The show must go on

January has perhaps not been filled with as much hope and positivity as normal, or should I say as it used to be pre-Covid, as there’s no denying everyone is facing challenges going into 2023. The cost-of-living crisis is affecting consumer confidence and spending, and following that golden quarter, people will now be beginning to tighten their belts.

Retailers have received support with energy bills over the winter, up until March, and while a new scheme has been put in place by the government to support businesses further after March, the level of financial input is set to drop dramatically at that point.

A recent report from the Centre for Retail Research showed that shop closures saw their highest rate for five years in 2022, with over 17,000 sites closing. This coupled with the British Retail Consortium’s warning of a challenging first half, make for worrying reading as we enter 2023.

Alongside that, the shortage of helium and subsequent price hikes, are hitting party retailers hard. As I write this column, it has been announced that after a week of speculation, US retail giant, Party City has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

General consensus in the industry is that it’s going to be a tough few months at least, but as usual in the world of party, nobody is sitting back and waiting for the tough times to hit. Instead, suppliers are innovating. Balloon manufacturers are introducing new lines of airfilled balloons, costume suppliers are expanding accessory lines to facilitate lower cost dressing up options, and the industry is focussing in on making the annual events better than ever. As one exec outlined in the feedback feature – “Key seasons seem to be holding up well”.

As such, we are also looking forward in this issue to World Book Day, which returns to normal classroom activity for the first time this year following varied Covid restrictions over the last three years. The dress up sector has a range of new licensed and generic costumes as well as some teacher offerings, which are sometimes overlooked, ready for the event.

And the next few months hold much to look forward to in business terms. New year at Max Publishing usually mean only one thing –show issues. And with a distinct lack of shows to write about for the past few years, it’s been really refreshing to hear the buzz in the party industry as many of you prepare to return to Spielwarenmesse and Spring Fair in the coming weeks.

There is a plethora of exciting new products ready for their trade fair debuts, and both retailers and suppliers are excited to get back to face-to-face meetings in that distinctive show floor environment.

We look forward to seeing you on said show floor in a few weeks time.

Industry positive ahead of 2023

Industry execs are hopeful that despite a challenging economic climate, and continuing supply issues, the year ahead will be strong overall.

As a fresh set of challenges face the party industry, including supply problems with helium, many are diversifying product offerings. Jonathan Grassi, vice president of Grabo Balloons, explained: “The year 2023 will be an important year, probably of changes, caused by the limitation of the use of helium for which we have equipped ourselves properly. We will present at Spring Fair our drop bases, a real base that allows most of our air balloons to be inflated and placed on this base becoming stand-up balloons.”

Others have high hopes for new ranges and milestones. Tony Lewis, Disguise’s director of sales and marketing, commented: “2023 is an incredible year for Disney with their 100th anniversary, Frozen 10th anniversary and two highly anticipated movies in June and November so it should be very promising. Let's go for 2023.”

The nature of the party industry will keep consumers spending, said Mark Brett, sole UK agent for Boland: “Despite all the travails facing the marketplace, we still see growth and development within the party market. The consumer will still spend on having a good time. That may mean cutting back but within the retail market place the consumer can create

their own fun for not a great deal of money. And fun is something we all crave for.”

Key events are also still bringing in sales, said Elliott Peckett, director of Smiffys: “There will inevitably be some caution on the high street and online across the UK in 2023, but less so in the EU, US and Australia who are all coping better economically.

“However, key seasons seem to be holding up well – on top of our record 2022 Halloween performance, we have had a superb pre-sell for Halloween 2023 across all markets, and Carnival in Europe is back with a bang. World Book Day in the UK will be the first since 2020 to not have been impacted by Covid restrictions and pre-sales are strong on the back of that.”

Sergio Battaner, sales and marketing director, Palmer Agencies, summed up: “2023 comes with a fresh set of cost-ofliving challenges but, once again, we’ll aim to be resourceful, savvy and clever enough to offer value for money, new ideas and super customer service.”

Party City files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

Following speculation in the media, the US retail giant filed for Chapter 11 on Tuesday 17 January.

Party City said it had reached a pre-negotiated agreement with a bondholder group to support an ‘expedited restructuring’ which it expects to complete in the second quarter.

The retailer reported $1 billion to $10 billion of estimated assets and liabilities, and said it had obtained $150 million in debtor-inpossession financing to support its operations.

Party City’s subsidiaries outside of the US, its franchise stores, and its Anagram business were not part of the bankruptcy proceedings. The company said its stores would continue to remain open.

The retailer recently reported that it had received a continued listing notification from the New York Stock

Exchange, as it was no longer in compliance with the criteria, which requires listed companies to maintain an average closing share price of at least $1 over a consecutive 30-day trading period.

Late last year, the company

also lowered its earnings outlook to $130 to $150 million from its initial guidance for 2022 of $275 to $300 million, and announced it was embarking on a costcutting plan of $30 million.

Palmer Agencies unveils new strapline

The company wants to relay the new motto to its customers and colleagues in the trade as it aims to become the key partner for all the trade so everyone can ‘Win the party’.

Palmer Agencies – Win the party – is not about medals or prizes, but about having fun and enjoying what we do – making sure the company brings positive energy and constructive ideas to all the industry.

Sergio Battaner, sales and marketing director, commented: “We’re not here to draw the party, let alone lose the party. We’re here, in this very industry, to win the party with all our friends, customers and colleagues. Even in complicated economic times like the ones we live in, we will always aim to win the party, giving our customer the products they need, the service they expect and deserve, and ideas that will bring more business to work with us.”

ILFD Group reports 78% sales growth

Turnover for October grew by 78% versus October 2021, as the company dressed over 300,000 people worldwide for Halloween.

ILFD experienced its best Halloween ever this year, with some of its newest lines taking the number one spots on UK marketplaces including eBay and Amazon. New launches included skeleton, vampire and devil cheerleader costumes for both adults and children.

Costume designer, Lewis Saye, commented: “Spotting our costumes on social media and television is one of the most rewarding things about the job.”

Harlequin Party Shop to close

The 32 year-old Lewisham business closed its doors for the final time on 31 December 2022.

Owners Karen and Pete Dawson (pictured) posted to their business Facebook page to inform customers that after 32 years of trading, they have made the decision to close the shop for good.

The post said: “We have met some wonderful customers and made some great new friends and regulars that mean the world to us.

“As the song goes ‘I’ve had the time of my life’.”

The post has so far received over 100 messages of luck and thanks for the couple, who have made the decision to retire.

Above: Karen and Pete Dawson have made the decision to retire.

The company merits its in-house dispatch system as a key factor in its success, as well as its aim to cater for all sizes to help consumers feel comfortable about dressing up. Some costumes range up to a 4XLarge and the majority are available in plus sizes.

Year to date, ILFD is about 40% up and has no plans to slow down as it eyes US and Canada as its next growth markets. The company is partnering with distribution centres within each country to allow it to fulfil express delivery and dramatically increase orders.

The group also launched Cazaar.co.uk – the party marketplace – last year, which has been flourishing with over 25 toy, costume and partyware sellers in the UK offering next day delivery.

George Nesnas, director of ILFD Group, said: “We continued to produce more stocks during Covid even though the party industry saw downturns. Our ethos has always been to produce affordable costumes and accessories and offer an incredible service to customers. We offered next day delivery up to 10pm throughout the peak season and this contributed to a lot of new business.

“We are now out of Covid and having high stock levels of great products has really paid off. As we turn our eyes to foreign markets we are still planning on a record growth year in the UK for 2023.”

Right: ILFD is about 40% up year-on-year and has no plans to slow down.

Rubies introduces the Green Collection

On the evening of Thursday 2 February, 2023, from 6pm, RedNight will premiere with exhibitors inviting trade fair guests to parties on their stands.

Networking in atmospheric surroundings is the ‘big thing’ at the 2023 event, and the organiser promises music and culinary delights at RedNight, as exhibitors and visitors make new contacts, get back into conversation with long-established business partners, and enjoy the evening together.

Entry to RedNight is included in the ticket, both for trade visitors and media, with no separate registration required.

Spielwarenmesse has also put new measures in place to help attendees plan their visit more effectively. All participating companies, new exhibitors, brands and licences can be found quickly and easily on the new app and online. Relevant entries can then be saved in a favourites list.

Following the successful launch of its adaptive dress-up, Rubies has launched another game changing product range.

A key part of Rubies’ ongoing strategy has been to change both the way it packages its products and the products themselves. So the company is delighted to launch the new Green costume collection.

Featuring characters from some of the company’s key licences, including DC, Marvel and Star Wars, these costumes have been specially crafted with the environment in mind.

The Green Collection is designed to be as environmentally conscious as possible, manufactured with 100% responsibly sourced materials and recycled polyester from plastic bottles. Costumes will be available in a wide range of children’s sizes from toddler to 10 year-olds. The range will include characters such as Marvel’s Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain American, and Star Wars’ Storm Trooper and Darth Vader.

Designed to be more durable, reliable, reusable and energy and resource efficient than ever, the Green Collection is also machine washable, allowing for multiple uses, and passing down to future generations. Rubies has also removed all plastic from the packaging, including replacing the hangers with FSC certified cardboard alternatives.

Mike O’Connell, managing director, commented: “This is not the first step Rubies have taken towards becoming a more conscious business and it won’t be the last, but it is certainly the biggest leap we have taken. From initial conception right the way through to production and distribution, we knew that this range of costumes would bring real change.

“We are proud that we are using our position as industry leaders to create a wave of transformation and that we can be a positive example as a business. We’d also like to thank the licences we work with for their support of this significant stride forward and the support to ensure we produced costumes to represent their incredible characters, encourage play and are green.”

Single-use plastic cutlery and plates banned in England

The government has confirmed that singleuse items such as plastic cutlery, plates and polystyrene trays will be banned in England.

The date the ban will come into effect is not yet clear, but environment secretary Therese Coffey, said the move would help protect the environment for future generations.

Government figures suggest that 1.1 billion single-use plates and over four billion pieces of plastic cutlery are used in England every year, which often ends up in landfill and do not decompose.

The confirmation of the

move from Defra follows a long consultation.

Therese Coffey commented: “I am determined to drive forward action to tackle the issue head on. We’ve already taken major steps in recent years – but we know there is more to do, and we have again listened to the public’s calls.

“This new ban will have a huge impact to stop the pollution of billions of pieces of plastic and help to protect the natural environment for future generations.”

Amscan introduces new ecofriendly party basics range

The company has redesigned its formats and colours, placing sustainability at the forefront of its development. Across 18 colours and seven formats at launch, the eco solutions will join the company’s core solid colour assortment.

The 23cm plate features a natural, non-chemically modified coating, making it more ecofriendly and recyclable. The new products are also labelled with the relevant information to make recycling easy for consumers. The plates are FSC certified products.

33cm 3ply luncheon napkins are printed onto a white background to give a vibrant colour, and are now home compostable, as well as being FSC certified.

Amscan’s new 227ml paper cups feature the latest required warnings, making them compliant for the EU zone. Meanwhile, the tablecovers are available in two formats – paper and reusable wipe clean plastic options. Both are available in 18 colours and measure 137 x 274cm. The reusable version is 40gsm plastic and the paper option is also FSC certified.

The reusable plastic cutlery in the range comes in two options: A mixed 24pk of 12 forks and 12 knives and also a 24 pack of spoons. The items are now top rack dishwasher safe.

All of the packaging will also display the sorting and recycling logos, making it easier for customers to dispose of correctly, and also do their bit for the planet.

A mistake is only a mistake once

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT CLUB GREEN?

I initially joined Club Green in 1997 as a university student looking for summer work. I was fortunate to work a number of holiday periods with the company before joining full-time in January 2000 as online and export sales manager. I left in May 2002 and spent 18 years working in events and marketing (including holding a number of c-level positions), before being invited to re-join Club Green in May 2021 as director of operations.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT AT THE COMPANY?

When I re-joined the company in 2021, we faced a number of significant challenges (that were a consequence of the pandemic, and certainly not unique to Club Green) around the consistency of our stock levels and the reliability of our supply chain. I’m sure many readers experienced the same issues. We spent a number of months reforecasting our orders with factories and we worked really hard with our suppliers to make sure we had the right stocks at the right time to fulfil all our deliveries.

That hard work in mid-2021 paid off, and throughout 2022 our stock levels were both reliable and consistent – providing our customers with the confidence they needed to not just stock our products but to increase the number of our ranges on their shelves.

FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR JOB?

I have always been a big believer in empowerment. If you give your team ownership of their targets, they will work hard to achieve them. We share information on business performance with the team at regular meetings, and set company targets for everyone to work towards.

We set company targets not sales targets, because there is no point making a sale if the products are not fit for purpose, or the stock is not there to sell. Every member

of the team is responsible, in part, for a consignment or a pallet leaving the building and only once it has left do we add its value to the target number.

Weekly and monthly targets are set, and I really enjoy updating the numbers. There is a real buzz around the building when we hit the number, and a real drive and determination to do better when we don’t.

WHO IS THE UNSUNG HERO OF THE COMPANY?

We are extremely fortunate to have a loyal and committed team, many of whom have been with us for over 10 years. We have always encouraged a positive team ethos – we succeed or fail as one team, so I’m not going to single out any one individual. Every member of the team plays their part, knows how they are part of our success, and is both passionate and committed to see the business remain sustainable and continue to grow.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHANGE WITHIN THE PARTY INDUSTRY THAT YOU HAVE SEEN SINCE YOU HAVE WORKED IN IT?

I think we are seeing some seismic changes at the moment. Sky News recently reported that 50 retailers a day are closing, and many of those are inevitably going to be in our sector. That is a terrible loss for the business owners and their employees, and a real challenge for our sector. Hopefully the current economic slowdown will be shallow and swift and we see people back in our high streets in the spring.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?

The first chief executive I worked for, David Main, had a huge amount of experience. He taught two valuable lessons that I have never forgotten. Firstly, he always encouraged me to believe in my own ability and to have the mindset that nothing wasn’t achievable if I worked hard enough.

Secondly, and arguably more importantly, he taught me to take ownership of my mistakes and to learn from them. He would always say that ‘a mistake is only a mistake once’, which is absolutely true. In business nothing stands still, everything is constantly changing and evolving so we must learn, adapt and move forward.

BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE TAKEN AWAY FROM THE LAST YEAR?

For me two words characterise 2022, ‘resilience’ and ‘confidence’. Resilience because 2022 was a year of the unexpected. The war in Ukraine, energy price hikes and high inflation all impacted on consumer confidence, and caused the whole sector to reforecast expectations for the year. We had to be extremely reactive to market changes and sufficiently fleet of foot not to get caught out. I think we achieved both, and we continued to deliver for our customers.

Confidence, because 2022 reminded us to be confident about our products and our customer service. Despite the economic challenges, our business remained strong and we have started 2023 with an increased customer base, eight new product ranges and over 200 new lines. Our good stock levels meant we could fulfil orders and meet client schedules throughout the year, and continued to grow our positive profile and reputation within the party sector.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THE PARTY INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I’m a big fan of Christmas, it is a lovely time of year to spend with family, and I love seeing my children, Mia and Max, open their presents. They are still at the age where it’s magical. What’s not so much fun is then coming back to work in January and having to plan for the forthcoming Christmas –new products, new supplies, new orders etc. Sometimes it feels like Christmas never ends. For 2024 perhaps we could all agree to start planning in February instead of January, so we all get a break?

IF YOU DIDN’T WORK IN THE PARTY INDUSTRY, WHAT INDUSTRY WOULD YOU WORK IN AND WHY?

Having spent a lot of my career outside the industry, I feel I still have a lot to prove and a lot to achieve before thinking about anything else. This is a great industry with some fantastically passionate people working hard to deliver great products to their clients and I am thoroughly enjoying being part of it.

However, I have always been a huge F1 racing fan, and have always been fascinated by both the politics and economics of the sport. If I had the opportunity to be a racing driver, I would jump ship straight away. However, I think I’m probably too old now and would certainly need a diet first.

Gemar set for UK lift-off

Gemar UK will be headed up by John-Paul Banbury, Mark Drury and Richard Turnbull, who have a wealth of experience in the balloon and party industry.

The launch of Gemar UK marks an exciting development for the Gemar family, as, together with Gemar, the UK team plans to grow and further establish the brand in the UK.

Headquartered in Italy, Gemar already has a strong track record of sales in the UK. Now, with the creation of Gemar UK, the stage is set for further exciting growth.

Genesio Rocca, vice president of the familyowned Gemar business, commented: “It’s with real pride and excitement that I can announce the creation of Gemar UK – a new business with responsibility for delivering the full Gemar experience to this high potential market.

“Over the last 18 months, thanks to the hard work of the local team, UK demand has grown rapidly. Now we’ve decided the time’s right to strengthen the support and service and bring the UK into the amazing Gemar community.

“This association marks an exciting new chapter, and we’re really looking forward to seeing how our brand develops in the capable hands of John-Paul, Mark and Richard.”

Gemar UK will stock all Gemar products, distributing from its warehouse in the centre of the UK. The division will provide all the benefits of a UK supplier, including the fully stocked warehouse offering two-day lead times on all orders. Gemar UK will also offer a dedicated training and marketing support service for all customers, as well as extensive product knowledge, industry leading events and expert guidance.

The company will be celebrating the launch of Gemar UK at Spring Fair from 5-9 February, 2023. The stand will feature new product launches, three daily demonstrations from Gemar, and industry renowned artists, as well as the opportunity to meet the team and explore new opportunities.

John-Paul Banbury, the new head of Gemar UK, concluded: “Gemar UK is an incredible opportunity for us to work alongside such an amazing, well-respected brand and company. Gemar is a family business like mine with innovative ideas, excellent product, with an equally excellent price point.

“An area that stood out to me is their incredible ‘Go Green’ project and the whole company ethos that is unmatched by anyone in our industry. Gemar has an amazingly supportive community and the Spring Fair’s a great opportunity to meet the new team and see what’s on the horizon.”

The launch of Gemar UK has also been warmly welcomed by trade customers. Bex, owner of Blow it with Bex, commented: “I’ve been using Gemar balloons behind the scenes for a little while now. Well, I’ve fallen in love with the brand. From the insane colour range to the thickness of the latex and its super long necks, I can’t rate the products enough.

“The launch of Gemar UK means that you will now be able to easily get your hands on all the stock here in the UK from all major distributors. I was lucky enough to be involved in the launch of the new Prosecco colour. If you’ve seen it on Instagram, wait ‘til you see it in person, the colour is stunning. My academy members can’t wait to get their hands on it and have the Gemar products readily available to all us UK artists.

“I think Gemar will be the next big thing in the balloon industry and I’m super excited to work with Gemar UK some more and see where this year takes them.”

Looking back and looking ahead

I’ve only been involved with the NCA since 2014, so my perspective is short. But in those years, and especially in the past year as we’ve researched the association’s history in preparation for the centennial, I’ve observed a few key things. Let me share three with you.

First, since the beginning of the organisation, personal business concerns have routinely trumped organisational loyalties. Case in point: The president of the NCA, Pam Markel, has been reading old association publications and came across a 1927 article written by one of the NCA’s founders, John Hansen, who reported that when he crossed the United States seeking members to join the group, nearly everyone figuratively slammed the door in his face. They all thought he was trying to steal their great ideas. Fortunately, he eventually found enough fellow travelers who believed in the value of sharing ideas, that the NCA was launched.

More recently, it’s very clear to me that while members value the history and fellowship of our group, when it comes time to pay their annual dues, they carefully measure the cost against the business value they received. Did I learn something from an NCA event? Did I save money with one of the discount programs? Did I use a resource that opened a new market? OK, I’ll write the cheque.

My second observation is that perhaps the greatest value the NCA

provides to members is the opportunity to network with other members. You might think this contradicts my previous observation, but the networking I’m talking about is the kind that helps them choose products or crack a new market or learn about a new technology. I believe that when members talk to each other one-toone about a business issue, they learn more than they do by attending a formal event. If another shop owner says, “This is a good product, you should stock it,” they believe them.

The value of networking is one reason Covid was so stressful – normal networking didn’t happen. Now that we’re easing out of that crisis, networking is returning, and that’s a relief.

My final observation definitely contradicts my first observation, but you’ll understand: In the long run, association members value the friendships they made through the association more than anything else. Long after they’ve retired or otherwise left the costuming business, many former members still maintain relationships with each other. Our retirees – even those who don’t actively participate in the group any more – are some of the most devoted advocates the NCA has.

That leads to my final point of this column: Our grand celebration of the 100th birthday. It will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana on 4 – 6 August. We’ll enjoy a lot of memories of the group’s long history, but we’ll also spend many hours helping members build their business through hands-on classes. Everyone is invited – current members, prospective members, past members. I guarantee that the event will be entirely worthwhile for all of them. Learn more at www.costumers.org.

Below: The National Costumers Association was founded in 1923
Rarely does an organisation exist a century or more, but that’s the mark the National Costumers Association has reached this year, 2023. The group was founded in 1923, and naturally, we plan a major celebration for its 100th birthday. Before I discuss the party, though, let me share a couple of observations about the group’s history.

FEED BACK

2022 was the year restrictions were finally dropped after the pandemic and life began to return to normal. However, the war in Ukraine, Brexit, and many other events, have caused a number of challenges worldwide. Progressive Party took stock of the past year including what went well and what was difficult, and looked ahead to 2023 with some key execs.

THE YEAR AHEAD

“This year we stand poised, ready to soar the new future.

The world of balloons is changing, and the possibilities are endless.

“Looking back at 2022 among the many difficult challenges we faced, we did find new opportunities and a few bright spots, and personally I prefer to ponder more on the opportunities, rather than dwell on the negatives.

“First and foremost, we are satisfied that our business, that had rebounded strongly in 2021, continued to grow at a more sustainable pace.

“Gemar is entering 2023 with many new ambitious projects, starting with our commitment to sustainability, as we present balloons which are 100% biobased, made with renewable caoutchouc sourced from FSC certified plantations.

“We are also introducing Gemar Creator, a unique design tool to create balloon compositions using cutting edge digital resources. More than just a design tool, it’s a marketing tool that will completely rewrite the rules of balloon design and grow the professional use of balloons.

“Another important project involves people, as we just announced the creation of Gemar UK, a new business created to deliver the full Gemar experience to the UK market. Gemar UK will be headed up by John-Paul Banbury, Mark Drury and Richard Turnbull, who have a vast experience in the balloon and party industry. Together with Gemar, the UK team plans to grow and further establish Gemar in the UK. This association marks an exciting new chapter for our business and will bring the UK into the amazing Gemar community.

“What do I see in the future? I imagine a future inspired by balloons.”

“Our enviable distribution network across Europe has grown over 2022, with the acquisition of our new fulfilment centre in Central Europe. In addition to wider distribution than ever before, our German market presence has

increased significantly and as a business we have strengthened our teams across the continent, including the hiring of Justin McGiffin as head of licensing and Pete Silver as head of sales. Being able to navigate the peak season with Halloween and the festive period might be perceived as a challenge by others, but to us, with our enviable relationship with suppliers and lightning-fast shipping and dispatch across the entire continent, this year went smoother than ever... and busier.

“In 2023, we have high hopes for a

“Disguise continues to expand and grow in EMEA as a business and we expect to see further reach in existing territories. More great product is being developed in partnership with our licensors and customers and further expansion of our licensed portfolio.

“We’ve launched in April 2022, our huge Disney range through Europe and have established our distribution network in each single EU country. In order to cover the different channels (mass, toys specialists, party stores, apparel, discounters..), we are working both directly with retailers and with distributors all over Europe.

“2022 was a building year with very positive and encouraging results. 2023 is an incredible year for Disney with their 100th anniversary, Frozen 10th anniversary and two highly anticipated movies in June and November so it should be very promising. Let’s go for 2023.”

surge in popularity for generic costumes around World Book Day and Halloween, building on their success from last year’s Halloween. On top of this, blockbuster film premieres and streaming service releases like The Flash and the Mandalorian and Star Wars will inject freshness into the market and rejuvenate the character and costume selection for consumers.

On the other hand, Disney and Warner Brothers centennial celebrations will create more of a buzz than seen before around their product and media array.”

26 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023 PROGRESSIVE PARTY EUROPE

“2022 was a pretty good year for Boland, well actually it was an amazing year, smashing previous years throughout Europe. In September 2022 a brand new catalogue was launched with a huge number of new products and there is a great deal more to come in 2023 (to be announced mid-year).

“Despite all the travails facing the market place (for the most part the whole of Europe is facing the same problems as the UK), we still see growth and development within the party market. The consumer will still spend on having a good time. That may mean cutting back on going to restaurants, clubs, and perhaps even major events but within the retail market place the consumer can create their own fun for not a great deal of money. And fun is something we all crave for.

“Parallel markets (fun and pleasure time markets) are reporting record 2023 bookings such as the travel companies. Glastonbury (tickets £300) was sold out in minutes. If you have the right product and you have good stocks, then I suggest that you will have a good 2023.”

DJAMILLA SARIS marketeer, Boland

“2022 has been a good year for Boland and we are excited for the new year. Especially since we will be expanding our assortment even further with great new products. From fun new inflatable accessories to scary Halloween items that will definitely give you goose bumps. But that’s not all. There are a lot of fun trends happening in the party market that Boland loves to explore more, therefore we are working on some great new decoration lines and are expanding our Pride assortment with multiple progress items. Enough to look forward to in 2023.”

“Finally coming out of Covid restrictions was the highlight of 2022. Although the date varied across the UK, 2022 saw the end of regional restrictions and a return to life as we knew it before Covid. For the industry, this meant a return to celebrations and a recovery for the costume and party industry, although it did come too late in England for World Book Day. In Europe, Covid restrictions hugely impacted the success of Carnival in 2022, so it was great to see these finally lifted on the continent and in our other markets. All this pent-up energy and frustration manifested itself with a record Halloween for Smiffys in 2022, so we won’t forget that in a hurry either. Finally, it saw the expansion of our retail stores to five, so despite a Covid-effected start, 2022 was a huge improvement on the previous two years.

“The biggest challenge was stock availability – no doubt about it. Our colleagues and suppliers in China are only now seeing the easing of restrictions, which is a huge relief. However, the impact has been enormous with production lead times doubling through 2021 and 2022, container prices increasing 10-fold and product costs increasing massively, not to mention UK inflationary costs. However, we have seen a return to near normality on lead times and container cost and availability, and despite some late Halloween deliveries, we are rapidly getting back on track with our all year round stock levels, so onwards and upwards.

“There will inevitably be some caution on the high street and online across the UK in 2023, but less so in the EU, US and Australia who are all coping better economically. However, key seasons seem to be holding up well – on top of our record 2022 Halloween performance, we have had a superb pre-sell for Halloween 2023 across all markets, and Carnival in Europe is back with a bang. World Book Day in the UK will be the first since 2020 to not have been impacted by Covid restrictions and pre-sales are strong on the back of that.

“Our latest collection to drop: Warner Bros. Discovery Horror range, featuring classic characters such as Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees, Annabel, Pennywise the Clown from IT & Beetlejuice, has had a phenomenal response from our customers and pre-sell orders are very impressive. Further, we have seen strong demand for our Disney, Netflix & Nintendo ranges we are distributing, including characters from Toy Story, Super Mario, Squid Game, Disney Princesses and more.

“As well as our licence collection, the response to our new Smiffys & Fever lines at the US Halloween show in Las Vegas this January has been superb, which bodes really well for 2023. We have launched a new range of Fever vegan leather chokers and harnesses for this festival season which were a huge hit at the show.

“Challenges in 2023 will be offering value for money to customers – whilst disposable income may be under pressure, events will happen and occasions will be celebrated, but people will look to get the most return for their money, which has always been central to our design and product range philosophy. We cater for all price points across our costume and accessory range and allow retailers to offer the consumer a good choice and the opportunity to up-sell and cross-sell wherever possible. Based on our forward orders received so far this year, retailers are backing Smiffys to help meet this challenge.”

SERGIO

“2022 came quick and with a set of challenges that made us become more resourceful and savvy than ever before. The supply chain problems became more acute than ever but, our customers and suppliers were all understanding of what needed to be done and we’re glad to say it all came to a good end.

“2023 comes with a fresh set of cost of living challenges but, once again, we’ll aim to be resourceful, savvy and clever enough to offer value for money, new ideas and super(b) customer service.”

“The highlight of 2022 was the delight of being back face-to-face with customers and colleagues at events and shows. The BACI (Balloon Artist Convention Italy) event in Milan ran in March, after being postponed for two years and it was hugely successful and inspirational - so much creativity and joy.

“Being back at Spring Fair in January was amazing - it was great to see it so well supported by attendees and a great opportunity to get together with customers old and new.

“In terms of challenges, it was a year of many cost price increases, and supply chain issues, whilst improved, still continued to challenge at times.

“I am excited for 2023 and the host of new product launches Pioneer has planned out. We are also very much looking forward to being back at Spielwarenmesse.

“BACI returns to Milan in March - even bigger and better this time around - can’t wait to see the amazing creations in the sculpture competition. Excited also for the Qualatex Spring Tourwhere a number of Qualatex International Instructors will be offering inspirational training at a host of venues across Europe.

“However, the balloon industry has been grappling with lack of helium availability and associated increased costs, for some time - and I think this will continue into 2023. Pioneer is working to offer more and more air-filled options and inspiration across its product range / marketing and education assets, to help customers combat this.

“I expect upcoming changes in legislation affecting products and packaging- and the lack of harmonisation across Europe countries - will be a challenging area in 2023 and beyond.”

“The year 2022 was a very positive year for us, marked by steady growth. Firstly, we have maintained the quality of our products, our strongest pride, entirely made in Italy, investing in the equipment and raw materials despite the surrounding crisis.

“The year 2023 will be an important year, probably of changes, caused by the limitation of the use of helium for which we have equipped ourselves properly. We will present at Spring Fair our drop bases, a real base that allows most of our air balloons to be inflated and placed on this base becoming stand-up balloons. The stand-up line has also been greatly expanded in order to facilitate the inflation of air balloons while safeguarding the use of helium.

“Our goal is to continue in the year ahead to invest in quality as the first characteristic of our product. 2023 will also be a year of many new things, but for now we cannot reveal more than that, we can tell you that we look forward to sharing them with you.”

World Book Day – 2 March 2023 Toddler Costumes – Boys Costumes –Girls Costumes

Thursday 2 March will see classrooms around the UK celebrate World Book Day. Continuing to grow in popularity, the annual event sees children and teachers dressing up as their favourite literary characters, providing a key date for costume suppliers’ calendars. Progressive Party found out what their plans are for the 2023 event.

THE INSIDE

In 2022, World Book Day distributed 50 million of its £1/ € 1.50 tokens through schools, magazines and partnerships. In total, two million £1 books were gifted by booksellers and publishers to children around the UK, demonstrating how many children were reached by the event.

World Book Day’s mission is to see more children with a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure, and the improved life chances this will bring them. Again in 2023, every child will receive a voucher, entitling them to choose from a carefully curated selection of 12 titles for all abilities.

Part of encouraging a love of reading, World Book Day says, is making it fun. And that’s where dressing up comes in. Rubies is an avid supporter of the event and this year joins as a corporate partner. Mike O’Connell, managing director of Rubies, tells us: “With World Book Day right around

the corner, Rubies are preparing for a celebration like no other, as the proud official corporate partners.

“As the exclusive dress-up licensee to the charity, Rubies are working directly with them to ensure they promote the brand while also ensuring the joy and benefits of reading are focused on through dressing up. More schools and families are set to take part than ever before, so now is the right time to stock up as retailers, in order to be able to match this demand.”

Mike goes on to highlight some key focuses for 2023: “The main trends in dressing up this year will be a return to generic and family favourite book characters, whilst those looking for licensed costumes will likely turn to streaming platform favourites including the Mandalorian.”

Sergio Battaner at Palmer Agencies says there’s a missed opportunity for the event: “Book Day will be the spring highlight to many retailers and will provide a very welcome cash injection to many. While the trade is superb when offering children ideas, characters and costumes; we find teachers are very much forgotten about.”

Many suppliers are increasing their offering ahead of 2 March, as Sam Taylor, dress up category manager at Amscan, explains: “We are really excited for World Book Day 2023 as we have lots of fantastic new licences launching for the event, with Roald Dahl being our latest range to introduce, which includes costumes for all the family across all ages. Whether it is characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox or Matilda, we have it covered. Perfect for the nostalgic trend and full family dress up that is still so popular.”

Animals are also a key trend for Amscan. Sam continues: “There’s also classic Peter Rabbit and TV Peter Rabbit, which are lovely new additions to the range and add to our animal offering, as we see this as a key developing theme for the event. We’ve also added 100% recycled content Bluey and Bingo costumes to our portfolio, so extending our sustainable costume product range, which we are proud to continue to lead.”

Smiffys sees iconic figures making a splash for this year’s World Book Day. Dominique Peckett, director, furthers: “In terms of trends, this year, we are expecting careers and inspirational icons to be popular. As we see an increase in parents educating their children on cultural icons and inspirational characters at an early age, we think this will be reflected in the costumes we see this year for World Book Day.”

The economic climate may also impact what consumers are buying.

Dominique continues: “We have also seen an increase in demand for accessories as customers are utilising their own clothes for costume, elevated with key accessories. This season remains a key date for us at Smiffys and we are looking forward to another successful World Book Day.”

It’s a big year for Disney as it celebrates its 100th anniversary, and Disguise is on board to ensure the characters are included in the World Book Day celebrations. Tony Lewis, sales director at Disguise, comments:

Below: Smiffys expects different career and inspirational icon costumes to be popular this World Book Day.

“We are thrilled to be able to launch our first Disney collection for World Book Day in the 100th anniversary year, which has something for all ages, from preschool to teachers. Our range of amazing costumes includes literary classics such as Alice in Wonderland and Mary Poppins, as well as the much-loved Disney Princesses, and preschool icons such as Pooh & Friends.

“Although not a traditional book character, following the success of the hugely popular Sonic the Movie franchise, 2023 will see the hotly anticipated Sonic Prime collection. We are proud to be part of the event to promote the love of reading and hope our costumes spark imagination in the classroom and beyond.”

Karnival Costumes’ Stuart Goodman sees classic titles as continuing to be hot properties for this year, too: “Karnival Costumes is very excited to announce that our UK distributor Wicked Nights will be stocking a key range of Book Week costumes for 2023.

“We see the trend as still being classic costumes such as Alice, Dorothy, Harry, Willy, but there will always be new costumes and books that children like, so we will be working hard behind the scenes to make sure that Wicked Nights can become the destination where you can buy a fantastic range of Book Week costumes.”

With so many characters on offer for children to dress up as for World Book Day, this year’s event is sure to be a happy ending for party retailers.

RETURN TO NUREMBERG

2020 was the last time the party industry boarded a plane to head to Nuremberg for one of the biggest shows of the year. Spielwarenmesse’s absence has been felt across the board, and party suppliers are eager to get back to the show floor,

meet customers face-to-face and put physical product into the hands of visitors to the stand.

Michelle Comerford, head of sales at Pioneer Europe, explains: “We are really excited to be returning to the Toy Fair after two years out. It will be great

to see all of our customers all together in a show environment, particularly as we have lots of new and exciting products to share.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to see new products in the flesh, to discuss plans and be inspired by new designs/techniques with our on-stand demonstrations. Everyone we speak with is excited at the prospect of getting together again at this key event for the industry.”

Jonathan Grassi, vice president of Grabo Balloons, agrees: “Going back to the fair in Nuremberg after these difficult years brings with it great excitement and expectations. We are enthusiastic about spending five days in such an inspiring environment, meeting new and existing customers in a colourful and lighthearted atmosphere, surrounded by our fantastic balloons.”

Jürgen Müller, commercial director EU, Amscan, adds: “Amscan Europe is excited to return to Nuremberg Toy Fair in 2023 and present tons of newness on 350 square metres.”

For many, Spielwarenmesse offers an opportunity to expand their presence in Europe. Tony Lewis, director of sales and marketing, EMEA, at Disguise says: “The Toy Fair in Nuremberg is always one of the best shows of the year to present new product and to connect with our customers face-to-face across EMEA. Both manufacturers and retailers are excited to meet in Germany after the two-year break.

“2023 is even more important to us as it is the first opportunity we’ve had to present our extensive costume ranges ‘en-masse’ due to Covid restrictions so we already have meetings booked in with our distribution and retail network, plus will be delighted to welcome new connections to our booth.”

Dominique Peckett, director, Smiffys, continues: “After two years without the biggest Toy Fair in Europe, we can’t wait to return to Nuremberg for Spielwarenmesse. The show has always been one of the biggest dates in the trade calendar for us at Smiffys, and we have high hopes for the return of the show and getting back to meeting European customers face-to-face.”

For Rubies, the show is such a key part of its calendar, that it combines a permanent stand with another booth. Mike O’Connell, managing director, expands: “Combining our permanent 365 international stand with our party booth within Nuremberg Toy Fair, Rubies breadth of licences includes all the industry’s biggest and more. You can get exclusive previews to a wide range of product at Spielwarenmesse exclusively

from Rubies.

“You’ll find our team of experts on both stands who can answer all your questions regarding the new product launches for 2023, as well as providing tips and insight into sales and forecasting.”

As for what to expect on the party stands, there is a huge influx of newness and innovation. Gloria Veta, global brand director at Gemar, comments: “We have secured a larger space and we look forward to fostering new relationships within the party industry and to present our cutting-edge digital resource Gemar Creator, as well as our newest products and trends for the year.”

For Disguise, licensed costumes are the focus. Tony explains: “A specific focus should be made on Super Mario, Transformers Movie and the next Disney Christmas movie. It will also be a good occasion to show our fantastic Disney 100th anniversary dresses and our amazing Funko Pop! masks collection.”

New licences will also be found on Smiffys’ stand, as Dominique outlines: “Our stand will be packed full of exciting new lines we’ve been working on since the last show in 2020. Smiffys has recently launched exciting new licensed collections including True and the Rainbow Kingdom, Gigantosaurus and top global toy brand L.O.L Surprise. We can’t wait to unveil our newest additions to the lineup at the show.

“It will also be a chance to have a sneak peak at our tasty new licences: Pringles, Kellogg’s and Pepperami. As a distributor for Disguise, we will be showcasing a number of key licences from the brand’s portfolio.

“Dress up isn’t just for kids, and we will be debuting an iconic collection of adult licences, soon-to-be revealed. Visit our stand to be the first to view the character line-up. Not forgetting our core brands Smiffys and Fever, we will also be showcasing the latest additions to the everyday, festival, Halloween and Book Day collections.”

Grabo Balloons will be making an impact: “The stand this year will be all Italian; there will be no shortage of colours, smiles and great food,” Jonathan enthuses. “In addition there will be many new surprises that we can’t wait to show you, but we can’t say more.”

There will be licences and theatre on the Amscan booth: “For children’s birthdays, there will be an exciting variety of new licensed party ranges on display. Bluey, the breakout hit in the UK, which is gearing up for growth in the rest of Europe, is the latest addition to the assortment. The successful licences, Barbie, Pokémon, Super Mario, and Miraculous have received a new, fresh design.

“Amscan’s very own balloon artist Hans-Peter Bulant will present new trend colours, show different techniques for the multitude of shapes and finishes and introduce the best inflation equipment for each balloon,” Jürgen says. “Visitors will benefit from exclusive fair promotions for retailers and distributors. Discounts will be available for a specially prepared selection of products.”

SPRING

FEVER

Show season is almost upon us, and the party industry is poised and ready to head to the NEC, Birmingham, from 5 to 8 February, 2023, for Spring Fair. Progressive Party caught up with some of the key party exhibitors to find out what they have in store for the multicategory show.

With Covid restrictions well and truly a thing of the past, suppliers are keen to return to face-to-face shows this year, and many are expecting good things from Spring Fair. Lisa Norris, commercial director, UK at Amscan, explains: “We certainly expect Spring Fair to be back in full swing with plenty of visitors being in attendance, including international visitors who may have been put off attending due to Covid in recent years.

“Amscan are super excited to be back at Spring Fair 2023 after the long break due to the pandemic which prevented us from attending. We’re all really looking forward to seeing familiar faces as well as lots of new ones.”

Gloria Veta, global brand

director at Gemar, adds: “We look forward to creating new relationships within the party industry and to present our latest cutting-edge digital resource Gemar Creator, as well as our newest products and trends for the year. Each expo is unique and worthwhile, it’s the place where new ideas are waiting to be discovered and where relationships are forged.”

Grabo has big plans for its stand décor. Jonathan Grassi, vice president,

comments: “Spring Fair is always a wonderful opportunity to meet our clients and all those who visit us from the UK. It is a special occasion for us to spend time together and to talk about the future by presenting new projects and ideas, this year with an extra boost.

“All this is made more beautiful by Paula’s displays, our Grabo ambassador, who spent months beforehand preparing the setup for our stand. We are really excited to participate.”

Due to the economic climate, the coming year for retail is less certain, but suppliers are hopeful that the strength of the market will be on their side.

Mark Brett, agent for ITI UK, expands: “What to expect is a difficult call. It is going to be a tough year, but the good operators, both online and bricks and mortar, should do well. Whatever the economic outlook, there is a lot of business to be had out there, especially with dark clouds of Covid not looming too strongly.

“The balloon market is still very

Pioneer also has part of its stand earmarked for learning purposes.
