MAYSAM GHAFFARI

37 Design Research: Component Aggregation Helicoid Surface In this project I investigated component aggregation and space organization to form a continuous space parametrically. Through this investigation I used different techniques such as unfolding, bending mirroring, twisting and triangulation in order to build a physical model, using laser cut machine. I was inspired by helicoids forms because of the continuity in space and walk-able connected surfaces which are also structure. These investigations not only helped me to understand surface transformations and form generation, but also expand my knowledge about minimal surface in mathematics. I have also presented some concepts for the future development of these ideas in architecture.

STEP1: defining a parametric helicoids and trimming the edges in order to attach them together base on triangle, rectangle or pentagon. Each of these typology rules will generated different space organization. Step 2: Construction surfaces: this basic construction surfaces are generated by triangulating the base geometry created in previous step. Step3: unfolding: the algorithm unfolds the triangulated surfaces for creating a cutting pattern for laser cut. Step4: construction: this stage involve bending and joining components base one the trimmed edge on the first step.

In these studies I have tried to understand form making- processes in biology. These concepts can be used and tested in the development of my future studies in architecture. I am interested in surface pattern and organizational complexity integrated with structure.
