Welcome Message from our Chairman Nóta ónár gCathaoirleach Welcome to our fourth festival We are delighted to welcome all the choirs, adjudicators and audiences to our fourth festival. Visitors to Mayo can experience fine scenery, great people and a relaxed pace of life. With so many new tourist-related developments in our county in recent years, it’s a great place to visit. Mayo is a central point on the new Wild Atlantic Way - a driving route stretching from Donegal in the North, to Cork in the South, along the spectacular Atlantic coast. Easy access from most European destinations via Ireland West International Airport, Knock, and direct rail connections from Dublin allows visiting choirs and guests to enjoy one of the most beautiful parts of our country. I would like to thank the various committees county-wide who make this venture possible every year, and in particular our dedicated executive committee. I would also like to thank each and every one of our volunteers, who make up this huge organisational team. Of course the key factor in staging this festival in Mayo is the strong choral tradition and the help from all choirs from Mayo who have been tremendous in assisting with the arrangements for the visiting choirs. We look forward to September when we will host the Canadian Orpheus Male Voice Choir during their tour of the West of Ireland, and to the first weekend in October when Mayo hosts the Irish Association of Barbershop Singers (IABS). This is all testament to the hard work put in by our committee, backed by the good will and support that’s in Mayo. The realisation that Mayo has the facilities for hosting such events has made the dream of a Mayo International Choral Festival a reality. Is Feidir Linn’ - our motto in Gaelic, meaning ‘Yes We Can’! From the very outset Mayo County Council, Fáilte Ireland, LEADER (South West Mayo Development Company), Mayo Choirs, Mayo Lions Clubs, the Mayo Association, Mayo accommodation providers and our many friends and local businesses, have all been very enthusiastic and supportive in their response to the initiative. Castlebar Municipal District have been particularly helpful this year as have Castlebar Town Council in previous years. Our neighbouring counties have also showed great interest, and I’d like to thank the Sligo International Choral Festival, the Derry International Choral Festival and also the Kiltimagh Choral Festival, Mayo, for their support. In particularly like to congratulate Joe Kelly on his many years driving the Sligo International Choral Festival, and we wish him health, happiness and relaxation as he retires from the role. We do hope to see you at one of the events during the festival. Edward (Eamonn) Horkan, Chairman, Mayo International Choral Festival

Welcome Message from Festival Director Nóta ó Stiúrthóir na Féile Welcome and thank you
Declan Durcan, Festival Director
I’m delighted to be part of the fourth festival as it goes from strength to strength. Each year brings something new and this year we have our first visiting choir from Portugal - it’s very encouraging. It’s also heartening to see our festival extending to embrace all of Mayo, and this year, another first, there is a choral concert in Crossmolina, (in addition to Ballina, Ballintubber, Castlebar, Newport, Swinford and Westport). We continue to acknowledge Mayo’s heroes and heroines of song and music, with a fascinating presentation by Anne Chambers on the life and times of Margaret Burke Sheridan. I’d like to thank all the team that make up this complex network of volunteers, driven by their love of music and the betterment of where we live. Our committee has worked hard behind the scenes to coordinate it all and make it happen, as have all the choirs in Mayo who are big supporters of the festival. Local media - press, radio, TV and online also plays a big part and we are grateful. We acknowledge the assistance from Mayo County Council, our main festival sponsor and Castlebar Municipal District. Fáilte Ireland has again been very supportive and a big thank you goes to the accommodation providers who supported our syllabus. It is heartening to see so much support coming from National and Local Authorities and their realisation that events like these are so important to each community in terms of their cultural and economic values. A big thank you to all venue providers, the various community groups, and to our 100+ volunteers and our suppliers. Finally a big thank you to all our many sponsors who continue to see the current and potential benefit of this festival. 3
I wish to take this opportunity to especially welcome all of the visiting choirs to Mayo, in particular, those choirs and guests who are travelling from abroad this year. There is also a strong neighbourly welcome to all the choirs and their followers travelling from the four provinces in Ireland, needless to say, you are all welcome to celebrate in this shared love of singing. The Mayo International Choral Festival is now in its fourth year and it is very encouraging to see the festival continue to develop. I particularly want to congratulate the organisers on their achievements to date, and to thank the participants that continue to support the festival as it grows and prospers. This festival is testament to the strong passion toward singing and music in County Mayo and I again thank the choirs who have helped in making the festival such a success. I hope you all have a good experience from your time in Mayo and most importantly, that you enjoy these choral performances. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, TD. It gives me great pleasure to welcome visitors to Ireland and particularly to Mayo. It’s encouraging to see choirs from the USA, Portugal, Scotland and England, as well as from all parts of Ireland. I hope every visitor gets a chance to enjoy other aspects of Mayo, in between resting their voices! Mayo has lots to offer tourists and is a key location on the ‘Wild Atlantic Way’- the longest defined coastal drive in the world (2500km), that embraces the coastline from Donegal in the north to Cork in the south. It’s a route where land and sea collide, where untamed beauty abounds. Mayo is a great base to discover the northern or southern routes - or both because there’s so much to do and see. We are delighted that yet another new cycling and walking greenway has opened at the start of this month in Mayo, linking Castlebar to the National Museum of Country Life, at Turlough. It’s a lovely route, and meanders alongside a river and open plains and wooded areas. I congratulate the festival organisers, who again this year, continue to put Mayo on the world choral map. Michael Ring, TD, Minister of State, Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. On behalf of Mayo County Council it gives me great pleasure to extend a hearty welcome to all visiting choirs, and a thank you to the local choirs for making this superb festival happen each year. Mayo County Council is delighted to be associated with the event and I would encourage visitors to, during their stay, sample some of the other attractions in Mayo that we are very proud of. Mayo is arguably the most vibrant outdoor adventure hub of Ireland and boasts clean, fresh air, cycle tracks (including the Great Western Greenway), hills, mountains, lakes and rivers, all waiting to be explored! In addition we are proud of our performance facilities, including theatres and arts centres in Ballina, Belmullet, Castlebar, Claremorris and many other fine performance venues around the county. Our churches are wonderful buildings, and it’s heartening to see the cooperation between all the community groups. A new ‘Mayo Day’ took place at the start of May this year, and is now in the calendar for the start of May each year. For all information on Mayo, visit www.mayo.ie The strength of this festival is it’s spread across several communities in Mayo - long may it continue. Congratulations to the committee and volunteers, the choirs in Mayo and the many sponsors. Damien Ryan, Cathaoirleach Mayo County Council 4

Margaret Burke Sheridan The Woman Behind The Voice As part of Mayo International Choral Festival honouring Mayo’s heros and heroines in song and music, the festival is proud to host this presentation, at Mayo County Library, Castlebar, 8pm, Thursday 21st May. Free Adm. Anne Chambers author of the biography 'La Sheridan Adorable Diva' presents: 'Margaret Burke Sheridan - The Woman Behind the Voice' with music and memorabilia of the Castlebar-born Prima Donna.
MARGARET BURKE SHERIDAN For decades the true story of Castlebar-born prima donna Margaret Burke Sheridan lay hidden beneath a layer of anecdotal stories, speculation and deliberate invention, much of it contributed to by the Diva herself. She was an only child and an orphan, she implied. She was ‘discovered’ by Marconi. She had love affairs with Puccini and Toscanini. The Pope wanted to make her a countess. An Italian aristocrat, whom she had rejected, shot himself in the opera house as she sang on stage. Melodramatic stuff: but what was truth and what was invention? Her centenary in 1989 had brought her memory out of oblivion and as a fellow townswoman, I was asked to write ‘something’ to mark the event. That ‘something’ turned into a three year’s of travel and research in archives throughout Italy, in England and Ireland. But despite the copious records I garnered about her artistic career, the story behind the voice continued to remain illusive until, fellow Mayoman Garech Browne, solved my dilemma, when he opened the door to a room in his house crammed with cardboard boxes containing the personal papers and effects of ‘Maggie from Mayo’. And what a treasure-trove it turned out to be. Letters and telegrams from her background and childhood in Castlebar, Eccles Street in Dublin, to London and right through her remarkable operatic career in Italy, to her final years in Dublin. Letters from her many mentors, such as the Nationalist parliamentarian, TP O’Connor, from Marconi, from numerous admirers and friends, all threw light on the path which had taken her from the stage of the Town Hall in Castlebar to operatic glory. Invitations to ‘at homes’ from famous English society hostesses as well as dozens of calling cards from titled Italian admirers in Milan and Rome, confirmed her celebrity status. A 1921 New Year’s Eve dinner menu from the Palace Hotel, Milan, which offered a desert named ‘Fruits a la Sheridan’ bore testimony to her nomadic lifestyle, as did the numerous hotel and restaurant bills she had accumulated over the space of 40 years. One by one the cardboard boxes laid bare the intimate life of the diva - without her operatic costume and make-up. Numerous medical and pharmacy receipts, empty nasal sprays and decongestants, suggested a reason for the limited number of her operatic appearances and for her
abrupt retirement from the stage. Receipts from haute couture salons in Milan, Paris and London confirmed the ‘star’ persona she presented off-stage. Contracts and agreements with agents, managers, opera houses and recording companies; telegrams and greeting cards from famous names; the tissue paper theatre posters, one announcing her dramatic debut as Mimi in Rome in 1918: contracts with La Scala: her own stage directions for Madama Butterfly and Andrea Chenier; photographs of her as Butterfly, Mimi, Desdemona, Maddalena and the many other roles she made famous; photographs of happy interludes with friends in the lakeside paradise of Bellagio; on tour in Italy with operatic colleagues. Family photographs and letters from her brother Paddy, her nephews John and David in Ottowa, her sister Hester and her niece Moira in England, blew apart her assertion that, as well as an orphan, she was an only child. From their correspondence it became apparent that a family feud had made her choose to ignore her immediate family during her career. The names and rhymes of school friends in Eccles Street in her 1909 autograph book. A rosary beads, numerous religious quotations copied in her florid handwriting, with which I was to become so familiar, confirmed the loneliness and lack of confidence that lay beneath the prima donna persona she presented in public, during her dreary retirement in Dublin. Hidden deep in one of her handbags perhaps the most poignant artefact of all, part of a telegram with the words ‘ti adoro’ above the name of the one love in her life as well as an anguished unsent letter telling him she could never become the lover of a married man. Star treatment in 1924 on the front page of the prestigious Italian arts newspaper Melodrammatica. In the carefully folded copy preserved among her papers, her photograph, dressed in the magnificent gown given to her by Puccini for her triumphant role as Manon, together with rave reviews by Italian opera critics, further confirmed the dizzy heights she had reached in her career. Her cheque book (Coutts on the Strand) bank statements, royalties from HMV, showed a modest income and confirmed the reason why she needed the patronage of wealthy friends from the day she left Castlebar to the day she died. Her grave in Glasnevin was paid for by the American millionairess, Ruth Haughton Axe, the last in a long line of benefactors. Over the following months the contents of these cardboard boxes helped me complete the identikit of a my fellow townswoman, a wonderful, warm, witty, acerbic, complex woman and revealed the depth of loneliness, uncertainty and regret that lay hidden behind her brief but, oh so bright, time in the spotlight. ©Anne Chambers. 2015 7

Festival opening by Mr. Joe Kennedy: By any standards, Joe Kennedy has led a remarkable life. In 1953, at the age of 16, Joe left his native Doocastle, Co. Mayo to seek his fortune across the Irish Sea, singing at the dancehalls of London and Manchester before establishing a highly successful property development and construction firm in Manchester that became one of the largest in the UK. At one stage, Kennedy's employed over 800 staff, including countless Irish Men. But it is for his work as a philanthropist that Joe Kennedy is best known. He established the Kennedy Charitable Foundation and has contributed to numerous charitable causes in Ireland and England, and has been heavily involved in the Northern Ireland Peace Process. Joe joined the Board of Ireland West Airport Knock in January 2002 and is the current Chairman and also a Trustee, as he continues his strong advocacy for Western development whilst remaining true to his roots. 9

The Prizes
Duaiseanna
Again this year we have engaged Sculptor Ronan Halpin, Achill Island, County Mayo, to create the specially commissioned handmade awards. On the award for the premier competition (pictured right), singing is symbolised by two of the most common birds in Mayo - the Blackbird and the Song Thrush - who live side by side but also compete for habitat - referring to the competitive part of the festival. The tree is symbolic of the yew tree. The Irish for Mayo is ‘Mhaigh Eo’, which means ‘plain of the Yews’. The triangular shape on both awards is similar to a metronome, and the celtic symbols are deviations of music notation.

Claire Barnett-Jones, UK Former synchronised swimming champion, Claire, felt that she was more suited to the stage, and gave up the early morning training sessions and nose clips, in favour of later evenings and ball gowns. Claire started music as an instrumentalist and she learnt a variety of instruments, with the more unusual being the banjo and sousaphone. Her singing life started in a Women’s Barbershop Chorus where she went on to be the National Youth Chorus Conductor, and now she judges barbershop contests across the world in her ‘spare’ time, and is a recognised adjudicator for the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers. A repetitive strain injury resulted in a break from instrumental playing, and Claire pursued classical singing as an undergraduate at 26
Birmingham Conservatoire. Since then she has performed as a Soloist at the BBC Proms, and worked with opera companies such as Birmingham Opera, and Scottish Opera. Her highlight roles include; Zita in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi at Birminghmam Conservatoire, and creating the role of Alto 1 in Stockhausen’s Mittwoch aud Licht with Graham Vick and Birmingham Opera Company for the Cultural Olympiad. She is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music as a Masters student with Sarah Walker, and with be continuing onto the Royal Academy Opera in September.
