Winning Rendering + Concept Retail Design INTL Fall 2017 During my study abroad in Stuttgart, Germany, we got the opportunity to design for an upcoming cosmetic extension for Deep Nature, a spa and wellness company. Inspiration of a geode came to mind with its natural state revealing a rough exterior with a smooth and refined interior. Meet Deep Nature’s flagship store where users can interact before buying the product and experience Earth’s pure minerals.
6
Including interactive technology allows customers to further explore the ingredients that make up their products. This large scale monitor could easily translate to an online web page or App.

The Entrance The space itself was inspired by the geode and its unique form. A mixture of rough and smooth surfaces + matte and glossy make up this material palette.

Chef Nancy Silverton & baker Miche Bacher team together to create unique hand crafted creations with inspiration from the Mediterranean sea.
Their playfulness with flavors induce a whirlwind of senses that include different and familiar foods with an added twist.
Céleste is for the diner who isn’t afraid of adventure and falling down the rabbit hole. Lift each plate up to reveal your foods’ new canvas.

Take a second glance. New experiences and details are revealed through light, materials, angles and reflections. The Sun room to the right boasts a wall fountain that makes customers feel as if there is no barrier to the exterior world. Below: Diagram and elevations of the atrium lit sun room with “caged” booths. Experience the enclosed dining booths during the day and night for a different atmospheric experience.
For the luxurious bar, I divided the space with a semi transparent “wall” made of hanging brass pendant lights. This visual barrier of lights create this illusion of space separation without completely blocking the view and adding to the mystery of what is behind it in the distance.

A unique selling point of Celeste is it’s swing dining to the left of the entry. A pergola added to the four existing columns unifies this space and designates it as “special” seating.

Boll & Branch is an ethical luxury bedding store with more than just linens to offer. They base their brand on transparency, and maintaining fairness, without compromising great quality. Keeping these principles in mind, MKG Design helped create a 6 month pop up shop so customers could feel the softness of the sheets and connect with the growing brand. Heres what we came up with!
18
Custom adjustable shelving and easily changeable signage was ideal for the space and brand. We re-purposed existing shelving units by painting them white, adding ladder shelves and a natural crown molding at the top.

From start to finish, Boll & Branch wanted to do two refreshes in the store. We had to make the store versatile and flexible in order to grow with their needs. The ipad bar (right image) has a removable wooden block that reveals a cash wrap complete with power when they want to start a formal checkout system. Overall the entire store is meant to grow with the brand with its expanding inventory and customer base. It was so great to see a project come to life!

Sheets are hung from twisted pieces of cotton threads. (Store images courtesy of Architectural Digest)

Umami, translates to “the fifth taste. The Japanese term,
Engage your taste buds and eye for art while you create a customized sushi roll and savory dining experience.

Working with 3CDC for a building on 1405 Walnut street in Over the Rhine Cincinnati, Ohio proved challenging. We were not allowed to change column details, cornices, the roof, or add windows along the length of the building.
From the second floor of Umami, customers can see the commotion, but aren’t necessarily apart of it. With the sushi bar and noise concealed, diners can enjoy their rolls in peace but are still connected to the energy in the atmosphere.
My clients, May and Roy, live above their sushi restaurant, Umami. Their apartment reflects a cooler toned color palate contrasting to the warm restaurant. May and Roy can relax above even with hectic work days just a floor below.

Fixture Design: The “Maya” Lbrands Spring & Fall 2016
We wanted to create a fixture similar to our standard “Z-fixture”, but one that was unique for this smaller China based store. Our defined challenges were to have the footprint remain the same or become narrower and add storage for more product.
32
Elements like the two stepped fragrance testers and light box shelves are additive pieces that can be subtracted if needed to pass clearance.
Overall the piece is very malleable and works together as building blocks. Each added piece supports the whole with the main part being the three bay storage shelves.

The furniture and space should be just as flexible as the students and faculty that use the space so the introduction of multi functional moving furniture is key. Group projects, collaboration, studying, and tutoring can all be done in this malleable space that conforms to each individual who uses it.

A visual precipice and ceiling panels lead students to the different areas of the library. There are six panels, one for each of the houses. Flexible furniture breaks the ergonomics of a typical school environment and adding low and high seating opportunities.
Carpeted raised flooring is one of the visual and physical dividers between hard seating and soft seating arrangements. The platform houses mainly bar stools with a few singular chairs and coffee table.

Bookcases and an Ahrend living wall separate hard seating spaces from the lounge and waiting area. Acoustic panels that make up the Ahrend living wall are light and easy to move, sound absorbent, come in a variety of colors, and serve as a usable transition space. The school prides itself with an original house system where grade levels and classes are engaged in friendly competition and mentor-ship.

Summit is an athletic center where those in the Cincinnati region can achieve their goals both mentally and physically. With a three story rock wall on the interior and mimicking mountain facade on the outside, Summit is the ideal place to push personal limits and get in shape. The idea of cutting the corner is how I found the shape of Summit. By placing several different versions of the corner together, it produced an angular cluster form that went along my theme of climbing to physical and mental fitness. The concept of the ribbon window is found on the side of the building as the mountain’s “stream” as it flows down the multi-storied facade.

The Kathryn Coffee Table holds magazines and books several different ways, all at a 45° angle. This was a piece of furniture of our choosing so I decided to make an unique table that I could showcase in my home.
The Soft maple is a more durable and harder wood than the Sapele so I chose that as the base to touch the ground. Below: Final line drawings for the Kathryn Coffee Table.
This was an incredible learning experience that I got to bring to life with my own hands and I hope to have more pieces coming out in the near future!
