From The Editor
ON THE CARDS “If you build it, they will come” echoes the memorable quote from Field of Dreams, the 1989 film about a struggling Iowa corn farmer who hears voices, interprets them as a command to create a baseball ground in his fields and so he does, believing against all odds that it is the right thing to do. His unexpected efforts are rewarded as then, out of the corn appear legendary players (back from the dead), which swell his soul, reaffirms his raison d’etre and fortuitously leads to the farm finding a new source of income as people flock from miles around to visit the pitch. Like many of you no doubt, with cinemas closed, I have resorted to home cinema nights, hence my nostalgic viewing. But writing this today (October 8), the very date when The Henries 2020 actual awards event was due to happen, that movie seems ever more apposite. Confronted with the restrictions of the ongoing pandemic, we had to accept that many aspects of The Henries (like so much else at the moment) would have to change. Instead of our offices being filled with parcels of entries, containing greeting cards and giftwrappings that would ordinarily then be mounted on boards in readiness for a hectic judging day. This would involve a big group of leading card retailers each considering all the entries by touching the cards and exchanging views before putting pen to paper on their judging forms. This year it has been somewhat different. It all effectively still happened, but everything took place online. And, having shunted the possible date of the awards event back in the diary as far as we could, and with no chance of a let up on social gatherings, we have now taken the plunge to move it to a virtual event, which will take place on the evening of Thursday 10 December. We are still ‘mid plough’ with ideas to ensure that the virtual Henries will bring everyone together - it will be free to attend, so money is no object. And neither is distance, meaning that overseas distributors, retailers and publishers from all over the world can be a part of it. This is going to one fabulous virtual Christmas party for the whole industry. It has been wonderful how the greeting card community has really pulled together to ensure The Henries 2020 will happen.

Publishers entered in their droves, retailers gave up hours and hours to judge the 9,000 cards entered and sponsors have pledged their continued support. Enjoy looking at all the finalists (pages 33-72) and make sure you get your California Dreamin’ (the theme for the event) glad rags, ready for December 10. The Henries will operate on ‘Hopin’ a top digital platform that’s easy to navigate, even in high heels! You will have a chance to get a taster of ‘Hopin’ as the GCA is also holding its AGM and Conference using the same technology at its morning/early afternoon event on November 4 (another date for your diary). But back to very real things…we are now in the Golden Quarter, including the all important run up to Christmas. Many retailers, having brought forward their Christmas card displays are seeing good results, with early Christmas card buying underway (see Viewpoints pages 27-29) and a general feeling that people, unable to socialise, will be looking to retain those important human connections through cards. Let’s hope so anyway. And talking of human connections, I would to pay a personal tribute to my friend David Hicks, founder of Really Good and Soul, who, as planned, closed down both businesses so he can now concentrate on his many other interests. David, through your personal contribution and your companies’ products you have added real colour and depth to so many people’s lives. I am just sad we won’t be seeing you making your distinctive moves on The Henries’ dancefloor dressed in whatever outfit you would have conjured up to fit in with the California Dreamin’ theme this year! Popcorn’s calling… it’s Shawshank Redemption night!

Emotional Rescue’s Distribution Change For Independents Nigel Quiney/Paper Rose sales team to carry Emo to indies From Tuesday 1 December, Emotional Rescue ranges are to be distributed to indies by the recently combined Nigel Quiney/Paper Rose independent sales team. For the last three years, Emo’s products have been distributed by Carte Blanche Greetings into the independent channel. Explaining the new arrangement with Paper Design Group (which encompasses Nigel Quiney Publications, Paper Rose, Simon Elvin, Glick, Grassroots and Polytint), Brett Smith, joint managing director of Emotional Rescue told PG: “Both myself and David [Greaves, joint md of Emotional Rescue] have known Ian Jackson, owner of Paper Design Group for 20 years and have always had a plan that we would work closely together. And now’s the time.” However, Brett assured that the split with Carte Blanche Greetings is very “amicable” with all three companies working together to ensure a smooth handover. “We are very thankful to Carte Blanche for their support over the last three years. I have the utmost respect for Alister Marchant [ceo of CBG] and the honorable way he is managing this, including furnishing his sales team with the
names of their counterparts at Nigel Quiney/Paper Rose for their retail customers in order that continuity is assured during the transitional period,” said Brett. The addition of 220+ designs, selected from several of Emotional Rescue’s ranges (On The Ceiling, Virtual Safari, Face Ache, among others) will significantly broaden the product portfolio carried by the Nigel Quiney/Paper Rose independent sales team. As Alison Butterworth, managing director of Nigel Quiney Publications highlighted: “We are delighted to be able to offer Emotional Rescue designs to our independent customers, giving them access to the strongest brand in the humorous card sector. Creating humorous cards is a speciality and the Emotional Rescue team are masters at it. Their ranges perfectly compliment Nigel Quiney’s strength on the traditional front and Paper Rose’s contemporary prowess, meaning that collectively we can offer a potent mix to independent customers.” Above: Some 200+ Emotional Rescue card designs are to be sold and marketed by the Nigel Quiney/Paper Rose independent sales team. Michael Laybourn joins the Penmark team A combination of ‘who you know’ and ‘what you know’ resulted in Michael Laybourn, the long-time buyer of the Hoopers department store group, joining the Penmark retail team as a project-based consultant. Michael is supporting Mark Rees, managing director of the Midlands-based retail group (which trades from 10 shops), working on a consultancy basis, initially on ‘Project Christmas’. “What a strange year 2020 has turned out to be,” exclaimed Michael, who after almost 30 years of working at Hoopers (department stores in Harrogate, Torquay, Tunbridge Wells and Wilmslow) was made redundant during lockdown. However, thanks to an introduction made by Becky Dobson, director of Glick, Michael is delighted to be back in the industry again, having now set up his own retail consultancy. “With the lack of any trade shows and our drive to curate a more independent focus on our gift selection, being able to draw on Michael’s knowledge for our ‘Project Christmas’ on a consultancy basis seemed ideal,” said Mark Rees. For Michael, whose wide buying experience spans cards, stationery, gifts, homewares, furniture, bath and beauty, the opportunity to work alongside Mark and his team means his passion for products and retailing is not being wasted. “I’m so glad to still be working in an industry that is constantly changing and evolving,” said Michael. Above: Michael Laybourn at the Spring Fair in February.
Card Factory’s “encouraging performance” Card Factory sent out positive messages about how its trade has been ‘better than expected’ since it has reopened stores after lockdown, while its online sales have soared. Its partnership arrangements with Aldi and The Reject Shop (in Australia) have also contributed “better than expected” revenues. Like most retailers, the effects of Covid-19 have impacted on the value retailer’s fortunes. Its interim results, (covering the six months to July 31), saw the retail group report a £22.2 million statutory pre-tax loss, compared to a £24.3 million profit the previous year. Commenting, Paul Moody, executive chairman of Card Factory, who is also caretaking the ceo role until a replacement for Karen Hubbard is appointed said: "We are pleased with both the trading performance as our stores have reopened and the positive feedback from customers who are visiting less frequently, but spending more. Recognising the uncertainty of the impact of further Covid-19 measures and changes in consumer behaviour in the short term, we are focused on a flawless execution of Christmas and the implementation of our refreshed strategy." While its store takings were down (by 4.4%), its online sales (albeit from a low base) were up by 64.4%. Although much of the latter increase was due to the period of store closures, the retail group also reported a “positive response” from consumers since the relaunch of its website on July 2. Above: Some of Card Factory’s stores remained closed until July 24, well over a month after they could reopen. Right: Online sales have increased massively for Card Factory, with the retailer relaunching its website on July 2.

Hurrah For The Henries Finalists Winners to be revealed at a big industry virtual Christmas party The finalists of The Henries 2020 greeting card awards have been revealed, with all things now ‘go’ for a California Dreamin’-themed digital awards event that will take place on Thursday 10 December, set to be the industry’s biggest virtual Christmas party ever! Dazzling proof of UK greeting card publishers’ abundant creativity was there in all its glory in the 1,800+ ranges that were submitted by publishers of all shapes and sizes into this year’s Henries greeting card product awards. Each and every one of these were put under the scrutiny of the largest ever Henries’ Judging Panel, made up of over 60 top retailers, to arrive at the worthy contenders for these prestigious industry awards (see all finalists on pages 33-72), the finalists hailing from a vast array of publishers, from leading brands to newbies. The winners of all the product award categories, the Best Service to the Independent Retailer and Honorary Achievement Award, will all be unveiled at The Henries 2020 on the evening of Thursday 10 December, taking place digitally. “While we, and so many from the greeting card community, had hoped with all our hearts to be able to meet and celebrate the industry’s achievements in person at The Henries, the ongoing coronavirus situation means this is not to be,” commented Warren Lomax, joint md of Max Publishing, which owns and organises The Henries.
Above: The branding for this year’s Henries logo is a nod to the California Dreamin’ theme. Left: While there won’t be any hugging at The Henries this year, the jubilant feeling will reign supreme.
“If anything, the inherent challenges of the ongoing pandemic situation has further elevated the role greeting cards play in showing we care for one another and as such it is imperative that we honour greeting card publishing excellence - and this virtual extravaganza will be fun too with lots of opportunities for networking and catching up with industry mates!” added Warren. The free-to-attend Henries event will bring together hundreds and hundreds of publishers, retailers, trade suppliers, agents and overseas distributors. Using the ‘Hopin’ digital platform, The Henries awards event will accommodate a main stage area (where the awards ceremony will be hosted) as well as a series of Session Rooms. These Rooms will enable people to ‘meet’ for live video chats and drinks with colleagues and friends, prior to and after the ceremony. All sponsors of The Henries will have their own Session Rooms, but others are invited to book one (or more) too! Each Session Room (which cost £375) holds 10-15 people at one time, but people can pop in and out. Session Rooms can be booked via www.Max-Tickets.net or from Clare Hollick of Createvents, on clare@createvents.co.uk or 01183 340085.
The finalist line-up of The Henries is a wonderful demonstration of the industry’s creative prowess right across the board, from established companies to newbie brands. PG shares some of the happy vibes… l “Just when we thought 2020 represented everything that was lousy…we received the fabulous news that Five Dollar Shake has been nominated for a Henries or two! We’re absolutely over the moon. Finally, some good news this year!! Cue lots of whooping!!! Thank you to all the judges and everyone at Max for having the awesomenous to keep the awards going for everyone this year!” - Matt and Beth Genower, co-owners of Five Dollar Shake
l “This is amazing news. I’m now a mum of three young boys, only giving birth to my youngest at the end of 2019. So, finding time to design these ranges has been a challenge. Working until 3am has now become my ‘new normal’ and I’m proud to call myself a ‘mumtrepreneur’. Being nominated for two awards just shows that all my hard work and commitment has paid off. Best wishes and sunshine smiles.” - Adriana Lovesy, founder of Mrs Lovesy Above: Adriana Lovesy, founder of Mrs Lovesy with her sons (left to right) Sebastien (3 years), Xavier (11 months) and Lucien (5 years).
l “CONGRATS to our fellow finalists in this year’s awards for customer service, during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC to boot!! Well done guys you’re superstars and it’s an absolute pleasure to know you all - thank you lovely customers who nominated us as well, always sooo lovely to have good news! X” Wendy Jones-Blackett, co-owner of Wendy Jones-Blackett Above: Wendy Jones-Blackett with new puppy Flora.
Judges’ Views Some 60 retail buyers from right across the retail spectrum - multiples to indies, grocers to dept. stores - spent hours and hours scrutinising the entries to The Henries…but all agreed it was time well spent. Here is just a taster… l Sarah Moughtin, and Chloe Cartwright, buyer and buying assistant of John Lewis and Waitrose: “We have contacted a few of the publishers whose entries caught our eye - we saw some really lovely designs! It was good to see the Black Lives Matter movement being incorporated into some designs, with some publishers using both black and white characters. We thought that was great, as it's something we are missing in the card market currently.” l Yasmin Twist, card buyer of the Gee Tees group: “I loved the judging; it was a true privilege. There is so much wonderful product, created by the talent here in the UK. I could not miss any or skip over any entry as clearly so much love, passion, integrity and wonderful creativity abounds in all categories. We are so blessed with the artistic design that surrounds us in our industry.” l Jon May, co-owner of Mooch Gifts & Home, Bewdley and Stourport-on-Severn: ”Wow, that's a lot of cards! I now have a handful of new suppliers ready to contact, so well worth doing - especially with the lack of trade shows!” (See more about the judging on pages 30-31) Above: Chloe Cartwright was delighted to be part of The Henries 2020 judging panel. Holy Mackerel Has Acquired The Alternative Image Company New home for the vintage photographic card collection Holy Mackerel has acquired The Alternative Image Company, thereby significantly expanding its portfolio with the addition of 300+ quirky retro black and white photographic designs, which complement the publisher’s existing eclectic mix. "I am so happy that Sarah, Katie and Wyn [owners of Holy Mackerel] are going to be taking the range on,” stated Ilona Benjamin, who founded The Alternative Image Company back in 2007. “We've been great friends since we first met at Summer Fair many years ago and it will be great to see the cards carrying on. As Holy Mackerel has been doing the warehousing and order fulfilment for me
for several years, I know that Alternative Image's customers will continue to get great customer service. At the risk of launching into an Oscar's speech I would really love to thank all of my customers, agents and distributors, for their loyalty and support over the years, I have enjoyed meeting and working with you all and wish you all the very best for the future". The acquisition has come about as a result of The Alternative Image Company’s owner Ilona Benjamin, who founded the card company in 2007, deciding to step away from the greeting card industry. “I‘ve volunteered for many years for the
National Domestic Abuse Helpline, and I am now moving into women’s sector full time, which I am very much looking forward to,” Ilona told PG. She could not have hoped for a better home for her card publishing business as the Holy Mackerel team have always loved the Alternative Image range. As Katie highlighted: “Ilona has such a good eye for an image, and the range we're inheriting is full of absolute gems. We're going to carry on keeping it refreshed and updated, and hope that it will long continue to be a much-loved range. We're really sad to be losing Ilona from our lovely industry, but we will be dragging her along for a guest appearance at trade shows - we're sure all it will take is a promise of a glass of wine or two!" The whole range of The Alternative Image Company’s designs will continue to be available and can already be found on the Holy Mackerel website. This is the second bit of good news from Holy Mackerel of late, as the company’s One Lump or Two range is in the finals of The Henries in the Henry Cole Classic Award category. Top: There are some real comedy gems in The Alternative Image Company’s collection. Above left: The quirky feel of The Alternative Image Company’s vintage images are a great complement to Holy Mackerel's eclectic portfolio.
Change of ‘lyrics’ for Say It With Songs Within a few hours of having debuted with her brand new music-based greeting card concept, More than Words, company founder, Ellie Fitzgerald hot-footed it back to the mixing desk to come up with a follow up ‘rendition’ due to a trademark clash with Ling Design. The company, which combines song lyrics on a greeting card with streamable music, has now been relaunched under the new brand of Say it with Songs. While Ellie ensured she had all the necessary legal agreements in place with those in the music business to allow her to launch the new greeting card concept, it wasn’t until she was contacted by David Byk, ceo of the Ling Group that she was alerted to the fact that More Than Words is a long standing trademark of its Talking Pictures collection.
“David was really supportive and lovely about the whole thing, but we concluded that the business, brand and customers would benefit from a prompt switch to a more unique and memorable name,” says Ellie. David told PG that he fully accepts it was “an honest mistake” by Ellie and is thankful that it came to light “very early in her journey, before she had printed many cards. While, I am very keen to help facilitate new publishers coming onto the market, I also need to ensure we protect our brands, especially those like More Than Words that are sold all over the worlds.” Above: Say it with Songs is the new name for the song lyric/music streaming greeting card concept.
Oliver Preston’s Cartoon Museum campaign Some may know him as the co-owner of greeting card company Beverston Press, others may know him for his cartoons which have been published in respected periodicals, but for the last six months, Oliver Preston, as chairman of the Cartoon Museum, has been leading the charge to amass enough funds to re-open this important museum and cover its running costs until the end of next year at least. After months of campaigning, making grant applications, appealing for donations, this important museum, which includes several well-known greeting card artists’ work, has just re-opened after being closed since March, having raised over £300,000 through donations and grants. As Oliver highlights, cartoon art has been a mainstay of the greeting card industry, citing British cartoonists Matt, Quentin Blake, Johnny Pugh, Tony Husband, Searle, Thelwell, Simon Drew and Bestie as among those whose work is represented in the Cartoon Museum collection and on display in its galleries. Cath Tate of Cath Tate Cards has also been involved in the museum, notably with the Inking Women exhibition a few years ago, which celebrated the very best women cartoonists in the UK. Above: The Cartoon Museum has recently re-opened after an intense fundraising effort.

A Thinking of You Week Bonanza Activity ramped up for TOYW like never before The Thinking of You Week campaign (which took place September 2127) really came to life this year. The card sending initiative, instigated by the GCA, was not only widely embraced by all manner of retailers and publishers, but activities rippled out to consumers too. Sainsbury’s, Cardzone, Card Factory, Clintons, Asda, Paperchase, Moonpig and Thortful were among the major retailers and online operators who got behind Thinking of You Week this year, with indies too getting in on the action. Sainsbury’s enjoyed a long run up to TOYW, having installed dedicated displays into 200 of its top stores from mid August. Commenting, Carly Pearson, senior buyer for Sainsbury’s confirmed that “sales have been strong” in what is the first year of supporting the event.
Card Factory developed specific PoS items that featured in all of its 1,000 stores while Clintons initiated a ‘4 for 3’ on all general cards in its stores during TOYW. Among the independent retailers who have got behind the campaign this year was Michael Apter, owner of the two Paper Tiger card and stationery stores in

Edinburgh who prominently displayed a Thinking of You Week poster in its windows as well as branded PoS instore. As Michael told PG: “The current climate has definitely seen people buy and send more cards, recognising the importance of ‘keeping it real’ and expressing how much they miss seeing friends and family. Thinking of You Week fits in perfectly with this sentiment and need.” The Art File, Belly Button, UKG, Hallmark, Carte Blanche, Paper Salad, Cherry Orchard, Rachel Ellen, Corniche and Out of the Blue Studios are among those to have really got involved on the publisher side including with retailer promotions and philanthropic gestures. On top of this, social media channels were abuzz while Royal Mail also highlighted the initiative, sharing the quirky mini film, ‘How to say Thinking of You’ commissioned by the GCA and made by the talented Lanther Black duo (Dominique Miranda and Jack Parker). As Amanda Fergusson, ceo of the GCA summed up: “The widespread support from major retailers, as well as many indies, gave the Thinking of You Week branding great visibility. The surge in traffic to our Thinking of You Week website is another indicator of the growing awareness and interest in the campaign.”
The Art File’s caring and sharing Nottingham card publisher, The Art File got behind Thinking of You Week by donating free cards to care homes, hospital wards, schools and charities - and also offered to collect and post the cards once they were written! The Art File delivered boxes of its greeting cards to local care home Leawood Manor, Nottingham’s Children’s Hospital (QMC) and local charity Base51 (which provides counselling support to 12-25 year olds) to inspire, encourage and facilitate positive connections to be made through the sending of cards. “The power of the written word combined with our desire to connect with friends and loved ones means that greeting cards are now more important than ever,” says managing director Ged Mace. Above: The Art File’s co-founder Karen Mace and James Mace, sales and marketing manager with some of the free stamps and Thinking of You Week flyer that explains about the initiative.
Over the rainbow As part of its backing for Thinking of You Week, Cherry Orchard Publishing not only launched a special range of cards, but also ran a window display competition for its retail customers with a prize of £250 worth of M&S vouchers. The winner was Expressions of Broadstairs. Retailer Faye Jordan, told PG: “the shop windows are always so important to us and Thinking of You Week has had a special meaning this year as we all try and support each other in these difficult times.” While Faye acknowledges that creating arresting window displays takes a lot of time and planning, she believes “a good window display will always encourage more people into your shop so it’s always worth it.” Above: Expressions in Broadstairs’ winning display.
Broad thinking from Belly Button Designs Belly Button Designs thought about its retail customers, agents as well as the sick and needy during Thinking of You Week. The publisher donated ‘Thinking of you’ cards to its local hospital: Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital & Wythenshaw Hospital. Moonpig’s Massive Publisher Onboarding Bonanza Gets underway Speculation about online operator’s stock market flotation At a time when rumours are circulated about Moonpig’s plans to float on the London stock exchange, the online greeting card operator has just launched the largest ever publisher on-boarding programme in the company’s 20-year history - and sees it cast its net into non-personalised designs. The company has issued a call for established publishers, as well as any creative talent who are passionate about greeting cards and eager to develop different ranges for sale on the Moonpig website. In what is the first phase of this on-boarding, Moonpig is looking to triple the number of publishers (both established brands and newbies) and designers it works with, focussing on design-led, humour and topical ranges to extend its existing 12,000+ portfolio. The plan is to create a constant flow of new designs. “The creative industry has been hit hard by the pandemic this year and we

wanted to support young, talented people by offering them the opportunity to get their designs to market in a quick and effective way,” said Sarah-Jane Porter, head of cards at Moonpig. “This is a brilliant chance for them to get their designs in front of millions of people and build a successful brand for themselves.” Moonpig is not only aiming to bolster its extensive card offering with nonpersonalised and relevant (topical and trending) cards, but to also use this opportunity to make its range even more representative of our diverse society. Break out the Tunnocks! Cinnamon Aitch is marking its 25th Anniversary. As one of the longest standing successful ‘double acts’ in the industry, the company co-founders Sara Burford and Sarah Fitzpatrick, sadly have had to tone down their actual celebrations, but are more than happy to mark the milestone. “Birmingham [where Cinnamon Aitch is based] is currently in lockdown so our celebrations have to be strictly virtual - Prosecco in PJ’s while eating Tunnocks Teacakes I think should do it, and limited photo opportunities!” said Sara. “We are very grateful for our 25 years, they have mainly been filled with laughter and although it doesn’t always feel like it, we must be doing something right! ” If Sara and Sarah had listened to the opinions of others two and a half decades ago, the industry would have missed out on this wonderful creative duo pooling their talents and forming Cinnamon Aitch. “’Don’t do it’ they said. ‘Most partnerships fail within a year…and most businesses fail in two’. They said. In our case they were wrong, thankfully,” says Sarah. “We do finish each other’s sentences and have a shared passion for design but it’s probably the shared vision, focus and determination that has seen us through the ups and downs of the 25 years,” she added. Having both studied Textile Design at The Nottingham Trent University, they dabbled with lecturing, producing a range of scarves and wraps and navigating the couture fashion industry. “Our love of stitch and design soon found its way into the wonderful world of greeting cards,” explains Sara and Sarah. “We are lucky enough to work in a fantastic industry and still have customers today that have been with us from the start,” they added. As beacons of UK retail, when John Lewis announced recently that it made a £635 million loss in the first six months to July, and that none of its staff (partners) would be receiving their traditional annual bonus, for the first time since the Second World War, there were some sharp intakes of breath. However, £470million of the loss figure was an exceptional ‘one off’ write down in the value of its stores, meaning that in the first six months of this year, John Lewis and Waitrose made a loss of £55m. This is about the same as this time last year. Revealing the overall performance chairman, Sharon White said that “Sales momentum is starting to build in reopened stores, with sales down around 30% on last year, ahead of expectations. Stores in retail parks are down by around 15% and are doing better than city centres, especially London which is down around 40%.” Encouragingly, greeting card sales have been and are outperforming other product sectors for John Lewis & Partners. “We feel very optimistic about greeting cards,” said Sarah Moughtin, assistant buyer responsible for greeting cards. “John Lewis branch performance is increasing week on week and we are not too far adrift from last year’s sales which is incredible!” Highlighting particular areas of top performance, Sarah stated “Kids, age and contemporary are strong categories for us and it is also good to see New Home cards coming through strongly.” And the greeting card picture is even better at Waitrose. Sarah confirmed that greeting card performance “continues to stand out with double digit growth each week, surpassing our expectations. Woodmansterne has done a brilliant job of installing and we are now full steam into trading together for what looks to be an exciting Autumn/Winter season.” Above: John Lewis and Waitrose partners will be forgoing their annual bonus this year. NEWS IN BRIEF
‘A Greeting Card TV Show’ GCA’s digital AGM and Conference set for November 4 “What we are aiming for is to create a great greeting card TV show!” summed up Amanda Fergusson, ceo of the GCA about the plans to make the association’s AGM and Conference, to be held on November 4, the most inclusive event. Industry insights, retailer revelations, views and news will make for a packed agenda for the online morning/early afternoon event. “The greeting card industry is a tight knit community that enjoys and thrives on interaction. While we may all be currently separated physically, by using a top digital platform, we will importantly be able to
bring everyone together for our annual AGM and Conference,” stated Amanda. A jam-packed agenda will also see the unveiling of the findings from the soon to be published UK Greeting Card Market Report which tracks how the industry fared over 2019 compared to the previous year. There will be plenty of retailing insights. While one panel discussion involving retailers will see views exchanged as to the current state of trade, their hunches for Christmas as well as opportunities and threats for the industry, another will be totally focused on how online has and is playing a greater role in the sector. Another significant discussion will be on the subject of diversity and inclusivity in the greeting card industry, with publishers and retailers exchanging views on progress thus far, while highlighting some of the barriers and suggesting ways of achieving greater inclusivity in the card community. The GCA trade supplier members will also play a starring role, many at the ready to share developments on the environmental front.

Frankfurt’s 2021 Paperworld rescheduled to April As a result of Covid-19 and the associated travel restrictions, Paperworld 2021, will not take place January 30-2 February in Frankfurt’s Messe as planned. Instead, the show will form part of a oneoff joint event with Christmasworld and Ambiente which will take place April 1720 in Frankfurt. This physical event, dubbed the International Consumer Goods Show - Special Edition, will be supplemented with an online programme of Consumer Goods Digital Days. That Festive Friday Feeling With many retailers having brought forward their Christmas card displays with good results, it looks like early Christmas card buying is underway. Helping to kickstart and encourage early Christmas card sending, the livery has now been released for this year’s Festive Friday. This year, the GCA-instigated day for people to start writing their Christmas cards falls on Friday 27 November. Ling and GBCC deliver tasty incentives Ling Design’s recent launch of its new planning service comes with tasty incentives for retailers signing up - the promise of a Fortnum & Mason hamper. While GBCC (Ling’s sister company) has offered a planning service for years, it was only post lockdown that the decision was taken to extend the service to Ling customers. Retailers committing to a plan for Ling, GBCC or brokerage by the end of the year, the group will receive Fortnum & Mason hamper, with different hampers being offered dependent on the size of the planned display. Thinking
Of You My days continue to disappear in a flash. By the time I wade through emails and challenges for the various parts of my business it’s usually midnight before I switch off my laptop. I was really looking forward to sending my Thinking of You Week cards and I hope to still do it. They were a mix of local painted scenes and some from my favourite designers, but more importantly than the designs was what I was going to write. I had wanted to show my appreciation to an agent who supported my website being one of the first orders placed. I had wanted to reach out to my pal David Greaves (co-owner of Emotional Rescue) to speak about football and see how things were with him. I was going to send a hello to friends who have a son with real health issues, far more challenging than anything I will ever face. I had a big thank you design to give to a relative who has sent my mum a card or postcard every week since this all started. I wanted to tell someone that I believed in them and their new project even though I had perhaps been too honest with its prospects. I had so many words that I wanted to write. I wanted people to know that I had taken the time to pick a card and physically

Last week (I am writing this on 27 September) was Thinking of You Week and I have 20 cards sitting on my desk that have stared at me for the entire week. Each night and each day things happened and the cards just sat there. I had so much I wanted to write in those specially selected cards, especially at this time… over the three-month mark on from the business secretary, Alok Sharma (Yes, it is still him, but where he has been is another question) announcing that reopening would, “allow high streets up and down the country to spring back to life”. Ha ha! The reality is that none of this is normal and none of this is the same. Masks, restricted numbers, screens, social distancing, the way we are ordering our cards, no trade shows, the shadow of further lockdown looms and we are helpless to decisions being made by others. But...Christmas is coming! By the time you read this we will be in the Golden Quarter - the three months in which us card and gift Above: Just a few of the cards David selected to send to tell people he was thinking of them. write it in my ‘doctor’s scrawl, but it kept getting pushed back. Guess what though, you have to accept that things get in the way right now. It seems we are all trying to be superhuman. We are all trying to manage our business and our lives, dealing with things both workwise and personally under circumstances that none of us have ever faced before. I have seen it on Zoom calls, with people that look disengaged. I have seen it in staff that are bringing more of their personal challenges into work. I see it on the faces of those around me in the streets. We are now six months past that fateful March Monday where the majority of shops had to close their doors. We are now
retailers should really make traction saleswise. We all sit tight with fingers crossed, hoping much from this sales period as we all need it financially, but also for the reassurance that our businesses are still relevant. I believe that Christmas will happen and while different I do think there will be strong opportunities for us. Last week I realised that there were a number of my Christmas orders for cards
22-23.qxp_Grid 07/10/2020 20:12 Page 23
OVER THE COUNTER
that I had not placed. These were with some of our main companies that specialise in the more obscure titles. Thankfully, Cherry Orchard, IC&G, Jonny Javelin have all stepped up sorting my orders and delivering them immediately. Add this to our UKG, Hallmark, Tracks, Wishing Well, Second Nature, Carte Blanche orders, and we have a fantastic selection of family cards. This has been a huge positive. For the first time ever we put out our Christmas cards in early September and saw them selling immediately. We have also seen gifts being bought and money wallets too. People are planning.
I think we will see sales of family-titled cards increase. I think that people will look for that special message and special card this year as they will cling to that ‘piece of paper’ more than ever. As humans we want to know people care. We want to feel secure. We want to say ‘we love you’ and ‘we miss you.’ This virus has stripped a lot of the noise from our lives and has let us see that we are all affected in the same way and we all need that little reassurance. Cards are of course the best way to do that and I will definitely send more than I usually do this Christmas. In fact, you may get both a Christmas card and a ‘thinking of you’ one at the same time! In the last few weeks I have lost count of the discussions I have had with people who are struggling. Whether financially, whether because they are separated from loved ones or whether they just feel a bit lost. I described it as feeling “flat and fat”! Not saying receiving a card will change all that, but it will help.
Above: David’s Bijou store in Elgin is all geared up for the Golden Quarter. Below left: We all need a good Christmas! Below right: We have to accept that unlike those in Finland who are prepared for their long winters, none of us were ready for this pandemic.
So how do we manage our mental health as we come out or possibly go back into lockdown? Well, the first step is in accepting what is happening. I have a little list of things personal reminders that help me that I would like to share with you… Accept all points of view: Everyone has different fears and anxiety and there is no right or wrong. You have to accept that different people will worry and act differently. You can only control you, not everyone else. Make the hard decisions: You have to recognise there will be no further grants or the furlough scheme to support our businesses. We have to realise that we are going to be more on our own and the new schemes will have to be carefully considered. I know personally I am looking at trying to support all hours from November and if jobs are not going to be there, decisions need to be made about those roles. Be selective: Try to avoid speculation - get good quality information from sources that you enjoy and rely on. I have found myself reading ‘the story’ from a few different sources and that has given me the nuance of the decisions. Live in the now: Focus on the present and the practical. Things that you can actually do and affect. Worrying about things that have not happened and you have no control over serves no purpose. Bring things that are certain into focus and concentrate fully on them. Speak regularly: Talk to people you trust. This is without doubt the most important thing to do both in life or business. I have a very close nucleus of friends and family and I bounce things off
them all the time. I also still go to counselling and I find that it forces me to look at what and how I do things. That old BT ad was so right, it’s “good to talk”! You time: Making social life important is key. I am forever getting lost down the rabbit hole of work, but am desperately trying to get myself back into my training routine, walking and meeting people as and when I can. Always go back to the basics: Eat right, get lots of daylight, be as active as you can and sleep well. To be totally honest, I am not following all of the aforementioned advice myself, but I am trying. I am taking steps to be better and to do more, but it is not easy. You fall down you get back up simple as that. I don’t know about you, but even the change in temperature and daylight is affecting my mood. I listened to an interesting discussion on Radio 5 recently about how Scandinavian countries deal with the cold and the lack of light and warmth. On the programme a Finnish journalist said the reason they can live, walk and enjoy their winters is because they are acclimatised to it, are prepared for it and embrace it. And that’s the nub. None of us are used to living or running a business in this environment so, of course it is going to be difficult. Hopefully if there is ever another pandemic we will be better prepared. Wait did I just write that?!
He also ended by saying that many of the Finnish population live by the saying: “Do it today as tomorrow it may be forbidden.” Somehow or another I feel that that is very appropriate to us too. At this point we have no idea what is going to happen, so get it done and live in the now. And let’s all hope for a great run up to Christmas! l For anyone really struggling David suggests reaching out to some of these organisations: Mind (www.mind.org.uk), Samaritans (www.samaritans.org), SAMH (www.samh.org.uk) To contact David email: jppozzi@btconnect.com PROGRESSIVE GREETINGS WORLDWIDE

The Class Of
2020
That fact that 2020 has been incredibly difficult for many in the greeting card industry is patently obvious. The majority, reflected Cardsharp, from publishers to retailers, from trade suppliers to agents have been adversely affected in some way. Hopefully, the greeting card will prove robust enough to bounce back strongly in 2021. But looking into his crystal ball, Cardsharp thinks this year’s events (or lack of them!) has left a black hole at the centre of our creative industry that will take some time to fill.
Cardsharp’s mind wandered back in time to the 1970s and early 1980s. Then a small cabal of major publishers (more manufacturers than publishers in reality) constituted the Greeting Card and Calendar Association. This GCCA was a bit different from the inclusive Greeting Card Association we are fortunate to have today. Without taking away the achievements of the former incarnation of the trade
association, Cardsharp has heard stories that the GCCA then, was seen as something of a price fixing cartel. Over long agreeable lunches, finished off with brandies and cigars, in oak-panelled private lunchrooms, the then exclusively male council members would apparently decide between themselves, what prices they were going to charge retailers for the coming year. It was however a time when established publishers definitely had the upper hand.

PROGRESSIVE GREETINGS WORLDWIDE
New start-up publishers were largely dismissed as ‘kitchen table operators’ whose presence was not required at the top table. All this changed though in the mid 1980s, with a surge led by a brilliant young entrepreneur, Andrew Brownsword and an equally talented young artist, Deborah Jones. They collectively came up with ranges of new contemporary cute and humorous greeting cards, the most famous of which were the Dino and Forever Friends brands. Andrew had no truck with any organisation that would have him as a member, and his stratospheric success, based on creative brilliance broke the old jelly mould, paving the way for the huge successes of further creative entrepreneurs, like Stephen Haines of Carte Blanche and many more. After that, the floodgates opened in a positive way. It was a period of ‘creative destruction’, as older staid companies disappeared or were absorbed by newer more successful players. It heralded a time of ‘creative construction’. In tandem with the spawning of retail stockists, the greeting card industry became the fast-moving design-led creative sector that it is today. Or hopefully still is? And this has kept the British public engaged in greeting cards to an extent unequalled around the globe. However, Cardsharp is concerned that the trials and tribulations of 2020 might have had a more damaging effect
Below: There have been plenty of empty classrooms this year, due to Covid-19, including in the greeting card industry ‘schoolroom’.
on our industry than is readily apparent right now. Elsewhere in Progressive Greetings, you can see all the fantastic ranges that have made the finals of this year’s Henries in all their glory. Cardsharp was gratified, but not necessarily surprised, that a quarter of these feted ranges hailed from publishers now recognised as being at the forefront of the industry, through a journey involving three crucial steps. These are namely: contacting the GCA; attending one or maybe two Ladder Club seminars, and then taking their first trade show steps by exhibiting at Progressive Greetings Live. Perhaps a simplistic view, but it seems to have helped the emergence of so many brilliant publishers over the last decade or so. The raison d’etre of The Ladder Club (co-founded by the late great Lynn Tait and PG’s editor Jakki Brown), as its name suggests, was to impart business advice to Left: ‘New boy’ of the 80s/90s, Andrew Brownsword (far right) with Simon Elvin (left) and Jeff Bottomley (former of Kingsley Cards). assist talented designers, helping them to rise up ‘the greeting card industry ladder’ and avoid the common pitfalls. And, inextricably linked, the Springboard section of PG Live was specifically conceived to showcase new and emerging publishers, metaphorically holding their hand on their first public appearance. The examples of Ladder Clubbies/Springboarders are too many to list, but Cardsharp will identify just few. Wrendale Designs is perhaps the most famous example. Though now more than a greeting card company, it remains the roots of the business. Hannah Dale’s marvellously cute, but anatomically accurate animals now appear on everything from mugs to mats (home produced as well as through lucrative licensing agreements), but just before Above: One of the many Ladder Club graduates and seminar speakers and organisers. This meet-up included (pictured with the ladder) Scribbler’s co-founders John and Jennie Procter and (4th right) Jenny Cummins, md of McMillan Cards (who flew in from Sydney to share her insights). attending her first Ladder Club seminar, Hannah (a zoology graduate who then went into stockbroking) confided that she was not even sure whether to go ahead with a fullscale card publishing business. Wrendale has won countless Henries and the company is once again in the frame this year. And great to see Jessica Hogarth, a custodian of The Ladder Club Facebook group, to be in the running in the Christmas Counter Card range. Moreover, there must be very few good retailers who don’t stock at least one range from another Ladder Club attendee, Redback Cards, who has developed a real talent for creating top selling ranges of great variety. Multiple Henries winners in previous years, this year again the company is up for two. Then of course there is Paper Salad, founded by Karen Wilson and Claire Williams, who were among the first Ladder Club graduates to make the breakthrough after following lovely Lynn’s mantras to the letter. Paper Salad’s achievements are even more incredible in that the company started its journey in the pre-digital age when startup publishers had to borrow a small fortune
to finance a print run. After winning two Henries last year, the Paper Saladies are in the frame for no fewer than four awards this year, while their designs are also in the final in the Best Giftwrappings category too, as a result of their licensing tie-up with Glick. And Cardsharp’s mind is full of many more recent graduates of both The Ladder Club and PG Live Springboard that have gone on to achieve greater commercial and Henries success. Louise Mulgrew, Mrs Lovesy and Raspberry Blossom for instance are all represented in The Henries finals in two categories this year. While it is was gratifying to see recent start-ups like Emma Bryan (again Ladder Clubbies/PG Livers) appear in this year’s finalists list. Almost every year without fail, Cardsharp has observed, at least one start-up publisher, and normally many more, achieve the breakthrough. More importantly, not only do these breakthroughs keep the greeting card offering to the consumer fresh and exciting, it keeps the bigger boys on their toes, knowing that they have to invest in new product and designs continuously, in order to preserve their space in store and keep these interlopers at bay.
Which takes us back to where Cardsharp started - talking about 2020. This year quite understandably, it has not been an opportune time to start a new greeting card business. Even if you were brave enough to take the plunge, social distancing restrictions meant that there has been no Ladder Club to help you get to grips with the basics. And the same goes for Springboard at PG Live, and for other trade shows for that matter. With no exhibitions it is virtually impossible to find sales agents, distributors or get noticed by retailers. Consequently, it has been nigh on impossible for a start-up to get established in the greeting card market.
While the greeting card industry will get fully up and running again in 2021, and activities like The Ladder Club, PG Live and other trade shows will resume again, one thing is certain, reflected Cardsharp, there will be no ‘Class of 2020’. It is not just 16year olds and 18-year olds who have missed their ‘passing out’ parades, the greeting card industry ‘students’ have also missed out on their proms!

A Christmas Like No Other With us now being in the so-called ‘Golden Quarter’ for retailers, all fingers are crossed for strong, Christmas sales. It will be ‘a Christmas like no other’ as arrangements for large groups of people to be together are on hold, yet the craving for social interaction grows by the day, which should bode well for Christmas card sending. PG checks in with some leading card retailers asking them for their Christmas hunches, how they are approaching this year’s all-important festive season as well as their personal wish for Santa.
Hazel Walker senior buyer of Waterstones: Festive hunch: “We are being a bit more cautious this year but are still feeling positive, particularly on cards which have performed ahead of other areas throughout. We’re expecting customers to send more cards to their loved ones than perhaps in previous years as they are less likely to be getting together in person. For that reason we’re backing our boxed options more than singles and are planning for growth on our own brand range of charity cards. Since re-opening our shops we have seen a pattern of stronger sales in our more ‘local’ shops and are expecting a similar trend for Christmas.” Christmas stocking: “We’ve built on the success of changes we made last year and continued with boxed own brand cards rather than cello packs as these proved popular and also reduce the use of plastic - we’ve even removed the glue from the packaging of these and used a folded construction so they are now 100% plastic free! Our wrap range consists of ‘collections’ where the customer can buy into co-ordinating items and we’ve increased the number of Kraft options as again, this is more eco. About 20% of our single card selection bought for 2020 are cello-free. It’s slightly more of a challenge on seasonal cards because of how we manage our stock post-season and we have therefore kept some lines in cellos to minimise damage in storage. Following our introduction of more diverse greeting cards earlier in the year, we are also adding some Christmas cards from Afrotouch Designs to select shops and online. There has been

a really positive reaction to the everyday additions and sales have been encouraging, which demonstrates that these designs are something our customers are looking for. We added everyday cards to our website for the first time at the beginning of lockdown and have seen a strong uptake. As well as boxed Christmas cards which were available online last year, we’ll also be offering single Christmas cards via our website this season. Customers can now purchase their cards and wrap alongside any books or gifts, making the Waterstones website a one-stop shop catering to all their Christmas gifting needs!” Your Christmas wish: “Apart from a successful Christmas trade and good health for all…my personal Christmas wish would be for a more travel-filled 2021 something I am definitely missing!”
Deborah Tingay owner of Southbourne Cards, Southbourne: Festive hunch: “Our Christmas buy was completed four weeks after Christmas 2019 and on the back of great sales we bought big for this year! I think the current trend will continue in that people will send fewer cards, but will spend more on them overall. I am certainly seeing new customers and that’s encouraging for Christmas as well as everyday sales.” Christmas stocking: “Our move to unwrapped ‘naked cards’ actually meant we bought less individual counter card designs and went deeper into the buy. For example, we line bought Ling for the first time so we could have one design per pocket, moving from three units to between 6-12. We have upped our selection of plastic-free Christmas cards and have increased the selection of non-glitter designs. Nearly all of our cards are now delivered without plastic and we remove it where our suppliers are not quite there. We believe all cards look better naked. I wish I could say the same - I blame the lockdown diet! We have also increased our gift lines this year to make us a one-stop destination. Many customers don’t want to browse the shop at the moment, so offering simple solutions is paramount.” Going for promotion: “With the exception of late deliveries, our full Christmas selection was on sale in the first week of September and we have seen very high early sales. Lots of people have grumbled when they first see the Christmas cards, but then spend £20 on special people cards. One customer has already bought £120 worth of cards and advent calendars and she’s coming back for more! We are finding our window is increasingly important for driving new customers and sales. Our Christmas window display is going to showcase from 1 November and we are considering late night trading in December and even Sunday trading to try and recoup some of the lost sales from earlier in the year.” Your Christmas wish: “My personal Christmas wish is always the same, ‘Peace on earth and goodwill to all’ however this year I might ask for a few extras: a return to playing in my band, a return to singing in church, a return to big weddings and milestone birthday parties, aka an end to COVID!”
Lolly Blackman owner of Lorelei in Truro: Festive hunch: “What a very strange time we are in. We took the opportunity of lockdown to completely revamp our shop, but with staff shielding we were unable to open until mid-August. Customers have been very pleased to see us open again, but having to restrict it to only two people at a time in our very small shop means takings are down. I think Christmas cards for family and friends will always be best sellers, especially if they are unable to be together.” Christmas stocking: “I was wary about ordering for Christmas, waiting to see how the situation with the virus might improve, but then found I had left it too late with some companies who had already sold out of popular captions. Also, some companies with whom I had placed orders way back in January are being very slow with deliveries so I haven’t put all of my Christmas out yet. We started our display with what we have at the beginning of October. We have been selling lots of Emma Ball calendars and Wrendale calendars and diaries and Jellycat has saved the day often!! I haven’t consciously ordered unwrapped cards, but have been very impressed by the quality of the boxes and singles I have received as it does really show them off and customers will appreciate the lack of plastic. I have avoided heavy glitter, but have ordered some with subtle flitter as you have to have a bit of bling at Christmas!” Going for promotion: “We don’t sell online but may consider enabling customers to buy by appointment.” Your Christmas wish: “My personal wish for Christmas is for everyone to stay safe and be more considerate and kinder to each other - and for a vaccine in 2021 please.” Above: Lorelie has been completely revamped in time for Christmas. Left: Lolly Blackman (left) with her right-hand woman, Jane who has worked in the shop for 18 years.
Mark Rees managing director of the Midlands-based Penmark group:
Left: Mark Rees, md of Penmark. Below: While Mark thinks ‘shop local’ will continue, but says footfall in destination shopping centres is doing OK.
Festive hunch: “People are definitely shopping for Christmas early. They are getting more organised, living in fear of a widespread second lockdown. I hope the level of sales continues; the shops have been busy. It appears that everything has shifted forward a month so it may be that October and November will be the big sales months with December less of a surge. While there is something of a ‘shop local’ pattern, the destination shopping centres, such as Sheffield’s Meadowhall and Nottingham’s Victoria Centre are reporting footfall that is already back up to 6080% of last year, which is also encouraging.” Christmas stocking: “While we have some of the stock we ordered, I am concerned that some suppliers might not be able to meet demand. Our card selection this year reflects the trend of the last few years, of a move back to traditional festive looks and colours with sentiment also on the up.” Going for promotion: “We started putting out our Christmas displays at the beginning of September, but to make the most of the public’s early buying, we put out at least double the amount that we would normally. So, if a shop had 8’ of Christmas counter cards last year, this year we put out a 16’ or 24’ display. We are holding steady on pricing this year, avoiding early discounts. It seems that customers are coming in to buy, without needing the incentive of a deal.” Your Christmas wish: “My grandad always used to wish for one thing - good health - and that is my wish too this year, for everyone.” 28

VIEWPOINTS Graham Fraser owner of Alba in Oban: Festive hunch: “Christmas is a race against time! All in all, we are running slightly ahead of time this year compared to last, but our tourist season peaked much later this year and the so the two have clashed. I hope I am right in my belief that customers will want to send cards in greater numbers because it is doubtful that they will physically be seeing many friends and family. We have had practically zero foreign tourists this year, but lots of UK residents, especially campervanners and self-caterers. Where we are situated, 100 miles from the nearest big city, there have been (touch wood) relatively few cases of the virus, whereas Glasgow, our nearest city, is a hotspot, so hopefully our customers will think twice about the four hours driving and high risk city shopping and shop for Christmas closer to home. The internet, however looms large!” Christmas stocking: “On the Christmas card front we have stuck with our regular suppliers and been guided by the instant appeal of their design and price points rather than their ecological features.” Going for promotion: “We started ‘Christmas’ in August, putting out a display of cellopack Christmas cards for our tourist customers. In fact our Scottish calendar range had been on sale since Easter time and on 1 September all of the special interest calendars arrived. These completed our range of over 180 titles for our calendar wall. While Halloween takes over for a week it’s then back to Christmas for us, with a whole table display groaning under the weight of Christmas card boxes and cellopacks and a four metre display of relations and special title Christmas counter cards. Hot off the press are 1,000 of our unique Oban Christmas cards which we offer every year, each time featuring a bespoke painting of the area with the original work of art making a great focal point in one of our six windows. The last week of September we set up our Christmas island of tree decorations and they started to sell as soon as they hit the shelves! By the end of October our Christmas trees will have arrived and all our windows will be revamped for Christmas by then too. We need to have the shop looking wonderfully festive by 7 November, to coincide with the Oban Winter Festival. We have a Christmas card charity promotion running on a curated range of packet and boxed cards with 50p from each sale going to Mary’s Meals, a local charity. We are also running a permanent card promotion which offers customers savings on the more they buy as well as a calendar of promotions. We have also negotiated the use of six shop windows in another street in which we will create additional seasonal displays with ‘Available at Alba’ signage.” Your Christmas wish: “My personal Christmas wish is that this pandemic does not take an unexpected turn for the worse and make us close, leaving us with huge carryovers.” Top: Graham Fraser outside Alba presenting the cheque to Mary’s Meals for the sales of the special Christmas cards last year. Above right: Alba is being Advent-urous this year stretching the retailer’s range with Plasticine advents as well as those containing toiletries.
Olivia Reilly owner of Little Boat Gifts in Brightlingsea: Festive hunch: “I really feel that people will want to make Christmas as special as possible this year and if they can't be with their loved ones, we hope they will send a Christmas card to show how much they are missing them. Above: Little Boat Gifts went into We've seen lots of Christmas at the beginning of customers already buying September. Olivia Reilly feels that we cards to send to people that Below: could be on for strong Christmas card sends. they haven't been able to visit this year. A lot of our customers still feel safer shopping local and in the smaller shops, where numbers are more limited. I feel this will be with us right through to Christmas. They might purchase larger items online, but for those smaller, more personal gifts and decorations you can't beat actually seeing and buying them in person.” Christmas stocking: “We had already ordered quite a lot of our Christmas stock back in February, which is still arriving daily, but we have added quite a few extras, particularly more greeting cards. We’ve added more giftwrap, extended our gift selection, and now have a range of tableware pieces. As a shop we try and buy responsibly and where possible have reduced the amount of plastic instore, for example we have plastic-free Christmas crackers this year.” Going for promotion: “We started putting out Christmas stock at the beginning of September, which is much earlier than usual. The reaction has been great and lots of customers have already started shopping and planning, with some items selling out by the end of September. In past years we have offered free stamps to customers if they are purchasing Christmas cards to send and we hope to do the same this year. We normally have a Christmas evening with the shop full of our lovely regular customers, but instead this year we will offer several personal shopping slots that people can book and enjoy having the shop to themselves. During lockdown we delivered cards and small gifts to local customers and if people can't get out this Christmas season we will do the same, but we hope lots of our customers will still visit our store as part of their festive experience.” Your Christmas wish: “We know that Christmas isn't going to be how we normally have it, but I wish that we can all enjoy the festive season and show those close to us how much they truly mean to us.” PROGRESSIVE GREETINGS WORLDWIDE

The Henries Judging Process
From dreamin’ to reality The theme for this year’s Henries awards was set at the start of the year as California Dreamin’, aiming to capture some of the upbeat sunny vibes of the US West Coast in the 60s. Not letting a pandemic get in the way of recognising and rewarding the best in UK greeting card design, the entering and judging process was taken online, with the winners being announced on December 10 at what promises to be the biggest virtual industry Christmas party ever. PG explains The Henries process which sees dreams becoming a reality. Buyers from John Lewis, Scribbler, Fortnum & Mason, Waterstones, Paperchase, Card Factory, WHSmith, Cardzone, Sainsbury’s, Clintons, Moonpig, RHS and Oliver Bonas, as well as a host of leading small groups (including Between the Lines, House of Cards, Postmark, Gee Tees, Mooch, Zo & Co, 3 Wishes, Baileys and Utility) and an incredible array of independents, scrutinised over 9,000 greeting card and giftwrappings which were submitted into The Henries 2020 to arrive at the worthy finalists that are featured in all their glory in the following pages. While the ongoing effects and restrictions of the coronavirus resulted in a change to The Henries’ entering and judging process this year, with both aspects taking place entirely online, this did not detract in any way from the quality and quantity of the entries, the thoroughness of the judges and the integrity of the judging process. The entire responsibility of judging the product entries and the Most Promising Young Designer or Artist award lay in the collective hands of the judging panel, that was made up entirely of retailers. Over the course of three weeks, they individually scrutinised the thousands of entries.
30
PROGRESSIVE GREETINGS WORLDWIDE
The criteria for judging were: l Quality of Design l Quality of print, production and
manufacture l Appropriateness for the market
sector at which it is aimed l Value for money
Each judge voted for what they considered were the top six entries in each category. Six points were then assigned to all the top choices down to one point for the sixth choice. The points from all the judges were correlated to arrive at the winner and the other finalists in each category.
The independent judges 2020 Joining all the multiple buyers on The Henries’ judging panel were a huge bunch of independent retailers who spent many hours logged into the website, going through the thousands of entries. This knowledgeable bunch included Michelle Ellingham (Box of Delights); Andrea Pinder (Presentation); Anita Thorpe (Diverse); Anne Barber (In Heaven at Home); Sally Matson (Red Card); Brent Milburn (New Frames); Debbie and Jerry Brown (First Class Greetings); Denise Laird (Spirito); Fiona Trees (Memorable Moments); Georgina Black (Pretty Shiny Shop); Jane and Will Apps (Paper Turtle); Jo Georgiou (The Ark); Jo Sorrell (Cardies); Sarah Barrington (Blue Dog); Victoria Robinson (Wishes of Cockermouth); Martin and Joyce Fitch (The Card Hall); Liz Killick (Calladoodles); Maggie Wynn (Just Cards); Nigel Hamilton-Evans (Boroughbridge Post Office); Tim Gould (Objectables); Sonya HaandrikmanSibald (Celebrations); Sarah Laker (Marple Stationery Supplies); Fiona Fabien (Papyrus); Sarah Green (Wave and High Tide); Sarah Crees (Garsons); Nik Gornall (Romantica) and Rachael Barnes (Dragonfly Cards and Gifts). Above: Jo Georgiou, owner of The Ark, Stoke Newington in judging mode. Left: Penny Bailey, co-owner of Baileys with her dog Amber, who lay next to her feet for most of the weekend while she went through all the categories.

The Henries Judging Process
Sitting in judgement Here are some snippets from just a few of the wonderful retailers who formed this year’s judging panel… Penny Bailey, co-owner of Baileys (Ainsdale, Crosby and Maghull): “Being a Henries’ judge felt like such a responsibility, but I enjoyed it. There are so many talented artists out there. I've picked up a couple of publishers who I ordered from for the first time, which is a great added bonus.”
Victoria Robinson, director of Wishes in Cockermouth: “Although a very different experience from judging The Henries in the flesh, it was fantastic to see so many ranges and card publishers together, especially at a time when we haven’t been able to visit tradeshows and see reps/agents regularly. It was so good to vote for publishers and ranges we’ve loved having in the store and sold well for us in hope they may receive recognition for being fabulous. But also so valuable to discover publishers we’ve not stocked or seen before. I have a collection of notes and screenshots from my experience as a judge to refer to when the time comes to be buying new. My favourite category was The Lynn Tait Most Promising Young Designer or Artist Award. It’s exciting to see younger talent and read about these designers. I also loved that this year there is a Best Lockdown Range! The publishers who entered this category all absolutely deserve recognition for putting to paper how we’re all feeling, finding the right words to send and/or giving a laugh when it was needed. All should be applauded for reacting in a positive way in a very challenging time.” Above: Wishes’ Victoria Robinson, during a judging session on the Bank Holiday Monday, with a G&T in hand.
Nigel Williamson, co-owner of House of Cards, Home Counties mini group of card shops: “It was so great to see the creative flare - including in the new Lockdown Range category, many of which gave us all a laugh, which is much needed.” Above: Nigel Williamson in judging mode with his ‘best friend’, Oscar.
Jo Georgiou, owner of The Ark, Stoke Newington: “Wow, that was a mammoth task! Great to see so many entries, one advantage to judging online was the ease at gathering contacts. My notebook is bursting with new publishers and new ranges to check out. An order from Hole in my Pocket is already on its way. Fabulous to see more diversity. So much creativity in this industry and I love that greeting cards are an affordable, accessible way to own mini works of art!”
And the final word has to go to... Sarah Laker, owner of Marple Stationery Supplies, who did not let her camping holiday interfere with her Henries’ judging commitment: “Just WOW! So much to look at!!!!! Really impressed with the standard, such an eclectic mix of amazing designs.” Below: Marple Stationery Supplies’ Sarah Laker, judging The Henries while on her family camping holiday!
Sarah and Paul Henderson, co-owners of the 3 Wishes group: “We so loved the opportunity to be a Henries judge. Although we thoroughly enjoy the normal social aspect of the physical judging days, this year's solution was perfect for us. It was great seeing lots of new designs, and definitely helps make up for the devastating lack of trade shows this year. It was also really good to focus on such a positive activity.”

“I am motivated by the love and humour of my culture to create cards for the brand. Every day I am inspired by conversations and memories made with friends and family. I have a passion to fill the massive gap in the greeting card industry of being the brand that creates cards portraying black men and women in an endearing, positive and relatable light. I have been designing cards since 2017 - I love it so much that plan to be designing them for the rest of my life!”
“I set up Paperwhale Cards & Paper Goods in 2014, after working as an illustrator for several years, and assistant buyer for gifts and stationery at Foyles bookshop in London. Discovering the creativity within the vast variety of greeting cards publishers in the UK, inspired me to illustrate my first collection. I illustrate all of Paperwhale’s papercut collage designs, taking inspiration from my love of nature and wildlife. I love visiting botanical gardens and greenhouses, and I'm passionate about plants!”
Rachel Burt, designer for Hotchpotch London “I have been involved in designing cards since as long as I remember, crafting cards for family and friends throughout childhood. But my more professional involvement in greeting cards began in 2013 when I started freelancing for Tigerprint, part of Hallmark Cards after graduating from Manchester School of Art earlier that year. I have since had the privilege of working for a number of wonderful card publishers and worked alongside so many talented designers who inspire me daily. What I love about designing greeting cards is the diversity and freedom to use and develop a myriad of styles and techniques. There is no greater job satisfaction than seeing designs I have created in stores or proudly sat on someone’s mantelpiece!”.
Alex Gunn, in-house artist for Ling Design “Following a degree at De Montfort university and Glasgow School of Art in 2013, I started in the creative industry doing various internships and illustration jobs, joining GBCC as a mock-up artist in Gloucester in 2016 and progressing to illustrating greeting cards. I then joined Ling Design as an inhouse artist in 2018. I have a passion for illustrative storytelling and narratives, creating quirky characters and using a signature bold colour palette. I love to work with different mediums: digital illustration, acrylic painting and adding a bit of flair to every design, through fun finishes and use of composition, making every card a little piece of art to send for every occasion!”
Charlotte Mason, senior designer of Woodmansterne Publications and The Proper Mail Company “I have worked as an in-house designer for Woodmansterne Publications and The Proper Mail Company for the last six years, since graduating with a degree in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design. Drawing is my passion and I’m incredibly fortunate that I get to be creative every day! All of my designs start life as a hand drawn illustration which I then develop further using lots of techniques, from watercolour painting, embroidery, detailed pencil sketches and calligraphy to name a few. I strive to create original designs that tell a story, with contemporary colour palettes and carefully considered sentiment.
Louise Mulgrew, founder and creative director of Louise Mulgrew “I am the founder of Louise Mulgrew, a Brighton-based, eco-friendly greeting card brand that I launched in 2015. I'm a huge animal lover, and take most of my inspiration from nature, travelling and all the pets and animals I discover along the way. I work with pen and ink, watercolour and gouache and aim to keep a handmade feel in my final card designs, although with the addition of some digital editing on Procreate and Photoshop. The animals I paint are quite realistic proportion-wise, but their expressions and postures are somewhat stylised and I really try to capture the essence of their personality and bring in a bit of humour with the caption. l Down Memory Lane from Cherry Orchard Publishing l Gemma Correll from Ohh Deer l Genius from Woodmansterne Publications l Life Is Rosie from Cath Tate Cards l One Lump or Two from Holy Mackerel l Virtual Safari from Emotional Rescue
Down Memory Lane from Cherry Orchard Publishing Down Memory Lane features both the year of birth and the milestone age. The range features bright iconic artwork and a list of the main events from the year inside the card. The designs are refreshed every year as both the year and the age feature on the card, so there are always new designs coming out. The cards have wide appeal as they cover birthdays from 13 to 100 - with male and female designs. The popularity of the milestone birthdays led Cherry Orchard to introduce milestone anniversary cards too.
Gemma Correll from Ohh Deer Ohh Deer has been working with Gemma Correll since the company began 10 years ago and signed her exclusively for greeting cards five years ago. Gemma's work has become wellknown across the globe and focuses on everyday humour and mental health with Gemma often depicting herself in her illustrations - the honesty within her work tied in with a really clean style gives it an enduring appeal. Her most popular card 'I made it with my bum!' has been Ohh Deer’s biggest selling card over the last 10 years and shows no signs of slowing down.
Genius from Woodmansterne Publications A humour range which has completely stood the test of time - 11 years on and counting! The idea came from the publisher’s art director Ian Blake, after a conversation at a family celebration, about the misconceptions that children have and some of the innocent mistakes that they make in their school work and exams. Every one of us can identify with the humour and context which is sometimes naughty but never vulgar or offensive. A child's outlook on life will change a little with the march of time but their basic perceptions of the world around remain the same, giving the range its longevity and charm! CATEGORY SPONSOR
Life Is Rosie from Cath Tate Cards The Life is Rosie range was the first range Rosie Tate published when she joined her mum Cath Tate in the business. Quite a feat! Little did she know that the range would still be going strong over eight years later! Using retro images from old fashion magazines, Rosie created a range that is still a bestselling range all these years later. The range, with its bright colours and witty text, matched to vintage pictures has stood the test of time because of its versatility. It has stayed fresh and relevant because the images are timeless and the humour is accessible, relatable and up-to-date reflections on modern life and relationships.
One Lump or Two from Holy Mackerel After being approached by Erica Sturla with her fabulous designs Holy Mackerel launched One Lump or Two as a range of 36 cards, never dreaming that almost 10 years later it would have become a collection of around 400 cards, with Welsh and Polish language versions and a host of regional variations from Falmouth to Dumfries! The core of the range are the incredible polymer clay figures created by Erica, and the warm humour of the words which lend themselves to a huge breadth of occasions, from cards for cousins to 23rd anniversary cards!
Virtual Safari from Emotional Rescue This range has remained a bestseller both on the high street and in the grocers for the past 20 years. Its specialist design has just surpassed its 3000th design and the range continues to grow. The range has been expanded to cover seasons, occasions, relations and age.

This award recognises the pivotal role publishers play in providing a good service to independent retailers. The finalists in this category were arrived at as a result of an exhaustive poll, involving over 2,500 independent greeting card retailers, who were each asked to nominate their top three card suppliers on the service front over the last year. These responses were then correlated, awarding three points to all first choices, two points to those mentioned as second choices and one point for all third choices. These points were then totalled to arrive as the dozen finalists. There are three awards in this category – a Bronze, Silver and ultimate Gold, that will be presented to the top three scoring suppliers in the retailer poll.

Golden Ticket To Print History
Some may hold with the view that ’50 is the new 40’, but Sheffield-based greeting card printer Loxleys can do much better than that, going all out to make sure the company’s 166th birthday this month is a celebration shared with the entire industry - through an all-encompassing Golden Ticket giveaway, promising a stream of prizes galore to publishers, retailers and suppliers. PG goes back in time, tracking the company’s history as well as the evolution of greeting card printing. “While ‘Happy 166th Birthday’ is not a caption that features on the millions of greeting cards we produce for our greeting card publisher customers, it is a big deal for us and something worth marking,” states Loxleys’ ceo Richard Bacon. Wednesday 14 October 2020 is Loxleys’ actual 166th birthday, with the ensuing years having seen it grow from
humble beginnings to the northern printing powerhouse it is today. No stranger to hard times, in the space of its 166 years, the specialist printer has endured two World Wars, two factory fires and many, many industry changes. Amazingly, the company can trace its origins back to Saturday 14 October 1854 the exact day when two brothers, William and
Marking the milestone “We had big plans to celebrate our wonderful heritage this year with a big party for customers, employees and industry friends, but unfortunately the virus and the rules associated with it scuppered these, so we came up with the idea of a Willie Wonka Birthday Giveaway that is open to everyone in the industry,” explained Alice Buck, the company’s marketing co-ordinator. For the whole of October the company is encouraging all publishers (whether Loxleys customers or not), retailers and trade suppliers to enter a Willie Wonka style raffle giveaway (with contact name, business name, address and telephone and email address), via the company’s posts on Instagram and LinkedIn or by contacting Ms Willie Wonka aka Alice by email (alice.buck@loxleys.co.uk) who will then register them against a raffle ticket number. “We’d love everyone to get involved. This isn’t just open to our customers but everyone with prizes varying from fancy champagne to a voucher, money off a print order with us as well as lots of other secret treats,” added Alice. 78

Edward Loxley - said to be descendants of Robert de Lockesley (better known as Robin Hood!) - opened a stationers and printers, located at No.19 Fargate, in the busy bustle of Sheffield City Centre. Known then as The Loxleys Brothers, the company set itself apart from the competition at the time by targeting the commercial community, unlike their competitors who focused efforts on traditional forms of print including newspapers. In 1921, due to continued growth, the printing arm of the business was transferred to a larger premises. Originally built as an

Tony’s memory lane Tony Lorriman, managing director of Loxleys, reminisces on the changes he remembers during his early days at Loxleys… “My first memory of Loxleys was sitting in our rather grand board room being interviewed by the then owner and managing director Tim Carrington. I was fortunate that Tim decided to give me the job of trainee sales person and the rest as they say is history! I have now been at Loxleys for 23 years and during that time the biggest changes I’ve seen are technology related. Back in the late 90s when I joined Loxleys there were no PDFs, digital proofs or laser imaged plates. Repro was old school with original flat artwork, transparencies, scanners, film, cromalins and wet proofs. Platemaking was a skill as opposed to a mouse click! There were hardly any computers on the premises when I joined, mobile phones were the size of a small house brick, sales people navigated around the country using road atlases and A to Zs, while hand written faxes and memos were the usual form or communication - and digital print technology didn’t even exist!” Above: Tony Lorriman, presenting an award at last year’s Henries as Loxleys is a loyal sponsor.
Empire Roller Skating rink, Loxley Bros acquired the Victorian Atlas Printing Works building, which despite two catastrophic fires (one in 1923 and the other in the 1950s) that virtually destroyed the premises, remains ‘home’ to Loxleys today. The one-time rollerskating rink was deemed an excellent home for the large printing machines and movement of goods as there were no obstructing columns or roof supports, and so the factory was rebuilt in a similar style. While Loxleys’ connection to greeting cards goes back to the 1920s (when alongside the catalogues, brochures, magazines and high-class letterpress printing, it also undertook lithographic colour printing of labels, posters, general advertising literature and cards). However, it was in the 1980s that the company made its move to become a greeting card specialist printer,
beginning a relationship with card publisher Celebration Arts of Corby (which became part of UKG). By 1984, greeting card production constituted over 40% of the company’s turnover and it has grown to become its core business ever since. Having become part of the Sherwood Group in 2008 (when former owner Tim Carrington handed over the reins for health reasons), the company has gone on to produce 150 million greeting
cards a year for a multitude of card publishers. While keen to celebrate the company’s heritage, as Tony Lorriman, Loxleys’ md stresses, the focus has to be on remaining relevant for the challenges of the future. “Loxleys remains 100% committed to the greeting card market and it is exciting to think what the future greeting card manufacturing factory will look like,” says Tony. “Digital print and finishing technology will continue to develop with larger format digital machines enabling on demand production at much greater volumes than now, orders will be placed online and be sent straight to production machines, robots will work on the factory, delivery vehicles may be driver-less and warehouse stock holdings will be much lower as digital production enables publishers to order exactly what they want when they want it. To survive 166 years in print Loxleys has always adapted with the times and moving forward this will be no different - as technology changes so Loxleys will change.”

A Whole Lotta Rosie
This time last year, illustrator and watercolourist Rosie Brooks had just been declared a winner of the License This! competition for her Opera Little concept, based on her depictions of characters from the world’s greatest operas and ballets. Some 12 months on, Rosie has several card ranges published by Holy Mackerel, while the recent appointment of This is Iris as her licensing agency is likely to spawn many more collaborations across all manner of products. PG found out more about this talented artist who is hitting the high notes. Rosie tells her tale…“As I studied Music at Durham University before becoming an illustrator (doing a Masters in Children’s Book Illustration at Angela Ruskin University in Cambridge) this has had a huge influence on my work - a lot of it is musically themed! I have also created illustrations for lots of musical clients over the years, including the Royal Opera House, Wigmore Hall, The London Philharmonic and Sir Paul McCartney. I've also recently collaborated with Classic FM, celebrating its annual Hall of Fame which has been such a joy to work on! Ever since studying music, I have been fascinated by the fact that classical music is rarely celebrated through illustration. While there are lots of examples of myths and legends, Shakespeare and fairytales, I realised there was nothing out there to champion operas and ballets. To my mind, the opera plots and characters are some of the most visually bonkers of any genre I can think of, including Above left: Rosie Brooks’ pen, ink and watercolour artworks are gaining prominence. Top right: One of Rosie’s many musicalthemed designs from Holy Mackerel. Above right: Rosie was asked by Gibson Guitars to create illustrations to wrap a 10’ statue of a Les Paul electric guitar as part of the London Guitar Town exhibition. Her design idea was selected by Sir Paul McCartney who then asked Rosie to illustrate a real Les Paul, which he has played on tour. Right: A topical design from Holy Mackerel.
pirates, princesses, kings, queens, zombies, ghouls, a lot of dragons and masked balls galore! A number of years ago the Royal Opera House asked me to illustrate a few of its Schools’ Matinee programmes for some upcoming operas, and this got me thinking. The opera and ballet plots are so rich with stories and characters that it inspired me to embark on a huge project aiming to illustrate the top 50 plots of the world's greatest operas and ballet, celebrating the genres in a way that is completely new. I have now created an enormous library of artwork and it is still growing. My Opera Little concept (which has since developed into The Spoon is in the Lid brand) caught the attention of the judges for the License This! competition at Brand Licensing Europe last year and I was very lucky to have been one of the two 2019 winners. I am also delighted to have recently partnered with greeting card company Holy Mackerel and am extremely excited to be working with This is Iris on my new licensing journey. The impact of this year has been devastating to the performing arts worldwide, so my artwork collection, under The Spoon is in the Lid brand, is my love letter to them.”
Knowing the score Having started working with Rosie at the end of last year, Holy Mackerel has now published three card ranges featuring her work - Rosie Tinted (an occasions range), Small Fry (a mini card collection) and Con Amore, music/ballet/opera-themed. And there’s more to come very soon. Whole Lotta Rosie is a follow up occasions range which will kick off with all the anniversaries from 1st to 15th, then every 5th year anniversary up to 55. These will be followed by lots more general occasions designs. Above right: One of the new anniversary designs from Holy Mackerel’s Whole Lotta Rosie range. Far right: Rosie is delighted to now being represented by This is Iris for licensing opportunities. Left: Rosie was selected to be a creative ambassador for the Department of International Trade’s Great Britain Campaign, to reflect her work’s international appeal.

Sympathy
The editorial, design and letterpress printing hit the right notes. This is a tricky send to design, but Woodmansterne gets it perfectly. Great bright colours. They sell repeatedly. Local artist’s architectural collages sell well. Great fun observations. The ‘jigsaw’ design really resonated during lockdown. Great daft animal illustrations. Haven’t bought from this company for years, but I love these.

Bright and cheerful and selling really well. A really good range for men. Very original and manages to be clever and silly at the same time. So funny and very topical, with new designs appearing all the time. Featuring a lot of east Anglian artists, they been very popular with our customers since day one. Lots of animals, wildlife, rural and coastal scenes that are solid sellers for all types of occasions. Quirky and bright, but thoughtful cards for all sorts of situations. Original photographic images that work particular well on age cards. Super bright and appealing. Cute designs that stand out due to the environmentally-friendly paper confetti. The paper is excellent quality and the designs are ever popular. Eye-poppingly bright and jolly. Pebbles and mini animals are great little ‘thinking of you’ gifts. These are just as popular as the cards!
