Project + Design Statement This First Year project is broken into three parts. The first design phase is to rigorously investigate alternate methods of using 3D line networks to develop formal systems that are structural, spatial, organizational and capable of variation. The second phase will use these models as the point of departure for the development of a proposal for an observation tower on a southwest facing shoreline in Southern CA. The goal of this exercise is to further develop formal systems from the first design phase in order to adapt and fulfill programmatic constraints, vertical movement and the sublimation of lines to solids. The third phase requires to re-use, expand and further develop this formal logic to establish a larger site strategy and spatial organization, as well as new trajectories of movement and programmatic relationships. The pavilion serves as a shading and framing device as the complex geometries and angles create different zones as people approach from different angles.

YR 2: Addition to Mar Vista Tract Home, 2014

Project + Design Statement Gregory Ain’s Mar Vista Tract homes provide an opportunity for renovation and revitalization. Each studio section is assigned a street while each student is assigned an individual house. Using the transformed form from the graphic exercise, one is to create a 500 square foot addition to the original house. How one determines the engagement of the old and the new will arise from how one has conceptualized and analyzed his or her form in the graphic exercise. The role or program of the addition is to be addressed individually but must be fundamentally influenced by the form and systems that one is starting with and should engage a re-framing of what is needed to live in a house in 2014 rather then 1948. Inspired by Steven Holl’s Daeyang Gallery and House, the original home is given an underground gallery space where a reflecting pool sits on top of the gallery. This allows for light to be filtered into the space through the water and into each individual skylight. The integrity of the house is preserved from the street view while the back is transformed into an Arabian mote for entertaining with diamond mosaics paving the entire backyard. The client and their guests would experience reality (the original house), dream (the underground gallery), clarity (the reflecting pool), and reflection (the mote).

Project + Design Statement Key to creating equitable urbanism is the need for regeneration strategies and projects that are well-linked through proximity, with improved accessibility to public programs, services and spaces and with opportunities for affordability of housing and localized superimposition of micro uses that can provide for mixed neighborhoods and optimized communities that are integral to the intensity of activities and opportunities of the reborn city core. Augmenting the existing urban make-up with development that can agitate and manifest the aforementioned urban objectives renews the faith that the city can again fulfill its role as the “social condenser.� Considering typical high density housing typologies create a lack of sense of a single family home, envisioned is a typology where individual units can be prefabricated and stacked on top of other units. This breaks away from the ideology that high density housing would entail owning a box within a larger box/form, and also emphasize the idea of having a personal entrance.

Project + Design Statement CALA - The Center for Architecture & Urban Design Los Angeles is envisioned to be the center for design professionals, civic leaders, and the general public interested in topics relating to the built environment. The American Institute of Architects Los Angeles Chapter and the Architecture + Design Museum would be relocated to be housed inside the CALA. Moreover, CALA’s proposed site of the First Street Bridge between the Arts District and Boyle Heights is to bring two completely different demographics together and unite them as a community. The integrative studio (ARCH 302b) curriculum aims to push sophistication and integration of various components of architecture that include site, program, form, structure, environmental systems, codes, materiality, etc to manifest a proposal for CALA. Through a semester of iterations for a design for the CALA, it was found most appropriate to design a portal, bar building that demarcated these two communities. By doing so, the site context is hardly disturbed with an foreign form, but a glass and concrete building that hovers across the bridge. Moreover, the idea of having a perpendicular extension of the bridge would allow for people to maximize engagement with the river and take in unique views that was not possible before. By creating a public terrace with pop up cafes and bars, the public is engaged to access the building. This terrace bridges across the bridge that separates the private spaces from the semi-private spaces. Patrons will be able to flock to the CALA to enjoy the view of Downtown LA, a quintessential picture of Los Angeles.

Winter 1937 unbuilt due to funding

Like many other projects in Mies's portfolio, this project celebrates minimalism and horizontality through the use of a planar grid system. The architecture is created, and perceived, as a structure composed of planar surfaces with perfect alignment to corresponding elements. In our proposed detail construction drawings, we keep this thought in mind and here by propose solutions that echo with the idea of extended planes intersecting to create a connection. Thus, we aim to use elements that are tight and rigid, yet thin and straight to adhere to Mies's design principle. For structure, slender cruciform columns made of steel angled plates are inserted at points only necessary for a load-bearing diaphragm. For enclosure, the structure is composed of planar glass panels to maximize views and emphasize transparency into the interior. In addition to minimalism, this is also a project in which Mies uses local materiality for the first time. The fieldstones on wall facades are a representative of he brings the exterior to the interior by introducing nature into a home.

Project + Design Statement

Located in the Mooca district, a postindustrial area in Sao Paulo, our site offers a plethora of opportunities for redevelopment and revitalization. Post site analysis, we recognized the need to maximize the site, educate the people, and ultimately host the public. The site offers views to a proposed lake front on the west facade and views to a railway park on the east facade. Moreover, considering the fact that it is cheaper to import beans than grow locally, the need for cultivating beans is ever more pressing. With access to the Tamanduatei River and proposal of revitalizing the rivers of Sao Paulo for logistics purpose, biological waste can be dropped off to our site to fertilize the soil. The cultivation of beans would also educate the people and ultimately allow for a source of income. With a favela located across from the site, the proposal includes a prototype for social housing where the inhabitants will be invited to relocate to. Lastly, the proposal prepares the site to host the public by including a market, dining options, and green spaces. By retrofitting the structures of the existing building, a House of Culture will provide a space for artisans to gather, learn and create their crafts for the on site market.
