How did it all start? Clash of Colors

by Jeff Fifield, PhD.

This will be the 24th annual Clash of Colors. Twenty four years of students and teachers coming together to play and compete cooperatively in bizarre games full of fun for all with breaks for fruit, popsicles, and dancing. Students in grades 1-12 are divided into four teams – usually of distinct colors (This year’s colors being Blue, Green, Pink, & Purple) and at times according to themes (ex.: Mayan elements, Civilizations, etc.) which are led by our senior students. So many years ago, the event was created with the intention of creating community, providing leadership opportunities, and a platform for demonstrating-livingcelebrating the Maya Spirit. Holbrook Jackson sums it up well in saying – We take chances, risk great odds, love, laugh, dance … in short, we play. The people who play are the creators. For this event – all of this is evident!

As Clash of Colors continues to evolve at Maya, as well in the seven different countries that former teachers have spread the event to, we find this year’s event offering something new. After the team’s rousing

entrance into the gym to start the day with an opening ceremony, color teams will participate in 4-way cooperative competitions to earn points for their respective colors. During the second half of the day, students will then focus upon the arts as they create murals, music from re-cycled material self-made instruments, and perform dramatic scenes based on their team names (that they will choose) with a magical/mythical twist to be presented on stage in the PAFA at the end of the day. Points will be awarded throughout the day by judges for performances in the games and arts as well as for demonstration of Qualities: Sportsmanship, Leadership, Teamwork, Character, & Spirit. Awards will be given for 1 st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places as well as special recognition for exemplary Sportsmanship. A key question for all of us to ask ourselves in order to continue this fine tradition is – What is needed to ensure a successful event? The simple reply is - Bring your best, be your best, and do your best and so that the rest will be

memorable as we enjoy the fun together!

Warriors love to read! By Angelique Vives Our Secondary Library is a learning media center where different fun and engaging activities go on throughout the year. Every year we get new and interesting books full of adventure, romance, mystery, drama and many other different catching genres. Every March 2nd we celebrate Dr. Seuss, a great mind, inspiration and genius. This year we will be commemorating Lewis Carroll "Alice in Wonderland" 150th Anniversary. During the last week of April the Library will be hosting a Mad Hatter Tea Party full of surprises and unexpected characters. Join us in this wonderful celebration COMING SOON!!

Human Rights Conference By Katia Morales What a wonderful experience for our kids! The conference speakers were absolutely amazing. The students particularly enjoyed the presentations by the Chinese, Cuban and Haitian activists. In addition, I really enjoyed the presentation by Tutu from Equatorial Guinea.

Our kids were engaged and paying attention and when time came for questions from the audience, they eagerly jumped at the opportunity- and what wonderful questions they asked. During lunch time, they took time to seek out the presenters and talk to them. Needless to say I was so proud of our Maya students. We also noticed how so many of the things we covered in AP Comparative Government were discussed by the activists. The Marroquin University took wonderful care of us while we were there, facilitating our registration, providing us with snacks and lunch and checking in on us. I am especially appreciative of Mr. Calzada and his family who took the time to talk to our students and ask them about their opinions and views. Thank you so much for opportunity for myself and the 11th grade students. If you could also extend my gratitude to Mr. Calzada on behalf of our students. Finally, I'd suggest we purchase the books by Jean-Robert Cadet, the Haitian activist.
