DAY OF VITAL IMPORTANCE INTERNATIONALLY’

International Drug Day is a day of vital importance globally & will be celebrated on June 26th, 2023. The day will be celebrated against drug abuse & illicit trafficking as well as the use of banned substances which is a growing concern, especially in North America. This is a day declared by the United Nations as the UN wanted a specific day for the sake of drug awareness amongst the masses, especially the youth. Making them fully aware of the health consequences of drug abuse & use of banned substances as well as the social challenges that they might have to face in society due to the use of illegal substances.

Drug awareness internationally is mainly for the sake of making people aware of how it becomes a challenge for their health & wellness. Obviously, the day is observed annually to determine actions and cooperation to check drug abuse and prevent drug trafficking. It is America’s number one public enemy & the numbers are growing fast as the day is supported by individuals, communities, and organizations that are working together to rehabilitate those that are suffering from drug abuse, also for the sake of making sure that no drugs are consumed or traded illegally. Something as simple as sharing useful resources or a piece of useful information that relates to drug abuse can obviously prevent someone from turning to harmful drugs.

What’s more important while shedding awareness is to know why people turn to illegal substances & harmful drugs! There should be many other alternatives and people must be advised and take into consideration the harmful effects of excessive usage of drugs & banned substances. All in all, they must know that it’s a menace to society.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL DRUG DAY:

The day has been in observation since the year 1989, i.e. exactly 34 years from today. Obviously, the late 80s and early 90s were the eras when the youth was globally destroyed due to the ill effects of drugs. The use of banned substances has caused many deaths in the United States, especially in the early 90s & most of them were found to be sudden deaths or due to drug overdose. Moreover, it also emerged as a growing concern amongst the celebrities who were found dead in their homes due to drug abuse & overdose of banned substances. The selection of the date, i.e. June 26th, was precisely something that commemorates Lin Zexu’s dismantling of the opium trade in Humen Town, Guangdong. The incident took place exactly on June 25th, 1839, i.e. just a few days before the first opium war in China.

The next big event in history, which is the backbone of the war against drugs, is the International Conference on Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking, which took place in Vienna in, Austria. On this day, June 26th, 1987, it was recommended in the conference that a day of global observance should be dedicated to Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking to strengthen the war against drug abuse & its challenges. A huge concern that relates to the Health & Wellness of the people who fall victim to this trap, as well as the many that relate to them, also becomes part of this. It has since become a huge concern for the health & wellness of thousands of people.

According to the World Drug Report of 2007, which was generated by the United Nations. The report stated that the revenues from illicit drug trafficking are a whopping $350 Billion.

HOW IS THIS DAY OBSERVED AMONGST THE MASSES?

A day which is highly dedicated to the health & wellness of the people is obviously a huge observation globally. Its impacts are already showing despite it being the 34th International celebration & observance of the day. On this day, the most common set of activities that takes place are campaigns, rallies, and poster making as part of drug awareness. The harm that an individual is causing to itself & the harm that is being caused to society is all highlighted on this prestigious day of global awareness.

The day is further observed in the form of key & concrete discussions that relates to the stats of the World Drug Report with key facts and the most practical solutions to the governments on how to overcome these issues. The victims of drug abuse, especially the ones who want to fight this curse, are also offered evidence-based prevention, care & full treatment. Thus, with mutual efforts by the different communities and the governments, the end of drug abuse & illicit trafficking can be envisioned. The vision is obviously a society that is more aware of health & wellness & all the things that are a massive hindrance with regards to Health & Wellness of people, whether physical or mental health. Drug abuse & use of banned substance is obviously a danger to both the physical as well as mental health of people.

People who are victims are also treated psychologically by trained psychiatrists who do their best to make them realize that you can win your life without the use of drugs & banned substances. Also, the dangers associated with illicit trafficking are highlighted fully with examples that are real life.
