As the architectural profession has become better informed of the impact of their endeavors upon the planet, most have moved towards a greater responsibility in their work towards Sustainable Design. Sustainable Design or ESD (Ecologically Sensitive Design) accepts that the planet has a finite amount of natural resources from which to support the planets populations. Wise use of those resources, together with an intelligent approach to design to mitigate the Carbon affects of construction, material manufacture, transportation and destruction requires accountability from designers of their work and their design approach. Hyder consulting has embraced the principles of Sustainable Design and ESD since its inception and has become renown for its intelligent environmental approach to Design Briefs and for the production of ESD designs. Mike Barns, the company Director of Sustainability has been involved with environmental design since 1988. Sustainable Design principles’ have driven Hyder Architecture’s approach in the Middle East region with projects that have become signatures for environmental design. The scope of Hyder’s sustainability services extends from Master Planning, to Architectural Design, Urban Design, Environment, Utilities and Infrastructure, Construction Management and Project Management. The size of projects has extended from building design to large University multi storey buildings and regional infrastructure programs and design. Hyder’s commitment to Sustainability in the Middle East adds to the chorus of local and regional companies trying to make a difference.

BURJ KHALIFA Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Sustainability Review: Lessons learnt. Tall Tower Sustainability Study. http://www.ameinfo.com/220380.html http://www.ameinfo.com/133585.html http://www.burjkhalifa.ae/the-tower/worlds-tallesttowers.aspx

Project Developer: Emaar Properties, Dubai, UAE. Design Architects SOM, Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill Architecture. Architects of Record: Hyder Consulting Engineer of Record: Hyder Consulting Middle East Project Budget: US$8.0 billion. My Role: Pre and Post-Construction Review of Sustainability Design principles.

As Architects of Record

Introduction As Architects of Record for the Burj Khalifa, Hyder Consulting were responsible for taking the Developed Design and Technical Design documents from the designers to take the building to built completion. This required the production of a buildable set of documents (Construction Documents) that achieved Dubai Municipality certification and could be used by the contractor to construct the building. The Hyder responsibility bridged across Architecture, Structural Engineering, MEP and Sustainability. At the time the Burj project was first mooted, little cognizance of the importance of green design was acknowledged in the GCC area but unfolded regionally as this project proceeded.

Sustainability Review: Lessons Learnt. Tall Tower Sustainability Study.

OptimizatIon During the early design phase of the project the sustainability principles were set out and Hyder looked at how these could be optimized given the original designers sustainability intent and design concept principles. Effort was made to incorporate as many Sustainability opportunities as was possible within the contract constraints. This included the design, construction and procurement phases of the project across all disciplines. Detailed architectural design, landscape design, MEP, Interior Design, material use and procurement were all engaged to achieve an optimization of the sustainable principles for the project. Hyder undertook a LEED assessment study to test the Sustainability principles at the outset of design. These were tested again after the numerous design changes during and after construction completion to establish the credibility of the sustainability principles and to produce a model for Tall Tower Sustainability. I carried out that follow up review.

Hyder worked with the building designers to analyze the original design for LEED rating, optimizing aspects of the design as it unfolded to maximize the credit ratings. The initial SOM/AS+GG Architecture design acknowledged the desert flower as the design generator, regionalizing the project and offering cultural relevance to the people of the United Arab Emirates. The use of landscape material as a sustainability element continued through the developed and technical design and traversed MEP design with the reuse of air conditioning condensate to irrigate the landscaping plan. Solar hydro panels were employed to reduce energy consumption, and the facilities management plan optimizes recycling to reduce waste-to–landfill material. The Hyder Sustainability offering extended across site planning, assisting with building planning and design controls, construction techniques and building commissioning. The post commissioning sustainability review to validate original design and LEED rating intentions was also carried out to test the project design against current standards as a way of benchmarking the project for future reference and further tall building design to be undertaken by the company.

A project to raise the importance of Mangrove forests in the Middle East. Hotel Developer: TDIC, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Design Architects Holford Associates/Hyder Consulting. Architects of Record: Hyder Consulting My Role: Sustainability, and Project Delivery Manager to ensure clients requirements were met. Project Budget: US$0.78 billion.

Introduction A specialized building to provide for and celebrate the importance of an ecologically sensitive mangrove site. Site planning and optimization was carried out in the original project design and review to ensure that the site use, design and construction would minimally impact upon the biotic and environmental sensitivities of the adjacent mangrove forest. The project was proposed to raise the awareness of the importance of mangrove forest and to gain support for its continued survival as an ecologically important environmental asset of the region. A small number of mangroves were impacted to put the project in place and substantial replanting and new growth was carried out as a part of the project enabling works.

Sustainable Activities Although open water based activity is provided for in the design, the location of the project precludes over use of recreational craft. The recreational activity offering in the design allowed for minimal site penetration allowing the mangrove forest to be viewed from all rooms and restaurants but no uncontrolled physical access is possible. Substantial hydrographic studies were carried out to ensure that minimal environmental damage was impacted on the site during construction and as an operational consequence over the buildings life.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN Sustainability focuses not just on energy reduction, but as also on the selection of construction and finishes materials patients and staff are surrounded by on an everyday basis. The Interior design materials selected conform to the highest sustainable standards of low emitting products. A well-balanced lighting design, and the abundant use of natural light engage all areas of the hospital to ensure that occupant wellness is maintained at the highest level. Al Ain Hospital envisions a health system where patients and staff interact in a healing environment that embraces safer building products, clean air, reduced toxins, safe working practices, energy and water efficiency, and a commitment to public health demonstrated through implementing sustainable innovations. The hospital sees a system that recognizes the link between our choices and our health, and is continuously working to make that system a reality by creating a national movement in the UAE for environmental sustainability in health care. Al Ain will be seen as a model for future healthcare projects to come in the region and also around the world.

The building design will feature an array of unique attributes including the following: • Bed Tower – At the heart of patient care, the bed tower has the flexibility to meet shifting patient needs with universal rooms across all acute and intensive care settings. The flexible floor plates easily accommodate a variety of nursing requirements, as well as VIP and Royal Suites. Natural light filters into the bed tower, promoting a healing environment for patients and family while maintaining a professional environment for staff. An exterior skin featuring two layers of glass responds to the harsh Dubai climate, creating a comfortable interior environment by filtering sunlight and mitigating the heat of the sun. • Diagnostic and Treatment Base – The exterior expression of the four-story base of the building uses a more historical design approach, with a glass and stone curtain wall that draws inspiration from the more traditional forms of regional architecture. • Gardens – The adjacent Harvard Medical School Dubai Center and the University Hospital share a common landscape and garden architecture that supports healing. The gardens are connected to the University Hospital by water, which moves from the exterior of the building into interior spaces, creating a healing ambiance in both indoor and outdoor environments. • The Educational Armature – The interior organization of the hospital is designed to connect patients and their families to healthcare resources in addition to social and educational hospital programs. Most notably, the patient and community education center will enable patients and their families to make informed decisions about their healthcare condition, treatment options and maintaining healthy lifestyles.

World Class Design James Kingsbury, CEO of the University Hospital, commented, “This is great recognition and accomplishment for University Hospital. The design team is an exceptional group of experienced professionals that has managed to fulfill our inspirations to produce a significant, high quality piece of Architecture and Engineering that will match our high quality of care offerings and supports healing.” University Hospital is an icon of healthcare excellence, uniquely linking patient care with education. Ellerbe Becket designed the hospital with the highest standards in mind, incorporating the latest advances in care technology and healing in a building that fuses the best of modernism with the traditional architecture of the region.”

World Class University Delivery The coupling of a world class design architectural company with a substantial regional contractor operating under a Design and Build contract framework to deliver a very specific set of Clients Requirements within a tight time frame and capped project budget created a high pressure project environment in which to deliver this project. Although the design architects and contractors were experienced in such contractual contexts the time scale pressure and magnitude of the project, with consistent client/end user (EAA/NYU) involvement on a weekly basis required significant project management and project delivery skills from Hyder Consulting. As Lead Architect for the client my role was to ensure that the clients design and operational needs were being addressed and met and that all aspects of the Design Brief (Employers Requirements) were met and validated through a rigorous validation process. I also oversaw the significant Sustainability requirements, stemming from both the UAE requirements and NYU’s US based expectations.
