Business growth in Mawson Lakes Last month it was a pleasure to have Martin Haese address business owners at a networking function in Mawson Lakes. Martin is the former Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide and now the CEO of Business SA. He described Mawson Lakes as very impressive with a lot of innovative practice. "SA doesn't need to get big; it needs to be smart," he said.

Business SA Chief Executive Officer Martin Haese with the editor at a business networking function in Mawson Lakes.

Why is there a car on a bush track on this month's cover? What's it got to do with Mawson Lakes? Well, this year the Variety Bash started in Mawson Lakes at Codan in Technology Park and the sendoff drew a huge crowd. The 8-day Bash raises money for children in need, and Mawson Lakes Living was there to soak up the atmosphere and capture some of the excitement so I could report back to you. See the story on page 5. Mawson Lakes Living is an independently owned community magazine for people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. Community Conversations

have your say...

Keep it simple The new name for the civic square surrounding the community hub in Salisbury (yes, that one costing $43 million) is "Inparrinthi Kumangka". It's an aboriginal word meaning meeting together. What a dreadful name - not because it's aboriginal but because it's too hard to say and even harder to spell. Instead of this display of political correctness, why not something simple that we can all relate to, pronounce and spell. - Fatima Sidlik Financial self sufficiency or the pension? We worked hard in our young years to secure our future by growing our superannuation, building our own home and investing in property to give us an income in later life. Then along comes money-hungry governments who cannot seem to manage a budget, so they change the rules around super, raise taxes and increase council rates and government levies. We question: instead of financial self sufficiency is it better just to live in a rented property (where the owner pays rates and levies), and plan to become pensioners? Rather than contributing to the economy in our old age, we would take from it. - Eugen Kelly Road problems As the North expands, building better roads is essential. Main North Road is a major artery yet it is a mess. Between Gepps Cross and Gawler three lanes merge into two lanes, then back to three lanes, reducing to two again. The lanes weave and twist and have merging incoming traffic. This results in lots of dangerous lane-swooping and uneven speeds. As the North expands, infrastructure needs to be in place to cope with increased population movement. - Carol Teoh Religious marketing The promise of heaven, and the treat of hell are the marketing tools of religion, but as modern society rejects these unsubstantiated claims, religion is losing its hold and Israel Falau's rant is irrelevant. - Andrew Kalvas 4

Pulling a crowd The response to our advert in MLL was amazing. We placed a half page ad last month for our Father’s Day function and within one week we had more than 100 enquiries. The response to our ad for Mother’s Day was even greater. This is the only print advertising we do and Mawson Lakes Living works brilliantly for us because it reaches into every corner of Mawson Lakes. - Bec Schoff, Sales and Marketing Coordinator, Mawson Lakes Hotel and Function Centre

Heavy vehicle traffic on Elder Smith We have just moved back to The Sanctuary and have noticed all the heavy vehicle traffic that crosses Salisbury Highway and onto Elder Smith over the train bridge. Congestion on the bridge is bad at any time but these double trailer vehicles really slow things down. Is there a by-pass that trucks can use? - Elaine Horder

Smiles along the miles Hooters, sirens and music punctured the air at the start of the 2019 Variety Bash in Mawson Lakes last month. The 8-day adventure across 2,946km ended in Murray Bridge. It raised $1.94 million for the children’s charity. At the start, 94 festooned cars lined up in Mawson Lakes, many with catchy names such as 'Never Grow Up', 'Hillbillies', 'Galahs in a Falcon' and 'Glamorous Eggs'. Teams dressed in crazy costumes and the motor procession was a carnival spectacle. Cars had to be at least 25 years old and team members had to raise a minimum of $9,000 to participate. Codan in Technology Park opened their gates for the event and the cars and crowds poured in. Codan CEO Donald McGurk said the electronics company was thrilled to donate their spacious grounds. And enroute, Codan ran the high frequency radio communication between official cars in remote locations. "This is a vital behind-the-scenes aspect of the event," said Mr McGurk.

Glamorous Eggs: Tania, Roz, Michelle and Helen entered their purple 79 VB Holden Commodore and raised $15,300 for the event.

Barry Reid in a 1978 Toyota sponsored by Bendigo Bank said they loved to hand out presents as they travelled through country towns. "In places it was rough going on country roads and through private farming properties but it's all about 'smiles along the miles' as the bash cars pass through rural and remote towns." "I love to see the farm kids running down the paddocks to see the colourful parade and collect the giveaways." he said. Ed

Sue Reid (from Mawson Lakes) with Barry and their son Mark who entered a car sponsored by Bendigo Bank, and along the route handed out presents of money boxes, keyrings and baseballs.

Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards

Incorrectly Fitted Shoes You may be wearing incorrectly fitting shoes and simply not be aware of it. If you experience foot pain which is relieved by removing your shoes, then they may be the problem. Poorly fitting footwear can cause a range of foot issues such as heel pain, blisters, nail discomfort, corns and calluses, and pain under the ball of the foot. They can make walking painful thus reducing daily activity. Here are some hints to help with shoe selection and fitting: •

There needs to be 1.5 cm between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Remember your big toe may not be your longest toe. Check that the widest part of the shoe matches the widest part of your foot. Make sure shoes are comfortable and not putting pressure on any toes or joints. Most people have one foot which is larger, make sure your shoes fit your larger foot. Your shoe size may vary depending on shoe brand and style. It is often better to shop for shoes at the end of the day when feet are at their largest. Have your feet professionally measured and shoes fitted.

Make sure your shoes are comfortable, sit less and move more.

Frog Symphony by Nigella It’s a noisy time in Mawson Lakes if you live near water. The boy frogs are out at night serenading the girl frogs after dark. Boy frogs sing for a purpose. It's like a profile on a dating website: "Here I am! I’m big and handsome! My genes are excellent." When a girl frog with eggs hears this dating call she’ll hop or swim in that direction. When the male senses a female in front of him, he will give her a big long hug from behind and transfer his genes and fertilise her eggs as she lays them. A girl frog can lay up to 150 eggs.

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 147, September 2019

Mummy and I often walk along the wetlands and hear the froggy symphony that's heavy on percussion. One night we recorded the sounds on our iPhone and sent it off to the Australian Museum’s Frog ID to find out what sort of frogs we have. Every species has a different call sound so the museum can tell you the type of frog just by hearing their croak. Back came the answer by email. Our frogs are Common Eastern Froglets (Crinia Signifera). These little creatures are hard to see in the reeds because they are dark brown and blend into the landscape. Pictured is a pool near our place along the Pledger Wetlands where the frogs go wild at night. I've added purple frogs to the picture for fun. How many can you count? (Answer is on page 19)

Youth Talks by Sophia Hello, my name is Sophia. I’m 8 and I live in The Peppercorns in Mawson Lakes. Last year my family went to Bali where I got to visit an orphanage called The Jodie O’Shea House. The orphanage was built in memory of Australian Jodie O'Shea who tragically died in the Bali bombing in 2002. A small team of people have 94 children in their care, the youngest being Rizzone who is 20 months old. They are funded by the kindness of friends and visitors. We made friends with some of the older kids and took them shopping to buy essentials such as much-needed food, water and daily things. I returned to Mawson Lakes from Bali vowing to support the orphanage as best I could and visit them again. I ran a lemonade stand in The Peppercorns and with donations from my family and friends I raised $1,060. The money was donated directly to The Jodie O’Shea House.

Goodbye Lexie Ever since she was a little puppy, Lexie the black labrador followed her owner Mike Holtby around the streets and parklands of Mawson Lakes. She passed away last month at the age of 14. For eight years she was a therapy dog at Helping Hand at Mawson Lakes where her gentle nature made her a favourite visitor for the residents who looked forward to seeing her every week. RIP my beautiful friend. - Nigella

Last month I held another lemonade stand and when we went back to Bali in the school holidays we put the money towards purchasing food, vitamins, basic necessities and clothing. CCTV CAMERA CONSULTATION Although community safety and policing is inherently a responsibility of the State Government and Police; I will do all that I can to help keep our community safe as your local Councillor and as the Area Coordinator of Mawson Lakes Neighbourhood Watch. One of my election commitments was to ask Council to consider a rollout of portable CCTV cameras that can help tackle the community issues of graffiti, illegal dumping, hoon driving and more. I am proud to be delivering on this commitment as Council are now doing this and I want your feedback on where to place them! Please advise any streets and areas that I need to be aware of: • • • •

Illegal dumping Graffiti Hoon driving Anti-social behaviour

In order to stay connected, you are invited to a Coffee with the Councillor on Saturday September 21 at 9:30am - 10:30am at La Vita, Mawson Lakes. Please send me an email if you have any feedback or any Council issues or ideas you would like to raise: bbrug@salisbury.sa.gov.au THANKS Beau Brug, Councillor for West Ward Mobile 0430 188 175 E-mail bbrug@salisbury.sa.gov.au Facebook: Councillor Beau Brug JP 18

EVOLUTION

A small boy asked his father,

"Where did people come from in the beginning?" His father replied, "Adam and Eve were put on earth by God and they had babies, then when the babies grew into adults they had babies and their babies had babies and so it went on." When the boy asked his mother the same question she told him a different story,

"We were monkeys and we evolved over time to become humans like we are now."

Confused by these two versions the boy went back to his father and said,

"Mummy said we came from monkeys!" His father replied: "Your mum was talking about her side of the family..."
