A picture of who we are Remember the Census back in November? Well the results are out and Mawson Lakes Living has drilled down into the data to find out what it tells us about the people who live in Mawson Lakes. Overall, compared with the Australian average, we are a well-to-do suburb with a young population and strong family representation, well educated, with many high income earners. To read the specifics go to pages 8-9. We are also a fit crowd. However, trends in fitness are changing and this month MLL takes a look at this and offers a range of fitness options, from gyms, to sporting clubs, to cheerleading. Jump inside our 12-page Fitness Liftout (starting on page 11) to see the options available locally.
"The Messenger" newspaper will no longer be delivered in Mawson Lakes. The first response of everyone I have spoken to is, "good, that will cut down on litter", but the question arises, where will local people go for services and local news? The answer is Right Here. Mawson Lakes Living reaches into every corner of Mawson Lakes every month, bringing you unique stories about local people and giving locals a voice. Also local services, new developments and upcoming events. See our story about the international chef who has just set up shop in Mawson Lakes. If you want to talk to the people of Mawson Lakes about your products and services this is the place to be seen and heard. Details on page 31. If you want to be on the front cover of MLL talk to me.

Cars obstructing the footpath Every afternoon I take my grandson for a walk around the streets of Mawson Lakes in his stroller. At some points it is impossible to get by on the footpath because cars and trailers are parked across the footpath or on the verge. I have to walk on the road. Worse still, cars hang over their driveways, some with bullbars that can rip your shins apart if you knock into them. In other cases, trade vehicles have pipes and things protruding at head level into the footpath and if you are looking down you can do damage to your face and eyes. Are there rules against this inconsiderate and dangerous parking? Cars parked illegally Under the Australian Road Rules cars that are parked illegally can be fined. The footpath and verge, whether paved or grassed, is council property and cars parked across walkways, cars that overhang a driveway onto the footpath and cars parked partially or completely on the verge are parked illegally. If residents have concerns they can call Council on 8406 8222 or lodge a request online at http://www.salisbury.sa.gov.au/ Home and select "Report a Problem" and follow the prompts. Council will inspect the site and take action. John Darzanos, Manager Environmental Health and Safety, City of Salisbury Escaping the urban condition I agree with the comments in MLL/July that renounce population growth for SA. I am moving from Melbourne which is growing at an unprecedented pace. I want to get away from outrageous rent, crippling mortgages, choking

congestion and an endless sprawl that locks you into tedious travelling. Compared to this, SA looks very appealing, especially Technology Park and Mawson Lakes where I plan to work and live. J Whinnett Submission for Post Office in Mawson Lakes The response has been terrific and we have hundreds of community comments. We have just started a digital petition so please sign and share with friends: www.change.org/p/australia-postaustralia-post-we-want-a-post-office-in-mawsonlakes. Also a facebook page to promote the cause www.facebook.com/Mawson-Lakes-Post-OfficeProposal-1140426712767371/ Feel free to send me an email with ideas/ issues/advice/arguments. For the submission to be successful we need to show there is great community support for a PO in Mawson Lakes. bbrug@salisbury.sa.gov.au Let’s feed the ducks right Feeding water birds is a really fun thing, but feeding them right is important. Throwing out bread, cakes and rice is injurious to birds. It fills their stomachs and bloats them and can kill them, and the wrong diet can produce deformities in their babies. Instead, go to the pet shop or produce store and buy a bag of chicken/ duck pellets that are not expensive. Throw them sparingly and the birds will come swimming over and play around in front of you. We come from Northgate with our little girl and bring a jar of duck food for a really nice outing. Karla Continued on page 6

Purse returned Through the pages of MLL I want to thank the young lady from the TROPICANA fruit shop at Mawson Central who found my purse on the counter. Her husband returned the purse with all the contents to my home later that day. It is a lovely feeling knowing that we live in a community where people are honest and look after each other. Glenys Lancaster Shopping trolley solution In reply to abandoned shopping trolleys (MLL/Aug) I would like to see here what I saw on a holiday to Queensland. They have a perimeter around the shopping centre car parks where if trolleys are taken over that line the trolley locks. This surely would save a lot of abandoned trolleys per year and the cost of replacing trolleys, savings that could pay for putting the perimeters in place. Carol Zimny Boutique city Let me compliment MLL on an excellent cross-section of opinion in the July issue about population growth. Growth that is political scoring will undermine the very things that differentiate Adelaide as the "lovely liveable city". Adelaide is a boutique city, small but smart, vibrant, accessible and cultured. Let’s not lose this. Serena Marafoti Dogs in dim light I have just bought a nice home facing onto the main lake. I do a lot of walking and running around the lake but I am concerned about the amount of people walking their dogs around the main lake not on any leash. This is out of control. You have to be extremely careful when running up to and behind someone that has their dog without a leash just before sun rise or sun set as it would not be safe to pass some of these big dogs in dim light. John Signore Scars on the landscape an insult to residents The further delay to the building of the Fitness Loop in the parklands along Dry Creek is another case of mismanagement of a Council project that will result in further costs to ratepayers, resident anger and delays. One day in June, earthmoving equipment moved in and dug huge holes in the parkland along Dry Creek, then workers erected ugly wire fences around the holes, finished off with 6
Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 123 - September 2017
flapping orange bunting. When construction started, no signs were placed on fences to say what was taking shape. Word of mouth told us it was going to be a fitness loop. These holes and fencing have been there now for three months. I consider this to be an insult to residents. Delay after delay and a long string of excuses has curtailed the project which was supposed to be finished in July. Anticipation has turned to sour condemnation of Council’s mismanagement of this project and disregard for local residents. Jon Jones Erosion of Mawson Lakes environment Letters to the editor reflect that people are not happy with the declining standards in our town. I can’t help but agree. Mawson Lakes started out as a lovely setting, featuring the lakes, creek and many grassy areas. Gradually this is being eroded. Resident action had to stop the plan to develop a fishing centre, playground, toilets etc at the western end of the lake, and now there will be a three-storey block of units built at the Boulevard end, blocking much of the view from each end. One wonders how the authority was obtained for this eyesore. If you love this place, phone or write to the Council and Asset Development Office and protest – it’s up to you before we lose it all. Mike Holtby Mardi I needed a podiatrist to attend to my feet. For years I'd been reading Mardi’s column in MLL so this is where I went. What a professional experience, so knowledgeable, so friendly and so convenient. Debbie Van de Moulengraaf Too soon; the end I’m addicted to MLL. Every month I read it from front to back. I reckon it's the best magazine in Adelaide, with a succinct mix of local information, intelligent comment and good-natured humour. My favourite page is 28 and I always save this for last, like a box of nice chocolates. The only problem is, when I get there, it’s the end of the magazine. I’m always disappointed. I want more. After traversing the world and catering to prominent members including one of the former Chinese presidents, and UK-based soccer stars, among other dignitaries, the former Merchant Navy employee decided to open his own café. "We heard that the Food Barr was up for sale. We drove in on a Saturday afternoon, checked out the place, and fell in love with it," says Eric. "Also, we love Mawson Lakes! It is a cultured neighbourhood, neat and tidy. Eventually, we are planning to move here as well," said the Gawler resident. Higgins has brought many changes to the place - from the décor to the food served. "We make and sell the world famous Di Bella Coffee. We also make our own rolls, sandwiches, lasagne, fresh burgers. On chilly days the soups and eggplant parmesan go flying off the roof, so do our breakfast muffins," he adds. His future plans include helping organise meetings, like Coffee with the Councillor, among others. "We want to get involved and do more for this community," said Eric. Talking to an astronaut The Australian Air League has a beautiful motto - A Vinculo Terrae which translates into "Free from the bonds of the earth". For young Ryan Mattner from Mawson Lakes the motto gave him the courage to free his imagination. It also made one of his many dreams come true - to talk to an astronaut stationed in the International Space Station. As a member of AAL, Ryan and his co-members were invited to write down questions they would like to ask an astronaut. His simple yet interesting question, "What do you do in your spare time" found its way to NASA. Twenty questions were sent to NASA who relayed them to the astronauts who had to get their answers ready before they spoke to the cadets so as not to waste time. "We get only eight minutes with the astronauts before we lose contact, therefore it is imperative for the astronauts to have the answers ready beforehand. The contact is organised by amateur radio stations located in San Francisco in collaboration with NASA," explained Ryan.
Marc and Ryan
Ryan’s question was picked up by Thomas Pesquet, an astronaut of French nationality. He responded by saying that he loves taking pictures of the Earth in his spare time. He said it was spectacular to do that from the International Space Station. Ryan who is a fan of space-related movies like Apollo 13 and Gravity said the whole experience was fantastic and surreal. "It was great to get a chance to speak to an astronaut!" he said. Gayatri Nair

Changes in the fitness business Residents value local services and convenience, said Michael Carpenter, manager of Plus Fitness at Mawson Lakes. Our gym is open 24 hours a day, every day and people come in at all hours which is especially useful for shift workers. Michael, who started his career as a school PE teacher, has seen many changes in the fitness business. He said that virtual classes projected on a screen are now very popular. For example, you can hop on an exercise bike, tune into a channel and pedal through the mountains of Switzerland with virtual scenery, or pick any destination you fancy. Outdoor training is another favourite, also dance and boxing classes.

"We are seeing a significant increase in female bodybuilding sports using weights and resistance training. Some of our clients enjoy competitions, such as the rapidly growing bikini contests where competitors are scored on proportion, symmetry, balance, shape and skin tone. This is attractive for women who want to be lean and firm but are not willing to be as muscular as male bodybuilders. Muscles are the latest fashion for women."

Foot pain can really slow you down. Ongoing issues such as shin splints, Achilles tendon problems, heel pain, nail thickening and blisters are common because sport amplifies the forces between your feet and the ground. Podiatrists treat sporting related foot pain by evaluating a number of factors. We assess the mechanics of the foot and leg by measuring mobility and strength and considering how your foot structure and function affects your lower limbs. Using stretching and strengthening exercises, and orthoses (devices in shoes) to reduce abnormal forces through the feet, we can reduce foot pain and improve mobility.

by Kirra
Cheerleading is a relatively new sport to Australia and has recently become a part of the Olympics. It requires strength, flexibility, teamwork, persistence and confidence. It involves some dancing combined with tumbling, holding people above your head, and throwing them in synchronized routines to specific counts.
stunt group also perform gymnastic tumbling as part of the routine.
Every person has a job to keep the stunt together. Bases are the people who hold the flyer, they have to make sure their grips are correct so no one gets hurt and that they have the strength to hold and throw the person on top repeatedly and not get tired or drop them. The flyer is the person in the air, they have to be flexible as they have to do the splits and mid-air poses, they also have to trust the bases not to drop them. The last person in a stunt group is the back spot. Depending on abilities, most members of a
Conditioning and strength training are crucial to being a cheerleader, as well as flexibility. At training, we always start by stretching to help with flexibility and to limit the risk of injury. The Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation run several competitions a year. The State Championships are in September and the Nationals are in Melbourne this year in November. Dance Inc offer cheerleading classes at Greenfields for all ages and abilities. Phone 0404 230 182.

Though accepted in the 1920’s, in 1847, despite evidence showing that washing hands reduced infant mortality from 11 per cent to 1 per cent, the idea was rejected due to the entrenched established scientific opinions of the time! What is Dyslexia? Today, the field of Dyslexia is battling an entrenched position, that Dyslexia is only a phonological issue and that only extra reading time in small groups using a synthetic phonics approach will overcome this disability. However, research shows that while phonological issues are the main cause of difficulties, and the use of synthetic phonics approaches is essential, other underlying factors may need additional or different interventions. We’ve waited more than 100 years. The term Dyslexia was first used in 1887, and researched over the years by ophthalmologists, neurologists and educators, often disagreeing. We have found that poor information processing can prevent individuals from benefiting from extra teaching and tutoring. Interventions to develop information processing "tune up" the brain – improving the ability to read and to benefit from teaching. What is evidence? Normed testing shows that after taking part in interventions, many no longer fulfil the criteria for a dyslexia diagnosis. That’s good evidence! Have questions? Come to an information session.

KID'S CORNER To many children, teens and adults around the world, 2017 is a special year because it celebrates Harry Potter’s 20th anniversary. That’s right, 20 years ago (1997), JK Rowling published the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This book was only the start of many. Just in case you don’t know, Harry Potter is an amazing book series, and now movie series, that follow a young boy on his adventures. He is a powerful wizard, who lives in the Gryffindor house ("where dwell the brave of heart") He participates in a life threatening tournament,

has an invisibility cloak, has ridden a dragon, broken into an unbreakable bank and so many other things. Did I mention that the most powerful, evil wizard is trying to kill him and a prophecy says that neither can live while the other is alive? In these 20 years there's been 7 books, 8 films, 1 play and 2 theme parks made, with hopefully more to come, but did you know that there might not have been a Harry Potter world at all? JK Rowling’s book was refused by many publishers before it was finally sold. Since then it's been translated into 73 different languages and sold more than 500 million copies worldwide. Now, it's the bestselling book series of all time but that’s not all.

Short Get-Away
by Nigella I like to go scouting and bring home good ideas on dog-friendly places where you can take your family for a nice get-away. This month I want to tell you about Auburn, a bit over an hour’s drive north of Mawson Lakes.
This little country town looks very ordinary from the main road but behind the highway it’s full of charm, doggie people, parks and gorgeous walks. Cute historic cottages have been turned into B&Bs and we stayed in one of these dog-friendly places. Lots of eateries with outdoor seating are ideal for dogs. One example is the Rising Sun Hotel in the main street. It's an award winning pub and we could see why. We were there in winter so we had to sit outside for dinner while everyone else was cosy inside around an open fire, but the dog-adoring publicans turned on the overhead heater on the
balcony for us and they gave me big cuddles. Walks around Auburn's historic leafy streets and parks, and along the creek and over the quaint bridges are a treat, but the best walk was through the pine forest at the back of the oval. The pine trees form a magical canopy over the pathway and the smells are super delicious. One night we decided to have a BBQ at our place so it was into the car to buy some meat up the road at Clare. A stop at O’Days Butchery was everything I dream about. I never go past a butcher shop without stopping at the door and wagging my tail furiously in anticipation. Well, father and son butchers Mike and Dylan O'Day didn’t disappoint. I sure did get a warm welcome here and a few meaty bites. Love the butcher! As a thank you for their kindness we gave everyone a copy of Mawson Lakes Living and invited them to come and visit our lovely doggie suburb. See photos opposite.

Useful Numbers
My family and I enjoy living in Mawson Lakes, we love the walking paths, parks and local services. As I have talked with people in our local area, they have raised their ideas for making Mawson Lakes even better. Now with the State Labor Government’s Fund My Neighbourhood Program, we all have the opportunity to do just that. $40 million is being invested into the Fund My Neighbourhood Program, providing an opportunity to implement local projects across South Australia. Projects that could have terrific benefits for all of us living in Mawson Lakes. The projects can be as diverse as a new playground, community gardens or improving bus-shelters. The best part of the program is that not only will communities like ours be able to make suggestions about projects but the community will decide where to spend the money. If there is something you think needs to be fixed or improved, I encourage you to share your ideas with me at http://bit.ly/ fundmyneighbourhood
