EQUESTRIAN EVENT MAKES LOCAL ECONOMIC IMPACT

For five days, the CHI Health Center will be transformed into a world-class equestrian event venue complete with competition and warm-up arenas and stables for the international competitors (both human and equine). Equestrian sports fans from around the world as well as local visitors will be able to enjoy not only the competition, but also educational exhibits, special presentations, a shopping expo and even multiple dining choices.

The FEI World Cup Finals have been hosted in major cities all over the world. So, why Omaha?

“Why not Omaha?” said Jon Garner, the event director. “What you really need is a mix of two things: The physical ability to pull it off, the venue structure, that type of thing … CHI Health Center, that was easy. And then the only

other thing you need is the will.”

A big part of that will was Burlington Capital CEO Lisa Roskens, who founded the Omaha Equestrian Foundation in 2010. In 2012, the organization introduced The International Omaha, a premier showjumping event repeated in years since. In 2017, Roskens’ vision of Omaha hosting FEI World Cup Finals became reality when Omaha was named the site for the individual world championships for jumping and dressage. The 2017 events, which took place at CHI Health Center (then CenturyLink Center), brought in 52,000 spectators from 38 countries and all 50 U.S. states and generated an estimated $19 million in economic impact including 11,000 room-nights for local hotels.

EQUESTRIAN EVENT MAKES LOCAL ECONOMIC IMPACT

FEI, the international governing body of equestrian sports, is short for the French name of the Switzerland-based organization: Fédération Équestre Internationale. A little over a century after it formed with eight affiliated nations, 136 National Equestrian Federations from all over the world are affiliated with the FEI today. The World Cup events have been hosted in various major cities over the years including Paris, Milan, Copenhagen, and Stockholm, and other U.S. cities, including Las Vegas and Lexington, Kentucky, have served as hosts. Omaha received considerable praise for the high quality of its venue as well as the community’s hospitality in 2017, Garner said, and the OEF team was confident it could be a 2023 contender.

“When we went to Lausanne (Switzerland) for our pitch meeting with the FEI, there was skepticism,” he said. “[But] the vision of what it was all came from Lisa. I think within maybe 30 seconds into her initial speech — and, frankly, because of her salesmanship — the FEI was sold. When you have a product like the World Cup, the FEI wants it to be in places that genuinely want it.”

In Omaha, the World Cup isn’t just one of numerous other large events like in larger host cities, Garner said.

“I think the city gets so behind it ... it is the major thing going on. And when there is a major event going on in the city of Omaha, the population is behind it,” said Garner, who hails from England. “I mean, you’ve got that prairie mentality of welcoming everybody – doesn’t matter what part of the world they’re from.”

Another plus is that the venue is large enough to house everything under one roof, including dozens of horses.

“What is fantastic for me is that the convention center is completely attached. So, once we’ve got the horses in there, they don’t have to go outside. In Las Vegas, for example, the stables were outside in a parking lot, then they warmed up for the practice in a separate tent,” Garner said, adding that at the CHI Health Center, “the conditions are perfect, from the moment they get off the truck and walk into the venue to the moment they leave the venue to get back on the truck.”

Spectators also have a great experience, Garner added.

“I think the audience has the opportunity to see the sport completely differently,” he explained. “They have the training, the warm-up ring, in the middle of the hospitality vendor area. When you’re just hanging out, you can sit and have a coffee or have a drink and a bite to eat and watch the horses prepare, which is one of the most fascinating pieces of the sport; you see them doing all that work prior to going in the ring. For the majority of venues, the warm-up ring is away from the public.”

The World Cup Finals is three events: the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Final, the FEI Dressage World Cup Final, and the Burlington Capital FEI Vaulting World Cup Final. Show jumping is probably the most-recognized competition category for any local audience. Dressage, sometimes described as “horse ballet,” judges the horse’s obedience and gait as well as the partnership and communication between rider and horse as they perform specific movements. Vaulting is often described as gymnastics or dance on horseback, and its roots in circus entertainment are evident. All three equestrian sports are exciting to watch, Garner said, and appeal to people of all ages.

“It’s for everybody and anybody,” he said. “I think that’s one of the things that make equestrian sport special.”

FEI World Cup Finals are open to the public. Tickets can be purchased online at omaha2023.fei.org.

In addition to the competition, visitors can enjoy live demonstrations by award-winning equestrians as well as educational exhibits and an international trade show. A wide variety of food and drink is also available. The event will also feature some uniquely local content.

“As we were developing ideas and plans for our education and entertainment program for the World Cup, we recognized the opportunity to share a global stage with local nonprofit Bluebird Cultural Initiative and bring attention to authentic stories about the horse’s rich history in our region,” OEF CEO Julie Boilesen said. “The theme is ‘1723.’ We’re flashing back 300 years ago to a significant moment on the Great Plains when horses were transforming

Native American livelihood and culture. Horses became revered and honored members of tribes, responsible for providing security and for enhancing trade and commerce. We’ll be sharing those fascinating stories throughout the World Cup. We hope fans will enjoy listening and learning from Native American orators, musicians, historians and creatives as we celebrate the horse’s heritage and significance in this region.”

An Education Expo, free to the public, will feature horses in STEM exhibits as part of a partnership between OEF and Prairie STEM. The University of Nebraska at Omaha will also present a biomechanical exhibit that details the functional movements of both the horse and rider. Thousands of elementaryage students will visit the Expo on free field trips the week of the event.

Other highlights include Dr. Temple Grandin, a professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, leading a discussion of the special bond between neurodivergent people and animals. Grandin, who has autism, is a noted author and speaker on both autism and animal behavior. A Gallery of

Horses exhibit will provide an up-close experience with horses representing a variety of breeds. And a Friday autograph session will provide visitors with the opportunity to meet equestrian athletes from each sporting discipline.

There will even be a few special touches that won’t be revealed ahead of time, Garner said, including a Grammy-award winner singing the national anthem.

“It will surprise people when he turns up,” Garner said.

The final stages of preparation are near. Beginning March 29, 3,500 tons of horse footing — primarily sand, silt and clay and some additives like coatings, synthetic fibers and pieces of rubber — will be delivered in 16 dump trucks to create the competition surface for the event. Horses begin arriving March 31.

“I’ve been really blessed and honored to be a part of it. And I’ve been involved in the organization for well over 10 years now,” Garner said. “We’re excited and a little bit nervous. We’re going through final details … The train is definitely about to leave the station.”

ECONOMIC IMPACT EMPHASIZES NEED FOR INSURANCE PLANNING

The insurance industry hasn’t been spared from the many changes that the current economic environment is throwing our way. Insurance professionals across Nebraska – and the country – are working with customers to find the best options and get the most out of their insurance selections.

With inflation, insurance premiums on the rise, and specific questions surrounding what they need to feel adequately insured, customers of all kinds are doing research on policies. Insurance industry experts are well-versed in current insurance trends that are coming down the pipeline this year and are poised to answer questions about them.

Home Insurance

With rising homeowners insurance premiums, many homeowners are questioning if their coverage matches what they are paying for.

“Insurance is just trying to keep up with the increased building costs that are happening nationwide,” said Dustin Kowalewski, vice president at Chastain Otis. “Construction costs have changed so much, and a lot of people’s homes or commercial buildings are underinsured. So, we are seeing bigger rate increases. But with

that comes more coverage. We want to make sure that people have enough coverage on their properties. When compared to national trends, however, Nebraska tends to be less extreme and more stable in the major swing of things.”

With more people working from home, insurance experts also report an increase in questions about how that impacts their home insurance policy.

“With office equipment now present in residences and customers visiting personal properties, clients may need to review and update their policies,” said Heath Lichty, sales executive at FNIC. “Additionally, if clients have reduced their driving due to working from home, they may be eligible for discounts on their auto policy. As carriers rapidly adapt their coverage offerings, we believe it is crucial to have an open conversation with our clients about their changing insurance needs.”

Megan Hatch, commercial risk consultant from UNICO noted an area that needs more attention is home valuation.

“The insurance industry is in what we call a hard market, and thus the capacity of carriers has been reduced and the premiums have increased,” she said. “People are now looking for ways to manage the increase in cost and get more value-added services from their insurance brokers. The increase in inflation has

impacted the cost to repair, replace or rebuild structures. As a result, one area we are seeing the impact is the need to increase the value of buildings, to ensure if there were to be a loss, adequate limits are in place to rebuild or repair.”

Life Insurance

Marlon Shkaidy, financial advisor at Mutual of Omaha Investor Services noted, that the majority of customers he has interacted with recently are looking for greater assurance that their policies will cover them in the event of an emergency or time of crisis.

“The pandemic increased the urgency with which customers looked for insurance coverage,” he said. “Customers want to make sure existing coverage is adequate to create security and that policies will deliver as promised.

“I predominantly sell life insurance, and the trends I have seen in Nebraska are toward a faster, simplified underwriting process, more adoption of doing business digitally, and a greater consumer interest in permanent life insurance over term insurance. During times of uncertainty, such as those faced during the COVID19 pandemic, customers want to know if they are adequately insured, and they are looking for guidance in making insurance decisions – thus relying more and more on the expertise of insurance agents. Customers are also looking to understand insurance products in plain and simple terms to help them make sound decisions.”

Natural Disaster Coverage

Natural disasters continue to impact the world and Nebraska specifically saw several storms that prompted both home and business owners to determine if their policies will cover damages.

“Unfortunately, Nebraska was struck by multiple strong storms last year, resulting in losses exceeding $2 billion,” Lichty said. “As a result, several of our carriers have found it challenging to operate in the state, and we have observed frequent changes to rates, coverage, and deductibles as companies try to improve their position. Our clients are understandably concerned and have been asking many questions about how their policies are being affected. They want to know if it’s time to switch to a different

company that offers a more competitive price.”

Lichty noted that the insurance industry was also hit with a wave of unexpected events that impacted rates.

“Several carriers faced unprecedented losses due to severe storms occurring simultaneously with a surge in building supply prices,” he said. “As a result, carriers are now providing substantial inflation adjustments to home policies to ensure adequate coverage for consumers. These inflation adjustments can be as high as 20%, which is one of the primary reasons for the rise in home insurance premiums.”

Health Care

Finding the right health insurance plan is always a big decision that requires a lot of research and forethought. Whether you are the employer coming up with specific health care options for your

employees in 2023, or you’re the employee looking to find which one offers the best coverage for you and your family, health plan selections take time. Rising deductibles and premiums are also a big factor, both for businesses and their employees.

Howard Shandell, president of Midwest Benefit Advisors, recommended that employers rethink how they have always offered benefits, but at the same time, focus their attention on communicating well and offering opportunities for employees to ask questions.

“People are looking for guidance and are trying to find a sustainable health care plan that won’t bankrupt them,” he shared. “I tell people to look outside the status quo.

“The benefits that they’ve been offering for 20 or 30 years aren’t the same and I think the employers that are having success are the ones that are embracing what we call ‘next-generation strategies.’ Also, I think it’s important that employers have year-

round communication and engagement programs. When you’re spending so much money on that benefit, it’s critically important to talk about benefits throughout the year rather than just once a year.”

Shkaidy agreed, sharing that communication and education go hand in hand.

“In my experience, as long as employers offer good insurance options, the attraction and retention of employees comes down to how well they understand their insurance benefit,” he said. “I would encourage employers to spend time educating their employees on how their insurance works and what it covers, not only that it is offered.”

Planning is Key

To combat rising costs due to inflation and prepare for what other changes may come in 2023 and beyond, it is important to stay on top of current trends and plan for insurance coverage that protects you in an unforeseen circumstance.

“Trends we can expect to continue to see are increases in premiums across all lines of insurance, anywhere from 3%-25%,

with the exception of workers’ compensation, which in some cases we are seeing a decrease,” Hatch said. “In working with business owners, we see many people wanting to better understand what they are paying for and what their insurance covers. Businesses across all industries are feeling the effects of the pandemic, which include labor shortages, supply chain disruptions and social inflation. People are looking for ways to not only manage their risk but manage their insurance costs.”

Reviewing policies will help identify any areas in policies needing updates.

“Inflation, much like COVID-19, has created tremendous strain on consumers. This strain translates to customers thinking more deeply about their financial position and the need to insure what they have worked so hard to create,” Shkaidy said. “Customers are even more determined to hold onto or acquire adequate insurance coverage. The most important piece of advice is to avoid a ‘set it and forget it’ mindset to insurance. It’s important to review your coverage on an annual basis and seek out expert advice when making insurance decisions. The best time to do insurance planning is before you need it.”

Over the next decade, the insurance industry in Nebraska will see a large generational turnover in many family-owned agencies.

One of the biggest concerns of Independent Insurance Agents of Nebraska (IIAN) members is finding quality candidates to fill positions, according to Executive Director Anne Ames.

“Finding a new generation of leaders in all types of agencies is a priority,” Ames said.

Founded in 1907 as the Nebraska Association of Local Insurance Agents, IIAN today represents over 500 independent insurance agencies and has more than 2,000 member agents throughout the state. The association is organized under a board of directors, but the CEO and five staff members run the daily

Organizational Focus

IIAN works to provide resources and services that allow Nebraska independent insurance agents the opportunity to grow and reach their potential. It does this through legislative advocacy, educational programs, marketing resources, notifying members of current events, offering competitive products and resources, partnering with industry vendors and fostering a community with fellow independent agents, and much more.

“Our overall goal is to ensure that [independent insurance

priorities and is active in the Nebraska Legislature to voice both concerns and support for bills that we have identified,” Ames said. “We also work with the National Association of Independent Agents and Brokers of America to address legislative issues that exist on a national level. IIAN has a local PAC for Nebraska and supports our national InsurPAC as well.”

The organization works in tandem with its national offices to help agents with marketing, social media, market access and a variety of promotions.

IIAN also operates a for-profit side, Nebraska Agency Services Corporation, which provides insurance products for agents, including business liability policies.

The Next Five Years

Going forward, IIAN will work toward improving market access options for its members.

“We want to make sure that our members are able to find new customers and not lose potential customers to onlineonly companies,” Ames said. “It is our goal to make sure that

Nebraskans understand the tremendous value that comes along with working with an independent insurance agent and the personal service that agent is able to provide—both on the front end and when problems and claims arise.”

A top priority is providing outreach to the youth in Nebraska, in particular through the organization’s college outreach programs at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska at Omaha and University of Nebraska at Kearney.

“Insurance is a solid career path with many varying options in terms of work and we want to make sure that younger people take that into consideration when making career choices,” Ames said.

Another top-tier goal is to assist IIAN’s agencies with remaining relevant.

“As technology changes and more things are digitized it’s easier than ever to find services online without having to interact with a human,” Ames said. “We want to make sure Nebraskans know that personalized service from an independent agent provides them with a higher quality of product and a relationship that they can count on.”

What began as an antiquing hobby has morphed into a full-fledged business endeavor for entrepreneurs Ben and Jess Loseke, who co-founded Midwest Barrel Co. The husband and wife duo officially launched the company in 2015, combining Ben’s background and connections in the viticulture industry with Jess’ background in business to hone in on reselling wine barrels.

“We started selling wine barrels for decor purposes and then learned that breweries were using them to age beer,” Jess Loseke said. “Over the next couple of years, we transitioned to selling more to breweries, which is now our primary market.”

Today, Midwest Barrel Co. sells to customers internationally and continues to expand its offerings. Recently, the business introduced a line of BBQ smoking wood made from barrels that previously held spirits. This new product was inspired by the company’s goal to be as close to zero waste as possible.

“We are always looking to add innovation to an older industry and we try to make doing business as easy as possible by removing any barriers,” Jess Loseke said.

In 2020 when the pandemic hit and some businesses were scaling back, Jess Loseke saw an opportunity to hit the

gas pedal. The company grew quickly and she found herself trying to lead through situations that she had never been through. This feeling of loneliness pushed her to join EO Nebraska.

“I realized EO was exactly what I needed so that I could learn from other entrepreneurs who were going through the same challenges without having to recreate the wheel myself,” Loseke said. “It’s a very safe place to learn and it’s not a place of competition. Instead, it’s a place of lifting one another up.”

As a growth-minded individual, Loseke has big plans for the future. For right now, she is most excited to continue interacting with new customers in new industries.

“My role as the leader of the company is curator of stories,” Loseke said. “Every person has a story and the product that we sell is being used to help tell their story, whether it’s through craft beer or a BBQ experience.”
