Welcome to the Party Happy New Year to you all. No, you’re quite right, it’s basically February now and we’re already starting to think about Halloween. Time and tide wait for no man, but that said, the start of the year is always a particularly fun time to be in the party trade. It’s a small lull in operation, giving us time to take stock - quite literally - and look at how the seasons fall for the year ahead. With party, it’s an easy one to call. We get plenty of notice when the Royal Family are planning a gig, and we know that Halloween will probably be with us sometime towards the end of October. We’re faring very well, though, as the results Inset: Progressive Party Europe’s Rob Willis and Jacqui Parr. of the 2015 Retail Barometer testify (take a look for yourself, on page 17 onwards). This is an industry-wide survey, which we commission each year in order to look at the growth and decline within the market, and to provide a detailed statistical analysis of trends forming. It really is compelling, essential reading. For retailers, it’s a chance to see how to get money in the till, and for suppliers it’s an opportunity to ensure 2016 product ranges fall in line with consumer demand. We thank each and every one of you who took part - we appreciate it takes time, but hope you’ll agree that this sort of data is imperative - especially with this year’s results showing a real positive party. One of the key performance indicators is that the supermarkets are now classed as a known threat, with the majority of respondents saying they are ‘used to them’ and have adapted their own business accordingly. We truly are a niche market-place that has a healthy independent retail trade value. You must believe that - after all, you can’t sell something you don’t believe in. As we move through the gears (and other motivational sayings), we must now turn our attention to the exhibitions that brighten up our diaries throughout January and February. The most notable for UK party retailers is Spring Fair, taking place at the NEC in February. While it’s not quite a total reflection of the party supply market, it’s the most comprehensive trade show we have and there are still a good number of exhibitors to visit. It’s certainly worth spending an hour or two in the car for. It’s a behemoth of a show, but it’s actually a pretty easy one to get to, park up, and get in. Further afield, Toy Fair in Nuremberg (Spielwarenmesse if you will) will host the world’s largest toy exhibition - which, fortunately, includes an entire hall (Hall 9, if you’re making the trip) dedicated to party and carnival product. While not quite as easy to drive to, and definitely requiring an extra layer or two, the once purely European show now hosts party trade exhibitors from across the continent - including a good number of UK brands. While on route to either, we hope you enjoy the contents of this issue. In addition to the survey and show previews, we have two great sector focuses on both book week and the mini-seasons which brighten up the first few months of the year. An in-depth interview from PPE’s trip to Belbal’s headquarters in Poland reveals all about the balloon experts’ European takeover. There’s plenty of new product as well, with pages dedicated to new lines from licensing, generic and European markets - plus our best sellers feature ensures you keep a tab on how well green wigs are faring. There’s a lot to get involved with. Our very best wishes for a profitable and prosperous 2016.

NEWS UPDATE The Retail Report
The new year is traditionally a time to look back and take stock over the last 12 months; to see what was a success, what could be improved upon and what it might be better to try and forget. With that in mind, Progressive Party Europe can now reveal results of the annual Party Retail Barometer, an exclusive end-ofyear report, commissioned by PPE for the last six years.
Retail was undoubtedly tough throughout 2015, so it's reassuring to see that most independent party retailers (88%) reported that their sales had either grown or remained the same over the last year. It also seems that independent retailers are finally beginning to benefit from the development
Lovely Bubbly! Congratulations to Gary Wakefield of Lili Bizarre in Liverpool, who won a bottle of fine champagne delivered courtesy of Progressive Party Europe. A winner was drawn at random from the hundreds of retailers who took the time to complete our annual party industry survey. PPE would like to thank everyone who took part for your help – we (really!) couldn't do it without you.
A Man Of Many Faces Following the sad news that musician, actor, artists and allround legend David Bowie (69) passed away on January 10, party retailers should prepare themselves for party-goers looking to celebrate and pay tribute to a modern-day hero. With characters as diverse as Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, there's a wide range of looks available to choose from – but a good range of face paint is likely to prove essential. Below: Tributes to Bowie's genius are likely to be on the rise throughout 2016.
which has been taking place across many of Britain's high streets – local area growth was named as the factor to have the most positive effect on trade in the past year. It's clear that wellmaintained, attractive high streets and business parks will drive trade – and once customers are through the door, there's no going back!
Following on from the trend reflected in the previous year’s report, accessories once again outperformed costumes in terms of retailers best-selling product areas. Somewhat surprisingly, milestone birthdays are the most popular reason for balloon purchases, with the more traditional balloon occasions Valentine's Day and Mother's Day coming third and fifth, respectively. Thankfully, Halloween and Book Week provided two very welcome breaks, with a dramatic boost to business across the board. Most retailers – an incredible 81% – said Halloween had grown for them, with 70% seeing an increase in kids' literary outfits. Valentine's Day and the festival market were

Tough Trading For Christmas 2015 The unseasonally mild weather has been blamed for a tough Christmas 2015, as retail sales growth fell short of high expectations, with high street retailers including Next and M&S reporting disappointing sales as consumers left their shopping to the last minute, with many choosing to cut back on purchases overall. According to the CBI’s monthly Distributive Trades Survey, which covers the crucial run-up to Christmas, the volume of retail sales remained below retailers’ expectations despite picking up in December and finishing slightly above the average for the time of year. Barry Williams, CBI distributive trades chairman, said: “It’s no surprise sales recovered as we headed into the final shopping days
the only two categories to see no reports of growth at all. It's been an interesting year, with consumers willing to spend and retailers looking for ever more creative ways to help them do just that! Turn to page 17 for the full and complete results and analysis of Progressive Party Europe's 2015 Retail Barometer.
It's A Cracker!
The Party Show @ Spring Fair Next month's Spring Fair is an unmissable event for many party retailers, as the four-day event offers the perfect opportunity to see what's new within the fancy dress and party market. Taking place from 7 – 11 February, The Party Show in Hall 3 is dedicated to party and costume exhibitors, with everything from balloons to banners and fireworks to fancy dress. One of the highlights is the The Stage, which is returning for the fifth year after its successful launch in 2012. Based in the

of the Christmas season. It would be ideal if the industry could keep that momentum into the New Year but retailers know 2015 was tough, and they’re expecting 2016 to start in much the same vein.”
Party retailer Peeks expected to sell almost 3 million crackers over the 2015 festive season, following the acquisition of a rival business. Full details of the acquisition have not yet been revealed, but the company says the purchase makes it one of the market leaders. Last year, the Dorset party supply company sold just over 700,000 crackers. “The new deal almost trebles our cracker trade,” explained md Nick Peek. “Already we have several container loads ready for the Christmas orders that are coming in thick and fast. Below: Nick Peek, third generation md of Peeks.
High Streets Lose Out The festive break saw Britain’s high streets continue to lose out during the Christmas period, as footfall during the Christmas week fell by 3% year-on-year. By contrast, retail parks enjoyed a 3.6% rise and shopping centres experienced a 1.8% increase during the same period. The figures, released by retail data firm Springboard, are partly attributed to the wet weather.

It's Balloonacy! A social media prankster discovered the joke was on him after he was charged with criminal damage for popping a balloon arch. 'Hilarious' Shayan Shayegani, who has more than 90,0000 Facebook fans, was arrested after he posted a video of himself bursting the archway balloons at his university graduation party. The film - entitled 'When you fail uni and you're not welcomed to the graduation party' - shows the 22-year-old, also known as Speedo Shy, popping a £160 balloon arch placed around the entrance of the University of Huddersfield, West Yorks. Shayegani told police he had 'popped balloons' and was a 'balloon murderer'. The drama student at Huddersfield University pleaded guilty to criminal damage at Kirklees Magistrates Court. Shayegani was ordered to pay £160 compensation to the university and £150 court charges. Below: Prankster Shayan Shayegani was found guilty of criminal damage.

Ballooning Sales A Fleet-based balloon business is 'soaring' after featuring in a television documentary about the mega-wealthy. The owners of Bubblegum Balloons – Sally Hodge, her sister Laura Slater and best friend Megan Robertson – say they have seen a surge in sales, which are up by 120%. Bubblegum Balloons starred in the BBC2 documentary The Millionaire’s Gift Guide in the first week of January this year. In the one-hour programme Bubblegum Balloons was called in by high-end event planners to decorate an extravagant children’s Christmas party. The team created snow-topped feather-filled bubble balloons, giant floating balloons with tassels and twinkling lights in the tails, and a ceiling canopy of white and gold balloons using more than 1,000 balloons. “As one of the UK’s leading balloon and party Above: Laura Slater, Sally Hodge and pieces suppliers we’re used Megan Robertson of Bubblegum Balloons. to extravagant requests, but there’s no denying that this year we’ve seen a noticeable surge in sales, up by 120%, as people go all out to impress at parties and events,” said Sally. “With figures like this, it just goes to show that balloons have been 2015’s must-have party accessory.”

There will also be some informal competitions, designed especially to encourage newcomers. The categories (all Nirvana-themed!), are Novice, Junior, Open Hand and Glitter. “The jam will very relaxed and is open to everyone from newbies to award-winning pros,” said organiser Juliet Eve. “For those who have never attended before it can be quite daunting, but we are offering a buddy system, where a regular face painter can introduce new faces to the lovely folk within the painty world.” Taking part in the jam costs just £8 for adults and £5 for children – and each painter has a maximum of three guests. With more than half of the 100 available spaces already snapped up, interested parties should register their interest on the Facebook page as soon as possible.

Costume Class A Russian university professor was forced to eat his own words after challenging his students to dress up in fancy dress costumes to gain extra points on an exam. Engineering students at one of the universities in Ufa, southcentral Russia's Republic of Bashkortostan, turned up dressed in everything from sexy Santa outfits to Bugs Bunny costumes. The professor had said that students would get bonus points for turning up to the Mechanics of Materials exam in carnival costumes. What made the costume caper particularly baffling was that the professor is apparently well-known for having no sense of humour.

It is so inspiring to see our industry working together for such a great cause!” “The friendships and networking forged at this event are also fantastic,” he continued, “and we aim to continue to do this for many years to come. Thank you to everybody who took part.”

Training Day Ask any retailer the best way to grow their business and they'll all agree that for improving techniques and expanding their offering, training courses can't be beaten. However, according to the respondents to our 2015 PPE retail barometer (page 17) more than three-quarters of retailers (76%) have no intention of attending a course at all this year. Want to make sure you are one step ahead of the crowd? You know what to do. Whether for learning specific new skills – such as facepainting or twisting – or for improving on management style, training courses are an invaluable way of increasing knowledge. Here are a selection of some of the training programmes available for 2016. ■ QUALATEX In 2016 Qualatex will offer brand new courses Quick Links A to Z and Wedding Series 3, as well as its popular Fundamentals, Retail Essentials, Magical Party Designs and Twisting Made Easy, among others. Courses take place at a selection of venues across the UK. See www.thequalatexevent.com for costs, dates and latest information. ■ FACADE ACADEMY The face painting and body painting classes take place in Hertfordshire, although many people and organisations choose to arrange face painting instruction at their own venue – Facade and its instructors are always willing to travel! Retail Barometer 2015
A Positive Party
The findings of the just published Progressive Party Retail Barometer (which tracks the health and wealth of party retailers over 2015) set a scene of busy retail stores, innovative new product, and enough film and TV character trends to keep us going for a long while yet. Don’t mention it out loud, but business seems to be pretty good in party world…
O
ur sincere thanks to the busy retailers who took the time out of their day to share how they fared in 2015 with the wider market. By collecting and collating these thoughts and numbers, we can, as a sector, take a wide-lens view on how it is performing, where the trends lie, and how as a collective we can perform to our best ability in terms of product and retail. One thing’s for certain, those television programmes and characters which ring through the ears of tired parents, and the cult movie franchises that seem to be marketed to the hilt – they’re our new best friends. Sure, we can rely on quality product and the comforting fact that every year sees Christmas, and that we all have a birthday (whether we want one or not!) but without character merchandise and newer ‘commercial’ events, such as Book Week, we’d be specialists, but specialists with too many final demands stashed under the till. Star Wars, Minions, Frozen; these key drivers have maintained a healthy flow of adult and children’s party themes, the results of this survey testify to that. (And, you’d have to be pretty ‘indoorsy’ to have missed these phenomenons). Suppliers have invested tens of £millions into these franchises, giving even the tiniest of independent retailers a real opportunity to cash in while being a part of a Disney success. But our form has improved in other areas too, it’s not always sunny on TV. Retailers have reported a strong upturn in the quality and quantity of traditional party product too. From balloons to bunting and paper to props, more sturdy trading results have given suppliers the funds to invest in design and material, giving retailers more opportunity to maintain their key position as party specialists. Between these two key drivers, and the independent retail sector becoming more marketing savvy (that’s Twitter and Facebook for those who haven’t – and it’s totally free), it is pleasurable to see that the 2015 Retail Barometer bares good news in almost every area. Sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin…
Turning Over The Books How as business been for you, 2015 vs 2014? Steady as she goes – that’s the word from this year’s respondents. With a majority reporting either slight or significant growth in their trading, the party product sector and quality independent retailing appears to fall into the safe zone. In three years, we’ve seen this marker move from decline or stagnant, to slight growth, to significant growth.

How have supermarkets and discount stores affected your trade this year? When writing the questions to this survey, PPE added the opportunity to answer with ‘We’re used to it now’. That’s what retailers tell us, and it looks as though the massmarket agrees with the notion that supermarkets are a threat, but a quantifiable threat. 29%

Product Picks Taking categories as a whole, what have been your best-selling product areas throughout 2015? Accessories have, for the second year running, taken the number one spot from costumes, as an overall growth area in 2015 (compared to the year previous). Plenty of feedback suggests that it’s a growing area that we can expect to see new product from in 2016, with a growth in consumers ‘working up’ a costume from basic supplies.

Local area growth was reported as the top positive effect on trading in 2015. Increased house purchasing rates potentially endorse this in the suburbs, with more infrastructure and business development in major towns and cities potentially helping footfall. Coupling potential consumers with local advertising is clearly a win-win situation.

How have the following categories performed for your retail business?
The character business is a partner to us, and we must love it and absorb it. Lending itself particularly well to party product, it allows huge opportunity to offer consumers the up-to-date product, and to be seen as a go-to retailer for current popular culture product. Once again, in almost all party product areas, licensed product sees a majority share of sales at the till. More than one retailer reported costumes being 100% of their sales.
Falling in line with the seasonal trends, character merchandising opportunity, and lifestyle choices, the results for most corners are positive. Almost every line shows opportunity to trade well, with very few party and costume products not in demand in some way, shape or form. Kids Costumes: Increased: Remained the same: Decreased:

Suppliers have massively improved the information flow on the licensing front in the last year. Respondents to this year’s survey scored suppliers 6.8 out of 10 for information on licensed properties. When asked the same question for the 2014 Barometer retailers gave suppliers a rating of just 4.4 out of 10.

The Jester Says
Writing freely, from behind a magical cloak of confidentiality, The Jester draws on an entire lifetime of party experience to bring us controversial opinions, interesting viewpoints and all the latest industry gossip, fresh from the grapevine...
NO REST FOR THE
WICKED
“A
friend once said to me, “I bet it’s a nice time in January, if you own a party shop; you can put your feet up!” Well they couldn’t have been more wrong – I always think it’s one of the busiest times of year! I need time to review all the product ranges, price up my leading lines, revamp my website, trade shows – and in my spare time review my business plan for the following 12 months. The hardest task is reviewing the product ranges. While certain products never change, like solid colour balloons, plain paperware and Snazaroo tubs, I still have to decide who I should use to supply me with these products. I am a great believer in these two simple rules. One: Never keep your eggs in one basket, and Two: Reward loyalty! Rule one means that I always make sure that I spread my orders around, and at the last count we had over 50 different suppliers. This ensures not only a great variety of products for our customers, but also means that if any suppliers cease to trade or are unable to deliver a standard product I have other suppliers to fall back on. The second rule is simple; price is not everything! Stock availability, delivery and customer service is far more important. It is sometimes flattering for a supplier to offer you a discount and better payment terms – but this is only really useful if they can deliver the stock you require. This reminds me of when a customer comes in and asks the price of a product and I say £2 each. The customer points out that its only £1.50 down the road. I ask the customer
comes to the latest trends in licensed products it is always well worth keeping an eye on the latest film releases. It is obvious that 2016 is going to be overrun by Star Wars, but we must still be careful – don’t forget that the Phantom Menace was not all it was hyped up to be. For paperware or licenced mylar balloons we can easily drop an old licence to be replaced with a new licence. What we have to be careful with is residue stock; we have always had a dump bin for clearance items that have been left – that last pack of napkins that don’t match anything. You have to remember that this cash is tied up and needs to be released for new stock.
Above: Party retailers will be hoping that Star Wars keeps the tills ringing in the new year. Right: The Jester’s NEC survival kit – comfy shoes, water, rucksack (for catalogues), tablet for notes and lots of stamina!
politely why they did not buy it down the road, only to be told that they are out of stock. I say that’s funny, ours is only £1.50 when we are out of stock as well. The next big job for January is deciding on my product range. This is where trade shows come in handy, with all major suppliers displaying their latest lines under one roof. The problem that all retailers have in common – no matter how big or small our premises are – is that if we are going to take on new lines, we have to decide which lines we will drop to create the space required. Some things are easier to decide than others. For example, when it
When it comes to costumes and accessories things get can a bit more complicated. While our EPOS system tells us we sold 20 of a certain costume, it cannot tell us if this was because of the film just being released or a student’s party that ran a theme party. This is where as buyers we have to be careful. EPOS will tell us all that we all did well with Jurassic Park, Minions and Frozen but it cannot predict when the trend will end and the next one begin. Now I shall go to a quiet darkened room to prepare my survival kit for the NEC. See you on the other side.

This year marks the 67th Nuremburg toy fair, with its dedicated festival, carnival and fireworks offering setting up home in Hall 9. The six-day show takes place between 27 January and 1 February, and is ideal for retailers looking to be ahead of the game when it comes to themes and brands for 2016.

uremburg toy fair – or Spielwarenmesse as it is more officially known – is billed as the place where ‘international toy markets come together’. A truly international event, exhibitors will be attending from over 60 countries this year. Around 30% of them don’t attend any other fairs, so it really is the place to be if you are looking to bag the cuttingedge, must-have product that will set you apart from the competition. Retailers can browse from nearly 3,000 exhibitors and take a wander around the TrendGallery, which features presentations, events and talks all designed to help visitors find out industry trends and themes for 2016. Retailers and buyers who take advantage of this will be able to reap the benefits when planning what to stock in the coming months. Be A Repeat Attender According to Boland Party’s Mark Brett it is worth attending Nuremburg toy fair at least every three years, as there are numerous opportunities to meet suppliers showing unique products you may not find elsewhere. Many of the party companies attending will be launching their brand new products and collections for the first time. OppoSuits co-founder and owner, Jelle van der Zwet, believes that international trading has become much easier over the last few years, in some part due to the Nuremburg toy fair. He points out that: “Spielwarenmesse has grown into the ‘must-attend fair’ for a range of associated fun products and costumes. If you haven’t been to Nuremberg toy fair it’s worth a visit. And if you are planning to attend, come and see OppoSuits on Stand 9E05, it’s also worth a visit!” Talking specifically about the OppoSuits stand, Jelle said: “A key feature will be our brand new, officially licensed Pac-Man suit, but we will also be displaying some of our new summer designs as well as new Halloween and Christmas styles.” Anna Hickman, marketing communications manager for Pioneer Europe, says: “Speilwarenmesse will be the first opportunity of the year for us to showcase our brand new product ranges. It is also the first opportunity to pick up a copy of Qualatex 2016 catalogue, with
over 240 new balloon designs, 48 new party items and a new latex colour.” Pioneer will be displaying its ‘funky milestone numbers’ range on Stand 9D76. This year the stand will be decorated by two very talented balloon artists – Alberto Falcone CBA and Luc Bertrand CBA. Below left: Bristol Novelty bring Cleopatra back to life at Spielwarenmesse. With over 600 varieties of premium fake moustaches, beards and eyebrows, Mustaches have something for everyone to try, and Tomas Siuipys, ceo, likes the idea that people can ‘sample the goods’ at an exhibition. Palmer Agencies will be exhibiting again at Spielwarenmesse on Stand 9F89. With an ever-increasing customer base right across the continent, Palmer Agencies specialises in distinctive Carnival and Halloween merchandise for European independent retailers, making Nuremburg toy fair the perfect platform for them. Animated figures, masks, costumes for adults and children, accessories – anything Carnival, party and Halloween related can be found within Palmer Agencies’ catalogue, and many of those products will be on display at Nuremburg. Exhibiting at Nuremburg toy fair for the first time, Robyn Crowley is looking forward to introducing Bristol Novelty and Forum to European retailers. “We will be sharing Stand 9D57 – 9E58 with Rubies Germany,” she explained, “and will be displaying a limited range.” The UK division of Rubie’s Masquerade will also be at the fair, showcasing its extensive portfolio of children’s licensed costumes, masks and accessories. releases for 2016 will be a guiding ‘force’ when it comes to themes this year. He points out that Rubie’s already hugely popular Star Wars: The Force Awakens licensed range for kids will be on display for the first time, following the movie’s record-breaking release in December. Struan elaborates: “2016 is set to be big for super heroes with Marvel and DC Comics both releasing major blockbusters in the first half of the year.” Taking its position on Stand 12I29, Rubie’s will be unveiling new looks for the biggest heroes out there: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Iron Man and Captain America, who will all have fresh new styles. Fun Shack will be showing its ranges of adult and children’s costumes, together with wigs and accessories, including lots of new and exciting designs, on Stand 9B33. “We strongly believe that the Nuremburg show is very important for distributors who want to reach out to the world’s markets,” Jeffrey continued, “as well as the retailers who travel from all over the world to see the latest designs.” Mark Brett, director at Boland Party, agrees that Nuremberg is becoming increasingly important to the party market. “Once a toy fair with a Christmas hall, there is now a party section which grows year-on-year,” he said. “It is a truly

international event and acts as the main hub for Europe, with a huge amount of exhibitors from beyond.” Boland Party will be taking the opportunity to launch more than 500 new products for 2016, with new products spread across the three main categories of party, dress-up and accessories. All will be revealed on Stand 9E57. BBS is launching a host of new collections for 2016 at Spielwarenmesse. The main display will feature the Modus Vivendi tableware, which is durable, reusable, microwavable, dishwasher-proof and comes in a range of eleven vibrant colours. “We will be also showcasing our licensed melamine, tableware, PP tableware, balloons, straws, candles and bubbles,” said the head of BBS’ new UK division, Tim Peters. “These licensed ranges cover anything from Peppa Pig to Spongebob Squarepants, and just about everything in between!” Northstar Balloons is also extremely excited to be launching so many new lines for 2016. “Where better to introduce them than Nuremburg toy fair?” said UK sales manager Nikki Thompson. “We cannot believe how quickly the fair has come around again, but we are really looking forward to seeing all our customers

there – it’s the ideal venue for catching up. New releases for 2016 will be on show on Stand 9B15, and include sprinkle number balloons – an addition to the successful numbers and letters range – because what’s a party without sprinkles? You can also be the first to see the new pretzel balloon at Nuremburg – perfect for everything from a food stand to a pretzel party! Metamorph GmbH (maskworld.com) supplies customers all over the world, and is attending Spielwarenmesse as a wholesaler this year, at Stand 9C51. According to marketing manager Andreas Bernhardt, Maskworld’s ‘fine sense of the newest trends’ will see the company presenting a plethora of new products, from masks and wigs to their special effects products – latex prosthetics, fake teeth, effect contact lenses and make-up. “We will also be showing fantasy leather products and original Venetian masks for the masquerade market,” he said. With exhibitors like these – not to mention other highlights such as Leg Avenue, Widmann, Belbal, Folat, Henbrandt, Neviti and Party Deco – Hall 9 at Speilwarenmesse is shaping up to be spectacular. So grab your passport and pack your snow boots; PPE will see you there!

During October 2015, news broke that Belbal – one of the longest serving latex balloon manufacturers – was under new stewardship following acquisition by Bart Van Nuffel and Jerome Leclef, together with capital investment firm Dovesco. PPE hopped on a plane to Gdasnk, Poland, to find out more.
I
t came as some surprise to hear, towards the end of 2015, that premium latex balloon manufacturer Belbal was to be taken over by two private investors and a funding group. The popular balloon company first started in 1984, which puts its age well above many in the party trade. A company which has given such longstanding service to the industry – and has made such a significant global footprint on the market – is not normally top of the list when it comes to guessing the next acquisition in the sector.

Belbal’s Belgian roots began to shoot within it’s first year, with significant orders being exported to the United States, following the successful introduction of metallic latex to the range. More local distributors got on board over the proceeding few years, with distribution soon spanning right across Eastern Europe. The next big step, though, came with the launch of the company’s manufacturing headquarters in Gdasnk, Poland. From there, the scale of the operation would unfold on a dramatic level, bringing the current firm to where it is now – a global operation with more than 300 employees, and an astonishing repuation for quality. That reputation for quality has gained Belbal the rights and pleasure to manufacture for some of the best known suppliers worldwide. PPE’s tour of the factory explained a lot about why; it’s a science lab rather than a manufacturing facility, and it is truly mind-blowing. PPE met with Mirek Ciapalski, director of balloon production, and Anna Sitko, research and quality assurance manager, who make up

Walking the aisles of the factory floor, there isn’t one process-stage, one bolt, one square centimetre of equipment that they haven’t built themselves from scratch, or know the intricacies of how it works. “There are dozens of stages of testing on a daily basis,” Anna explained. “Our in-house laboratory will run controlled analysis on everything from colour pigmentation to artificial aging, so that we know exactly how the balloon will perform from the second it leaves here in packaging, to the three days after it has been inflated and is in use.” Mirek concurs; “We fully optimised the Just-In-Time production

PPE Recommends... Belbal welcomes suppliers and retailers to visit the factory for a full tour. It’s an extremely interesting process, and if the opportunity should arise we’d urge you to see for yourself. Enjoy the home-made goulash, avoid the warm beetroot juice. Oh, and following a ‘small’ diversion which saw PPE stranded at 1am a three-hour train journey away from Belbal, don’t fly with Wizzair. operation to serve the print market. We know everything about where our raw material comes from.” When asked if – with such exacting, scientific standard – there were ever product returns, Merrick was happy to say ‘almost never.’ After several hours of looking at the finite production process, the tour took PPE over to the offices which house an extremely friendly team, who are enjoying getting to know their new owners. One of those new owners, Jerome Leclef, comes from a background in packaging. When quizzed on why he made the move to balloons, he explained: “Really we were looking for a product manufacturing company. We wanted something in a niche market and definitely something with a global expansion opportunity.” “The beauty is that we have found a seriously successful company, which doesn’t have any structural problems whatsoever,” Jerome continued. “Bart and I will bring a fresh vision, and an outside looking in perspective, but will not be making any significant changes to either staff, management, or process.” Jerome will largely sit on the commercial and communications side of the business, while Bart will take the reigns on technical and production. But with a solid management team already Below and right: The new Party Balloons range is aimed at the cost-effective end of the retail market, offering retailers a quality option.
in place, long-standing staff will only benefit from fresh backing and energy. Michel Van Even, director of sales, marketing and product development is comfortable with the new regime. “We are most happy to welcome our new leaders to the company,” he said. “We will see some changes, but only for the better. For example, we have always maintained a low-profile presence, whereas now we will start to open ourselves up to a more public appearance, while we start to roll out new initiatives.”
Above: Belbal has a strong reputation with balloon retailing, with its trademark packaging on direct-selling retail lines.
One of these new initiatives is a more mainstream product offering, the Party Balloons line. Offered at hugely costeffective price points, the company will position these as an alternative to far-east imported product. It’s good news for retailers, as they can have Belbal quality balloons – with all the same research and development, safety and quality – for similar pricing to arguably less reliable quality purchases. Other, more significant developments are in the pipeline too, with the

introduction of a demonstration centre to be unveiled very soon. The door is very much open at Belbal now, and the opportunities are not just limited to retail buyers. Belbal manufactures balloons for some of the world’s largest, and bestknown suppliers. PPE’s lips will remain sealed, but it’s fair to say that it would surprise many people to know just how many significant party suppliers trust their entire balloon stock to Belbal. It’s clear that the company will continue with its strategic divisions overall though: private label, retail solutions and party market. That covers just about everything from a mass retailer wanting promotional balloons, right down to independent retailers wanting a reliable range to sell for a few pounds. It’s comforting to know that even small retailers can benefit from working
Don’t Miss! Belbal will be exhibiting at Spielwarenmesse in Nuremberg, January 27 to February 1. It’s a good opportunity to meet Michel and the new owners in Hall 9, stand B45. with this huge company, which is turning over tens of £millions. “The entire industry can rely on Belbal, we make sure of it,” confirmed Michel. “We can turn around private label offerings within six weeks, with even very small minimum order quantities. Similarly we are here to support supply chain solutions – with Belbal you can be assured of a partner. We will be part of your balloon business, not just a great manufacturer.” PPE has enjoyed visiting suppliers and retailers across Europe since expanding over the last year, and this Polish trip was particularly heart-warming. The passion of the team is evident from the new chief executives, right down to the kind colleague who collected us from a train station. It’s rare to see a significant company with such a long, happy marriage between product success and company-wide integrity. It really isn’t just hot air…

Creative Party: Face-To-Face
Celebrating a significant birthday – whether it’s an 18th or an 80th – is always an emotional occasion, with family and friends gathering to celebrate their loved one. Progressive Party Europe recently met with the team at Creative Party to talk about how its new Milestone Birthday range can help set the scene. Left: The new milestone range consists of balloons, streamers, table runners, coordinating tableware, candles, centrepieces, balloon weights, banners and more.
Going For
GOLD M arking a significant anniversary in a person’s life is an important occasion, and it’s only right that the products used to help create the right party atmosphere are of the best quality possible. While there are a number of balloon and partyware ranges already available for these milestone events, Creative Party – a partyware company wellknown for its clever designs, exciting add-ons and high-quality products – has introduced a new collection which is set to shake up the market. Speaking to Creative Party’s Mike and Holly Forder (chairman and marketing manager respectively), it’s clear that the pair are passionate about creating new designs and making sure they are able to offer exactly what the consumer is looking for. Right: The strength of the new offering has been secured with innovative designs and attention to detail.
Added Extras Co-ordinating accessories make it easier for party organisers and offer great up-selling opportunities for retailers. “We have also created gold table runners, double-sided holographic streamers, cake candles, balloon weights – there are lots of opportunities to increase those sales!” said Holly.
“We are passionate about customer service,” said Mike, “and to us that means everything from ensuring we have product in stock to making sure we are able to offer exciting new ranges to keep the our offering fresh and original.” As one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and distributors of partyware, balloons and cake decorations, Creative Party prides itself on offering a growing range of products which cover all key themes and occasions imaginable. So why is now the time for a new Milestone Birthday range? “Customer feedback indicated that the market was tired of the proliferation of pink and blue ranges offered by almost every supplier,” explained Mike. “We could see that consumers wanted something different.” “We chose black and gold as the colour scheme because it hasn’t been done before so the design is innovative and fresh,” Holly interjected. “Gold is a very on-trend colour right now, so using it made sense. We tried to design something sophisticated and stylish rather than cheap and tacky.” The strong colours and bold graphics come together to create a very definitely unisex range which is neither feminine nor masculine and as such appeals to a wider demographic, as Mike pointed out. “Every retailer is short of space and nobody wants to tie money up in too much
stock,” he said. “Many of the bricks-andmortar customers we have visited recently have huge amounts of valuable selling space dedicated to milestone birthday ranges in blue, black and pink. Retailers who choose to stock our black and gold range instead of the blue and pink offerings will be freeing up valuable retailing space.” Not that Mike has anything against pink of course, as Creative Party’s Perfectly Pink milestone range is still a strong seller for the company – in fact, it’s been the number one top selling range for the last three years running! “We’re not saying ditch the pink, far from it – but we do think there is room to move this sector of the market on with the addition of this unisex collection. We believe black and gold will eventually replace the black and silver ranges that a number of us offer.” Product innnovation is as important to the new range as a fashionable palette, with gold glitter table decorations leading
Birthday Balloons! The visually stunning latex balloons are of decorator quality and will be offered in bags of 50 (as well as the usual retail packs), ensuring it is profitable for balloon decorators to use them in bouquets and other designs. the charge. “These are totally innovative for the birthday market,” explained Holly, “and reflect the trend for this type of product elsewhere in the consumer market, particularly at Christmas. We are excited to see what consumers make of them, but the preliminary market research we have undertaken indicates there will be a huge demand for this product.” The partyware holy grail is to create an on-trend milestone birthday range which appeals to all ages and all genders – could this be the collection with the Midas touch? Book Week
A World Of Reading books and enjoying stories are an important part of growing up. The escapism and opportunity for creativity that they provide can be matched by little else – except, perhaps, dressing up. Progressive Party turns the page on the latest chapter in the dressingup extravaganza that is Book Week.
P
rimary schools across the country quickly caught on to the fact that encouraging children to embrace their favourite character by getting into costume works well, and there can barely be a school left in the country that doesn’t have a dress-up day – or two – at some point during the year. Whether schools choose to celebrate the children’s literary favourites in March (World Book Day), April (International Children’s Book Day), May (Children’s Book Week) or even September (Roald Dahl Day) – these occasions – and of course curriculum-based fancy-dress events – continue to be a huge success year after year for UK party retailers. Schools and nurseries get involved in
1
these literary events in a variety of ways, but the most popular allows children to come to school dressed up as their favourite character. As the practise has become more popular (and competitive!) parents have become increasingly inclined to pop to their local party shop instead of cutting up a t-shirt and getting creative with a pillowcase. Children’s dress up designer and manufacturer Pretend to Bee has a wide range of costumes which cater for almost every Book Week need imaginable with generic lines which allow children to be inspired by their favourite fictional characters. “Book Week is always an extremely busy time for us at Pretend to Bee,” said

director, Harrison Palmer. “We pride ourselves on creating high-quality costumes that can be used again and again, not just during Book Week. Our dedicated Book Week range can be attributed to all sorts of fictional characters and so the scope for parents and retailers is endless.” The Pretend to Bee collection includes superhero capes, an owl and fox cape, an authentic looking Robin Hood and Maid Marian as well as the classic fairy, dinosaur, mermaid and dragon. Book week as a business period grew significantly for Delights Direct in 2015. “Some say this has changed from its original brief of dressing as a ‘book’ character,” explained account manager Stuart Wheeler. “Now we see some children going to school as a Ninja Turtle or Superman! You could argue that this is losing sight of the main focus of the day, but you can’t argue that 1 Rey and Finn from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, by Rubie’s. 2 The new Prince of Thieves costume by Amscan. 3 The ever-popular Matilda outfit from Delights Direct.

Book Week
it opens up a much wider range of costumes that sell at this time – which can only be a good thing! Still, on the traditional side we expect Roald Dahl themes to be strong again.” While many of the book week initiatives suggest certain books to use as a starting point, there are key themes which children are likely to return to again and again. Amscan offers many of these, from classic fairytale and historical characters right through to licensed options. “Book Week is becoming an increasingly important dress-up occasion in the calendar and so we have expanded our range to include some exciting new options for 2016,” explained marketing executive Charlotte Cox. “Popular choices include a delightful Pink Fairy costume set or a pretty Lil’ Red Riding outfit – a new Native American Spirit costume is also perfect for those who enjoy western tales!” Action-packed stories are always popular and so its no surprise that pirates, ninjas and vikings feature highly on the list as well, with Amscan’s new Prince of Thieves costume really standing out. Now one of the biggest events in the early part of the year, Book Week really helps make up for the lull after Halloween and Christmas, and so it is important that retailers get stocked up early with the most popular costumes. Pam’s has produced a dedicated Book Week flyer jam-packed with dress-up ideas. “Each page is full of the latest characters from children’s books as well as the old faithfuls,” explained sales director Carl Taylor. “Last year we found a few new costumes that were popular, such as The Hungry Caterpillar, Mog the Left: This Victorian boy accessory set by Palmer Agencies includes cap and waistcoat.
Literary Lines “Book Week is one of, if not the, most popular time for children’s costumes, with only Halloween coming close in terms of sales and orders. Interest and demand for book-themed costumes increases every year, and as such so does our range of stock for babies, children and even teenagers. Curriculum-driven fancy dress is continuing to grow, and we get hundreds of requests from parents with specific book characters in mind, but current characters are also really popular. We’re expecting Star Wars to be big following the film release. That being said, the classics show up again and again during Book Week – one of last year’s surprise hits was the Mad Hatter.” Emma Angel, director, Angels Fancy Dress

Cat and The Tiger Who Came to Tea and we have been searching for more new ones to keep the range fresh and exciting.” New lines at Pam’s for 2016 include characters from traditional nursery books such as Peter Rabbit and The Tiger Who Came to Tea as well as Harry Potter and Willy Wonka for the older children. Costume company Bristol Novelty also produces a Book Week catalogue, and this year’s version will include many new lines selected for this popular event. “We have an unparalleled range of children’s costumes which have been specifically chosen for Book Week,” said sales manager Robyn Crowley. “Our catalogue will be available by the end of January, but the majority of costumes are now in stock and early ordering is advised to ensure you don’t miss out!” “Book week continues to be a major focus in Rubie’s dress-up calendar,” said trade marketing and digital manager Struan Robertson, “and we have bought out fresh new ranges in the 2016 catalogue to cater for the event, which seems to evolve each year.” He continued: “Disney Princesses and Harry Potter have always been popular for Book Week with their relation to popular books and classic fairy tales, but we’ve seen that direct correlations to World Book Day’s £1 books also prove to be successful, as illustrated by The Diary Of Dennis The Menace last year which spurred on sales of our licensed Dennis costumes for both kids and adults.” A Star Wars-based fantasy by Cavan Scott features in the World Book Day 2016 £1 book list (where children can swop tokens for free books). As such, an increase in Star Wars-related dress-up is likely, especially following the huge success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But it’s not all about the movie of the moment. “We’re also seeing year-onyear increases across a broader range of costumes from super heroes to generic

uniforms and dress-up with an historical angle,” indicated Struan. According to Palmer Agencies’ marketing director Sergio Battaner, Book Week sales are not just limited to costumes, with many parents reluctant to shell out for a complete outfit which may only be worn once. “This is a very price-sensitive part of the market,” he explained. “Although most of the sales are costume-related, accessories feature more and more as, with a bit of creativity, parents can create the same character for a more economical price.” As Book Week celebrations have become more popular, it’s no surprise that costume and character choices have become more creative and outlandish. Now, any number of sartorial solutions is likely to be seen sashaying in at the school gate – the only limit is your imagination! Spring Fair 2016
Inset: The Qualatex stand (2015) is always impressive. Below: The catwalk shows and seminars are a highlight.
Fairground Attraction With perhaps the widest product reach of any of the major buying events, Spring Fair really does offer party retailers the perfect opportunity to see what’s new to the market. Anyone who’s anyone will be making their presence known, as the four-day show sees almost the whole retail industry come together to do business from across Europe and beyond. Exhibiting under The Party Show banner creates a strong feeling of identity between the costume makers, balloon specialists and partyware suppliers. Over 100 party suppliers and distributors will be grouped together, ensuring a fun, vibrant experience for the retailers and buyers walking the halls.
Based in Hall 3, a new show floor layout will see The Party Show – which is taking up more floor space than ever before – exhibiting alongside the greetings sector. This gives retailers the ideal opportunity to visit exhibitors outside their ususal remit, encouraging that all-important diversification. So whether you’re looking to expand your offering or focusing on a core area of your business, The Party Show is the perfect place to be inspired by the wealth of new products available in this exciting sector. Party on!

■ Creative Party
■ InCharacter
Creative Party will be exhibiting its Back to Basics range of flag banners, latex balloons, streamers and cake candles, as well as its latest blockbuster the black and gold milestone birthday range, which will be on display for the first time. The Back to Basics ranges are all fast turnover lines, and are ideally suited to the more discerning retailer who wishes to distance themselves from competition and improve margins by offering a more sophisticated upmarket image in their product offerings.
InCharacter Costumes will be showcasing an exceptional selection of outfits for babies, children, teens and adults. The unique designs include some adorable additions for 2016. Baby costumes are vailable in a variety of sizes from six to 24 months with easily-accessible snap fastenings for nappy changing and skid-resistant feet. A fantastic range of quirky costumes for teens and tweens will appeal to a younger audience, while high-quality adult costumes for both men and women are available in a range of sizes.
The UK’s only dedicated show for the party sector, The Party Show is returning to Spring Fair for the fifth year running. Taking place at Birmingham’s NEC between 7 and 11 February 2016, a new location will see party exhibitors offering everything from dress-up to décor and props to paper plates. PPE takes a look at what exhibitors at The Party Show will be presenting to retailers in 2016.
The Stage The Party Show Stage, sponsored by Rubie’s, is one of the most popular features of Spring Fair. It features daily catwalk shows from fancy-dress manufacturers, drawing large crowds with its colourful, energetic format. The Stage also plays host to regular seminars, giving party retailers a lowdon of the latest trends, tricks and techniques.
■ Bristol Novelty Following last year’s move to a significantly larger warehouse, Bristol Novelty is excited to exhibit over 400 new items at the Spring Fair. The fancy dress and costume company greatly expanded its accessory range with products from Forum and will be displaying its usual host of new adult and children’s costumes, Halloween props and accessories, wigs, hats and jokes for 2016. The show is a great opportunity for retailers to plan their Book Week and Halloween orders and get ahead for new items for the upcoming year.

Looking Ahead To 2016
FEEDBACK Less chocolate, more gym visits; these are the promises which start off a typical new year. But personal resolutions aside, PPE was curious as to the hopes and wishes for the party trade as we move into 2016. A selection of retailers shared their hopes for the coming months, while also looking back at the highlights - and lowlights - of 2015.
That Was The Year That Was Cathi Cowan Hijinks & Aha Ha Jokes & Novelties, Edinburgh “2015 was about equal to 2014 but considering 2014 was a great year for us, that’s not bad news! Cathi Cowan We had a few highlights of the year. The obvious ones were Halloween and NYE. This Halloween, Day of the Dead (DOTD) became much bigger. I’m American so have been dressing the shop with DOTD decorations for years anyway, but this year we finally got the costumes too, though I certainly didn’t order in enough black veils! NYE is always mental in Edinburgh. Superheroes seemed to be the big theme this year. That, and masquerade masks! It’s always such a great atmosphere at that time of year. Another highight, this time specific to Edinburgh, is the festival. It seems like the busiest town in the UK for the whole of August. We have people flying in from all over the world, plus hundreds of performers, many of whom want to buy something from us, whether it’s a wig or a silly hat or a full costume. It’s a good time of year for us! However, something that did affect our trade was pop-up shops, sadly ‘popping up’ more and more often. They tend to sell rip-offs and copies, which makes me worry about the standards in safety. I think the incident in 2014 with the cheap costume that set on fire has made some people think more about what they’re buying though. And of course, supermarkets - they’re just so convenienct for people. It’s a lot easier to pick something up in your local Asda than go searching for that must-have costume. Looking to 2016, I have great confidence in the creativity of my staff. They all have a great sense of humour and pay attention to what goes on in other shops. I really rely on my younger staff to notice what’s cool! We often brainstorm to work out the upcoming trends, whether that’s the latest big film or something in the news that inspires people. Sadly, I think there will be a lot of Bowie-inspired purchases this year - memorial make-up, spiky orange wigs, crooked teeth and especially his outfits. When someone who is a hero to so many dies it really sticks in peoples minds, and I think he will become the theme for many fancy dress parties this year.”
Keith & Sharon Morton Castle Caperes, Shropshire “Thanks to a reduction in fuel prices giving people a little cash bonus, 2015 ended more optimistcally than it began! There weren’t any particular highlights for us throughout the year - everything did as Keith & Sharon Morton expceted really. The best thing about 2015 was the continued growth of our helium balloon business. We’re known locally as ‘the balloon shop’ rather than ‘the fancy dress shop’ and we like that, For one thing, balloons are more or less internet proof! The two big events of the year weren’t that great for us - kids costumes for Halloween were slightly up but still a disaster, and NYE was at best static, at worst in decline. The biggest event of the year for us nowadays is Book Week. It overrides all other events. We’ve already put in our forward order for this year. In 2016 we’ll be focusing on balloon sales. Our balloon wall is already 10 x 25ft, but something will just have to give if we need to make it any bigger! I think licensed foil balloons are going to be our biggest seller this year. My biggest disappointment for 2016 is that we won’t be celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday as a nation. Her Jubilee in 2012 was a big boost to the industry with street parties and celebrations up and down the country. It’s a shame we won’t be seeing that again this year. Another disappointment was that Star Wars costumes just didn’t happen! Independent retailers were unfortunately priced out of the game by manufacturers mass-selling to supermarkets. In 2016 I’d like to see more manufacturers taking the attitude that this devalues their brand and giving more support to smaller retailers. Taking action against online sellers that undermine our industry by adding just 50p to the cost price would be another good move. One manufacturer has started doing this already, going so far as to take legal action against some of these sellers. More of that please! As far as promoting our company goes, we still won’t be getting a website! We receive a lot of enquiries through our Facebook page. That together with word of mouth, business cards, and our sponsorship of a local radio station seems to work well for us. Our customer base is essentially in a 10-15 mile radius, so we don’t see the need to do anything further-reaching.” JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016 PROGRESSIVE PARTY EUROPE

Looking Ahead To 2016
Peter Denton In Disguise, Northumberland “2015 was just an average year for us. Even Christmas and New Year were a bit flat - even Santa wasn’t as popular this year! We’re certainly hoping for bigger and better in 2016! Peter Denton “Halloween was the highlight of 2015, even better than previous years. We think the fact that it fell on a Saturday really helped. That said, we still had competition, and not just from supermarkets and pound shops. Even garden centres and charity shops are getting in on the action these days! “But you get what you pay for. Our niche is in quality hire, and word of mouth is our best form of advertising. We are seeing a turnaround but our plan for 2016 is to convince even more people that travelling that little bit further for decent, quality products will be worth their while. We have free parking after all!“
Gary Wakefield Lili Bizarre, Liverpool “2015 was an excellent year! We moved premises at the end of 2014 from out of town to the city centre. It’s the best move we ever made. Gary Wakefield Last year, Book Week and Halloween were the biggest events for us, along with Christmas and New Year. Our sales have grown steadily week-on-week since the move and these occasions were huge indicators of our newfound success! We already have big plans for 2016. We’ll be increasing our product range, stocking high-end Charles H Fox Kryolan make-up and really pushing our balloon sales. That means cold calling, advertising, raising awareness on Twitter. You name it, we’ll be doing it! We have a 16ft balloon wall in the shop and I am a certified balloon artist, so promoting balloon décor seems a good way to boost sales even further. When it comes to costumes, we’re always looking for new products, but it’s impossible to stock absolutely everything. We aim to have one basic, one middle range and one high-end version of all our costumes. That way, we cater to everyone, no matter what they can afford.”
a photo of a barcode in our shop, then going home and trying to find the product cheaper elsewhere! But that said, I think people are beginning to feel disillusioned by the internet. I hope that carries on in 2016! My plans this year are really to carry on with the good work we already do, but I’m also hoping to branch out into quality and classy XXL sized costumes. They’re aren’t many places that specialise in these. Once I’ve build up a good range, I’ll take them online. I may even model a few myself!
Kirstie Dunworth Krazy Kapers, Swansea “We are opening a new shop and unit this year - Kirstie’s Vintage Emporium - so 2015 was manic with planning and buying and orgainsing! We still have Krazy Kapers fancy dress shop in Briton Ferry, Swansea and the emporium is opening in the Pontarddulais area of Swansea in the next few months. In 2015 we did a few magazine articles that talked about our window displays. They’re a good way of showing what we do. We also held a few joint events with photographers, make-up artists and the like. We provided the costumes, they provided us with photos and publicity. We’ll do more of those in 2016 as they give us a great network. The big events of last year were great for us. I’m also a costumier, so I get a lot of requests for original or bespoke costumes. People come in with their own ideas and they can be quite fantastic! Day of the Dead was a big theme in 2015, not just for Halloween, but also New Year’s Eve. There was a big gothic party in our area and I supplied lots of costumes for that. The focus for the emporium is on props and costumes from all eras and styles, both hire and sales. We already do themed events, providing costumes for anything from the decades to eclectic, punk to modern. This will just give us a much bigger shop front for our 7,000 costumes. We’ve also bought another shop in Gorseinon. It doesn’t have a name yet, but along with Krazy Kapers and the emporium, we are hoping for a very good 2016!”
Kate Moore Jolly Jesters, Swanwick, Derbyshire “2015 was better than 2014 in terms of customers and sales, but obviously we’re hoping for an even better 2016! Our busiest period was NYE - it Kate Moore was the best we’ve had recently after a few years of decline. We did notice there were no particular trends in themes as there have been in previous years. I think what has been hard for us is that we’re situated just out of town, so people have to make an effort to come to the shop. It’s not as convenient as popping into your local Peacocks or pound shop, all of whom are selling costumes now. On top of that, I’ve noticed that people don’t want to spend as much lately - if they can find it cheaper on the internet, even a counterfeit version of a licensed product, then they’ll take it. We’ve even noticed people taking

Any Excuse FOR A PARTY The last few months of any year are undoubtedly the busiest for most party retailers, with the Halloween madness closely followed by Christmas and New Year festivities. The season is a tough act to follow – but that’s no excuse for putting your proverbial feet up. PPE takes a look at how to make the most of those all-important miniseasons taking place in the first few months of the year
A
longside the more traditional and well-established dates such as St. Patrick’s Day and Easter, where themed parties are already popular, an increasing number of events have been popping up in the first few months of the year, from Chinese New Year in central London to ski-
themed Carnivals on the Swiss slopes. These smaller events can provide a steady stream of business for the fancy dress and party retailer, willing to make the most of the opportunities as they present themselves and in doing so, get the year off on the right foot. After all – why not start as you mean to go on!

Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day Whether it’s to show appreciation or affection, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day are both popular categories for foil balloons as they make the perfect accompaniment to cards and flowers.
Mardi Gras and carnival is associated with the religious requirement for confession before Lent begins and it can often last for a period of weeks. Celebrations include wearing masks and costumes, dancing, parades and debauchery!
Amscan has added 11 new designs to its Mother’s Day collection from standard foils to this impressive Watercolour Heart UltraShape.
Delights Direct is well stocked up for Carnival with a huge range of costumes and accessories – this Brave Crusader is expected to be popular this year. These colourful Mardi Gras balloons from Betallic – an 18” square holographic balloon and a 34” feather mask design – will help set the scene .
These Happy Mother’s Day balloons (a 33” holographic shape and a 29” Mighty Bright Shape) from Betallic will make mums melt.
Carnival is an important season for OppoSuits, given its presence throughout mainland Europe and the Harleking is perfect for parades!
One of Pam’s bestselling hballoons for Valentine’s Day 2015 was this red heart foil balloon, and it has a huge delivery booked in, so get your back orders in now before they all go!
Colourful new lines from Unique Party include this Mardi Gras partyware and décor range.
Chinese New Year
Amscan’s Chinese New Year party collection features a traditional design across tableware, decorations, a Chinese Dragon SuperShape foil balloon, hats, fans and party favours.
The festivities kick off on 8 February, when the Chinese calendar marks the start of the New Year. The year of the monkey, 2016 will see families gather together and exchange gifts, while people also wear red clothes, decorate with poems on red paper, and give children lucky money in red envelopes.
These good luck lanterns are just one of a range of Chinese New Year items from Pam’s.
Ten new balloon designs from Qualtex include this 18” microfoil and 11” printed latex, perfect for bouquets.

St Patrick’s Day
Taking place on 17 March, St Patrick’s Day celebrates the patron saint of Ireland. What began as a religious feast day has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, and a whole lot of green. Typically a boozy affair, celebrations can get quite raucous.
This traditional Irish Leprechaun sign sells well for Star CutOuts, with space to personalise it with a message for family and friends.
This ‘piggy back leprechaun’ is new from Bristol Novelty for 2016 and will certainly stand out in that sea of green! Amscan has everything to create the perfect Irish setting with co-ordinating shamrock-inspired partyware and balloons, as well as fun wearables such as these glitter fun glasses.
There’s a very good reason this shamrockcovered, green OppoSuit is dubbed ‘The Patrick’... Rasta Imposta’s Shamrock Sweetheart is perfect for enter into the spirit of things, while fun accessories include a Green Beer Mug Hat and this Kiss Me I’m Irish Fedora.
St George’s Day Palmer Agencies offers extraordinary quality merchandise like this Leprechaun costume, which includes all accessories. A true classic!
This 18” square balloon from Betallic features a classic Shimmering Shamrocks design.
Unique Party offers a whole host of items to celebrate St Patrick’s day from fun partyware to dress-up accessories.
The 23 April is the feast day of St George, the patron saint of England. There is currently an on-going campaign to make the day a national holiday to encourage people to celebrate it more.
InCharacter’s adorable Lil Dragon is perfect for both babies and toddlers. These all-in-one costumes include easily accessible snap fastenings and skidresistant feet, as well as detachable wings.
One of the oldest Christian celebrations, Easter is a popular holiday across the UK. Easter gifts often focus on eggs, and Easter egg hunts and painting are popular activities for children. The Easter Bunny story originated from Germany and is a relatively new addition to the holiday.
Easter
Pretty pastels and egg themes are strong in these new Easter designs from Betallic, with a 39” foil shape taking centre stage.
Close your eyes and think of England! Patriotism and national pride are reflected in Star Cutout’s Great Britain range. Qualatex are offering two new Easter designs – a cute Baby Chick and an 18” Happy Easter microfoil are the perfect complement to existing Easter designs.
This loveable Wee Wabbit costume from InCharacter includes easily-accessible snap fastenings and skid-resistant feet.
Amscan’s Easter collection includes some gorgeous new decorations featuring pretty pastel designs which coordinate with the new ‘Lovely Easter’ tableware ensemble.
It wouldn’t be spring time without the pitter patter of rabbit’s feet. Disney’s Thumper, from Star Cutouts, is a very happy bunny.
Perfect ensembles and accessories from Unique Party this year come with everything your customer will need to celebrate on St George’s Day.

1920s was big. We ordered in lots of flapper dresses and only had one left after a busy Christmas and New Year.
Accessories
Bristol Novelty and Smiffy’s
Headbands and cigarette holders were popular, to go with the flapper dresses. 1920S is always a popular theme for NYE. Men seemed to be dressing up outfits they already had rather than buying the whole costume. Swords, guns and face masks all sold well though.
Kids Costumes

The Little Santa for toddlers was very difficult to buy elsewhere. People reported ordering on the internet but not receiving it, so we did well out of that! Also a good price at just £5.

Licensed Star Wars costumes were very popular, with storm troopers and Princess Leia doing well. Novelty lines like Christmas pudding and elves are good fun costumes for all ages as well. Flapper dresses for the ladies and gangster costumes for men always sell really well for NYE.
Rubie’s
Fun Shack
We stocked a big range of masquerade masks this year – they are fabulous! We sold about 95% of our stock. Best year ever for masks.
Chrismas wasn’t our best this year. There are so many cheap costumes available from supermarkets that it can be a struggle. New Year was better – TV and film or 1920s were the popular themes. Things seem to be on the up. We’re lucky in that we have a lot of students and families in our area. We’re looking forward to 2016!
