How did it all start? Clash of Colors

by Jeff Fifield, PhD.

This will be the 24th annual Clash of Colors. Twenty four years of students and teachers coming together to play and compete cooperatively in bizarre games full of fun for all with breaks for fruit, popsicles, and dancing. Students in grades 1-12 are divided into four teams – usually of distinct colors (This year’s colors being Blue, Green, Pink, & Purple) and at times according to themes (ex.: Mayan elements, Civilizations, etc.) which are led by our senior students. So many years ago, the event was created with the intention of creating community, providing leadership opportunities, and a platform for demonstrating-livingcelebrating the Maya Spirit. Holbrook Jackson sums it up well in saying – We take chances, risk great odds, love, laugh, dance … in short, we play. The people who play are the creators. For this event – all of this is evident!

As Clash of Colors continues to evolve at Maya, as well in the seven different countries that former teachers have spread the event to, we find this year’s event offering something new. After the team’s rousing entrance into the gym to start the day with an opening ceremony, color teams will participate in 4-way cooperative competitions to earn points for their respective colors. During the second half of the day, students will then focus upon the arts as they create murals, music from re-cycled material self-made instruments, and perform dramatic scenes based on their team names (that they will choose) with a magical/mythical twist to be presented on stage in the PAFA at the end of the day. Points will be awarded throughout the day by judges for performances in the games and arts as well as for demonstration of Qualities: Sportsmanship, Leadership, Teamwork, Character, & Spirit. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places as well as special recognition for exemplary Sportsmanship. A key question for all of us to ask ourselves in order to continue this fine tradition is – What is needed to ensure a successful event? The simple reply is - Bring

your best, be your best, and do your best and so that the rest will be memorable as we enjoy the fun together!

High School Art Second Semester

Concentration Portfolios This semester in High School Art at Colegio Maya students are busy developing their own concentration portfolios, based upon the AP concentration portfolio concept. In January students chose a theme to base nine separate pieces on. The themes for student artwork are as unique and diverse as the students at Colegio Maya. Some themes chosen within the three high school art classes at Colegio Maya are: time, the zodiac, flowers, weaponry, the body, the ocean and pollution. Students use these themes to inspire original artwork that will then be presented in a final show at the end of the year.

Each project for their portfolio spans two weeks of working time, ending in class critique and evaluation, or teacher written feedback. Creating a portfolio requires focus, skill, creativity and determination. It has been an amazing experience getting to know my students here at Colegio Maya. The High School art classes are filled with wonderful, talented and determined students. The class itself has so much potential for growth and development, and I am excited to be an active part of it. It is truly a privilege to guide my students in the process of making portfolios and developing their skills. “We get the freedom of choice in class, and we must enjoy what we are creating, so we can stay focused upon our theme the entire semester (Irene Delgado).
