We are now entering in to our sixth International Choral Festival and this year it has attracted 38 choirs to participate. The county of Mayo will see over one thousand four hundred singers over the few days which should all contribute to the magic, glamour and beauty of the county. We welcome you all warmly together with our adjudicators and audiences and invite you to enjoy the sights

and the atmosphere which abounds at festival time. Over the years we have had choirs from Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, the United States and Wales. This year choirs from Bulgaria, England, Russia and Sweden will add to the International flavour of the event. Thanks to all of the Mayo committees and choirs for their efforts to support the festival and we will have

I wish to thank the many choirs who are participating in what is now the sixth Mayo International Choral Festival. It has undoubtedly become a social gathering each year in the closing days of May to those who know it best. This is a special festival for me, as it has closely mirrored my own tenure as Taoiseach since 2011 when I launched the festival website in November of that year - time has certainly passed very quickly. I understand that many choirs and guests have travelled from abroad this year and please accept a warm welcome to not only Ireland, but also to County Mayo - the beating heart of the Wild Atlantic Way. There is also a strong welcome to all the choirs and their followers travelling from all over Ireland. Whatever distance you have travelled, you are all welcome

to celebrate in this shared love of singing. As always, I congratulate the organisers of Córfhéile Idirnáisiúnta Mhaigh Eo on their achievements, as well as their ongoing professionalism. To the participants, I hope you get to enjoy all that Mayo has to offer, such as the Castlebar to Turlough Greenway, the excellent walking paths at Lough Lannagh with the ever scenic backdrop of Croagh Patrick and the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life. The festival is testament to the strong passion toward singing and music in Co. Mayo. I hope you all have a wonderful experience and most importantly, that you get to enjoy the choral performances of 2017.

Congratulations to all for reaching your 6th year, and I applaud the untiring efforts of the organisers in staging so many events throughout Mayo during the weekend and indeed outside the festival dates. It is a great opportunity to showcase Mayo and the region. There are many returning choirs that take part each year and this is testament to the popularity of this event and the attraction of

the region, it’s people and the plentiful activities on offer. I would particularly like to extend a big welcome to the International choirs and travelling guests and also to audiences who travel from abroad. Finally, I compliment all Mayo choir members who are strongly behind this festival. Michael Ring, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development

concerts / events in Ballina, Ballinrobe, Ballintubber, Ballyhaunis, Castlebar, Newport and Westport. Please come and join us, in particular at the Gala concert, 8pm, 27th May in the GMIT, Castlebar. This year we acknowledge the unique contribution of the Mayo Musical Maestro for 2017, Ballinrobe’s Courtney Kenny who will be lauded at an event in his native Ballinrobe on Wednesday, May 24th at 8pm.

Can I urge you all to join us for this special event. A sincere thank you to Mayo County Council, Fáilte Ireland and all of our sponsors, as identified in our publications and online. We could not proceed without your support. Finally, I wish, on my own behalf and on behalf of the hard-working Executive Committee, to again welcome you all and hope that you enjoy the event.

Declan Durcan Festival Director

Welcome choirs, adjudicators and audience members - this year we have a very large choir entry and I thank our new Chairman Frank Murray, the Executive Committee and the hundreds of volunteers and Mayo choir members who all assist in piecing together this huge organisational jigsaw. I’d also like to pay tribute to the founding member, Edward Horkan, who, after five years, tried to step down and was duly elected Honorary President! We hope the new role will allow him to enjoy the festival without the massive workload that he has put into the festival over the years. It’s been very busy since last May. After a novel launch on Lough Corrib in September, we played host to a visiting choir from Wales who stayed and performed in Mayo upon our invitation in October. Similarly we welcome a choir

from Holland this October, and we are in touch with two choirs from the USA who are considering a visit to Mayo at Easter in 2018. The great response to this new publication ‘Mayo Sings’ - an innovative marketing and sponsorship initiative, is testament to the level of good will towards the festival, and we thank all who have supported and helped with it.

We are currently putting together a five-year festival development plan which will be launched later this year, with input from all stakeholders, from choirs, to businesses, to sponsors, to audiences and volunteers. Do feel to free to contribute by emailing info@mayochoral.com We are also at the early stages of forming an association with the Sligo International Choral Festival to further strengthen our aims and to highlight the region as a lively centre of choral excellence and the arts, and to remind people that it’s a great destination to visit. We look forward to seeing you at one of the many events all of which are open to a public audience. Declan Durcan, Festival Director

A Mayo Event Imeacht Mhaigh Eo

Positive Future An Todhchaí

It gives me great pleasure as the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council to extend a very warm welcome to all visitors to Mayo - be they audience members or members of choirs. I want to thank and congratulate the organising committee and all the volunteers who run this festival and it is so good to see that it is a Mayo event that includes many towns and villages all over the county. The festival is

a showcase of Mayo to the International visitors and reminds those of us living in Mayo what a great county it is, with great venues, facilities and attractions, but most of all with very friendly and talented people. I’m looking foward to attending many of the events. Al McDonnell, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council

I am delighted to see the positive development of the festival from when we started back in 2012. With well over 35 choirs taking part this year it bodes well for the future. From day one I realised my vision for the festival was dependant on so many people pulling together as a ‘meitheal’ and I am so proud to see hundreds of people now involved in the festival from all over the county, working tirelessly to make it all happen.

A strong Festival Director and Executive Committee were also part of the essentials and this has continued from the very first year. I congratulate the new Chairman Frank Murray and his team and I look forward to attending the events this year in his company.
