BIG LOVE COLLECTION
CELEBRATE EVERY DISH
WELCOME
Ihope, having survived another challenging year, you all had a restful Christmas break, (which already feels a lifetime ago) and are ready for the year ahead, which, for many of us, begins with a trip to Birmingham for Spring Fair, followed by Frankfurt for Ambiente.
Statistically, 2024 saw a somewhat disappointing end, with footfall down 2.2% overall in the UK, compared to 2023. The BRC termed December as ‘drab’ and ‘lacklustre’. 2024 was the second year in a row where footfall has been in decline.
Ambiente and Spring Fair, as you will see in our previews in this issue.
Director of Dining Ambiente, Thomas Kastl, has also told us about the plans in place for the show this year, making it an unmissable event for housewares buyers once again.
I was lucky enough to visit Harrods at the end of last year, to see its pop-up Winter Boutique with Stanley, a great demonstration of what can be achieved to create theatre in-store when retailers work together with brands. Read more about it on page 24.

Anecdotally, however, things looked a little brighter, with many of the UK’s housewares retailers reporting a busy end to the year. Many indies we spoke to over the festive period were seeing busy shops and some of the major retailers, like Next, have already reported strong sales at year-end.
Sadly there have been some casualties this year, and we were saddened to hear that Dinghams cookshop in Salisbury has made the difficult decision to close next month.
As is tradition in our first issue of the year, we have gathered our trade associations, along with some key retailers and suppliers to find out the state of the nation in the housewares industry.
As we look ahead to 2025, there is certainly plenty to be excited about. Suppliers are readying exciting ranges to present at
We also caught up with the group ceo and co-owner of Søstrene Grene, Mikkel Grene, to find out about the retailer’s ambitious expansion plans in the UK and its story so far.
Elsewhere in the issue, we launch a new market focus, looking into the growing strength of water and hydration products. We also take a look at the tea and coffee sector, including its latest trends and innovations.
The Progressive Housewares team is hugely looking forward to seeing many of you in Frankfurt and Birmingham in the coming weeks. Please do get in touch if you’d like to book in a meeting and we very much hope to see you there.

Dinghams set to close
Salisbury-based cookshop, Dinghams, has made the difficult decision to close its doors next month.
In a statement on Facebook, the team said: “It is with a heavy heart that we share some difficult news with all of you. After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the heartbreaking decision to close Dinghams. This is not a decision we’ve taken lightly and we wanted to personally explain the reasons behind this difficult choice.
“For over 40 years, Dinghams has been more than just a business; it has been a place where we’ve had the privilege to serve our wonderful customers, build lasting relationships and be a part of the fabric of this community. From our cosy café to the carefully curated shop, we’ve strived to create a space that people could enjoy, relax and feel welcome in.
“However, over the past few years, we’ve faced a number of significant challenges. Rising costs, changes in consumer habits and external economic pressures have made it increasingly difficult to maintain the level of service and quality you’ve come to expect from us. Despite our best efforts to adapt and find solutions, the
Ambiente enhances hospitality programme
Ambiente 2025 is further expanding the growth area of hospitality and emphasising its design expertise with special presentations such as The Lounge.
For the upcoming show, Ambiente is reorganising its offering for commercial bulk buyers in the hospitality industry and expanding its hospitality portfolio. The fringe programme, with the Hospitality Academy, Hotelier Day and themed tours, will enhance the range with inspiration and information.
With the reorganised Special Interest Hospitality, commercial buyers are pointed in the direction of companies with expertise in equipping hotels and resorts, restaurants and caterers, cruise ships, lounges and other hospitality venues.
In addition to the range for the gastronomy and hotel industry in Hall 11.0, previously known as HoReCa, the Special
combination of these pressures has made it unsustainable for us to continue operating as an independent business.
“Our final day of operation will be 28 February, and we are committed to closing in a way that is respectful to all those who have supported us.
”While this is an incredibly sad moment for us, we want to express our deep gratitude to each and every one of you. It’s because of your support – whether through shopping with us, enjoying a meal in our café, or simply spreading the word about what we do – that we’ve been able to grow and thrive for as long as we have.
“It has been an unforgettable experience, and we will always be grateful for the support.
With deepest appreciation,
The Dinghams team.”
Interest Hospitality also encompasses, as before, suppliers from other dining halls with product lines for the hospitality industry.
From the Ambiente Living area, exhibitors in the interior design Hall 3.1 will complement the range. For the first time, exhibitors from the Office Design & Solutions section at Ambiente Working in Hall 3.1 will top off the comprehensive portfolio for the hospitality industry.
With themed tours across the Ambiente Dining halls, a target group-specific lecture programme on Hoteliers’ Day on 10 February and the special interests of hospitality and contract business, the trade fair addresses professional hosts, purchasing decisionmakers and project developers in the industry.
The lectures cover topics such as sustainability, design and trends in the hotel industry and the emotionalisation of the
guest experience. Curated special presentations will focus on kitchen tools, as well as an outlook onto the guest room of the future.
The focus of the Hospitality Academy, formerly known as the HoReCa Academy, in the north foyer of Hall 11.0 is on current trends, concepts, best practices and practical tips from renowned experts.
The Inspired Home Show moves to midweek pattern in 2026
The International Housewares Association has announced that its 2026 The Inspired Home Show will shift to a new midweek pattern.
Following a survey of participants to find the best scenario to meet their needs, the 2026 show will now run Tuesday, 10 March – Thursday, 12 March, rather than the Sunday – Tuesday pattern that the upcoming 2025 show will follow.
“The decision to move the show to a Tuesday – Thursday schedule was made after polling the industry and having conversations with key constituents to determine the most desirable day pattern,” said International Housewares Association president and ceo, Derek Miller.
“It was clear that there has been a shift in our culture and workforce that directly impacts when we must come to market.”
The evolution to the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday pattern best positions the show to meet the industry’s evolving needs and expectations. The 2025 show will keep the Sunday –Tuesday pattern, running Sunday, 2 March – Tuesday, 4 March
Dates for the following three years are:
10 – 12 March, 2026
9 – 11 March, 2027
7 – 9 March, 2028
Stats from polling showed that 68% of exhibitors and 84% of key retailers desired the shift or found it acceptable.
Other recent efforts to accommodate the evolving needs of participants include unifying the show into two buildings and changing from a four-day to a three-day pattern during the 2024 show.

Cookware Sustainability Alliance sues Minnesota
The Cookware Sustainability Alliance (CSA) has sued in Minnesota to challenge a ban on the sale of nonstick cookware.
This ban is part of a new Minnesota law – known locally as ‘Amara’s Law – that included cookware with a range of other consumer product categories being newly regulated because of growing PFAS concerns.
The CSA is asking a federal court in Minnesota for a preliminary injunction of the Minnesota law barring the sale of cookware containing fluoropolymers, which are the chemical coating on pans commonly known as nonstick cookware.
Although the law defines the fluoropolymers used in cookware as PFAS, they are fundamentally different compounds from the chemicals that have motivated concerns.
The legal challenge will proceed on three tracks:
• First the CSA has asked the federal court to prevent enforcement of the law as applied to nonstick cookware because the law violates the US constitution’s prohibition on individual states regulating interstate commerce.
• Second, the CSA has lodged additional constitutional challenges to the statute, which we will ask the judge to resolve on a non-emergency timetable.
• Third, on a parallel track with its litigation, the CSA has oMered to work cooperatively with the State to secure an exemption for fluoropolymer coated nonstick cookware because of their low-risk profile.
Sustainability trends at Ambiente’s Talents programme
‘Think local, act sustainable’ is the approach of young designers reflected in the Talent promotional programme at Ambiente this year.
The show, which runs from 7 to 11 February 2025, hosts 28 young design talents from 11 countries in hall 3.1. In 2025, participants will travel to Frankfurt from countries including Finalnd, Japan, Poland, Sweden and the US.
One example is Laura van de Wijdeven from the Netherlands, who has developed a ceramic raw material from eggshells that can be composted at the end of its life and used to create soils or floor tiles. At Talents, she will be presenting a selection of the decorative objects that she has created using ‘eggshell ceramics’.
Zi-Yu Elaine Chou from Taiwan combines the traditional tea ceremony with ecological responsibility: her SADOU tea table uses an innovative method to utilise excess brewing water for the growth of hydroponic plants. At the same time, the tea waste is dried and re-used for environmentally friendly household cleaning, among other things.
The Interior Lifestyle Award Tokyo brings designer Hana Mitsui to Talents. Hana transforms traditional Japanese textile art into modern designs for a contemporary lifestyle. She focuses on upcycling, making her creations particularly resource-friendly.
For the Talents programme, Messe Frankfurt specifically promotes newcomers from all over the world and cooperates with international design awards and initiatives such as the German Design Graduates.

BHETA lobbies on inheritance tax for familyowned businesses
Alongside the outcry from the farming community and family-owned high street businesses over the changes to Business Property Relief (BPR), announced in the UK autumn budget 2024, BHETA is also lobbying on behalf of the UK’s many family-owned manufacturing businesses, which are similarly affected.
Historically, BPR allowed eligible business property to be exempt from Inheritance Tax (IHT). However, the new rules pose a threat to family-owned UK manufacturers. BHETA is providing template MP lobbying packs to suppliers caught by the Government’s proposals, in support of the lead taken by Family Business UK (FBUK).
Will Jones, chief operating officer, said: “Family-run businesses account for 90% of private sector firms and employ 14 million people. Each year, over 85,000 of them will transition ownership to the next generation (Source: FBUK).
“Business Property Relief (BPR) has been essential in enabling these companies to plan, giving owners the assurance to focus on growth and compete on a global scale. Under the new rules, a cap of £1 million will apply to the assets eligible for 100% inheritance tax (IHT) relief. Any value exceeding this threshold will only receive 50% relief. Business assets that were previously fully exempt under inheritance tax relief will now face an effective 20% tax when transferred to the next generation.
“The changes to Business Property Relief (BPR) announced in the budget will hit family businesses hard and BHETA urges all members to get involved and contact local MPs. 87% of BHETA members are concerned about the recent changes to taxes and national insurance and these changes will be potentially disastrous for family businesses.”

Blisshome continues to combine stylish and innovative ideas with superb manufacturing quality and some great brand associations. It’s brilliant to see the company join BHETA.”

Retail’s next chapter in 2025
challenging 2024 and examines what lies ahead for independent retailers in 2025.
Independent retailers have weathered one of their most testing years in recent memory. Throughout 2024, our members have faced multiple headwinds, from changing consumer behaviour, to persistent economic uncertainties that have fundamentally impacted trading conditions.
The challenges have been significant. Consumer spending on non-food items has declined markedly, while footfall problems and fragile consumer confidence have affected high streets nationwide. Despite inflation coming under control, the slow decline in interest rates has continued to impact both business and consumer spending.
Competition has intensified, with large chains implementing deeper and longer discount periods. The emergence of ultra-fast fashion retailers like Shein and Temu, has created additional pressure on margins, while deflation on non-food items has further squeezed profits.
Perhaps most concerning has been the rise in retail crime. Our latest survey reveals that 78.79% of businesses report increased frequency or severity of theft incidents. This isn't just about lost stock - it represents a genuine threat to the wellbeing of our retailers and their staff.
The scale of the challenge is stark. Research from PwC shows 6,945 outlets closed in 2024 - equating to 38 store closures per day, up from 36 per day from 2023. While new store openings rose modestly to 4,661, averaging 25 openings daily, the net loss of high street presence remains concerning.
Looking ahead to 2025, new challenges emerge. Medium-sized retailers face significant increases in employment costs, while thousands of smaller retailers will be hit with higher business rates as relief drops from 75% to 40%. These aren't just statisticsthey represent real pressures on real businesses.
However, I see genuine reasons for optimism. Wages are set to rise faster than inflation, which should boost consumer spending power. Both inflation and interest rates should continue to fall, helping to rebuild the consumer confidence that's so vital for our sector.
BIRA to participate in treasury discussions on business rates reform
BIRA’s invitation to participate in the discussions marks a significant step forward in the association’s campaign to reduce the rates burden on indies. The invitation follows the government’s recently published discussion paper on reforming business rates, released in the wake of the Autumn Statement.
The consultation process, running until March 2025, will help shape reforms set to be announced in the 2025 Autumn Statement implemented from April 2026. The talks come at a critical time for independent retailers, following October’s Autumn Statement which announced a reduction in business rates relief from 75% to 40% (capped at £110k) from April 2025, adding further pressure to an already challenging trading environment.
Andrew Goodacre, ceo of BIRA, said: “We have been lobbying for meaningful business rates reform for many years, with the ultimate aim of permanently reducing the rates burden on independent retailers. It is extremely positive that BIRA will play a prominent role in these discussions, ensuring our members’ voices are heard at the highest level.”
The circular economy presents growing opportunities for independent retailers. As consumers become increasingly conscious of sustainability, our members' ability to offer personal service and expert knowledge positions them perfectly to capitalise on this trend.
Independent retailers have always succeeded through adaptability and resilience. These qualities will be more important than ever in 2025. Those who can maintain their agility while staying true to their core values of personal service and community connection, will find opportunities even in challenging conditions.
BIRA, which works with over 6,000 independent retailers of all sizes across the UK, has consistently highlighted the need for a fairer business rates system. This consultation process provides a genuine opportunity to influence long-term reform of a system that has long been criticised by the independent retail sector.
Andrew added: “We understand the importance of these discussions to our members and will keep them fully informed throughout the consultation process. This is a real chance to shape a rates system that better serves independent retailers and our high streets.”

GUEST COLUMNIST Andy Johnston
THE EVOLUTION OF A COOKSHOP
Andy Johnston, owner of The Kitchen Range Cookshop looks back over his 30-year career as a housewares retailer in the first of Progressive Housewares’ guest column series.
My first job after school was a gas service engineer. In 1994 British Gas closed all showrooms and I decided to open up one of my own in Market Harborough. The £11,500 per annum payment does not seem much now, but in 1994 it was quite a commitment, especially as I had to put my family home up as security
This new venture went reasonably well and after 18 months, I decided to earn extra sales by displaying cookware and that was the start of ‘The Cookshop’.
In 1998, I took over a cook shop in Oakham, which gave me access to more suppliers, notably WMF, the German cookware company, who became a major supplier with gadgets, cutlery and pans.
At the start of the millennium, the appearance of Jamie Oliver on TV had a huge impact on the younger generation, who became more interested in cooking and would buy cookware for themselves. They invested in good quality knives and granite pestle and mortars, which in those days were difficult to source, so I began to buy from a Chinese wholesaler in Birmingham and would pick them up in my van to sell in the shop.
was selling electricals i.e. Dualit and KitchenAid. However it has been very difficult to compete with online sales recently.
In 2014 we did begin a website, but found it very difficult to run alongside the shop, so we decided to stick with bricks and mortar sales and this controversial decision has worked well.
We are proud to have won numerous awards. My daughter, Jade has been creating the window displays for over 20 years and they prove to be very popular.
By 2014, we closed both shops in Oakham because of dwindling footfall, to concentrate on our two shops in Market Harborough.
2024 culminated in us winning the Excellence in Housewares Award for the Independent Cookshop of the Year, which we were very honoured to receive. ‘‘ ’’
Also at this time, my two daughters Jade and Ella joined the business. Jade joined me in the cookshop and Ella started a new venture, a gift shop in Oakham.
Due to the continuing popularity of home cooking, I decided to concentrate on cookware and stopped selling range cookers. One of the biggest phases of our business
By 2016, when we decided to stop retailing electrical goods, the remainder of stock was selling well enough to make up the shortfall. Another avenue of income was a cafe in one of the shops. We ran it for several years and it was very popular, but after the pandemic it never really recovered, so it closed in 2021.
We were grateful to the government grants and furlough scheme to keep us going during that time and post-lockdown, people have decided to cook more at home and so need
retail unit next to our 5 Church Street premises, which we joined into one large unit, combining the cookshop and gift shop.
After a three-month shop fit, we were very pleased with the showroom, on two floors.
On our opening day, Keith Brymer Jones gave a successful display of throwing pots.
We have a dedicated three metre run of Le Creuset fixtures, which, along with their marketing has made them our top supplier. Other suppliers performing well are Robert Welch, Eddingtons, Ulster Weavers and CKS.
The first two years have been encouraging. Jade and I run the cookshop and Ella manages the gift shop. 2024 culminated in us winning the Excellence in Housewares Award for the Independent Cookshop of the Year, which we were very honoured to receive.
One of the downsides to retailing now is the escalation of shoplifting. I myself have been a victim, having challenged a shoplifter recently, I was physically assaulted. Luckily the culprit was apprehended. Our local council has initiated a scheme for retailers to join to combat theft and anti-social behaviour.
I have really enjoyed my journey through retailing and look forward to a few more years before I retire.
pop-up into its demonstration kitchen area on the third floor.
The pop-up showcased three exclusive Stanley colours for Harrods – Cypress,
store, we wanted to do exclusives, but we never thought we could commit to the minimums. As we’re just one store, it can be really difficult to secure exclusives in that way
promote it as much as possible.”
1.5m high Stanley Quenchers in the three new colours adorned the back wall of the Stanley winter boutique, while customers were able to
take advantage of a personalised engraving service in-store and enjoy barista-made beverages while they waited for their Quencher to be engraved. To complete the experience, the viral Quencher was presented in a special gift box, available only in Harrods.
“It’s a really exciting pop-up,” enthuses Margaret. “We always like to do some retail theatre in this space and we really try to elevate it as much as possible.
“The brands we work with always come up with really interesting ways to showcase products and we create that space for them to launch. I think Stanley is probably the most interactive pop-up we’ve done thus far and obviously Christmas is quite a nice time to do it.”
The demo kitchen enables Harrods to elevate brands within the housewares department. “We usually give the demo area out to brands for two weeks,” says Margaret. “If there’s an exception, we might make it a month. We can then use Maisie, our chef, to demo items in the kitchen area. In the past we’ve showcased Fissler and Disney.” Harrods supports the retail theatre with a range of marketing initiatives. Margaret outlines: “All these events are advertised on our news and events page online. And then if we can, we’ll also do an online story piece on it as well.”
first saw it, it was still more the camping style products. But then I started to see loads of Quenchers on TikTok and Instagram We reached out to Burton McCall. It was still really early but they said they could probably get us a few units for Christmas.
“At that point, Lyn and I were cautious, but
Harrods buyer, Lyn Walsh furthers: “We also have the area advertised on our escalators and on our screens to draw footfall in. I think Stanley will be the biggest one where people will interact. It’s completely different to any we’ve done before. I’m sure people will take selfies with the big Quenchers in the background and news will spread quickly about the area.”
approved by Stanley for us to be able to work with them. The brand has changed its audience completely in recent years and it wants to partner with retailers who also target that same audience.
“Stanley has a rich heritage and has been established since 1913. It was William Stanley who invented steel vacuum bottles and created a brand that was trusted and became iconic. But until recently that brand was associated with camping and fishing and outdoors pursuits. The marketing team has now bought a new product range to a new audience of young people and the branding, along with the quality of the products has taken off in a big way.”
Within the Stanley pop-up, video screens played Stanley content, while the area was signposted with lamp-post style signs as customers walk through the department. Harrods buyers, Margaret and Lyn worked closely with Stanley UK distributor, Burton McCall to create the concept for the Stanley winter boutique pop-up following Harrods’ huge success when the Quencher launched for Christmas 2023. Margaret remembers: “We bought this product in last Christmas because there was a trend for it. When we
then we decided to take everything they had and see how it did. It sold out before we even got it into the store. We sold out in one day of all the units we took.
“So it was a very last minute addition last year, but it’s had a big impact on our overall trade. It’s quite interesting how much it has taken off. It probably helps that not that many retailers stock it.”
The key partners for Stanley in the UK include Harrods, Next, John Lewis, Selfridges, Urban Outfitters and Footasylum. Mohamed Hajat, head of sales at Burton McCall explains: “Retailers have to be
The Harrods collaboration is a clear example of how Stanley works with its retail partners to elevate the brand. Mohamed continues: “Stanley wants to work with retailers who can give a commitment of space. They want to create hype accounts to spend in marketing and execute a moment which then creates a halo effect throughout the world. That’s exactly what we’ve done with Harrods here.” Despite, or perhaps because of, the limited retail partners, Stanley is proving to be a huge strength for Burton McCall and has quadrupled the company’s sales. Not only that, but it has invigorated the sector as a whole.
“Stanley has changed the way we hydrate,” exclaims Mohamed.
“While we were perhaps having the odd glass of water during the day previously, those who have a Stanley on their desk or in their car are now consuming two or three Quenchers, which each hold 1.2l of water. It’s a game changer and there’s plenty more to come.
“The brand will launch 200 new products in 2025, starting with the new Cross Bottle, which features a strap to enable you to take your Stanley with you over your shoulder wherever you go.”
Housewares trade bodies, retailers and suppliers reflect on the year that was in 2024 and their highlights of the year, while also looking ahead to 2025 and the challenges and opportunities which are likely to be presented to the industry.
THE
QUESTIONS
in the housewares industry in 2024 and what has been the impact?
2. What has been the highlight of the year, either for your business, or the industry as a whole?
affecting the home and garden sector have been brought to the table by members and then taken to campaign level by BHETA, talking direct to Government and marshalling and enabling support at constituency level.
3. What do you expect to be the biggest challenge and the biggest opportunity in 2025?
“While Exclusively remains as popular as ever and retailer events have figured largely in the BHETA calendar, these ‘stronger together’ campaigns (and associated advisory webinars) have captured the imagination.
“More positive consumer sentiment is a factor with a hope of improving disposable income and spend in key markets such as the EU and Japan. This reflects a belief that some of the worst economic impacts of global conflicts may show signs of lessening in 2025.
“The US is also cited as an opportunity, although that must be caveated with the yet (at time of writing) unknown actuality of Trump’s protectionist talk about tariffs.
Will Jones, chief operating officer, BHETA
“As usual at this time of year, BHETA has just carried out its annual member survey. While the overall mood is slightly more optimistic than at this point in 2024, some potential threats to business were clear, with over 80% of respondents registering major or moderate concerns about three issues:
• Competition from overseas suppliers selling direct to consumers while avoiding the payment of duty – the so-called ‘small parcels’ phenomenon.
• The impact of the recent budget in terms of increased business taxes and national insurance.
• Packaging regulations, packaging tax and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
“So, it is perhaps not surprising that one of the most persuasive reasons for suppliers joining BHETA – alongside networking and advice – has been the association’s success lobbying on the key issues of the day.
“BHETA is good at lobbying – saving members collectively around £4.1 million to date across all sectors. But a massive factor this year is how many legislative issues
“Issues such as EPR, small parcel imports, bladed articles retailing, product safety and related legislation – and now the inheritance tax implications for family businesses, will remain on the agenda for 2025.
“Returning to the survey, most respondents felt there is unlikely to be any great change in sales prospects for 2025, although export bucked this trend. Almost 60% forecasted an increase in orders from overseas next year. In fact, 21% of members are predicting such increases could be significant.
Richard
“With this in mind, it is especially timely that BHETA has ramped up the extent and variety of experience in its Export Committee, with a view to majoring on export in 2025. The committee’s remit is to encourage and enable members to develop overseas sales whether as a new income stream or building on existing business.
“In ‘interesting’ times, BHETA is seeing supplier companies engage with its collective resources – and has welcomed 28 new members in 2024.”
Barker, director, Cilla & Camilla
“Overall, the autumn budget will make life more challenging for us. The reduction in business rates discount will increase our costs by around £20k per annum; employers NI will add around £5k and while I am ideologically supportive of an increase in the National Living Wage, the increase to £12.21 effectively means that, in order to maintain differentials, we are pushed into offering all our staff a 7% wage rise - around £40k per annum.
“In the short to medium term, I can see little positive in the budget for independent retailers. Beyond the operating cost increases, changes to CGT mean that disposing of our business, as a traditional exit strategy, is less attractive.
“For the foreseeable future, I cannot see these increased costs being met by sales growth. We are fortunate in that we have a strong business which can withstand some increased pressure but, as a minimum, I expect to find ways to reduce staff hours to ease the pain.
“I hope that focus on business rates will lead a genuine root and branch review of this whole area of taxation, but I am not hopeful. Successive governments have failed to address the inequalities in the system.”
David Conduit, purchasing director, Harts of Stur
“The change of government, the ensuing budget, and the nervousness, caution and drop in disposable income felt by almost all of the buying public have been the biggest changes. Confidence seems very low.
“For us, the highlight last year has been the progress of a shop. Online trading has been very hard work and largely flat all year, as I understand it for almost all online retailers. At the same time, we have seen a surge in in-store traffic and spend, with customers looking to re-engage with the more immersive shop experience. It is very encouraging.
“The biggest challenge for the year ahead will be somehow staying on a growth trajectory with the lower confidence and spending power of the consumer, coupled with the increases in costs incurred because
Andrew Goodacre, ceo, BIRA
of the moronic, short sighted, ideological and crippling budget (budget for growth? This budget might stop the weeds growing). I can only guess that this will stifle much brand and new product development for many suppliers, so exciting launches and innovation will be at a premium.
“The opportunities will come by being in a strong, wholly owned position where we survive this onslaught, as some retailers won't, so we can capitalise later in the year. This will undoubtedly be coupled with range rationalisation, productivity targets increasing for maximum staff efficiency and a reexamination of all overheads - a good strategy for any year, but all the more important with the financial pressures the next year is likely to bring.”
Jenny Stewart, commercial director, Ultimate Products
“2024 has seen a marked increase in consumer concern around sustainability While this is something the trade has been increasingly focused on, we are now noticing end consumers considering sustainability in their purchase decision. We are responding to this by reducing waste in both our packaging and product, across product divisions. We are also increasing our use of FSC and recycled materials in new cookware to provide a range of options for the consumer.
Show in November, to exhibiting at trade shows throughout the year, Salter has made truly its mark as the Experts in Everyday.
“It was fantastic for our team to see the Salter rebrand roll out last year. With the new style guide now filling shelves, it has been amazing to see our vision for a new Salter come to life. Feedback from customers and consumers has been incredible and we feel that our refreshed brand values are making their way into consumer perception. From showing off our new look at Good Food
“As we move into 2025, we are anticipating lots of exciting changes and developments. We cannot wait to launch our Beldray rebrand, which brings bright core colours and a lot of fun. The new Beldray will give us an opportunity to engage with the consumer at a brand level instead of just a product basis, which gives us huge scope for 2025. A very exciting year ahead for team UP.”
“The most significant change in the housewares industry in 2024 has been the shift in consumer purchasing behaviour amidst economic pressures. We've seen customers becoming increasingly value-conscious, leading to longer and deeper discount periods across the sector. This has particularly impacted independent retailers who haven't been able to compete with larger chains on price points.
“The rise of online marketplaces has also created additional pressure on margins, forcing many independent housewares retailers to adapt their business models and focus on service quality and specialised product offerings to remain competitive
“Despite the challenges, a notable highlight has been the resilience shown by indies in adapting to changing market conditions. Many of our members have successfully embraced the growing trend towards sustainable and long-lasting homeware products, meeting the increasing consumer demand for quality over disposable items. This shift has allowed indies to differentiate themselves from mass-market competitors and build stronger connections with local communities
“Looking ahead to 2025, the reduction in business rates relief from 75% to 40% presents a significant challenge for smaller retailers. However, we see substantial opportunities in the growing circular economy and the increasing consumer preference for sustainable housewares. With wages expected to rise faster than inflation and interest rates predicted to fall, we anticipate improved consumer confidence. The key to success will be for independent retailers to leverage their unique strengths – personal service, product expertise and community connections – while adapting to evolving consumer preferences for sustainable and durable home products.”
Claire Whalley-Livesey, managing director, Meyer Group
“In 2024, the housewares industry saw several significant shifts. One of the most notable changes is the continued pressure on consumers’ disposable incomes. Despite inflation now easing, many remain cautious about spending. However, the easing of inflation is expected to provide some relief, as it could gradually improve consumer confidence and willingness to spend.
“At the same time, the housing market recovery, though positive overall, faces headwinds due to persistently high mortgage rates. This has created a knock-on negative effect on the housewares industry, as fewer people are buying homes or making significant moves. Consequently, demand for items like home improvement products, furniture and other housewares is suppressed
“Another major change was the disruption caused by retailers ‘re-setting’ strategies. In response to suppressed consumer demand, many are reevaluating their inventory management, pricing strategies and sales channels. This has led to some volatility in the market. While these adjustments may bring about innovation in the long run, they have also introduced a level of uncertainty and change within the industry.
“The highlight of the year for Meyer Group has been the continued success and growth of our Prestige and Circulon brands, driven by our focus on innovation. Despite the challenging consumer environment, we are incredibly proud to report double-digit year-on-year growth for both brands.
“In 2025, we anticipate that the biggest challenge will be navigating the regulatory changes coming from Europe, particularly those related to PFAS. As these regulations become more stringent, there will be an increased need for compliance and adaptation. Managing these changes will require agility, collaboration with regulatory bodies and a proactive approach to ensure we continue to meet both legal requirements and consumer expectations.
“On the other hand, the biggest opportunity in 2025 lies in driving greater efficiency within our business through the adoption of AI-led process automation. By leveraging AI, we aim to streamline operations, enhance decision-making and improve productivity. Additionally, we are excited about a major new product development launch from Circulon.”
Emma Kelly, commercial director, Bents
“One area which saw a big change in 2024 is electricals, with the trend for larger items such as air fryers definitely slowing. It is something we anticipated, so started to buy in more decorative, branded electricals such as Cath Kidston kettles, which have helped in this area.
“We saw a big increase in demand for tablescaping; textiles, serveware, decorative items. People wanting products for entertainment and socialising, which has been really positive for our cook shop.
“I think the main highlight for our cook shop has got to be winning ‘Best Garden Centre Retailer of Housewares’ at the 2024 Excellence in Housewares Awards. It was an incredible achievement and one which we were very proud of. Housewares is an increasingly competitive marketplace with fast moving trends, so the award was a brilliant recognition of our team and a great way to thank them.
“One of the biggest challenges we face in 2025 is change and how to plan for it, but we’ve got a fantastic team, from our buyers - who are always looking out for new products and growing trends - to our colleagues on the shop floor who deliver a fantastic customer experience. With regards to opportunities, we think there will be two stand outs for 2025; hydration (flasks, water bottles, anything portable to help keep people hydrated) and cleaning, so a real focus on smaller, innovative products.”
Jayne OÊDonnell, head of UK independent sales, Lifetime Brands
“Reflecting on the continued trend of rising inflation and the cost-of-living crisis, it’s perhaps a lack of change that has had the biggest impact. We know our partners have felt this with obvious challenges surrounding consumer demand and footfall, however there is still both a consumer desire and need for cook and dine products. We see this reflected on social media on a huge scale.
“Consumers are making more considered purchases – with a buy once buy smart mentality. With the likes of KitchenAid, S’well, MasterClass, La Cafetière and Mikasa, we are well positioned to support with products that consumers want and need and that go the distance.
“As an area of growth, ecommerce holds real importance for our independent retailers, a definite change in recent years. As a result, our communications surrounding the availability of our comprehensive bank of ecommerce assets has ramped up.
“Despite the challenges, we have so many highlight moments. We’ve had a stream of successful trade shows, showroom and instore customer events to support new product launches. It’s also been fabulous to see our newest collections profiled instore. The icing on the cake was Mikasa x Tipperleyhill being crowned Top of the Table at the Excellence in Housewares
“A final highlight has to be working with our customers. We can feel the industry is alive and kicking, despite ongoing challenges. We’re striving head and heart first alongside our partners and will continue to support them in every way we can.
“We anticipate that the market will continue to present obstacles. We know we need to respond and adapt and that’s where the opportunities lie. Consumers want newness and we will continue to offer this. January will see us preview a new range of tools and gadgets under the KitchenAid brand with brand storytelling that celebrates the brand in a big way – all to be unveiled at Ambiente. Plus we have newness within MasterClass, La Cafetière, Mikasa and S’well.”
“A standout moment was announcing our new partnership with Jamie Oliver and a new serveware and dinnerware collection. We almost burst keeping this big secret, we can still feel the buzz the announcement created at Exclusively.
TO THE TABLE
With Big Love, every meal becomes a chance to celebrate” says Matthew Canwell, Lifetime’s president international.
“The collection itself is a catalyst for inspiration within the home. We know that food is so much more than ingredients on a plate. It's the people you welcome around your table, the love and care you put into making delicious food, and the good times you share. Together with Jamie, we're beyond proud of this range.”
Lifetime Brands has joined forces with Jamie Oliver. The partnership heralds the launch of a new dinnerware and serveware collection curated by and named after Jamie’s personal sign-off. ‘Big Love’ embodies the chef's passion for getting loved ones around the table to share good food and good times.
Jamie adds: “Ever since I first started creating my cookbooks, I’ve been obsessed with tableware. I’ve also always wanted to design a set that I could use in my books and TV shows – and so my new collection, Big Love, was born. When you've poured all that love into making delicious, beautiful food, you need something equally beautiful to serve and eat it from, right?
“My table is all about that effortless, eclectic feel – I love it when the whole set doesn’t quite match – and that’s exactly what you get here, so whether you buy one piece or the whole lot, mealtimes will always be special."
Matthew continues: “Food trends, lifestyles, family structures – everything is changing and more fluid than it ever has been. We are constantly adapting to the needs of the market and when it comes to food, consumers love and need simple solutions that feed emotions as well as offer practical solutions. Big Love stands out from the rest with a distinctive purpose that enables a better and more joyful mealtime.”
Megan Van Someren, chief commercial officer at the Jamie Oliver Group says: “Jamie and our creative teams have worked closely with Lifetime Brands to design a range that captures the vibrant, yet welcoming personality of the Jamie Oliver brand.
“Dishes can be used in multiple ways; the epic roaster is ideal for preparing roast vegetables, meats, lasagnes, casseroles, potatoes and so much more.
This versatility combined with gorgeous and considered design, is what really makes our range distinctive from anything else available in the market.”
“The range is packed with personality and purposefully designed for sharing, serving and mixing and matching” adds Matthew “The Joy Jug is a great example – it’s simply a jug that brings joy. It looks great on the table or on a countertop. Fill it with custard, cocktails or even flowers.
“The ethos is reflected in the names of every piece – from the Pass Me Platter to the Dishy Bowls and Everything Plates, each piece meets multiple and different consumer needs and missions. Plus each item is packaged in impactful gift box packaging that is eye-catching on shelf and exciting to unbox.”
The ‘Big Love’ has already started with previews on social media including Joe Wicks’ lunch at Jamie Oliver’s house with images of a gorgeous lunch featuring the collection posted to over 4.7 million Instagram followers.
“We are so proud of what this collection represents and can’t wait to unveil the range in full at Ambiente, TrendSet and in our Birmingham showroom. We have an incredible team developing, marketing and supporting the range with global serviceability across Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand – so the sky’s the limit,” comments Matthew.
The Jamie Oliver Big Love collection includes everything needed for everyday meals, special family feasts and big bakes, with everything from mugs and jugs, to plates and sharing platters, serving bowls as well as pie and roasting dishes. The beautifully simple statement pieces are carefully designed in organic, fluid shapes to inject existing homeware collections with new and useful design. Products range from £9.99 to £49.99 and will be available in the UK, Europe and Australia from January 2025.

SHOW
BUSINESS
Ambiente returns to Messe Frankfurt for the slightly later dates of 7 – 11 February in 2025. Some of the many exhibitors at the show give PH a sneak peek at what they will have on their stands and explain why the show is such an important date in their calendars.
With the show fully booked, there is a plethora of brands and products to discover again at Ambiente this year and the show is of huge importance to kick off 2025 in housewares.
Sachin Bagga, director of Sabichi, explains: “Ambiente is an essential platform for Haden, connecting us with European and international buyers. It’s where we showcase our collections, build relationships and share the ideas that drive our brand forward. For us, the best part of the show is the opportunity to be at the heart of the housewares industry, surrounded by creativity, collaboration and the energy of a truly global event.”
which is extremely unpredictable and will often produce interest in the brand from totally unexpected sources.”
Jenny Handley at T&G Woodware continues: “Ambiente is the ideal platform for connecting with global buyers and key decision makers in the homewares, HoReCa and gift industry. For a heritage brand like T&G it provides a unique opportunity to showcase our products to a diverse audience.”
Some companies will be celebrating. Juliet Coleman, marketing manager EMEA, Simplehuman, expands: “2025 is an exciting year for simplehuman as we celebrate turning 25. Since the year 2000 our mission has been to bring high-performance innovation to basic but essential tasks in our daily routine. We call our products tools for efficient living.” With so many exhibitors heading to Frankfurt, standing out with new products is key and there will be plenty of launches in 2025. “We will have new and bestselling lines on display,” says Marcus Lux, head of Gastroback UK, export and business development.
Nick Cornwell, managing director, Black + Blum likes the surprise element:
“Ambiente has in the past been a show
“We have several new products – a 5-in-1 hand mixer set, smoothie maker to go, two dehydrator models including a mini, slow juicer and multi chopper. These will join some of the really popular lines we launched for spring 2024.”

“The exclusive ScratchDefense technology creates a metal utensil-safe non-stick surface that is remarkably scratch proof. During independent lab testing, it withstands more than 350,000 metal utensil scrapes without scratching, peeling or flaking – that’s equal to an estimated 200 years of extreme daily wear and tear.”
working on for over a year, but all will be revealed at the show.”
In kitchen storage and organisation, OXO is readying new lines. “This year we’ve focused in on our commitment to functional design,” says Maria Spagnuolo, senior marketing manager. “The new Twist & Stack Containers are a versatile, stackable option for food storage. With leakproof interchangeable lids, these containers make food prep, storage and on-the-go meals effortless.
“Visitors will also be introduced to a collection of Produce Savers, designed to extend the life of fresh produce. The containers optimise airflow and maintain ideal humidity levels and allow the contents to be seen at a glance, helping further reduce food waste.”
“For Beldray, we will showcase new innovation on three core ranges; Anti-Bac, Deep Clean & Pet Plus+. Ambiente will also provide retailers with the chance to see our Beldray Airfinity, with tangle-
There’s more cookware from Horwood Homewares, which remains under wraps until the show. SILVER CELEBRATIONS
Eddingtons is celebrating 25 years of excellence in housewares in 2025.
Managing director, Richard Walker looks back at a quarter of a century of housewares heritage.
In the mid ‘90s
Eddingtons began trading from an historic mill in the hamlet of Eddington, outside Hungerford, Berkshire. Brian Rogers sourced wine related gadgets and gained expertise in the category by sourcing the latest innovations for direct sales and mail order clients.
Richard Walker, md of Eddingtons comments: “Brian’s eye for product was second to none and he remains a shareholder, yet the product ethos continues to this day, as Eddingtons reaches its 25th year milestone.”
Some of the first products to market included the Bird Song Wall Clock and the popular Wine Bottle Salt-Mill Sault-erns - a play on the French wine region.
Richard furthers: “Curated product was often selected for fun, quirkiness and innovation but always quality. The Burton Egg Per’fect with its revolutionary colourchanging timing strip meant anyone could now boil an egg, functional, foolproof and fun.”
In the late ‘90s, there was an alliance between another homewares distributor, Galley Kitchenware and Eddingtons. In 2000 Eddingtons was formed with Richard Walker joining the partnership with brands such as Joie, Progressive International and JK Adams becoming cornerstones of the portfolio, which later saw the introduction of more Eddingtons curated product like Wine Bottle Corkscrews, the infamous Bucket boys, including Spud Buddy, Count Spatula and Tina Timer.
“We had lots of fun crafting the marketing for the range” says Richard. “Other more serious products were launched such as the
widely sold, featuring names of local villages, Lambourn, Hungerford, Pewsey and Chilton for example. The addition of Lodge cast iron with its authentic made in USA heritage, gave a foot in the HoReCa door by initially supplying TGI Fridays with fajita sizzlers.”
In 2012 new investors in the business spearheaded a charge to grow by acquisition into new product categories. The Epicurean brand allowed Eddingtons to have authority in the outdoor dining and picnicware category.
Later, Gilberts Food Service joined forces with Eddingtons, Richard Gilbert headed this expanded category. Acquisition of Stow Green followed in 2018. Founded in the heart of the Cotswolds in 1976, Stow Green initially specialised in basket and woodware. Tuftop worktop protector brand, part of Stow Green flourished with its three ‘evergreen’ licensed ranges Peter Rabbit, The Snowman and National Trust bringing ceramics, bakeware, kitchen textiles and seasonal giftware.
In 2020 Eddingtons began manufacturing Tuftop glass worktop protectors in-house allowing customisation, flexibility and full control of production at its Hungerford base. More recently Eddingtons has been able to bring brands such as Cidex candles from
Denmark, Vaello Campos and Graupera within the Eddingtons fold. A further partnership was struck when Peugeot Saveurs needed support developing its field sales and in May 2024 Eddingtons hit the road once again to support the independent channel and select key accounts.
In October 2024 Aerolatte was elevated as one of Eddingtons brand cornerstones when founders Alan Green and Gary Lane joined with Eddingtons to expand its worldwide distribution operations. Gary and Alan continue to stay involved to manage strategic growth focusing on new product development. Richard comments: “After opening our EU entity in Holland to service another key brand partner If You Care, there became an opportunity with Aerolatte, managing the brand on the world stage which will take us on to Ambiente and Chicago early in 2025.”
Richard concludes: “I’m delighted to celebrate our 25th anniversary and I’m proud to say we have built a dedicated and loyal team of nearly 30 employees and hundreds of customers worldwide.
“The Eddington’s family extends from our warehouse operatives, Tuftop production team, dedicated customer service and accounts, through to, purchasing, product development and our on the road sales team and Scottish agent. The stage is set for an exciting 2025. Look out for some spectacular 25th year anniversary celebratory offers “Eddingtons25’” over coming months and we hope to see many of our customers at Ambiente and Chicago.” Lights. Camera …. Action.

AMBIENTE PREVIEW: TOWER
Tower is an iconic British brand boasting over 100 years of quality in manufacturing and design excellence. As one of the UK’s fastest growing SDA and housewares brands, it isn’t slowing down anytime soon. At Ambiente, Tower is set to showcase a variety of new innovations, as well as its latest partnership with food media giant, Good Food.
ABOVE TOWERING
GOOD FOOD IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TOWER
At Ambiente, Tower will display its newest collection in partnership with Good Food. As the UK’s largest food media brand, the Good Food in partnership with Tower collection has been making a significant impact in the market.
The collaboration consists of SDA such as air fryers and slow cookers, alongside complementary housewares including food prep, storage, cookware, tools and gadgets. The cookware range is new and
includes individual items and sets of pans, with options in non-stick and TriPly.
All Good Food in partnership with Tower products have been awarded the ‘Tried, Trusted and Tested’ guarantee. This means all products have undergone vigorous rounds of testing by Good Food’s food experts to meet the highest standards.
TOWER BINS
Tower will also exhibit the new range of waste bins, covering all categories including pedal, sensor and voice activated. Many Tower bins come with a bin liner retaining ring, which keeps the bin liner firmly in place. The bins range in capacity from 40L pedal bins to 90L voice activated sensor bins and come in both durable plastic and stainless steel. The range of sensor bins use sensoractivated technology for hands-free opening, with a five second auto close as well. Another way hygiene is ensured is the
DUAL LAYER AIR FRYERS
Another innovation highlighted at Ambiente is the new Dual Layer Air Fryers - Tower has created new models that provide a space-saving solution.
Featuring two vertically layered baskets, this design saves 35% of countertop space without sacrificing cooking capacity. With the ability to cook four different food types at the same time, the slimline design can fit under kitchen cabinets or in cupboards. The Tower Vortx technology allows for rapid air circulation , cooking the food 30% faster with 99% less oil, for healthier meals even quicker.
OMNI CORDLESS RANGE
The Tower Omni Cordless range is a versatile collection containing a range of handheld SDA that offers freedom of movement.
This innovative range features a single, interchangeable, long-lasting battery that works across all appliances in the Omni Cordless range. The batteries can be quickly recharged separately to the appliances, saving both space and time and attached back onto the products.
implementation of Ozone technology. Tower Ozone tackles unwanted moisture and odours at the touch of a button by filtering out particles for fresher air, eliminating bacteria.
Hard-wearing ABS plastic sensor bin options are also available, that are competitively priced, yet feature the same high-level features. Maintaining function, but elevating the technology, Tower’s voice activated bins allow for hands-free opening and closing, from afar.
These new introductions will support Tower’s existing offerings of SDA, housewares and cookware.
Additionally, Tower cookware such as Cerastone Pro, Smart Start, Precision and Diamo will demonstrate Tower’s extensive range of products.
You can find all of this at stand M40, Hall 8.0, alongside other brands such as Swan, Sur La Table, Laura Ashley, and more.
A NEW CHAPTER
FOR WHAT MORE
Ebased What More has rapidly grown to become a category leader and one of the UK’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of plastic housewares and bakeware. Building on its continued success, the business is expanding its portfolio with a focus on its homegrown and newly acquired brands, as well as strengthening its e-commerce operations. This ensures continued support for its retail partners in the UK and internationally, underpinned by a strong digital strategy.
Jonathan Forrester-Cliffe was appointed e-commerce and marketing director in September 2024. Previously with RKW and
department shortly after his appointment.
In February 2024, Bex Holt joined as head of marketing, strengthening the marketing team with the addition of new photographers, designers and the launch of a new in-house studio. Alongside these efforts, the digital trading and digital marketing teams were also bolstered with new team members.
Bex tells PH: "It’s hugely exciting to see the investment across the department, building on an already strong team with complementary skills, experience and personalities to create a cross-functional department fit for our future ambitions."
What More has already established itself as a category leader in private-label
bakeware, supplying nearly every major retailer in the UK. Its flagship homegrown brand, Wham, has become a consumer favourite over the past 20 years, with at least one Wham product in one out of every two UK households.
Complementing Wham, What More’s portfolio includes four other brands:
• Baker & Salt: British-made, high-quality bakeware.
• PushPan: Patented, leak-proof cake tins.
• Sizzll: An innovative sausage pan.
• BetterWare: A much-loved British heritage brand.
In 2024, the in-house marketing team concentrated on injecting personality and clear identities into each brand, all of which will be unveiled at Ambiente in February 2025.
The most notable transformation is in Wham, which now boasts a refreshed look with a new logo, a bright and bold colour palette and new packaging.
“The aim of refreshing Wham was to strengthen its existing position. With millions of Wham products produced and sold each year, it enjoys widespread distribution in the UK and beyond but remains relatively unknown among consumers. By updating the brand and giving it a clearer identity, we’re on a mission to grow Wham into a household name that its distribution deserves,” Bex explains.
BetterWare has been another key focus for the marketing team. Bex shares: "To work with such a well-known brand with great heritage in UK manufacturing is really exciting. Our consumer research shows that nearly 50% of the UK already knows the brand, which gives us a fantastic starting point and places it among the most recognised names in UK housewares."
To prepare for a new era, the team has developed a refreshed look for BetterWare. Drawing inspiration from the original 1930s logo featured on polish tins, the updated BetterWare logo features a scripted, handwritten style and a strapline that reflects its rich history. A vibrant colour palette of blues and reds also nods to its past, while a hand-drawn pattern illustrates the breadth of the product range, providing a distinctive visual asset for the brand.
Photography will play a central role in the rebrand, combining warm, homely tones with a fresh and contemporary aesthetic to attract the next generation of BetterWare shoppers.
In 2025, What More plans to take BetterWare back to its roots with Britishdesigned and British-made products, including outdoor brushware, cleaning and utility products, food storage solutions and bakeware. This will include expanding the successful Air Fryer Accessories range, launching new stacking sets designed to save kitchen storage space, and introducing an entry-level Essentials range. Alongside the branded range, a directto-consumer (D2C) website is in development. This modern take on the original catalogue will offer a wide selection of home products, bringing the heritage brand firmly into the 21st century.
What More’s full product range, including new branding and collections will be on display at Ambiente – Hall 9.0 E36 for bakeware and Hall 9.2 C05 for homewares.

FOCUS ON
While the halls for Ambiente are already fully booked this year, Messe Frankfurt is certainly not resting on its laurels and there are strong plans in place for growth in 2025. Thomas Kastl, director Ambiente Dining, Messe Frankfurt, explains: “We are further expanding the leading position of Ambiente in the dining, kitchen and household sector. As the event halls were already fully booked last year, the growth for 2025 will be mainly in quality; we are going to have more brands and quality suppliers in the halls.

The show will welcome its many loyal exhibitors, as well as several which are returning after a break.
Thomas continues:
“Examples that we happily welcome back are the kitchen brands Rösle and Wüsthof. And there will also be more double placements in 2025 than in the previous year. Glaskoch, for

this is a clear commitment to us and our ability to drive business.”
With changes to consumer lifestyles such as remote working and staycations remaining, Ambiente has enhanced its offering for commercial end-users in the hospitality industry at the show. Thomas explains: “With the newly established special interest Hospitality, we connect them specifically with companies with expertise in these fields. The Hospitality programme covers all Ambiente product areas from Dining to Interior in the Living segment and Office Design & Solutions in the Working area.

Designer of the year
Fabian Freytag has been chosen as the Ambiente Designer 2025. The Berlin-based cosmopolitan draws a lot of inspiration from travelling or ‘roaming, restaurants, rooms’ as he says. He describes himself as a ‘gentle radical’ – a free-spirited, curious personality that is clearly reflected in his designs. True to this ethos, he seamlessly integrates AI into the creative process.
Thomas comments: “We’re eagerly looking forward to seeing his vision of the guest room of the future come to life in his special presentation, The Lounge, in Galleria 1. His concept, presented under the motto ‘Shades of Space’ even includes a pop-up bar.”
industry in Hall 3.1 for the first time. The aim is to open up new business partnerships from all over the world with a focus on the growth areas of hospitality and contract business.”
Alongside these features, the content programme will focus on trends. Thomas outlines: “There’s a lot to discover. What shapes, colours and materials will define modern living and hence, future product ranges? Just come and immerse yourself into the Ambiente Trends 25+ presentation and find out. And if you want to delve more deeply into this, drop by the Conzoom Solutions Academy.
“Future-oriented are also two new interdisciplinary university projects around tabletop themes that we feature in the Talents programme. And for the latest in household innovation, have a look at the special presentation Solutions.
The renowned British industrial designer Sebastian Bergne curated this selection of really ingenious problem solvers for the household.”
Overall, Thomas believes Ambiente should be a key date in housewares buyers’ calendars. “Ambiente is simply the quintessential place for business, networking and inspiration for anybody involved in housewares and tableware –one place, one time, one space. The breadth and depth of the product ranges you see here is unparalleled.
“The Ambiente Dining sections show you what to buy best and the retail-focused Conzoom Solutions Academy tells you how to present and sell it best. And you’ll see there is so much more to explore. High calibre lectures across five academies, special presentations such as the Ambiente trends 25+, the Talents and Solutions and inspiring encounters with people passionate about the housewares industry – all of this makes Ambiente a must-attend event for the industry. Come see for yourself. We’re excited to welcome you.”
GROWTH
Entering a Søstrene Grene store is like being enveloped in a great big hug (hygge). Warm, inviting and bursting with innovative products, it is a fascinating meander across a labyrinth of product categories for gifting and the home, plus much more besides.
The vibe is minimalistic Scandinavian designs across gifts, homewares, housewares, kitchen, greeting cards, giftwrap, hobby crafts, toys, accessories and ‘mini’ home items for children. There are also products according to seasons and occasions. Pricing is very competitive too, making it tempting for people to fill up their baskets. In fact, according to the retailer, hundreds of customers queue outside the doors during UK store launch events, a recent example being in Uxbridge in November. Stores receive new products every week, attracting a huge audience who follow the brand on social media for their daily dose of minimalistic, Scandinavian inspired items. The arrival of the new Uxbridge store has broadened
Søstrene Grene’s presence in London to a total of seven outlets, with other London stores located at King’s Cross, Bromley, Richmond, Kingston-upon-Thames, Wandsworth and Tottenham Court Road (Sostrene Grene’s UK’s flagship store). In total, the company has 45 stores across the UK, with locations stretching from Cardiff to Glasgow.
Founded in 1973 by the Grene family, Søstrene Grene, (which means Grene sisters), remains a family-led business under the leadership of Mikkel Grene, who became group ceo and coowner in 2011. The concept of the brand revolves around the story of two fictitious sisters, Anna and Clara Grene, who ‘create small, bright differences’ to
everyday life, with the inspiration for the sisters taken from the Grene family itself. As Mikkel explains, Anna and Clara are the ‘hosts’ and have been since the opening of the first Søstrene Grene store in the Danish city of Aarhus in 1973.
How would he define Anna and Clara? “Anna is creative, appreciative of art and beauty, while Clara is practical and organised,” explains Mikkel. “Together they represent all that Søstrene Grene stands for, sharing their recommendations on how people can bring more creative joy and aesthetics into their daily life.”
For over 50 years, the concept has been a winner, with the sisters featuring in most written narratives about the company, spreading the message about the creativity, aesthetics and joy which are at the heart of the brand.
“Having a strong presence in some of the largest countries in Europe, such as France,
Record breaking year
Last year (2024), saw Søstrene Grene achieve its most successful financial year on record, showing significant growth despite a challenging retail environment.
For the year ending 30 April 2024, the company reported a 22% increase in turnover, from £203 million to £247 million, alongside a 15% rise in profit before tax, reaching £24 million from £21 million. Gross profit also saw substantial growth, improving from £76 million to £99 million.
“We are proud of the strongest financial result in Søstrene Grene’s history,” states Mikkel. “Our performance validates the strategic decisions we have made to innovate and expand our business. The results clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of our investments. Our customers continue to seek quality, sustainability and stylish designs at accessible prices. This has reinforced our position in the market, even amid broader economic challenges. Our ability to meet their needs during uncertain times has been a key driver of our success.”
with 35+ stores and Germany, with 80+ stores, gives us great confidence to continue expanding in the UK,” says Mikkel.
Currently, the Danish retail brand is actively seeking to occupy vacant retail space across the UK with a view to helping to revitalise high streets. "We have already received a warm welcome from customers in the UK and are excited to expand Anna and Clara's world to even more cities and people across the country," states Mikkel. With an ever-changing product mix, he says, “prices are never higher than they need be.”
As with most retail chains, Søstrene Grene stores come in many shapes and sizes.
“We have over 300 stores in 17 different markets. There are several concept criteria that need to be met before final location approval, but I believe some of our strengths in expansion lie in our creative approach to finding solutions that offer our customers a unique shopping experience," says Mikkel.
Sustainably speaking
In addition to its financial success, Søstrene Grene remains committed to sustainable growth. The company’s carbon reduction targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), reinforcing its commitment to reducing environmental impact.
The company’s financial success provides a strong foundation for its ambitious plans. The retailer is allocating £11 million to important business projects, including SAP system implementation, warehouse automation and enhancing digital and marketing capabilities. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to expand the brand’s presence, with some 60 new stores having opened in the past 12 months and an ambitious goal of reaching 500 global stores by 2027.
The stores are designed to have everything on the same floor. However, one of Søstrene Grene's strengths in expansion lies in its creative approach to finding solutions that provide customers with a unique experience.
Comments Mikkel: “We are not only expanding our physical presence but also investing in technology to enhance efficiency and the customer experience. These investments are crucial as we position ourselves for sustained growth.”
Despite rising freight costs, the company has prioritised maintaining affordability by absorbing these expenses
“We are making meaningful progress in lowering emissions across our supply chain,” confirms Mikkel. “With our targets validated by SBTi, we are on a clear, path to reducing our environmental impact while continuing to grow.”
rather than passing them on. Mikkel acknowledges the pressure on margins but reaffirms the commitment, explaining: “While increased freight costs are a challenge, we remain focused on keeping our products affordable. We expect some impact on margins this year, but are confident in achieving even stronger results next year.”
Family-owned housewares supplier, Fackelmann Brands was established in 1919 and currently operates over 40 business units worldwide. PH delves into the company’s history and finds out about its latest acquisition and plans for Ambiente.
A CATEGORY CAPTAIN
Autensils and baking sectors, Fackelmann Brands currently unites over 20 brands, with more than 12,000 products under its umbrella. The company’s history spans over 100 years.
Simon Rees, UK head of sales, tells PH: “Founded by Heinrich Fackelmann in 1919 in Hersbruck, Germany, the company grew into a global leader for kitchenware under family leadership.
“Alexander Fackelmann took over as ceo in 1992 and expanded operations internationally. The company remains true to its core values: quality, innovation, consumer satisfaction and environmental responsibility.”
Alongside its international arms, the core of the Fackelmann Brands business is manufacturing with facilities across the world. The company has four facilities in China, including Jensen Industrial, a manufacturer for tools and gadgets in multiple substrates, as well as two production sites in India, including a
kitchenware.
At the Fackelmann head office in Hersbruck, there is advanced injection moulding capabilities and production of bathroom furniture, while at Aichach, the company has one of the largest bakeware factories in Europe, producing Zenker and Dr Oetker baking tins.
This widespread base has been an important factor in Fackelmann Brands continued growth and success. Simon explains: “The company’s global presence enables the delivery of innovative POS concepts and omni-channel solutions. As a family-owned business, long-term perspective and sustainable management practices are prioritised to ensure a bright future for generations to come.
Finally, there is a facility in Poland for FSC woodware and a plant in France manufacturing vacuum cleaner bags.
“Fackelmann considers itself as a ‘category captain’ – it delivers the entire value chain for its retail partners, from the product idea to its implementation at the point of sale. Fackelmann is a strong associate to its international retail partners –in terms of production and logistics, point of sale, as well as marketing.”
The brands offered are tailored to each country. In 2023, Fackelmann Brands conducted a full range review and refresh for the UK ranges, many of the ranges in the collection were historic and built from the German ranges at higher price points previously. The company looked to implement a clear pricing strategy which had quality, value driven ranges at the right price point. With the consumer having less money available for everyday purchases, the focus needed to be on the entry/fighting price points.
Fackelmann Initial, a range of utensils and gadgets, has been a leading range since its launch in 2023 and new items will be added this year including a new PP colour handle for Autumn 25. One of the FM Initial sieves is Fackelmann Brands top selling line on Amazon and the Fackelmann brands has enjoyed 320% growth on Amazon in 2024.
Wiltshire is the number one kitchenware brand in Australia and the company is launching UK specific ranges including Wiltshire Silicone in four colours and Zinc Alloy gadgets in matching pantones. New retail stands are also available for the range.
Sustainability is also an important focus. Coupled with range developments in the UK the company continues to look at sustainability from various angles.
Packaging being FSC, reducing packaging were possible and using less plastic packaging. The consumer is still only willing to pay so much more for an eco story but the awareness/voice from the younger consumer is growing and eco plastics are vital in future NPD. Fackelmann Brands is also looking at where products are made and reducing product miles and risk for the group strategy.
2024 was a strong year for Fackelmann Brands. Simon comments: “Fackelmann's success story in 2024
showcases its ability to thrive amidst global challenges. Double-digit growth in the US and Asia as well as a strong recovery in Europe, are driving the current momentum.
“Innovative product launches like Paris Hilton cookware capture consumer attention, while AI-powered strategies unlock new opportunities in the US.
Fackelmann's commitment to digitalisation and automation strengthens its position, paving the way for sustainable growth and future success.
During the year, Fackelmann Brands acquired Apollo Housewares, a further commitment to its value-driven approach. Apollo is a leading UK-based provider of value driven home and
UK's product portfolio and expand its market presence in the UK.
Alexander Fackelmann, president, Fackelmann Brands, says: “We are delighted to welcome Apollo Housewares into the Fackelmann Brands family. Apollo’s outstanding reputation for quality value driven products in housewares perfectly complements our values. This acquisition will significantly broaden our product portfolio and strengthen our position in the UK market.”
Looking ahead to 2025, the
company is positive. Plans are in the pipeline to develop the UK showroom in Cannock, Staffordshire, to showcase the full UK offering; a new CRM and order taking system is being implemented; logistics for Fackelmann Brands and Apollo will be consolidated into one warehouse in Felixstowe by the third quarter; while new product development continues apace with Far East buying trips to India, Vietnam, Thailand and China being planned.
The year will also see Fackelmann Brands exhibit at Ambiente, INDX and Exclusively. The stand at Ambiente – Hall 9, stand A20 is 300m2 and will be filled with newness. The team from European Quality Housewares (EQH) will join Fackelmann Brands on its stand from Hong Kong to present new concepts and ranges for private label in a special room, which forms a large part of the global business.
Elsewhere, the stand will house the new Paris Hilton collection, which has been well-received in the US and promising in Germany. Zenker/Dr Oetker will also display its new coil coated PFAS free baking tin ranges made in Germany.
The Fackelmann UK team will be available on the stand for the duration of the show and there will be a Fackelmann show party on the stand on Sunday evening. Simon comments: “At Ambiente, we’re thrilled to present exciting innovations: completely new product categories, unique collaborations and ontrend solutions inspired by our slogan ‘Make everyday easy’.
“Our product presentations are specially designed to stand out, offering an immersive experience where visitors can explore and interact with our range. Live demonstrations at the stand will bring our innovations to life, showing how they simplify everyday tasks and meet modern consumer needs. Don’t miss the chance to discover how our products can enrich your assortment and create added value for your customers. We look forward to welcoming you to the Fackelmann stand.”
Simon concludes: “With a proven track record of success and a dedicated team, Fackelmann Brands is well-positioned for continued growth and expansion. Its legacy is built on family values and a commitment to excellence.”

HOUSE OF BRANDS
Dthe resurgence of home cooking. Martin Devaney, founding partner and head of marketing and sales, tells PH: “From the start, we were inspired to provide products for people who were looking to do their bit for the planet and challenging the ‘throw away culture’ that exists for low cost products that don’t last.
“We wanted to offer products that can be used and re-used, year after year, rather than needing recycling or ending up in landfill, after only a year or two.
“Our second key driver was to support the
home cooking is, in general, far more cost effective and helps reduce food waste and single use packaging.”
Established in 2021, Devaney & Co aims to provide consumers and retailers with easy to use, high quality sustainable products that are built to last. PH catches up with founding partner and head of marketing and sales, Martin Devaney, to find out about the company’s plans for Spring Fair this year.
Devaney & Co began initially by distributing Vitamix, the 100 year-old, American high performance blender brand.
“Our plan was to introduce other new brands asap, but little did we know that after only six months of trading, there would be a war in Europe,” exclaims Martin. “Our focus shifted to navigating the severe cost-of-living crisis and plans to broaden our product offer was put on hold.”
company is positive about the progress made and is excited about the future. The team has made a good start in launching new brands and growing awareness. Sales for the final quarter of last year were better than expected for all the brands.
Martin furthers: “Of course, there is, still much to do, to fully realise the sales potential that our brands offer. Our business is still very much in its infancy and faces the same challenges as most businesses.”
Late 2023 saw the addition of Kuvings juicers, a world-leading juicing brand from Korea, and 2024, the introduction of Graef, an award-winning heritage brand from Germany, with a range of contemporary kitchen appliances and Fritaire, an innovative, design led, self-cleaning, non-toxic air fryer; Teflon, BPA and PFOA free.
“The ‘2024 Mintel Consumer Report,’ on UK attitudes towards home cooking, indicates further momentum in the move towards healthy, home cooking; this is great news for Devaney & Co. But we are under no illusion that the ongoing cost-of-living crisis means that UK consumers will continue to be financially squeezed over the next few years.”
“However, we believe that our original ethos - to source high quality innovative products, is more relevant now than it was when we started in 2021. It’s very much a case of buy once – buy right.”
Devaney & Co holds exclusive UK and Irish distribution rights for all the brands it represents.
As we all know, 2024 was a challenging year, but overall, the
“Our key marketing messages for 2025 will continue to be about long-term value for money, energy efficiency & sustainability and producing great food at home.”
The beginning of 2025 sees the company in a positive position. Martin comments: “We are cautiously optimistic about 2025.
Of course, we expect trading conditions to remain difficult but we firmly believe in the relevance of all our brands and product propositions.”
The Spring launch of Graef’s new coffee story and a great range of outdoor cooking products from Riviera and Bar and Louis Tellier sees the company very well positioned to achieve sales grow in these two strong categories.
“In short, 2025 will be a year of consolidation. We will contnue to invest sensibly in growing awareness of our brands and building interest and confidence, with consumers and retailers alike. We will also be looking to expand our retailer network, with a focus on quality over quantity. Hence our first visit as Devaney & Co to Spring Fair.”
To kick off the new year, Devaney & Co will exhibit at Spring Fair, which the company sees as the ideal platform to meet a wide selection of retail partners, from independent cookshops to multichannel retailers, department stores and garden centres ahead of the spring/summer season.
Martin expands: “With retailers from all over the UK and Ireland attending, it is a perfect opportunity to introduce Devaney & Co and show a selection of product introductions from 2024, as well as the new brands and products being introduced in 2025.”
The company will focus on three areas at the show. Firstly, the re-introduction of Graef to the UK, with its exquisite new coffee collection and stylish contemporary
kettles and toasters. Graef has regularly been voted as one of Germany’s top 100 brands of the century since the awards were introduced in 2009, so visitors can expect to see some impressive products.
Martin says: “come to our stand to see an appliance that every kitchen needs but is not widely used in the UK”
The second area of focus is to bring some innovation to the outdoor cooking space. Martin comments: “We will be presenting Riviera & Bar's electric planchas/hot plates; the iconic Marcel outdoor oven from Louis Tellier and a collection of their best-selling outdoor products including tabletop BBQs for those homes with limited outdoor space.
“As you might imagine from Devaney & Co, they represent a healthier and more environmentally friendly way of outdoor cooking, as well as being easy to use and clean. At the same time they have exceptional build quality and offer long-term value for money - qualities not always available with the more conventional products on the market.”
The third and final focus will be on Gobel’s special bakeware, which uses traceable materials, while the baking moulds and sheets feature special double layer coatings which are both PFAS and PFOA free, as well as being abrasive resistant. All this and yet surprisingly affordable.

When coffee shops closed and consumers had to recreate their daily caffeine fix at home, we saw a surge in sales of barista-style coffee machines and specialty tea products. As the world then emerged into a cost-of-living crisis, the trend for at home coffee brewing, as well as energy efficient appliances, continued. Key suppliers in the sector share how sales are doing now in tea and coffee and what the current trends are.
GRIND
Far from being a passing trend while at home in the pandemic, consumer demand for tea and coffee products has continued to be strong over recent years.
“Making coffee at home continues to be a major trend in the market. As the popularity of coffee grows, consumers are increasingly seeking ways to recreate the barista experience in their own kitchens – at a fraction of the cost,” explains Dinos Vassiloulis, head of product management, electrical, RKW.
“On top of this, there has been a decrease in demand for machines that use coffee pods due to concerns surrounding the plastic waste. Espresso machines remain a popular choice. In 2025, we are excited to launch the Swan Barista Espresso Machines, featuring our highest bar pressure for improved coffee extraction and digital controls.”
Charles Cadman, product development, Salter, continues: “The ‘coffee shop at home’ trend is really growing; consumers are recognising the money they can save on their favourite coffee orders by investing in a more sophisticated coffee machine at home. Products with added functionality like a milk frothing wand or warming tray, add to the feel that the consumer is not missing out, by having their hot drink at home.”
Marcus Lux, head of Gastroback UK, export and business development agrees: “There has been a move in recent years to a demand from consumers to have the equipment at home to create coffee and specialist teas they enjoy on the high street. This is something that has been in the national media a lot in recent months. It has its roots in the pandemic. While consumers did return to coffee shops, there is still a demand for the equipment and in part, this has been driven by cost-of-living pressures – spending a lot of money regularly on coffee which could be mitigated by buying a good quality coffee machine instead.
“Products which allow the user to tailor make that brew too are proving popular. Coffee makers that offer a memory function and customisation (all Gastroback machines offer a programmable function) or a product that brews teas at the right temperature.”
While sales are still strong, there is a clear cycle seen by Barista & Co. James Gray, founder, tells PH: “Like many categories, we have seen a slow down since Covid, but this is primarily down to product lifecycle as typically people change their coffee machines every five years, so the equipment that they invested in is still going strong.
“That said, the fastest growing category in roasted coffee is whole bean, so that is a clear sign that the use of espresso and automatic machines is actually increasing.”
Others are seeing a more challenging climate. Claire Budgen, commercial and marketing director, Lifetime Brands, says: “The market is challenging and tapping into consumer trends and evolving in line with them is key – luckily, we have a fantastic team of trend and buying
boiling temperature to infuse.
experts who do exactly this.
“It’s also important to recognise what our partners need. With La Cafetiere, we’ve really created a brand that is a complete tea and coffee solution for retailers; we continue to see success with our core ranges such as Pisa cafetieres, Venice espresso makers and a full range of borosilicate glassware.”
Certain areas are strong. “We’re definitely seeing coffee gifting on the increase,” says Richard Walker, managing director, Eddingtons. “The Aerolatte Original Steam Free Frother was launched over 20 years ago, but sales continue well internationally.”
Such products also evolve to tie into trends. Richard continues: “We’ve seen a big trend in matcha tea preparation and demand for the Aerolatte Matcha Whisk is soaring with specialist tea retailers. Consumers are increasingly seeking healthy options and matcha tea contains 100 times more of the antioxidant epigallocatechin than any other tea and increased vitamins and minerals.”
Marcus continues: “Speciality teas are increasingly popular and to get the best flavour, the teas need to be brewed at different temperatures. You need a product where you can select different temperatures.
“We have three tea makers where you can select the temperature depending on the tea type, so our Design Tea Aroma Plus has eight programmes, as well as a hot water function. The Design Tea & More Advanced has 11 programmes and a Schott glass simmering basket for preparation of meals and baby food.”
Dinos furthers: “We are seeing a continued trend of consumers experimenting with herbal teas. Unlike traditional tea, herbal teas require a lower than
This has in turn created a demand for kettles with a variable temperature control, making it a priority for us.
“There has been growing conversation surrounding instant coffee and how it doesn’t require boiling water. A temperature of approximately 80c is sufficient, saving consumers time and energy. The Tower Mirage kettle is perfect for this, featuring a unique temperature display projected directly onto the switch.”
James outlines another growth area: “We are seeing a move away from manual coffee makers. As the price comes down, consumers are moving towards automatic and semiautomatic coffee machines. This has been accelerated as consumers are not spending on takeaway coffee.
“One area that is growing the manual brewer category is cold coffee. Cold coffee is growing rapidly and hot coffee is in decline, even in regions with colder weather like the UK. We have also seen sales increase on our coffee makers that can be used outdoors as camping becomes more popular.”
Claire continues: “Another key consideration is portable items. This isn’t just limited to onthe-go mugs and flasks – consumers have become at-home baristas and are particular about the habits they have formed, wanting the ability to brew their own tea or coffee while away from home.”
Of course, aesthetics always has a role to play. Gareth Till, country manager UK & Ireland, Bodum, comments:
“Today’s consumer is placing a lot of emphasis on design and colour as well as making sure the product they buy does the job well. In recent years we have gone for colour in a big way at Bodum. That starts with our Java range of French Presses, with a BPA-free scratch resistant carafe housed in a durable plastic frame, which carries solid colour superbly.
“So we have French Presses with all red, green and pink frames and lids which allow consumers to opt for a splash of colour on the countertop. A more subtle take includes multicolour Java French Presses. This eclectic look sits nicely alongside one of our key developments during this last year - the exclusive design partnership with MoMA the Museum of Modern Art in New York.”
Coordination is also strong. Charles explains: “We’re seeing an uplift in coordinating countertop with SDA items. Ranges such as Salter Toronto, which cover kettle, toaster, microwave and accessories, make it easy to create a sleek and sophisticated aesthetic.”
With so many items coming to market, being an at-home barista is becoming increasingly accessible.

Having celebrated a successful 80th anniversary year in 2024, with new designs, products and key retailer partnerships, heritage brand Bodum is on track to secure its place as a go-to innovator in coffee, tea – and more. UK country manager, Gareth Till, sits down with PH.
INNOVATION LEADS
THE WAY
It’s been a busy year at Bodum. Gareth Till joined to head up the UK business in the autumn of 2023 to grow the brand’s presence in the UK and with the unashamed goal of regaining the top spot as an innovator in coffee and tea.
“At this point last year, we kicked off our year of 80th celebrations having heard from new, existing and former customers how pleased they were that we were revitalising Bodum’s presence in the UK,” says Gareth.
“We were hoping for some more of the same obviously as the year went on, but the scale of the reaction has been overwhelming and really gratifying, especially for our brilliant design team based at Bodum HQ in Switzerland.”
The core ethos for Bodum is a business which is committed to quality, sustainability and design excellence. It is still a family-run business, headed by thirdgeneration Peter Bodum and while coffee and tea products will always be at the core
of everything Bodum does – it has been producing coffee makers for decades (see The Bodum Story) – the design and marketing expertise at Bodum HQ has lent itself perfectly to successfully developing into a host of different categories including electricals, kitchenware, cookware, cutlery and storage.
“We are a heritage brand but one that speaks to today’s consumer,” continues
Gareth. “Those consumers are definitely placing a lot of emphasis on design and colour, as well as making sure the product they buy does the job well.”
In recent years Bodum has gone for colour in a big way. That starts with the Java range of French Presses, with a BPA-free scratch-resistant carafe housed in a durable plastic frame which carries solid colour well. For example, French Presses with all red, green and pink frames and lids which allow consumers to opt for a splash of colour on the counter-top – for the price of a few cups of latte from a high street café.
Design has really been brought to the fore though through the exclusive design partnership with MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art, in New York. This developed from a reworking of Bodum’s 1950s Caffettiera French Press which for this MoMA partnership is a glass carafe and stainless steel frame with dark green/lilac accents. Now the range includes a huge selection of products and one of the best sellers in the coffee category, a filter machine.
The 80th anniversary celebrations also gave the team great inspiration to explore design – and product – ideas, including translucent coloured bread bins and knife blocks, double wall glass products, travel mugs and SDAs like
dual compartment air fryers, as well as products featuring a delicate ‘80’ insignia.
“Celebrating our 80th anniversary in 2024 really highlighted that if a brand gives consumers what they want – or perhaps they don’t know what they want till they see it – then that’s a brand which will endure,” comments Gareth.
“Cost-effective design coupled with efficient products will win through with consumers and we are continuing to see that at Bodum. Consumers have become much more sophisticated in the coffee or tea they want to drink at home and we don’t see that falling away any time soon.
“Our innovative approach to products, coupled with our history, means we understand what makes a great retail proposition.”
This has been borne out over the last year with retailers like M&S, Dunelm and Harvey Norman coming on board and Selfridges stocking the exclusive MoMA designs alongside iconic Bodum coffee lines like Chambord.
“We are still a small team in the UK, with Sarah Whyld as senior accounts manager also looking after our growing independent
THE BODUM STORY
Bodum was established in 1944 in Copenhagen, Denmark by Peter Bodum senior. Jorgen Bodum, son of founder Peter, took over the business in the 1970s, then moving to Switzerland later in that decade, placing the business at the heart of Europe.
Bodum remains a 100% family-owned company. It established itself on the international stage with the launch of the Santos vacuum coffee maker in 1958, but it was its first French press coffee maker, the Bistro, launched by Jorgen when he took over the business in 1974, which was arguably the product that made a real impact especially in the UK.
business,” explains Gareth. “Our UK HQ in Telford has B2B and B2C warehousing, an outlet, café and coffee roasting – this is a quickly developing aspect to the business we encourage all retailers to look more closely at.
“We have such a large range of product that we still want to tell buyers about and that will be our focus initially for 2025. We are exhibiting at Chicago and will be showing some great new product at Exclusively in June too. We really have only just started.”

HYDRATION STATIONS
Consumers are more health conscious than ever and as such, getting the daily two litres+ of water is a priority for many, in turn leading to increased sales of bottles and cups. Heleen Janssen, head of brand, Mepal, explains: “In recent years, there has been an increased focus on staying hydrated throughout the day. This shift is driven by growing health trends, a rise in outdoor activities and the blurring line between sports and daily life.
“This trend is also evident in fashion and athleisure. Additionally, the proliferation of social media content about sports and healthy lifestyles has further emphasised the importance of hydration as a key component of a healthy lifestyle.”
Heleen continues: “In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in sales within the hydration category, reflecting our expanded assortment in this area. This trend is evident both online and offline, with shelves filled with a variety of bottles.
“This year, we are introducing a new approach to hydration: bottles designed to match your sport activity and drink preferences.”
With an increased focus on health and wellbeing, consumers are now more focused on drinking more water and keeping themselves healthy, than ever. This, coupled with a collective move to be more sustainable, has seen an increased focus on water related products over recent years. Some of the key suppliers talk about the increase in sales and how they are innovating in the sector.
Ben James, vice president global commercial, general manager EMEA, Stanley, agrees: “We have seen explosive growth in sales here in Europe and our focus remains on product, innovation, design, colour, performance and quality. The UK is a key country for our growth here in EMEA.”
Valentin Ortiz, ceo, Stor, adds: “The trend for health and wellbeing has been increasing sales for several years already. Being hydrated is a wellbeing attitude.”
Nick Cornwell, managing director, Black+Blum, furthers: “The water bottle category retains its popularity with consumers, despite the constant high level of sales over the past years.
“Now that the market is more mature, we are observing a trend of consumers wanting to buy products in this category that are more thoughtfully designed for a longer life – rather than needing to keep replacing lower quality products.”
This shift feeds into the sustainability conversation, too. “Consumers are increasingly prioritising sustainability and functionality when choosing water products,” says Debbie Wann, marketing executive, ION8.
“There’s a noticeable shift towards reusable bottles with features that fit busy, healthconscious lifestyles. Designs that combine style, durability and convenience are leading the way, with leak-proof, easy-clean options in high demand.”
In terms of what’s trending within the sector, it’s straws all the way for Thermos. “Bottles and cups with straws are hugely popular,” comments James Sheldon, head of product and marketing. “Our new Icon Cold Cup with Straw was an award winner at The Big Christmas Press Show and has featured on so many gift guides. These larger style cups are extremely on-trend as people like the convenience and challenge of
drinking their water quota that these products enable.”
Stanley has launched a new Cross Bottle to further integrate the water bottle into busy lives. Ben expands: “We know what consumers want and we are finding ways to meet them in more places within their lives.
One example is with our launch of the Cross Bottle. The Cross Bottle and our ‘wear your water’ campaign started with a consumer insight. We then created the industry’s only wearable non-round double vacuum wall sealed bottle.
“We have a lot to carry – phone, keys, wallet, laptop, gym bag, shopping bags. The Stanley Cross Bottle is the embodiment of how Stanley 1913 makes people’s lives easier through smart design – without compromising on style. We’ve designed and engineered a one-of-its-kind product that is comfortable to wear, moves with our consumers and fits organically within their lifestyle for hands-free hydration.”
While the demand for water bottle and cup products has in part been driven by sustainability as consumers look to reduce their consumption of single-use plastics, suppliers are striving to make the reuseable alternatives as sustainable as possible too.
Valentin outlines: “The use of aluminium, steel or glass are the required ones on adult products, while reusable plastics are used for kids.”
Debbie adds: “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our bottles are made with recyclable materials and are 100% carbon neutral. We also minimise packaging and use solvent-free paints. By creating durable, long-lasting designs, we encourage consumers to reduce single-use plastics and embrace a more eco-conscious lifestyle.”
James furthers: “Thermos has been around for 120 years and people are loyal to the brand as
the products are built to last. With a five-year guarantee across all of our products, they are not only cost effective, but more beneficial to the planet. By consistently producing such high-quality products, we allow our customers to become more sustainable with their choices.”
“As always, we prioritise using durable materials,” explains Heleen, “carefully selecting the right materials and suppliers for our bottles. We believe that by encouraging the use of our products, including bottles and other togo items, we provide a great alternative to single-use products.
“We’ve also extended the lifespan of thousands of our products, by offering replacement/spare parts, which will also be available for our new Active range of bottles.” Stanley works on key principles to ensure its sustainable in its approach. “We pride ourselves on building a more sustainable, less disposable life and world,” says Ben. “We organise around these five principles and actions: Commitment to the highest quality backed by a Built for Life Lifetime Guarantee; Recycled materials, including recycled stainless steel in 63% of Stanley 1913 units produced; Values-led sourcing; Industry collaborations to reduce scope 1,2,3 emissions by 50% by 2030 from 2018 baseline; and the Stanley 1913 Creators Fund. We are proud of the fund, which was launched in 2023 to invest in a diverse set of innovators building solutions to our world’s deepest challenges.”
Black+Blum has an innovative approach. Nick outlines: “Often the taste of tap water compared to bottled can put people off consuming tap water. A Black+Blum charcoal water filter inserted into a water bottle will help to solve that problem.
“The charcoal filter has a life of six months, after which time the charcoal can be used as a moisture remover in a fridge or wardrobe, a deodoriser or can be broken up and put into houseplants as a fertiliser. A very eco-conscious product.”
Devaney offers a way for consumers to create sparkling water at home. Martin Devaney, sales and marketing, Devaney & Co, expands: “We came across Carbon8 at Ambiente last year and
really liked the fact that it made and dispensed sparkling water at the touch of a button.
“Carbon8 is simple to use and turns tap water into sparkling water with a patented technology. No PET bottles are required and the filter removes chlorine from the water and potassium, magnesium and calcium are added through the carbonation process.”
Along with the taste of tap water, consumers often have concerns about its safety. Tony Holland, UK retail sales manager, Aquaphor, comments: “With recent water contamination scares reported in the press and the perceived poor performance of many of the UK’s water authorities, consumers are increasingly interested in the technical performance of Point of Use water filtration.
“It’s no longer good enough to simply state that a water filter improves the taste of water, technical details of what is removed are increasingly being asked for. For Aquaphor, this has seen an increase in our technically adept Reverse Osmosis under the sink systems, but has also benefitted our more mainstream 200 litre Maxfor+ and 350 litre A5 water filters as they perform well against our core competitors.”
Whether it’s the bottle, jug, or the way the water itself is produced, the water sector is continuing to grow in the UK and further afield.

For the past 12 years I have worked at Stokke and most recently as vice president and head of global HR & IT.
What is your greatest achievement at the company?
I have been working with the teams implementing the new global strategy. This involves aligning our local initiatives with the broader company vision and innovating to meet the demands of our market. I have also been creating a robust sales culture, building and mentoring a team committed to nurturing customer relationships.
Favourite
part of your job?
It is the variety in the role. From creating innovative strategies and developing efficient processes, to meeting and engaging with customers, which provides invaluable insights that help us tailor our offerings.
Are there any unfortunate consequences of your job?
My family can’t stand it when I pick up the salt and pepper mills in every restaurant. It’s become a running joke among us.
Who is the unsung hero of the company?
Creating a culture of collaboration is essential for our success. Everyone has a crucial role to play for us, no matter what role they hold.
Biggest change within the industry that you have seen since you have worked in it?
My observation is that building strong brands is becoming increasingly important. With the vast array of products available, both in-store and online, it's critical to differentiate ourselves to stand out.
Biggest lesson you’ve taken away from the last year?
Leaving a company where you've spent 12 years is a chance to redefine your career path and set new goals. Stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing challenges, can help you grow.
If you could change one thing about the housewares industry, what would it be and why?
It would be to enhance sustainability practices. By prioritising sustainability, we could reduce waste and create products that are not only functional and stylish, but also environmentally friendly.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Always hire someone better you. This is crucial for developing both personal and professional growth. By bringing in individuals who excel where you may not, you create a dynamic, highperforming team.
If you didn’t work in the housewares industry, what industry would you work in?
I would have pursued a career as a doctor. The medical field has always fascinated me, both helping people and the need of continuous learning and growth. This aligns with my passion for lifelong learning.
