An Update to the Community

A Message from the Superintendent Winter in Ohio can be challenging due to snow and icy conditions leading to several days out of school. Spring is around the corner and our students are back in the classroom and excited to learn. Currently we have missed 4 days of school due to weather conditions. We are forgiven 5 of those days so currently we have no days to make up. As we enter the month of March, the 10th grade Ohio Graduation Test or O.G.T is upon us. The O.G.T test is the accountability measure in high schools across the state. We have worked very hard preparing our students for success on that test and I am very confident that we will achieve excellence. I am very pleased with the accomplishments of our students not only in the classroom but also in the many activities that they do outside of the classroom. Our students are achieving at high levels in the things that they do and I want to congratulate them for their success. I am very proud when I go to various meetings around the county and state and people are talking about what is happening at Maysville. The Maysville Local School district hosted a school safety forum on February 7th. The event was well attended and I want to thank everyone who participated in this event. I also would like to invite the community to attend future forums hosted by the District. We will announce those dates soon.

Congratulations to all Spelling Bee participants! The Maysville Schools District Spelling Bee was held January 8, 2013. Students in grades 4-8 participated in grade level bees and building bees in order to qualify for the district bee. The grade level winners are: Grade 4 - Hannah Tonneman, Grade 5 - Steele Shreve, Grade 6 - Aaron Robinson, Grade 7 - Marissa Meredith, and Grade 8 - Wesley Wiseman. The Grand Champion is eighth grader Matthew Pitcock, who correctly spelled the winning word, vaporize. On March 16, Matthew will represent our district at the 2013 Scripps College of Communication Regional Spelling Bee in Athens, OH. The champion of the Regional Spelling Bee will represent the area at the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Good Luck, Matthew! We’re proud of you!

Fit Kids’ Workout! It may be chilly outside, but it's heating up in the third grade classrooms during inside recess as the students are taking advantage of our new Fit Kids' Workout videos and balance boards! The third graders would like to send a huge thank you to The Muskingum County Health Department (Kris Bell and Kylie Jones) for helping to keep them active during inside recess. A grant made it possible for these ladies to purchase balance boards, videos, books and listening center materials for our classrooms to encourage health and fitness.

BUDDY OR BULLY The fifth grade students at Maysville Elementary participated in classroom discussions of Bullying. They were given statistics and valuable information revolving around the types of bullying and the potential lasting effects that can occur when bullying is not understood or stopped. Bullying can take on many forms: • • •

Direct bullying---physical and verbal Indirect bullying---gossip and rumor Cyber bullying---any electronic device, including gaming systems, that aim to threaten or bully by way of words.

After the discussions were over, each child was given writing prompts to continue to educate, and to be a reminder that bullying is a serious and harmful form of violence that can cause long term problems and depression. Mrs. Warne and Mr. Stanton created a bulletin board to foster the Elementary School’s commitment to being a bully free school. The Motto being: BUDDY OR BULLY

Second Grade Students Creating Power Point Presentations In Keyboarding class, second grade students were very busy the second nine weeks creating Power Point Presentations about the animals brought by The Wilds to the elementary on October 25th. Eight animal species from the “Wilds on Adventure” provided students with up-close encounters. In Mrs. Birchfield’s class the 2nd grade students from each classroom were divided into eight groups and they selected one of the animals from the program. Students researched their animal, and collaborated together so each group member could add at least one fact about the animal to a Power Point slide. Pictures of their animal were researched and also added to the slide, adjusting as needed to create an attractive slide. Group member’s names were added and font features were explored. Slides were combined per classrooms and an overall design was added. When students returned from Christmas break, each class was able to present their facts and slide during keyboarding class. Slide transitions were voted on by each class and added to the presentation. Students are very proud of their informative Power Point Presentations. These are available to view and download on Mrs. Birchfield’s web page at http://www.maysville.k12. oh.us//site/Default.aspx?PageID=2641, and have also been shared on Maysville’s Facebook page.

Heard in the lab... • •

When asking 1st graders if they knew what software was, a couple of replies I received was “something soft that you wear” and “like pajamas.” On several occasions we have heard kindergartners helping classmates navigate on a website telling them to “squirrel down” instead of “scroll down.”

Pathways to Engineering Luncheon The annual Pathways to Engineering luncheon was held on February 11th, where area guidance counselors and administrators could talk with the Pathways students about this great program. The Pathways to Engineering program is a partnership between Zane State College and Mid-East Career and Technology Centers. Maysville 1st Grade Celebrates the 100th day of School! In our primary classrooms, counting the days of school has become an important math class ritual. Students count each day of school, looking for number patterns on the calendar, and counting the days by twos, fives, and tens. Many classes celebrated the 100th Day with special activities centered on the 100 theme. While the 100th Day is a lot of fun, it is important for our children to remember the mathematical significance of the celebration. Counting up to 100 for the 100th day of school gives us opportunities to investigate place value. By celebrating this day, we are helping our children to see that 100 is a special number in the Base 10 number system. Our 1st grade students did this by participating in some of these 100th day activities: 1. Making cereal necklaces with 100 pieces 2. Reading Pigs in Hiding, searching for 100 pigs in the classroom and then placing them all in numerical order 3. Sorting 100 objects into groups 4. Writing activity: If I had $100..... 5. Draw a picture of what I would look like at 100 years old 6. Made t-shirts with 100 items glued on it 7. Read several 100 days of school books 8. 100’s day snack mix which contained 10 pieces of 10 different items 9. Students were asked to stay quiet for 100 seconds and hop 100 times 10. Writing activity: I wish I had 100_____, I wish I had 100 _____, but I am glad I do NOT have 100 _____! The picture is of students placing the 100 hiding pigs in order to 100!

Extended Care We have been very blessed with a donation of dress up clothes from one of our students’ sister. The girls love to play dress up and pretend they are princesses, having tea parties and just twirlling around the room. We are looking forward to Spring and being able to go outside to play on the new playground.

Kindergarten Students Learn About Recycling Kindergarten students received a presentation on Recycling this month from Wanda Schaad of the Southeastern Ohio Joint Solid Waste Management District. The students learned about the different types of materials that can be recycled and listened to a story about recycling. Wanda brought several examples of items that can be recycled to show the children. The Kindergarten students really enjoyed the presentation!

Dollar General Supports Reading at Maysville in a Big Way “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” –Dr. Seuss Dollar General – You made a difference in the lives of our students! Thanks to the generous donations of Dollar General, Maysville Elementary was able to purchase 3,000 books through Reading Is Fundamental (RIF). Although they have been a past sponsor of this program, matching government funds, they believed so much in the importance of putting books in our student’s hands that when this program was removed from government funding, they stepped up and found a way to help us purchase 3 new books to send home with each child. We can’t thank Dollar General enough for helping us enrich our children’s lives by putting books in their hands and homes!

The High School Aspirations Team The High School Aspirations Team is a combined team of students and teachers working together to improve our school. The Aspirations team gives the student body a voice on school issues. Student voice is an important part of making positive changes in our school community. On Feb. 14, the High School Aspirations team met with two consultants from the Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations, Mickey and Susan. They came to see what we have accomplished as a team and to teach us how to grow as leaders in our school. Our group uses Aspirations tools such as online surveys called My Voice to identify areas of concern. The results of the survey lead the team to choose targets for improvement, such as the removal of the 50% floor from summative grades. Our team works together to develop solutions that provide students with support to help them succeed as they take responsibility for their learning.
