SCOTT HAZELRIGG

CEO, KIDS CAN COMMUNITY CENTER

Robert Patterson’s daily focus is kids. As CEO of Kids Can Community Center, he and his staff work with children through early education and out-of-school programs — nearly 900 in all, according to the group’s 20202021 annual report.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NORTHSTAR FOUNDATION

One additional touchpoint, oneon-one mentoring, hasn’t fared as well. The program, which provides guidance and encouragement for 7- to 13-year-olds, had grown to 20 volunteer mentors by 2019, the limit Kids Can’s physical space would allow. But

MELISSA MAYO

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MENTOR NEBRASKA

the onset of the pandemic cut that number drastically. “We pretty successfully navigated COVID in our other programs the past two years, but I’ll be honest, we have not as successfully navigated the mentoring aspect,” he said. “We did try virtual and that kind of worked, but it was more of a Band-Aid and not a long-term solution. “Now that we’ve moved into a post-vaccinated world, we’re starting from scratch, rethinking things to get new mentors in here. Best practices and research show in the life of a young one, a caring adult who is nonjudgmental, provides support, provides encouragement or is just a listening ear is pretty impactful. One adult can be more impactful than a whole slew of other programs. To me, it’s really as simple as that.”

NICHOLE TURGEON

CEO, BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE MIDLANDS Across the state and around the country, the story is the same. Despite the demonstrated benefits of mentoring on youth and a relatively short time commitment in most programs, fears over the pandemic have severely impacted the number of adults willing or able to step up and give their time to impact a life. However, as January’s National Mentoring Month dawns, nonprofit leaders are undeterred in their efforts to recruit volunteers, stressing the critical nature of mentoring on youth outcomes. “The transition coming out of the pandemic has created some very challenging obstacles for everyone,” said Deb Denbeck, president and CEO of Partnership 4 Kids, serving 3,100 children and youth in 16 Omaha schools. “It’s not only recruiting volunteers but reengaging KIDS CAN COMMUNITY CENTER

young people, because isolation has really done a number on everybody, particularly our youth.” Partnership 4 Kids mentors provide reading buddies, instruction and direction for students in pre-K through high school and beyond. The time investment is low — just a couple hours per month — but the impact is lifelong. “I think sometimes people are fearful they don’t know how to interact with young people. They don’t think they would be a good mentor,” Denbeck said. “But I can tell you, what makes the biggest difference in a mentor are the ability to listen, to provide guidance, to meet young people where they’re at and being positive. Our young people need people to help guide them, it’s really critical.”

The Impact

The impact of a mentor can play a substantial role in a young person’s long-term academic and professional success. As a national report, “The Mentoring Effect” noted, young people at-risk of not completing high school, but who had a mentor,” were 55% more likely to go to college than those who didn’t. Mentored youth were also 81% more likely to participate in sports or extracurricular activities, 78% more likely to volunteer in the community and more than twice as likely to hold a leadership position in a club or sports team. “A lot of kids from all sectors of our state and all sectors of our society are experiencing trauma, depression or some kind of mental health impact from all that came with the pandemic,” said Deborah Neary, a member of the Nebraska State Board of Education. “I believe that’s the reason mentoring is needed now

more than ever, because there is a lot of research out there that shows a mentor in a child’s life can actually help reduce depression symptoms in that youth.” The NorthStar Foundation sees this effect up-close every day. The group works with young males, predominantly of-color, living in singleparent households where median family income is less than $30,000 annually.

Connecting the Dots

The organization’s most successful volunteer tutor mentors are those who can connect the dots between academics, today’s challenges and future success. “We’re talking about somebody who engages,” said Scott Hazelrigg, executive director. “As you can imagine, there’s really two pieces to the puzzle.

We’re always focused on the academic success of our students. However, coming out of the remote learning of the last 18 to 20 months, we know the social-emotional needs of our students may wildly outweigh where their heads are academically. “So, first and foremost, we seek adults who are able and interested to listen to a young person, building a relationship, and then change the focus from, ‘Tell me about your day, tell me about what interests you,’ to ‘This is a subject that may not really interest you, but it’s really important.’” “A mentor serves a lot of roles,” said Melissa Mayo, executive director of MENTOR Nebraska. “It can be someone providing coaching, support and/or advice. But more than anything, I think it’s

Page 7 • January 7, 2022

someone who cares about what’s best for that young person. “Every young person deserves to have someone in their corner, someone who can serve as a support, who will be there for them and really pour into them in terms of their time, in terms of a listening ear, be a cheerleader, all of those things.” In some cases, organizations are not just rebuilding their numbers, but doubling down on mentorships by expanding programs. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands, for instance, recently branched out from its wellknown community-based mentoring — currently serving about 800 children and youth — to introduce Mentor You, focusing on high schoolers. “Mentor You is one-to-one mentoring

just like our traditional community-based program, but the time commitment for that program is a bit less,” said Nichole Turgeon, CEO. “The mentor and mentee communicate through an online platform once a week. It’s very flexible. Through this messaging platform, we tie back to classroom lessons and things the students are working on. It’s a pretty minimal weekly time commitment.” Turgeon said innovating through the use of technology not only helps the group connect more young people and volunteers, but also addresses the oftMENTOR NEBRASKA

stated objections many prospective mentors have. “What we hear most is people are worried about the time commitment,” Turgeon said. “But when you dig a little bit deeper, I think what is underneath is really being concerned about disappointing a child or feeling like they aren’t good enough to be a mentor. We really try to share with people that these youth are looking for a person who will be there with them and be this caring friend. You don’t have to be perfect. Just consistently showing up is so important.”

More people are retiring early, which may be due in part to the effects of the pandemic. “They want to get busy living their retirement,” said Rick Dhabalt, co-owner of

DC Retirement Strategies. “There’s been so much disruption in their world, and [many are] working from home. I think we’ll see that trend continue in 2022.” Conditions are ideal to take the leap.

CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, HERITAGE COMMUNITIES

“As a result of the COVID pandemic, individuals who were close to retirement and financially prepared to retire decided to leave the workforce a year or two earlier than planned,” said Barbara Rizvi, director of

wealth and investments at FNBO. “A strong stock market in 2021 allowed them to enjoy their early retirement without regret.” Dhabalt said many retirees use a combination of investment products.

When different milestones occur — things like a change of job, an inheritance, or tax law changes — ‘TIS THEthe SEASON FOR UNIQUE GIFTS review [retirement] plan more frequently. - RICK DHABALT, CO-OWNER AND ADVISOR, DC RETIREMENT STRATEGIES

“Many of them are looking for what we define as reliable income in retirement such as Social Security and pensions,” he said. “[That is] static income they can count on to meet their needs. Some of these products have been around for a while, but I see more and more people using annuity solutions because they can give a reliable lifetime stream of income to complement their Social Security and pensions. Then, of course, there are your typical IRAs, mutual funds, managed solutions for other assets that are more liquid but also variable when it comes to how they react to the market.”

Retiring in 2022

Dhabalt recommended that those who plan to retire in 2022 meet with their financial advisers sooner rather than later. They should determine their risks for retirement, what their income needs will be, and what the tax implications of withdrawals from their retirement products will be. “The main thing is, what’s a sustainable withdrawal rate from those assets in retirement,” Dhabalt said. “Be proactive in getting prepared to sign up for Social Security and Medicare benefits.” Remember that if you’re younger than 59 and a half, the IRS will impose a 10% penalty on early withdrawals. After age 59 and a half, that penalty doesn’t apply. “They need to know what types of products they have and make sure they’re not going to have a negative tax situation,” Dhabalt said. “That’s where an adviser comes in, to know what all the money types are, where to draw money first and where to draw money last because there are a lot of great solutions such as traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs, and they’re all taxed differently.”

Those looking to retire still need to be on their toes. “We remain in uncertain times, so if you plan to retire in 2022, don’t assume your investments will appreciate as strongly as they did in 2021,” Rizvi said. “Make sure you have adequate cash reserves in a bank account to ride out a year or two of a bear market. If stocks stumble, this will allow you to maintain your standard of living without needing to liquidate investments during a down market.”

Planning Early

Dhabalt tells young professionals who are years away from retirement to start saving early and save as much as possible. Create a plan, review it periodically, and stick to the plan. “When in doubt, check the plan

because that has everything they talked about — the products, the taxes, all those implications,” Dhabalt said. “Review the plan annually at a minimum. When different milestones occur — things like a change of job, an inheritance, or tax law changes — review the plan more frequently.” “If you haven’t been saving or feel like you need to be saving more, the new year is a great time to start,” Rizvi said. “If you receive an annual pay increase or bonus, start with saving that. The best way to know if you are saving enough to support your desired lifestyle, both during your working years and during retirement, is to work with a financial planner.”

service is continuing, according to Matthew Munyon, retirement plan administrator at Swartzbaugh-Farber & Associates. “Benchmarking the plan every three to five years is very important to ensure you are receiving the best value and newest features,” he said. Auto-enroll/escalation is very big, and Munyon expects it to continue to grow and make a large impact within retirement plans. “I believe that features such as automatic enrollment and autoescalation, where all participants are enrolled unless they make an affirmative election not to be enrolled, and then have that deferral percentage increase by 1% per year up to 10% are going to increase in popularity,” Munyon said. “It is much harder to opt-out than it is to opt-in,

and we are seeing our retirement plan sponsors have higher participation levels when they use these features.” Swartzbaugh-Farber is continuing to see increased usage of target date funds, which goes hand-in-hand with the auto-enroll. “For the participants who are not comfortable making an investment decision, this is a great option for them to have an automatically adjusting, set-it and forget-it type of approach, based off of their expected retirement date,” Munyon said.

Investing Trends

Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) investing is gaining in popularity. Assets in ESG have grown from $22.8 trillion in 2018 to more than $35 trillion last year and are on track to hit $50 trillion in 2025, according to the Global Sustainable Investment Alliance based in Washington D.C. “I think we will continue to see states mandate that all full-time employees, and some eligible parttime employees, have access to a retirement plan through work, or provide information on how to save through a state program for

private employers who don’t have a retirement plan,” Munyon said. “They do not require employers to offer a plan, or make a matching contribution, but they do require that employers make sure that their employees are able to save for their retirement via a Roth or Traditional IRA by notifying them of the state option.”

they have a shortfall or if they have more than they need. “Be sure to factor in increasing health care costs and a reasonable rate of return from your investments,” Munyon said. “With all of the uncertainty of COVID-19 that remains, the stock market returns of the last decade are not safe assumptions to make. Be smart. If you can live off of your money when you are expecting a 4 to 5% rate of return, you’ll be happy when the returns are higher.” Young professionals can stay on track by using the auto-increase feature of 401(k)s, if available in their plan. “As you get pay increases and advance in your career, you are automatically saving more each year, up to the max deferral percentage allowed by your plan, typically 10 to15%,” Munyon said. “If you work for a company with a 401(k) plan, utilize the calculators and the ‘whatif’ scenarios that are included by your plan’s recordkeeper. They may not be perfect, but they will help you determine a target amount of savings you need to live the retirement you want. You can make assumptions off of future pay raises, investment returns, inflation [and other factors] to help you arrive at a target amount.” The power of compounding interest is impressive, and will make a difference at retirement. Take full advantage of your company’s matching contribution if you are able; do not leave money on the table. “I am also a believer in Roth contributions to a 401(k), or a Roth IRA,” Munyon said. “With a Roth you

defer money after-tax, but if you keep the money in the Roth for five years, and until you’re older than 59.5 years, the original contribution, and all of the growth, will be tax-free to you as you withdraw it. Over 10, 20, 30 years, that could be a large amount of growth that you take, tax-free.”

Retirement Living

Ovation Heartwood Preserve modified some of the design within its facility, particularly assisted living, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We redesigned what we call our ‘Discovery Room’ for families to visit should we ever wind up in a full lockdown,” General Manager Stephanie Grade said. “That [room] has an exterior door and has a custom wall that can be put up so everyone can visit in a beautiful setting and can be close to one another but still be safe. That will go into effect if we ever have those lock-down situations.” Ovation also examined its policies overall for ways to improve how it supports the spiritual and mental health of the residents. “We’ve been very lucky in that we haven’t been open during this time, but we’re revising how we will respond should that time arrive,” Grade said. Retirement living is moving away from an ‘institutional feel’ to more of a ‘residential’ feel. Ovation has options for independent living, assisted living, and memory care. “We have been lucky so far to be able to find really great people to fill our positions, but finding staffers is a challenge for everyone,” Grade

said. “Supply chain issues are a great challenge for us as we look to open because a lot of what we do is moving technology forward, and the supply chain has some glitches in that sector.” Grade expects Ovation to re-open between January and March. The firm is currently taking reservations and applications. In the past year, Heritage Communities — which has 15 senior living communities in Nebraska, Iowa, and Arizona — added independent living and memory support to its Heritage at Fox Run Community in Council Bluffs, and about a year ago the firm added the Heritage at Fountain Point in Norfolk, Nebraska, Chief Operating Officer Amy Birkel said.

“We’re seeing that even though we’re all living with COVID, we’ve figured out how to have good safety protocols and infection control practices while still having a community living setting,” she said. The staffing shortage has pushed the firm to be more innovative to attract employees by offering different career path opportunities, benefits, and educational opportunities. “We’ve increased our tuition reimbursement program,” Birkel said. In addition to Nebraska’s low unemployment rate, the pandemic is a driver of the worker shortage. “I think people are shying away from health care,” Birkel said. “We have to take a few more safety

precautions regarding personal protective equipment. Potentially people who have a fear of COVID might be a challenge for us, but it’s easy to educate and combat that when our applicants can see our environment, can see that our residents are living and happy and that our associates are able to enjoy a rewarding and fun environment to work in. “Caring for others is a rewarding career path. If someone wants to have influence and work in an environment where they really can make a difference, health care, and senior living in particular, is a great environment where they can get that started.”

Community Knowledge PJ MORGAN OWNERS DIVERSIFY PROJECTS From adding an event management division targeting projects in Millwork Commons and the Capital District to plans for development work in re-emerging neighborhoods, PJ Morgan Real Estate owners Ryan Ellis and Susan Clark are leveraging their community knowledge to diversify the services of the business they purchased three years ago. Ellis, CEO/sales and leasing broker, said the diversification thrust is to “offer all things real estate and all under one roof.” President Susan Clark said the service expansion thrust, which was initiated last year, offers the firm’s 40 employees and 60 independent contractors additional opportunities in which to thrive.

Big Moves PJ Morgan Real Estate, with 10,000 square feet of office space at 7801 Wakeley Plaza, has plans for growing a new office recently opened in Elkhorn. With the expansion of revenues fueling additional hires, especially in the administrative support and property management positions, the Omaha-based firm has grown to become one of the state’s largest full-service real estate businesses.

The business units of property management, buying and selling of commercial and residential units, and rentals each contribute approximately an equal share toward PJ Morgan Real Estates’ overall revenues. Clark, who joined PJ Morgan Real Estate as vice president in 2013, admits that the Morgan name had been firmly entrenched with commercial real estate ventures and property management at a time nine years ago when she brought her strong background in residential sales to the table. Her ownership partner, Ellis — who started his real estate career with Morgan as a Creighton University business finance student — said it is the “high-profile passion projects” that drive him in seeking to add diversity to the revenues of PJ Morgan Real Estate.

Collaborative Ideas Ellis said PJ Morgan Real Estate will likely be seeking out partnerships with projects similar in scope to Flywheel/WP Engine’s move of their headquarters into renovated space in Millwork Commons or the move of Scoular’s corporate headquarters from its long-time downtown location into a 52,000-square-foot renovated building at 13360 California.

Our future is in seeking collaborative ideas on projects rather than approaching projects with all the competitiveness our industry can bring. - RYAN ELLIS, CEO, PJ MORGAN REAL ESTATE

“Our future is in seeking collaborative ideas on projects rather than approaching projects with all the competitiveness our industry can bring,” said Ellis, who cites the South 10th street corridor as an area ripe for development. “From the 10th Street bridge south to Center there’s a lot of opportunities for office redevelopment, multi-family housing and additional retail and service businesses,” he added. The closing of the Bohemian Cafe, a long-time family-owned staple in the Little Bohemia neighborhood, has offered PJ Morgan Real Estate an important opportunity. With colleagues Derick Lewin — sales and leasing agent for commercial and residential — and Colleen Mason, commercial sales and leasing agent, Ellis said that by relocating Bumper & Auto — an auto parts warehouse — nearby to 1715 S. 13th St., the purchase of that building and its redevelopment has spurred organic development in the neighborhood. Both Ellis and Clark emphasize that such projects, whether in single or in multiple neighborhoods, offer plenty of growth opportunities for P J Morgan Real Estate. The South 10th Street neighborhood could be similar to the resurgence of Benson, Clark and Ellis said.

Diversifying is Key About seven months ago PJ Morgan launched its event management division. Natalie Wallace as its director has identified a couple dozen opportunities for the firm to host weddings, concerts, corporate parties and events, as well as utilizing outside igloo structures that will draw more attention to the Millwork Commons/Capital District and South 10th St. neighborhoods. “The future of real estate development is in mixed-use residential and commercial projects,” Clark said. “There are a lot of oddball buildings available.”

As the owners of PJ Morgan Real Estate, Ellis and Clark decided to staythe-course when the pandemic hit. Property management and residential sales divisions increased. The firm brought in commercial agents and gave them a broader training toward the emerging needs of the real estate profession. “As a result, we’re now giving better customer service, growing our team and providing space here in which our people will thrive,” Clark said. “During COVID we tore apart our systems and processes and we rebuilt and refined them,” Ellis said.

Strengthening the Core He noted that the firm had only 12 employees in 2000 when he was hired and that PJ Morgan differentiates itself in longevity of property managers. Five of 14 have more than a decade of service and about half the agents have reached the ten-year plateau. PJ Morgan Real Estate employees range from a 20-year-old property manager assistant to commercial sales agents in their 70s. Ellis, a graduate of Randall School of Real Estate, began his full-time career at PJ Morgan Real Estate as director of property management. In 2019, after reading a letter from a client praising a recent snow removal job as the “best in 25 years,” Ellis decided to capitalize on the expertise of the private group of maintenance workers he was using. PJ Morgan Maintenance was formed as a division of the larger firm. It has grown to eight employees and offers its variety of services to customers citywide. PJ Morgan Real Estate was founded as one of several real estate entities by Omaha entrepreneur P.J. Morgan. Morgan, who started his career in the 1960s, has served as a state senator, Omaha mayor, and in his present position as a Douglas Country commissioner.

CONNECTION THROUGH COFFEE

SMALL business NICK SOUCEK, OWNER, ELEVATED ASPECT COLD BREW

BUT FIRST, coffee

ELEVATED ASPECT COLD BREW FINDS UNTAPPED MARKET A Facebook ad enticing Nick Soucek to buy boxed coffee, similar to boxed wine, had an unexpected result. Instead of purchasing the product, Soucek found himself wondering if he could make his own. The query was the genesis of Elevated Aspect Cold Brew, a twist on locally made cold brew that started out being shipped straight to customers’ doorsteps.

would have to buy in bulk,” Soucek said. He eventually found fellow coffee lover and entrepreneur Matt Boshart, owner of Reboot Roasting. Boshart founded Reboot Roasting in Omaha in 2015 as an online retailer, eventually growing to a wholesale supplier and adding a subscription service. “I remember when I first started Reboot I needed just a couple of pieces to fall into place so I could take off,” Boshart said. “For him, one of his missing puzzle pieces was developing a relationship with a roaster. I was The Grind super pumped to be able to be that puzzle piece.” At first, Soucek merely wanted to see if there were other local Boshart agreed to sell Soucek beans at a wholesale price with no companies focusing strictly on cold brew in Omaha. “crazy minimums.” “I noticed that there was nothing in Omaha,” he said. “As I did more “We started with just one roast (Columbian), and now we offer three research, I found that most decent sized cities had at least one or two companies that just did cold brew coffee. I thought it was an opportunity.” different roasts from him and a bunch of different flavored roasts,” Soucek said. Elevated Aspect Cold Brew was born and Soucek went to work finding The similar business models, which focus on wholesale and direct to the right coffee supplier who not only had a quality product but would customer sales, sparked a professional and personal relationship between also work with a startup. “Some larger companies didn’t even want to talk to me because we Boshart and Soucek.

“We’ve been able to freely share info back and forth to help each other succeed,” Boshart said. “I’m always impressed when he lets me sample a new product.”

Taste the Difference

What makes Elevated Aspect Cold Brew unique is twofold. First, it uses sterile filtration to package the product. The process is generally more time consuming and costly according to Soucek. “That’s something that separates us from about 95% of cold brew companies in the market,” he said. The other option, he said, is to pasteurize the product with high heat, which is not only quicker and cheaper, but also extends the shelf life. But “the heat ruins the flavor of the coffee,” he said. Second, the product itself is a 1.5-liter pouch that contains a coffee concentrate that when prepared makes double its volume, up to 3 liters, and is shelf stable for a month. Elevated Aspect is one of a few local coffee shops that offers locally made concentrate. Providing a concentrate rather than pre-made cold brew not only saves space in the fridge, but also allows for personalized tastes. To use the concentrate, you combine one part concentrate with an equal amount of another liquid — such as black coffee, milk or water. This dilutes the concentrate. Depending on the customers preference the ratios can be adjusted. Available year round are: Columbian Roast, Ethiopian Roast, Honduran Roast, Espresso Roast, Cinnamon Vanilla, Caramel, Irish Cream, and French Vanilla. Both Columbia and Caramel have a decaf option.

Soucek brought back the Pumpkin Spice concentrate for the Fall and launched Maple Vanilla for the winter season.

Convenient Coffee

While the bulk of orders over the past year have been online, Soucek is expanding availability and convenience with the addition of distribution at the Shadow Lake Towne Center Hy-Vee location in Papillion. “We sold 100 units our first month,” he said. “Now we’re in our second Hy-Vee and ideally we’d like to be in most if not all the Hy-Vees in Omaha.” The second location is on 90th Street and West Center Road. He’s placing emphasis on demos at the two Omaha locations before considering expanding to other markets, such as Lincoln and Des Moines. In August last year, Elevated Aspect introduced its Nitro Cans, which is currently being sold at other local businesses such as Kros Strain Brewery, Café Postale and Carter & Rye. With double the shelf life, Soucek is hoping that Nitro Cans will open up distribution with other cafes. In September he announced that he had moved into his own space in Bellevue and was adding new equipment to help him continue to expand. Soucek is quick to note all the local business that have helped him grow during the first year and is paying it forward by partnering with other startups, like Creme de la Creme. “I know it’s hard to find customers when you first get started, so I thought it would be nice to have [Chef Jeff’s] products on our website and offer them to our customers,” he said. “I got things off the ground, and I would like to see other people do the same thing.”

FOR MANY PEOPLE, RETIREMENT PLANNING DOES NOT COME QUICKLY OR EASILY. RECOGNIZING THIS, MUTUAL OF OMAHA DESIGNED A NEW, OPEN ARCHITECTURE PRODUCT WITH AMERICAN TRUST WITH THE GOAL OF MAKING RETIREMENT MORE ACCESSIBLE.. “Our new retirement product was built on the premise of simple, easy, and intuitive,” said Laura Huscroft, vice president of 401(k) at Mutual of Omaha. “By creating a product that’s simple and intuitive, while maintaining broad access to investment options, we have built a product that’s appealing to both startup plans, including those faced with state mandates, as well as large plans that are supported by specialist advisers.” The open architecture, combined with enhanced technology from American Trust, will expedite retirement product installation, taking the processing time from months to just weeks, and “eventually days or hours.” Additionally, Huscroft said the new product will have an expanded suite of financial wellness tools to help guide customers. “These tools will provide participants, employers and financial professionals access to actionable information to improve retirement outcomes,” she said. The retirement services division of Mutual of Omaha has been around for over 45 years of the Omaha-based company’s 112-year history. EdgeCo., the parent company of American Trust, has been active for over four decades and services approximately $150 bullion under custody, administration and wealth.

TABITHA AND IMMANUEL COMMUNITIES

WHEN THE VNA SOLD ITS HOME HEALTH AND HOSPICE SERVICES IN JULY 2021 TO AMEDISYS, A FOR-PROFIT COMPANY BASED IN LOUISIANA, IT CREATED A CATALYST FOR A NEW COLLABORATION BETWEEN TABITHA AND IMMANUEL.

“After the VNA sold their home care business there really wasn’t any other significant nonprofit home care business in the community that was striving to take care of those that are impoverished,” said Immanuel President and CEO Eric Gurley. In November Immanuel announced that it had teamed up with Lincoln-based Tabitha to bring the nonprofit home health care and hospice service provider to the Omaha market. Immanuel — which owns and operates 16 independent living, assisted living and long-term retirement communities — has previously chosen not to offer home health care or hospice services. “In this joint venture, Tabitha provides the expertise and infrastructure needed to initiate, develop, and sustain the home health care and hospice programs [at Immanuel and in Omaha],” said Bridget Caniglia, administrator for Tabitha Hospice & Home Health Care’s emerging markets. Tabitha, which shares kinship with Immanuel through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has been providing home health care services since 1966, and hospice care since 1979. “Immanuel stands to benefit because that helps complete the continuum of care internally. In all of our communities that’s a missing piece that is being outsourced to many different providers,” Gurley said. Tabitha’s program is slated to begin providing hospice services in early 2022, followed by skilled home health care services later in the year. The two organizations previously collaborated in Lincoln at Immanuel’s The Landing where Tabitha now administers long-term care and skilled nursing. Tabitha also provides home health care and hospice services to other communities in Lincoln. “Tabitha chooses to partner with organizations whose missions is also to serve seniors,” Caniglia said. Echoing the same sentiment, Gurley said “[Tabitha] serves everyone, not excluding people that can’t pay the full cost. It’s difficult to find partners who are willing to do that, and do it well.”.

MIDWEST EYE CARE

MIDWEST EYE CARE WILL BE PROVIDING FREE LASIK OR PRK SURGERY FOR FIVE COMMUNITY MEMBERS AS PART OF ITS INAUGURAL EYES ON HEROES CONTEST. “Midwest Eye Care has been a part of the Omaha community for over 70 years, and it’s important for us to always be looking for ways to give back, not only to our patients who come to see us in our clinic every day, but also to other members of our community — especially those who may be in need,” said Dr. David Ingvoldstad. The winners were selected by public vote on the Midwest Eye Care website and include: Brandon Allen, deputy with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office; Cass Birdsall-Scherer, speech-language pathologist with Westside Community Schools; Nancy Cavada, COVID-19 test administrator; Ashley Debolt, kindergarten teacer from Omaha and Elkhorn public schools; and Sarah Melland, critical care float nurse at Methodist Hospital. The contest is part of a three-part initiative aimed at serving the community and making vision accessible for all. Over the summer Midwest Eye Care participated in Mission Cataract, a national program that provides free cataract surgery for low-income individuals. In October of 2021 it launched Community In Focus, providing free assessments and eyeglasses to those in need at four local shelters. The team plans on continuing all three initiatives for the foreseeable future.

KINTINU AFTER NEARLY QUADRUPLING ITS TEAM OF EXPERTS IN 2020 ALONE, QLI’S TELEREHABILITATION PROGRAM IS ENTERING A NEW PHASE, REBRANDING TO KINTINU TO EXPAND SERVICES AND PARTNERSHIPS.

For years QLI has been working alongside a large clientele of worker’s compensation companies, which allowed the program to gain quick momentum. This new phase will allow QLI to filter into other demographics, such as self-funded employers or employers seeking unique benefits, and other third-party administrators. “Because we will be seeking partnerships outside of our core service offerings of QLI, we saw an opportunity to pair the great aspects of QLI while also sharing the key attributes of Kitinu’s identity and culture as we establish new partners who may be unfamiliar with who we are and what we do,” said Steve Kerschke, QLI’s director of marketing. Prior to the rebrand, experts in the areas of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and psychology helped treat patients with complex neurological injuries. New services for individuals could include general orthopedic injuries, pain management and education, health and wellness education and training, women’s health, and more. The program, which was previously referred to as QLI Telerehabilitation, got its start in 2018 as a pilot program to grow QLI’s virtual extension. “It was formed to support the core mission of QLI with a focus on education, contextual training, repetition, and real-world skill-building via an easily accessible video platform,” said Kerschke. “This will not change, and we will continue to leverage this while we remain part of the QLI community.”

EAKES OFFICE SOLUTIONS

EAKES OFFICE SOLUTIONS FINISHED OFF A BUSY YEAR WITH THE ADDITION OF OFFICENET, A 67-YEAR-OLD OFFICE SUPPLY DEALER WITH LOCATIONS IN COLUMBUS, FREMONT AND GRAND ISLAND. IN ADDITION TO RECEIVING SEVERAL AWARDS THIS YEAR, EAKES ALSO ACQUIRED SCHWARTZ PAPER OF LINCOLN AND MONEYWISE OF SCOTTSBLUFF. With 14 offices spread across Nebraska, Eakes has been competing with OfficeNet in the office supply market for decades. “But it was a respectful competition and now that we are one, we can gain many efficiencies in how we go to market,” said Eakes President and CEO Mark Miller. Miller said the merger will create a “better business model” that will add additional products to the OfficeNet customers, such as document/print management software and janitorial products. “Most importantly, we were able to retain many of OfficeNets’s employees,” he said. “Their relationships with their customers were rock solid and their level of customer care was very high.” Challenges presented by COVID-19, including supply chain issues and staffing shortages, have put a strain on other small businesses in the market. Miller said that these challenges will, and to an extent already have, spurred more conversations on acquisitions. “[But] we need a little time for our people to catch up,” he said. “Over the years we have developed a very capable team of people who make these acquisition transitions nice for the customers and employees,” he said. “But the work is hard, and our team still has their ‘day job.’ So. This talented group needs a break, and we intent to give them that for a while.”

The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal: 1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document to the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address. Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error. All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information 2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment options are cash or check. 3. Deadline is noon on Tuesday for a notice to start publishing that Friday. 4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts. 5. You will receive a paid invoice copy the first week it runs.
