Wow, ten years. Yes, we feel old now too. The PPS Awards, as it is affectionally known, was launched shortly after the trade publication – Progressive Preschool – was ﬁrst published. As a business we wanted to work in the kids product space, as several of the team had long history there. But we also wanted to be different, and having consulted with our retail contacts were told that what was missing was a set of media that looked at the entire kids space, not just toy, or nursery, or apparel – in isolation.

ids are not focused on one thing. What’s hot in toys they also want adorned on their t-shirts and school bags. The brands that parents trust when their babies are tiny stay with them for many years. And so that was the point of ‘PPS’, a case of ‘what if we talked about all of it, in the same place?’ The PPS Awards are a live, in-person version of the same. In that awards room over the years deals have taken place by connecting the wider industry, not working in a myopic fashion. Team PPS recalls receiving some nice ﬁzz and a note saying: “So glad we came along, we met the Disney Baby team and have now inked a deal.” How great is that? This stuff doesn’t happen just because of us though. Sure, Max Publishing is Right: The multipretty well known for talented Charlie Baker is the host throwing a party. But the for this year’s awards. bit before that – the Today’s host is the one and only Charlie Baker. He calls himself: "A stand-up comic, singer, actor, voice over, presenter and Torquay United fan." Some say he is also a stunt-double for Rob Willis. (Rob wishes).

ARRIVING AT THE WINNERS We take a look behind the scenes at the entry and judging process for the PPS Awards 2022.

he PPS team were once again blown away by the volume and quality of the entries across all award categories. It is evident that brands and suppliers remained committed to new product development over the past year, despite all the challenges which everyone has been working through. Equally, retailers – both the majors and the independent sector – continued to work tirelessly on their offer for consumers, doing everything in their power to ensure it wasn’t compromised in any way due to shipping issues and stock levels. Plus, the return of the Retail Initiative category after a two year

absence due to the pandemic, was heartily welcomed – highlighting some truly innovative campaigns which helped to drive footfall and raise brand awareness across the board. The online judging portal opened in the spring and the industry once again didn’t disappoint, entering in their droves and giving our judging panels a mighty task to arrive at the winners. While the product category judging remained online due to the sheer scope and convenience it offered to retailers in being able to allocate their time, the in-person panels for retail and marketing made a triumphant return.

THE PRODUCT AWARDS This year’s prestigious Product categories were highly anticipated, with eight ﬁnalists lining up for each of the 12 accolades, underlining the wealth of top products in the market across the board and the strong number of entries received through the awards online portal. This year sees the introduction of a special Eco Award, while there are also now accolades for both licensed and non-licensed toys, plus wheeled goods and car seats. “We really have been blown away with the quality and volume of entries we had this year for the PPS Awards; it really has been exceptional,” commented Jo Pilcher, publication and event manager for Progressive

Preschool. “While there are undeniably issues facing the overall business due to the cost of living crisis, the preschool sector is nothing if not resourceful and resilient.” The criteria for the product categories remained the same as in previous years, with all entries required to be new to market or signiﬁcantly updated in the last calendar year (1 July 2021 to 1 July 2022), already in retail, with entries either being a single product or a range with up to ﬁve products. The online judging portal opened in the summer, with the team welcoming a strong number of buyers from a wide spectrum of retailers to judge the products entered.

THE RETAIL AWARDS Retailers are at the fore of the fast-moving, everchanging preschool sector and they must be recognised at every level. Retailers were nominated from all over the UK in the months leading up to the judging (where verification was made to ensure the retailer was in good standing), and consisted of both self-nomination plus high levels of nominations from suppliers, reps and agents. The finalists reflect the cross-category focus of the Progressive Preschool Awards, spanning a broad selection of retailers which have made their mark within the preschool aged industry over the past year. “We yet again received a record number of nominations this year, with each and every one of those nominations showing a real passion for independent high street retailing – going above and beyond to service their customers,” commented Jo.

The marketing award highlights the campaigns which have made an impressive impact upon the preschool product and retail sector over the past 12 months. This year’s six ﬁnalists were arrived at by a group of marketing experts, chaired by Richard Pink, md of Pink Key Licensing. He was joined by Paul Godwin (PCG Consultants), Amber Steventon (Azaria PR), Katie Rollings (Hasbro), James Marsh (B3 Creative) and Adeline St John (The Media Snug). “As always there were a variety of marketing disciplines at play across the various entries – the panel were impressed with the creativity and targeting for many of the campaigns and there was the inevitable discussion of how well the results stacked up against the various available budgets for the campaigns,” commented Richard.
