Editor’s comment Here is a cautionary tale coinciding with our issue featuring bakeware (pages 44-49). A few months ago, to ‘save time’ at my daughter’s birthday party, we used disposable aluminium foil trays to cook the birthday feast of sausage and chips. On getting these out of my mum’s Aga (with which I never have a great cooking relationship, even with the best of pans), a tray buckled and boiling fat travelled from my wrist to elbow. Some timesaver! While a lot of cold water and homeopathic cream did wonders, I vow never to use anything but sturdy bakeware in the future! As per the mantras of good housewares stockists – quality is worth its price! Unfortunately, my luck did not pick up after Above: Looking forward to Christmas: the burn incident. Soon after I had the surprising diagnosis of breast cancer, PH’s Emma Cain and Jo Howard beside the Homeland trend themed Christmas although thankfully at an early stage. So, since seeing many of you at the merchandising display by Scarlet Opus at Exclusively shows, I have had a couple of operations. Sadly, I had to miss two the recent Exclusively shows (see news). highlights of the housewares year – the Excellence in Housewares Awards product judging day and retailer awards validation meeting. However, I would like to pass on a huge thank you to all those at the product judging, not only for their dedication in coming together to decide on the best products, but, personally, for their messages, gorgeous bouquet of flowers and chocolates which really cheered me up! I now have another (last) operation at the end of August and am looking forward to a healthier end to 2017. In addition to sturdy bakeware, this PH has plenty to feast your eyes on, including our retail visit (pages 64-65), which reflects the rising influence of garden centres, and licensed products (pages 50-51). But of course, this issue is dedicated to the wonderful Excellence in Housewares Awards finalists – featured from pages 26-43. Congratulations to each and every one!

JML’s biggest festive media spend Backing increased consumer spending over the next few months, JML has announced its largest ever media spend this Christmas. The company will be investing in 30-second adverts on ITV, Channel 4 and Sky. Group head of sales Brian Keogh said that, despite the slump in retail sales and increased inflation in 2017, JML is confident consumers will spend big this Christmas. “People still want to treat themselves and find products that give them the feel good factor," states Brian. "While economic conditions are tightening a little, now felt like a good time to boost the presence of our products.” JML had its most profitable Christmas on record last year. Ken Daly, ceo, said the hike in spending showed JML’s continued confidence and ambition. “We’re also investing heavily in our digital marketing but, as a multichannel retailer, we cannot lose sight of what has worked for us historically.”

Ambiente goes Dutch The Netherlands is Ambiente's seventh partner country, with the 2018 show taking place from February 9-13. "The Netherlands is known for its outstanding design which is both minimalist and experimental while being innovative and unconventional," comments Detlef Brown, member of the board of management, Messe Frankfurt, which organises the show. The Netherlands presentation will cover a wide range of products that feature outstanding design quality and will be curated by Dutch industrial designer Robert Bronwasser.

What More to the rescue Wham Bam storage boxes have been winging their way to locals in the Hyndburn area, thanks to the generosity of What More. The local business came to the rescue of the Hyndburn Helpers, a local volunteer group, who had put out an appeal on social media for boxes for their food bank. The Wham Bam range was deemed robust and secure, allowing for a system of identification, with the colour options helping in sorting all the donated food, one of the biggest tasks facing the volunteers. Commenting, What More's marketing and product development manager, Adam Wilkinson, added: "As a large local manufacturer, we are very aware of our place in the community and take a pride in it. For many of our workforce, the Hyndburn area is where they live or grew up, and to find out that people are so in need of food in your local area has been a real eye opener."

Imperial and Whitford celebrate partnership Imperial is celebrating 50 years of innovating in cookware (from 1967 to 2017) and its longstanding partnership with Whitford (in excess of 30 years) at the forthcoming Excellence in Housewares Awards. Managing director Mo Bham reflects: "Imperial is delighted to have delivered five decades of inspiring and innovative cookware, while Whitford continue to support us throughout our exciting partnership." Whitford and Imperial jointly sponsor the pre-dinner 'higher or lower' game a lively feature of the Excellence in Housewares Awards night - and will be providing a special gift for every guest to raise (or lower) when they play the game.

Space and hometime

The industry's major shows, Exclusively Housewares and Exclusively Electrical, were another huge success, say organisers Brooke House Exhibitions, with senior buyers from a myriad of different retail categories, to include international buyers, in attendance. “Initial feedback from exhibitors and visitors pointed to another busy and productive two days for everyone involved," confirmed show director Simon Boyd. "We had tremendous support, not only from key sponsors RKW, Brabantia and Brita, but from all our exhibitors for our new initiatives, and we will be looking, as always, to build on this for next year,” he commented. Making its debut at the show was a brand new press showcase, aimed at attracting consumer press and bloggers to review key product launches and ranges. The initiative saw over 50 top consumer journalists attending, with more requesting a post-show brief on the showcased brands. Coverage to date has already appeared in Hello magazine for new Exclusively Housewares exhibitor Coravin, and in GQ for Welsh Slateware. BHETA sponsored the popular seminar programme, with talks held in the new Tomorrow's Kitchen area. The seminars combined to give a detailed overview of what's to come for the kitchen of the future and allowed visitors the opportunity to view some of the latest kitchen technology including a Samsung fridge with interior cameras, a remote controlled oven and the latest induction hob. . Next year's Exclusively Housewares and Exclusively Electrical will take place on June 12 and 13 at the Business Design Centre, London.

Exclusively Electrical’s taste sensations

Sage treated visitors to samples of foods transformed by the brand’s Smoking Gun, Smeg created Avocado Hummus and Frozen Berry and Gingernut Yoghurt Pops using its chopper and blender attachments, Blendtec rustled up Pineapple Smoothies while Vitamix showed how easy it is to make Pistachio Nut Falafels. Vitamix debuted its new Ascent Series blenders to the UK market boasting reimagined design and multiple container sizes as well as a new Vitamix Quick Start Guide. The stand also showcased Vitamix’s refreshed brand identity wuith updated packaging, merchandising graphics with ‘life-affirming messages’ and new recipe cards. “Our team of chefs are creating restaurant recipes that are easy to make at home with a Vitamix,” confirms marketing manager, Karen Hicks. Vitamix Ascent Series blenders were also part of Exclusively’s Tomorrow’s Kitchen installation offering a complete system of containers with wireless connectivity. Meanwhile, SMART introduced its Samosa Maker, which is “unique to the market, and allows consumers to mix their fillings,” notes SMART’s Paul Bundock.

Trends for 2018, highlighted in a presentation by Scarlet Opus’ Phil Pond in his presentation at Exclusively Housewares, included ‘Urban Planet’, which is “Inspired by a new era of planetary exploration.” Its colour palettes include darker metallics (evoking the night sky), iridescent rainbow effects with “refined concrete” among trendy materials for the home. Phil highlighted products at Exclusively from Fairmont & Main, Premier Housewares’ Vertex geometric wine stands, LSA’s iridescent wine glasses and Kuhn Rikon’s Hot Monument pan (pictured). Other trends in Phil’s enlightening presentation included ‘Homeland’, with an echo of World War I reminiscence. The Homeland trend also fuses rustic with urban and celebrates authentic, handmade looks and products with “heirloom qualities,” with the colour green set to deepen in 2018. Examples from the show included Correlle’s Tranquil Reflection tableware from World Kitchen (illustrating “a cold mist that fades”), Welsh Slateware’s tableware, Fairmont & Main’s Raw, and Denby’s Studio Craft collection. Slow brew coffee and leaf tea are also integral to the renaissance of “hand crafted and traditional skills.” • Coffee from Brewed by Hand was one of the highlights of Tomorrow’s Kitchen’s demonstration schedule. Exclusively rallies for Shelter Exhibitors from Exclusively Housewares and Exclusively Electrical generously donated over £7,000 worth of housewares products (at retail cost) for PH’s long running Housewares for the Homeless initiative with Shelter. The donations included over £2,000 worth of goods from Meyer Group. Cookware, bakeware, food preparation and utility products were among donations that were packed up into huge boxes by Shelter volunteers to go to the charity’s projects in Birmingham and Slough, with the help of delivery company, AMPM Transportation. All of the donations will help previously homeless or badly housed families that have little or few possessions. PH’s Jo Howard commented: “By providing the means to be able cook and clean using quality, durable products, Housewares for the Homeless helps to create settled homes.” The initiative was established by PH in 2000, and Above: Shelter’s Kitty O’Shea and PH’s Jo continues to make a massively positive difference to Howard and Emma Cain with people’s lives with the support of the Exclusively shows Housewares for the Homewares donors at Exclusively Housewares 2017. and its exhibitors. Green light for wine preservation CellarDine debuted its innovative ZOS (Zero Oxygen Solutions) Halo wine preserver on the PHA Kitchessentials stand at Exclusively Housewares. Peter Dunne, CellarDine’s md explains: “By absorbing 100% of the oxygen inside a wine bottle, the ZOS Halo can keep wine fresh for two months and has already been described by a leading UK wine club as a ‘game changer’”. He emphasises: “Neither a vacuum system or argon gas can get rid of all the oxygen in a wine bottle, and it’s oxygen, not air that spoils wine.” The simple-to-use gadget incorporates a cartridge that can be used to keep 15 bottles fresh and features a ‘talking point’ lighting system that shows when the preservation process starts and finishes.

Dogs’ dinners Country Matters’ bestselling laptops featuring photos of dogs have a strong appeal to a younger generation, notes the company’s Zac Barrett. “A lot of other laptrays are aimed at an older market whereas our designs appeal to all ages – younger people that move away often want a laptray featuring a dog like the one at home!”

Straws that help save the oceans Coinciding with current global environmental campaigns that highlight the damage that disposable straws are wreaking in the world’s oceans, Klean Kanteen (distributed by Whitby & Co) has launched a pack of reusable stainless steel straws, a straw lid for coffee and smoothies on the go, and Brush Set. Garry Woodhouse, sales and marketing director at Whitby & Co, said of this and the brand’s new Vacuum Insulated Reflect (ideal for takeaway iced coffees):“It’s really important to our team to reduce our coffee cup and plastic waste where possible, and make it easy and fun to #BringYourOwn.” According to One Green Planet, we produce 300 million tons of plastic globally; 78% of this not recycled and 8.8 million tons ends up in our oceans – including vast amounts of plastic straws.

Wok of all ages Talking to PH on the DKB stand at Exclusively Housewares, celebrity chef, Ken Hom notes that “an increasingly diverse audience” are enjoying his demonstrations in cookshops and housewares stockists, including a lot of men. “Cooking in a wok is like bbqing – it’s a man thing!” Ken states. He acknowledges that his “longevity cuts through generations,” with recent audiences including, “a woman with her daughter and granddaughter, who knew me from Saturday Kitchen.” Ken Hom’s stir fry demonstration was a highlight of Exclusively’s Tomorrow Kitchen. Count down to Zero UK distributor, 2tech introduced a collection of exciting innovations on its stand at the recent Exclusively Housewares exhibition, including Zero Water. Established in the USA in 2009, Zero Water has become the States’ second most prominent water filter jug after Brita. “Our patented technology removes all water contaminants including heavy metals and fluoride to create pure H20,” explains Robert Roney, vice president of sales for Zero Water in the US. Robert demonstrated the purification process (which uses five stages of filtration to remove 99.6% of total dissolved solids) by ‘turning’ red wine into water during the show! He pointed out, “Tea and coffee tastes much better using Zero Water.” The 2tech stand also featured the Hackit kitchen utensil (selling over one million in Norway) and reCap lids, whose range includes waterless airlock fermenters that are compatible with Mason and Above: Zero Water’s Robert Roney measured the reduction Kilner jars (and were a feature of the Inventors’ Corner at the most of total dissolved solids. recent International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago). l The Guardian newspaper’s Rhik Samadder gave reCap’s Fermenting Starter Kit 4 Stars in his culinary gadget column (August 2). Reflecting on the rise of home fermentation for gut health, Rhik describes the reCap’s system as ‘zero-maintenance’, explaining that, ‘The one-way valve allows CO2 to escape, while preventing oxygen and contaminants from reaching the cabbage, so it can’t mould.’

Above: Anna with some popular titles on Octopus’ stand at Exclusively Housewares.

Flavoursome books for cookshops Food and drink related books are “definitely a growth area for cookshops. particularly when books are displayed alongside related products,” confirms Anna Gruber of Octopus Publishing, exhibiting at Exclusively Housewares. While Persiana has been Octopus’ best selling food and drink title for three years, Anna notes rising interest in “the untapped culture of African cooking, which can be quite easy and successful”, including titles such as Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen. Easy entertaining titles are among the top sellers, covering cocktail making and tapas (and “not just Spanish.”). Anna also reports strong interest in cold brew coffee techniques and notes that gin titles are outselling those of any other spirit.

Salad days Creative Products was among the exhibitors at Exclusively Housewares who were delighted with buyers’ response to new products. Launches included the versatile Chefs’ Basket and Easy Salad – a fast and mess free way to prepare salad, combining salad bowl and strainer with a built in cutting board and integral knife guide slots.

VIEWS ON KNIFES Alan Hawkins, ceo of bira comments on the potential changes to knife sales legislation “Home Secretary Amber Rudd has recently stated that she will be tightening laws on the sale of knives, in particular making it necessary that any online knife sales have to be picked up in person within the store they were purchased from, in order for ages and identities to be checked. In theory, this is good for independent retailers. While the law is clear on knife sales instore, and we have worked with the Home Office to provide guidance to our members on this, online sale guidance has not been so clear. From the retailer’s perspective, having customers coming into store is always welcome. And while taking card payments online means there is a record of who a sale of a knife is made to, this is an extra level of security to both the public and retailer. If the Government changes the legislation on the sale of knives we imagine they will have to do the same for acid based products, as these horrendous attacks are increasing too. Although this will increase retailers admin, it is an area that needs to be looked at and we think age and quantity restrictions would help, as well as paying only with a credit card to prevent under age individuals from getting hold of acid based products as well as knives. However, while the attention is currently on retail, it is worth noting that both knives and cleaning products with an acid content can be found in any kitchen. So until there is more education around the harm that can be caused by knife and acid attacks, there’s not going to be an instant result. “ (For more news and views from bira see page 17).

Anti knife crime consultation Home secretary Amber Rudd intends to tighten the law in order to stop under 18s being able to purchase knives. The proposed measures would mean anyone who bought a knife online would be required to collect it in person, making housewares retailers responsible for checking the age of all buyers. It is already an offence to sell knives to under 18 year olds, with the new offences meaning that knives could no longer be delivered to private property, making it harder for underage sales to go undetected. The reaction from the housewares industry has revealed some insightful comments. "While it's good practice and plain Above: Knives image courtesy common sense to introduce age verification on all knife of Taylors Eye Whitness. purchases, hopefully a sensible balance can be reached," comments David Conduit, buyer, Harts of Stur. "The headlines are stating that all knives must be collected in store in person, and ID provided, before the knives are released. I hope the government considers the AVS (age verification service) currently offered by certain carriers as a suitable alternative to in store collection. It's worth remembering that the vast majority of knife consumers are purchasing their knives for normal use, and do not want the inconvenience of having to go out and collect them. Plus, not all of the population live in areas where a collection point is local or convenient." Meanwhile, Alan Hawkins, ceo of bira sees a potential benefit for increased footfall for independents (see separate comment). Trade association BHETA is asking housewares suppliers to express their opinions on the impact of legislative changes to pass on to the Government (see linked story). The anti knife crime consultation will also seek views on whether the offence of possessing a knife in a public place and school premises should be extended to include the grounds of other educational establishments, such higher education institutions.

From wire to wood Kitchenware and homewares manufacturer, Wireworks is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The company originally created designs made from chrome plated steel wire but now its products (including 25 pieces specifically for kitchen and tabletop) are made from sustainable hardwoods and bamboo finished in a variety of coatings. Above: Part of Wirework’s design-lead kitchen and tabletop collection.

Two become one Two leading companies in the industry have made acquisitions in recent weeks. Thermos has acquired Brands Home & Leisure (BHL) Group, the UK distributor for Thermos, alfi, Luminarc, Cristal D'Arques, and Le Parfait. "BHL has been a valuable and steadfast partner for 16 years," comments Rick Dias, president and chief operating officer at Thermos LLC, whose parent companies acquired BHL Group. "We are excited to join together in this new alliance and look forward to creating opportunities for expanded growth in the UK market." Adds Nick Kime, managing director of BHL: "Thermos and Genuine Thermos Brand products have been at the core of our business since the beginning of our partnership. This is a natural next step in the evolution of our successful union.” As part of the acquisition, the existing senior management team of Nick Kime, Mark Snape and Richard Walker will remain in place to lead the business. l In addition, home textiles company Ulster Weavers has acquired Northern Irish giftware brand LoveOlli, created by an ex-Ulster Top right: Among the range of Thermos Weavers designer, extending the company’s range products. into more diverse markets, a first step in Ulster Right: LoveOlli from Weavers’ wider expansion plans. Ulster Weavers.

Knives suppliers: your views Following proposals for changes in knives sales legislation, BHETA is canvassing opinion from its members that are involved in the selling and marketing of knives. The association will present its findings to Government as part of a consultation stage on the proposed changes to the law. BHETA is asking suppliers several questions including: What percentage of your knives sales is to online customers? What effect, in percentage terms, would you anticipate in lost sales? What do you believe will be the direct impact on you and your customers’ business if this new legislation is passed? Do you think that there are ways of improving the identification process by online retailers by other means - for example, the purchaser needing to produce photo identification and signature? Will Jones, housewares director of BHETA comments: “Given that a high percentage of knives are now sold online, the proposals could present a threat to business. On the other hand, such legislation may result in a positive impact on bricks and mortar retail.” He added: “Clearly this is an important issue from many points of view, so it is vital that we represent the feelings of suppliers in the market in order that the best conclusions can be reached.” (For more BHETA news see page 16).

Eyes on export

New Soda among new member Kitchen innovations company, New Soda is the latest housewares company to join BHETA. The Anglo-American design company is based in Henley on Thames with sales and customer service offices in New Jersey. Its products include the Big Fork, Spoon Ups and Silly Cones. BHETA’s Will Jones said, “Innovation is the name of the game and New Soda really does demonstrate how practical experience of the kitchen environment combined with open-minded inspiration can deliver a regular flow of appealing products.” One of Europe’s most comprehensive housewares and catering suppliers, U Group, has also joined BHETA. Names such as Samuel Groves, Oneida, Arcoroc, Rubbermaid and Steelite are just a few of the 16 brands distributed by Birminghambased U Group. Above: New member - Damon Meredith of New Soda demonstrating the Big Peeler at Ambiente (where the gadget was part of the prestigious Solutions exhibition).

BHETA has created a new committee to drive export initiatives and explore opportunities. The new Export Committee is chaired by Tony Grimshaw of What More UK and includes Geoff Gorst of Meyer Group, Jonathan Collier of Monument Tools, Joe Denham of VegTrug, as well as BHETA's Will Jones and Nicola Adams-Brown. The Export Committee’s overriding objective is to encourage and support BHETA members either to start exporting or to build their existing export business. It is already working with the DTI and the international Chamber of Commerce to explore opportunities for overseas missions, international shows, and grant availability. Initiatives so far include provision of a list of international housewares, tableware, and small domestic appliance buyers for special invitation to Exclusively Housewares and Exclusively Electrical, resulting in the attendance of retailers from as far afield as Australia, Poland, Latvia, the Czech Republic and Hong Kong attending, as well as buyers from across Europe. The Export Committee will host a BHETA Export Forum for members on October 11 at Austin Court in Birmingham to coincide with the Chamber’s International Annual Conference on the following day. Members interested in developing their exports to the Baltic states are invited to participate in an Export Mission (see separate story). Commenting on the new emphasis on export, Will Jones, Above Tony Grimshaw, OBE of What More is chairing the new BHETA housewares director of BHETA and a member of the newly Export Committee. founded committee said, “The market is very tough for many suppliers at the moment and BHETA has been encouraging members to explore various forms of diversification for some time. Given that the one upside of the fall in the £pound’s value is improved conditions for export, finding and building relationships with customers overseas has to be a tremendous opportunity. The BHETA Export Committee aims to help members exploit this opportunity to the maximum.”

Stay data protection savvy BHETA is advising all its members about the EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which recently replaced the Data Protection Act (DPA). The new act has much greater scope and much tougher punishments for both companies and individuals at those companies, should they fail to comply. The new regulation stipulates that any data held by any organisation must be for a specific purpose and that confirmation of consent must be obtained from the data subject. This includes communication with customers, prospects, suppliers, staff, and service providers.

On the board BHETA’s recent AGM saw David Holmes of the DRH Collection appointed treasurer, while Tony Grimshaw of What More also joined the board. Roger Morgan Grenville, chairman of Dexam, has extended his tenure as president of BHETA after two years in the role. BHETA board members include Nick Cornwell of DKB and Richard Walker of Eddingtons.

See you at Autumn Fair BHETA has a stand at Autumn Fair where members can hold meetings, and get updates on BHETA initiatives. We’re here for you “There always seems to be renewed energy around the time of the shows. Below: bira members are invited to visit the new you need or generally just on hand to have a chat! look bira offices. But the past few months haven’t be easy within retail – National Living Wage, Business Rates hikes, and now the implementation of GDPR, making tax digital and the ongoing pensions regulations are causing constant headaches for independents. None of these things are simple and all take retailers away from what they love doing best – serving their customers. Knife and acid attacks are also on the increase and the media are looking to retail for answers (see news comment), but are forgetting that these items are all available in people’s homes already. It is fair to say that all retailers, but in particular cookshop and housewares retailers, have a lot on their plate. Independent retailers can be assured that we are in constant consultation to ensure that the independent perspective is always considered by the Government and we will be getting our own meeting directly with the Government soon to put our views forward. Our Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee meets on a regular basis to discuss, but most importantly to take action on the biggest issues facing retail – rest assured we won’t stop! However, at a grassroot level we are on hand to provide the advice and support our members need. We are only at the end of the phone, so continue to talk to us, speak to us at the shows, join the Cookshop and Housewares Action Group, attend a branch meeting or even visit us at our new offices in Birmingham, which officially open this month. We are here to help. “

New figures show Q2 decline Disappointingly, bira’s Quarterly Sales Monitor’s Q2 figures show a decline in the cookshop, gift, hardware and DIY sectors, down some 5.5% from this time last year. The overall average growth/decline is down -1.1% compared to -0.4% in the same quarter in 2016. However, the data states that 49.16% of independent retailers remain “reasonably” or “very confident” about the year ahead. Overall, only three of the eight regions have seen a slowdown in sales, with Northern Ireland being the hardest hit with a 10% decrease in sales. However, Wales and the North East continue to have a decent growth. Some 46.41% of independent retailers surveyed said they would be expecting a significant amount of margin pressure moving forward – this is up 7.21% from Quarter 1 2017.

bira direct hosted a special day last month (July) to ensure suppliers, retailers and bira work more closely to support the cookshop and housewares industry. The practical session was attended by nine suppliers, including Dexam, Meyer Group, DKB, Rayware, Kuhn Rikon, Horwoods, Denby, T&G, Eddingtons. It involved the suppliers forming into intimate groups of three people to discuss one of nine ideas to encourage greater opportunities for retailers and suppliers. Jeff Moody, md of bira direct said, “We’ve come away with a wealth of knowledge and ideas for supporting cookshop and housewares retailers more and in turn supporting out bira direct suppliers. It was a very positive session, showing us that we are very much on the right track and moving forward.” The group set actions ahead of the next session. For the past 13 years, The Excellence in Housewares Awards has been linked with gia: the Global Innovation Awards programme, globally sponsored by the International Housewares Association (IHA) and the International Home + Housewares Show (IH+HS), with PH as UK sponsor. One Excellence in Housewares Awards 2017 retail winner will become the UK gia winner for 2017/2018. The winner will fly out to Chicago to represent the UK at the international gia gala during the IH+HS (March 10-13). The show itself features an exhibit of gia winners, recognising global retail excellence. At the gia gala, around 25 national gia winners compete for the coveted titles of Global Honoree, announced at the gia gala. Those that have achieved the title of Global Honorees retain this for life, and may not be a national winner again. The UK’s Global Honorees include Selfridges, Bentalls, Steamer Trading, Lakeland, John Lewis, Lords and Borough Kitchen. See www.housewares.org/gia". In addition, faciltated by bira, another award, The Oxford Summer School Award will be given to an exceptional retailer that the validation panel agreed deserving of the investment in their career. The Oxford Summer School has been transforming the careers of retail professionals from their first steps in retail management right through to board level since 1923. Many of the top retail leaders attribute their success in part to their OSS experience. The winner will access the highest quality specialised retail management training, designed by retailers for retailers, with a value up to £3,250. This covetable prize will inspire new ways of thinking and working and have a positive impact on the business. The Oxford Summer School programme portfolio includes the Foundation, Academy and Masters, plus specialist programmes including Digital Influence – Transforming Retail and new Retail Property Programme.

Bottom: Housewares buyers are not short of ideas of what they would like the UK Government to do to help a retailer’s current plight.

The Entente Cordiale In keeping with the Parisian theme of the Excellence in Housewares Awards this year, retail buyers who formed the Judging Panel for the product categories were up for sharing a soupçon of French flavouring. Napoleon famously referred to the UK as a nation of shopkeepers. With this in mind, the judges were asked what plea they would make to the current UK government to improve the plight for housewares retailers. Plus, for a bit of fun, they also revealed what or who they felt had that special ‘je ne saîs quoi’?

Helen Miller, senior buyer of Fenwick Brent Cross Dean Hawes, buyer of Fenwick Colchester S’il vous plait: “I do wish the UK government would invest more in traditional town centres, such as by reducing parking rates."

S’il vous plait: “Sort out the rates, rent, parking costs, tax online only retailers and reduce the number of empty shops.” Je ne saîs quoi: “Schalk Brits – he is the best looking hooker in the world!” Above: Helen Miller with her ‘je ne sais qui’ maestro, Saracens’ player Schalk Brits.

Simone Hillman, buyer of Borough Kitchen, London S’il vous plait: “Anything to encourage independent retailers and specialty retailers. Reducing rates and taxes would be a big help!” Je ne saîs quoi: "That would have to be Gordon Segal, the founder of Crate & Barrel."

Alan Wood, joint managing director of Trevor Mottram, Tunbridge Wells

David Conduit, purchasing manager of Harts of Stur S’il vous plait: “My three pleas to the Government are: 1. Grant tax concessions for fuel for carriers/haulers. At present the cost of moving goods around the country - from supplier to retailer and from retailer to customer - constitutes too high a percentage of the final price of housewares products. 2. Stop selling off free parking areas and building commercial car parks in towns. 3. End the rates benefits for out-of-town shops." Below: Free parking in towns in a plea from many retailers.

S’il vous plait: “Redress the balance of business rates between town centre retailers and retail park outlets. Plus, please address the imbalance of parking for high street vs retail parks.” Je ne saîs quoi: “Moi! Everyone tells me I have that ‘je ne sais quoi’ but I think that it may be less complementary than I would like!”

Right: Princess Kate has that certain something.

S’il vous plait: “Abolish car park charges, address business rates, listen to Mary Portas and stop subsidies for charity shops.” Je ne saîs quoi: “Princess Kate – so elegant, stylish and a great ambassador. I really think the young royals should give it a go at running the country.

S’il vous plait: “Provide incentives to be in retail, support small businesses/startups and to review structure of business rates.” Je ne saîs quoi: “Robert Welch and Joseph Joseph, both are innovative and iconic and I believe that they are both staples of a modern day cookware store.”

Christine Lynn-Thomas, proprietor of Kooks Unlimited, Richmond S’il vous plait: “Increase VAT charge for online internet companies or impose an extra charge. Each town should put aside shop units for indies with their rates slashed to prevent all the same high streets looking alike. Parking on Sundays should be free – certainly in December.” Je ne saîs quoi: “Andy Murray – my hero. He never gives up, always gives it 100% has been a true British icon for me now for so many years. And there’s all of the charity work he does behind the scene too.”

She always comes in with such inspirational ideas!” Below: The Tool Shop’s Sarah Edmiston ‘plates up’.

Gary Gordon, director of Kitchen Kapers S’il vous plait: “Cut George Osborne’s goolies off. He promised total reform of retail rates – but backed off due to being brain dead. Plus, differentiate types of warehouses and rate them accordingly. (A) A warehouse is ‘boxes in and boxes out’; (B) A pre-retail warehouse is where products are prepared for a retailer; (C) Amazon is a shop where the postman comes to collect parcels instead of consumers coming. (A) should remain at the current ratable value; (B) double the current value while (C) should be on the same rate as Harrods.” Je ne sais quoi: “Boulevard Haussmann in Paris – the shops and stores have some of the best collections/stocks of housewares/cookshop products in the world. Plus, ‘cookshop town’ in Tokyo, Japan – which is the world catering and cookshop products for cook and caterer in one street. Claire Noye, director of Ruby & Scarlet, Felixstowe S’il vous plait: “I do not think the UK government has seen that we are supposed to be a nation of shopkeepers as they are certainly not doing much to protect us! They need to end subsidies for high street charity shops selling new products. As a small business in retail, there is very little help on offer from any UK government body either when you are starting up or been trading for while. I believe the UK government must address the huge issues around business rates or there will be no ‘small shops’ left (by small this is not size of shop – a business can still be small in larger premises.” Je ne saîs quoi: “That would have to be Joseph Joseph, the innovation coming out of that company is second to none, its products are loved by young and old alike. Creative Tops has also upped its ‘je ne sais quoi’ quota by reinventing the company in a good way. Mary Portas also deserves a mention for her work in supporting small businesses - and if she can re-invigorate the business rates campaign, all the better!” Left: Claire Noye (Ruby & Scarlet) tries out an entry’s pouring ability.

Kate Lynch, assistant buyer of Debenhams S’il vous plait: “Brexit has crushed the exchange rates, making it extremely difficult for retailers to bring in the best products for customers. It would be good if they could undo the damage!” Je ne saîs quoi: “It would have to be my favourite place on earth – Yosemite National Park in California. I love to hike and be surrounded by nature! Luckily a lot of brands are really focusing on this kind of lifestyle product so they have that je ne saîs quoi too!”

Holly Wilson, owner of Prep Cookshop, Stoke Newington and Richard Dare, Primrose Hill S’il vous plait: “Overhaul the business rates system – level the playing field between trade high street and online.” Je ne saîs quoi: “Jamie Dornan.”

Angela Williamson, merchandise planner for Lakeland S’il vous plait: “Increase football in the high street and boost the economy by controlling rates on businesses.” Je ne saîs quoi: “My heated clother airer – it’s saved me loads of money and dries clothes overnight – viva la revolution!”

RETAIL EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR Criteria: Nominations were sought for retail employees who make a difference, with their enthusiastic, attentive and knowledgeable service (and who could be considered ‘the unsung heroes’ of the shop floor or customer services team.)

l ROB FALCONER

l ALISON HOBBS

l MAUREEN HOOKER

Buyer of Steamer Trading

Visual merchandiser of Potters Cookshop, Hockley

Retail sales manager of Bakers and Larners of Holt

“Alison joined Potters in September 2013. I used to deal with her when she worked at an electrical distributors, so I knew that she was great working in sales. Alison is a trained window dresser and has created such fantastic windows for us, customers come to see us just to see the amazing displays that she has created, Alison’s skills are excellent and we fully appreciate them, but she never ceases to amaze me when she comes into work, always cheerful, enthusiastic, full of ideas – qualities which are priceless and a credit to her professionalism.”

“Since joining Bakers and Larners 23 years ago, Maureen has risen through the company and has excelled in her successive roles throughout the store. Her position today is as retail sales manager, which she has held for the past 16 years. Her enthusiasm, teamwork ethos, combined with her detailed product knowledge and keen awareness of market trends has seen Maureen’s Cookshop department rise to become one of Bakers and Larners’ top performing departments. Such attributes have seen Maureen and her team win countless national awards.”

“Rob joined Steamer Trading in November 2015, following a 15-year career at Selfridges, where he’d had experience across Cookshop, Home Accessories, Christmas, Bed and Bath and Stationery. Rob started at a time of great change within Steamer Trading – with our longstanding buyer Priti moving on to pastures new, Alison, his director, falling ill, and a whole new merchandising team being built up around him. Despite these challenges, Rob thrived in what was, after all, his first full buying role. He moved from London to Brighton to be closer to work and his new colleagues, and fully embraced the family culture of the Steamer offices.”

l LESLEY MURRAY

l NICK TIMMINS

l MARY WALLACE

Housewares manager of Highland Industrial Supplies, Inverness

Concession manager of Admiral, Walsall

Supervisor of the Cook Shop at Rejects, Kirkcaldy

“Lesley Murray, our housewares manager has been with the company for 23 years. She has been a very loyal and extremely hard working member of staff. Lesley goes way past her remit to give the customer a 100% satisfaction by sharing her vast knowledge, giving advice and a great service in her department. Testament to all this, she receives many lovely compliments, and we frequently have customers dropping off flowers and gifts for Lesley.”

“Nick started working for Admiral Housewares in 2013 as a part-time warehouse assistant. During the following three years he showed extensive leadership qualities over and above his role. Over time these qualities were recognised and resulted in his promotion to concession manager in 2016. The management of Admiral believe in promoting from within and having someone who understands all key aspects of the business is, we believe, key to the future growth of the business.. His people skills, enthusiasm and ability to drive the business forward makes him a very worthy candidate for Retail Employee of the Year.”

“Mary has worked here for the past 14 years, working her way up through the department from assistant to department supervisor. She is very committed to her job, working tirelessly to keep the department new and interesting. She works extremely well with her team, involving them in all aspects of the department and she has an exceptionally professional manner with the suppliers. Her product knowledge is excellent, understanding exactly what the customers are after, which enables fantastic customer service. In her spare time she undertakes comparative shopping making sure the customers get the best price they can.”

“We opened a gift shop in Melton Mowbray in 2010 and the shop has done really quite well. Then we thought that considering Melton Mowbray is known as the ‘Rural Capital of Food’ and the home of the pork pie and Stilton cheese, there really should be a Cookshop! So we found a suitable shop close to the gift shop and in February 2016 Jupes Cookshop was open for business.”

"Kerry's Home Furnishings opened in 2016 in the heart of Lowestoft. We supply an extensive range of the finest furniture, linens and appliances as well as collections from big name brands like Kilner and KitchenAid. We also offer bespoke services, such as kitchen, flooring and blinds and curtain fitting - we also have our own traditionally styled tearoom in store ."

We have joined Trouva and over the last year have been growing our online sales and presence.”

“Rye Cookshop opened its doors in September 2016 and has quickly become Rye’s ‘go-to’ destination for all things cookware, glassware, ovenware, kitchenware, taleware and clever gadgetry for cooking enthusiasts of all levels. Rye Cookshop has undertaken a full refurbishment with handmade shelving, counter, display units and shop sign, which all add to this great shopping experience.”

COOKSHOP Leek “The Wooden Spoon Cookshop in Leek first opened its doors on September 2016. We had a great opening event, during which the shop was officially opened by the Mayor, and the Town Crier. Bake on

With Channel 4's new Bake Off series getting ready to launch, and a myriad of baking bloggers inspiring bakers of all ages and stages, it is no wonder that people continue to look for the best bakeware and cake decorating products. PH came over all 'Mary Berry' and ventured behind the bakeware scenes to find out the latest developments.

T

here's something rather special about making and baking a cake for friends and family. Some people are natural bakers of course, while others follow recipes to the letter, but the end result is a definite pride, with people wanting to make their cakes and bakes in premium bakeware. Suppliers and manufacturers are therefore continuing to be innovative, with some interesting bakeware hitting the shelves in the run up to the festive season. Recipes aside, the key 'ingredient' it seems is to make baking as foolproof as possible. Alexandra Blyth, marketing manager UK and Ireland at Pyrex, explains: “The increase in cookery shows on TV, as well as inspiring social media personalities, have made baking very accessible and given the nation confidence to attempt their own star bakes at home." She continues: “To reflect the current demand, our Magic metal bakeware range has been designed to make baking easier than ever before. Each product in the collection has long easy-grip handles designed with oven mitted hands in mind, making it easy to get bakes in and out of the oven. “Crafted from light carbon-steel, with a super non-stick coating, and including all the classic shapes such as muffin trays and

Dressed for success The secret to a 'showstopper' of course, is a show topper! "We're seeing a trend for all things shiny and sparkly, particularly gold," says Holly Forder, product and marketing manager for Creative Party. "We've really focused on this trend in our new product development for 2017, both for everyday and Christmas product, and have launched gold glitter products across the ranges. Cookie cutters are still driving sales, making great impulse purchases especially when they're merchandised near the till, with consumers looking for trend items as well as standard staples." The company offers a ‘best in class’ range of Christmas cake decorations, with Holly advising: "Offering the good, better, best strategy is a great idea, with the concept translating particularly well for the Christmas season." At Wilton, Matthew Wilson, general manager, Europe, comments that to continue to grow the market and bring new consumers into the category, Wilton's new products have struck the balance by appealing to all skill levels. "These range from our Sugar Writer sanding sugar pen and Marvellous Meringues mix, to the more advanced Decorating Duo Tip Coupler set that helps create unique decorating effects piping with two tips at once." He observes that baking bloggers are also a keen source of inspiration, with bakers subsequently looking for the equipment to recreate the bakes as simply as possible. "The end results in cake decoration are extremely visual but it’s also about product knowledge," he points out. "Therefore retailers need to have a wide range of product on offer that links in with current trends such as buttercream and fondant, and to know what the products are used for." His advice to retailers is to set aside a small area to demo, and to have books on show if space permits. He also suggests making the most of supplier videos that demonstrate product usage, recipes and inspiration." States Matthew: "They can link products together to sell a solution to the customer.”

company's new Charms pans incorporate miniatures of bestsellers such as Chiffon and Crown. “Thanks to the properties of cast aluminium, the same details are created on the small cakes, with larger ones, with our new bundt pan storage bag providing a solution for safe storage." Adds Pauline: "Our new insulated aluminium baking sheets also ensure crisp, crunchy cookies!" What More too, is increasing its bakeware collections. The company recently launched a new brand, Baker & Salt. at Exclusively Housewares, which complements What More's unique PushPan and existing Wham ranges. company's own tools (a plus point being that it doesn’t trap food). Meanwhile Baker & Salt’s two-tone enamel range addresses kitchen aesthetics with a nod to retro. Explains national account manager Ben Wadeson: "Its practical assets include being stackable and versatile, working on hobs, including induction." He also points to consumer interest in products with provenance, when highlighting Baker & Salt bakeware: “People want to know where their food is from, so why not follow suit with what they are cooking on?” OXO Good Grips meanwhile, launched its first premium bakeware range at the end of last year. The bakeware is made in the USA, using heavy gauge aluminised steel with a two-layer non-stick coating. “These are created from commercial grade materials – the same as bakeware made for some well known commercial brands – but they are developed for the UK domestic market in terms of oven size and popular shapes,” explains OXO UK’s associate marketing director Tracy Carroll. She highlights that the range is built to last, doesn’t bend, and that the slightly raised areas on the surface encourage airflow for even baking. KitchenCraft's marketing director Clare Budgen reveals that the company's research points to an emerging demand for improvements to traditional baking items. "For example, in our Chicago Metallic collection, there isn't only a brownie pan but one which has a separating grid, meaning that each one has crunchy edges on all sides, rather than those baked around the edges of a traditional pan. There is also a gluten-free loaf pan, reflecting the trend for people taking a greater interest in their health. This includes an integrated pan to help support the bread as it bakes helping it to rise in the traditional way without the gluten ingredients," continues Clare. Above: Eddingtons' beech embossed rolling pin has a festive theme.

She says that a very positive aspect of the bakeware category is the broad age profile of its consumer. "It's encouraging how much of a younger consumer it now attracts," she states, "with social media playing a larger part. For example, Pinterest has had a positive impact, along with the growth of more masculine bakes such as bread and pastry. New product development too, has had a tremendously positive effect on growth, with bakeware a consistently solid performing category, with significant peaks at different times prompted by seasonality, trends and TV." Nevertheless, not all suppliers are as enthusiastic about the future of bakeware. Eddingtons' marketing manager, Adam Smith, says that the company is actually seeing a decline in general bakeware, and cupcakes in particular, but an increased interest in new and different items such as the company's beech embossed rolling pins, which he says are great for festive biscuits and royal icing. "In addition, we are also seeing an increased interest in cupcake sets, where customers buy into themes such as pirates and birthday parties etc. We're therefore constantly looking to bring innovation on trends to market, and are focusing our bakeware ranges to be co-ordinated with items that will add interest to the category." At Horwood, home to bakeware brands Judge, the James Martin endorsed Stellar range and Stellar Hard Anodised, the company is taking a practical overview of the sector, with bakeware currently accounting for 5% of its sales. "At the moment, the bakeware market is buoyant, fuelled by TV shows, but the market is over saturated with supply," believes marketing manager James Robinson. "The TV impact is slowing as, over the years, a loyal audience has invested in bakeware and there is only so much you can buy." However, he suggests that there is a trend to return to solid bakeware, away from silicone.

Microwave magic There's definitely a growing trend for baking in the microwave, with more companies looking to present bakers with everything they need for expert, no fuss results. "Microwave baking simply comes down to convenience, the quick fix, pressure on people’s time and lots more options available," says Geoff Hounslea, director, JWP. "The sheer variety and quality of the mixes now on offer means that people can create genuinely delicious bakes in a fraction of the time that it would take in a conventional oven, regardless of culinary skill." The company is launching a range of Betty Crocker microwave cake and brownie makers, with Geoff highlighting that they produce amazing results in minutes. "Just imagine making perfect brownies in just five minutes from start to finish!" he enthuses.

Licensing focus

With two pivotal points in the licensing industry calendar fast approaching – The UK Licensing Awards and Brand Licensing Europe – Progressive Housewares takes a closer look at the sector, highlighting some of the latest deals and high profile collaborations.

Above: Fearne Cotton’s new collaboration with Swan was unveiled at Exclusively Housewares and will hit retail in September.

Brand and deliver T he licensed housewares and tableware category has always been pretty buoyant, however the last couple of years have really seen it make its mark as a key part of any licensing programme. well as a growing number of celebrity tie-ups from across the spectrum. “Sales of licensed homewares and housewares product accounted for 12% of the market in 2015, equal to fashion and only marginally behind apparel and toys,” says Anna Knight, brand director of annual trade showcase, Brand Licensing Europe, which takes place October 10-12 at London's Olympia. “This is testament to its increasing importance at retail and the influx of creative brands becoming more involved in the sector.” Anna continues: “Over the last decade, celebrities such as Kylie, Holly Willoughby, Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson and Orla Kiely have all launched very successful housewares and homewares ranges, while heritage brands have been the basis of beautifully creative, design-led product.” And this growth has been recognised by the wider industry, too. John Lewis was praised for its work with LEON in this year’s Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards – picking up the Best Left: John Lewis’ exclusive collaboration with LEON is an example of mid and high-tier retailers expanding their licensed offering.

“Fearne is all about her own style” Swan showcased its new collaboration with presenter, DJ, cook book author and designer Fearne Cotton at Exclusively Housewares in June, with the range hitting retail in September. The products – which include the Fearne By Swan Stand Mixer, Food Processor, 3 in 1 Stick Blender, Hand Mixer, Kettle and Toaster – boast a colourful, retro feel combined with solid functionality. David Foulstone, marketing manager at Swan, says: "Fearne Cotton is the perfect endorsement for Swan kitchenware and small electricals as she is all about her own style. In 2015 we saw an Instagram post from Fearne which showed a Swan Retro kettle in the background and we thought this was the perfect time to approach her about a collaboration.” David continues: “Fearne is passionate about cooking; she is not pretending to be professional so she is easy to relate to, plus she is a young mum who wants to involve children in making things too. You could almost call her a British institution as she is so well loved – and her ten million social media followers shows that!”

Holly Wilson’s

From The Frontline

It’s been a non-stop couple of months. We finally opened the doors at Richard Dare at the beginning of June and it's been better than I could ever have hoped for. Taking over such an established business with such great heritage and a long standing loyal following felt terrifying and, even more so, the closer we got to opening. It was much more nerve wracking than opening Prep, but thankfully we have (on the whole!) been welcomed with open arms and at least this time, I had more of an idea what I was actually doing once I opened (kind of!)

Primrose summer F

or our opening weekend we had prosecco on the go at all times and we spent all day talking through the changes we had made, what would remain the same, what would change and what the locals wanted. Everyone had been waiting with baited breathe for us to reopen and they were so relieved that the shop was remaining as a kitchen shop and were thrilled with its new look, so they have vowed to keep on shopping with us. You can’t ask for more than that! We had a few weeks to get our heads around the new shop and then it was off to Exclusively. There was some newness from existing suppliers, which is always good to see. Most of our time was spent meeting new suppliers for Richard Dare. This was either the shop’s existing suppliers with whom I didn’t previously deal with or new suppliers that we thought would be good for the new store. I also got invited to attend the Product Judging day for the Excellence in Housewares Awards for the first time. It was great to see some product that I don’t normally see and also spot some product being put forward that I love from my own store. However,

the nicest part was spending time with other retailers. It was great to talk about how they were finding things, what was working or not and then discussing the product that we were looking at. It was an interesting day all round. So, the excitement of opening Richard Dare is now over and we are settling into understanding the store and our new customers, testing out our new products on them and seeing which of the existing stock they can’t live without. This is fun but also a real challenge. Primrose Hill is pretty affluent but a great deal of the locals up and leave during the school holidays so there have been days when it has felt like a ghost town. In their place however arrives the tourists! So for the summer we are working on making sure we have enough product that appeals to them that they can sling into their luggage going home without diluting the cook shop. These summer months are when the

new business rates feel at their worst so now, more than ever, you can’t just sit tight and wait for September; it’s all about finding a new customer to help you through. Next up are the September shows! For the first time Fatima and I are heading to Maison et Objet in Paris. I am so excited about it as I have wanted to go ever Left: Holly at Exclusively Housewares.

since I opened Prep but have never managed it. I hope to find some new suppliers to add freshness to both stores for the last quarter. It will then be a dash back to Top Drawer plus, it’s time to start planning how to deal with two shops at Christmas. I think the demands of my customers will be very different in both shops so I need to get Prep set up as I know what works there. Richard Dare will be a different matter but that’s all part of the fun!

Above left and below: A view of the new look Richard Dare.

Market focus

Kitchen garden

Above: Sarah Crees, company buyer, Garsons, is shown in the kitchenware department. Below: What's new from Joseph Joseph.

With an impeccable background spanning 136 years, and a fierce determination to stand out in garden centre housewares retail, family-owned Garsons is clearly at the top of its game. Over the past three years, the award winning company has invested over ÂŁ5million in the redevelopment of its two sites at Esher and Titchfield, to include its kitchenware area, with the focus on giving customers the best possible shopping experience. So what else is on the housewares horizon? PH popped into Garsons Esher in Surrey, to meet up with the company's buyer Sarah Crees.

G

arsons has been synonymous with growing produce since the late 19th century, having initially started out selling vegetables in 1871 when Queen Victoria was still on the throne. Over 13 decades later, and successfully operating in very different times, Garsons, started by George Henry Thompson, remains a successful family-run business, with md Ian Richardson - the fifth generation of the family - currently at the helm. (Other family directors, working in the business are Ian's brother Alan, their father Derek, Peter Thompson, his daughter Clare James and his nephew Ben Thompson. All are direct descendants of George). A programme of prudent re-investment and business development has kept the company constantly moving forward over the years. Its long heritage is at the heart of the business, with the current directors successfully taking the company into the 21st century. Below: Kilner jars are among the winners in the kitchenware department.

The rebuilding and redevelopment of the retail space at Esher two years ago, to include kitchenware, is a testament to that, as is the purpose-built retail operation at Garsons’ second site in Titchfield, Hampshire, which was opened last November. Finding alternatives to the high street offer is a key factor when sourcing product, and in charge of central buying for both sites is Sarah Crees, who joined Garsons 15 years ago, having previously worked at Jerry's Home Store.

Her remit is a challenging one by anyone's standards, covering everything from kitchenware and gifts to home fragrance and interiors, fashion accessories, greeting cards, stationery, books and toys. The small kitchenware department, introduced some 20 years ago, has trebled in size, with early suppliers including Dexam and Maxwell & Williams. Today, visitors will also find leading brands such as Le Creuset, Joseph Joseph, KitchenCraft, LSA International, Creative Tops and Portmeirion Group, with Sarah striving to take the department into different areas. "Originally, we only sold kitchen gadgets and tableware, but today we invest much more in kitchen giftware and 'stand out' statement pieces," she explains. "Most products come gift boxed nowadays, meaning that kitchenware is an important extension of our gift department, with the packaging helping to drive the purchase." Although Garsons still offers

standard kitchenware products, Sarah is also on a mission to try and source products that people can't find in a department store or high street cookware shop. "With more and more people choosing to eat healthily, it has created a demand for everything from ovenware to bakeware and much more besides," she states. "Fortunately, the space we can devote to kitchenware has increased since the redevelopment, allowing us to stock more brands and giving us more creative scope when it comes to display." TV cookery programmes are, of course, extremely influential, with KitchenCraft's Paul Hollywood range of champagne coloured bakeware a good example. "People really do want to buy into the brands of celebrity chefs, and also seem to crave the latest kitchen gadgets that the TV chefs use on their shows," Sarah points out. "Far from putting them away in a kitchen cupboard or drawer, they really want to show them off." She says that because Garsons isn't an average garden centre, she tries to embrace as many new elements as she can, sourcing at shows such as Exclusively Housewares, Spring Fair, Autumn Fair and Home & Gift in Harrogate. "My office is stacked floor to ceiling with brochures and I'm very open minded when it comes to sourcing. I see the buying team as 'seekers of the unfound'!" she smiles. Naturally trends come and go in kitchenware, but currently there seems to be an insatiable thirst for glassware that taps into the vibe for gin and prosecco, along with stemless wine glasses. "The gin story in particular has been amazing for us," Sarah confirms. With gift purchases in mind, the kitchenware department's best sellers

also include Creative Tops' Alice in Wonderland collection. "It's very much about the products telling a story," explains Sarah. She is also keen to differentiate Garsons by buying into the whole spectrum of products from brands such as Sara Miller London - whose designs now feature on a range from Portmeirion Group - in order to create a different sort of 'story' for customers. "We like to put together around six products such as ceramics, a candle, a reed diffuser, stationery, gift bags and a greeting card. It adds to the uniqueness and authenticity of the brand and to what we offer as a retailer." With so much on offer at the garden centre, unsurprisingly, there's no 'typical' Garsons shopper. Instead, one, two or even three generations of families often come in together and enjoy spending the day there. Although initial Christmas merchandise per se will go in store in September, the company's Christmas brochure will be out at the end of October, with a festive video 'walk through' also promoting what's in store on the company's website. "We're hoping to feature Kilner jars in the brochure, which we sell in the Farm Shop as well as in the kitchenware department," Sarah confirms. "They're hugely popular with customers who like to make their own handmade jams, marmalades and chutneys, either for themselves or as gifts, so they tie in very well with our Pick Your Own farm." In the meantime, Sarah and her team will, as always, be looking to

make shopping as easy as possible at Garsons. "Obviously we have regular shoppers, so we do our best to keep everything looking and feeling new and fresh."
