Intro

Intro to Robotization The Why Factory is a global think-tank that explores possibilities for the development of our cities by focusing on the production of models and visualizations for cities of the future. The Robotic City seminar developed a Library of Robotic speculations imagining the future of technologies and how those could change the planet and the way we inhabit our cities because we believe that technology is an important component in the future of humanity and urban planning. From pop culture to scientific research and applications, we have mapped the evolution and advances of robotic technologies and the place they take in our cities in order to develop a library of speculations. This library is composed of future potential scenarios- from utopian to dystopian, from near to far future, from auto-, robo-,

14

Intro

nano-, to geno. We have produced a series of design visions exploring what are the potentials and spatial implications of the robotic city in order to develop unique and cutting edge narratives and future urban scenarios. We have tested those scenarios on existing situations. How they change the form of the streets, infrastructure, houses, urban blocks, neighborhoods, landscapes, etc.? How do they redefine build forms, leisure, mobility, public space, etc.?

Intro

15

“A vision is, in a way what happens between a question mark and a proposal. It asks the big questions and then paints an image for the future with its answer. Most importantly, it is a dream for the city and for its spatial translation that offers a long term, cohesive, seductive, and strong perspective for future societies. It is part curiosity, part exploration, and part a real problem solving. The role of the visionary is to guide, and direct the course for this increasingly urban world. Winy Maas

From pop culture to scientific research and applications, this is a map of the evolution and advances of robotic technologies and the place they take in our cities. We explore and dissect web pages, press articles, blogs, scientific papers, etc. to collect facts, figures, quotes and questions related to the “robotization of our planet.

Robotic Fascinations

Shaping the Cloud The Cloud of Facts is a collection of the current situation of applied robotics and how this field will evolve in the future. When approaching the task of classifying and making sense of the amount of information provided by the internet, three different parameters were applied to shape the cloud: time, field of application and anatomy of the referenced robots. When making reference to time, the facts were classified depending on the moment in which each robot could start being in use. Many facts were related to ongoing research and current innovations, while other made reference to utopian futures of complete automation of cities. Thus generating a predictive timeline for robots. The second parameter refers to the layer of the city that would be affected by the implementation of each fact. For this, the base of layers was taken from the Anato-

my of the Habitat graph developed as part of City Protocols in IAAC, in which the city is depicted and described as a sum of layers: environment, infrastructure, nodes, applications and people. Lastly, the third parameter taken into account was the robotic evolution slider that describes the anatomy of the robots and their inherent characteristics.

With the outcomes of the Cloud of Facts it is possible to identify the main sectors of robotic applications, ranging from medicine to robotic farming, from car industry to robotic entertainment, from domestic robotic to robotic construction. Following the Neufert precision, an extended catalog of current and future applications is developed to visualize the potentials of robots and their impacts in the city.

3.

Catalogue of Applications A collection of ongoing and future applications

robot /'rəʊbɒt/

noun

1. a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer.

3.1

What makes a robot?

48

Catalogue of Applications

There is no concrete definition for what actually makes robot, however there are some essential features that might help us to decide whether something is a robot or not; Sensing (Sensors): First of all a robot should be able to sense its surrounding using sensors (electronic devices that turns physical measurements into electrical signals). Sensors are small components that are embedded into robots and give information them in order later to react. Intelligence (Software): Every robots needs some ‘smarts’. This feature is given by programmers who give this smart to robots, and robot physically needs to has a part that makes it possible to receive this program which is called controller.

Catalogue of Applications

49

Reacting (Actuators): Robots should be moving. Either one part or more than one part of it should be able to change location. Ability of a robot to change its dimension is measured by a system called degree of freedom. Every single part of robot can have maximum of 6 degree of freedom. Energy: Every robot needs to be able to power itself. Power supply most commonly is provided by electricity but depending on what the task of robot is, there might be other energy sources to use such as solar powered, battery powered etc.

In the best tradition of science fiction, speculations were depicted as future city scenarios - from utopian to dystopian, from near to far future, from auto-, robo-, nano- to geno-. The visions allow the development of unique and cutting edge narratives about urban scenarios on existing conditions.

The Workshop Robotic City is the central topic of a seminar taught in the Master of City and Technology of IAAC in collaboration with The Why Factory. From the 25th to the 29th of April, as support to the seminar, a workshop was organized as an exchange opportunity between students from IAAC and TU Delft’s Actualities Workshop. During those 5 days, the students worked together to develop a collective Library of Robotic Speculations and 30 visions about the future of applied robotics in the city.

In the city on demand, the wish of inhabitants is the most important parameter. The city is not a traditional collection of flats, but it is a pattern of rooms of modular size which can be adjusted according to what people want. New boxes are supplied by cranes and robotic arms to the systems. The city also adjusts the transportation based on movement of people and allows people to move around with more convenience in the neighbourhood.

The next level of the consumerist society, where the entire city is based on an efficient structure to provide goods in an efficient way. The consumerist city does not need harbours, shops or supermarket; everything is delivered directly at home. A robotic layer of the city helps good and material to flow around the city without using the transportation infrastructure, hence making it more available for the citizens.

The City of Production Flows What if the farms keep shifting?

re fut u

ar ne

Industrial and agricultural production determines the structure of the city. This city will have atomised conveyors served by robots which are integrated into the streets, creating one gigantic inhabited factory. Crops are planted in the countryside on the conveyor and slowly conveyed to the city, reaching its center exactly when they are grown enough to be harvested. Precise aiming of the production minimizes additional transportation and optimizes the land use.

A light, transparent layer of solar panels acts as a cloud floating over the city, adapting to channel and make use of the wind fluxes.

Nano scale robots are building material itself that creates habitat of people based on their ‘demand / quantity of robot’ algorithm. Ownership of land is over, here you can own robotic material that shapes your living environment. City is a continuous surface of this nano scale robotic building material. Whenever a change in location or form is necessary, material owners can enter the requirements to the central system and move with their robots.

The ultimate robotic city need neither Earth nor human anymore. Robots build robots and the sun gives the whole energy. Through the space it randomly grows, as more robots, more access and energy surface are needed. Waste is as always, being a mass outer surface of the city.

In robotic city there is a skin developed around the buildings which acts as a shield to protect the interior from pollution. This skin is formed by a fusion of robotic and the biotechnology of microalgae. A symbiotic relation is developed between the nature and the city where the skin of the building the c02 and acid from the polluted air and converts it into nutrition for the trees.

Human beings are only survived 5 years after bees extinct, three quarters of the plants on earth rely on bees’ pollination. All species are connected and every links are irreplaceable. Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play. Sukkah, Biblical in origin, is an ephemeral, elemental shelter, here in the future city, is about the universal idea about transience and permanence, and at the same time deeply rooted and expressions of changing seasons. In the future city with the help of robotic technology, the city will be maximum biodiversity and link the broken eco-chain.

Outro Towards a Robotic Metabolism

Robo-metabolism Taking into account that metabolism refers to the “(‌) the sum total of the technical and socio-economic processes that occur in cities, resulting in growth, production of energy, and elimination of wasteâ€?1 When reflecting upon a robotic metabolism, it is possible to envision a new type of civilization growing around information and advanced technology. This is a revolution that is already happening today with the implementation of smart systems in the cities, which allow the sensing of the urban environment and the possibility of gathering big amounts of data. As part of the robotic ecosystem, the network of sensors existing today allow robots to evolve towards a more autonomous existence, where they can rely on the data in the cloud to act inside the city.

Outro

If this scenario is taken further, the availability of data and the conformation of a robotic ecosystem will enhance the capabilities of robots, thus generating conditions for robots to be reduced size and at the same time communicating with each other to be grouped in swarms that act together. With the challenge of conceiving a Robotic City, the visions were produced to evaluate the future possibilities and impossibilities of the appearance of robots in the city. The visions produced were generated by imagining without boundaries how robots can change the way cities are conceived today. In this way, they are not directly related to the production of architecture but to all possible applications in the layers and systems that compose the city.  The automation of the city questions the role of humans when robots start replacing everyday tasks and activities, but also many of the robots are imagined to allow

humans more control over their environment. However, the implementation of robots in the city that become public commons start to question the current perceptions of ownership and safety in the city. In some of the visions, robots are introduced as self-sufficient houses that allow an efficient living. In others, the theme of mobility was tackled referring to cities in constant movement that tackle the issue of mandatory mobility and modes of transportation used today. When tackling issues like self-growing and adaptable systems that are made possible by the implementation of technology the questions veers toward how controllable these systems would be.
