COVER story WATIE WHITE, ARTIST AND ENTREPRENEUR

THE ART OF business

PICTURING WATIE WHITE AS BOTH ARTIST AND ENTREPRENEUR Watie White’s art has been exhibited at numerous institutions from Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, to Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney and Omaha’s own Joslyn Art Museum — not to mention countless pieces in private and public collections. He’s spoken at many prestigious art events and been a visiting artist at several art schools. In recent years, his studio has produced public art projects like 100 People, Benson Mural Project and New Nebraskans in collaboration with local entities including Habitat for Humanity of Omaha, Immigrant Legal Center, Omaha Housing Authority and Omaha Public Schools. There’s no question that White is creatively successful. At his open studio event held annually to coincide with Berkshire Hathaway weekend, however, visitors often express curiosity about how an artist can also be commercially successful. The affable artist said he finds some of the misconceptions amusing. “I get the questions about, ‘How do you make a living?’ ‘Do you live on this?’ ‘Do you sleep in this room?’ They’re a little bit disbelieving

that this is a way a real person can live and work in the world … I think they are actively challenging their own understanding of how someone has their own sustainable creative practice,” he said. “They think that if you’re an artist, it must be fun and must be silly; you must goof around all day … Well, I think we have a different picture in our mind about what’s going on in this situation.” In actuality, White has a lot in common with other successful entrepreneurs.

Education

To begin with, he’s educated. White is a graduate of Carleton College (Minnesota) and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. “When I went to college, I never questioned if I would be doing art or not. The question was, ‘How do I get to do more of it and do things that are meaningful?’” he said, adding that attending a liberal arts college as an undergraduate was a good fit. “I learned how to ‘learn’ things, how to think about what I’m being

taught, and how to put that into some sort of context and build a way of seeing what the issue is from multiple perspectives so I can more fully and wholistically understand what I’m looking at,” he said.

Mentoring

Like other entrepreneurs, White has found mentors to provide insight and guidance and now mentors others. “It’s impossible to not try to pay it forward,” he said. “I wound up collecting mentors along every step of the way … I’ve been incredibly fortunate where these people who had so much understanding of their own life and their own trajectory could share that and were eager to share that with me.”

Motivation and Passion

White has great passion for his work, something Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett himself is known for promoting in the oft-quoted statement, “In the world of business, the people who are most successful are those who are doing what they love.” “I never found anything that was more interesting or that was going to be rewarding in a deeper way, a more holistic way,” White said. “It’s a very holistic thing. It’s very hard to separate my work from everything else I value in my world and in my life … The idea is that whatever I’m working on, I’m learning something from, I’m growing.”

Discipline and Productivity

White said he draws, paints or makes prints virtually every day, and that the process itself provides inspiration.

“I learned that I have to investigate a lot of things, that my work is better when I work quickly, and that there is a certain amount of resolution that I need to get — but that if I do absolutely everything that I can think of to a painting I will kill the thing in that painting that is good,” he said. “I have to leave a little bit of something that is still unfinished.” White seldom works on commission, which means he’s built up an impressive body of work. People ask him why he continues to produce art that he can’t always cash in on right away. “Art is not something you can hard-sell. You can’t convince someone that they love it; either they love it and are thinking about it or they are unmoved,” he said. “I’m engaged in a lot of things. I work with a lot of people and on a lot of projects in addition to what I’m making out of the studio. When I think about my practice in totality, I see everything that I’m doing … each one is its own thing, its own eventual stream of income, its own direction of research and personal growth and education, and all of them feed the whole.” Experience has taught him to be confident his artworks will move at some point. “I may like it today and may not know how to sell it. Eventually it will find its place somewhere. I’m building up this inventory of things that I have even when my sales are relatively low,” he said. “The catalog is still gaining and growing.” He added, “I can’t help but be encouraged to make more and to make bigger things and better things and more ambitious things and things that try to reach even more people. It’s all building up to the most important things that are still yet to come.”

NEW NAME, GREATER IMPACT

PCCF BECOMES COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR WESTERN IOWA CONTENT COURTESY OF COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR WESTERN IOWA

(Council Bluffs, IA) – It is an exhilarating time in southwest and western Iowa, and Pottawattamie County Community Foundation and its Board of Directors have observed and identified growth opportunities and the need for increased services and philanthropic support. Over the last 15 years, the Community Foundation has learned how necessary it is to build funding sources for areas of need, where caring and committed donors can invest their charitable dollars in ways that fill their passion, while creating lasting change in our communities. Two “Field of Interest” funds have been established at the Community Foundation – the Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa and Southwest Iowa Mental Health and Substance Abuse Fund – both created to support nonprofit organizations in nine counties throughout southwest Iowa while increasing access to philanthropic funding in a holistic and regional way. In addition to the new funding sources, the Community Foundation established a “Make It Happen” fund development program to help nonprofit organizations build leadership within their organizations, and to assist them in developing a rich culture of philanthropy in the communities they serve. In late May, the Community Foundation will also bring SHARE Iowa to our region to support nonprofit organizations through donor engagement and a high-level of donor-centered service. All these elements have led the Community Foundation to a place in its mission that has grown beyond Pottawattamie County and into the western Iowa region. A name change from Pottawattamie County Community Foundation to the Community Foundation for Western Iowa better reflects the Foundation’s mission to build community through giving while being a leader in donor-centric philanthropy. “The growth of the Community Foundation reflects the awesome and inspiring support of our community,” said Tony Tauke, Community Foundation for Western Iowa Board Chair. “We have seen a substantial increase in the size of gifts and in the number of donors. Individual donoradvised and special needs funds have mushroomed beyond Pottawattamie County borders. This expansion is reflected in the new addition to our once little office which was completed due to the generous contribution and strong support of the Lakin Foundation. This seedling organization started nearly fifteen years ago and has grown into a fruitful tree of philanthropy with many branches, relationships, and donors that encompass more than just Pottawattamie County. We as a Board see the potential for growing larger and creating more impact over the coming years.” Over the last year, area stakeholders, donors, committee members, and the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors

conversed in a series of meetings and events to determine the direction and strategic vision. The consensus was to choose a name that better reflects the work the Community Foundation does in our region: supporting vibrant communities; engaging nonprofit organizations; and building a culture of philanthropy. The Community Foundation was established in 2008, by four founding board members, Bobbette Behrens, Dean Fischer, Marie Knedler, and Kelly Summy, with the help of an initial grant from the Iowa West Foundation. In its most recent annual report published in April, the Community Foundation shared the incredible growth and impact that donors and fund holders have created in southwest Iowa. Last year, investors awarded 269 grants totaling an astounding $1.9 million dollars to a variety of nonprofit organizations in focus areas such as community betterment, education, human services, and arts & culture. This is an 18.79% increase in grant awards from 2020 ($532,504). The investor granting, coupled with the Foundation’s grant awards, was $2.2 Million. The Community Foundation invites you to attend its ribbon cutting and building dedication on Monday, May 16, from 8:00am to 10:00am at 536 E Broadway in Council Bluffs. The event will celebrate the new name announcement, as well as the beautiful building renovation and addition generously funded by the Charles E. Lakin Foundation. The Community Foundation will officially dedicate the building as the Florence M. and Charles E. Lakin Center for Community Giving.

BANKS ADDRESS INFLATION, SUPPLY CHAIN & THE COMMUNITY BY MICHELLE LEACH

TIM MITTAN

DISTRICT DIRECTOR, NEBRASKA DISTRICT OFFICE, SBA

Grappling with the ups and downs of inflation, interest rates and potential spikes in the cost of borrowing and doing business has always been “all in a day’s work” for business owners and entrepreneurs. The time of this writing, the Federal Reserve took among its most aggressive actions in 20-plus years to curb inflation – a half-point interest rate hike, equivalent

to two “typical” hikes. Such historic measures are also occurring as organizations continue to wade through the wide-rippling effects of the global pandemic, no less persistent supply chain and talent challenges. “We have not seen this type of inflationary increase in almost 30 years,” said Tim Mittan, the district director with the Nebraska District Office of the U.S.

Small Business Administration. “Most small businesses in existence today have never had to experience this. “The first thing to do,” he continued, “is not panic. The hard part about this type of inflation is that it is not just an increase in costs, but it is compounded with supply chain issues as well.” Mittan reinforced the importance of understanding all of the economic issues

and available resources at present. “Here at the SBA, we believe solid information and education are vital to help with growing concerns,” he said. “We rely on our financial partners and educational resource volunteers to help all of our small business owners.” Interestingly, Mittan noted the office has not fielded many questions about inflation because “most businesses are

still in COVID recovery.” To its important aforementioned financial partners, Mittan said the SBA works with several lending organizations around the state. “We work with traditional lenders and microlenders alike to help make funding available to small businesses when they need it,” he said, cautioning that, “we do not and cannot control interest rates. We work with lenders who help set the rates based off the current [Annual Percentage Rate]. As with any lending initiative, rates can change during processing. So, business owners need to take that into consideration when the loan is being finalized.”

Additionally, Mittan said his team is in the process of developing a workshop series to support businesses with challenges presented by inflation. “These workshops cover topics such as alternative funding for when business owners get into a situation where they may need operating capital; marketing strategies, including traditional and creative social media tactics to help improve visibility; and small business economics to help business owners truly understand their bottom lines,” he said. “The important lesson is to not cut back on what will most effectively help you recover and get through the mire caused by the pandemic. Marketing should

increase during an inflationary period, not be reduced.” Mittan also encouraged readers to learn different tactics to stabilize their businesses by approaching those people who have already weathered such storms. “When we are contacted by a concerned business owner, our first avenue of help is to introduce them to SCORE,” he said, a reference to its volunteer mentorship network. “They will then be assigned a mentor who will talk to them or work with them to develop a plan that will best suit their needs … they should never go through a hardship alone.”

In this vein, Mittan also referred to support from the likes of Nebraska Business Development Centers, women business centers, Center for Rural Affairs, and the Nebraska Enterprise Fund. “We also encourage business owners to talk to their local bankers as well as the economic development specialists in their communities,” he said. “These resources are there to help them. It may be tough going at times, but there are always waves in economics. Even though we are on an inflationary increase in that wave, the downward slope will be coming soon.”

Local Banking Community

When asked about how Centris Federal Credit Union has responded to choppy inflationary waters, President and CEO Steve Swanstrom said the organization has raised the dividend rate paid to members on deposits. “This will help our members earn more income on their deposit accounts,” he said. Inflation, as well as “regulatory burdens,” were cited as among foremost industry trends and challenges, with Swanstrom saying that these two factors “will make it more challenging for financial institutions to maintain low interest rates and costs for people who want to borrow money to purchase a home, a vehicle, a vacation, home repairs, home remodeling, or anything QuarterPageMBJ_427.qxp_Layout 1 4/27/22

that requires a loan.” Pivoting from industrywide to organizationwide developments, Swanstrom’s comments come on the heels of Centris celebrating its first year at its new headquarters at Sterling Ridge (132nd and Pacific streets). “The facility has been received very positively by the community and by our employees who come to work every day,” he said. Additionally, he said by end of June, Centris is launching a new technology to make getting a loan faster and more efficient. “Every day we search for ways to introduce new technology or leverage existing systems that make it easier for our members to do business with Centris,” Swanstrom 2:15 PM Pageadded. 1

Core Bank Senior Vice President Real Estate David Hartman also referred to how interest rates have been rising to curb higher prices and slow demand with inflation at historic levels. “This, of course, has caused concern for homeowners and prospective homeowners whose home construction projects have experienced delays due to supply chain issues and labor shortages related to the construction industry,” he said. “To combat some of those concerns, we’re offering longer-term rate locks as well as rolling out some competitive portfolio products, which have been well received and something we plan to continue long term.” Noting how every day they spend time talking to customers about financial needs, Chief Administrative Officer Heather Wilderman said they continue to enjoy personalized service and working with a financial institution that can offer a variety of products and services. She, too, added that feedback has included the need for a faster, more convenient loan approval process. “With that in mind, we invested in and rolled out RapidTRAC Loan — an online automated loan approval platform that allows businesses to apply for smaller term loans or lines of credit and receive instant decisioning on the loan,” Wilderman explained. “If approved and once any necessary documents are uploaded, Core Bank funds the loan in three business days.” In turn, she said the business can complete the entire process at their convenience, where and when they want to. “Local businesses are the backbone of our community and deepening our relationship by providing services that leads to their growth is our goal,” Wilderman added. She also said Core Bank has implemented a new payment system within its online banking dashboard, which allows business customers to have integrated invoicing and digital payment software “at their fingertips.” They can send professional electronic invoices and collect payments electronically. There is also a secure payment link, she noted, that allows customers to e-pay conveniently. Similarly, Wilderman anticipates that businesses will see a lot of tech advances offered by financial

Page 10 • May 13, 2022

institutions over the next year, as fintech partnerships flourish. “We’ve seen a lot of advances on the consumer side, now we are going to see a large push on the business side of banking,” she said. “There will be more auto-decisioning lending options … Financial institutions will offer additional embedded finance options directly in their online banking platform, as well as other embedded third-party services.” Wilderman continued: “Financial institutions are attuned to the fact some of their customers are in cryptocurrency and want to assist their customers in that realm as well.”

Practices to Thrive By

SBA Nebraska District Office Economic Development Specialist and Public Information Officer Elizabeth Yearwood presents to small businesses about what they should do before and after disasters. Yearwood said that she covers 10 key “to-do’s,” starting with having a disaster plan and cash on hand for emergencies. A relationship should be established with one’s lender. She also suggested the need to “digitally transform your business” and to have a “heavy focus on marketing.” “Consider pivoting to accommodate new circumstances,” she added. Yearwood indicated that maintaining good credit, adequate insurance coverage, and good communication with staff vendors and customers is critical. Lastly, she emphasized using the free assistance that is available via SBA resource partners. “Many of the businesses that were successful during and after the pandemic were the ones that either already had or were able to quickly put in place these things,” she said. Yearwood also directed readers toward SCORE recommendations, which categorized sustaining businesses through challenging times or disasters into more than a dozen areas; notably, an assessment of one’s finances. Look, for instance, at negotiating payments with vendors, lenders, landlords and creditors. Explore cutting expenses and adding new revenue streams. Ensure there

OIL SUPPLIER

MERGER STEVE PHILLIPS, PRESIDENT, ALLIED OIL

The Next Frontier

ALLIED OIL & SUPPLY ENTERS NEW CHAPTER As a company with more than six decades in business, there’s a lot about Allied Oil & Supply that screams, “heritage.” As of Jan. 1 this year it began a new chapter in operations, merging with Heritage Petroleum. “The concept of bringing these two organizations together was very simple,” said Steve Phillips, president of Allied Oil. “We’re very, very strong on the lubricant side and the diesel exhaust fluid side and they’re very strong on the diesel fuel side of things. Those synergies are going to come together to be able to provide a stronger, more sustainable organization going forward.” The complementary product sectors position the Omahabased operations and its Indiana-based counterpart to maximize market opportunities, Phillips said. It does so at a time when the transportation industry is running full tilt to meet the challenges of the nation’s supply chain. “Locally I think the biggest piece is we’ll end up with fuel as an additional product line we will be selling, diesel fuel specifically,” Phillips said. “Therefore, we expect the original Allied side of the

business will realize significant growth related to diesel fuel and the original Heritage geography will realize significant growth related to lubricants and lubricant services. “A large portion of Allied’s customer base is fleet-related and that’s going to be an opportunity. There’ll be expansion of additional trucks, additional drivers and obviously additional business related to that within the current Allied structure.”

Decades of Experience Allied Oil & Supply was founded in 1958 by Conrad Heinson, onetime salesman for Interstate Oil in Kansas City. Having learned Interstate was dropping out of the Nebraska and Iowa markets, Heinson pounced, launching Allied and servicing those markets. Over the next 40 years, the company grew its locations as well as its product line, introducing retail tire sales, bulk oil storage tanks and a Michelin Truck Retread plant by the turn of the century. In 2003, the company branched into industrial services and in 2011 changed its name to Allied Oil & Tire.

The name changed back in 2019 with the sale of the tire division to Bauer Built Tire & Service, but growth and expansion continued practically to the start of negotiations with Heritage in mid-2021. At that time, Allied had grown to serve Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota. Heritage Petroleum, an 85-year-old, family-owned petroleum distributor based in Evansville, Indiana, serves customers in Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri.

of brands in its combined line of lubricants, fuel and diesel exhaust fluid products. This helps insulate the newly merged company from kinks in the supply chain better than competitors with narrower product lines. “Our vendors are definitely affected by supply chain issues and they’ve been putting all of the distributors on allocation,” he said. “One of the benefits that we have is that we have a number of different vendors across multiple brands and we’ve been able to provide product to our customers where we believe other distributors have had challenges in doing that.” A New Era Still, the pandemic hasn’t been without its hiccups for both firms, One casualty of the merger is the Allied name. Phillips said while specifically as it applies to managing remote workers. Having come existing branding will remain in place as far as its private label through that, Phillips said the new company is ready for whatever the products are concerned, the corporate moniker will be changed over to market holds next. Heritage Petroleum at some point. Beyond that, the company’s desire “We’ve had remote working prior to COVID and we have it to aggressively grow both jobs and market share post-merger remains today,” he said. “My safety director is in Wichita, Kansas; I’ve got unchanged. a VP of operations in Kansas City and another VP of operations in “The intent is to pursue acquisitions once we get fully integrated,” Sioux Falls. My vice president of sales has always been in Kansas City. said Phillips, who assumes the duties of president of operations My controller’s here in Omaha. We’ve always been somewhat spread with the new entity. “We’re setting ourselves up for that. We’ll be out, if you will. putting ourselves in a position to be able to acquire additional “During COVID, we’ve extended that beyond those few workers companies going forward. and we’ve confirmed that people can get their work done and do “We’ll also be adding additional jobs; there’s 170 employees with what they need to do in order to make things happen. We’re pleased Heritage and there’s 160 with Allied, and we see ourselves hiring more and impressed by our folks who make sure that they take care of our people through this process and into the future.” Phillips said another advantage of the deal is leveraging the companies’ variety customers and accomplish their tasks.”

GROUNDWORKS

Expanding Footprint to Omaha

GROUNDWORKS ACQUIRES LOCAL FOUNDATION REPAIR COMPANY Groundworks, one of the country’s fastest-growing foundation and water management solutions companies, has opened its first customer-facing location in Omaha. The company was founded by Matt Malone in 2016 after seeing a need in the industry for quality workmanship in the area of foundation, basement waterproofing, crawl space, and concrete repair. Headquartered in Virginia Beach, Groundworks began when Malone noticed that the industry was fragmented, with far too many fly-by-night contractors and limiting business models that were not meeting the demands or expectations of homeowners. He also recognized that there were not enough meaningful career opportunities for employees and their families. “Groundworks saw a better way,” he said. So, he set out to do something different, and in the last five years, his efforts have proven successful. Recently, Groundworks acquired CLS Foundation Repair, which has been in business in the Midwest for more than three decades. This was Groundworks’ 23rd acquisition since opening. With its new location in Omaha, the company now has 19 brands with 48 offices, offering a variety of services related to foundation and water management solutions.

Focused on People The company has over 250 employee owners, with more than 4,000 total employees. Together, the team has served more than 1.5 million customers around the country since inception. “Our employees benefit from our company’s merit-based bonus programs and profit-sharing program,” Malone said. “We have built an employee culture of owners who get up every day and act like owners. We have aggressive incentive programs that allow men and women who work at this company to earn a living that will change their lives to serve their families.” Groundworks already has 50 employees in the Omaha office and will continue to build on the positive reputation that CLS has worked hard to build. “CLS has been successful in the region because of their quality work and the relationships they’ve created in the community and with their customers,” Malone said. “Groundworks will continue to build on that reputation by investing in our employees, marketing, and infrastructure.” Andy Hansen, general manager of Groundworks Omaha, said CLS and its employees have been a part of the Omaha community

for many years now, delivering service to residents when they needed foundation repair and waterproofing services the most. “Now as Groundworks, we will continue that mission to create safer, more comfortable, and valuable homes in Nebraska,” Hansen said. “With Groundworks, our business has received an infusion of resources that benefit both our local employees and customers.”

Focused on Omaha Groundworks’ mission is simply to protect, repair and improve each customer’s greatest asset: their home. Malone is a strategic thinker and felt that servicing Omaha would be something that would not only benefit his company, but the residents in the area, too. The company offers warranty-backed permanent solutions, service after each sale, quality products, and trusted local professionals that know the area and can tailor solutions to ensure homes are protected long into the future. “Groundworks is challenging the status quo by providing better products and services to more customers, growing family businesses beyond what would have been otherwise possible,” Malone said. In addition to the positive impact the company will have on local communities, buildings, and the workforce, Groundworks is also committed to giving back to the state in whatever ways possible.

Currently, the company is sponsoring the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and it has been named an Official Foundation Company of the Huskers.

Future Outlook During the pandemic, the company saw the need for home services rise at an unprecedented rate. Groundworks wants to position itself as a leader, building one of the first national foundation solutions company in the United States. Malone said Groundworks’ niche of foundation services is one of the most important and most complex service offerings a company can provide. That’s why Malone said he and his team work hard to showcase their expertise so customers will learn to trust them to do the job right, the first time. Currently, there are plans to expand operations by opening additional Groundworks offices in Nebraska, and when this happens efforts will be concentrated on hiring local talent. “We are relentlessly focused on delivering solutions our customers can trust, no matter where they live,” Malone said. “We know the Groundworks way of growth through investments, leadership development and bringing industry leading products and solutions to our customers will continue to make us successful in Nebraska and beyond.”

OFFICER MORISHA BROWN MAKES HISTORY DAILY

MORISHA BROWN, U.S. PROBATION AND PRETRIAL OFFICER

When Morisha Brown took her place as a U.S. probation and pretrial officer, she had no idea she was one of a few Black women in that type of role in the entire state. But nearly seven years into the role, she stands out for things much more important than race, bringing a mission mentality to her job helping the previously incarcerated re-engage as productive members of society. “What helps me be good at my job is an awareness of who I am and an appreciation for who other people are in their intersectionality and what caused them to be who they are,” she said. “As I’m interacting with people, I’m being aware and appreciative of the lived experiences that created who they are. That’s what allows me to serve people where they are versus whoever I think they should be based on my lived experience or my journey, my demographics.”

Desire To Serve Brown said working in criminal justice has been a longstanding goal dating back to her childhood where she’d watch Law & Order on television with her grandmother. But it wasn’t the “hook ‘em and book ‘em” that appealed to her; she saw criminal justice as a way to serve others who needed it. “My main motivation was to truly be a helper and allow people to be seen and treated well, despite what they’ve done,” she said. “I grew up in north Omaha and a lot of people have been cheering me on. People have been excited to see someone in this role who gets it, who will stand up and say everybody from north Omaha isn’t bad. I get to be that advocate.” In addition to her daily role, she also launched Career Emergence, a youth program that partners with community organizations to provide young people with hands-on experiences on the right side of the criminal justice system. “It started with a conversation around diversity and what are we doing about it,” she

said. “It boiled down to people not really knowing who we are and what we do. I had no idea what this job was until I was in grad school. There’s this whole other career that no one had ever talked to me about. “One of the things I appreciate about my office is they embrace that I bring a different perspective and that I value diversity. I’ve been given a lot of opportunity to bring in projects and do outreach efforts and things that I think not only will increase diversity but to bring about more inclusivity and understanding what we bring into our position impacts the lives of the people we serve.”

Sharing The Credit Brown has received numerous awards in her work but refused to talk about them because it goes against her belief that her role in parolees’ rehabilitation is merely as facilitator. She said any credit for the hard work goes to them. “I always tell my clients, I will not take credit for your success, and I will not take credit for your failure,” she said. “It can be so easy to be like, ‘Oh, I helped them.’ But the truth of the matter is, while our job is important in how we show up and how we influence and what interventions we put in their path, I can’t want it enough for someone else. They have to do the work in their life. “When that happens, it’s so beautiful to watch. It’s so beautiful to have a front row seat to that and be able to see positive longterm change. That’s part of our mission. PRESENTING SPONSOR That’s what we want.”

THOUGHTFUL BY DESIGN heads to SEDONA! JH INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO BRINGS SPACES TO LIFE As an avid lover of all things design, Julie Hockney aspires to utilize her passion and skillset to help others create their dream spaces. This desire led her to found JH Interior Design Studio, a full-service interior design firm specializing in both commercial and residential, in August 2007. Over the years, Hockney has realized that her work is about solving problems and enhancing environments. “I love when clients bring me a project that needs a solution,” she said. “Yes, we’re great at design, but we are also really great at bringing everything together while providing an excellent experience.” Hockney said she appreciates her clients, as they truly value a design consultant and respect the knowledge and experience that comes with hiring a professional. “We want our clients to be excited about design and also help us bring out their personal style and taste,” Hockney said. “We love that they trust us to execute their vision.” From the very first client meeting to the final space reveal, Hockney said care and attention to detail is given at every turn to ensure the entire process is seamless and successful.

Not only is the firm experiencing growth in the Omaha area, but it has expanded to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where a second branch was recently opened. This new endeavor opens the door to other potential markets, which Hockney looks forward to exploring. As a newer member of EO Nebraska, Hockney said the organization has helped her as a business owner in many ways. Over the past three years, she has enjoyed serving on the organization’s board and learning from fellow members. “I believe in surrounding myself with smart and good people,” she said. “It’s important to me in this stage of my career to be around like-minded business owners. It’s such a comfort to have that support, as well as to have a motivator to always be learning and doing better.” Address: 721 N. 98th Street, Omaha, NE 68114 Email: design@jhdesignomaha.com Phone: 402.934.3474 Website: https://jhdesignomaha.com Social Media: Facebook, Instagram
