from the Mawson Lakes Interchange, and then 2 weeks later his locked scooter was stolen. Theft is becoming a serious problem. Please be aware. - Unhappy resident Mawson Lakes powers forward with renewable energy An $8.7 million facility on the university's Mawson Lakes Campus incorporating a solar installation, flow batteries, a hydrogen fuel storage cell stack and thermal energy storage, is part of the government’s plan to reach 90 per cent renewable energy generation in 2020 - Premier Steven Marshall When to water Mulch your garden when the weather gets warmer to keep moisture in. Not in the autumn when mulch keeps rain out. Water early in the morning to avoid the growth of fungus and disease. - Danny Proud, guest speaker at the Mawson Lakes Garden Club Dob in a Hoon Driver - SAPOL Phone App A new mobile app will allow members of the public to report hoon and dangerous driving in real time so police can determine where to deploy patrols, speed cameras and breath and drug testing stations. The new Traffic Watch system can be downloaded from the Apple and Android app stores. - Beau Brug JP, Mawson Lakes Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator
From the Mayor City of Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM With warm weather upon us and the Christmas season rapidly approaching there’s a festive feeling in the air. To make the most of this special time of year a fabulous weekend of entertainment, food and fun has been planned to mark the opening of the Salisbury Community Hub on 30 November and 1 December. Highlights will include live performances, entertainment on the large outdoor screen, kids’ activities, a food market and many more festivities spread out across indoor and outdoor spaces at the Hub (34 Church Street, Salisbury) and the surrounding Salisbury Civic Plaza/Inparrinthi Kumangka. The Salisbury Community Christmas Parade and Christmas Markets are being held in conjunction with the opening event and the Hub’s very own magic cave will be open for young event-goers wanting to lodge their present requests with Santa. I hope to see many familiar faces from Mawson Lakes at the Hub opening weekend and look forward to celebrating with you all. 7 tips for growing tomatoes Tomatoes are grown more than any other vegetable and you can grow them in pots and hanging baskets using the right varieties. 1. Plants need at least 6 hours of sun each day. 2. Dig into soil organic matter with a sprinkle of potash a couple of weeks before planting.
5. Water the soil not the foliage. Water in the morning, not at night to avoid fungus and disease.
3. Train on a trellis with stretchy ties such as stockings.
6. Mulch in spring when the weather warms up, not in autumn so rain can infiltrate the soil.
4. Never let soil dry out, but do not overwater. Use your trusty soil moisture indicator (your pointy finger) to gauge dryness.
7. Practice companion planting such as basil to reduce pests and disease.
These 2 images appear the same, but look closer to find 10 differences. Solution on page 19.

Mawson Lakes Community Garden open to all Strawberries for the picking are now blooming in the Mawson Lakes Community Garden (see cover photo) along with a large variety of fruits (pears, plums, figs, quandong), and vegetables (spinach, lettuce, carrots, spring onions, beetroot, potatoes). There’s also a herb walk (mint, marjoram, thyme, sage) and more... The garden is in the university grounds behind the Adelaide Planetarium (Building P) and is run by volunteers from the university and local residents. Anyone is welcome to pick and gather, so come on over with scissors and a basket. There’s a picnic shelter, drinking water and birds and bees to look at. Mawson Lakes Living has a raised garden plot which we call 'The Purple Patch’ presently growing edibles such as curly kale which adds beautiful purple colour to a salad, chives and yellow mustard. Our wicking bed is surrounded by drought resistant plants -
statice, soft silvery lamb’s ears and lavender. There's also a mixture of companion flowering plants to attract the bees - in purple tones of course. If you’re looking for a place to plant your Woolworths seedlings, this may be it. And if you have pets (chooks, rabbits, guinea pigs etc) that like fresh green leaves, there's plenty here for the picking. Native Bee Hotel
All of the ingredients were found in the Community Garden!
A garden buzzing with bees is a good sign that pollination is taking place. This is a process where pollen is transferred from the male reproductive organs of plants to the female reproductive organs to form seeds. Native bees pollinate native plants. They are smaller than honeybees, they don't sting or produce much honey. To survive they need food (organic flowers) water and accommodation and that's where a man-made bee hotel provides a place to rest and raise baby bees. Native bees live in tiny hollows in timber. Can you find this bee hotel attached to a tree in the community garden?
Just take the leaves you need and leave the rest of the plant for others to harvest from too. Baby Spinach Cabbage Lettuce Kale Mustard leaves Carrot

Beautiful Garden Award
Scented garden Sweet perfume wafts along the street from the sweet peas growing on Tina Dimitriadis fence; especially fragrant in the early morning and at dusk. Tina has a small garden at the front of a small cottage at 46 Windermere Crescent. Each year she collects the seeds from her sweet pea plants when they finish flowering in early summer and keeps them in a jar until the weather cools down (around May) then she plants them directly into the soil along her fence line. The large seeds germinate quickly in the sunny, well drained position. "Sweet peas thrive in cool temperatures so it's
important to get them flowering before the summer heat. I pick flowers every day to keep the blooms coming," she said. Tina uses her fence Beautiful as a trellis for her GARDEN AWARD predominantly mauve and lilac sweet pea. Contrasted Awarded to a garden that beautifies the streetscape at ground level are sharply for all to enjoy coloured snapdragons, lobelia and begonia. A good feed of cow manure, a helping of Rapid Raiser and Seasol keeps her garden in good shape all year.

BUSINESS: Kensington Financial Ages and stages of financial planning Peter Burge from Kensington Financial Services has been in the finance business in Adelaide for more than 20 years, and more recently in Mawson Lakes. He has seen a lot of changes in that time. One of the greatest change is the shifting sands of superannuation.
"Continuous change leads to confusion, and our job is to keep on top of the changes and give advice that best suits our clients" "People need to structure their finances differently at different stages of their life and a financial planner can give advice to the young and not so young" said Peter. For example: Young people may have expenses related to education, buying a car and moving out of home, so considerations may be to pay off debt, live within a tight budget and build their savings. Good advice early on can make a difference to their financial passage through life. Family and career building years usually revolve around career building, starting a new business, raising a young family, saving for their child's education. It’s an expensive stage of life where
Financial planners at Kensington Financial Serves Peter Burge and his son Simon.
financial considerations may include income protection and life insurance, seizing business opportunities, maximising savings, minimising tax and investing to accumulate assets. Retirement means working less and relaxing more. To do this a person needs enough resources so there is no need to take a step back in lifestyle. Advice on turning assets and pensions into income, along with information on estate planning and options for assisted living become goals. Peter said that many people only think about their finances when they are getting close to retirement but a smart person will seek advice early and start a plan for the things they want and how they will achieve them by making the most of what they have. Caring For Your Feet
with Mardi Edwards As the weather warms up we tend to kick off our shoes and hit the beach in a pair of thongs. Whilst thongs do not provide feet with ultimate support and protection needed for long periods of walking, they are a convenient way to protect your feet from the hot ground. However, wearing thongs can cause foot and leg pain such as heel, achilles, forefoot and calf pain.

Not all thongs are created equal. Some features to look for in thongs include: • arch support and heel cup to improve foot support • elevated heel similar to a shoe to reduce load on calf and heel • soft piece between toes to reduce friction • tight straps to reduce the need to claw toes to keep thongs on At Mawson Lakes Podiatry Clinic we stock Archies thongs which are designed with the above mentioned features, while still looking like normal thongs. So if you are sick of flat thongs causing you pain and ruining your summer, then try a pair of Archies. Archies thongs are available in 9 fashion colours including black, navy, sky blue, white, mint, coral, pink, brown, and taupe, and retail at $35. They are great for the beach, traveling, or as a Christmas present.

A 'walk-change' for dogs by Nigella You've heard of a sea-change or a tree-change, well here’s a 'walk-change' for dogs. I love exploring new parks and I have recently discovered Oaklands Reserve in Marion. It's a large urban wetland with lots of shady trees, grassy sweeps and interesting walking tracks. Best spot is crossing the big stepping stones in front of the wetland weir. It’s a slash'n'dash for me and muddy wet paws. Oaklands Wetland catches stormwater, cleans it naturally in ponds and stores it underground, same as we do in the Mawson Lakes wetlands. There’s a skate park where we sit and watch kids jump high in the air, and we walk on boardwalks across ponds that are full of birds. Notices remind people not to feed bread to the birds. I spotted a good notice saying what is OK for the birds.
We took a handful of oats to the park and the birds gobbled them up. The notice says that other food for birds are peas, corn, finely chopped lettuce, cooked rice and birdseed. If you’re looking for a nice place to go for a 'walkchange' try this. Dogs must be on a leash, but a kilometre up the road there's an off-leash park for big dogs and another for little dogs. It’s called Hazelmere Road Reserve. Try this walk-change full of fun and adventure, especially if the family lights up the free gas BBQ.
If you have a favourite park, drop me a line with your pic to nigella@mawsonlakesliving.info
