Synonymous with Madurai is the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva (as Lord Sundareswarar) and his divine consort Goddess Meenakshi. Visit the Hall of Thousand Pillars. Also visit the Koodal Azhagar Temple and Thirumalai Nayak Palace.

Buy yourself a resplendent silk saree from one of the numerous stores across the city. The city is also known for metallurgical objects and utensils. For some of the best handicraft products, head to Avani Moola Street and Chithirai Street.

Fact

Although fe stivals like Chithirai (April/ May) and Jallikattu (bull tamingJanuary) draw most visitors, the city is also famous for the Madurai malli (jasmine flower), which has been given a GI tag.
