I think it’s safe to say that 2016 has been an interesting year. Everything from the drastic fall in oil prices to the unexpected result of the US presidential election reflects a major deviation from our projected future. However, as the New Year beckons, so do new opportunities for either progress or redemption where need be. This issue, we interview a number of leading hotel GMs in the country, who highlight the importance of the burgeoning hospitality sector to the country’s economy. On the cover, we have the dynamic new general manager of the Capital Club, Parth Vaya Sumeet Jhingan who spoke about his plans to turn the Deputy Editor exclusive members-only club into an institution for 6

Kuwait ‘saves $229m’ since removing fuel subsidies

Junaid Perfumes wins major award

KSA: Saudi Arabia’s King Salman underlined the kingdom’s intention to invest heavily in speeding up its diversification away from oil exports with the inauguration on of a $35 billion mining and minerals processing complex. Riyadh has tried to reduce the economy’s reliance on oil for decades, but the challenge has become particularly urgent in the past couple of years as low prices have pushed state finances deep into deficit and growth has slowed sharply.

KUWAIT: Kuwait has saved $229 million since removing the subsidies on fuel, according to local media reports. The Gulf country introduced new fuel prices three months ago following the decision to remove subsidies on fuel. During that time the savings have averaged just over $76 million per month. Kuwait is planning to remove another set of subsidies from April 2017, with the introduction of new chips for electricity and water consumption.

QATAR: New expats to Qatar will have 30 days to secure a residency permit under a new sponsorship law. The ‘kafala’ legislation is due to come into effect this month after being approved by the Qatari Emir last year. One of the key changes in the new law is that expats will apply to the government rather than their sponsor for an exit permit, making it easier for some to leave the country or change jobs.

ExquisitE MovEMEnts IntervIew wIth Jaeger-LeCouLtre regIonaL Brand Manager, MarC de PanafIeu Considered by industry experts to be one of the most innovative watchmakers in the world, Jaeger-LeCoultre has enjoyed 180 years of pioneering success in its field. We speak to the company’s regional brand manager, Marc de Panafieu to find out more about the brand’s operations in the Middle East and Levant. What, in your opinion, is so special about the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand?

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s distinguishing factor is that we are a manufacturer, and produce the timepieces ourselves – something very few other watch brands do. All our products are handmade by around 1000 professional watchmakers at our headquarters in the Swiss Alps, where the company was founded in 1833.

Could you give us an overview of the size of the company’s operations in the region?

In the Middle East and Levant regions, we operate a network of six boutiques: three in the UAE, two in Saudi Arabia and one in Kuwait. Apart from these boutiques, we sell our products through a number of retail partners in other countries. In Bahrain, we work in association with Bahrain Jewellery Centre, who stock our watches at their outlet in Moda Mall.

Tell us a little bit about the special models that JaegerLeCoultre presented at Jewellery Arabia.

Master Ultra Thin Perpetual

28

JANUARY 2017

While Bahrain Jewellery Centre has a stock that represents our brand well, there are a few models that they do not normally sell here. Jewellery Arabia gave us a great opportunity to showcase some of these models to a number of our potential clients. Among the models that we highlighted were: the Rendez-vous Tourbillon, the Reverso Classic, and the Master Ultra-thin Perpetual, which was featured in the Hollywood film Dr. Strange.

Reverso Classic

What are the company’s marketing strategies for this region?

While digital marketing is becoming more prominent around the world, I think it is especially so in the Middle East. This is because the internet penetration in the region is very high, making online communication extremely effective. However, when developing marketing strategies, we always have to take into account the local specificity. We thus try to adapt our content in a way that ‘speaks’ to our target audience while remaining true to the brand’s values.

What plans does Jaeger-LeCoultre have for next year, in terms of new products or regional expansion?

The GCC market is one that is currently growing at a rapid pace. Hence, we are constantly looking for opportunities to expand our presence in the region. With regards to our product range, we at Jaeger-LeCoultre take great pride in the fact that we are considered innovators in the world of watchmaking. You can expect to see a number of unique new models by us early next year.

Could you give us an overview of the size of Vacheron Constantin’s operations in the region?

From our headquarters in Dubai, we control the brand’s operations within the region from Lebanon to India. We have two boutiques run by ourselves in Dubai and five external boutiques run by our partners in Lebanon, Qatar, Kuwait and here in Bahrain. We deliberately do not have a large number of outlets as we like to remain exclusive. We retain a traditional, manual method of craftsmanship which also does not allow us to produce the same quantity of watches as other brands.

Tell us a little bit about the new models presented at Jewellery Arabia.

For Jewellery Arabia this year, we brought something very special. We combined the tradition and heritage of Vacheron Constantin with the heritage of the Arab world. The ‘Metiers d’Art Gyr’ expresses pure traditional craftsmanship, with a hand engraving of the gyr falcon against a backdrop of the desert sand and night sky. It is a limited edition model, with only ten pieces produced.

What are some of the company’s marketing strategies for these watches?

Timeless elegance

Interview with Vacheron Constantin Regional Brand Manager,

Alexander Schmeidt

With a rich 261 year heritage in the art of fine watchmaking, Vacheron Constanin is the epitome of the “luxury Swiss watch manufacturer”. Regional brand manager in the Middle East, Alexander Schmeidt, gives us further insight into the company’s legacy. How did you get into the luxury watch industry?

I was born into the industry, as my father, and his father before him, ran a watch distribution business in Austria. So, I caught the watch bug quite early on! I finished my education and was on a different career path initially, but I always knew that the watch business was where I wanted to be.

What, in your opinion, is so special about this brand?

The brand has the longest uninterrupted history in fine watchmaking. This is very important as a rich past helps you produce a better future. Another unique element is the company’s restoration department, which is able to completely restore any watch from the brand’s 261 year history.

30

JANUARY 2017

Online marketing is obviously very important in this region, which has one of the highest penetration rates in the world. But I believe that we need to offer our potential clients a 360 degree experience that allows them to immerse themselves in the brand’s heritage rather than just put an ad in front of their face. My objective is to provide them with this experience at every touch point that they might have with Vacheron Constantin, whether it is through some form of media, or at a point of sale.

What plans does the company have for next year, in terms of new products or expansion?

We will continue to share the Vacheron Constantin experience through a number of exciting new products that we will be releasing next year. There will be a strong investment in this region next year, as Vacheron Constantin strongly believes in the region’s potential. Metiers d’Art Gyr

CatCh the Worm! The Real Reason leadeRs Wake Up eaRly By Jose Paul Martin I’ve tried it all, accountability partners, apps, the latest tactics, techniques – anything and everything – but that doesn’t take away the fact that I’m still stuck in front of the computer! That’s not what I wanted… I wanted more time. Call it lifestyle entrepreneur, lifestyle trader or lifestyle investor – whatever you want – but what I really want is more freedom to do what I want, without sacrificing the only limited resource I have – time. We all have 24 hours in a day, so how do you find time for ANYTHING. Good question, one that deserves an answer. Let me start by waking you up to reality.

Wake up. (No really… it’s time to wake up from that slumber you’re in right now) That’s it. We’re all given an equal number of hours to spend each day. How we use them is the difference between success and failure. Whilst I do believe in working hard, I don’t think working hard is a virtue. What I do think is more important is being efficient with the time when you work hard. I’m talking about taking ‘smartcuts‘ (as coined by Shane Snow) and not shortcuts – something that is wider, nobler and smarter. There are a couple of ways to do that, but let me share with you the most impactful. Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Ben Franklin advised over 300 years ago. He was right.

Start Your Day early

If you’ve read the Miracle Morning (by Hal Elrod) – the only thing about you need to take away, is waking up early allows you to get ahead of others because you’ve started your day earlier. This is another version of what we call – the early bird catches the worm. Head over to your bedroom right now (or fix the alarm on your smartphone – I guess you check that every morning) and set 32

JANUARY 2017

your alarm clock one hour earlier. Even better, go to bed one hour earlier, believing that you’ll wake up early… yes, I stopped using the alarm clock so I could wake up naturally. I haven’t used an alarm clock for the last 7 years.

So rise early and get started on…. wait for it…. you don’t need to read the entire book, just remember these points: 1. Glass of Water 2. 10m of meditation 3. 10m of positive reading 4. 10m of writing 5. 10m of workout

Your Brain the Battery

“But I’m a night owl” you say – I don’t care… you can fool yourself, as much as you want, but the science is this – as you get tired, your decision making will power is reduced – that’s why so many of us give in to junk food during the evenings and late nights – it’s when we’re the weakest mentally, and temptation, well there is no temptation at all.

“We’re all given an equal number of hours to spend each day. hoW We use them is the difference betWeen success and failure.” Your brain functions better after a good rest – it’s like a battery that has just been recharged. Neuroscience is teaching us more about our brain – and the facts are, we haven’t been paying due attention to it as we should be! Getting enough sleep is a force multiplier — everything will improve from your health, energy, mood and of course to your creative thinking. Studies show that successful entrepreneurs typically get to work one hour earlier than their employees. My previous CEO probably knew this as well. He – put in a more blunt way… “I don’t care about the last 5 hours – I care about the first 5 minutes”. He was hard to beat… he was either the first or second person in the office at 7 am!

Do Stuff that Counts!

Here’s the secret sauce – do things that matter – don’t do stuff that’s easy – do stuff that counts. If you do the easy stuff, you’ll end up not doing the hard or difficult stuff that really needs to get done for you to make progress. As you go through the day, I can almost guarantee that your energy levels will dip and you won’t be able to do the difficult stuff. So do stuff that matters to your business or project – that’s all that matters, everything else is just a waste of your precious time. All of what I’ve said above should not surprise you – it’s all common sense, but unfortunately common sense is not in common practice. You’ll probably read all this and think… I should do that. Unfortunately, most won’t. Would you? Take action today! He is also the Managing Director of Eqoris Advisors - a boutique corporate advisory firm based in Bahrain.

How Three Fitness Enthusiasts Turned Their Passion Into a Career 34

january 2017 August 2016

EntrEprEnEur nfulfilled by their careers in the world of finance, fitness enthusiasts Bader Altaranja, Yusuf Jawad and Mahmood Saeed decided to start their own professional training facility. Mettle Fitness Solutions offers personalised training programs to meet each of their client’s health and fitness goals. Bader tells us more. What inspired you guys to start Mettle Fitness Solutions? What certifications or qualifications did you obtain in the field?

Frustrated with our jobs and inspired by a talk by the philosopher Alan Watts entitled “Become What You Are”, we decided to quit our jobs and chase our passions in the fitness field. We were also spurred by a sense of social responsibility towards our community and a desire to change lifestyles towards more healthy living. We joined the European Institute of Fitness and successfully received qualifications as Master Trainers, Certified Exercise Specialist, Certified Nutrition Coach, Fitness & Motivation Coach, and returned to Bahrain to set up our own business. After a year and half of planning and gaining work experience at other gyms around Bahrain, Mettle Fitness Solutions was established in 2016.

What kind of programs do you have that distinguish your studio from any regular gym?

Our programs are more personal, more private, and more focused. We craft personal training solutions based on individual requirements and aim for long term goals rather than short term gains.

Prevention is the best medicine, so we motivate our clients to maintain a healthy lifestyle by paying attention to a balanced diet, posture correction, and muscle strengthening. Our appointment-based facility focuses on functional training that does not require any cardio machines. Why use a machine to simulate a movement you can do on your own?

How many people are currently working for Mettle Fitness Solutions? Do you have female trainers as well? We started operating in May, so we are currently the only employees at Mettle, and we cover every aspect of the business from training to administration and finance. We are looking to hire a female trainer who shares the same passion, similar qualification and motivation.

Many experts claim that around 60% of a person’s fitness is dictated by their diet. Do you also offer meal plans for your customers?

We always say abs are made in the kitchen. Nutrition is a key element of fitness as it boosts your performance and metabolism, balances the secretion of hormones, and aids in recovery. People who follow meal plans and diets feel the need for a cheat meal and will usually cheat more than commit. That’s why at Mettle we give our clients a food diary to record their meals and then make suggestions based on their individual tastes. For example if a client enjoys spreadable cheese, we will recommend replacing it with labna or feta cheese as a healthier option.

What were some of the initial challenges you faced when setting up your business?

The initial set up was an uphill battle, with so many negative opinions and criticisms floating about as we were brainstorming and refining our ideas. We hit a lot of dead ends when it came to starting up and financing, but each time we just kept looking for a different path until we realised our dream.

Mettle Fitness Solutions, 7th floor, Capital Plus Tower, Seef District

What marketing techniques have you used to reach your target customers? Which techniques seem to be the most effective?

The most effective marketing is word of mouth and the visible changes in our clients. As the benefits of your workouts and new lifestyle kick in, friends, family, and colleagues will notice the obvious changes in your body, performance, choice of food, and time management. These are the strongest proof of what Mettle can do for you, and we guarantee a change in your lifestyle.

Is there any one exercise that you guys swear by?

From where did you guys receive the funding to start this enterprise?

After completing our certification in the UK, we started freelancing at other gyms to establish a name for ourselves and gain experience with different client segments, children’s camps, events, etc. We saved all our income for two years until we had enough money to cover a month’s rent and to buy equipment that would suit everyone and every functional movement.

What advice do you have for any aspiring entrepreneurs out there?

Burpees are a great resistance exercise and cardio exercise at the same time. It involves laying down on your stomach and getting back up quickly. Although this sounds simple it will develop your respiratory system, cardiovascular system, mobility, and move all your muscles at the same time.

There are no right or wrong experiences; everything you go through now will give you the right experience. Don’t work for the money, but work for the passion and if you work hard towards your dream, money will come. If you love what you do, then you do it best and when you do, you will be the best.

A lot of people complain about not having enough time or energy during the day to get any exercise. What do you have to say to them?

What are your future plans for Mettle Fitness Solutions?

Everyone gets exactly the same amount of time as every great person who ever lived. We all get 168 hours in a week. If you spend 40 hours at school or work and 56 sleeping, you still have 72 hours left over. Surely you can find three hours a week to get into shape. If not, you will have to make time for sickness later.

We plan to invest more in the community and motivate and inspire an ever larger segment of clients. Our vision is to educate society about fitness and nutrition to achieve a healthier lifestyle. To find out more about Mettle Fitness Solutions, follow them on Instagram @be.mettle

Get Grubbed! Serial restauranteur rob nakfour On Serving The ultimate Comfort Food 36

january 2017 August 2016

lready the owner of two successful restaurants, The Grub Shack and El Gringo, Rob Nakfour’s business plans show no signs of slowing down. In our interview with him, he talks about his love for comfort food and future plans for expansion. Tell us a little bit about your educational and career background. I was born in Kuwait but essentially raised in Bahrain. After completing my master’s at University College London, I moved back to Bahrain around 2010. I tried starting a couple of ventures with some partners, but nothing really panned out. I finally decided to start a restaurant in 2012.

What inspired you to start a restaurant?

I actually have no formal culinary background at all. I come from a household with great food, and have always just been very picky about what I eat. For someone with a passion for food like me, starting a restaurant just seemed like a natural choice.

Could you tell us a little bit about the concepts behind The Grub Shack and El Gringo?

I opened The Grub Shack in 2012 and El Gringo just last year. At Grubshack, we serve what I consider to be the ultimate comfort food. This includes burgers, steaks and ribs, heavily inspired by American culture and style of cooking. I actually came up with the idea for El Gringo while in the USA doing research for The Grub Shack. It’s a completely different concept, that sells Mexican street food. I even brought in someone to do graffiti art on the walls in El Gringo to give it the authentic feel that I was trying to encapsulate.

El Gringo and The Grub Shack, located in Hamala

“Word of mouth is certainly the most effective form of marketing. We’ve seen from experience that news about really good food travels fast!” What have been you main marketing strategies for these restaurants?

The main platform that we used to market this was Instagram. Initially, someone else handled the Instagram account to get the ball rolling. Once we had enough followers, I took over. Since then, The Grub Shack and El Gringo have also become sponsors for La Liga and have been featured on the advertisement LED screens. However, word of mouth is certainly the most effective form of marketing. We’ve seen from experience that news about really good food travels fast!

From where did you receive the funding for your enterprises?

I received the funding from my father. He helped me out quite a lot with the business initially, so I have a lot to thank him for.

What is the main factor that distinguishes your restaurants from the competition? There are quite a number of factors. I do my best to make sure that the food we serve is of the highest quality possible. For example, The Grub Shack serves the best Angus beef that money can buy. However, I think the most important distinguishing factor is my passion for the food that I serve. I will not serve something that I won’t eat. When researching for The Grub Shack, I spent some time in the USA just trying out different foods in order to learn people’s preferences. It was pretty fun research, I must say!

What were some of the biggest unexpected challenges you faced when starting your businesses?

we had a lot of obstacles thrown at us by the Ministry of Labour for visas. My father had to fight tooth and nail just to get us the visas we needed in order to function at ease. We also faced a number of challenges from our food and machinery suppliers and contractors, who were just not giving us what we needed at a decent price. It was my first business effort, so it was only natural that I would face these issues. Things were definitely a bit easier the second time around, with El Gringo.

What piece of advice would you give to someone hoping to start a restaurant of their own?

I’d tell him or her to focus on the food. I’ve been to a number of restaurants that you could tell people spent a great deal of money on, that served absolute garbage. Conversely, I’ve been to places that look like looked like dumps, where the food was phenomenal. Given the choice, I think most people would choose to eat at the latter.

What are some of your future business plans?

We will soon be opening new branches of The Grub Shack and El Gringo at The Walk in Riffa. We will also soon launch two new concepts at El Mercado in Janabiyah: Choox Chicken Coop and Wang’s, a Chinese restaurant. Hopefully, there will be much more to come! Under The InflUence Harnessing THe Power of influencer MarkeTing The other day when heading out for lunch, I decided I needed a change from my favourite go-to restaurant and tried out a new place. As I was eating, I realised something: I made the switch because of unofficial influencer marketing tactics. My friend had been talking about this new restaurant during our latest meeting, and that recommendation triggered my subsequent purchase. I made a mental note to try this restaurant, and I followed through. By Eman Bu-Rashid

In a world where marketing is becoming more and more personalised, the rise of influencer marketing isn’t surprising. Before we dive further into more details about this particular type of marketing and how it works, let’s first look at the definition of the “Influencer Marketing”.

What is Influencer Marketing?

An influencer is someone who has an active following and can move their followers to take action. They are people who are active on social media and blogs. They are

38

january 2017

also brand advocates and niche promoters. Influencer marketing involves connecting with these thought leaders to build a mutually beneficial relationship. a study published in the McKinsey&Company quarterly demonstrates that: • 20-50% of all purchasing decisions are influenced by word-of-mouth. • Influencer opinions are more than twice as effective as regular paid marketing. • Customers acquired through influencers and word-of-mouth are 37% more likely to stick around.

Benefits of Influencer Marketing Here are some of the main reasons why you should have an influencer marketing strategy:

1. Best advertising channel

As social media usage continues to accelerate and platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and YouTube play increasingly larger roles in how people spend their time, communicate, consume information, and make decisions, influencer marketing is not only the fastest growing, but also the best advertising channel for businesses.

2. Better customers and increase your reach

With the help of influencers, you can build an audience that has a high tendency to appreciate your product or service. If the influencer’s opinion comes across as genuine, there’s a huge chance they’re going to genuinely become fans of your product. This means that they’re going to spread the word among their own followers. In the past, most people would use advertisements they saw on television or print media to make decisions about their purchasing. Today, it’s much easier to learn what other people just like yourself think about a particular company’s product or service. Businesses can identify key personalities who can help them further their message. Influencer marketing, at its core, involves working with these personalities to create promotional campaigns which are personalised and come across as authentic. Who are you more likely to trust – a company that wants to sell you a product through advertising, or an individual who is offering their opinion as a customer? Think about it! With the rise of social media platforms as an avenue to influence consumer purchasing decisions, in recent years, influencer marketing has become a trending topic that is rapidly gaining momentum, particularly in the Gulf region.

Types of Influencers:

3. Building trust with your audience

People trust recommendations coming from friends, family, or even celebrities or influencers. So building a relationship with your audience through influencers could be an effective way to earn their trust. When consumers trust your brand, they’re more likely to make a purchase and choose you over your competitors.

4. Improving customer retention and loyalty

When you build a relationship with your audience, there’s a good chance they’re going to come back to you and continue doing business with you. So you can make the most of influencers to build that relationship and retain more customers in the long run.

5. Use generated content

The content that is generated by the influencer on one platform provides great content to be shared on all of your other business social platforms, including your website.

It’s important to monitor the different types of online influencers in order to make the most of opportunities to find the right fit for your business. We have shortlisted four types of influencers that are most popular in the Gulf region:

So what are the traits of a good influencer?

- Popular YouTubers

1. They are Trustworthy. They are a trusted source of information with original thoughts and aren’t just retweeting stuff other people say.

- Bloggers - Famous people and celebrities - Social media experts

Who are you more likely to trust – a company that Wants to sell you a product through advertising, or an individual Who is offering their opinion as a customer? think about it! 40

january 2017

2. They Are a Thought Leader. An influencer is typically interested in just one main topic. They have a loyal following of readers. They actually interact and react to the interests of their audience. 3. Their words Have Impact. They can often impact other influencers and buyers in a given space because of their knowledge and passion about the topic. 4. They Are Engaging. They regularly interact and engage with their followers. Engaging in real-time is extremely important these days. 5. They Go To Their audience. They use the same tools (usually Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram) as your audience.

How to engage an influencer

Here are the steps you should bear in mind when engaging with an influencer:

Determine KPIs, Budget, Audience Target, etc.

The first step in developing an influencer marketing strategy is to align the strategy with your business goals. In essence, you will need to determine if the objective is to raise brand awareness, generate leads and sales and/or increase customer loyalty. The second step is setting a budget, identifying the target audience, and establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) that will determine campaign success. Typical KPIs include audience reach, impressions, views, engagement rates, the number of screenshots taken (for Snapchat campaigns), increase in followers, and sales, among other goals.

Determine Social Media Channels of Influencers

To ensure campaigns are successful, you should determine which social media platforms best represent the audience you are targeting and can achieve the goals of the campaign. Because different platforms are used/favoured by different demographics, leveraging the right social platform is critical for targeting a particular group of customers. Different platforms also allow for different types of audience engagement, so utilising the platform that will lead to the desired engagement is vital to campaign success. Therefore it is important to have a better understanding of how the chosen influencer is engaging with their audience to help you develop a more effective and engaging content strategy.

Negotiate Rates and Contracts

Prior to launching an influencer marketing campaign, businesses and influencers should negotiate rates and sign a legal document stipulating compensation, campaign deliverables (regarding all aspects of influencer-created content), publishing schedule, and licensing rights for any content created through the campaign. Influencers will often have “rate card” quotes for sponsorships on their channels.

Review Content

To ensure each piece of the influencer content fulfils campaign requirements – touches on predetermined copy points, aligns with brand messaging, meets the guidelines set at the beginning, etc. – you must always review and approve posts, photos, and/ or videos before they are published. You should set a reasonable schedule for delivery to allow time for review and changes the influencer need to make, if necessary.

Publish

Once you have reviewed and approved the campaign, the social media influencer may proceed with publishing content to their social media channels. During this time, you should monitor the campaign for accuracy, note all social engagement, and document the campaign.

Amplify and Optimise

Determine Publishing Schedule

For campaigns to achieve maximum effectiveness, publishing schedules must coordinate across all social platforms and align with key dates and corresponding marketing initiatives.

Promoting campaign, both immediately after they launch and beforehand, can amplify influencer marketing efforts to larger audiences. You may choose to optimise the campaign be asking influencers to promote campaigns on their own social media channels, strengthening the Call To Action (CTA) within the content, and publishing additional social media content to boost campaign exposure.

Evaluate Influencers

Report & Analyse

First, you need to determine how the influencer is connected to their audience, then determine which influencer best matches the goals of the campaign. You should look at key criteria when reviewing influencers for a campaign. Primarily, the influencer’s voice must align with your brand messaging to ensure that the message feels authentic and resonates with the influencer’s audience. You should also review an influencer’s engagement across all social platforms to determine audience loyalty. If you can, you need to assess the influencer’s past campaigns to help determine the success of your campaign.

You should gather all metrics, including reach, views, impressions, and engagement to review for a campaign report. Recording and taking screenshots of social engagement (messages, comments, etc.) is an important indication of audience sentiment and response to the campaign. Comparing engagement metrics (likes, comments, etc.) against past videos and/or social posts by influencer can also help determine the success of the campaign, and reviewing results against pre-campaign KPIs and/ or other similar marketing initiatives can inform future marketing strategies, budget allocation, and influencer selection.

Prepare Campaign Brief

Last Note.

To best facilitate the creative process, you should prepare a brief of the campaign, including campaign requirements, talking points, creative guidance, and goals. Allowing the influencer to be part of the creative process will help them create authentic branded content that is most likely to perform well with their audience. Any content that feels too branded, too scripted, or isn’t true to what an influencer would actually say will fall flat with its audience, or worse, will draw negative feedback.

Bear in mind that one size does not fit all. One particular influencer may only influence a certain segment of your audience, so choose your influencer well. Currently influencer marketing is so cost-effective that businesses can try different influencers, gather analytics, and become more sophisticated buyers. At the same time, influencers are becoming savvy at figuring out the best way to engage with their audience. There has never been a better time to get started.

Switzerland, New Zealand, Russia, Nigeria, Georgia, and Sudan. I have been in Bahrain for four and a half years now.

Could you describe what a typical work week is like for you?

A typical work week for me involves daily meetings and briefings with the various department heads to ensure the smooth running of operations. We are committed to taking care of our guests and ensuring that all their requirements are met. Furthermore, we’re always thinking about ways to create unique memories wherever possible.

What measures have you taken to distinguish the K hotel from other luxury hotels in the kingdom?

K Hotel is the only one in Bahrain to achieve the ISO certification in five areas: Quality Management System ISO 9001:2008; Environmental Management System ISO 14001:2004; Occupational Health & Safety Management System OHSAS 18001:2007; Food Safety Management System ISO 22000:2005 as well as HACCP. Frank eikeland

Combining comfort and luxury in a seamless blend, the Domain Hotel and Spa is one of the country’s most popular choices among corporate business travellers and holiday-makers alike. The hotel’s recent partnership with Preferred Hotels & Resorts is certainly a testament to their outstanding quality of service. General manager Frank Normann Eikeland tells us more. what inspired you to join the hospitality industry? Could you give us a brief overview of your career until now? My first connection with hospitality was as a bell boy at my uncle’s hotel in Norway. I went on to progress as a trainee waiter, and eventually left to gain a formal education in hotel management. Over the following years, I worked at a number of hotels around Norway before finally being appointed general manager in 2004 – a major turning point in my career. Since then, I have held the position at a number of properties in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE and now in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Could you describe what a typical work week is like for you?

My working days are divided between guest contact and relations, to the staff and hotel operations. Guest interaction is a crucial aspect to working in hospitality; it is important to hear and take on customer feedback in order to ensure that we provide them with a five-star experience. For my staff, I want to ensure that they are coached and motivated to the highest level. Together with my executive committee, we implement a strategic approach with a commercial focus. We evaluate and measure market trends, to make sure our service and quality delivery is consistent and maintained at the five-star standards.

48

JANUARY 2017

what are the most challenging issues you face in your current position?

Hotels in Bahrain are very dependent on weekend traffic from Saudi Arabia. Over the last quarter, occupancy throughout the island’s hotels has dropped due to the slower traffic from KSA. In addition, other feeders for mid-week occupancy which include corporate travellers involved with construction projects, business conferences and events have reduced as well. Further to these challenges, we are faced with increased competition from the planned development of new hotels, luxury apartments and malls over the next few years. Nevertheless, with our strategic approach in place for 2017 and 2018 and our great team at The Domain Hotel and Spa, we are prepared to tackle these challenges head on.

How do you oversee the training of hotel staff?

Under my influence, supervision and regular monitoring, our Human Resources department has a thorough introduction program for all new employees. The program ensures that full product knowledge and necessary level of training is reached by the time they are in service.

In the eyes of your employees, what is the single most important quality you should have?

Passion is vital. To succeed in this business, you have to be passionate about what you do and what you believe in. It comes from the heart and soul, and passion does not care for money or material goods. I am proud to have a great team who have based their careers on their passion. It is not only for employees to see and feel the passion, but also our guests.

what do you love most about working in the hospitality industry?

The hospitality business is all about people and a lot of common sense. I am a good coach; I coach my entire team, from line staff to senior management to the best of my ability. I am fortunate that this is what I am able to do in this industry. If you have a happy team, this is reflected to the guests and it becomes the perfect symbiosis. Happy staff and happy guests will return commercial benefits to the hotel.

outside of work, what are some of your main hobbies and interests?

I am a Norwegian national. For six months of the year, my home country is dark and cold; then for the remaining six months, we bathe in the warmth and sun. Naturally, I love the sun, so on my days off, you will find me on a beach somewhere enjoying the sun and sea. In addition to the outdoor life, I find my fun by spending quality time with friends, either for a private dinner, going to the cinema or attending and experiencing cultural performances.

what advice do you have for any young professionals hoping to enter the industry? Be passionate about what you do and you will succeed! It is very simple. If you love what you do, you will make it.

what new developments at the Domain Hotel and Spa can we expect to see during 2017?

We will be expanding our operations to other locations in Bahrain. We are working with other high-end brands that share the same vision and read from the same page. We are proud to say that we have started a number of these strategic partnerships, and the outlook is promising. We have been planning new concepts to be launched in the first quarter of 2017, and we aim to be one of the premier food and beverage destinations in Bahrain.

Driven By innovation Interview with Westin & Le Meridien General Manager, Anna-Marie Dowling

Working her way up from being a chambermaid in London to the general manager of two luxury hotels in the Middle East, Anna-Marie Dowling has enjoyed a phenomenal rise to the top. She is currently the general manager of the Le Meridien and Westin hotels situated at City Centre Bahrain. In a tell-all interview with BIG, she shares her story as well as some of her future plans for the hotels. How did you enter the hospitality industry?

At school, I wasn’t what you might call “academically gifted”. I think I spent more time talking and less time listening! I thus left school with mediocre results. I began working as a waitress while studying for my GCE A Level exams. During that time, I’d made a decision to enter catering college and make a career for myself in hospitality. My parents were initially horrified with my decision, but eventually came around. After completing my exams, I began my career at the Holiday Inn in Slough/Windsor, on the outskirts of London. I spent the first nine months of my time there cleaning rooms, before eventually getting on their in-house trainee program. The next two and a half years were spent working on the ground floor in every department, learning my craft from the ground floor up.

How long have you been working in your current role at the Westin and Le Meridien at City Centre, and what inspired your decision to move to the Middle East? Prior to moving to Bahrain, I’d spent my entire professional career in Great Britain, but I’d always wanted to get some international working experience but for one reason or another I never seemed to make this happen for myself. In June 2015 I finally decided I needed to fulfill this ambition so I took a number of steps towards making it happen and the opportunity in Bahrain arose, so I now have been working here since the beginning of 2016.

Could you describe what a typical work week is like for you?

One thing I love about this job is that no two days are ever the same. That being said, the word that best describes my typical work week is ‘frenetic’! A typical week can be varied, with a

cross-section of duties and responsibilities. On the one hand, we have our daily morning meetings, where we look at what we’re going to be doing for the next 24 hours in the hotel. On the other, I strategically look at our hotel’s business plans for the next 6 months. My days are made up of a combination of dealing with the direct reports, to attending functional meetings with the finance, revenue, sales or marketing departments and of course focusing on our guests a well.

What measures have you taken to distinguish The Westin and Le Meridien from other luxury hotels in the kingdom?

The biggest obvious distinction with these two hotels is that they are connected to a mall, which gives us a very unique selling point. Other than that, the Westin and Le Meridien are two well-defined international hotel brands that many travelers are already familiar with.

What are the most challenging issues you face in your current position?

The biggest challenge that we’re facing at the moment is our market. We’re very reliant on the market from Saudi Arabia, whose disposable income is closely linked with the buoyancy of the oil and gas market. Unfortunately this continues to face challenges which mean that people are less likely to travel and spend. Another challenge is being in a tough market place with the increased number of competitor hotels coming into Bahrain, as one of our key measurements is how we perform against competitor hotels.

How do you oversee the training of hotel staff?

Large part of this is overseen by our training manager. There is always some sort of training taking place at the hotels, whether it’s first-aid training, brand training, operational training etc. We also have an onboarding program for new staff. We’re quite lucky now that, with the development of technology, we’re able to do a lot more of the training online, which makes us more efficient. Lastly, we have a lot of on-the-job training as well, whilst I do not personally oversee the training of every member of staff, I do my best to make sure training plans are being properly executed and tracked.

What advice do you have for any young professionals hoping to enter the hospitality industry? I think the hospitality industry offers fantastic opportunities for anyone who doesn’t want to follow the traditional paths of studying for a degree or getting an MBA – not that there’s anything wrong with that. A great thing about this industry is that your destiny truly rests in your hands, with plenty of opportunities available for people with different interests or skillsets. However, you’ve got to be resilient and determined if you want to get to the top of the ladder. You need to be self-motivated and prepared to work hard as you will constantly be challenged, whether by your fellow colleagues, guests or by circumstance.

What new developments at the Westin and Le Meridien can we expect to see in the near future?

These hotels are important assets to our owners, the Majid Al Futtaim Group, who are always keen to develop them further. We plan to renovate all the rooms at the Westin in 2017, We will also be completely renovating the mezzanine in either 2017 or 2018, and the spa at the Westin in 2018. Furthermore, we will continue to evolve and develop our food and beverage concepts at both hotels. JANUARY 2017

Luxury In EvEry DEtaIL Our Exclusive With Ritz-Carlton Bahrain General Manager, Christian Zandonella

S

ituated on the country’s north coast, the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain is part of one the world’s best-known luxury hotel chains. This month, BIG had the opportunity to speak with Italian native and general manager of the property, Mr. Christian Zandonella. In an exclusive interview, we find out more about the latest developments taking place at the beachfront hotel. What inspired you to join the hospitality industry? Could you give us a brief overview of your career until now?

You could say I was born into this field, as my parents worked in hospitality – they ran an ice cream shop in Germany. Working in major capital cities such as Berlin, New York and Barcelona, and then combining that experience with stints at resort locations such as Majorca and Cancun has prepared me very well for this property. In Bahrain, we deal with a lot of corporate business travellers while maintaining a strong focus on leisure as well.

How would you describe a typical work week?

There’s no typical work week, really. Some can be much busier than others. If we’re hosting a high-profile wedding reception, for example, we could be completely swamped for weeks leading up to the event. 52

JANUARY 2017

What measures have you taken to distinguish The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain from other luxury hotels in the kingdom? Here at The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain, we are very restaurant and lifestyle-oriented. Last year, we organised a fantastic partnership with Oliver Glowig, a two Michelin star chef based in Rome, at Primavera restaurant. We also have a great chef of our own, Yann Bernard Lejard, who is very dear to us. Furthermore, we recently opened the Mexican restaurant Cantina Kahlo, which has proven to be a huge success so far. To run the restaurant, we flew in a number of ‘ladies and gentlemen’, as we like to refer to our staff, from other Ritz-Carlton properties in Cancun and Florida.

What are the most challenging issues you face in your current position?

Our biggest challenge is finding the right people to join our team. At the Ritz-Carlton, we take great pride in the quality of our service, and invest heavily in the training of our staff. Thus, we spend a great deal of time selecting the most suitable candidate for a particular job.

In the eyes of your employees, what is the single most important quality you should have? As the general manager, I need to be able to guarantee the success of the property. That sense of accountability is crucial for any manager. While being able to listen and being approachable are also necessary traits, I try to work with my team to constantly innovate and improve wherever possible. An example of this is the recent launch of our new ‘brand voice’.

What do you love most about working in the hospitality industry?

I love working with people. I think it’s important to maintain personal relationships in today’s digital era. Here at The Ritz-Carlton, we follow a similar mindset in order to cater to our clients needs to the best of our ability.

Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies and interests?

In my time off, I like to learn as much about the country that I am living in. Whether it’s spending a time at the museum or exploring new places during one of my runs, I enjoy learning about the place and immersing myself in the local culture.

What advice do you have for any young professionals hoping to enter the industry?

The single biggest piece of advice I would give to any young professional entering this field is to maintain their curiosity. Whether you want want to make a career for yourself as a doorman or a chef, your success will ultimately be defined by your sense of curiosity. As long as you can maintain an interest in what is happening around the hotel, in your fellow colleagues, and in your chosen profession, you will continue to grow.

What new developments at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain can we expect to see during 2017?

We just recently opened our new restaurant, Cantina Kahlo, and will soon be launching our “Ritz kids” educational program for young guests. A growing market for us lately has been high-profile weddings, especially from Saudi Arabia; that will definitely be another area of interest for next year. Other than these developments, we will focus our efforts towards continuously improving the quality of our existing services.

Customer Is King Three Ways You Can Improve Your Customer Service By Mike Wood,

Founder of Legalmorning.com

Customer service sucks. In fact, I believe that the term “customer service” is an oxymoron. Out of all the experiences I have with companies, I dread when I have to contact customer services as I know it will be a nightmare. But, it shouldn’t have to be that way. Given that the customer service industry is being overrun by social media and online review websites, some companies simply cannot keep up. Others are under the false impression that their customer service is so good they don’t need to change. Many companies see customer service as a necessary evil when it fact it needs to be a staple of their businesses. “Customer service is often a direct view into the heart of a company,” says Dan Doran, CVA and founder of Quantive Valuations. “Clients that feel loved often translate into a loyal following of brand evangelists. Done right, that following can correlate back to increased revenues and an improving bottom line. Of course, done wrong, a bad customer experience can have a massive negative impact.” While I am not an expert on customer service, I will tell you I have dealt with enough businesses to give you my opinion. Here are a few ideas which companies can use today to help break the surface tension of what customer service really is:

1. Listen. Listen. Listen

Most people just want to be heard. When you fail to let someone finish telling you a complaint, it appears that you don’t really care about the issue. When it comes to dealing with complaints, please take the time to listen to the concern. A few months ago, I contacted a restaurant after I noticed a charge on my credit card that I didn’t authorise. Long story short, I was able to figure out the waiter had likely swiped my card for another table inadvertently. No biggie with me, I just wanted to make sure it was taken care of. When I called the restaurant, I didn’t even finish telling the manager what I thought had happened when he cut me off and stated that he would offer me a free meal.

54

JANUARY 2017

I didn’t want a free meal, I just wanted him to listen to the issue and take care of it. I wasn’t mad when I called as I know people make mistakes. However, I was mad by the time I hung up because I had to wait for the manager to finish cutting me off before I could resume telling the story. Even if you have heard the same complaint millions of times, each person should be allowed to tell it. Doing so helps them vent some of their anger and will give you an opportunity to start displacing that anger with possible solutions.

2. Tell the Truth, Even if It’s Bad

Stop lying to me. I don’t really want excuses; I just want the truth. If you make a mistake, that is perfectly normal and I understand you are human. But, when you try to introduce excuses, then you lose credibility with everything else you are going to say. As an entrepreneur, you need to have high ethical standards, and this needs to translate into your customer service department. “The biggest reason why you shouldn’t lie to your customers is because there’s no reason to do so,” writes Alexandra Harris in an article on customer service. “So what if your product doesn’t do everything they want? So what if you can’t change a customer’s monthly price? Do you think your customers would rather hear a lie than the truth? Definitely not.” Believe it or not, customers can handle the truth. Lying will only compound an issue. It shows that you really don’t care there was an issue in the first place, you have no integrity to address the issue, and that you really don’t want that customer’s business ever again.

3. Say You’re Sorry

You don’t need to give away free products or services to keep your customers happy. Many times, a simple “sorry” will do the trick. People need to feel that their complaint is valid, and sometimes a simple word is the best way to do it. For me as a customer, telling me you’re sorry calms my initial anger of why I am complaining in the first place. Finally, don’t just say it to say it. If you are not sincere, customers will know it and get even more upset.

Final Thoughts on Customer Service

I know this article sounds like my opportunity to vent about previous bad experiences. Well, in a way it is, but in addition it can be used as a heads-up for companies wanting to improve customer service. Old ways of keeping customers happy are no longer working. You need to engage your customers, listen to what they say, and apologise when it is necessary.

“As an entrepreneur, you need to have high ethical standards, and this needs to translate into your customer service department.” Mike Wood is an online marketer, author and Wikipedia expert. business with Capital Club Bahrain General Manager, Sumeet Jhingan

With nearly two decades’ experience working at some of the finest hotels in the world, Sumeet Jhingan is certainly well-qualified to head the prestigious and exclusive institution that is the Capital Club Bahrain. We have a chat with the club’s dynamic new general manager, who tells us a little more about his plans for the country’s premier private business and social club.

Could you give us a brief overview of your career in the hospitality industry?

I’ve been working in the hospitality sector for over 18 years now, starting my career in Melbourne, Australia. Over the years, I’ve worked at a number of five-star hotels and luxury properties in the USA, Australia and the Middle East. During that time, I’ve also had the pleasure of collaborating with a number of Michelin Star chefs such as Jean Georges Vongerichten, Jaime Pesaque, Shaun Hergatt and Laurent Tourondel. I moved to Bahrain five months ago to fill my current role as general manager of the country’s Capital Club.

How many such Clubs are there around the world? Are members able to have access to the club’s premises?

Capital Club Bahrain is managed by Signature Clubs International. Members can access our sister clubs in Dubai and Lagos, Nigeria, with an affiliation of 250 International Associated Clubs worldwide plus a variety of independent reciprocal clubs too.

We’ve have heard that the Capital Club Bahrain is known to be the best amongst its sister clubs. How far is this true? If so, why? Thank you for the compliment! Every venue is unique in its own perspective but the support of our valuable members coupled with its location, brilliant team members and local touch of hospitality makes the Capital Club Bahrain quite special.

As a business club, our core focus will be on connecting businesses from across GCC. We have clear plans and goals outlined for 2017 – to increase our number of members across the eastern region of KSA, focus on female entrepreneurs and young leaders, add more value for our existing members, and ensure higher member retention. We will also be adding a new spin to our culinary experience by collaborating with various Michelin Star & celebrity chefs.

How does Capital Club work with organisations in the country for the training of young professionals in the hospitality sector?

Our aim is to have more Bahraini colleagues as part of our team next year. We have signed up with the Bahrain Institute of Hospitality and Retail (BIHR), offering an opportunity for their Bahraini students to be trained at the Capital Club Bahrain. Selected students will have the pleasure to travel abroad and work with Michelin Star chefs for further experience under the sponsorship of the Club.

What would you say are some of the most challenging issues you face on a regular basis?

Believe it or not, but one of the biggest challenges we face is dealing with the dress code – members usually adhere to the dress code policy but sometimes their guests don’t. This can cause a bit of friction at times as we do not normally make exceptions.

What do you love most about working in the hospitality industry?

I love to meet new people, whether they are guests or new recruits from various backgrounds. I love working in this industry because no two days are the same; you get challenged in many ways and are always kept on your toes. The hospitality industry has afforded me the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. Travelling and exploring various cultures, cuisines and countries has certainly made for an amazing journey thus far.

Outside of work, what are some of your main hobbies and interests?

I love to read and stay healthy by playing outdoor sports. I’m also a big fan of progressive music, trying new restaurants, travelling, and collecting antique watches.

What advice do you have for any young professionals hoping to enter the hospitality sector?

Passion, patience and determination are crucial in order to have a successful career in the hospitality industry, as this isn’t a nine to six kind of job. Don’t get into this if you are looking for short-term gain or money. Make sure you find a suitable mentor, and don’t shy away from taking on new challenges.

What new developments or special events can we expect to see at the Capital Club Bahrain during 2017?

We have plans laid out for every quarter of next year. Among them, we want to bring a number of celebrity chefs and international business speakers. I envision that the Capital Club Bahrain will soon become an icon of the Kingdom’s social scene, with service excellence and member satisfaction as our primary focus areas. From Hype

to reality The Security Element of the Internet Of Things By Scott ManSon

We’re now experiencing a new wave of technology that’s being defined by connected devices everywhere. It’s all a part of the Internet of Things (IoT). These connected devices are impacting our lives on a daily basis, changing everything from the way we provide healthcare to cooling our homes to running our manufacturing facilities and other critical infrastructure. Today there are 10 billion connected devices but that number is expected to grow exponentially – exceeding 50 billion sensors, objects, and other connected “things” by the year 2020. 62

JANUARY 2017

e

ach of these devices could either be an asset you want to protect and enable, or a threat vector. The ultimate goal of IoT is to increase operational efficiency, power new business models, and improve quality of life. By connecting everyday objects and networking them together, we benefit from their ability to combine simple data to produce usable intelligence. To capitalise on the vast opportunities that the IoT brings doesn’t just require networked connections but secure networked connections. Cybersecurity is not just a top consideration with the IoT, but one that is foundational to delivering on the promise of the vision. Protecting all of the interactions of the IoT is crucial in enabling people and organisations to benefit from these advances. In today’s world of IoT, cybersecurity needs to be top of mind as the number and type of attack vectors will continue to increase, as will the amount of data. This will create a daunting challenge for companies and those responsible to defend the infrastructure. No longer is it a matter of if attacks will happen, but when. Incentives for attackers are extremely large, and all organisations need to understand how these attackers pursue valuable data.

WhaT’S NEEDED

iot CyberseCurity CHallenges

What’s needed is a new, threat-centric and operational approach that is as pervasive as the IoT and the threats themselves. This new approach must span a range of attack vectors and address the full attack continuum – before, during, and after an attack. With this model, we can protect computer systems, networks, and data. I believe that the right approach for IoT cybersecurity should deliver on three key imperatives – visibility-driven, threat-focused, and platform-based. Here are my reasons why:

The IoT is exponentially increasing the number and type of attack vectors, creating many new and unforeseen challenges for organisations and those responsible for defending the infrastructure. Some of these challenges include:

• Increased attack surface. With billions of new

devices now connected to the IoT and more devices connecting all the time, the ability to gain visibility into these attack vectors is increasingly difficult.

• Threat diversity. Due to the variety of objects

adversaries can target, attackers are able to devise new methods we have yet to face and blend sophisticated techniques to accomplish their missions.

• Threat sophistication. Threats have already

become stealthier, evading initial point-in-time detections and using nearly imperceptible indicators of compromise to reach their target. Cybersecurity systems that rely exclusively on point-in-time defences and techniques can’t keep up with unfolding attacks.

• Differentiated Enforcement and Remediation. IT and OT networks are managed with different priorities in mind. Cybersecurity policies that are intended for one environment often do not translate well to the other. This presents serious tradeoffs between protection and continuity of operations.

• Complexity & Fragmentation. Networks and

their components constantly evolve and spawn new attack vectors. These include mobile devices, webenabled and mobile applications, hypervisors, social media, web browsers, and home computers. This makes cybersecurity a complex problem to address. The inherent diversity of IoT networks further expands this to new device types.

• Shortage of skilled resources. Adding to these

challenges is the lack of in-house technology skills necessary to maintain a strong security posture to keep up with rapidly developing and evolving threats. For 2016, the world-wide shortage of security professionals is estimated at more than a million, increasing to 1.5 million by 2019 which indicates how much demand there is for security talent. Since the demand is greater than the supply, many organisations struggle to attract and retain security professionals and, consequently, this further constrains security teams.

What’s needed is a new, threatcentric and operational approach that is as pervasive as the IoT and the threats themselves.

Visibility-Driven: We must be able to accurately see what is happening in the environment in realtime to gain knowledge about the environment and threats. Visibility needs to come from the network fabric, endpoints, mobile devices, applications, virtual environments and the cloud. A real-time, accurate picture of devices, data and the relationships between them is crucial to making sense of billions of devices, applications, and their associated information. Threat-Focused: We need to presume compromise and hone our ability to identify threats based on understanding normal and abnormal behaviour, identify indicators of compromise, make decisions and respond rapidly. Policies and controls are important to reducing the surface area of attack, but threats still get through. We need to focus on detecting, understanding and stopping threats. With advanced malware and zero day attacks, this is an ongoing process that requires continuous analysis and real-time cybersecurity intelligence, delivered from the cloud, that is shared across all technologies for improved efficacy. Platform-Based: In this new IoT environment, security is now more than a network issue; it requires an integrated system of agile and open platforms that cover the network, devices and the cloud. These platforms need to be extensible, built for scale and centralised management for unified policy and consistent controls. We need to move from deploying simple point cybersecurity appliances to integrating a true platform of scalable, easy to deploy services and applications. The promise of the IoT can only be fully realised when fears about the very real security implications are assuaged. Organisations across an array of industries are embracing IoT, each with unique needs and requirements. There is no “one size fits all” approach to cybersecurity. However, with a comprehensive approach to security, organisations are free to capitalise on the IoT to improve business, government, and safety in extraordinary ways.

To start, we had a selection of Lamb Hawawshi, miniature lamb parcels in pita bread with an authentic taste of Bahraini spices, a thick and rustic tomato and basil soup, and a refreshing twist on the classic fattoush salad which featured fresh smoked salmon. This was followed by Shrimp Falafel, coated in a light mixture of chickpeas and green peas and accompanied by a delicious spicy lebnah.

What inspired you to become a chef, and where did you receive your training?

restaurant was certainly a memorable one. This was in Miami, USA, in 2007. However, as I was only about 25 years old at the time, I felt that I still had a lot to learn, and challenged myself to become better. So, I joined the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne in Miami as a Commis 3 chef, working my way back up to a head chef position 3 years later.

I’ve always had a passion for travelling and learning about new cultures. I find it amazing how food impacts the travel experience of people. I grew up in Uruguay and studied at a culinary institute there for two years. I later moved to Argentina to complete my formal education in the field at the renowned Instituto Argentino de Gastronomia (IAG).

On popular television shows such as Hell’s Kitchen, a professional kitchen seems like a very hostile environment for a young chef. How accurate is this portrayal?

How long have you been cooking professionally? Could you give us a brief overview of your career leading up to now?

In the past, that kind of atmosphere was very normal. But if you had enough passion for the job, you would learn to deal with it. However, there’s been a transformation in the kitchen over the last 10 years. There’s been a shift in mentality, where people now expect to be treated with more respect. Today, there isn’t nearly as much screaming and shouting as you might see on television. Most of that is just theatrics!

I’ve been cooking professionally for around 13 years now. Over the years, I’ve worked at restaurants in Argentina, Spain, Italy and USA before moving to Bahrain around 3 months ago.

Is there a secret behind running a successful restaurant?

I think the most important factor for a successful restaurant is the level of commitment shown by its team. And as the head chef, you must be able to constantly motivate and inspire the people around you to achieve the desired goal. However, it is important to lead by example and show them that you are still a part of the team, and not their boss.

Here at Cantina Kahlo, do you have a ‘signature’ or favourite dish that you enjoy cooking?

We have two signature dishes here at Cantina Kahlo. One is the Huachinango a la Veracruzana which is sea bass with the traditional Mexican Veracruzana sauce. The second is the Costilla de res Braseadas which is wagyu beef short ribs with mole de olla sauce and black beans. We prepare it a little differently here to make it more presentable, but all the flavours remain authentically Mexican.

Do you have a favourite ingredient?

At Cantina Kahlo, and actually one of my all-time favourite ingredients is the guajillo chile pepper, a very popular Mexican spice. With it, you can make oil or powder which can be used to completely change the flavour of a dish.

As a chef, what has your most memorable career moment been? My first experience as head chef of a

Is there another chef that you most admire? Some the dishof served aes Cantina t Kahlo

I’ve worked with a number of amazing chefs during the course of my career, so it’s tough to choose just one! I would say Takehiro Ohno, Paolo Mazzei, and the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain’s very own Yann Bernard Lejard are among some of the greats that I’ve worked with.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to become a chef?

The most important thing you need to succeed in this career is a passion for what you do. Don’t focus on the money; it’s important but it’s not everything. If you’re going to spend half your waking hours in the kitchen, you’d best make sure that cooking is something you genuinely enjoy.

Is there anything else planned for Cantina Kahlo in the near future? Any other thoughts you would like to share?

We’ve only recently opened, so our current focus is on consistency, and getting to know our market. We’re still experimenting with some of our specials to get a clear indication of our guests’ likes and dislikes. Once we have this, we will be making a number of changes to the menu. You can also sense when an organisation is struggling to find its way forward; you sense that no one seems to care. By Mike OrlOv

shared vision

Your people need to believe in the possibility of a future first and foremost for themselves. This means that the organisation has to have an explicit vision which is believable. This will prevent employees from giving up and will stimulate their hopes and dreams for themselves and their families, attached to success in their jobs, careers and work. True engagement at work rests on your employees choosing freely to believe in, and work towards this vision, within the boundaries of your organisation’s value systems. You need to help your people find meaning for themselves in driving to achieve the organisation’s vision; what it means to them. When their personal future is aligned with the future of the enterprise, this meaningfulness drives engagement. You will then retain talent because talented people want to have meaning in their work. Keeping your best people with you, ensuring they are engaged and ensuring you empower them, will undoubtedly add to the possibility of success in this uncertain world.

70

JANUARY 2017

Through engaging people by sharing vision, ensuring they can see the value in being part of the work to achieve this vision, you will also begin to unlock employees’ taking control of their own future. If you do not micro-manage your people, if you encourage them to think for themselves and praise their initiatives then you will see your employees take responsibility for their own actions.

Loosen the reigns

You will experience people suggesting they ought to be accountable for jobs so if things go wrong, they tackle the problems. You will notice they accept their need to sort things out. Your employees will take ownership for their part of the work needed to fulfil the vision for the enterprise because it fits with their own vision for their own future. People’s daily work however is more often than not dragged into problem-solving rather than a proactive positive journey and this can destroy employee engagement. When we all enjoy what we are doing, groups of people working together towards a shared, agreed common goal doing a good job and enjoying the company of colleagues, customers and suppliers, then work can be fun. You cannot however pursue happiness; happiness is a result of good leadership, management and agreed goals and objectives with enough of the right resources to achieve these goals and objectives.

you need to help your people find meaning for themselves Foster in driving to creativity achieve the organisation's vision.

If employees are clear on how working towards the enterprise’s vision will be of value for them personally, then they will put pressure on themselves. If you allow people space to do their work and face challenges, they will be more self-motivated and show you they know what needs to be done.

Research suggests that we are most engaged when we are stretching ourselves to achieve or acquire something new. Look for ways to be creative and stretch yourself and your people to carry out mundane tasks differently. Seek to connect the dots of work to the larger vision. And if the task itself cannot be approached differently, find an opportunity to engage your people in learning activities beforehand. Facing challenges, handling unforeseen uncertainties, allows employees to create new ways of making their work more meaningful. You will have to accept the chance of failure and your employees will have to be encouraged to try new ideas. Not many employees are guided to think this way because mistakes almost always lead to a discipline situation. Different people react differently to these stresses. Some will thrive, others will give up. You will also find some people who crumble and fall into negative feelings and behaviours. Your job is knowing who will react well to challenges, who will accept the possibilities of failure and still come through with positive and innovative approaches.

When innovation is not stimulated and dies, then eventually so does the enterprise. You need to be asking yourself and, more importantly, asking your people: What do our systems and processes tell us about our business? Is it changing, is it adapting, is it exciting and growing? What needs addressing? Employees are engaged when they ascribe ultimate meaning in the work they do and they can see benefit for their own future over and above monthly remuneration, commissions and annual bonus. Your work is to create meaningfulness for your employees, be it the General Manager of a remote location or the most junior person in the enterprise.

Could you tell us a little bit about your educational background?

I obtained a bachelor’s degree in management information systems and an MBA from University College of Bahrain.

How did your career with Junaid Perfumes begin?

Technically speaking, I’ve been working at Junaid Perfumes ever since I was a kid. From the time I can remember, my brothers and I would spend every holiday working with our father – whether it was learning about perfume production or formulas to just cleaning windows. I was put in charge of running one of our outlets at the age of fifteen, and continued working for the business while studying for my degrees.

Could you briefly describe your role at the company?

Today, I am the marketing director for the company. I’m in charge of handling the image of Junaid Perfumes: everything from the design of our outlets to the colours and designs of the perfumes and bottles themselves.

In your opinion, what are some of the most important qualities of a good leader?

An important value that was instilled in me from a young age is to always treat someone as you would like others to treat you. I do my best to treat everyone I work with as a friend as I realise that without the support of my team, I am nothing.

Junaid Perfumes started in 1910 and has since grown into one of the GCC’s best known perfume brands. Could you give us an idea of how large the operation is today? Today, Junaid Perfumes has around 140 outlets in the GCC. We’re one of the top five perfume brands in the region. However, our presence is felt further abroad as well, as a number of distributors in countries such as China and Russia stock our products.

What do you think distinguishes Junaid Perfumes from other Arabic perfumes?

I think what stands out about Junaid Perfumes the most is our presentation.

74

january 2017

I believe that we’re far ahead of our competitors in terms of every visual aspect of our company. Another unique aspect to our business is that we’re constantly innovating and moving forward. Whether it has to do with our products or the commercial aspects, we’re never one to rest on our laurels.

What times of the year are the busiest in terms of sales? The majority of our perfumes are sold to be given as gifts and are even packaged as such. Hence, sales are busiest during times of the year when gift-giving is especially common, namely Ramadan and Eid. During such occasions we also have a lot of Agarwood sales along with other arabic burning incenses such as 'Bukhoor'. These have become part of our traditional custom and heritage and are widely used in homes on special occasions or even as daily freshers.

Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies and interests?

I’m a massive fan of automobiles. I love anything to do with cars and motorsport. What started off initially as a hobby has become my escape from the pressures of work and daily life. So I regularly take my own car to track days at the Bahrain International Circuit, drive it hard and come back feeling refreshed.

What are some of Junaid Perfumes’ future plans, in terms of products and company expansion?

I’m not at liberty to give you exact details, but I can say that we will soon be expanding our presence within the Asia and Africa regions. In terms of new products, we launch around thirty new fragrances a year, with up to seven launched during Ramadan alone. So you can definitely expect to see a number of new additions to our range in the coming months.

Being the car fan that you are, which Bentley is your favourite and why?

Our family already owns three Bentleys and may be getting another one soon. While I don’t drive them myself regularly, I very much admire the Mulsanne Speed. I just love the look and design of the car, especially of the interior. Furthermore, it’s pretty hard to find a car more comfortable than this one.
