Editor’s comment Picture this: I am reading ‘Navigating the New Retail Landscape - A Guide for Business Leaders’ (the book generously given to delegates at the recent bira conference by speaker, Jonathan Reynolds) while my younger daughter sits next to me reading the more humorous sounding, ‘The Spy Who Loved School Dinners’. Yet it is me that laughs out loud (even though we are in a quiet waiting room!) The context of the Smartphone bowl photo in Jonathan Reynolds’ book is to illustrate the shopping habits of China’s millenials – 20% of Chinese people who have a mobile check it ‘100 times or more a day and 23% say that they ‘feel panic’ when their mobile is not in their hand.’ (Sounds familiar teenage behavior to me!) Jonathan uses the term ‘digital tribes’ to describe behaviour that ‘transcends national boundaries’ and of course, he relates this to the escalation of mobile commerce. Which reminds me of another recent scenario…. I am soaking up the sun on a patio in Portugal when my older daughter asks, “Mum, can I borrow your credit card?” She has spotted a top on her social media platforms – no particular brand but it looks good on somebody in a picturesque setting – and in no time at all, it is winging its way across the Atlantic from a US website. Yes, this is a new retail landscape! It is no wonder that bira’s keynote conference speaker, Laura Tennison (of JoJo Maman Bébé) urged fellow retailers to get posting products on their instragram accounts (or ask a teenager to do so on their behalf). As the recent bira conference highlighted, these are exciting as well as challenging times. As entries come in for the Excellence in Housewares Awards’ Excellence in Retailer Initiative and Retail Display categories, it is clear that retailers of all types are continuing to raise the bar when it comes to engaging with consumers. Exclusively shows’ help for Shelter Exhibitors at Exclusively Housewares and Exclusively Electrical are invited to donate products at the close of the shows for Progressive Housewares’ Housewares for the Homeless initiative with Shelter, now in its 18th year. Kitty O’Shea, corporate partnerships assistant for Shelter commented: “We’re truly grateful here at Shelter for the long-running support of Progressive Housewares and Exclusively Housewares exhibitors - our services are always hugely grateful for the donations!” The housewares products will help previously homeless families (who have little or no possessions) to settle into new homes with the support of Shelter’s projects in Birmingham and Slough. Donations are packed up and delivered with the help of AMPM Transportation. Exhibitors are invited to join Shelter and PH for a photo for the magazine on Wednesday June 14 at 8.45am on the mezzanine steps of Exclusively Housewares, bringing a product to hold.

Forecasting with Exclusively Exclusively Housewares and Exclusively Electrical (June 13-14 at London’s Business Design Centre) will explore future influences on retailing and housewares product development – in addition to its host of keenly anticipated new product launches. Five insightful seminars take place on Wednesday 14 in the Tomorrow’s Kitchen area of the shows, including the hugely popular annual presentation by Phil Pond, trend translator at Scarlet Opus (identifying three key trends with Above: View of last year’s examples). Everyone knows that John Lewis is a 'national treasure', but currently, the much-loved department store is running its own summer National Treasures event which ends on August 20. “This campaign celebrates all of our favourite things, past times and quirks, along with the Best of British design and culture," explains Nicola Hattersley, buyer, Cookshop. "We hope that it will dial up the fun and inspire interaction with customers." Continues Nicola: "Award winning illustrator Paul Thurlby has worked alongside our own design team to create a series of illustrations for the Above: A view of the campaign. Tea Wedgwood style London's Peter Jones, part of the John Lewis group, is hosting a three week Wedgwood Tea Conservatory which is based on the store's ground floor atrium space. The Conservatory is an imaginative take on an English garden offering a unique tea experience featuring innovative Wedgwood Wonderlust tea blends and teaware. Tea drinkers have got until the mid June to enjoy a very special cuppa. In addition, a Wedgwood Tea Conservatory Pop Up will feature at RHS Flower Shows at Chatsworth and Tatton Park this summer while the brand has also sponsored a garden a the RHS Flower Show at Chatsworth. The Wedgwood garden is described as ‘romantic and informal, distinctively English in feel but not a reproduction or pastiche.’ Josiah Wedgwood’s son, John founded the RHS, in its original form, in 1804.
Reusable cup that's easy to carry Auteur has expanded its product portfolio with the distribution of new US brand Stojo, a 335ml collapsable cup that can slip into a pocket. Stojo (which took three years to perfect its design) says that it will help to address the growing issue of disposable coffee cup waste, where 500bn single-use cups get tossed annually. Each Pocket Cup is designed for thousands of uses and equates to 365 single-serve disposable cups each year. The Stojo design can be seen in New York's Museum of Modern Art Design Store.

Bryan’s best foot forward

Proving that injuries and painful blisters could not deter him, Bryan Clover, ceo of the Rainy Day Trust, not only completed the massive 186 mile charity walk along the entire scenic Pembrokeshire Coastal Path at the beginning of May, but he achieved it a full half a day faster than he'd planned. The walk “has gone a long way to raise awareness of RDT’s work,” says Bryan, and has so far raised over £6,500 (including gift aid) for the industry charity. Explains Bryan: "There are some 35,000 feet of hills, some of which are incredibly steep and the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest. The walk began at St Dogmaels on May 3 with the steepest section of the coastline, involving over 7,200 feet of climb and descent in just 19 miles. Only five miles into the walk, I twisted my knee in a rabbit hole, which was to cause difficulties for the remaining route and required strapping to be worn for the next nine days.” "Throughout the walk I was monitoring the number of steps taken and calories burned," he continues. "The average each day was 38-40,000 steps with about 4,600 calories burned. Moreover, because of the warm weather, I was drinking 3-4 litres of water each day, all of which had to be carried." The walk was sponsored by Addis Housewares, which not only provided PR and marketing support but also a generous £3,000 donation. In addition, the company's Janine Davies and Lewis Major joined Bryan for a stretch of the walk from Solva to Newgale. The Rainy Day Trust is the UK’s only charity supporting the home improvement workforce and their families in times of need. They have been caring for past and present employees of the housewares, pottery and glass, hardware, brushware, DIY, builders merchant and garden supply trades in difficult times since 1843. Since starting to record its sales through EPOS in 1996, JML has sold its 100 millionth EPOS-recorded retail product in the UK and has ambitious plans to double sales in the next three years. The company will also be growing its investment in its growing range of products. "We expect to sell the next 100 million units in a much shorter space of time," says JML's ceo Ken Daly, who says that seven out of ten UK households have a JML product in their home, with a JML product sold every two seconds. He states: "Our 100 millionth UK sale demonstrates the affection with which the British public holds the JML brand." *JML has recently invested heavily in its direct response TV (DRTV), utilising its infomercial production for its online offerings too. The company has entered into a partnership with major Los Angeles production house, Scarpaci/Kelly and appointed three senior positions in its direct-toconsumer department, including Sophie Smithers as head of direct sales and marketing.

Gary's cycling challenge It pays to display Potters Cookshop, Hockley, Webbs of Tenterden and North Yorkshire’s Prillys Pantry are among the six winners of the recent Portmeirion Group/Wrendale Designs display competition, along with Heart of the Home, The Hollies Farm Shop and Bromley & Co. Each of the winning shops has been awarded £300 worth of Royal Worcester Wrendale Designs stock, £100 Portmeirion Group vouchers for the team who created the display and a winner certificate. The judges tasked with deciding on the winners were Hannah Dale, founder and designer of Wrendale Designs, Phil Atherton, Portmeirion Group’s sales & marketing director and Sue Marks, PH contributor and editor of PH's sister magazine, Progressive Gifts & Home. I was truly blown away.” The competition was also a success on social media with fans taking part in a ‘selfie contest’ using the retailer’s displays as a background. With over 50 entries via Instagram and Facebook, the campaign received thousands of ‘likes’ with customers sharing their posts and showing their love for Royal Worcester Wrendale Designs and their local stores.

üutensil founder and designer Gavin Reay recently got on his bike to cycle 1500 miles in order to raise £1,500 for young people’s learning disabilities charity Halow. “The weather turned a bit wintry on us before we set off, but that just made it all the more fun,” comments Gavin. “I’ve already had great support from colleagues in the industry but any further donations would be gratefully received and will all help with the excellent work Halow does to help young people with learning disabilities live independently. The charity counts former Formula One driver Damon Hill as a trustee and founder member (his son Ollie is the O in Halow) and has raised nearly £500,000 over six years. Potters Cookshop expands

The newly expanded Potters Cookshop, Hockley, relaunched with a whole week of celebratory activity. The week culminated on Easter Saturday with “an incredible turnout” for demonstrations in Potter’s kitchen by Candice Brown, winner of The Great British Bake Off 2016. The Cookshop (adjacent to Potters’ original hardware and DIY shop) has six extra windows, bringing its total to 14, facing out to a busy roundabout. “We’ve gained just under half our previous space but it looks a look a lot bigger,” notes director, Tom Carter, adding, “It looks sensational.” The expansion has resulted in a huge investment in new stock, equating to 35 palettes, says Tom. He explains: “We have increased our cookware bays from three to nine, and bakeware from two to five bays. We also have more glassware and more of a focus on giftware, particularly impulse purchases.” Tom highlights booming sales of Katie Alice and V&A brands from Creative Tops. The shop has increased its cutlery offering, stocking Arthur Price, Viners from The Rayware Group and Judge from Horwood. New fixtures include Kuhn Rikon, Joseph Joseph, Jamie Oliver, a second Paul Hollywood stand, Jeremy Pang’s School of Wok, Mason Cash and Denby. Many have built in screens to show products in action, while the Cookshop now has a TV license and large TV installed, running all day, “playing episodes of Bake Off, MasterChef, Saturday Kitchen and so on,” Tom reports. The shop also has coffee machines set up for customers to try. The launch week featured demonstrations by Jeremy Pang from The School of Wok (with his range from Dexam) as well as Denby (also running a “competition to guess how many mugs hold up a bus”) and Sage, with coffee and hot chocolate to taste. On Friday, Potters’ own Alison Hobbs entertained the crowds demonstrating how to make roses and crocus decorations using Nifty Nozzles. On Saturday, Bake Off star Candice spent four hours in the shop, making her pistachio biscuits and banoffee pie recipe. The baker also presented a prize to the winner of a children’s baking competition. “Candice was lovely – very down to earth and she loves the shop,” says Tom, With offers and competitions running throughout the week, Tom reports: “We had Christmas takings, and it is continuing to be good.” Potters is also re-launching its website and will host a demonstration by Ken Hom on June 16.
Housing Units’ teddy donations To tie in with the company's 70th anniversary celebrations, Housing Units’ ceo Nick Fox recently personally delivered 70 Norman the Doorman teddy bears to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital’s Ward 84.(Norman is the much loved mascot of the home furnishings store which is based in Failsworth). Currently sold within the store and online, a proportion of every Norman the Doorman teddy bear sale is donated to children’s cancer research charity Kidscan. Housing Units’ successful partnership with Kidscan has resulted in the store raising £23,000 over the two-year period since the partnership began in April 2015. The teddy bear presentation was inspired by Kidscan’s close connection to the children of Ward 84. The charity has a long standing relationship with the ward of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, with Kidscan patient ambassador Gracie McCall having been treated there before she recently passed away following a three year battle with a rare cancerous brain tumour. “Supporting Kidscan’s vital work is something we’re very proud of here at Housing Units," stated Nick. "Helping to ensure Kidscan can continue with its ground breaking research means we’re one step closer to a world where every child is given their best chance to not only survive but thrive too. Surprising the brave and inspirational children of Ward 84 with our Norman the Doorman teddy bears was a touching experience I’ll never forget.”
Sunita’s tidy sink British mum turned inventor, Sunita Gill has launched the Pavara Sink Tidy, having created the product out of frustration. She reflects that: “There was nothing on the market to store the things that we use most frequently in the kitchen, such as washing up liquid, hand soap and sponges. This was not only potentially unhygienic, but also didn’t fit with the aesthetic that I had spent so long trying to achieve for my kitchen.” Sunita’s glossy sink tidy conceals washing-up products when not in use, and has a drainage system for wet sponges to remove excess water and prevent limescale, as well as germ, build up. Sunita admits:”When I began my journey four years ago, I wasn’t looking to start a business. I was simply trying to find a solution to a problem. At Essentials, we definitely think the term should be ‘shop theft’ as ‘lift’ sounds like a kid picking up a Mars bar. Our current hassle is people picking up stuff and then taking it straight to the counter and demanding a refund. We’re a smaller shop so we’ve always tended to trust people without receipts. However, recently I was able to look back on EPOS and say, “We haven’t sold one of these for a year!â€?â€? Matt continues: “ We’ve had someone walk out with a steam generator iron. We ran after him and demanded it back – he was sitting waiting for a bus - but we don’t necessarily think about our own safety. The police seem to be taking things more seriously as they have asked us to report everything. However, even when we had a prosecution (after an off duty police officer saw a woman taking a ÂŁ10 hand blender) it was very frustrating. I lost a whole morning in court, the woman didn’t turn up and only got fined ÂŁ20 or ÂŁ30.â€? l Liz Lawson, md of Lawsons, Devon, observes: “The police are not interested in shop theft and expect the retailers to cope with this problem. In Plymouth we have PARC (Plymouth Against Retail Crime) paid for by the BID (Business Improvement District) and we identify prolific thieves and circulate their photographs to all PARC members. When they are caught stealing, if they have already been identified by PARC, this usually ensures they get a custodial sentence – so at least they are off the streets for a short while.â€? She adds: “One thing that does seem unjust is that you get charged extra on your business rates if you install CCTV in your shop. bira sets out 'manifesto' As soon as a date for the General Election was confirmed, bira was fast off the mark in issuing a passionate plea that all parties should pledge their support for independent retailers. The Association said it wanted political parties to commit to implementing a business rates threshold, and also lobbied for politicians to commit to a serious review regarding parking. bira also encouraged parties to allow the Low Pay Commission to lead an independent process of setting wage rates, so that workers are rewarded for their endeavours and that businesses can continue to succeed and provide jobs. While the retail sector currently accounts for 5.7% of gross domestic product, bira pointed out that this is not guaranteed to continue in the future unless the incoming government helps to ensure that Britain will not be hit with a stalling economy. l For more bira news, see pages 18-19.

Exposing shop “theft� “Ban the word shoplift and use the term, shop theft,� was the message from Neil Mackay from independent retailer Mackays of Cambridge, addressing the bira conference (May 8 - see bira news pages 18-19). Neil’s mission to change public perceptions of shop theft coincides with the launch & & ' ( & of a new programme from CAER to change thieves’ perception of their actions, and cut down on repeat crimes (see linked story). In a presentation that resonated with fellow retailers (see linked viewpoints), ! " # Neil talked about the frustration and real costs of shop theft for his family

Mackays’ fight against theft includes its installation of 35 cameras, security tags, a redesign of the shop to reduce hidden corners, joining a local action group and extra training for staff. The shop also started its own Rogue’s Gallery (with posters of thieves caught on camera, with lines across their faces), with nicknames including “Mr Brabantia Bin Manâ€? (for a bin thief). Mackay’s Rogue's Gallery reached international fame due to its dim-witted magnet thief (see photo caption). Neil has also been working alongside Retail Loss Prevention in the development of its CAER scheme to “attack the problem of the opportunist,â€? with a mobile correspondence course that Neil likens to a “speed awareness courseâ€? (see linked story). Urging bira members to join his mission to change public perception, Neil concluded by acknowledging: “You try and get 1-2% from your suppliers when quite often 4% is going out the door.â€?
Changing thieves’ minds? Civil recovery company, Retail Loss Prevention (RLP) is introducing the Crime Awareness Education Restitution (CAER) programme. This provides retailers with “an alternative form of restitution when they have been victim to a wrongdoing, such as theft,� explains RLP’s Wendy Moore. Mobile correspondence courses provide perpetrators “with a greater awareness of their actions, of how the incident affects themselves, the business and society as a whole.� Wendy notes that the CAER programme has already gained interest from independent retailers, as well as enthusiasm from “police forces across the country that require a resource saving method which also provides a rehabilitation service effective in reducing crime at this level.� For more information on CAER, contact Wendy Moore wmoore@lossprevention.co.uk
A housewares legend retires Having been at Thomas Plant - now KitchenCraft - for well over four decades, retirement is beckoning for its managing director, and key industry figure, Richard Plant. He believes that now is an excellent time to retire and enjoy his many other interests. “Although very much looking forward to retirement I will miss the passion and enthusiasm I have encountered among customers and other suppliers for what is a fabulous industry to work in,� states Richard. “The industry, the customers, the company and my colleagues have been my life so far and I will miss you all very much.� As a family run business, Kitchen Craft has been a part of Richard's life for some 43 years, with his memories stretching back to his days as a youngster, going into the office to help his father and grandfather get the business off the ground. Subsequently, Richard, along with his cousin, Peter, brother Andrew and nephew, Daniel, have continued to grow the business, turning it into the success that it is today. Following Richard's retirement, Darren Nickolls, who has been working alongside Richard for the past 15 years, will take over as sales director. Cold Brew gets a warm reception Samples of cold brew coffee made from KitchenAid’s new Cold Brew Coffee Maker went down a treat during the warm weather at the recent London Coffee Festival. While cold brew coffee can be added to hot water for a long coffee, coffee lovers enjoyed a refreshingly Cold Brew Tonic from KitchenAid’s stand at the festival. Matt Innes, general manager, Beam Group commented on the successful launch at the festival, which attracted over 30,000 sophisticated coffee lovers with Trade visitor numbers increasing by 10%: “The speciality coffee industry is growing at an unprecedented rate as increasing numbers of coffee aficionados seek a diverse choice of freshly roasted coffees to meet their discerning palates.” He continued:” Feedback from customers at the festival has been tremendous. Confirming that the company is a cut above the rest, Robert Welch Designs has received a second consecutive Queen’s Award - this time, for Enterprise in Innovation, the UK’s highest accolade for business success. The award is in recognition of the unique integrated sharpening and storage capabilities incorporated into its Signature Knife Block Set, which has resulted in the Signature range making a significant and increasing contribution to the company’s continued growth. To be part of an elite group of Queen’s Award winners for a second year running is a real honour and brings a sense of pride to everyone involved.” l In 2015, Robert Welch Designs turned over £13.75million. Since then, sales have increased by over 5% to £14.5million in 2016. As the latest financial year comes to a close, the company is predicted to announce further sales growth, year on year of around 7.5%.
Sadly missed: John Price OBE John Price, chairman of family owned, third generation Arthur Price died at the end of April aged 88. “He led a crusade most of his life for the cutlery industry and when he set his mind to something he did his best to achieve it," commented his eldest son Simon, Arthur Price's chief executive. "Words people have used to describe him include gracious, gentleman, inspirational, lovely and loyal friend. He was a great grandpa and very proud of his grandchildren.” John (pictured right) joined the family firm in 1949, aged 21, became md in 1951 and chairman in 1974. In 1977, John personally designed cutlery for the supersonic aircraft Concorde and the company was granted its first Royal Warrant. During his long career, John was admitted to various prestigious guilds and received numerous awards.

Customers are being invited to a June* Open House at Dexam which has an extra special twist this year. The company is not only celebrating its milestone 60th anniversary, but is also unveiling a newly revamped showroom to better merchandise the company's brands and categories. As well as new fixtures, visitors will find demo areas as well as display ideas and solutions. Bryony Dyer, Dexam’s managing director, explains: “We have planned our Open House weeks to coincide with Exclusively Housewares so that as many of our retail partners as possible can plan a trip to see us after the show in London. Reflecting on how the company began, director Roger Morgan-Grenville recalls that his father and uncle travelled round the world in the '50s discovering great products for improving the home, and importing them into the UK. "They had a one room office, a high desk, a typewriter and a couple of dogs. Their wives did most of the packing, and their children came in to help - or hinder - at weekends. Their first delivery went to a shop in Ilkley, Yorkshire, which is still a customer to this day. Technology has changed both the kinds of product that we sell, and the way we sell them. But technology doesn’t change everything. Our staff - most of whom weren’t even born when Dexam started - are right at the heart of our company." *The Open House takes place at Dexam's Midhurst HQ from June 12-23.

Hot bed of new ideas Chicago’s International Home +Housewares Show cemented its reputation as an international showcase for creative product development with its most recent edition of Inventors’ Corner, as well as a host of growing businesses based on solution solving in the show’s various halls. Bipan Singh, founder and ceo of Smalt was among the inventors pitching their products to the Inventors’ Revue media panel (which included PH’s Jo Howard along with journalists from Wired, The Chicago Tribune and US housewares trade title HFN). Bipan’s connected gadget, Smalt, is a portion controlled salt dispenser that “makes dining fun”. It can “pair up with your phone to stream your favourite music to set the tone for the party,” as well as enhance the table with ambient mood lighting. Meanwhile, the youngest inventor in the history of the IH+HS, RJ Batts (now aged 14) presented his Tip Tough finger guards, which he created to help his dad, a chef. RJ reflects: “I just wanted my dad to stop cutting his fingers so often. Working together Indies’ strong first quarter Data from bira and LDC shows that across independent retail, more shops were opened than were closed in the first quarter of 2017. This was an increase of 414 shops in the first three months of 2017. These positive figures are supported by cloud-based point of sale software company, Vend. Vend’s customer data shows a 15% increase in sales and retail spending in the first quarter of 2017, compared to the same period last year, based on a sample of 1,000 UK Vend retailers. In London, where Vend has a large concentration of independent retail customers, sales rose by 18% in Q1 compared to last year, although spending only increased by 3%.

I have been voted into this position by the members for another year, after we received some very sad news about the health of Viv Abbott who was due to take the reins. Inspiration and advice Forging strong links with local communities and getting social media savvy were among advice for fellow bira members from Laura Tennison, MBE of JoJo Maman Bébé, speaking at the bira conference (May 8 at the Bristol Marriott Hotel). Laura shared the inspiring story of how she built up her maternity and babywear business from home to 80 stores. Meanwhile, Duncan, Neil and Andrew Mackay of family business, hardware and DIY store, Mackays of Cambridge presented their ‘past, present and future’ for the conference’s retailer address (see linked story). As keynote speaker, Laura emphasised her belief in independents’ vital role in a vibrant high street, exclaiming: “I love the fact that we’re seeing a bit of regeneration.” Laura’s advice included: “Believe in what you sell” (and that it offers “true Above: Laura Tennison speaking at the bira conference. value for money”). Stating, “I don’t think it’s easy being just a bricks and mortar retailer these days,” Laura emphasised the importance of having a social media presence: “It’s so easy to set up an Instagram account…If you can’t do it yourself, find a teenager who can!” Laura also told independent retailers to “get out” into the community at events, “even if it’s a stall at a school fete.” She stressed: “brand building is the most important thing in retail.” Laura highlighted her belief in “allowing other people to be entrepreneurial without a blame culture,” in her business, as well as not being “fixated on figures.” She confessed: “”I’m a very gut feeling type retailer.” Laura advised fellow retailers to “invest in your team,” but also to make potential savings through negotiations and emphasised her preference for “lean stockrooms.” Giving back is also important to Laura through her own charity initiatives. The presentation finished with Laura urging indies to: “Get to know your customers, know their children’s names, let their dogs in if you can bear it.” She concluded that high street independents can provide a valuable “alternative to online,” and that “together we can create a successful British high street.”
Traditional service and bright ideas “One of the benefits of being an independent family business is the ability to react fast and develop niche markets,” stated Neil Mackay, one of the family trio from Mackays of Cambridge at the bira conference. Examples of the retailer’s proactive stance in encouraging footfall include its introduction of DIY courses in its dedicated staff training area. Mackays has also set up an evening street food festival in its car park, attracting over 400 visitors, and is planning outdoor film screenings in Above: Duncan Mackay looked back the car park. over Mackays’ history of adapting to Neil also emphasised the importance of community involvement and changing eras. being “actively involved” with local charities (in Mackays’ case, this includes the local Repair Café). Talking about the future, Neil’s son Andrew reiterated: “We need to be ever more involved in the community, so we are different from the big boys and so, not only are we giving back, but our customers know we care.” Andrew recognised “better informed” consumers with an increasing demand for “speed and convenience,” and emphasised: “We need to fight ever harder for our customers’ attention in an ever noisier market place.” (See News page 13 for Neil’s conference presentation on shop theft).

l Discussing what the recent business rate reforms mean for independent retailers, Mark Radford described the system as “a tax based on Medieval principles,” elaborating: “We’ve got a bricks and mortar tax in a digital age.” Mark also set out bira’s business rates manifesto. l Alan Hawkins, bira ceo reinforced bira’s intentions to keep rates on the government’s agenda and applauded bira president, Vin Vara’s contribution to the debate in media appearances. l As it stands, £22,500 is the highest fine to date for noncompliance in auto enrolment pensions (for Swindon Town FC) – as highlighted by Bryan Stott of Wren Sterling. Bryan urged conference delegates to “take advantage of the bira pension scheme – it is cheaper that the £400 fixed penalty notice fine.” l “Encourage customers who have had a good experience to rate your business,” and “if bad reviews, engage with them,” advised Abbey Oladapo of Google Digital Garage, in his bira conference breakout sessions. He urged delegates to ensure the accuracy of the details (such as opening and closing times) on Google and to make the most of claiming their business (via google.co.uk.business) l Other breakout sessions included insights into retail brand building from Phil Dean of Certain, and advice from Stax on how to start e-commerce ‘with no money, time or stock.’

Conference speaker, Jonathan Reynolds of the Oxford Institute of Retail Management and Said Business School took delegates into a retail future that promises “the certainty of uncertainty.” He questioned how technology such as augmented reality will influence the retail experience, and speculated that the logistical “last mile” of product deliveries may benefit independents that can offer a collection service (this is happening in India for Amazon). Jonathan also predicted opportunities for independents to provide a service for DIY production with the rise of 3D printing. Jonathan emphasised opportunities for indies thanks to the demand for personalisation, authenticity and being closer to local consumers, and so “more responsive to customers’ changing needs.” He concluded: “Independent retailing requires a more creative, flexible and risk-taking approach.” l Picture perfect? Jonathan highlighted Chinese web services company, Baidu‘s prediction that in five years time 50% of web searches will be through images or speech.

Packed forum for Amazon insights Blending in with BHETA Luba Distribution, Planit Products and Melitta UK have all signed up to BHETA membership. Luba Distribution (which serves the UK, Eire and Cyprus) was formed in 2016 by the family run Luba GmbH in Germany, an EU-wide distributor for over 1,000 high quality small domestic appliances including many premium brands. Luba distributes Blendtec – the US brand that describes itself as "the most advanced blender in the world" with four models plus accessory jars. Malvern-based Planit Products is the manufacturer and inventor of toastabags - the convenient way to make a toasted sandwich in a toaster. The company also manufactures Quickasteam microwave steam bags, Quickachips and oven liners. Meanwhile, new BHETA member, Melitta UK is part of the German, family-owned Melitta Group, established in in 1908 when Melitta Bentz invented coffee filter paper. Housewares suppliers were among over 325 delegates at BHETA’s recent networking forum featuring Amazon and leading omnichannel distributor, Decco at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena. The event won rave reviews from delegates and many left “feeling considerably more optimistic about the opportunities that are there for proactive operators,” reports BHETA. Jeff Wemyss, Amazon UK manager for homewares and furniture, along with Oliver Sawer, UK manager for tools and home improvement provided extensive insights into Amazon’s plans to expand with additional suppliers and additional selection. Jeff and Oliver outlined several vendor services and introduced a number of interesting new consumer facing services. Senior members from both buying teams joined the lunchtime networking session with delegates. Amazon is now working with BHETA to build a proactive ‘creating value together’ relationship, including events such as Meet the Buyer, vendor workshops and fulfilment centre visits. Received equally well was the presentation by Charlie Lacey, chief operating officer of Decco. Some 80% of the family company’s turnover is housewares, home and garden products, and the distributor is continuously looking to attract new suppliers and new products to enhance its wholly branded portfolio. Charlie demonstrated how the company’s logistical excellence is a tremendous opportunity. With its partnership approach, offline and online support services, stock holding, fleet, promotional programmes and trade shows, the Decco network could be utilised as a means to penetrate new markets. The forum also featured Daniel Fearnley, head of home at GfK, who outlined the latest consumer data on both online retail and the consumer shopping journey in general. Daniel highlighted practical advice on how suppliers can maximise purchases whatever retail channel. Clive Daley of mdj2 Associates also provided practical solutions for suppliers who are attempting to negotiate the cost implications of fluctuating currency with retail partners. Clive advocated a number of possible strategies including multi-level relationships and value engineering, and discussed collaboration, as well as taking a more aggressive approach when needed. Will we re-think the category title ‘tabletop’ if sitting down at a dinner table to eat is less and less common? PH tucks into some bowl food in order to reflect on some contemporary dining trends, both indoors and in the great outdoors.

Dishing up Bowled over Wherever and whatever we are eating, bowls have become increasingly central to our dining habits. At Denby Pottery, design director, Richard Eaton, acknowledges that: “Bowls can be seen replacing plates for fine dining in Michelin-starred restaurants.” He notes that “relaxed informal dining and casual entertaining at home, along with our increasingly global food tastes have been transition factors.” Bowls accounted for 40% of Denby’s sales in 2015, while dinner plates only accounted for 9%. The company produced 2.8m bowls that year (30% for the UK market and the rest for export). Richard highlights: “the soup/cereal bowl is the most popular bowl in the UK, followed by pasta bowls, but overseas is a slightly different story with the rice bowl being the most popular.” He adds that “souping” has also increased the sales of soup/cereal bowls in the UK and USA. Denby has now launched a ‘storage friendly’ range of four nesting bowls “which all have the same height when comfortably sitting inside one another and can be used for serving or individual use.” According to the likes of Creative Tops and Portmeirion, consumers are using tableware (including bowls) to create

elements of calm in an unsettled world. Katrina Lawton, Creative Tops’ marketing manager observes: “As the outside world becomes increasingly busy, loud and chaotic, socialising is being brought into the comforting and private space of the home.” She continues: “Consumers are embracing more informal and inclusive approaches to entertaining in their homes, using food as a social experience and an event to be shared.” Katrina elaborates: “This is reflected in tabletop with serving bowls, dip dishes and sharing platters casually mixed on the dinner table. As we yearn for more mindful lifestyles and spaces to escape from the bustle of technology, surface patterns take on a diverse and more natural look to complement the casual
spirit of this dining trend.” At Portmeirion, marketing manager, Sara Dickenson highlights the “soft colours” of the new Choices tableware, which are ”perfect for creating hygge in the home,” and “easy to mix and match for those who don’t necessarily have the confidence.” In line with the demands of today’s tabletop consumer, the range comes with eight different sizes of bowls.
Lap-lustre? That’s entertaining Denby has collaborated with food historian, Dr Annie Gray, 2,000 British consumers and ‘influencers’ from the world of food for its research on The Art of Entertaining. Some 87% of those in Denby’s survey regularly host friends and family at home, rising to 93% in the 24-35 age group. The latter hosts dinner parties three or four times a month.' Highlighting changing rituals, Denby reports ‘only a third of people in the UK still lay a traditional table setting and only a quarter opt for a full three courses, with 70% buying in at least one course.’ Meanwhile, a quarter ‘are keeping things very casual, serving food to guests on laps or standing up,’ hence the usefulness of bowls. Denby senior designer, Nicola Wilson reflects on another reason for the ever-increasing popularity of bowls: “Over the last year we have seen a real explosion with bloggers and Instagrammers using social media to show people at home how they can present food. They’ve realised that bowls are a really beautiful piece to present food in.”

Breath of fresh air - the outdoor experience As home entertaining has continued to shift to more casual guises, the patio doors have also opened up! Eddingtons’ marketing manager, Adam Smith observes: “Gardens are increasingly seen as an extension of the home and this has led to interior trends making their way outside, from furniture to tableware.” He continues: “Gone are days of using paper plates and cheap plastic cups when entertaining. Consumers are now looking to create the full indoor dining experience outdoors.” Coupled with this trend is the fact that melamine technology has become more sophisticated, to the extent that Eddingtons’ hand-finished Epicurean range “looks and feels just like ceramic, with a heavy weight and unique mould design.” Addressing new and emerging design trends, the brand has developed five new collections for 2017, with plenty of potential for consumers to “mix and match to create their own bespoke collections,” notes Adam. At Navigate, marketing manager, David Atkinson reflects that while white tableware is often the norm for casual home dining (“allowing our culinary creativity to be showcased on a neutral canvas”) priorities are different for outdoor gatherings. He acknowledges: “At picnics and BBQs there seems to be less emphasis on food presentation and more on creating a setting.” This often involves “using brightly patterned, durable melamine tableware, and lots of zingy coloured drinkware, which adds to the party atmosphere.” David reports: “We have seen a strong growth in this area with designs and colours often linked to topical fashion trends. For example this summer has been all about tropical prints and exotic birds, along with classic coastal colours that reflect our love of the outdoors and the sea.”
Table talking points For those setting their tables for dinner, making a style statement with one aspect of the table is often a priority. Discussing emerging tableware trends in the home, Rowan Harrison at Fairmont & Main observes, “Consumers are looking for something different and are being inspired by the restaurant trend for authentic, crafted-looking pieces.” Hence the company’s introduction of Origins
(“rough outside, smooth inside”) and Raw tableware, “which fits with the interiors trend for exposed wood and metal surfaces, as the tableware itself has subtle bits of metallic to give a shimmer effect.” Meanwhile, Elia’s new Motive & Miravell glassware features “unique shapes for a striking place setting,” points out Adam Walker, sales manager. He observes: “As part of the table setting, height, colour and shape will affect the impact on the

Foods of the future became a closer reality when MOM’s Organic Market (a sustainably minded small grocery store group in the US) recently launched several new protein-rich foods, including Bolognese sauces made from mealworms or crickets. “Not only are items containing insects incredibly nutritious, they can also have a positive impact on our global food supply," said Lisa de Lima, MOM's vice president of produce. O
ne advantage to joining Horwood on the first day of the Spring Fair was “meeting the entire sales team in my first five minutes!” reflects Rob Jones. Besides that, of course, the show furnished Rob with the opportunity to “talk to a huge amount of customers,” with further discussions held at Ambiente just a few days’ later. Rob reports: “I gained a good insight into the business in that first week and since then it has been an interesting few months developing relationships with our customers and looking to identify and create stronger partnerships going forward.” He admits that his initial thoughts about Horwood have been reinforced: “I admire the quality of products we design and distribute – there is nothing we’re not proud of – and this is supported by our customer service and the support they provide to the end consumer.” Meanwhile, Rob’s ‘home work’ has involved trying some of Horwood’s 2,500 skus. “I’ve set up cooking challenges with friends to see who can make the best pie or the best tasting sandwich - using things are the best way to learn about them.” The Judge Pie Maker has become a personal favourite: “It is fun, easy to use and encourages new cooks to make really tasty homemade food.” Rob’s other favourite include James Martin Lamina pans, “which perform excellently. They somehow help make even my cooking tasty!” Rob reflects: “The industry has been
very welcoming, and people are also intrigued to see what we are planning to do.” He comments: “The industry is at a point at the moment where there is a traditional way of doing things, but consumers’ shopping habits are evolving. I’m hearing more and more customers say they want to explore new ways of working, which is very exciting.” Rob admits” “I admire those retailers that are being proactive and pushing boundaries, seeking out new opportunities in recognition that consumers are changing.” On the other hand, Rob adds: “It's frustrating when retailers say the market is bad and footfall has dropped, but they are not doing anything about it.” Analysing exactly what is selling, customer by customer, is essential: “We are looking at a more bespoke approach with our customers.” Rob is also building on Horwood’s social media in conjunction with brand building. He acknowledges: “Horwood is a good trade brand but it’s not the same with consumers. Hence the need to develop our digital platforms, and make it easier to link with our customers’ channels.” A new consumer website is in progress, as well as plans to increase brand elevation in stores. Asked about the biggest challenges for
the industry in the year ahead, Rob replies: “Brexit – it's happening and we have to see it as an opportunity. The key thing is to understand our consumers’ needs and invest in creativity and innovation in the market place.” He elaborates: “It is easy to batten down the hatches but it is vital not to get bogged down with what we’re hearing in the media everyday and see it as an opportunity.” Rob is looking forward to growing Horwood’s export business, and opportunities for bespoke products for different markets, with support from parent company, TKK Prestige. Key markets include the Middle East and the Americas. Meanwhile, in the UK and beyond, Horwoods will continue to invest in its SDA sectors, for example, recognising demand for coffee and catering products. Having started at a trade show, Rob is eager to get back on Horwood’s stand for Exclusively Housewares: “It’s a great time to talk to customers about confirming our plans for Christmas 2017 and planning 2018 and beyond. While we have identified our key focus and potential areas of growth I want to give more consideration to the style trends which will be shared by Scarlet Opus.”

Tool hardy The latest crop of tools and gadgets include some clever, space efficient, fun and possibly lifestyle changing additions to our kitchens. PH gets a handle on developments in kitchen utensils, mills and handheld gadgetry. Space saving multi-taskers How many of us can confess to drawers or pots that are crammed full of kitchen tools and gadgets? It was an aversion to other people’s “pots full of untidy things” that inspired designer Amos Marchant to create a series of utensils that slot together to take up minimum storage. These are part of the Venn range from Captivate Brands and include an interlocking ladle, strainer, spatula, masher, tongs and spoon. Launching 45 products from Venn at Top Drawer earlier this year, Captivate’s Kevin McKay explained: “Venn has lots of clever multifunctional features, such as a spaghetti measure in the handle of the kitchen scissors.” Kuhn Rikon has space efficiency in mind with new attachments for its multi-million selling Swiss Peelers. In addition to a new peeler with a Julienne blade, the attachments enable home cooks to create vegetable spirals and strips (without the need for bulky preparation tools). Natalie Godfrey, Kuhn Rikon’s sales and marketing associate explains: “Simply press the attachments onto the peeler and you are ready. With the spiral peeler you can create elegant vegetable spaghetti or

vegetable strips that make an attractive garnish or addition to a meal.” New Soda’s Big Peeler (with its 50% bigger blade) provides a solution to peeling large vegetables such as squash, pumpkin and celeriac in addition to regular spud and carrot preparation. Damon Meredith, director of New Soda explains that the multi-tasking capacity of the Big Peeler is the unintended result of its designer’s desire to create “a trendy peeler – he wasn’t thinking about larger vegetables!” Meanwhile, multifunctionality is a key selling point for Mason Cash’s
new baking tools. According to Paul Donnelly, Mason Cash brand manager, the Innovative Kitchen utensils appeal to “the busy baker of today, who desires products which are easy to use, space, time and money saving.” He also notes that

Saviours of wine Regarded as an icon of barware by many, the Vacuum Wine Saver was Vacu Vin’s first invention, “released for general sale nearly 31 years ago – selling in excess of 40 million units worldwide, and still featuring as a top seller in our assortment today,” reports the International Innovation Company’s Julieanne Boyce. She adds, “The design has not changed at all, but technically an audible click noise was added to advise customers once the correct volume of air had been extracted.” The Vacuum Wine Saver will reach an even wider audience under its new The Wine Show branding, with TV’s The Wine Show presenter, Joe Fattorini an enduring fan of the product. Vacu Vin’s Wine Saver has also gained some notoriety when one of The Wine Show’s co-stars, Matthew Reece jokingly put the pump on Joe’s head, revealing a red mark on its removal. Joe reflects that, “The red mark showed how strong the pump is,” but adds that when many people see him they now assume that the Wine Saver is to blame for a pre-existing bump on his head! In addition to Joe’s professional life (as a wine merchant for 20 years prior to the TV show) the Wine Saver is a favourite gadget at home. Joe admits that he and his fiancée “never finish a bottle of wine in a night,” adding, “We have three or four bottles open at a time, and enjoy different wines with different courses.” Preserving opened bottles of wine is the mission for the Coravin Wine System – its latest models, particularly appealing for wine connoisseurs, with be on show at Exclusively Housewares. Meanwhile, Gary Growden launched Natural Storage Systems’ Duckit in Inventors’ Corner at Chicago’s IH+HS. The Duckit is an airtight silicone stopper for wine bottles, which enables the insertion of Natural Preserve nitrogen via a stainless steel straw. Gary explains: “Using the Duckit to remove oxygen and C02 preserves the wine’s flavour, colour and aroma.” The IH+HS’ Inventors’ Corner also showcased The Wand by PureWine – a one-use stick that absorbs histamines and sulfite preservatives from a glass of wine, as well as aerating it. The Wand helps to alleviate unpleasant reactions such as headaches, congestion and skin rashes, and has been developed over five years by wine lovers, David and Derek Matthews.

Natural selections Reflecting the trend for natural materials in the kitchen, T&G’s marketing manager, Jenny Handley reports on the popularity of its new Opera CrushGrind mills in antique beech and ash. Meanwhile, sales of T&G’s CrushGrind Spice Mills are benefiting from consumers’ increased awareness of the health benefits of herbs and spices as well as the appreciation of fresh flavour. Jenny notes: “These mills extract the natural oils, adding so much more to a dish.” Similarly, fresh herb lovers have a new opportunity to flavour their home-cooked dishes all year round, thanks to the Cole and Mason Frozen Herb Mill. The mill comes with three herb storage containers that can be placed in the freezer. The healthy eating message is prominent with KitchenCraft’s farmers’ market style display crates
for its Healthy Eating Collection tools and gadgets (which made an impact at Spring Fair earlier this year). The tools and gadgets come in an array of vibrant colours - green, yellow, red and orange, relating to the fruit and vegetables they are designed to work with. New concept for coffee Barista & Co’s new Brew Stick (from nixee) sets out to change consumer coffee rituals by providing an easy alternative to using instant granules. The filter ball at the end of the Brew Stick is designed to hold ground coffee, as nixee’s managing director, James Gray explains: “You dip the Brew Stick into the hot water, give it a good stir and then leave it to brew for four minutes for the same result as cafetiere coffee.” He adds: “The UK is obsessed with instant coffee, but this makes brewing a real cup of coffee very simple.” However, the development of the Brew Stick has been far from simple, involving a quest for the perfect size of filter. James reports: “People ask if they can use a tea infuser to brew coffee but the answer is ‘no’ as it leaves sediment. The Brew Stick filter is fine but not too fine for coffee infusion.” Barista & Co has been working with a UK factory “that makes all sorts of filters, including ones for Formula 1 cars.” James reflects: “It has been really valuable to be able to talk face to face at the factory and constantly test the product to find the perfect filter.” Barista & Co intends to spread the word about making real coffee with the Brew Stick with a #ditchtheinstant campaign. The innovative new tool was revealed at Ambiente earlier this year and will be showcased at Exclusively Housewares.

I am now the proud owner of two shops. Contracts were finally signed on Richard Dare in Primrose Hill at the beginning of April, which just so happened to coincide with the kids being on school holidays - ideal timing! So, after a week in Devon with the kids, remotely sorting out the basics of the new shop while trying to locate a fish in a rockpool and build a sandcastle, it was time to get cracking.
Dare-ing DIY I had planned a quick sort out and a lick of paint and to then be able to reopen Richard Dare within a couple of weeks. However, this was not meant to be! On my first day at the shop after the team had moved the stock, I decided to ‘quickly remove a partition wall’ in one of the rooms downstairs to open up the space. This in turn opened up a hidden damp problem, which we have spent the last two weeks resolving. I did, however, uncover a blocked up window that now lets natural light into the basement. Every cloud…! It turns out I’m a bit DIY obsessed too, so, cheered on and massively supported by Team DIY (Sonia and Fatima) we have totally gutted the whole shop and are basically starting from scratch. Rubbish removal, lifting floors, sanding, filling holes, painting and electrics are all now in our repertoire. The response to our DIY prowess has been met with pure fascination from the builders doing the damp proofing who stand around watching us work, astonished that I am the boss and also labouring and also at our ability to actually do the work and to a reasonably high standard. We
have all received job offers so there’s always the building trade to fall back on for us if this all goes bottoms up! We are also spending large chunks of our days talking to our new customers. They are a mixed eclectic bunch. They are very different to our Stoke Newington customer and even though I

knew that beforehand, it still comes as a surprise. They all appear to have an opinion and don’t feel the need to hold back on sharing any aspect of it with you. One of my favourites so far has been “if you don’t continue to sell the yellow handled knives then I will bad mouth you all around town” which feels most

through the worst and the demolition has ended and we are moving onto the good stuff. We are painting and putting in new lighting and deciding on new shelving, and making it look like a shop again. Only then will we be able to relook at the stock that came with the business and start to plan out what we need to add for our opening (scheduled for the end of May). Meanwhile, Prep is being ever so slightly neglected but I’m trying to make sure I keep on top of it. I am spending a day a week there, generally at the weekends to make sure I know what is going on. It is going to be a tricky transition learning how to run two shops, but I’m very lucky I have a strong team supporting me and telling me what to do when I’m slacking. Notes from Chicago My wife Carol and I were having a discussion before Christmas about the state of retailing (heavy subject, I know, but I was on my second gin!) We were thinking about what makes us stand out from the crowded market place, and how independent retailers need to stock something other than the same brands as department stores. We concluded that the only way to find that ‘something different’ was to go and look! That is when we started planning our busy and far-flung trade show schedule. Frankfurt was our first port of call after the UK. Ambiente offers hall upon hall of homewares and the amount of choice there is mind-boggling. However, it is so much easier than you may think to trade with mainland Europe. Orders were placed with various companies, and funnily enough we are not the first retailer from overseas that they had dealt with, and they know exactly what they are doing. So now we deal with suppliers in Germany, Denmark, Poland, Holland and Italy, oh and two from the UK that we had not dealt with before! I was back in store just a few days after Ambiente and the first orders

By the end of the ‘spring’ show season, La Cookshop had clocked up Harrogate, Top Drawer, Spring Fair, Ambiente and Chicago. Yes, I said Chicago, and I hear you thinking, “Why did a retailer from Northumberland go all the way to Chicago?” began to arrive. Others were scheduled for later in the Spring and some are for Christmas for delivery in September. Minimum orders in some cases are 100 Euros! A few weeks later, Carol and I were off to Chicago for its International Home + Housewares Show. Again the experience was different; the company stands in most cases were not as grand as many of those at Ambiente, but they still attracted the customers and again I placed orders with new suppliers. Again, the process is easier than you might think. The first US supplier we ordered from said, “Just tell me what you want and we will do the rest,” and it all seemed to fall in to place. The experience at the overseas shows stood out because there was so much theatre on the stands. Companies are interested in showing how good their products are; they have demonstrations of the products and this creates a real buzz (something I felt was sadly lacking from the Spring Fair). In Chicago the demonstrator was me! I took to the induction hob to try out (in a glass cube watched by several bemused show goers), the new technology that Meyer is developing: the Hestan Cue Smart Cooking System. It was extremely easy to follow and I am sure it will create interest when it is launched later in the UK. I was pretty pleased with what I turned out scallops with beurre blanc and apple. Carol
now thinks I should cook like this all the time. No darling! Other new technologies were all over Chicago’s Lakeside Hall with electronic gadgets that do almost everything. The robotic BBQ brush was amusing - whether it will make it across the pond is another matter, which is another interesting thing about visiting shows overseas. You see products that may never come here for one reason or another, and it broadens our horizons. Another benefit of travel is that you get to see different retailers and observe how the retail markets are so diverse, and constantly changing, as ours is here. The changes in the States are enormous and not necessarily good either - the move away from bricks and mortar towards online has got to the point where chains are closing hundred of stores that are not needed any more. Going back to being needed by our customers, and finding points of difference to catch their attention, can I say that anyone who has thought overseas shows are not for them should just give them a try. You might be pleasantly surprised. Your first step should be Ambiente in Frankfurt. Free travel for show visitors on trains during the fair makes staying out of Frankfurt more reasonable. We stay in Wiesbaden, which is a 35-minute train ride from the halls. I am always at the end of a telephone for anyone who wants some advice; working together and helping each other is how we succeed.

So, in the first of a brand new feature that takes a peak into individual’s own kitchens, PH asks independent cookshop co-owner, Sarah Wood of Trevor Mottram in Tunbridge Wells about trade, good advice and personal ‘must haves’. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR KITCHEN? “We moved to this house four years ago and the kitchen is a Wickes own brand re-painted to tide us over. It is a funny shape but works better than some of the posh kitchens I have had. It is the first place you come to in the house, put your bag down and open a bottle of wine. We have a separate dining room which Alan and I use most days, but everyone that comes here ends up sitting on the kitchen stools with a glass of wine, talking while one of us prepares dinner. It’s an informal entertaining space.”
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DISHES TO COOK OR PREPARE IN YOUR KITCHEN?

“Alan’s favourite is Chinese and he is very good at it, while I like all sorts of strange things. Last weekend, my son James requested Thai Scallops and Monkfish Curry and I’m cooking another Thai dish with belly of pork strips tonight. I like a lot of French dishes as well as Beef Wellington and a lot of ‘one pots’ like paella and kedgeree.”
WHAT ARE YOUR ‘TOP FIVE’ PIECES OF KITCHENWARE THAT YOU WOULDN'T DO WITHOUT? “There is so much, but the things we use all the time include Wüsthof knives, the Scanpan CTX Chef’s Pan, Pentole saucepans, my Bamix, with the chop pot underneath it and Jars Celeste black tableware as everything looks fabulous on it. Oh, and Alan wouldn’t be without his carbon Wok from Dexam’s School of Wok range.”

WHAT PIECE OF KITCHENWARE HAS BEEN AROUND THE LONGEST (AND WHERE WAS IT FROM)? “Copper pieces my father had at catering college. My Pillivuyt butter dish must be around 30 years old, as well as a Pillivuyt gravy separator, which was my mother’s. Like much of my cookware, I have had my Pentole pans for 19 years.”
WHAT IS THE MOST RECENT ADDITION TO YOUR KITCHEN? “A Rösle thermometer with the control panel on the outside - we’ve upgraded to this and like it. Also, a sample of an Eva Solo White Ceramic Saute Pan that I’m trying out.”

HOW ARE YOU ATTRACTING FOOTFALL? “We’re not doing anything particularly different. It’s about Facebook and Twitter and also trying to engage with restaurants for sales as they’re making money. We’ve got a restaurant in London coming to collect an order of plates this week.”
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN HOUSEWARES RETAILING? “You need lots of enthusiasm and energy. And don’t come to Tunbridge Wells!”
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN IN RETAILING?

“Trust your gut. Ignore what other people are saying about trends and do what you think is right - you know your customers.”

“That we all like each other 90% of the time. Independents are just far enough apart not to be secretive. Take the Cook@ Group (the collaborative group of independent cookshops) – we are all completely open with each other about how we are doing, what’s selling and what’s not. I have also made a lot of really good friends in the industry."
