Welcome

From the President Dear Friends, Welcome back to 1985 – when Back to the Future was leading the box office, Wham! was tops on the Billboard charts, and LIMA was introduced to the licensing community! We are excited to have you join us this evening as we celebrate LIMA’s 30th Anniversary and honor the best of licensing’s innovations, creativity and excellence with the 2015 LIMA Licensing Awards. We also recognize the esteemed career of our treasured colleague Cheryl Stoebenau, who will be inducted into the Licensing Hall of Fame. Looking back on three decades of supporting and helping to grow the industry, LIMA is truly delighted to see all that we and the licensing community have achieved. The industry has evolved immeasurably since 1985, in its structure, scope of products, and the overall retail landscape. LIMA recognizes that licensing is always expanding and advancing – and it remains our goal to expand and advance alongside the amazing people who make up our industry. We are proud of all we have accomplished in the last 30 years and we look ahead to the next 30 with excitement for all that lies ahead. Tonight we gather not only to honor the Awards winners, but to celebrate our industry as a whole – our triumphs, our legacies, and how far we have come since 1985! Thank you for being a part of LIMA’s ongoing history and congratulations to all of this evening’s nominees. Charles Riotto President LIMA

Talented bunch Our host for this year’s awards is Jim Tavare, an internationally acclaimed actor and comedian. Whichever side of the Atlantic from which you hail, you might recognize him – be it from the comedy scene (Jim co-wrote and starred in ITV's 'The Sketch Show' and is a winner of the US ‘International Search’ competition) or from his acting (he starred in ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban‘ as Tom the Innkeeper, and has appeared in CBS’ ‘Wings’ and Showtime’s ‘Californication’, among others), he is pretty memorable, especially as he is often accompanied by a double bass. British born, but now residing in LA, he was a perfect choice for the LIMA International Licensing Awards. A special thank you to the world-renowned Harlem Globetrotters for kicking off our Awards Ceremony with an amazing performance! For over 85 years, they have entertained audiences around the globe – and tonight they bring their unique talents to our stage!

Collective Efforts And Thank Yous As with most things in life and business, the LIMA International Licensing Awards are the result of a whole host of people and companies pulling together, to enter, judge and create the awards ceremony. Thanks to: everyone who entered and voted; the LIMA Awards Committee; LIMA staffers Louise Caron and Christina Jordan; Erik Motta NYC (for the charity video production); Max Publishing, (for the branding and keepsake tribute book); Max Live Events (for the event production); Creative Concepts (for the trophies) and of course, all of you for being here to see it all.

LIMA’s 30th Anniversary

Three Decades And Counting! Back in 1985, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and Diana Ross joined with other top performers to make history with the charity anthem ‘We are The World’. In that same year the licensing industry was given its own global voice – as LIMA (the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association) was founded. In the same year that Back to the Future premiered, another ‘blockbuster’ made its debut, one that was to help leverage IP like never before; transcend geographical boundaries; unite, grow and educate a strong professional fraternity; and raise millions of dollars for charity. Over the last three decades LIMA has become a global beacon for the licensing industry, but it has its sights firmly set on galvanizing further growth opportunities to take licensing’s ‘beam’ even wider. “I truly believe the biggest and best days are still ahead of us,” says Charles Riotto, president of LIMA for the last 18 years. Paying tribute to LIMA’s founders, he said: “The tenacious efforts of a small group of visionaries laid the solid foundations upon which we have been able to build LIMA into what has become the focal point of this multi-billion dollar industry.” Through its three cornerstones networking, information and

education - LIMA has developed a host of initiatives around the world, that will see it marking many more successful milestones for our wonderful industry. Summing up the LIMA mission for the future, Charles said: “The key is to bring more companies into licensing - brand owners, licensees and retailers - so that the industry will continue to grow, both geographically and in volume for many decades to come.”

The Early Vision Thousands of licensing professionals all over the world have a lot to thank Murray Altchuler for as he was not only the founder of LIMA, but also steered the Association in its formative years to provide a solid foundation. A WWII Army veteran, Murray began his licensing career in the early 1960s at Licensing Corp. of America – the forerunner to Warner Bros. Consumer Products. In 1979 he co-founded and became President of the Licensing Industry Association, an organization of licensors and agents. He presided over the merger of the LIA with the Licensed Merchandisers’ Association (LMA) in 1985 to form LIMA, and became its first executive director. Murray retired from LIMA in December 1997, handing over the LIMA reins to Charles Riotto who joined as president. In December 2012, Murray passed away at the age of 87. When asked for her thoughts on Murray, Louise Caron – who worked beside him for 15 years – said that “Mur-man, as he was affectionately known, was a good man – he had high expectations, was fair, and always had a kind word. Even after his retirement, he kept up with LIMA and was so proud of the direction that the Association and the industry as a whole were taking. He had full confidence in LIMA – he was not surprised at our continued success and would expect nothing less for the future.”

The Global Reach

Education And Information “Education is key to this industry’s present and future,” states Charles. “A continuing challenge is to provide resources which inspire and inform, convey best practices and help people take advantage of the knowledge that already exists.” LIMA’s all encompassing education program includes: l Its involvement in keynote addresses and seminar programs during trade shows. At this year’s Licensing Expo, for example, in addition to the executive keynote panel ‘Where is Retail Headed and How Will We Get There?’, LIMA has developed a new series of short, interactive round-table discussions focusing on all manner of industry topics. l Online webinars provide members with information on a broad range of topics, from understanding a licensing agreement to presenting to retail, how to value a brand to environmental compliance. l The Coursework in Licensing Studies program is a year-long course which provides a 360 degree view of the industry. Elsewhere in the world, links have been forged with the

LIMA is now a truly global organization with over 1,000 members based all over the world, and supported by the Association’s offices in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, China and Australia, as well as by its network of representatives in the Middle East, India, Spain, Turkey, Italy and Korea. “It is a far cry from 15 years ago, when only a small proportion of our membership was from outside the US. Now 50 percent of our members are based overseas. Encouragingly, this is not because the US membership is shrinking, but due to significant growth internationally,” Above: LIMA’s global reach means it has a high profile at trade exhibitions all around the world. says Charles.

University of Hong Kong for a similar formalized education program while through LIMA’s UK offices, a thriving Licensing Essentials course for new professionals takes place each spring. l Building on the market information LIMA provides, it has recently commissioned a Global Licensing Survey, which will deliver invaluable insight into the size and scope of licensing throughout the world. LIMA launched the Kidz Global Survey last year, which provides regular updates for members on the world’s top 30 children’s brands.

There, Right From The Start Louise Q. Caron, LIMA’s senior vice president, member relations knows a thing or two about the Association – seeing as she was the very first employee. “My first job out of school was working with Murray Altchuler (LIMA’s co-founder) at Licensing Corp. of America. When he told me of the plans to form LIMA and asked if I would come on board, I remember thinking ‘If Murray believes it can succeed, then it will!' So I decided to give it a go and dive in head first. “We started out as a two-person office based in a converted townhouse. At the time we had only 150 members, mostly from the US, and from there I set about recruiting members, which is still a part of my role today. When I look at LIMA now, with over 1,000 members from 35 countries and worldwide offices, I genuinely feel awestruck at our growth and am so proud of our Association. We’ve come a long way since those early days and, through the support of our members, have been able to achieve so much – and there is still so much to look forward to! I still love my job and am so glad that I ‘gave it a go’ three decades ago!”

The New LIMA Board Helping to ensure the ongoing success of LIMA and the licensing industry, is the Board of Directors. Newly elected members to this year’s Board of Directors include: * Richard Barry, EVP, Chief Merchandising Officer, Toys“R”Us, Inc. * David Buckley, President, Copyrights Asia Limited * Elise Contarsy, Vice President, Brand Licensing, Meredith Corporation * Linne Kimball, Vice President, IMG Licensing * Ted Larkins, SVP/GM, CPLG (Copyright Promotions Licensing Group) North America * Maria Del Carmen Rotter Alday, Managing Director/EVP, Televisa Consumer Products Commenting, Charles Riotto. LIMA President said: “This year’s slate truly reflects the depth and breadth of our industry. It enhances member representation in international markets as well as in the retail, media, lifestyle branding and licensee segments.”

Being Super To A Hero “Through the generosity of the licensing industry, over $5.5 million has been raised for Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation since 2004. But until there is a cure, much work will remain,” comments Christina Jordan, LIMA’s director of marketing. As part of its 2015 campaign, LIMA has urged the industry to “Be Super to a Hero” to provide a better tomorrow for brave children battling cancer. The proceeds from the advertisements in this keepsake publication mean LIMA is on course to meet its $1 million 2015 target for this amazing charity.

hildren of all ages, from all corners of the world, are diagnosed with brain tumors each day. They so bravely face the battle of a lifetime, when their lives have only just begun. They fight with the fearlessness and resiliency of youth – and with the hope that tomorrow will bring change. We, the licensing community, have the power to help change what a child’s cancer diagnosis will mean. LIMA is committed to raising an additional $5 million to fund the CBTF Tissue Consortium – a collaborative research effort by doctors from five hospitals working to analyze tissue samples. Through analysis, these doctors will be able to find the underlying causes of these cancers, test groundbreaking treatments, and improve the long-term outlook for survivors. Since the

Why CBTF? Jenna Kamil was five years old when, in 1997 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. During her treatment the community rallied around Jenna and her family, including Iconix’s Leigh Anne Brodsky whose own children attended school with her. Jenna had several operations, experienced a period of remission for ten months, but sadly her cancer returned and on May 12, 1999 at the age of seven, she lost her battle. Fast forward to 2004 when LIMA – on whose Board of Directors Leigh Anne was a member – was looking for a new charity partner. LIMA was seeking a charity where the funds raised would truly make a difference. Specifically, the focus was on smaller charities who would be able to benefit from our involvement and direct investment. Because so much revenue of LIMA member companies comes from the sale of products and services to children, the Board wanted to associate with a charity that gave back to kids. After a careful vetting process of many worthy charities, the LIMA Board of Directors selected CBTF as its Charity of Choice. This year’s Hall of Fame inductee, Cheryl Stoebenau, together with Leigh Anne, co-chair the LIMA Charity Committee each year.

As Charles Riotto, LIMA President comments about the relationship with the Foundation: “LIMA’s affiliation with the CBTF and the wonderful work they do for children with brain and spinal cord tumors has been a source of great pride for us as an organization.”

licensing community began funding the institutions in the Consortium, tissue samples per patient have increased 500%!! LIMA is the only corporate sponsor of the Tissue Consortium and 100% of the money donated to CBTF goes directly to this vital

research. Without the generosity of the licensing community, the opportunity would not exist to find a cure for the deadliest children’s cancer. To learn more about donating to CBTF,

The Final Countdown

The Judging Process A credible awards program relies on two key elements – a high caliber of entries/nominations and a judging process of total integrity. The LIMA International Licensing Awards holds its head high on both counts. Here, we explain how the finalists and winners are arrived at for these prestigious awards.

The Awards Categories Inset: The LIMA Awards The entry submissions are made Committee, incognito at the from licensors, agents, licensees awards meeting in March. and retailers. Each year, a dedicated committee comprising 18 global industry experts (whose identities remain anonymous) acts as the validation and judging panel for the awards. The 2015 Committee met last October to evaluate the proposed online entry form and category definitions. As a reflection of the industry’s evolution, the award category of Film, Television & Entertainment was split into two separate awards - Animated and Live Action. In addition, the online awards ballot was upgraded to include nominee images and video links. The Call for Entries brochures were mailed to the entire industry at the start of the year and the awards program was also featured on the home page of the LIMA website, as well as being promoted in its online newsletters, eblasts and social media. In addition the trade press spread the word. Entrants do not have to be LIMA members to participate. The deadline for entries was Monday, March 2. The Committee met later that month in the LIMA offices and spent a whole day reviewing 336 entries which had come from all over the world to arrive at the 142 finalists/nominees. Incidentally, 28% of the nominees are based outside of the US, from 14 countries. LIMA members were then asked to vote online for the nominees with the results being kept a closely guarded secret until the Awards Ceremony.

The Rising Stars The most successful of licensing professionals all started somewhere. They may have worked their way up the ranks of a company, tried on different hats within the industry until they got their first ‘big promotion’ or successfully started their own business. The Rising Stars awards recognise and encourage young licensing professionals. The criteria for the Rising Stars awards include: l The nominees should be 30 years old and under with 1-7 years of experience. l They should demonstrate a commitment to and passion for the licensing industry. l Be seeking additional professional development opportunities to improve skills. l Have shown innovation in planning and implementing successful licensing strategy as well as demonstrates leadership potential. l Submissions are made online with references.

Hall Of Fame Candidates for the Licensing Hall of Fame must demonstrate continual and outstanding contributions to the licensing industry. Consideration was given to those who have been actively involved in the business of licensing for a minimum of 15 years and whose contributions have ongoing relevance to the industry.

Above: Making its shiny debut this year, as part of the rebranding of the awards is a brand new trophy which has been designed and produced by Conceptual Creations (creators of The Licensing Awards trophies in the UK).

Individual Achievements

The Rising Stars 2015 This year Rising Stars Awards are being presented to two worthy recipients, each of whom have demonstrated a commitment to and passion for the licensing industry.

Stephanie Candiloro Current Position: Licensing Account Manager of Warner Bros Consumer Products, Australia. Stephanie has been working within the licensing industry for the last four years. An insight into Stephanie’s recent licensing achievements: In the space of the last two years Stephanie has gone from a category support role as a Licensing Associate to managing 40 accounts of her own as a Licensing Manager. She has delivered a successful ‘DC Comics Superhero Party’ promotional campaign in ‘Cotton On KIDS’ stores Australia-wide. This apparel-led program cemented Warner Bros.’ strategic partnership with Cotton On Group who has over nine brands, 1,300 stores and 19,000 employees across 16 countries globally. For the campaign, Stephanie worked closely with the rest of the Warner Bros. and Cotton On teams to deliver on design, visual merchandise, in-store interaction, compelling prizing for staff and consumer and an effective social media campaign. Another stand-out contribution from Stephanie was her involvement with Hallmark Cards Australia, when she designed and wrote copy for its miniature ‘Itty-Bitty Greeting’ range. These DC Comic Superhero multi-pack cards empowered young kids with encouraging messages. Stephanie actively seeks out new business and gives fresh eyes to a category. She has been involved in new licensing deals for official Batman postage stamps, luggage, lighting, skateboards, role play weaponry and more.

Milin Shah Current Position: Business development professional for Earthbound Milin has been working in the licensing industry for the last six years.

16

An insight into Milin’s recent licensing achievements: Prior to Milin joining Earthbound, the company had primarily been recognized as a successful direct-to-retail, brand management, product development, and merchandising agency. With MIlin’s input, the agency is now recognized by the industry as a full-service licensing agency for media and entertainment, lifestyle, fashion and corporate brands. Milin’s licensing career thus far includes significant time spent in India spearheading the start-up and growth of a full-service licensing agency, facilitating record-setting licensing and merchandising growth for the Syfy Network due, in large measure, to the success of its Sharknado franchise, and managing Cooking Light Magazine’s rewarding foray into licensed partnerships. For the past four years, Milin has balanced his career with attending law school part-time while maintaining a top 20 percent class rank. Milin graduated from Seton Hall University’s School of Law this past May, receiving the Juris Doctorate with a concentration in Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law. In July, Milin will be taking both the New York and New Jersey Bar Exams. When Milin isn’t signing deals for his clients or studying law, he spends time playing and coaching basketball and is an active participant in New Jersey politics, where he has served as a candidate for Parsippany, New Jersey’s Township Council and is currentlyan advisor to Parsippany’s Mayor.

She is simply second-to-none,” he added.

C

This year, LIMA is proud to have her front and center, joining the ranks of other industry pioneers as the latest inductee into the Licensing Hall of Fame. Cheryl began her licensing career in 1972 with Hallmark, then moved to Coleco as Executive Director of Licensing working on Cabbage Patch Kids before forming her own agency in 1986. As one of the industry’s leading agents, she has helped to unite some of the industry’s largest manufacturers – including Added Extras,

As Co-Chair of the Charity Committee she coordinates all activity for the team of volunteers and personally brings in contributions from companies across the industry, investing hundreds of hours of professional and personal time pursuing a cure for children suffering from brain tumors. She has truly given the industry a cause to rally around, and leads the way with her passion for giving back. Cheryl’s dedication to children’s related cause-marketing tied into licensing began early in her career and continues strongly to this day.
