Discussion of ChatGPT and adjacent AI tools’ potential effects on almost every industry are as seemingly ubiquitous as discourse on the “cloud” was a few years back.

The AI family also represents just one of many types of products and technologies that Midlands professionals have isolated as actively transforming the engineering industry, or that may be poised to do so in the future.

In recent years, Thiele Geotech has made significant investments in a new data management platform.

“[The platform] allows us to manage all of our test data,” said Robert K. Lapke, president and COO. “It came with an application that allows digital entry of test results in the field, which are automatically uploaded to the system where the data is then available for review and billing input by our project managers.

“Once reviewed and signed the data is published to a server that is accessible to our clients. So, they have all reports for a given project at their fingertips.”

When asked for insights into how the tech compares to its earlier-generation counterpart, Lapke said the former tech didn’t have any field application or the ability for e-uploads.

“Forms were filled out by our staff and had to be typed into our previous system,” he said. “The new system is much more efficient. This new software saves us significant time and money.”

Natural Resources Group Manager Andy Miller noted that Benesch recently invested in the purchase of Trimble GPS units and several drones for use in natural resources surveys and aerial photography, respectively.

“The new GPS units are smaller, more accurate, allow for payas-you-go variable horizontal accuracy ranging from 1 [centimeter] to 1 [meter], and allow for real-time data download to the cloud,” he said.

To the former investment, Miller said the GPS units allow for more efficient fieldwork and the collection of more accurate

data, while the drones allow a “unique capability” – documenting infrastructure and site changes before, during and after project implementation.

“Aerial photography has become key for monitoring public structures such as utilities and inspecting, public works and infrastructures like bridges and dams,” he said.

Support Systems

Snyder & Associates’ migration to digital delivery has required large investments in design software and equipment for its construction observation staff to

use to complete projects, according to Mike Geier, business unit leader and regional office manager for Omaha, Council Bluffs, and Sioux Falls.

“The migration to digital delivery completely changes the well-established design processes engineers have used for centuries to deliver projects,” Geier said. “Traditionally, when an infrastructure project was constructed, we sent out surveyor teams to take measurements to represent a three-dimensional world in two dimensions — first on paper, but for the last several decades in two-dimensional CAD files.”

Information on plan sheets would then be interpreted by contractors to construct 3D projects in the real world, with observation staff using tape measures and levels to make sure the project matches what the engineers drew.

“With digital delivery, everything stays in three dimensions,” Geier explained. “Snyder & Associates had to upgrade our entire design software platform to technology where the design process

on. GPS-enable rovers, too, compare the designed project to the constructed one – instead of levels and tape measures. Multiple design options may be reviewed in far greater detail.

In addition to measuring traditional illuminance and luminance, Michelle Eble-Hankins, senior lighting designer, said Alvine Engineering’s new spectrometer also measures spectral power distribution (SPD) to determine parameters not limited to color temp, color rendering index and “melanopic lux.”

“There are other meters that measure … SPD, but this meter is incredibly small, allowing it to easily be carried onto an airplane, making measurements around the country much more feasible,”

Eble-Hankins said. “The meter is also Bluetooth connected to a mobile device, which allows for the data files from a visit to be saved and then downloaded and analyzed after data collection.”

To the aforementioned term, melanopic lux, Eble-Hankins indicated this metric supports optimization of circadian lighting design as part of the WELL Building Standard.

“This metric is used to evaluate the impact of electric lighting on the body’s circadian system and is influenced by both the intensity and spectral power distribution of the light source,” she said. “We can use computer software to calculate melanopic lux during design but being able to now also measure it in the field is a huge advantage.”

This capability has supported two WELL projects thus far, including Alvine’s corporate headquarters.

Its low voltage tech group, IP Design Group, partnered with the Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, which Associate Principal and Acoustical Designer Jessica L. Hiatt said has “allowed us to amplify our acoustical design practices and collaborate on industry-oriented building acoustics research.” CONTINUED

Acoustical Designer Sam Underwood said a major benefit is an ability to use state-of-the-art university equipment; for instance, an acoustic camera and sound-intensity camera tracking system to detect leaks in “sound-isolating” partitions, to troubleshoot the source of excessive noise and to visually communicate such info to clients.

“Traditional methods of measuring sound isolation produce numbers that tell us how well a partition is performing — but they can’t show us why a partition is performing the way that it is,” he explained. “ …. historically, we would often have to make educated guesses about the controlling factors. Is it the lack of seals on a door? Is something hidden above the ceiling or buried within the wall? Multiple factors, both obvious and obscure, can be present, and it isn’t always easy to rank factors

by importance.”

In turn, he continued, acoustic imaging techniques capture “heat maps” of sound that clearly illustrate sources of sound transmission.

Tomorrow’s Tech, Today’s Best Practices

Going forward, Thiele Geotech’s Lapke referenced the promise of AI.

“Although artificial intelligence has been under recent scrutiny, I do think it will continue to change the way engineers evaluate and solve complex problems,” he said.

And, when asked to share his wisdom or “best practices” associated with new tech-driven investments, Lapke added: “After going through this platform change and embracing new

technologies, we have learned that it is important to stay on top of and embrace systems that increase efficiency and provide better service for our customers.”

Miller of Benesch also had a take on AI, specifically in a format like chatbots, as a game-changing technology.

“Professionals can work more efficiently and effectively by using this technology to find precedents for a particular engineering project type, for example, what are the names of bridges that used a particular structural design of interest? Or cost estimating, rendering and visualization, researching, writing emails, and taking notes,” he said.

Asked about tech that is being considered or monitored closely, Miller referenced wetland identification (or wetland predictive) modeling, which uses light detection and ranging (LiDAR) returns to create high-resolution digital elevation models. Such “DEMs” are then used to derive topographic metrics that indicate wetlands by describing the likes of near-surface soil moisture.

Field software, he added, includes automated wetland delineation to complete forms using tablets or handheld devices.

He urged those considering their own investments to not rush the process.

“Research the technology on your own, have the company selling equipment provide a demonstration and allow you to test products,” Miller noted.

Geier of Snyder & Associates referenced the industry’s quick movement toward a world where an infrastructure project’s “digital twin” exists in a virtual world.

He described this concept as such: “The digital twin will be used, not only by the contractor to construct the project but will be used by maintenance staff to maintain the project. Engineers need to be willing to grow and learn how to utilize the new technologies to have proper oversight over the design process.” Engineering is not unlike other industries, following the “exponential increase” in AI.

“It seems it was only a short time ago we talked about it as a future technology that was in movies and now it has real-world implications in our daily lives: Can AI optimize traffic signal timings in real-time based on changes in traffic? Can AI use maintenance data to prioritize when a bridge will need to be rehabilitated or replaced?” Geier remarked.

He noted the upfront investment – in terms of both employee time and upgrades. After all, to deliver on the digital, Snyder & Associates not only paid for the software but also completely revamped the standards and workspace set-up to effectively use the software. Also, Geier noted the initial hit to efficiencies as the technology is used to develop projects.

Jennifer Epstein, acoustical designer at IP Design Group, took a step back when asked to delve into future technologies; she said the organization asked two groupings of clients to its office to participate in an “ears-on experience.”

“ … we quite literally had them listen to our office walls,” she explained. “So, they could experience different levels of sound isolation in order to make informed decisions on their respective projects.”

Epstein noted how they found “great value” in the experience; however, she acknowledged it isn’t always feasible to experience different levels of sound isolation or different reverberation times in real-world situations.

“Auralizations – or audio simulations that are produced in order to demonstrate the effects of different acoustical treatments – are a newer technology that allows us to help clients make informed decisions, without having to travel to multiple spaces to have these different experiences,” she stated.

Possibilities

The newest transformative technology – artificial intelligence, or AI – is here and it’s transforming businesses and industries across the board. Once found only in the pages of sci-fi novels, artificial intelligence is changing the way companies assess their processes and serve their clientele but also brings myriad new challenges as far as security and the long-term implications of a brave new world.

“There’s a quote I keep seeing which is, paraphrased, ‘AI will only replace you if you don’t figure out how to use it,’” said Bobbi Christensen, chair of IP practice at Koley Jessen. “The use of AI should, in a perfect world, free up the time of a professional to provide higher-level services to their clients.

“At the same time, every ‘pro’ that I can list can also, in the wrong hands, be a ‘con’ and many of them will arise from simple

laziness or carelessness on the part of the user.”

Christensen said in the legal world, AI offers the opportunity for significant time savings while delivering greater accuracy in document creation.

“Some of the most positive applications in the AI field for legal purposes are the ability to automate routine work that consumes time,” she said. “It also has the potential to reduce or eliminate human error.

“An AI application that can scan a document and summarize its terms, as well as look for inconsistency in provisions or missing provisions, has the potential to provide great efficiency. It can also serve as the second pair of eyes for a document that a legal professional has been drafting or reviewing.”

AI TECHNOLOGY HAS FAR-REACHING APPLICATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

Big Benefits, Big Challenges

On the other hand, leaning too heavily on technology opens up wide-ranging ethical problems.

“An entire article could be devoted just to the biggest challenges or concerns of AI from a legal perspective,” she said. “The potential for malpractice and ethical violations is huge. You still have to review, and critically evaluate and challenge any content that is produced via AI. You can’t disclose client information. You have to watch for bias.”

In addition to adapting to the technology as a firm, Christensen said Koley Jessen attorneys are fielding more questions from clients about the legal ramifications of AI in their respective industries.

“We are getting a fair number of questions regarding intellectual property rights and ownership rights in content that is partially or wholly created by AI tools,” she said. “In general, it feels like clients are just trying to figure out how to issue-spot where the use of AI could get them in trouble. A lot depends on the industry you are in, how regulated that industry is, and how technology-dependent or content-dependent your business is.”

The technology is also heavily in play in the service and retail sector, according to Nate Decker, technology instructor and regional

AT

coordinator for the AIM Institute.

“AI can bring positive developments like personalized customer experiences, chatbots for instant customer support and sales forecasting for optimized inventory management,” he said. “As these advancements enhance the customer experience, they also will provide tailored recommendations, faster customer support and improved product availability.

“Companies that utilize AI will be able to streamline their operations, automate most of their tasks, and make data-driven decisions that lead to higher customer satisfaction and overall improved efficiency. For example, picture walking into a store and picking up the item you want to purchase and then walking back out without paying or using your phone to pay. Amazon has already implemented this technology and AI is making it more mainstream for smaller companies to utilize.”

Leveling the Field

Artificial intelligence also has the potential to be a great equalizer in the marketplace, giving small to medium-sized companies a legitimate fighting chance against behemoth competitors, especially in the retail world.

“AI will present realistic opportunities to level the playing field when it comes to small to medium businesses and larger competitors,” Decker said. “They will be able to utilize AI to enhance customer segmentation and personalize marketing of their business or products. AI also will help with process automation and create a unique customer experience. This will enable them to compete effectively, strengthen their consumer market, and cater to the evolving demands of the consumer.”

Decker said for all of these benefits, entrepreneurs should take steps now to understand how AI works and the applications that can best serve their businesses in the marketplace.

“Entrepreneurs and SMB owners should understand that AI is accessible and can be tailored to their specific needs. There is a range of current applications that can implement automation and tailored needs to businesses of any kind,” he said. “Collaborating with AI service providers and exploring different AI platforms and tools will empower businesses to leverage AI’s potential for growth and success.

“Making sure someone in the organization is staying up to date on AI advancements and new tools will keep them on the cutting edge of the growing technology. AIM Institute is committed to supporting small businesses in Omaha by providing resources, training and mentorship in AI adoption to drive their technological transformation.”

In the banking and financial sectors, AI is providing similar paths to greater efficiency. Per George Wehbe, chief operating officer, banking

with Fiserv, these include robust fraud detection algorithms to protect clients, enhanced marketing intelligence to empower consumers to make informed decisions, services that expand financial inclusion to underserved populations, and radically increased speed in fixing backoffice incidents.

Security at Premium

The reach of the technology is so great, it’s driving in-depth conversations about security like never before, Wehbe said.

“As we’ve seen in the news, it’s important to build enhanced operating protocols and control mechanisms to adhere to ethical considerations, mitigate potential risks to data privacy and eliminate algorithmic biases,” he said. “For AI models to learn, they require a constant flow of potentially sensitive and sometimes highly personal data, including social security numbers, banking details and even biometrics.

“As companies and consumers use more AI in their decision-making, it will become increasingly difficult to understand the AI-developed algorithms and the way data is used. The fintech industry must ensure an ongoing balance between the expanded use of innovative AI and the potential risks to data security.”

Wehbe said to carry this responsibility effectively, companies must align themselves with technology partners who are as concerned about mitigating potential issues as they are.

“Entrepreneurs and small businesses should identify areas where AI can have the most significant impact on business operations or customer experience and consider collaborating with AI providers and their fintech partners to avoid having to build everything in-house,” he said.

“Collaboration and partnerships can help small- to medium-sized businesses safely navigate the complexities and ever-changing AI

landscape to ensure timely and effective utilization.”

It’s difficult if not wholly impossible to fully assess the long-term implications artificial intelligence will have on the business world but given how quickly the technology has already rooted itself, business leaders who try to ignore it do so at their peril.

“I personally believe AI will never replace humans,” Wehbe said. “Nevertheless, to be competitive in today’s workplace and to deliver on the promise of AI requires new training, new skills, and the confidence to embrace a culture of invention and innovation.”

Mental Health Matters

LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS HELP SERVE UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

Editor’s note: This is the third in a series of articles covering mental health in the metro. Our next series will cover affordable housing.

In the next year, Omaha will see at least three major projects coming online to address the mental health of underserved communities: the Child Saving Institute’s (CSI) campus expansion, the new Community Alliance headquarters, and Radius. Meanwhile, other organizations are stepping up to address coverage gaps.

Complex Challenges

Radius CEO and President Nick Juliano is quick to point out that there are “great programs in our community.” The challenge, he said, is that some populations are experiencing complex challenges that current organizations can’t accommodate fully.

For example, Youth Emergency Services (Y.E.S.) Executive Director Kalisha Reed said affordable housing or food insecurity may produce a level of anxiety that an individual may not be equipped to handle.

“Because of that you might not be able to hold down a job, or you may have discord with co-workers, friends and family. That creates a lot of isolation,” Reed said.

That’s why several organizations have begun designing a continuum of services that addresses the “whole person.”

“Not just their mental health or substance use, but how is their housing situation? How is their food situation? How is their financial situation?” said Aileen Brady, executive vice president, and chief operating officer at the Community Alliance.

Here are six organizations working in Omaha to help underserved communities.

1. Radius: 5040 Grand Avenue, Omaha 68104

In July, the Radius campus will open in North Omaha to help youth in the juvenile justice system heal and grow in their community. The program focuses on providing a safe living space, cultivating healthy support systems, and providing specialized education and behavioral health services.

Juliano said before Radius, many youths had to leave the community, and even the state, to receive assistance when there was more than one critical service needed, such as substance abuse and mental health services.

However, he said studies show that youth who remain in their communities during treatment have the most successful outcomes.

Unfortunately, at the beginning of the process, Steve Gordon said community members were weary, believing the facility would be just another jail. Gordon, along with co-collaborator Alan Tipp, helped create the name and branding for Radius.

“It was very important to change that perception,” he said. “It became crystal clear that the name was going to have to tell the story of what’s happening inside the facility.”

‘Radius’ pays homage not only to the physical community the youth are surrounded by but also to the spheres of influence in their lives.

Behavioral health services will be provided by Charles Drew Health Center. The clinic, located in a separate building, will offer more than behavioral health services and will be open to the community.

“That’s really important for prevention,” Juliano said. “We’re hoping that when families or youth start to experience challenges, they can come [to this Charles Drew Health Center] and get help.”

They also hope the clinic’s location will encourage youth to maintain their physical and mental health after leaving the program.

With that end goal in mind, Juliano pointed to the clinic being identified as a health center.

“It doesn’t say ‘mental health center,’” Juliano said. “[You could be there for] a school physical, a sore through, a vaccination, or seeing your therapist.

“It is very important that we are all working to reduce and remove the stigma around getting help.”

2. Encounter Telehealth

Jen Amis, president and CEO of Encounter Telehealth, said the stigma associated with talk therapy has decreased following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We saw a big increase, over 100%, in the demand for talk therapy,” she said. “It helped people see mental health as a part of our physical health, and if you’re having mental health issues, it’s going to impact your physical health.”

Most of Encounter Telehealth’s patients are senior citizens living in a facility. About one-third of them are progressing through dementia, which means an increased level of communication between providers.

An increasing demographic for Encounter is previously incarcerated individuals who are re-entering society after serving time in federal facilities. These individuals may need help addressing PTSD, substance abuse, or depression and anxiety.

Encounter is also seeing more patients under the age of 65, which was not the case when Amis started with the company.

“What we’ve seen in the past eight years is nursing homes becoming more and more like replacements for psychiatric hospitals,” she said.

She said the younger patients are more likely to have severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, that require them to have 24-hour care.

The key to success for all patients is being able to treat the whole patient, and oftentimes that means working with a whole care team of primary care doctors, nursing staff, and other specialists.

3. Community Alliance:

7171 Mercy Road, Omaha 68106

Accessibility was a key factor for Community Alliance’s leadership when the decision was made to build a new headquarters to better meet the needs of the community.

“As an organization, we wanted to bring our programs together,” Brady said. “Oftentimes people that we serve are involved in multiple programs, and for us that collaboration and communication among teams is so important.”

The new headquarters will be located off 72nd street and Mercy Road, where public transportation is frequent thanks to surrounding developments.

The organization, which turned 42 last year, took an additional step in its commitment to the community in 2021 by becoming one of the first

Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBCHC) in Nebraska.

CCBCHC is a commitment to three major directives: expanding timely access, shrinking wait times, and being responsive to community needs.

The leadership team hopes that the new 127,000-square-foot building will allow them to triple their capacity in five years.

Brady said in 2022 the organization served about 5,000: 4,000 on a consistent basis, and 1,000 on shorter-term aid.

At the time of this writing the $60 million project was 95% funded and seeking philanthropic support from the community.

“When we look at the data and what it’s telling us, we know there is a lot of folks out there that are underserved and need mental health services,” she said. “Right now, honestly, the workforce is what’s holding us back.”

4. Youth Emergency Services:

To entice future clinicians and build capacity, Y.E.S. built stipends for practicum students into its $190,000 American Rescue Plan Act grant. “Typically students don’t get paid for their practicum, but we tried to use this as an incentive to draw people into learning about homelessness through the lens of mental health.”

Y.E.S. will also be promoting other incentives for students, such as

covering the fee for their licensure, tests, or practice materials.

“We also know that there is a mental health crisis and the emergence of major mental health disorders typically occurs between the ages of 19 and 21,” Reed said. “So there’s the ability for students to be able to treat the emergence of a major mental health disorder and gain a lot of experience.”

The majority of the grant will enable Y.E.S. to cover startup costs and hire a full-time mental health professional to serve up to 23 youths, ages 12-24, that Y.E.S. helps.

Previously Y.E.S. contracted with Lutheran Family Services to provide a mental health professional for a few days a week.

She’s also hoping the competitive salary and other perks will help attract individuals that have more diverse backgrounds so that “youth can have more access to practitioners who maybe look like them or have similar lived experience.”

5. Therapists of Color Network

While a general mental health care professional shortage persists, there is an even greater shortage of individuals with diverse backgrounds. Take language for example.

The Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska reported in its 2021 Legislative Report that in most mental health professions less than 40% of providers speak a language other than English.

“Efforts are needed to recruit more culturally competent professionals to continue to address language barriers and align closer with cultural backgrounds,” it stated.

Dalia Ruvalcaba, a licensed bilingual mental health therapist who identifies as Latina, was unable to find peers of color to connect with at the beginning of her career. Earlier this year she decided to launch the Therapists of Color Network, now with 26 registered clinicians.

In addition to connecting with peers, Ruvalcaba is hopeful that having diverse backgrounds and cultures in the group will provide a learning environment.

“I’m a Latina therapist, maybe I could connect with an African American therapist that could help me learn more about their community and culture,” she said.

The other motivation was to create an easily accessible directory for minorities and people of color who were looking for a therapist. She hopes that if underserved communities see clinicians that look like them they might be more encouraged to seek help.

“It’s easier to interact with someone if they have a sense of where you’re coming from and why you have the perspectives, beliefs, and values that you do,” she said.

6. Child Saving Institute: 4545 Dodge St., Omaha 68132

Until more diverse mental health professionals can join the workforce, CSI is utilizing technology to fill the gaps.

Lora Sladovik, director of mental health services at CSI, said in addition to bilingual therapists and a bilingual office manager, the organization also utilizes a program called Martti by Uphealth.

“It helps us access over 250 languages,” she said. “If someone calls us we’re not worried about what language they speak. We know we’re going to be able to communicate with them.”

While CSI has 15 programs ranging from adoption to family empowerment, its mental health division has been expanding rapidly.

“We are busting at the seams right now and our therapists are all over the building because we don’t have enough space,” Sladovik said.

Presently, the agency has a waitlist of 150 children who are waiting to receive therapy services or medication management.

When the $46 million expansion is completed, the hope is to double the number of clinicians CSI employs from eight to 16.

With a general caseload of about 28-30 children per clinician, the increase would allow CSI to help a minimum of 480 children with a variety of services such as outpatient therapy, parent-child interaction therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy.

For reference, last year Sladovnik said they were able to help just over 400 children.

“We’ve been here for 130 years, and this will be the biggest we’ve ever been,” she said.

CHILD SAVING INSTITUTE MAIN ENTRY (RENDERING COURTESY OF TACKARCHITECTS)

INTERESTED IN HELPING THESE ORGANIZATIONS?

We asked organization leaders how individuals could get involved. Here’s what they said:

Radius:

As a brand-new organization, Radius is mainly seeking philanthropic support as it begins to build its legacy.

“We have funding for our programs, but like other nonprofits, we have a gap each year,” Nick Juliano, president and CEO, said. “We need to rely on our community for additional support financially to make sure we can provide the services.”

Donations can be made at radiusomaha.org/donate.

Community Alliance:

First, consider donating to the capital campaign at community-alliance.org/flourish/.

“Every dollar will make a difference,” Aileen Brady, executive vice president, and chief operating officer, said. “Every dollar will build us to our final goal … to be able to be more responsive to community needs.”

Community Alliance also needs in-kind gifts for various programs, including homeless services and housing. Volunteer opportunities are also available. Interested parties can email getinvolved@commall.org, or call 402-341-5128.

Youth Emergency Services:

Aside from cash donations that can be made through its website, Y.E.S. is always in need of frozen and prepared meals to feed youth that are experiencing homelessness, or near homelessness.

“If you want to donate a meal, we have a full calendar. We’re also always looking for clothing for you,” said Kalisha Reed, executive director.

Y.E.S. also has an Amazon wishlist with dozens of items, such as towels, underwear, and hygiene products.

Child Saving Institute:

First, consider donating to the capital campaign at childsaving.org/newsevents/campaignforhope.

Aside from the capital campaign, CSI is also a part of the TAGG network, so individuals can donate directly to CSI while shopping at participating vendors. A wishlist is also available online at childsaving.org/help/donate.

LOWERING BARRIERS TO CARE

TODAY’S DENTAL OFFERS AFFORDABLE AND QUALITY SERVICES TO METRO

Dr. Brent Rising has found that doing things “differently” often makes the biggest impact. This is true for his practice, Today’s Dental, where he places emphasis on lowering barriers to care and offering same-day dentistry whenever possible.

Originally founded by Dr. Dirk Newington in 1981 and purchased by Rising in 2012, the practice uses specialized equipment, such as 3D X-rays, digital scanners, lasers, sedation, Invisalign, implants, dentures and more. Milling same-day crowns with ceramic milling units is also provided to patients in need.

Cultivating a culture of giving back is important to Rising and the team, which is why they have implemented a company mission of 28 by 28, in which the practice is going to give back 28,000 smiles by 2028 free of charge to the underserved and underprivileged. They have already reached over 14,000 individuals served.

“In addition to that, we do care calls on almost every patient the day after an involved procedure to check in on them,” Rising said. “We have also created the Text-ADentist system where patients have evening and weekend emergency access to our doctors.”

EO NEBRASKA: GREG CRABTREE

EO Nebraska is excited to welcome back Greg Crabtree, author of “Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits and Simple Numbers 2.0: Rules for Smart Scaling.” Greg Crabtree will share with entrepreneurs how to view their business as the best investment vehicle to build wealth utilizing the Simple Numbers methodology. Understanding how profitability is adequately set through key metrics such as labor efficiency, contribution margin, and return on invested capital, you can create actionable plans to not only manage by but lower the capital requirements of the business. Ultimately, these proven techniques will allow business owners to grow using their own profit and still have money left to distribute.

The practice also offers online scheduling in real time right from its website and provides insurance benefits verification to decrease the insurance hassle and maximize insurance coverage.

Through being an EO member for several years, Rising said he has benefited as a business owner in many ways.

“I love having our monthly forum meetings and our annual retreats,” Rising said. “We did a forum retreat to Colombia, South America—unforgettable. With EO, I get a perspective on ideas and issues that are in my industry from someone outside of it. That has really opened my eyes to thinking outside the box.”

As for future endeavors, Rising said he looks forward to continuing to offer the best care possible.

“I love refining and improving the patient experience,” Rising said. “We are always striving to improve processes, implement better technology and train on the most up-to-date methods.”

WHAT ELSE IS possible?

Welcome, 2023! I love the New Year. New beginnings, new adventures, new possibilities, new choices. A blank canvas for us to perhaps choose something different and create another masterpiece along the journey of our lives.

As I look back over the past 30-plus years I’ve been in the publishing/media business, I realize where I am today is largely because of the choices I have made. Some of them created more ease and more joy in my life and business, and some of them did not.

We are all a work in progress and constantly evolving. There are hundreds, thousands—make that millions—of choices we can make at any given time.

We all are making choices. Every moment in every day there are choices to make. We are choosing what we wear, what we eat, what we do, who we do it with, where we work, how we nurture our bodies or how we don’t. We choose happiness and joy and we also choose sadness and struggle.

What I love about CHOICE is that you always have a CHOICE. If you choose something and it doesn’t work out or you change your mind, you can choose again. When I hear myself saying, “I have no choice,” that is a choice.

Gary Douglas, founder of Access Consciousness, encourages us to choose in 10-second increments. There is no right or wrong choice, good or bad choice. There is just CHOICE.

Ask yourself, “If I choose (fill in the blank), what will my life be like in a year, five years, ten years? (Or perhaps, in keeping with the above admonition, in the next 10 seconds?) Will this choice create more in my life or less?”

Only you can answer that question. My life continues to change by asking such questions. What are you choosing in 2023? And remember: If it isn’t working out or feeling light—choose again!

What else is possible (in the next 10 seconds, 10 minutes, months, years?) That begins with your next CHOICE!

What else is possible? ~ ANDEE

The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal:

1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address.

Please include your billing address and the desired duration you’d like your notice to run (trade names run for only one week). As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error.

All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information

2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card.

3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday.

4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts.

5. Invoices must be paid prior to publication.
