Living Coral Sunsets over Mawson Lakes can be showstopping. I frequently see people halted in Deputy Mayor Julie Woodman with their tracks, MLL editor Linda Vining cameras at the ready as the sky blazes with night-time glory. I chose this month's cover photo for a special reason. Read on. . . Each year Pantone announces an official colour and this year's colour is Living Coral, a hue that is brilliantly displayed on the cover. Pantone says Living Coral is a nurturing colour that appears in our natural surroundings. They describe it as "a reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedded into daily life. It symbolises our need for optimism, joyful pursuits, and it embodies our desire for playful expression." Optimism, joyfulness and playful expression are fitting sentiments for Mawson Lakes Living in 2019, so look at how we have worked the colour throughout this issue. Mawson Lakes Living is an independently owned community magazine for people who live, work, study and play in Mawson Lakes. Speed cameras It’s a pity that police have to use a big stick to correct the behaviour of speeding motorists. After all, everybody knows the speeding regulations. I welcome back laser-speed cameras and hope to see more on the highways around Mawson Lakes. - Mita Dolman Dob in a hoon Long straight roads in Mawson Lakes attract hoon drivers with their noisy, smelly and downright dangerous antics. Hear about hoon driving from a SAPOL officer and the new anti-hoon laws. How can you report dangerous driving such as tailgating, running red lights, speeding, burnouts, donuts and snaking. Who do you call and what information do you need? Find out at the next meeting of Neighbourhood Watch on 13 Feb. See page 12 Starvation Professor Miklavcic is motivated by a crisis - not enough food to feed the world’s expanding population (MLL/Jan). In Australia where obesity is a growing problem we can’t imagine that others are starving. I have just returned to Mawson Lakes from war-torn Yemen where twenty million people are hungry, facing starvation, malnutrition and death because they have no food. - Ajung Nakaahiki Bombs bursting in the air Thank heavens we are past the season of fireworks. What an awful waste of money, but even worse are the bursting bombs that terrify animals of all sorts. The loud and sudden explosions can send animals into a panic, causing them to jump fences, break chains, and run through screen doors and even glass windows in an attempt to escape. Animals who run in fear may be hit by cars or simply disappear forever. After fireworks displays, animal shelters everywhere report an influx of lost animals, some of whom have injuries caused by their attempts to escape the deafening explosions. We have too many firework displays and they last too long. - Jakko Burkland

Overdevelopment at The Cove There is vacant land next to the Heritage House (67 Douglas Drive) at The Cove which has recently been surveyed. Council has said it is for a proposed 18 townhouse development. The street is a quiet, residential street where 18 townhouses would add extra cars into a tight space and downgrade the area. The residents along the street were not consulted about this proposal. When is this greed and overdevelopment of Mawson Lakes going to be controlled? - Sandy Jansen Zoo’s future Took my kids to Adelaide Zoo for the last time now that the giraffes, elephants and sea lions are being moved out. The days of traditional zoo with small enclosures are over. The city is no place for animals. Time to return the city zoo to parklands and the animals to Monarto where there is plenty of space. - Julie Sexton Cracking down on illegal parking Illegal parking on narrow streets and across driveways (shown below) makes it difficult for motorists to get about, and it forces pedestrians onto the road. Garbage trucks, delivery vans and emergency services have difficult access too. Council inspectors will be out in force acting on illegal parking so if you see wrongful parking take a photo, note the location and contact the council on city@salisbury.sa.gov.au or 8406 8222

Meet the Deputy Mayor MLL interviewed the newly elected Deputy Mayor of Salisbury Council following the council elections in November. Julie Woodman will be Deputy Mayor for the next two years. She talks about her roles and goals. What is your role as Deputy Mayor? To stand in for the Mayor at events and council meetings when the mayor is unavailable. I expect to take on a greater leadership and mentoring role within Council. How long have you lived in Salisbury? I moved to Ingle Farm 45 years ago and have been a Councillor for the past ten years representing South Ward. What changes have you seen over this time? With the huge increase in business enterprise in Salisbury there have been major infrastructure and housing development. Mawson Lakes is a shining example.
6
What are the main issues that residents raise with Council? Planning matters, tree problems, illegal dumping, lack of parking, verge maintenance and hoon driving are the most regular issues. There are now more women than men on council – 9 women including the Mayor and six men. What do you think the four new young women will bring to discussions? They are confident, articulate and enthusiastic about their roles. They have shown interest in improving amenities, environmental issues and financial matters and they have been asking pertinent questions.
Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 140 February 2019
What are Council priorities for 2019? • Employment opportunities as a result of attracting new businesses and industries. • Improved affordable housing and transport options. • Adequate parking spaces. • Improved communication procedures for residents. • And, seeing the Salisbury Hub completed. What does the introduction of the Australian Space Agency mean for Mawson Lakes? Support industries in Mawson Lakes will be encouraged by having the Space Industry on their doorsteps as well as UniSA and Technology Park. It will be a boon to Mawson Lakes.

Coding Club at the Mawson Centre After the roaring success of the robotics program, the Mawson Centre has added a Coding Club to their repertoire of youth programs to enhance a STEM focussed education. The Coding Club aims to teach children the fundamentals of computer coding within a fun group environment. The club is for students between 8 to 13 years old. Andrew Murray, Community Development Coordinator at the Mawson Centre, says the club encourages kids to bring their laptops and download SCRATCH software.
Andrew says the program enables students to improve their problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills, and move through the levels at their own pace. The classes are held at Mawson Centre every alternate Tuesday from 3:45 pm to 5 pm. Price is $25 per term. "We are the first community centre in Salisbury to have such a programme, and we are considering including more advanced levels later this year," said Andrew. Contact 8302 5449 or email amurray@salisbury.sa.gov.au
"This is a visual programming language which helps kids learn the basics of coding and allows them to create fun, interactive games, stories and animations." They are also asked to practice the lessons learnt at home. MAZE: Which robot gets to the battery first? Solution is on page 23.

Up until recently, teeth with very large cavities were fixed with a "crown".
When a Dentist does a Dr Peter by Bertossa BDS crown, first the tooth is prepared shaving the whole tooth down to the size and shape of a small cylinder. The crown then is effectively a sleeve that glues down on top of this cylinder and has the shape and cosmetics of a natural tooth. Sadly for the tooth, a crown is an invasive procedure and all of the shaving down can sometimes have the unintended consequence of nerve death. Advancement in dental technology now allow teeth with large cavities to simply be scanned with a 3-D camera following very minimal and non-invasive preparation.

Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards
PAIN The main reason people see a podiatrist is because of pain. Feet are complex structures responsible for keeping us mobile. IN A MINUTE A man climbs to the top of Mt Sinai to get close to God for a talk. Looking up, he asks the Lord, "God,
what does a million years seem to you?" The Lord replies "A minute." The man asks, "And what does a million dollars mean to you?" The Lord replies, "A dollar." The man asks, "Can you lend me a dollar?" The Lord replies, "Certainly. In a minute."
Pain stops us from doing the things we want or need to do, like walk the dog, play sport, or chase after grandchildren. As podiatrists, we see people with a variety of pains from many different causes. Some of the conditions we see include; sprains and strains, tendonitis, arthritis, shin splints, heel pain, corns and calluses, blood clots, neuropathy, warts, and ingrown toe nails . No single treatment works for everyone, which is why it is so important to see a podiatrist to get an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your specific condition and needs. Treatment for pain may include things such as stretching and strengthening exercises, anti-inflammatory medication, taping, padding and dry needling. The use of specific footwear and or orthoses to improve foot function may be required to reduce the load on foot and leg structures to improve comfort and help prevent future injury and pain. Podiatrists are health professionals trained to diagnose and treat lower limb and foot conditions.

Passing your assets to your loved ones with Matthew Tripodi People work very hard to pay off their home and accumulate assets during their lifetime and they want to see their hard work benefit their loved ones. Making sure that your estate planning is in order is critical to ensure that your assets pass to your intended beneficiaries with as little cost and as few complications and delays as possible. Estate planning starts with a Will. As the saying goes "there is no such thing as a free lunch." Similarly there is no such thing as a free will. With trustee organisations, there is no upfront cost for preparing a Will if they are appointed as your executor. On your death, the organisation will normally charge a commission based on the value of your estate. For example, some organisations will offer a free will, and then charge for the cost of preparing the Will and administering the estate when you die. So a small estate worth $400,000 (a modest house and other minor assets) would cost $15,400. The cost for a lawyer to prepare a Will and administer an estate is likely to be less than $3,000. People will pay a real estate agent thousands of dollars to sell their house to a stranger, but are reluctant to pay a lawyer a fraction of that amount to help transfer their assets to their loved ones. Beautiful Garden Award
Cool Garden When temperatures soar day after day, it’s hard to keep a garden looking good. Many gardens in Mawson Lakes suffer sunburn and thirst at this time of year, but there’s a small garden at 4 Atiu Street that presents a lovely cool green display even in the hottest weather. MLL asked gardener Kevin Kennedy how he keeps his garden of lilly pillys, conifers, buxus and liriopes in such healthy condition. "In the hot weather I water by hose every evening and feed with seasol once a week. My twelve lilly pillys love the sun and their shiny green leaves produce a wonderful contrast in foliage from deep glossy green to bronze in new growth. The naturally dense growth and fast growing habit of lilly pilly makes them perfect for shaping."

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 140 February 2019
"I cut back all my plants by hand to keep their shape because regular light pruning encourages fresh growth which gives a cool effect". There’s not a weed in sight in this garden because a layer of decorative stones sitting on top of a weed mat keeps out intruders. "I like things to be neat and tidy and I guess my garden reflects my personality," said Kevin. Ed

Best Walk in Adelaide Nigella Usually all the emails we get are addressed to the MLL office but this email from a labrador came to me.
Hi Nigella Your story on 'Walking the Wetlands' (MLL/Jan) was a call to my family to adventure into the Pledger Wetlands, and what a great time we had. We parked in Emerald Street and set off along the wetlands track beside the railway line. Saw where all those doggie photos were taken in last month's mag. The track was so green with lots of free space for me to run and play ball. I think I found one of your balls in the bushes down by the water's edge. It had a N on it. Would that be yours?
Nigella, Mollie & Oscar
And, ah, the smells from the p-mails . . . We kept walking till the trail brought us to Shearwater Lake and a change of scenery. My mum was dragging the chain to stop and look at the grande houses and gardens. We had to keep calling, "MUM, COME"! Crossed over the main road at Shearwater Lake and headed along the shady linear pathway to Parkview Drive Reserve where the kids wanted to play on the swings and things. Gave me time to chat with the local canines.
Then we headed off along the Dry Creek River Walk, and near the primary school crossed the main road under the bridge right down at creek level (safe, no cars). Kept walking along the riverside track full of big birds in the nearby reeds (pity I'm not allowed to chase birds or dive into the water) and back to the Pledger Wetlands where our car was parked.
Archie
Took us about an hour. Nearly lost dad on the outdoor fitness equipment along the way - "DAD, COME"! This was a fabulous loop walk with something for everyone. My family has voted it one of the best walks in Adelaide. Now that’s something, because we do a lot of outdoor stuff. Thanks Nigella for your page which we love to read. Only regret is we didn’t see you along the way, but we saw the big water bowl outside your place. Maybe see you next time. We’ll be back.
Love, Lido the Labrador Pics of my friends along the walk...

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 140 February 2019
Is the dog Catholic? Muldoon lives alone in the countryside with only his dog for company. When the dog dies Muldoon goes to the parish priest and asks, "Father, my dog has
died; could ya be saying a mass for the dear creature?" Father Patrick replies, "I’m afraid not; we do not have services for animals in this church, but go try the Baptists down the lane, as there’s no telling what they practice, maybe they will do something for the dog." Muldoon says, "I’ll go right away Father. Do ya think that $5,000 is enough to donate to them for such a service?" Father Patrick exclaimed, "Sweet Mary Mother of Jesus! Why didn’t you tell me the dog was Catholic?"
