GLOBAL EDUCATION POSTER PACK- ACTIVITIES AND DISCUSSIONS Summer 2008 brought together young peole from Guatemala, Nicaragua and Colombia and Cork to share their vision for a better future and to express what was important to them as young people. The young people were participating in a European Voluntary activity as part of the European Youth in action Programme Using slogans created by their friends and peers in each country they created posters to communicate their messages. The project gave the young people the opportunity to explore what issues face young people in each of the participating countries. The posters were displayed in the city centre as part of Globalfest. The project allowed them to identify with eachother and share their dreams and consider how they can work together to make the world a more just place...how to be Global citizens! You can find out more about the project art www.globalfestjuly08.info We would like to share our experiences with you and invite you to explore, reflect and create. These activities are appropriate for the classroom or youth work setting. Below is a list of resources that are enclosed in the pack and discussion and activities you can carry out with your group

Discuss what are each of these oranisations doing to make a difference for young people. What do you think young people are motivated to attend these projects? What activities can you be involved in to make a dif ference in your local community? What activities can you be involved in to make a difference in the world?...maybe the activites of this pack are a way of you making a start to be a Global citizen!
Examples of propoganda art and contemporary art by Shephard Fairey One propaganda poster is called 'Political power comes from the barrel of a gun' - Artist unknown. 1968, a Chinese poster from the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution period. Explore the background of communist propaganda posters. Why are the images striking? Shephard Fairey is a contemporary artists who has been influenced by propaganda posters to create his own work that also communicates strong messages. You can see more of his work at www.obeygiant.com We used his work as inspiration for our pieces and how he mixed collage, pattern design and text. Maybe you will be inspired by him too! Shephard Fairey's version of 'Political power comes from the barrel of a gun' is re-titled, "Guns and Roses" uses the idea of the old poster but transforms to have a new message How has he changed the image? GLOBAL EDUCATION POSTER PACK- ACTIVITIES AND DISCUSSIONS 17 Posters made by young people in Cork July 2008 & 2 text sheet Place the posters around the walls or on the floor. Ask each person in your group to stand by the image that that they find most attractive Why is it attractive? How does the image connect to the text? What message is the artist communicating? What does it mean to you? What techniques were used to create the images? We invite you to display them in public place were others can them. EXPLORE THE SLOGANS Make copies of the pages with slogans created by our partner young people in Latin America and and out to your group. Ask each young person to choose a slogan that they feel they can relate to and that they feel is important to communicate. discuss what the message is important. Use copies of the next page for the young people to write their own slogans. MAKE YOUR OWN POSTERS Choose a slogan either one you have written or one from one of the enclosed pictures. Gather Material, photo images, magazines, colored and patterned paper. Access to a copier would be very useful! We used spray paint and cut out stencils for some of our designs. Pattern stencils can also be effective with paint and small rollers. As you think about designing your own posters consider how you can attract attention to your message. We decided to limit our colour range to red black and white. We used brown wrapping paper as a background. We used Shephard Fairey and the old propaganda posters as inspiration. You can choose what materials and methods you would like to use.

Making your own posters expressing the opinions of young people is a way of accomplishing the right to be listened to! Listening to opinions young people from Latin America (as you have done) helps develop understanding about how we can work together to make the world a fairer place.

GLOBAL EDUCATION POSTER PACK- PARTNER PROFILES Cooperacion Renovacion Medellin, Colombia. This organsiation is based in that heart of a Barrio(neighbourhood) in Medellin called Castilla. Castilla has a history of struggle with drug dealing and gang violence in the past. Change came around when people said 'No we have had enough, things have to change" Cooperacion Renovacion was one of the tools of change. Local adults and young people had a vision of a new community were people didn't live in fear. This vision became reality. Young people came together to learn art, music, theatre and dance as an alternative to be involved in gangs. They made street parades and festivals to show that young people are skilled and can do positive things in their community. Now hundreds of young people are involved in the programmes and the young people of Castilla are regularly invited to perform in special events like the annual Medellin Flower Festival. Young people who have developed through the organisation are now teaching and supporting younger kids in the programme.
Funarte, Nicaragua Since 1987, FUNARTE's has been working with young people in a project called MURALISMO. Each week children meet in a art workshop has a social justice theme with interactive discussion among the trainers and children followed by painting. FUNARTE believe that by talking about their environment and expressing feelings that they could build a better society in their community. The objective of the muralism workshops is to use art as a creative means for children and youth to express their feelings about the world in which they live. The young people design murals so their opinions get presetned in public places. The young people talk to local community leaders and the government representatives about the changes they want to take place. The city have recently been declared the 'City of Murals' with over 100 murals adding colour to the streets of the city.
La Cambalacha, Guatemala Four decades of civil war, and centuries of colonial oppression have left communities like San Marcos La Laguna the home of La Cambalacha divided by socio-economic position, gender, religion, language and more. These communities have been marginalised, segregated and deprived of many basic human needs. Opportunities for education and employment are limited. In the community of San Marcos and the surrounding communities La Cambalacha uses art as an educational and therapeutic tool to heal the wounds of the past, to start practicing peace, and to transform the community to have respect for nature, interculturality and human rights. Wo r k s h o p s i n d a n c e p a i n t i n g d r a m a a n d s t r e e t p a r a d e s e n g a g e hundreds of children and advanced par ticipants receive training and a scholarship to work with the organisation. ‘This project has been funded with support from the European Commission.
