Trevor Matz, HSE Manager – Western Region, eagerly embraced the opportunity to participate in a diesel engine fundamentals course led by Cummins Technical Trainer Drummond Gray.

The detailed course gave participants hands-on training in a classroom setting.

Drummond ran the class through the basics of engine operation, engine subsystems and all the associated components.

He also covered the various grades of fuel and refinement, distinct types of energy, what power is and more.

Trevor and course participants were tasked with the challenge of stripping down an ISF 2.8L engine to the core.

The activity showed them how the components interact with each other. Afterwards, they pieced the engine back to its original form.

QSOL aids technicians

Drummond also taught the class how the program QuickServe OnLine (QSOL) assists technicians in their daily work, and various exhaust aftertreatments that protect the environment from otherwise harmful exhaust by-products produced when burning diesel fuel.

Reflecting on the course’s usefulness to occupational health and safety, Trevor said it enabled him to better understand the work of technicians on the shop floor.
