National Calendar Awards

Parting Of The Ways

New Diary Category

TV journalist and broadcaster Eamonn Holmes will be this year's keynote speaker at the National Calendar Awards (NCA), which attracted almost 400 entries and will be taking place at London's Stationer's Hall on January 27. "We received another strong entry level this year, with the standard and quality particularly high," said Daniel Prince, operations director at Danilo, and a key part of the NCA organising committee. "Diaries were a new category and we saw a good number of entries and new publishers." This year, judges included Calendar Club's Rob Dand and Christie Stapleton; industry professional Eddie Deacon; Dave Jones of Premier Beswick; photography expert Vanessa Kramer; David McGuiness from Kodak; Becky Chilcott from the Wynkyn de Worde Society; stationer Annie Hotton and Symon Machin, a calendar designer at Danilo. Additionally, among the newcomers to the judging panel this year was Christopher LeonardMorgan, the founder of the London Stationery Show, which sponsored the new Diaries category in the Desk and Personal Use section. “Dated products continue to perform remarkably strongly in the digital age and many of the Stationery Show’s exhibitors such as Collins, Flame Tree, Portico Designs, Castelli, Busy B, Museums & Galleries, Pyramid, Thames and Hudson, Moleskine, Tallon and Toad Diaries were eligible to enter for these awards," said Chris. “Entering products for awards is a fantastic way to put them in front of a very influential group of people in the industry, something we also promote with our Stationery Awards.” The 2016 London Stationery Show will take place on April 26-27 at the Business Design Centre during National Stationery Week (April 25 - May 1). World Stationery Day is on April 27.

Cliff Still A 'Young One' The Daily Mail was among the national newspapers to give significant coverage to the 2016 official Cliff Richard calendar, helping to kickstart calendar buying at the end of the summer. Contrary to the myth that the 2015 version was Sir Cliff’s last one, the 2016 calendar, published by Danilo, shows the singer, now 75, looking as young and fit as ever. Poses include Cliff sitting on a cannon wearing a Union Jack T shirt and shorts, looking charged up on a threewheeled motorcycle and in a relaxed mood on board a motor yacht. The images were taken in Barbados where the pop singer lives. Cliff's first official calendar for Danilo was launched 37 years ago, with over 1.5m calendars sold to date.

Carousel Calendars Adds To Its Licensed Portfolio Licensing deals are continuing to benefit both Carousel Calendars and their partners, with sales revenue increasing year-on-year, up 11.5% on 2013. Over the last three years, the number of licensing agreements the company holds has increased by 22%. In 2017, Carousel Calendars will have 95 licensing agreements in place. Over 50 new titles have been added to Carousel Calendars’ 2017 range, including some newly licensed products. Brands include Beryl Cook, RSPCA, Marmite, Royal Horticultural Society and Tottering By. On the export front, last year's sales were expanded into North America by publishing calendar gift envelopes for the USA and Canadian markets. The company has also significantly increased the number of titles sold into Australia, with products that included a new title called Australian Cricket Legends. ● Carousel Calendars will be exhibiting at Spring Fair in Hall 3, Stand R31. Progressive Calendars is published by Max Publishing Ltd, publisher of Progressive Greetings Worldwide. It is distributed with the February edition of Progressive Greetings Worldwide.

Giving its calendars and stationery its own identity and focus, teNeues Publishing has separated from the books side of the business. The Calendar and Stationery division now operates as teNeues Calendars & Stationery GmbH & Co. KG., as a company of Dr Neumann-Wolff AG. Sebastian teNeues remains the publisher and managing director of the company. Axel Klug, chairman of Dr Neumann-Wolff AG, has assumed the position of managing director.

Advent Growth

Having acquired Caltime two years ago, Woodmansterne Publications will be making dramatic changes to its Advent calendar range in 2016, which has been finely tuned and re-balanced to focus on the growing potential of the Advent market and to meet consumer and retailers’ needs. Offering 13 new formats, and covering retail price points from £3.99 to £12.99, the new range includes classic Advent images, religious and specially commissioned pieces. In addition to the traditional flat paper Advents, for which Caltime is well-known, there are now new 'added value' 3D Advents, as well as two new sticker Advent calendars and a limited edition 3D Christmas tree, which will all be launched at Spring Fair at the NEC in Birmingham in February. Artist New Signings Portico's calendar portfolio of art and design-led brands has expanded. This year, the company will be adding to its Caroline Gardner range with a new look for Sincerely Yours (humorous), Ditsy (Floral) and a new theme that is core to the Caroline Gardner brand Hearts. "We are also expanding the All Around the Table collection, launched last year, as this range performed really well," confirms Portico's creative director Carmen Long. Additionally, the company will also be launching two new collections licensed from card publishers The Art File, featuring designs from both its Ink Press and Call Me Frank card collections (square, slim and desk calendars, A6 and slim diaries will be available). Portico is also now working with London-based artist Paul Thurby, licensing his work for dated products, featuring illustrations from his new book L is for London (square and desk calendars and A6 diary formats will be available). Portico will also be working with painter Carolyn Carter, local to Bath. "Her beautiful images of birds and flowers have broad appeal that will reach across all types of retailers from booksellers and independents to garden centres," says Carmen. (Square and slim calendars and A6 and slim diaries will be available).

● Laurence Prince, founder, owner and chairman of Danilo, received the Honorary Achievement Award at the Licensing Awards held at London's Grosvenor House in September. New Direction For 2017 Pomegranate Europe has augmented its successful 2017 calendar range with a variety of new artists and new themes. The company will be taking a fresh direction, revisiting its roots, particular to the calendar sector. Titles will feature everything from dragons and gnomes to natural spirituality, as well as art and beauty within the animal kingdom, and maps, mandalas and Monet. British artists include Brian Sweet and Sir Claude Francis Berry. "We’re expanding the range in numerous directions for 2017, including spiritual and natural art from Thierry Bisch and Irene Hardwicke Olivieri, as well as an exciting new focus on mathematical art such as tessalations and fractals, featuring the work of Doug Harrington and Makoto Nakamura," states marketing manager Daniel Rabot. Right: Among Pomegranate Europe's new artists is Sir Claude Francis Berry.

Bee-utiful Bees Tie-ing in with the trend for bees, Buglife launched a 2016 Bee-utiful Bees calendar buzzing with close-up photos of bees on flowers alongside interesting facts and illustrations. All profits of sales will go to help Buglife the only charity in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates - continue its work to protect and save our native bees. “Bees are essential to life as we know it," says Paul Hetherington, director of fundraising and communications at Buglife. "Every 50p raised can buy seed to sow an extra square metre of wildflower meadow.” Above: Buglife's Bee-utiful calendar.

Buying Patterns

BrownTrout Reveals Research Findings Research undertaken by BrownTrout, both in the UK and in the USA, reveals a clear, predictable pattern of when different formats sell and in which months. According to the findings, family planners and organisers sell between July and October; wall calendars start selling in September and continue steadily through December, and day-to-day calendars are more gift-oriented and sell strongly in November and December. The percentages of retail sales per month, according to BrownTrout are as follows: ● July 1% ● August 2% ● September 4% ● October 5% ● November 13% ● December 58% ● January 15% Right: Luv Pugs, among the new titles from ● February 2% BrownTrout. "You will note the importance of remaining out on sale in January going into February," comments Jack Straw, managing director of BrownTrout. "It's also vital to be in stock of the best titles in December if you are going to maximise the sales."

Helping Heroes Carousel Calendars’ 2015 dated calendars and diaries raised a total of £56,677 for the charity Help For Heroes, raising a total of £238,954 over the past five years. Instead of a pure royalty rate based on net receipts, the company applies a donation of £2 from every planner, wall calendar and diary sold, and £1 from every slim calendar sold. A total of 36,851 units were sold across all formats. The best-selling title in the 2015 dated collection was the slim calendar, which, by itself raised £17,025.

calendars into the company's offer. Titles to be included are a mix of art and humour: Lily & Val, Stitchin, Paul Thurby, Lovesick by Jessie Cave, Knit and Purl, Call Me Frank, Elizabeth Olwen and Stitchin.

INDUSTRY ISSUE

Still Buying, But Buying Differently As another year unfolds for the calendar industry, Progressive Calendars takes a look at some of the key issues that calendar publishers are facing.

A

lthough it was another strong year for teNeues' dated range, the company highlights that buying habits are changing, with sales starting later in the year. "This will continue well into 2016 if 2015 is an accurate measure," says Claire Trigger, teNeues' sales and marketing manager UK. "New customers are coming from both online sales and also sideline markets such as women’s clothing boutiques." Adds Claire: "The independent retailers continue to be strong sellers, with more requesting spinners and desktop presentation units as they dedicate more space to display the ranges." At Pomegranate Europe, marketing manager Daniel Rabot says it’s been an unsettling year. "We’ve seen consistent order numbers, but a slight reduction in average order size indicating that retailers are struggling to justify the big commitments of previous

January to December format, says it has noticed a growing trend over the past few years for customers wanting to purchase calendars earlier in the season. "To meet customer demand and to increase the selling period of our dated products, in 2017 we will be bringing forward the launch date of our calendars from June to March," confirms managing director Sarah Sadler. While many retailers are pulling out the stops in their calendar displays and selections, the online option is contributing to changing buying habits. As Jack Straw, managing director of BrownTrout says, there is no doubt that the growth in internet shopping - and Amazon in particular - is having a detrimental effect on the ‘bricks and mortar’ sales in the calendar sector. "I see no slowdown in this shift from one to the other," states Jack. "Calendars

Above: Among Portico's range of family planners. Below left: teNeues' is seeing a later buying pattern.

work really well being sold on the internet and the wider your range, and the more diverse the interests that you cater for - the more successful you can be." Carmen Long, creative director at Portico though points out that despite the technological advancements, tangibility is key. She cites family organiser calendars that are continuing to do well for the company, even with mobile phone and calendar app technology. "For co-ordinating family member’s schedules, a central place for everyone’s reminders is still essential in the home," she states.

Price Matters

years. However, encouragingly, we received a steady stream of re-orders late in the season. In addition, our product range is now in all types of store no matter how big, small, niche or mainstream," confirms Daniel. "We enjoy thinking outside the box and finding the more quirky customers, and it’s this mind-set that has allowed us to find success in the new trendy, European style interior design stores that are appearing across the country." Conversely, Boxhouse, whose products cross over the academic and traditional

As always, the issue of price remains a divider of opinion. "Increasingly, we will continue to see more titles and formats breaching the £9.99 glass ceiling," states BrownTrout's managing director Jack Straw. "We are already seeing many of the ‘imported’ titles from both Germany and the USA at £10.99. As licences become more expensive to acquire, this will inevitably push retail price upwards and is doing so." Continues Jack: "There does exist a large ‘deep discount’ market for calendars in the UK, in the same way that there is for greeting cards for example. But it is interesting to note that this year we will be offering a special edition Thomas Kinkade calendar that will also include a remarkable fine art print that captures the essence of the original painting through a technique that interprets and creates textured brushstrokes on a painting. This calendar ‘package’ will retail for £24.99." Carousel Calendars meanwhile, will be introducing more formats for the over-£10 price point for the company's 2016 ranges and now has Above: BrownTrout's Thomas Kinkade calendar will retail for £24.99. seven formats at £10.99, selling over 150,000 units. teNeues meanwhile, will be continuing to hold the £9.99 mark for its grid calendars and family planners. "There are no plans to move away from this," confirms sales and marketing manager UK Claire Trigger. At Portico, creative director Carmen Long says the company's core customer base has generally maintained its pricing, without the need to discount dated product, "although at peak sales times, seasonal offers may form part of a multiple retailers strategy with multi-buys," adds Carmen. Adding new formats will continue to challenge the consumer’s preconception on pricing. Daniel Prince, operations director at Danilo, for example, reveals that the company trialled a premium range of diaries and will possibly be adding to it in 2016. "We're always looking at new formats for specific retailers so that they can serve their customers’ needs," he comments. PROGRESSIVE CALENDARS 2016

RETAIL DETAIL

Charting Success Despite the increased use of mobile phones and tablets, calendars continued to be a hit for retailers in 2015. Progressive Calendars caught up with Calendar Club's Glenn McWhinney and a calendar retailing duo for the lowdown. "2015 was the year that finally saw One Direction toppled from the top spot in the calendar sales charts!" reveals Calendar Club UK's online marketing manager Glenn McWhinney about sales from the calendar specialist. "One Direction ended up in fourth place, with Manchester United (3rd), Banksy (2nd) and Justin Bieber (1st)." Glenn highlights that following Justin Bieber's reinvention, a cracking new calendar took the country by storm. "His sales were way out in the lead compared to the next best seller, Banksy, but the calendar only really skyrocketed in popularity once Justin Bieber managed to steal the top two songs in the official charts as reported by Radio 1. Meanwhile, the Banksy brand managed to secure three of the Top 20 products, with the wall format (in 2nd place) favoured by the

Sales Growing

"The Organised Mum range of family/work/life calendars, diaries and journals from Boxhouse sell very well for us and, over the past couple of years, we have we seen growth in this area," confirms Michelle Ellingham, owner of Box Of Delights in Flitwick. "We stock a wide range of nostalgic and traditional Advent calendars and Advent cards too, due to demand from customers who prefer these to the chocolate variety, with our main suppliers being Tizaro, Caltime by Woodmansterne, Rachel Ellen, Cardmix, Sally Swannell and Caroline Gardner. "The sale of conventional calendars and diaries however, have sadly declined over the last few years, possibly due to the pop up shops that appear up to Christmas, and of course, iPhones and iPads," comments Michelle. "Also many people now order personalised photographic calendars online."

public above the slim (6th) and the easel (12th). "Combined, Banksy comprised 17% of total sales in the Top 20," confirms Glenn. Justin Bieber comprised 9% of total sales in the Top 20, as did the two Minions products - the wall and the slim calendars - when combined. The Minions slim calendar was the only slim in the Top 20 and proved more popular than its wall counterpart. As for the Star Wars Episode VII calendar, despite all the hype surrounding the film, it didn't quite make Calendar Club's Top 20. "We expected the official Star Wars wall calendar to be popular before Christmas and it was," comments Glenn, "although it did flounder slightly at position 23. Having said that, we did have 17 Star Wars branded products available to the fans this year - from mugs to diaries - which all sold well." While female celebrity calendars performed well - "we had some very high quality calendars this year with the likes of Kylie - a perennial favourite - Kelly Brook and Little Mix, it seems that the male celebrity

calendars out performed them. "High sales were achieved for Elvis Presley (9th), Cliff Richard (12th), Olly Murs (14th), 5 Seconds Of Summer, Tom Hardy and Robbie Williams," Glenn confirms. Online, CalendarClub.co.uk enjoyed swathes of early season sales with a few titles that were not present in the stores: Pete Wicks (TOWIE), Gleb Savchenko (Strictly Come Dancing), and Jorgie Porter (I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here). "As their popularity soared, we made sure that some stock was sent to as many stores as possible and that those store customers could especially order their copy if one wasn’t in stock," Glenn explains. "However, supply could not keep up with demand and these titles are now gold dust!"

Transatlantic Success

Lucy Sticka, owner of Little Paperie in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, stocks two luxurious US calendar brands - Kate Spade and the Rifle Paper Co. "In 2015, Anna Bond illustrated an Alice in Wonderland book for Puffin to celebrate the book's 150th anniversary, with the illustrations featured in a limited edition 2016 square wall calendar which was a big sellers for us," confirms Lucy. "We also did extremely well with Kate Spade's desk top calendar. I think people were buying them as a gift, rather than for themselves," she comments. "We also had a few high-end hanging Advents, which I think I'll stock more of next year, as well as a perpetual calendar which we had a lot of requests for. We were also frequently asked for wall planners, so this year, we will be looking to stock them and to possibly launch our own line."

ADVENT CALENDARS

It’s Beginning To Feel A Lot Like Christmas Advent calendars continue to be a 'countdown to Christmas' - a reminder to both retailers and consumers - that Christmas is on its way! From religious themes to the more traditional snowmen and Santas, and from licensed product to sophisticated art, there's a huge choice for both children and adults who like to peek behind the windows while counting the days off to December 25!

A

dvents have come a long way since the early days. While chocolates behind the windows continue to delight children of all ages, there's also a frisson of excitement about opening an Advent calendar window and finding something different. "Social media has been full of tweets about the excitement of novelty Advent calendars, and although a new nail varnish or candle for example is fun, the traditional paper Advent calendar is still as popular as ever," says Sarah La Plain, general manager of Caltime by Woodmansterne. "In fact, consumers appear to value the season even more, with the tradition of opening of nonchocolate Advent calendars listed as the 10th most important activity in a traditional family Christmas, ranking above Christmas cake, mince pies and letters to Santa!" Continues Sarah: "Woodmansterne has also seen this reflected in the demand from customers for traditional designs on Christmas cards. The media recently reported that half the UK population now

identify themselves as non-religious, but Woodmansterne has not seen any decline in the demand for religious Advents." At Carousel Calendars, sales of Advent calendars feature five diverse titles that include unique designs by popular artists, as well as the more traditional Christmas scenes to give a broader selection. "The best-selling title proved to be the Matthew Rice design calendars," confirms managing director Steve Plackett. “The unusual and attractive designs from Matthew Rice really stand out, with Christmas scenes behind the windows featuring a mix of images, all hand-painted, including animals, such as a cat and a pheasant, the nativity, three wise men, a Christmas tree and a wreath." Flame Tree's md Frances Bodiam confirms that the company's Advent range is growing each year, becoming more successful with each addition to the range. There is a collection of 20 Advents for Christmas 2016, ranging from Erte and Ivory Cats to traditional Snowy Santa and Christmas Fairies, with new designs including best sellers Moomins and Paddington Bear. "Advents are a great addition to any retail offer," comments Frances. "The booksellers and independent gift stores did especially well with them in 2015, particularly our Paddington and Diary of a Country Lady Advents." Top right: Carousel Calendar's best selling Matthew Rice Mr Barn Advent. Above left: Santa’s House Grand Advent Calendar from Caltime by Woodmansterne. Above right: Art Angels' Winter Woodland, an Advent calendar by Angela Harding for Art Angels. Left: Flame Tree's Mister Snowman Advent.

There's a sticker behind each window in all the company's Advents - apart from the adult Erte designs - which can be peeled off to make Christmas decorations, to decorate present wrapping or used to create a Christmas scene. "We feel this is much more creative and longer lasting than chocolate," says Frances. In addition, "they also have a beautiful red ribbon threaded through them so that they can be hung up from the fireplace or somewhere else in the home for everyone to see," Frances points out.

Publisher Art Angels produced a small range of Advent calendars in 2015, with Winter Wonderland by artist Angela Harding doing particularly well for the company. The windows, when opened, revealed woodland creatures and completed the picture, " explained managing director Chris Cordingly. "Angela Harding is a very popular artist and her linocut print images translate well onto cards. We commissioned this artwork specifically for the Advent calendar and will be adding new artists to the section for 2016." Advents continue to be as innovative as ever, delighting recipients of all ages, who simply can't wait to open the first window on December 1! PROGRESSIVE CALENDARS 2016

The other, illustrated by Briony May Smith, shows a busy Christmas market scene with happy children playing in the snow and ice-skating. The header is packed with a large white mailing envelope. These Advents will look striking decorating stores or homes in the run up to Christmas. They will complement the already successful Milan Cathedral and Shopping Scene.
