WELCOME TO THE EXCELLENCE IN HOUSEWARES AWARDS 2020 None of us could have predicted how this year would go. It almost seems like yesterday when the industry was travelling to Spring Fair and Ambiente, and the murmuring news of a strange new virus was just starting to become known. Little did we know that this would turn into a global pandemic, the first for many of our lifetimes. There have been many tragic losses and some extraordinary tough times for everyone both on the business and personal front. And so, while we are here to celebrate, we do pay our respects to everyone who has suffered in any way, shape or form. Indeed, though, there are always positives to be found. Resilience, a reminder of our fantastic health service, a new appreciation for our friendships and relationships – again both at work and at home. We’ve all found out what our support network really looks like when the going gets tough. As will be highlighted this evening, one thing we can all be grateful for – as a sector united – is the thousands if not millions of new bakers, home-chefs and families who have re-engaged with what it means to cook and organise a home using the incredible products and retailers this market has to offer. During lockdown and beyond, John Lewis & Partners has been supporting the NHS in a variety of ways, including the creation of a fundraising mug. The NHS mug was designed in-house and produced in the UK, with all proﬁts going to support NHS charities. By the summer, John Lewis had sold over 10,000 mugs..

During lockdown Borough Kitchen launched its online cook school, offering ‘cookalongs’ and specialist classes, helping customers to learn new skills and techniques in their kitchens. Harts ran a campaign to promote the KitchenAid Velvet Blue collection as the retailer’s exclusive colour – so successful that it was extended into the ﬁrst quarter of 2020. Both the Velvet Blue Artisan Mixer and 9-Speed Hand Blender were the most popular colours in their respective categories. By summer, over 2,000 units of the Velvet Blue range had been sold.
