Time to take off your shirt Father's Day is on 4 September so this issue is full of ideas to help you spoil dad. MLL has turned pink to welcome the start of Spring. And colour is accompanied by bright content with stories on start-up businesses and enterprising people in pursuit of their dreams.

to mark their opening this month - see opposite. Winter is over and the warmer weather brings movement and stronger trade, so if you have capacity for more business, use our lifestyle magazine to tell people about it. Our regular advertisers say how well it works for them. They keep coming back month after month because the people of ML want to support local, so they turn first to MLL. The end of winter also means it’s time to get your rig in shape. To find out who can help you look your best when it comes time to shed your shirt go to page 26 .

Our cover story is about a young woman who has opened an elegant cake shop on Metro Parade. In another profile, a plumber has started a business The MLL designer tells me it's time to take off my specialising in irrigation with the catchy name shirt too. She wants a new photo, so here’s me _____________ ‘Adelaide Rainmaker’. When your lawns begin to this month sans shirt ready for Spring. dry out you’ll want to call him (see page 10).

Community Conversations

have your say...

Women in power With the election of Theresa May as Prime Minister of Britain we are seeing more women in very powerful positions. Mrs May is now in charge of the world’s fifth largest economy. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel leads the fourth largest economy, and when/if Hilary Clinton presides over the United Sates, she will head the world’s largest economy. Now, coming right home to Mawson Lakes, a woman is Mayor of Salisbury which is one of Adelaide's fastest growing regions, and the Hon Susan Close is our local MP and a State Minister. I must say I appreciate the way Susan Close talks to us every few months through our community magazine. Relevant communication with the people is the sign of a good leader. - Angi Grange Planting Pomegranates I was inspired by your report in MLL/July to plant a pomegranate tree because of their luscious fruit. Then I read that scientists claim that pomegranates hold a miracle ingredient that can hold ageing at bay. The scientist’s excitement centres on the pomegranate’s ability to keep mitochondria (the tiny battery packs that power our cells) charged up. Normally mitochondria run down with age, possibly leading to muscle weakening and frailty. Let's fill ML with edible pomegranates and when scientists come to discover our suburb's secret of youthfulness, say just one word- POMEGRANATE! - Larry Cameron First choice for business MLL is delivered to my business letterbox in Innovation House. It's a very welcoming magazine which is useful for me as a new member of the community. We were so impressed with Mawson Lakes that when we were tossing up whether to set up our business in the city or West Lakes we considered Mawson Lakes and we are now very happy with our choice. - Joe Di Pietro

Hi Linda, here we are at the Watershed Cafe. Picked up a copy of MLL looking for a place to have lunch. Saw the ad for the Watershed. Great scenery, great lunch, great magazine. - Lloyd, NSW Garbage Interference I do not like it when an old man walks my street with a big hessian bag and rifles through the garbage bins on collection day looking for cans, bottles or whatever. I have shooed him off but he and others keep coming back. Does Salisbury Council have any rules about interference with waste that has been placed in council-supplied bins for collection? - Julia on The Strand. MLL sought a response from Salisbury Council on this matter. Here is their advice. Under Section 4 in the Waste Management Section, By-Law 6 it states that a person must not remove, disperse, or interfere with any household waste, hard waste or recyclables (including bottles, newspapers, cans, containers or packaging) that have been placed on a road or any other place for collection by council, its agents or contractors. Contact Council on 8402 8222 to report problems.

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 111 - September 2016

Canyons of Mawson Lakes Yet more ugly, cheap-slab-construction is going up in Mawson Lakes. Residents are concerned that Mawson Lakes is changing from an elegant suburb in the North to a suburban slum full of featureless, high-rise buildings that are creating shabby streetscapes and dark canyons. The closely-spaced, grey, square-boxbuildings have no colour or character. Their only ornamentation is washing hanging on verandas and boxes used for outside storage. The place is becoming dominated by crass construction, going up without sufficient parking spaces. We have an oversupply of boring apartments and retail space (many vacant) which is reducing the value of real estate in Mawson Lakes and downgrading its reputation as a beautiful, environmentally-conscious suburb. ML had the potential to be a show-case university suburb, but it has lost this opportunity. Cheap design, greedy over-development and poor council control has killed the vision. - Dr B Hijab

New Business Putting love into food A display counter of delicate cakes, rose infused sugar cubes and mouth-watering edible delights sits alongside romantic wedding cakes in the elegant new shop in Mawson Lakes called CAKE by Jenna Marie. Owner Jenna Vozzo relocated her French-inspired shop from Payneham to Mawson Lakes a few months ago because she was finding it too far to travel each day from her home in the northern suburbs. "As soon as I saw this shop with its wide glass frontage I wanted to fill the big window with beautiful things and bring something very stylish to the northern suburbs." Jenna who cooks all her cakes on site, using only quality ingredients, says that business is booming. "People are calling in for artisan coffee, brunch, afternoon teas and a lunch of croissants, baguettes, homemade soup, salads and frittatas. We also have bookings for birthday parties and special events."

Her joy is to create food that stimulates all the senses - sight, smell, taste, sound (French music) and touch. She laughs that her perfectly shaped and delicately coloured macarons took her two years of trial and error to perfect. "We eat with our eyes," she said, "so the first impression as you step into my shop is most important." White decor, pink teapots and fine china placed on French-styled furniture certainly creates an atmosphere of beauty and elegance that reflects the cook’s creative flair and her love of all things French, vintage, pastel and graceful.

• You can't go wrong with a snazzy accessory from Vodaphone (p20)

• Start dad's day with a yummy Father's Day Breakfast from Indulge (see page 9)

• Meal Deals from Salvatore's Pizzas will fill him up. Dads always go better on a full stomach! (see page 11)

• Arrange a family photo from Chaviq and position dad at the centre of the family (p27)

Voice of the People: FATHER'S DAY Father’s Day is a time of celebrating all that makes our dads great. Whether it be a lovingly cooked meal, time with the family, presents or showering dads with love, we all have our own ways of showing we care. We asked some of the mums and dads of Mawson Lakes how they were going to celebrate Father’s Day. - Jonathon Tonkin By the time a man realizes his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s all wrong.

"In our culture kids are the most important so we'll probably go into the city for a meal and take the kids to Toyworld."- Ma and Sun.

New Business - Adelaide Rainman Are your pop-ups popping up? Are your lawns looking sick? Are plants doing poorly, or is there pooling around your metres? You need a plumber. The man to call is Adelaide Rainman, Will Farthing, who has just started a business in Mawson Lakes specialising in irrigation. "I can turn my hand to any plumbing job toilet leaching, leaking taps, blocked sewers, downpipes and gutters, but I get the greatest satisfaction from setting up an irrigation system. You set it up, turn it on, the sprinklers pop up and everybody starts to smile." Will did a plumbing apprenticeship in the Australian

Army in the School of Military Engineering. He has worked in Darwin and more recently in Unley and now he has bought a house in Shoalhaven which he describes as a "little gem". "I would like to work locally and no job is too small for me. There’s no call out fee and I can be contacted at any time." For contact details see ad below. Ed

Bunions What are bunions? A bunion is a bony bump that sticks out the side of the foot. It is most commonly at the base of the big toe. Bunions can be painful when walking and also tend to rub on shoes. Shoe pressure is both uncomfortable and restricts footwear choices making life miserable. What causes bunions? Contrary to popular belief, bunions are not caused by ill-fitting shoes. Tight shoes may cause pain and make bunions worse however they are not the primary cause. The most common cause of bunions is faulty foot mechanics. The way the foot works puts pressure on the bones and causes changes to foot structure and appearance. Because foot mechanics and foot types are inherited, bunion deformities often run in families. Treatment There are many treatments available to improve comfort and mobility. These include, appropriate width and depth footwear, orthoses to address foot mechanics, and padding and taping to reduce local pressure. Whilst these treatments are often effective they are unlikely to straighten the toe. If they are insufficient to improve comfort and mobility then an appointment with a surgeon may be required. Surgery would be used to straighten the toe. There are a variety of surgical procedures used depending on age, activity level and severity of the problem. If you have painful bunions contact the clinic on 8262 9999 and make an appointment to discuss your options.

Meet Hannah Manuel, one of our team of lawyers and our registered Migration Agent with experience in migration / visa matters.

I’m married to an American citizen who wants to live in Australia permanently. What are our options?

A

Consider applying for a Partner Visa. This is a two stage application over two years. You will need to apply for a Subclass 820 (Temporary Visa) and also a Subclass 801 (Permanent Visa). If you are legally married you will satisfy the first hurdle of the application, but you can also apply if you are in a de facto relationship. You will be required to sponsor your partner and any other dependent family members who are to be included in the application. Your partner will need to satisfy the character and health requirement which will require a full health examination and police clearance, both inside and in the United States.

At the second stage of the application you will need to provide evidence that you are still in a relationship with your partner. There are four categories which will need to be satisfied, including the financial aspects of the relationship, the nature of the household, the social context of the relationship and the nature of your commitment to each other. The second stage of making an application can be the most complicated, as in some cases, if all of the required evidence has not been obtained or provided at the time of application it may result in your visa being refused. It is important

to obtain proper advice prior to making an application. If you have a partner who would like to live in Australia, contact our registered migration agent and solicitor Hannah Manuel for advice. (Migration Agent Authority Number: MARN 1678779.)

Movie Review Belle and Sebastian This engaging French film, beloved around the world, is about a boy (Sebastian) and a dog (Belle) that is as appealing to soft-hearted adults as to kids. The first film called Belle and Sebastian was released in 2013. Now we have a follow up called Belle and Sebastian, The Adventure Continues. Set in 1943 in the high snowy Swiss Alps in the midst of WW11 the two movies are visually stunning action dramas. The plot opens when the Germans have arrived in Sebastian’s peaceful village looking for resistance members who are helping Jewish refugees escape into Switzerland.

There are some tense and suspenseful moments such as the Nazi occupation of France, a threat to Belle from the hunters, drinking and death - but the film avoids gratuitous violence and keeps the details appropriate for a younger audience. Tension and subtitles makes the film best for tweens and up. This is the sort of children’s entertainment that is rarely made these days. There are strong portrayals about protecting the weak and fighting for what you believe in, as well as several positive role models who act compassionately and bravely in the face of grave danger. It is through facing such danger and adventure that Belle and Sebastian forge an indestructible friendship. Ed The DVD is available in English from the Mawson Lakes Library.

Dogs in jackets by Nigella

At a sheep station in the Flinders Ranges where the sheepdogs thought I was an escaped lamb.

Blazing a trail in the arid landscape around Spencer Gulf

I’ve been bush. Winter is the best time to go inland, so we took off for Port Augusta via the Flinders Ranges. Our destination was the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden at Port Augusta. Dogs can’t go into the botanic garden but there is a doggie park just outside the entrance and lots of bush walks in the area. The walking tracks cross red earth bordered with drought resistant scrub, and we ventured along beautiful red cliffs overlooking Spencer Gulf. I really like exploratory trails like this where I can push ahead and show mummy the way. The Arid Festival is in Port Augusta in September so it's a good time of year to go north (see page 3 for details). As we drove along bush roads mummy pointed out sheep, kangaroos, horses and emus and when we stopped at a sheep station I came in contact with a kelpie who must have thought I was a lamb mutant. She was fascinated by a little dog with coloured ears wearing a purple jacket!

Suki in her rain jacket with owner Steph negotiating the puddles.

Talking about jackets - the dogs in Mawson Lakes have been rugging up against the chilly weather. Below are some of my friends out walking in the early mornings wearing their colourful winter wear.

Blue booties give extra protection against the wet.

Recipe Passionfruit and Lemon Slice My neighbour gave me some lemons from his backyard tree in Mawson Lakes so here’s what I did with them - in a few simple steps I converted the juice into a devilishly delicious slice with a beautifully topped creamy and tangy layer. Here’s how. BASE 125g butter melted 1 cup SR flour 1 cup caster sugar 1 cup of coconut Combine all ingredients and press into a baking tin. Cook in moderate oven until golden (about 15 mins). Cool for 10-15 mins to allow base to harden, then spread passionfruit topping over the base.

TOPPING 1 can condensed milk 1 can passionfruit pulp ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice Whisk ingredients together until smooth. Pour over base. Reduce oven to 150 degrees and bake for 15 mins. Leave the slice to cool completely before cutting into slices. This is by far the hardest step! Ed
