AN ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT MASTER BUILDERS GROUP TRAINING

In 2022, MBA Group Training will be making some changes to the way we attract apprentices to the industry. This year we will be transitioning away from directly employing apprentices, to focus more on industry training and attracting people to the ACT building and construction industry.

The MBA has employed apprentices and hosted them to local companies for more than 50 years. However, after reviewing current workforce attraction issues in the industry, the high level of ACT Government regulatory burden operating a GTO, and the financial viability of this model, we are changing the way we attract and support apprentices and employers in the local building and construction industry.

We will support all our current MBA employed apprentices to be re-employed, initially considering direct employment with current Host Employers. We will continue to support our apprentices throughout this process.

We will continue to operate and grow the ACT’s largest construction industry specialist training organisation, including training approximately 40% of the ACT’s carpentry apprentices.

We will also increase our workforce attraction programs, including visits to Canberra and regional schools, holding industry open days for school leavers, running preapprenticeship programs such as the Women in Civil Construction and Women in Trades programs, and supporting members to recruit and employ apprentices. If you have any questions or concerns about this information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the MBA by contacting canberra@mba.org.au or (02) 6175 5900.

CADET PROGRAMS

IN THE BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

Master Builders ACT members offer a range of cadet and work experience programs to enable students who are studying within the building and construction industry to gain hands-on work site experience.

The FDC Construction & Fitout Cadet Program gives students the chance to take what they’re learning in the classroom and apply it in a real-world setting. Built for students in the final years of their degree, students supplement university courses with time on site. The program is available to those studying Architecture and Design, Construction Management, Engineering and Quantity Surveying.

The cadetship is personal and individually tailored to each students’ goals, strengths and schedule.

FDC believe in strength through diversity and are about finding the right people for the job based on their skills, attitude, and credentials – no matter who they are. This year alone FDC have taken on 21 cadets Nationally and hope they go on to build rewarding careers at FDC.

Manteena cadet development program consists of taking on individuals with an interest in the construction industry and providing them with on-the-job learning, support, coaching and mentoring. Cadets and Project Administrators gain the opportunity to develop the skills and abilities to become a Project Manager, an Estimator or another senior role within the construction industry.

Cadets participate in a 3-4 year program rotation that provides them with an understanding of the different roles within the construction industry that work together to deliver successful projects. The program also provides practical reinforcement of the learning that the cadets are undertaking concurrently at University or through other training institutions.

Cadets gain practical experience across all essential areas of project delivery including estimating, finance, site management, contracts administration, project management, safety and quality.

Flexible working arrangements are offered to cadets, such as four-day working weeks or alternative part-time work around their study timetable with paid time off to attend exams in accordance with their Study Assistance Policy.

Within a successful 12-month period, cadets may be offered permanent employment at Rork Projects that aligns with their interests.

AMA Projects’ National Cadet Program aims to give students the flexibility to combine study, work and life, all while receiving on-the-job training. The cadet program provides students completing a construction-related degree with the chance to develop their skills and learn about all aspects of construction. Cadets undertake three rotations across the core areas of business – project management, contracts administration, site and safety management and estimating. Cadets are assigned a mentor to learn from at each stage of their rotation.

AMA offer cadets a full-time permanent position right from the beginning of their cadetship. Participants are guaranteed a position in their area of interest once they have completed their rotation over a 12-month period. This allows individuals to construct their career, their way, at an organisation that prioritises their employee’s professional development to grow their career from the day they commence.
