Generation Brings New Tactics
Investing

The financial industry is undergoing a revolution of historic proportions. Not only is the sector transitioning out from under the baby boomer generation, which generated billions in wealth, but the generation that’s coming into its own behind them thinks and behaves differently than their parents and grandparents. Throw in a pandemic, and it’s been a time of nearconstant transition in the industry for the past decade.

Experts say while the ultimate goals of investors don’t change much by era – to grow wealth and lots of it, as quickly as possible – the new investor is a species that’s prone to playing by its own set of rules, towing the industry in its wake. And leading that parade is technology, shaping investment outlook and behaviors alike.

“All generations tend to be impacted by what they personally experience growing up,” said Erin Wood, senior vice president, financial planning and advanced solutions with Carson Group. “What is different about this generation is their access to information.

“They have grown up with the ability to have any question answered instantly on their phone and with the upswing of podcasts and social media there are plenty of places to get basic investing information for free. This of course can lead to false information, which I consider to be the new version of the watercooler rumor.”

Millennials and Gen Z investors’ reliance on technology –including social media – to provide easy answers to much more complex financial questions is an issue that permeates this age demographic. MagnifyMoney.com surveyed the category in 2021 and found almost 60% of investors 40 or younger were members of investment communities or forums, such as Reddit or a group of like-minded investor friends.

YouTube was the leading source for the survey sample’s investing information, with more than four out of 10 young investors turning to the site for help in the past month. TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook groups and Reddit, respectively, all

“Technology has had the biggest impact on investors within the past 10 to 20 years,” said Jeremy Palensky, Raymond James financial advisor at FNBO. “The news, social media outlets and all the information they’re able to get their hands on makes some investors believe they can do and learn most everything.

“Though the endless amounts of information can be a huge advantage if used correctly, I see many of these information outlets as a disadvantage for a lot of investors. The internet

the alarm, the impact of technology hasn’t been all bad.

“It isn’t fair to typecast the whole generation by saying they only invest in meme stocks. It is not indicative of the whole generation; lots of people of all ages got caught up in that hype,” said Matthew Munyon, retirement plan administrator with Swartzbaugh-Farber & Associates, Inc. “[Younger investors] are very adept and comfortable with using technology, so they utilize mobile apps such as Robinhood, Coinbase or Webull, among many others, to handle their investing.”

Munyon also said the younger generation tends to get viewed

unfairly for being fast adopters of such things as cryptocurrencies and NFTs. He said this has more to do with the different rates at which the generations understand such new concepts than it does with the merit of those opportunities.

“I don’t think that, as a whole, they are fundamentally more aggressive than other generations were at that age,” he said. “They are so used to digital transactions I think they have a greater appreciation for blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. Crypto is a very aggressive investment, and

unpredictable, but it does have a lot of interesting proposals and applications for the future.

“I don’t see this as any different than my generation investing in the internet stocks such as Amazon, eBay or PayPal, to name a few, in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was a new concept, many people didn’t trust its longevity or purpose, and now our lives are dictated by the internet.”

In fact, there’s an upside to the younger generation’s view on investing and the tools by which they come into it. That is, this demographic has shown little to no fear of trying something new and this, combined with the low entry barrier of today’s investment apps, has led many to jump into savings and investing.

“I will say that they are more likely to invest at a younger age and that is because of their access to information and the ability to download an app from their phone and start trading within minutes,” Munyon said. “It has never been easier to invest and coupled with the continued growth of workplace retirement plans, they are starting earlier and investing more than the previous generations did simply because it is so much more accessible now.”

Generation Of Savers

Therein lies one of the most interesting contradictions in the common perception of the young investor. For everything that’s new and changed due to technology, the age group appears to be better versed in the most fundamental canon of building wealth –starting early.

“Individuals who grow up during thriving times, that is, strong job markets and strong investment markets, tend to be more accepting of risk,” Wood said. “Those who grow up in weak job markets combined with volatile investments and poor housing markets tend to be more conservative.

“Younger individuals are investing in employer plans much sooner than previous generations. They have grown up their whole life hearing about 401(k)s and employer match. Younger individuals are also more likely to search for an adviser, planner or firm that has the exact offering and fee they are looking for.”

Another seemingly contradictory trait in the younger generation of investor is an overall aversion to risk, especially compared

to other generations. This attitude has put a drag on younger investors growing wealth, Palensky said.

“Older investors have seen some very volatile markets but have also been through incredibly prosperous times. At a certain point some of these investors may become more conservative, but many of them are still very willing to take risks,” he said. “Younger investors, however, have seen a lot of volatility, mostly negative news from all social media outlets, and have watched their parents struggle through the early 2000’s recession, ’08 financial crisis and COVID-19.

“That doesn’t mean they aren’t saving, but oftentimes when I meet with younger investors, they have saved up way too much money in their savings account and are invested conservatively in their 401(k)s. It takes a lot of education to get them to appropriately invest.”

Advisers Still Important

Given all of these changes, the role of the financial adviser has never been more critical. Palensky said in an environment where everything and anything is open and available, the challenge for many investors lies in thinking strategically.

“The best thing to do for the majority of investors as they build their wealth is to keep the process of investing simple,” he said. “Find an adviser you trust, build out a financial plan to follow, continually add money to your investments on a regular basis and don’t let the short-term distractions deter you from your long-term goals.

“It’s easy for most everyone to make money in a bull market, and it gives them confidence that they can manage their own investments. But once the volatility hits, they almost always end

New Money

up doing the complete opposite of what they should. Having a sound financial adviser to call during those times will help you put things into perspective, calm your fears and keep your mindset focused on your goals, not the news.”

Wood agreed, adding that trust has never been more important between the adviser and client, especially when it comes to putting today’s opportunities into proper historical context.

“There will always be ‘new’ trends in investing. Most of them are not new but a recreation of something old,” she said. “Tax codes change often and how you take advantage of the current rules will need to evolve. For example, investing in incomeproducing properties, normally rental properties, made sense for some individuals in a historically low-interest rate environment. That same approach will be more difficult to achieve in a highinterest rate environment where mortgages will be steeper.”

Once this education starts to sink in, younger investors don’t cling to previous habits at all costs any more than their parents did. As Munyon noted, learning from past missteps and lifelong access to information has helped them become astute and strategic in ways their predecessors may have come to more slowly.

“You learn by trying, right?” he said. “I have had many conversations with Gen Xers on investing, and I think that they have learned from things and are investing more with a purpose and a long-term time horizon.

“I do feel that this generation is thinking that Social Security may not be there for them or may not exist in the way it does currently. They know that they may have to have more of their own money saved up for their future financial security. That thought, along with the increased accessibility to trading, has them saving more, and starting earlier, than any other generation.”

Preparing Your Clients FOR LEGACY GIVING

Nebraska is in the early stages of the biggest transfer of wealth in the state’s history. According to recent estimates, more than $100 billion in wealth in Nebraska will be transferred from one generation to the next by 2030. That number jumps to almost $1 trillion within 50 years. Many of these transfers will include charitable donations. Are your clients and their families prepared for this transition?

The Omaha Community Foundation makes it simple to plan for future charitable impact and to establish generational giving. Encouraging clients to have these conversations across generations not only informs families about future financial plans, it also allows them to feel included and excited about the plan, giving them a sense of ownership in family philanthropy.

“I encourage my clients who are interested in charitable giving to have that conversation with their kids about why we are doing this, and how the kids can have a role,” said Jonathan Grob, local estate planning attorney. “For a lot of clients, the local community is where their heart is. So, if they are going to have a local legacy it should be with people like those at OCF who know the community and who will always have an impact locally.”

When your clients are ready to establish their legacy giving, partnering with OCF can make your job easier because of our philanthropic expertise and deep knowledge of local needs and the nonprofit organizations that are working on

solutions in our community.

There are a number of ways people can fund their legacy giving that have tax advantages:

• Wills or Trusts – name a fund at the Omaha Community Foundation in your will or trust and work with us to craft your legacy.

• Legacy Donor Advised Fund – create a fund at the Foundation where the next generation can advise on grant making to nonprofit organizations.

• Legacy Designated Fund – create a fund at the Foundation where you define the longevity of the fund, structure of grant amounts, and preferences for grant designations, then our team will carry out these directives.

• Life Insurance Beneficiary Designation – name a fund at the Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or donate an existing policy.

• IRA Beneficiary Designation – name a fund at the Foundation as a primary or contingent beneficiary of all or a portion of an individual retirement account.

• Establishing a fund for legacy giving at the Omaha Community Foundation to support organizations that matter most to you or designating a legacy gift to an existing fund, like our Let Good Grow Fund, makes charitable giving easy for your clients and their family.

If you have any questions about charitable legacy planning or how the Omaha Community Foundation can bolster your philanthropic knowledge, reach out to me at 402-884-1757 or catherine@omahafoundation.org.

Immigrants & Refugees

A GROWING DEMOGRAPHIC OF ENTREPRENEURS

Editor’s note: This is the second in a series of features detailing immigrants and refugees within Nebraska communities.

A 2019 report from SCORE and the Small Business Administration found that there are 3.2 million immigrant-owned businesses in the U.S., employing 8 million people and contributing $1.3 trillion to the U.S. economy.

Studies have found that migrants, despite losing nearly all their human capital, are more likely to start businesses. An MIT study went as far as to deduce that immigrants are 80% more likely to start a business than their U.S.born counterparts.

The numbers track. In 2019, immigrant-owned businesses accounted for 25% of all new businesses (SCORE), despite only making up about 14% of the U.S. population. Those entrepreneurs are leading the charge for tailored

resources to help even more migrants achieve the “American dream.”

Language Barriers

In Omaha, immigrants make up almost 11% of the population according to the most recent census. Regardless of home country, professionals working with immigrants from all countries named language barriers as the No. 1 challenge. “For people that are like me, from non-English speaking countries, they come [to the U.S.] and the first, and the biggest hurdle initially, is to learn English,” said Karine Sokpoh, founder of 402 Legal and the Midlands African Chamber. Sokpoh emigrated from Togo, a country in West Africa.

For example, Dekow Sagar, founder and executive director of the International Council for Refugees and Immigrants (ICRI), said many

immigrants struggle to comprehend questions on job applications.

“Because what they consider employment is somewhat different,” he said. “In their head, they’re thinking, well, I’ve not worked for someone, I’ve never been paid a salary.

“A lot of them have experience in running their own businesses, and if you talk to them, you understand that this person was in business for an extended period of time.”

This language barrier keeps immigrants in what professionals have defined as “survival mode.”

Sokpoh said certifications, licenses and degrees from other countries are not always recognized across borders.

“These are mothers and fathers, and they can’t just sit around until they learn English, until they can become a nurse again or a licensed engineer and architect, and make money,” she said. “So what they do is they get the first available job, whether that’s McDonald’s or housekeeping or something else.”

Further, when relocating, immigrants lose their human capital, what Sokpoh calls the “three C’s:” capital, coaching and connections. Without those three items, it can be difficult for immigrants to navigate a system.

“It’s not only the language barrier,” said Lulu-A-Ferdous, program manager at ICRI. “It’s the regulations, the tax system, the whole legal process. It’s not only daunting, it can be overwhelming.”

Seeking Capital

For newly arrived immigrants, receiving a loan or funding for a business is difficult because credit scores, even if tracked in their home country, do not cross borders. Additionally, the loss of connections and networks challenges potential owners.

“They say most small business owners get funding by bootstrapping: family, friends, their own savings,” Sokpoh said. “It makes it tougher for [immigrants] to get that initial capital going, because they just don’t have that network available.”

Information from SCORE and the SBA confirm that immigrants are 72% to 83.5% more likely to be rejected when seeking expanded lines of credit, crowdfunding, new investors or online lenders. Eighty-one percent use what personal savings they have to start their business.

ICRI is tackling this challenge through the Refugee Microenterprise Development Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In addition to distributing loans of up to $15,000, ICRI provides case management services, financial training and help through the legal process of starting a business.

The loan and payments are also reported to a third party so that refugees can begin building credit.

To qualify, immigrants must have entered the country less than five

years ago. For those who have been in the country for longer, funding can still be a challenge.

The MAC’s Pitch Black! competition offers an opportunity for all minorities, including immigrants, to earn seed funding. Last year’s first place went to Okra African Grill founder, Nina Sodji, who emigrated from Togo in 1994 on a business visa.

Wealth of Information

With so many pieces to running a business in the U.S., there can be a lot to understand. Luis Franco, a bilingual business consultant at the Nebraska Business Development Center, said it can be so overwhelming that immigrants either don’t know what questions to ask, or don’t ask questions for fear of being judged or misguided.

Often, he said, when a Spanish-speaking individual arrives at NBDC and realizes there is bilingual staff on hand they are relieved. NBDC can help create items related to finances, such as projections and business plans.

“They know how to solve a problem or provide service,” Franco said. “However, tracking the numbers, figuring out the breakeven point, and when they’re going to be profitable, that’s where they struggle. The financial background.”

Many organizations, like the NBDC, don’t have the capacity to offer all the services needed, and therefore partner with other organizations to fill the gaps. For example, if a client needs a loan, Franco can send them to the Nebraska Enterprise Fund (NEF). If NEF has a client that needs help with financial projections, they can send them to NBDC.

I Need What?

With organizations stepping in to help immigrants create successful businesses, there is another problem emerging: equity.

Armando Salgado, founder of LingoDocs Marketing, began seeing the big picture in 2014 when he encouraged his clients and Hispanic community members to bid for work on Metropolitan Community College’s Fort Omaha campus expansion. He said at the time there was a percentage of work set aside for minority-owned companies in North and South Omaha.

But he soon learned that none of his contacts from South Omaha received the contract because they didn’t have proper documentation, such as license and insurance.

They didn’t know they needed it.

Soon after Salgado was asked by MCC to create a class given in Spanish to help close the information gap. For several years now he’s been teaching the Academia de Contratistas y Comerciantes (Business & Contractors Academy), which is an eight-week course covering everything from insurance & licensing, to accounting and marketing.

“Off of this course, what’s been coming out of it is [that I’m] building the United Hispanic Contractors Association,” Salgado said. “There’s no advocacy

for the Hispanic community on construction.”

Additionally, he’s working on another course that would build on the basics, helping contractors become competitive in their field, and building their wealth and presence in Greater Omaha.

“Ninety-eight percent of them are first-generation immigrants,” he said. “My goal is to teach them how to earn and give back because I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for people that went out of their way, and put their hands in the fire, for me to be here.”

All Hands on Deck

Often, Salgado said students or clients will come to him asking for advice on business matters because they’re not sure where else to go. For the Hispanic population, Salgado said it’s a lack of organized representation that needs to be addressed.

That’s why he helped found the Latino Economic Development Council and sits on several boards, including Heartland Workforce Solutions (HWS), College of Saint Mary, Cinco de Mayo, and the Business Ethics Alliance.

This same “hands on deck” mentality can be found at MAC, ICRI and the NBDC where a shared experience propels passion.

“Ninety percent of our employees and staff are refugees and immigrants. Our services, and our mindset directly correlates to what we’re doing,” Lulu-AFerfous said.

In a survey conducted by SCORE and the Small Business Association, immigrant entrepreneurs listed having a business mentor as one of the top assets. Following advice from the SBA, ICRI is working to build a mentoring network.

“What we are envisioning in the next several decades is that these refugeeowned businesses will also empower, mentor and hire other refugees,” Lulu-A-Ferdous said.

ICRI is working on reaching out to successful immigrant business owners to create an advisory panel, and is partnering with HWS, MCC, and the AIM Institute to help with career navigation.

Across the board, professionals said the biggest need is help with the more technical aspects of running and growing a business.

“It requires a lot of skill,” Sagar said. “One thing we have been talking about is that if you’re administering a loan, you need that technical skill set, you need the legal expertise. If someone wants to volunteer with us to establish and guide us [we can] make what will probably be one of the leading programs throughout the nation.”

Franco from NBDC said that for individuals wanting to lend a hand, the best way to start is to connect with organizations.

“Once you build your network, you can understand where you can help,” he said. “You will see that organizations have their main capacities, or capabilities, and you can say ‘this is where I can partner with you, and this is where I can help your clients or your potential clients.’”

BEA Trustee Spotlight

GET TO KNOW PATRICIA KEARNS BUSINESS ETHICS alliance

The Business Ethics Alliance is kicking off a series of bi-monthly articles highlighting a different Alliance Trustee partner and how they weave ethical practices into all aspects of their organization. Our first Trustee Spotlight focuses on Patricia Kearns, President and CEO of QLI, Inc. Patricia is also the Alliance’s Trustee Chair, supporting and leading Trustee engagement.

Q. What does business ethics mean to you?

Business ethics means creating and upholding a culture that prioritizes honesty, transparency, and always doing the right thing.

Q. Who or what influenced the development of the ethical qualities you live by?

I grew up in a small community in western Nebraska and throughout my school years…was involved in pretty much every extracurricular activity that was offered … I was surrounded by terrific coaches who invested in my growth … They taught me how to build trust through open communication, accountability, hard work, prioritizing the team over self, and consistently behaving with a high level of integrity. They instilled a mindset of always do what’s right … with the understanding that positive behavior will have a positive impact on the success of the team.

that passion, the motivation to always do my best and do what’s right. Being part of Team QLI reinforces leading with honesty, transparency, compassion for others, and a commitment to excellence … Every decision we make, regardless of challenge or opportunity, requires the highest level of integrity so that we can do our best for our clients and their families.

Q. What do you believe compromises the ethical workplace?

Bad things happen when good people do nothing.

An ethical workplace requires all team members to have a high level of accountability to always do what’s right … Lack of accountability at the top, and even lack of clear expectations communicated from the top, will quickly compromise a workplace. Upholding an ethical workplace also requires psychological safety …. Leaders must create and maintain a culture of safety, so that good team members feel safe speaking up when they encounter anything that feels ethically questionable.

Q. What do you consider when moving through an ethical decision-making process?

Q. What are some of your most ethical qualities and why?

I have been fortunate to connect to a mission and purpose that’s so much bigger than me. My time at QLI created a passion for serving others and, from

JOIN BUSINESS ETHICS ALLIANCE

Q. Why did you join the Business Ethics Alliance?

Ethical decision making is a priority for me and for all of the leaders at QLI. Joining the Business Ethics Alliance signaled we were serious about ethical business practices. Joining the Alliance also opened the door for learning opportunities and access to resources that would support my growth as a leader and our team in ethical decision making. As Dr. Erin Bass said during EthicSpace, “we all strive to do well by doing good; but doing good isn’t always as easy as a simple math equation.” Engaging with the Business Ethics Alliance has made me a

1) Regardless of good intentions, it’s tough to make good decisions if you don’t thoroughly understand the issue. Albert Einstein offered wise advice for sound problem solving and decision-making when saying, “If I had an hour to solve a problem, I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and five minutes thinking about solutions.”

2) Who should be involved in the decision-

better leader and assured I always have support when the right answers or decisions aren’t immediately obvious.

Q. What are some of your goals as incoming Trustee Chair?

The Business Ethics Alliance will celebrate 15 years of supporting an ethical Omaha business community in 2023. The team has put together a terrific line up of events and a range of educational resources for the upcoming year – all thoughtfully designed to support every trustee organization. I am thrilled to be in a position to support Michael, his team, and the Board of Directors in bringing Omaha metro businesses together to learn, support each other, and celebrate the impact of Alliance.

making process based on their knowledge, integrity, awareness of biases, and willingness to offer alternative perspectives and have healthy conflict.

3) All possible scenarios and the potential consequences are considered in hopes to avoid unintended consequences.

4) Keeping an open mind to evaluate the impact of a decision made and being prepared to change the course of action is important.

We will be particularly focused on re-engaging Trustees who stepped away at some point during the pandemic and haven’t yet worked Alliance events back into their routine. It’s a great time for these leaders and their teams to re-engage and renew their commitment to an ethical Omaha business community. Regardless of industry or company size, there’s value to be found in showing up and joining the conversation. Engaged Trustees will assure a strong foundation from which we can continue to grow and welcome new leaders and businesses to our alliance.

We have an incredible trustee base and I’m looking forward to a year of learning and meaningful dialogue around business.

Having a Heart for Ethics

WHY ETHICS WORK IS SO IMPORTANT TO US

This time of year triggers hope that Winter is coming to an end, warmer temperatures are near, and feelings of love and appreciation for those in our lives who help make the world a better place. We at the Business Ethics Alliance thought you’d like to hear from some of those closest to us and why we all have a heart for ethics and our work.

Mark Pohl, Business Ethics Alliance Board Chair and Business Unit Programs & Planning Manager, Utility Operations, Omaha Public Power District

A shared commitment to ethics is really a commitment to working with others and serving the community with integrity, honesty, and generosity. When we all operate with ethics, we have confidence and trust in the actions of others, and we support each other in providing perspective when the ethical path is nuanced or complex.

Madeline Moyer, Business Ethics Alliance Board Vice Chair and SVP, Diversity & Inclusion Officer, Market Manager, Security National Bank

I believe that Ethics guides us to make the world a better place through the choices we make. Ethics helps us make decisions that create positive impacts and keeps us away from unjust outcomes. We all have great responsibility in helping to shape the Ethical culture for the greater Omaha community.

Patricia Kearns, Business Ethics Alliance Trustee Chair and President/ CEO of QLI, Inc.

It’s essential for building trust amongst team members, a sense of community within the organization, and ultimately a high level of team member engagement that leads to terrific business outcomes.

I need to work with people I trust, and people who have ethics as part of their core strategies tend to be trustworthy people. I rely on a lot of other players to make all the pieces

STRENGTHENING RURAL COMMUNITIES

MIDWEST GROWTH PARTNERS IMPACTS, SERVES AG INDUSTRY

For Ben Fogle, partner at Midwest Growth Partners, serving investors, employees and portfolio company leaders is his priority day in and day out.

Founded in 2013, Midwest Growth Partners is a private fund manager currently managing $260 million of committed private capital across three funds.

“We offer business owners operating food and agricultural related companies capital to facilitate liquidity in an orderly business succession transitions, honoring the legacies of past owners and employees, and make growth equity investments in quality, growing companies that are managed by great people who share our cultural values and are located in overlooked and underserved rural communities,” Fogle said.

According to Fogle, the company’s Midwestern values and beliefs offer a strong cultural fit, as business owners looking to transition to retirement or partner with a growth equity capital partner care deeply about the continued well-being of their employees and customers.

“We don’t have a one size fits all investment mentality, but rather have developed a market reputation for offering flexible structures to meet the needs of each transaction,” Fogle said.

Fogle, who has been a member of EO Nebraska for three years, said the organization has made a significant impact on both his professional and personal life.

“It’s a combination of the preparation for the monthly forum meeting — requiring self-reflection — and the experiences shared during the meetings that result in real growth,” Fogle said. “As business owners, this time is decidedly a time for us to focus on working ‘on’ vs. ‘in’ our business, family and self. Our forum has formed deep personal relationships for which I am grateful.”

Ultimately, Fogle said investing in small businesses is investing in people, which is what makes his work especially rewarding.

MEDICAL SOLUTIONS EARNS HIGH RANK ON GLASSDOOR’S BEST PLACES TO WORK 2023 LIST

Medical Solutions, one of the largest healthcare talent ecosystems, has been honored with a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award recognizing the Best Places to Work 2023. The company sits at number 16 out of 100 total ranked large companies in the United States.

To create the list of 100 companies, Glassdoor studied the quality, quantity, and consistency of reviews left on company profiles between October 2021 and October 2022. Companies could not nominate themselves to be considered; the rankings were created from reviews left by current and past employees from each organization. The rankings were generated from those organizations with an overall company rating of at least 3.5 stars on Glassdoor and a workplace factor rating of at least 2.5 stars.

Glassdoor found that Medical Solutions boasts a 4.5-star overall company rating and a 4.35-star workplace factor rating. Both ratings took into account more than nine attributes, including career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, and diversity and inclusion.

“To be recognized by Glassdoor as among the Best Places to Work reinforces what we’ve always known, that culture drives organizational success,” said Craig Meier, CEO, Medical Solutions. “We focus on the whole person and through our offerings, programs, and initiatives, we create a welcoming and inclusive environment and inspire our employees to be the best versions of themselves at work and in life. We put people first.”

Glassdoor is a global platform allowing employers to host job openings and information while allowing employees to share experiences at their current or previous company anonymously. Glassdoor has presented the Best Places to Work rankings since 2009, with this being the first time Medical Solutions has been included on the list.
