but the one for readers is Mawson Lakes Wetlands. You will have to scroll down, down, down and down to find it.
The Festival of Lights (FoL) is an Indian-inspired event coming to Mawson Lakes next month. Support from local communityminded people is making this event, run by volunteers, possible for all to enjoy. See page 6. People in Mawson Lakes say they are hungry for community events that engage locals and add colour and vitality to our suburb. But it costs a lot to stage a community event. Mawson Lakes Living invited local businesses to make a contribution to the Festival of Lights. To highlight advertisers in this issue who have displayed strong community spirit in this regard, a Purple Splash has been added to their advertisement so you know who they are, and hopefully you will support them in return. A strong community exists when people pull together and support each other. The beautiful photograph opposite of the Mawson Lakes Wetlands has been entered in a photographic competition called Through The Lens. The competition offers a People’s Choice Award and I am seeking your support to vote for the Mawson Lakes Wetlands shot. There are hundreds of captivating photos in the competition which are displayed in an online gallery, at www.sa.gov.au/seniorscard/photo Mawson Lakes Living is an independently owned community magazine for people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. Advertising is open to anyone with products, services or events relevant to the people of Mawson Lakes. See page 27 for advertising details. Voters are allowed one entry only from the online gallery. Winning is not about the prize which is rather inisignificant; it's about putting the spotlight on Mawson Lakes and showing a beautiful vista of our suburb to the rest of Adelaide, taken one recent winter’s morning when Nigella and I were out walking along the wetlands trail. We often stop to marvel at the beauty of our suburb. Voting closes on 21 September. Your vote will make a difference.

Community Conversations
have your say...
Connected to the community In a world of modern technology it's easy to lose connection with real people and feel isolated, that’s why I look out for MLL each month. I like to open my letterbox, hold the magazine in my hand, read it and touch it and see photos of places I recognise. I cherish its simplicity and I read all its stories and the ads and it makes me feel part of my local community. - Loretta De Palmer Curbing crime If your house or car has been broken into, or your neighbours have suffered this insult, come along to the Neighbourhood Watch meeting and hear what is being done to curb crime in Mawson Lakes and how you can better protect your house, belongings and family. The next Neighbourhood Watch meeting is 20 September at 5.30pm in the Mawson Centre - Cr Beau Brug, Coordinator NHW Keeping cats in Each evening my dog Pluto and I go running in Mawson Lakes. Pluto can smell a cat a mile off and we can testify that the place is full of wandering cats after dark. We support a ban on cats roaming outside their properties. Some cat-loving homes have built spacious cat enclosures and this is a great idea. One cat-friendly house in The Cove has a mesh enclosure around their upstairs balcony so the cats look down upon us in safety and we look up and admire their feline form, and all is harmonious - Gary and Pluto Cat Curfew I can’t image that a law to keep cats in can work. After all, dogs have masters, cats have servants; dogs have bosses, cats have staff, as Fred and Ginger so elegantly put it in MLL/August - Pete Aldrin Housing sales Submarine building and space exploration are attracting foreign investors to SA. Mawson Lakes, Parafield Gardens and Morphett Vale were identified as top selling suburbs in terms of recorded sales over the March quarter - Real Estate Institute of South Australia. (REISA) 4
Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 135 - September 2018
Living in The Bridges Most of my family have moved to Mawson Lakes and every month we look out for Mawson Lakes Living because we like to support local and also know what’s going on. We think The Bridges is paradise with its warm community of neighbours and without any high-rise. It’s only an 8 minute walk to the train and the shops. Archie loves it too because he has lots of doggie friends and plenty of good walking trails. - Elisa and Archie, The Bridges Cat Talk Fred was very chuffed to be in print in MLL last month and wants to know if he can write more. He has had fan mail !!! - Roslyn Interchange stairs and ramps Despite all the back slapping and selfcongratulation from Salisbury Council, the stairs on the western side are only open down to the ramp, but the rest onto Augustine Street are fenced off. When will the project be completed or is this another case of the poor planning which is evident throughout Shoalhaven? - Gavin Mitchell More say in planning There’s a lot of negative talk in MLL about Council’s ineffective control over development. When challenged, Council says they are powerless to act because planning is in the hands of the State Government. Now, under proposed reforms to the state’s planning system which have been released for public consultation, councils are campaigning for a stronger role in designing their neighbourhoods and protecting the character and quality of their suburbs. There’s strong community support for local government to be the local decision maker. - Lisa Teburea, Local Government Association of SA
Public safety zones The Federal Government is considering new safety zones around all airports in Australia (including Edinburgh and Parafield Airport) to minimise the loss of life and property in the event of an aviation accident. This would ban any further development in the exclusion zone. Yes, this will have an impact on the economic potential of the area, but surely safety is paramount for people who live and work near an airport. - K Keelan Airport here to stay Parafield Airport started operation in 1927 and it’s not going anywhere. The land is leased from the Commonwealth until 2048. The airport is a substantial local business that employs 1300 people (on and offsite) and it contributes a quarter of a million dollars into the local economy. In addition to flight training the airport serves country flights bringing people, mail, medical emergencies and freight to Adelaide. - Barrie Rogers, Parafield Airport Manager

Liveability We are Year 7 students at Mawson Lakes School doing a geography assignment to make an advertisement on why you should live in Mawson Lakes. We are preparing a video to show what makes Mawson Lakes so great for families. We wanted a well-known person to say a few words, so thank you Linda for agreeing to be on our video. We always read Mawson Lakes Living particularly "Youth Talks". - Kelly Nguyen and Yzabelle Maniwang (12)
MORE COMMUNITY EVENTS When doorknocking I hear that community events and engagement is constantly being raised. I can see the suburb is changing. Since being elected in May 2017, I have held regular 'Coffee with the Councillor' meetings to meet residents to hear their concerns and in this short time there are new upgrades to Mobara Park, additional drinking fountains, return of Matsuri Japanese Festival, Christmas Carols and an extension of the Salisbury Fringe. I established a Neighbourhood Watch to improve community safety and co-founded a Lions Club that supports community and charity. Both great community groups to get involved in. Additionally, I am organising a second Clean Up Mawson Lakes Day on Sunday September 16, 2018. Anyone interested please meet me at 9am Indulge CafĂŠ, with tongs/gloves and we will clean up our suburb. It has been a busy year and a half, since my initial election but there is much more to be done. I thank you for your support in the by-election last year and I ask for your number #1 vote to re-elect me to Council to continue to fight for our community. Every Vote Counts. If you wish to raise any council matter or would like to meet me please contact me. If you believe that I am doing a good job, I would appreciate your support in the coming election. Best Kept Secret It’s one of Mawson Lakes’ newest and best kept secrets: from within UniSA’s Mawson Lakes Campus, Brightside Deli have been serving up their delicious coffees, cold press juices/smoothies, freshly made paninis and piadinas and house-made pastries and cakes. Pulling the shots behind the Deli’s coffee machine is owner Jacinta (pictured) who followed her passion for coffee and people to make the bold transition from corporate lawyer to cafe owner. She tells us about the Brightside Deli concept: "Brightside is all about great coffee, wholesome, handmade food and friendly people. We are passionate about using local ingredients and sustainable packaging and we do what we can to give back to our local community in whatever ways we can."
"We support a variety of different causes and we value our wonderful partnerships with groups such as UniSA’s 'Community Garden' who are currently helping us to cultivate our very own inhouse herb garden."
"We are so thrilled to be part of a community as diverse, ever-growing and enthusiastic about what we do as Mawson Lakes is and we always love welcoming new visitors in to Brightside Deli for coffee, lunch or an afternoon glass of wine in our courtyard. Locals are welcome so call in and see us at the back of the MM building, opposite the Mawson Lakes Hotel."

Healthy eating at Romeo's Foodland An appetite for fresh, low calorie food is driving the popularity of sushi and at Romeo’s Foodland only the freshest quality ingredients from local suppliers are used. Foodland’s sushi chef Tae Won who grew up in South Korea and got his passion for the art of sushi from his father, said that the quality of our product is the same as in the top restaurants, only half the price.
"Sushi is a culinary art form and people make their choices based on the presentation of the food, its smell and colour. We have a lot to offer here." Sushi is nutritional, high in protein, good carbs and low in saturated fat. Its seafood wrappings are a feast of healthy vitamins and minerals. Steve from Nationwide Finance comes in every day to place the office lunch order at the sushi bar.
Tae Won says we have lots of delicious combinations to choose from at the Foodland sushi bar for a light lunch or a healthy snack. It’s a perfectly portable meal.

Restaurant Review
Mint Leaf Lounge, Mawson Lakes A gorgeous sparkling chandelier brought all the way from India greets guests as they arrive at the Mint Leaf Lounge. Elegantly decorated and perfectly positioned overlooking the main lake, the restaurant offers fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere. The menu features a comprehensive selection of authentic Indian dishes, along with some fusion offerings and plenty of choice for Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten-Free diners. The chef is more than happy to cater to western palates and we were delighted to be able to request mild and chilli-free versions of everything. We were greeted with complimentary papadums and Indian crisps accompanied by a trio of delicious dipping sauces, and our starters arrived soon after. The seafood tasting plate was divine, featuring tasty morsels of chick pea battered barramundi bites, pepperfried squid, melt-in-your-mouth tandoori salmon and my favourite, vodka flambĂŠed chilli aioli prawns. All of the mains came with free rice. We sampled a mild butter chicken enriched with cashews and cream, a delicious, intensely flavoured vegan chickpea and potato curry and sopped up the sauce with blue cheese and chicken tikka naan. The highlight for me was the calcutta prawn curry with curry leaf, mustard seeds and tamarind - and the biggest, fattest, juiciest prawns!
Ad design: Nicole Aspinall
Dessert was an attractive trio of Gulab Jamun, a classic Indian fried dumpling in sugar treacle, alongside a sticky date pudding and a stunning tower of Kulfi - a traditional ice cream with rose water, cardamom, saffron and pistachio. Delicious! The food is high quality and affordable and servings are very generous, luckily we were offered takeaway containers for our leftovers! Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards Work and your feet Any work that involves walking or standing for long periods of time can impact your foot comfort. Your feet and legs have to cope with forces up to twice your body weight, and pain in heels, arches and balls of feet are common. Standing or walking for extended periods of time on hard surfaces can predispose you to foot and leg pain. It is important if you work on your feet to change position regularly to avoid overloading of joints and muscles and keep comfortable. Hard surfaces like concrete or tiles, lack flexibility and can add to foot fatigue and discomfort. It is important to wear good fitting, comfortable shoes which will absorb shock and provide your feet with support and protection. Poor fitting or inappropriate footwear can contribute to the development of corns and calluses, bunions, hammer toes, and nail problems in addition to issues pertaining to nerves and joints. The first step to comfortable feet is appropriate footwear.

In addition to reviewing your shoes, podiatrists assess foot and leg function to determine if any mechanical factors are causing your discomfort, in which case orthoses may be used to alleviate the presenting problem. We are involved with the management of existing foot conditions and the prevention of foot problems.

How true it is, especially with your teeth.
Many tissues in the body are capable of healing and Dryour Peterteeth Bertossa regeneration, unfortunately areBDS not one of them. Damage to teeth is generally permanent. Worse still, once a tooth has a small amount of damage, perhaps requiring a small filling, throughout the life of the tooth the filling will require replacing several times. Each time the damage to the tooth gets worse. This can also result in the tooth dying and therefore the need for further invasive treatment such as root canal treatment. If tooth loss occurs, expensive replacement treatments are required.

Canine Language
by Nigella
Who says dogs can't talk. Wrong. Mummy and I chat away all day long. She uses words, and I use other ways to get my message across. Happily, she has no trouble decoding canine language. When I feel like a play, I grab a toy from my toy basket and throw it in the air a couple of times. She picks up the cues ... and it's game on. FEED ME The reseach shows that dogs often use their snout and head to nudge the humans's hand; while others hold one paw in the air or stand on hind legs. SCRATCH/PAT ME Some dogs roll over in front of their human or make short shuffles along the ground while rolling over, or llft a back leg while laying on their side. PLAY WITH ME Some dogs will touch a human with a single paw while others just dive headfirst under a person or object. It works well to deposit a

I'll be at the FESTIVAL of LIGHTS
Humans have a variey of devices to tell them the time, but I have an inbuilt clock and I always know exactly what time it is, but often when mummy is working at her desk she forgets it's mealtime so I go up to her and nudge her. "Ah," she says looking at her watch, "you’re hungry, let's go get something to eat." In a recent study in Britain, scientists looked at canine language by filming and analysing the daily movements of 37 dogs and they found that dogs use different language to ask for food, a pat, a play and to go outside. The results are below. If you're not getting your way with your humans, try some of these canine conversation starters. toy at a human's feet and it's cute if you put your head and paws down, back end up and wiggle. OPEN THE DOOR FOR ME Try tapping your paw or head against a door or just sitting still in front of a door. I rattle the front door with my feet and mummy comes running knowing that it must be urgent.
The Future of Work: Humans and machines working together
The future is going to be better than you think. That might be hard to believe given the constant stream of dread in the daily news about job losses. But mankind's future may not be as bleak as we fear. Kirk Drage, entrepreneur-in-residence at the University of South Australia, was speaking at a business forum in Mawson Lakes when he said the new economy offers opportunities in every industry. "Work has shifted from doing work to creating automation that does the work for us; providing more reliable services and products that make for better living." "We are on the cusp of the fifth industrial revolution where robotics and mechanisation are essential tools and data and software are driving change."
"Anything that is routine or repetitive can be turned into data and managed through software. As old business models break down, software is at the centre of the new business model." Kirk Drage
Equipped with artificial intelligence, computers have minds (algorithms) that allow them to make decisions and direct robots to do the work. We see this happening across every industry - self-driving cars and drones are improving the efficiency of transportation and delivery services, Netflix is pitching personalised entertainment and 3D printing is adding value to manufacturing. While large companies are shedding jobs, new companies are creating jobs. Think of sustainable futures in energy, such as battery storage, which is data driven, and the desalination of water in remote areas which will make farming lands arable. Growth is in the non-routine industries, those requiring innovation and using exponential technologies. "When humans and machines work together, innovation is unlimited, problems are solved and exciting jobs emerge," said Kirk. Ed
