Valentine's Day Plans & Expectations On Valentine’s Day, many girls have idea that they’ll be spending the day with their loved one. They hope to receive flowers, chocolates and even a huge teddy bear. Some guys plan on going out to eat, getting candy, and just having a day with the person they’re with. Sweethearts are out shopping for things they think their partner will enjoy this year. Some purchase or receive just candy and maybe a quiet night in; others get bouquets of flowers, chocolates, jewelry-- the works. This year, just like every year, not everyone is doing something for Valentine’s Day. They either don’t have a loved one, or they or the person they’re with has a job and is too busy to celebrate the day of love.Although some who are without someone this year, no matter the reason, are still going out with friends because it’s a day to celebrate. It’s nice to be with someone, no matter who it may be, that loves you. They want to celebrate, too, and this year, hopefully, it’ll be better.

The Gruesome Truth Behind Valentine's Day Valentine’s Day is a day to spend with the one you love... yet the history of Valentine’s Day is a story of imprisonment and death. The story suggests that St. Valentine, the day's namesake, may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl-- possibly his jailor's daughter-- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and-- most importantly-- romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps

thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France. In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. If your sweetheart thinks Valentine's Day is too sappy or mushy, try telling them the tale of the first Valentine... If they'd rather escape from Skyrim jail than declare their love, you may find them more receptive to the idea of buying you candy and cards after they hear this bloody and romantic tale. -- Sam Grubbs, 12th grade
Review: Romeo & Juliet “Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona is where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break new mutiny, Where civil bloods make civil hands unclean, From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life…” This is part of the beginning of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare's classic tragedy of two teenagers who would give anything to be together. Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet meet at a feast held by the Capulets and fall for each other instantly. Though their families hate each other, they’re determined to be together. Romeo and Juliet is filled with romance, action, and tragedy; it’s the perfect combination. This is the first time I’ve actually read the play itself, and it was very different from watching the movie. Reading it gives you a chance to see everything differently. Plus, the vocabulary is a little unusual in our modern time. I enjoy the "strange" diction. This book is one everyone should read just for the experience. I’d give this play a 8.5 out of 10 (A-). -- Haven Labaki, 11th grade
Long Term Relationships Being in a long term relationship in high school isn’t always easy. It can be stressful and confusing at times, but for it to work, you need patience, understanding, honesty, faith and good times. The relationship required contribution from each person in order to work. Why is it that adults are always saying that high students do not know the meaning of love or even what it is? They should understand that regardless someone's age, they have feelings, too, and their feelings are valid. Students know how things make them feel, whether it be happiness,

sadness, anger, hate, or even love. Love does not have the same meaning to everyone. It comes in many different ways. I have been in a relationship since 7th grade and it has had its downfalls. It's also had good times too. If we have something bothering us then we talk about it, no matter the subject. Kody and I also have many laughs and fun times together even if we’re just sitting around the house all day. We both know that we are always here for each other and will continue to make many more wonderful memories and I couldn’t be any happier than I am now. -- Ashley Reed, 12th grade
Movie Rec: Warm Bodies If you hate typical happy-go-lucky Valentine’s romance movies and want to try something different and cool on Valentine’s Day, go see Warm Bodies. It's be a movie that you and your significant other, or just a group of good friends can enjoy together. Warm Bodies is not the typical romance movie, so anyone can enjoy it, even if they don't like typical romances. In the movie there is a classic forbidden romance with a new twist. The movie is about a zombie named R, rescuing and falling in love with Julie a human and daughter of the resistance. There are two types of zombies in the movie: bonies, the zombies without flesh, and regular zombies that have flesh but are dead. Warm Bodies, rated PG-13, is directed by Jonathan Levine. There is a combination of comedy and romance. I really enjoyed the flashbacks and the characters. It is based off Isaac Marison's novel, also called Warm Bodies, published in 2011. Although Warm Bodies has been compared to Twilight because of the undead love interest, the two movies couldn't be any more different. I dislike the Twilight movies and I really enjoyed this movie, but those who like Twilight aren't necessarily out of luck. For example, my sister likes Twilight and she thought Warm Bodies was awesome. The movie is kind of cheesy, but it's worth the money. (B+) -- Tori Himmelspach, 12th grade
What To Wear on a Date If you have a date you may be more nervous than you need to be, especially when it comes to the outfit you are going to wear. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when choosing your outfit. 1. Dress for the situation, and don’t want to over-dress. Try not to wear too much black: it’s favorable to wear a little bit of color because you don't want to look like you're in the way to a funeral! Don't wear a parka in the summer and don't wear short shorts in the winter. It's all about context. 2. Don't wear something too fitted or revealing, but don't wear something too loose either. Try to find a happy medium between "too tight" and "too loose". You'll know what's right for you.
3
3. Jeans and a nice top are also a great choice if you just don’t know what to wear; it gives a good opportunity to dress your outfit up or down. 4. Lastly, make sure you’re comfortable in your outfit. This is one of the most important things. Wearing something you feel uncomfortable in is never fun and you’ll be worrying about it the whole time. Don’t wear something you don’t like either; it’s important to dress like yourself so you don't give your date the wrong impression of who you are. The best way to find out what is right for you to wear is to just experiment. And remember, always have fun! -- Ashley Ferrell, 10th grade
What is Valentine's Day For? Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year devoted to love. Approximately 62% percent of Americans celebrate this special day every year. Of that number, about 15% are single women. So is Valentine’s Day really a day of love or is it just a way for stores to increase a profit? Every year people go out of their way to buy their loved ones or themselves a nice gift. Women go to drug stores and buy delicious chocolates, pick out massive stuffed animals, and order elegant flowers for themselves. Some even send these gifts to their places of employment so they can be "surprised" at work. Many women do this because they feel alone and desperate for love, but some do it because they feel it’s important to show love to oneself. Every year we see and hear people complaining about not having a valentine or getting a box of chocolates. Valentine’s Day is supposed to be about love, and love is not about gifts. If you are single, learn to be independent because buying yourself gifts may not be fulfilling in the end. Sometimes chocolates are nice, but being happy with yourself as you are is just a little more important. -- Erin Hastings & Natalie Paugh, 10th grade
