Heavy Timber High-Rise in LA Arts District site: 707 traction avenue Los Angeles, ca 90013 Instructor: Olivier touraine Comprehensive studio Fall 2017 In an effort to search for more sustainable methods of construction, researching the capabilities of mass timer construction on mid- and high-rise buildings is becoming increasingly relevant. In this comprehensive studio, we were challenged to propose an incubator office tower in the Los Angeles Arts District that explores heavy timber as a construction technique and space-making structure. This project explores the idea of creating a wicker basket as an exoskeleton structural system that twists onto itself at the top. Due to the weaving structure that goes in and out of the floor plates, the project explores the idea of a modular, triangular curtain wall system to create a faceted facade.

PERFORMANCE + STORAGE BOX site//CLIENT: 32ND STREET usc MAGNET SCHOOL 822 WEST 32nd ST. lOS Angeles, CA 90007 Instructors: VALERY AUGUSTIN & Charles LAGRECO RESEARCH-DESIGN-BUILD TOPIC studio SPRING 2017 The goal of the RDB studio was the development of a research-based approach to design build, tasking students with defining a series of tactics and strategies for fabricating functional prototypes for the 32nd Street USC Magnet School. The resultant solutions were to be site specific, however, the broader ambition of the studio was to speculate on solutions that are adaptable, scalable and deployable as prototypes for multiple LAUSD campuses. The semester was organized to run both sequentially and concurrently; focused research serves as a point of departure for studies and models that function as data to inform further research. The information gleaned became the basis of design for built prototypes; i.e. a feedback loop for informed design.

LATIN & SOUTH AMERICA STUDY ABROAD COUNTRIES: MEXICO, PERU, BRAZIL Instructor: JAMES STEELE GLOBAL STUDIES studio SUMMER 2016 Located in the Mooca district, a postindustrial area in Sao Paulo, the site offers a plethora of opportunities for redevelopment and revitalization. We recognized the need to maximize the site, educate the people, and ultimately host the public. The site offers views to a proposed lake front on the west facade and views to a railway park on the east facade. With access to the Tamanduatei River and proposal of revitalizing the rivers of Sao Paulo, biological waste can be dropped off to the site to fertilize the soil. The cultivation of beans would also educate the people and ultimately allow for a source of income. With a Favela located across from the site, the proposal includes a prototype for social housing where the inhabitants will be invited to relocate to. Lastly, the proposal prepares the site to host the public by including a market, dining options, and green spaces. By retrofitting the structures of the existing building, a House of Culture will provide a space for artisans to gather, learn and create their crafts.

Architectural practices re-imagined site: 3625 S. GRAND AVE Los Angeles, ca 90007
Advisor: HADRIAN PREDOCK THESIS studio SPRING 2018 The Insider. I deal with the interiority of architecture and work in various scales from a chair to urban rooms. I am most interested in challenging the binary status of architecture comprised of interior and exterior practices. I am believe that architecture has been pitted against interior practices and has drifted towards becoming solely a materialization of exterior practices. Instead, architecture aught to incorporate interior practices just like how Mies, Loos, Rudolf, and Panton have done for a period of time in their career as architects. Perhaps architecture can start to index qualities of an interior rather than become solely a expressionistic, weatherproofed shell. Perhaps interiors can start to index exterior systems and logics rather than become solely a space for program.

Architecture is in a state of having an identity crisis. Architecture is being forced to choose to be either a materialization of exterior or interior practices.
Architecture has become solely focused on exterior logics, aesthetics and practices. Architecture has become dissatisfied with just one way of being.
Architecture is nostalgic for the days when there was a higher interest for the inside, resulting in Mies’, Loos’, Rudolf ’s, and Panton’s experimentation with interiors. Architecture isn’t sure what it wants to be anymore.
Architecture has decided to go to therapy.

Hello Therapist. I am having an identity crisis. I am not satisfied being just the materialization of exterior practices.
