XAVIER JACKSON BUILDS COMMUNITY WITH LOCAL ART PLUG

Xavier Jackson wants to make art accessible to everyone in Omaha—especially as a career option.

While the term brain drain often refers to young professionals in the startup space, the same can be said for local artists. Jackson is combating that with Local Art Plug, a local space for artists to grow, while connecting them with art lovers.

An outlet for artists to display their works and a space for art lovers to discover pieces in multiple mediums, Local Art Plug is proving itself as a much-needed platform.

The creative behind the concept, 29-year-old Jackson, is turning heads, not just from local artists, but investors too. On July 8th, Jackson took home the grand prize for the Midlands African Chamber’s Pitch Black competition.

Building a Foundation

Immersed in the arts at a young age growing up in South Omaha, Jackson attended Omaha South High School, a visual and performing arts magnet school, which provided a nurturing environment for artistic growth. During those years, Jackson’s creative outlet was not bound by just one medium.

“I was really big into the hip-hop culture. So graffiti, dancing,

making music, all that stuff was what we would do in our free time when we didn’t have sports or anything else going on,” Jackson said.

His high school experience amplified his love for the arts, where it was the norm to see students walking around with sketchbooks. He took creative classes to hone his skills. He was even in a band.

Once he began attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Jackson expanded his understanding of art, beyond the purview of high school.

“I started going to museums more and just really appreciating the art and hanging out there and just being one with the art,” Jackson said.

Majoring in broadcasting and advertising and minoring in English, he discovered a new passion.

“I wanted to create a commercial that aired during the Super Bowl but then I also really fell in love with creative writing,” he said. “And that’s where the original idea for Local Art Plug — back then it was called Showcase — came about.”

The idea was to create a magazine for artists to connect and give exposure to high school-age artists. He shelved the idea when

he couldn’t get the magazine off the ground, only to come back to it after graduating college. When he couldn’t find a job in his field of study, a friend introduced him to a business accelerator.

“In [the accelerator] I took the idea from being a magazine to being, the end goal, a location-based app where you can find artists or art shows anywhere in the world,” he said.

Plugging In

Jackson said building an art career can be oftentimes isolating, and with a lack of support, he noticed his peers leaving Omaha altogether when a sustainable career was not possible.

“As a young artist just starting out, it can be kind of a daunting task to get your art out there to be able to grow your career in Omaha, because there’s a lack of opportunities, especially for people to enter in at an entry-level,” he said.

Local Art Plug, officially launched in 2017, offers a space for artists to navigate the community and build confidence, no matter what skill level they’re at. Currently featuring 30 artists, localartplug.com is free for artists to share their pieces online. Those interested in purchasing art can purchase the pieces through the website, either by a one-time payment or through a payment plan. Businesses, nonprofits and individuals can also take advantage of the subscription model where art is rotated every three months.

“There are additional tax savings for business owners. So it’s really beneficial for them to not only highlight the mission, keep their walls beautiful, energize their workforce, but also give back to the community,” Jackson said.

Jackson’s business model goes beyond simply the sale of art. Located in the Flatiron Building downtown, Local Art Plug’s historic space is a means to create warm connections.

“We really just want to be that rose in the concrete to give people in that area not only something to do but something to look forward to and something they can build upon,” he said.

Artists can join in on informal events such as Creatives & Coffee, mini markets, and have art shows at an affordable rate.

And his advice to aspiring artists? Put yourself other there as much as possible.

“Always keep challenging yourself to do bigger and better things,” he said. “Maybe start off with a vendor table and work your way up to an art show. Maybe you host your own art show and curate art, but ultimately we want to help artists build that confidence in their work to be able to go out there and sell to the world.” CONTINUED

Coming off his win at Pitch Black, Jackson is looking forward to using the knowledge gained through the accelerator program and maximizing his winnings by identifying additional funding opportunities to invest in art technology and start a nonprofit division.

For now, the validation from the experience is what Jackson is enjoying the most.

“We knew it was a problem and it’s a solvable problem, but it’s a problem that people see value in, so that’s very affirming as well and we’re just excited to kind of take things to the next level,” he

said. “I want to thank everybody that has helped us get to this point because it does take a village sometimes to be able to get something up off the ground.”

When it comes to his own creativity, Jackson enjoys writing science fiction and can be found exploring nature, most notably with his dog Bruce Leroy.

“I think a lot of my creativity now is just focused on creative ways to reach the public, creative events that we could possibly do that might benefit people or get more exposure, and then just creative ways to grow the business,” he said.

2023 Pitch Black Competition

FINALISTS SHOW PROOF OF CONCEPT WITH ACCELERATOR PROGRAM

It came down to five finalists, and on July 8th, entrepreneurs competed for the grand prize of $15,000 at the Pitch Black Competition Finale at the Creighton University Harper Center.

The Midlands African Chamber (MAC) event, in its third year, gives a platform for Black and minority individuals to not only showcase their business ideas but also provide the entrepreneurs an opportunity for growth in its accelerator program.

The event featured a business expo and three speakers: Hogoe Kpessou, Dr. Derreck Kayongo, and Ishmael Samuel.

A judging panel of industry experts listened to pitches from the business owners with benchmarks of innovation, market viability, social impact and scalability in mind.

Securing first place in the competition was Local Art Plug.

Founder Xavier Jackson took home both the Pitch Black

Champion 2023 award and “Investors Pick,” for a total of $15,000. Second place went to Cherish Perkins LLC, third place was Serenity Home Solutions, LLC, fourth place was Island Chill 402, and fifth place went to Greenlexi, LLC.

“The Pitch Black 2023 event was a catalyst for opportunity igniting talent,” said Karine Sokpoh, CEO of the Midlands African Chamber. “Talent knows no boundaries, race or borders. The Midlands African Chamber embraces the diversity of experiences, perspectives, and skills that BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and immigrant entrepreneurs bring to the table. By doing so, we not only empower them but also cultivate a vibrant ecosystem where innovation can thrive.”

Sokpoh noted that the accelerator allows the cohort to engage with the community for mentoring and funding opportunities.

“The MAC accelerator is a great example of Ubuntu i.e., the power of humanity, in action,” she said.

MBJ touched base with each finalist to learn more about their companies.

Local Art Plug – 1st Place

Conceptualized by Xavier Jackson, Local Art Plug connects local art lovers, businesses and nonprofits in the community through opportunities to engage and purchase art from local artists. With its history going back to 2017, its mission is to create stronger art communities that are accessible.

In addition to winning funding, Jackson received marketing, accounting and legal assistance, along with a scholarship from Metropolitan Community College, coaching services and coworking space. Above all, he said the accelerator program proved to be valuable to the whole cohort.

“[The accelerator] in itself made me feel like I already won the competition regardless of what the results would have been because it just helped us,” Jackson said. “A lot of us got along a lot further than we would have had if we had been stuck to our own devices and tried to figure things out.”

Read this week’s cover story for a more in-depth feature on Jackson and Local Art Plug.

Cherish Perkins LLC – 2nd Place

Founding Cherish Perkins LLC in June 2022, 22-year-old Cherish Perkins set out to create a custom apparel business for those who didn’t feel represented in the current fashion industry. Using the tagline “Embrace Every Opportunity While Cherishing Your Inner Self,” Perkins’ website displays her works from sketch to reality.

“I started an apparel business because I remember growing up not seeing many African American fashion designers like myself or felt like I had to conform to societal norms because my style was different,” Perkins said.

She designs apparel for women, men and kids and offers styling and alteration services. She said she creates garments with self-confidence and personal expression in mind. Something she’s dreamed of ever since she was 5.

“I used to spend my early childhood sitting at the kitchen table sketching people in fashionable outfits and watching the worldfamous fashion competition show, ‘Project Runway,’” she said.

She aspires to expand the business globally and release new collections each season.

“I am hoping to make an impact on today’s youth and young girls,” Perkins said. “I want to use my experience as an example to show them that you are never too young to chase after your dreams and your dreams are never too big.”

Serenity Home Solutions, LLC – 3rd Place

After seeing her brother struggle with PTSD, Vera Mahadi wanted to create a comprehensive and holistic solution for treatment. Serenity Home Solutions offers residential and transitional homes for those experiencing mental illness, behavioral and substance abuse disorders.

“[My brother’s] condition continues to deteriorate, and that’s what inspired us to create Serenity Home Solutions, so no other family will have to experience what my brother is going through,” Mahadi said. “In Omaha in the last 12 months 20.3% of adults were diagnosed with a mental illness and 81% of them have not got any treatment.”

The company is focusing on individualized care plans, serving individuals that don’t meet the income requirements to be treated at many nonprofit organizations. Mahadi, who founded the company with Hakim Lado, said case management focuses on following up on individuals and includes wellness and nutrition plans.

“We strive to become advocates and caretakers for the

We want to work with the community to break the stigma because everyone deserves help and hope.”

Island Chill 402 – 4th Place

Following the birth of her son, Shawnie Hernandez was not ready to return to work. She took a leap of faith and instead flexed her entrepreneurial muscles with the start of Island Chill 402. A beverage truck specializing in frozen lemonade, slushies and fruit boba tea, the truck can be hired for corporate events and parties alike. Additionally, Island Chill 402 can be found

at upcoming community events such as Afro Fest Omaha and HutchFest.

Looking to the future, Hernandez has ambitions to expand the impact she has on the community.

“I would like to open a family-friendly coffee shop in North Omaha,” she said. “I hope to encourage anyone interested in starting their own business.”

Greenlexi, LLC – 5th Place

Artez and Dorinda Young wanted to provide a platform for minority-owned businesses to share their services in one convenient place. They created Greenlexi, LLC in 2020, a webbased directory to connect “conscious consumers with minorityowned businesses that are disadvantaged,” Artez Young said.

The directory, greenlexi.com, now has over 400 businesses

across the U.S. in numerous categories from lawyers to home improvement. Young said they are currently expanding content on the website to provide resources to consumers.

“For instance, if someone’s looking to buy a house, there’s a lot of minority people that just don’t understand that process,” he said. “We’re looking to create and/or provide content that’s going to educate them.”

Greenlexi is also aiming to provide resources for business owners or those looking to start a business.

“I have 20 years of experience in the financial realm, a lot of it in retail banking,” Young said. “In my current position, I work for the state of Nebraska, and I come in contact with a lot of the types of businesses that I’m talking about so I’m actually working with locals, and I see the struggles.”

In the coming months, Young said the team will be making improvements to the website with the knowledge gained through the Pitch Black accelerator program.

Connections

MIDLANDS AFRICAN CHAMBER GROWS COMMUNITY REACH

Karine Sokpoh didn’t launch Midlands African Chamber on a whim. An immigrant from Togo who’s lived in Nebraska for 22 years, she knew firsthand the need for people like herself to have access to a group that understood the challenges of assimilating to a new country and culture.

“I’m a lawyer by trade and owner of 402 Legal, which is my law firm which I started in 2011,” she said. “After I started the firm, I needed a group that would support me and help me network so I could grow my firm.

“I turned to the Midlands Bar Association and they were really helpful and I was able to gain really good mentors through that. And that got me to thinking, I’m a lawyer so I have access to that network. What about workers that are not lawyers who are starting a business, what kind of network do they have?”

Right Place, Right Time

Along the way, Sokpoh became involved with the Nebraska Hispanic Chamber and was impressed by the good it was doing in the community. She used that as a blueprint to create her organization, targeting African-born immigrants and African Americans.

She was so sure of the need for the organization, even a global pandemic didn’t slow her down.

“When I started looking into it, I found out that there was no Black chamber, period, in Nebraska,” she said. “So, during the pandemic, we decided to just go ahead and do it and we created the Midlands African Chamber, which focuses on helping Africans whether they were born stateside or African-born or island-born.”

In the three years since, membership in the group has grown briskly. From its original seven members, the stand-alone Midlands African Chamber now lists more than 200 in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas City, and Minnesota. Sokpoh said growing membership, which is open to all regardless of race or ethnicity, has been a grassroots effort.

“Most of our growth has been organic, word of mouth and also through events that we put together,” Sokpoh said. “One of the big events that we do is the Pitch Black conference and a pitch competition. We also have a social media marketing campaign that we did around that and we recruit through our Roll Call, which is a Chamber meet and greet.”

Creating Connections

The organization’s growth hasn’t gone unnoticed by other business-oriented groups, which have begun to reach out to Midlands African Chamber as a resource for suggestions on improving their own programming to suit Black and African entrepreneurs.

“I will tell you the response to the creation of MAC has been overwhelmingly positive from all parts of the business ecosystem,” she said. “When it comes to bigger organizations like the Sarpy County Chamber, the Omaha Chamber, we’ve got good working relationships with both of those chambers.”

Programming has increased along with the group’s headcount. Two years ago, Sokpoh launched the MAC Foundation as the fundraising arm of the Chamber and for doing more programming for youth. Through the foundation, teens are provided mentorship, headshots and mock interviews to prepare them for the business world. The youth program also includes Suit Up, which provides youth with business attire, and Rising CEOs, a 10-week program that educates youth on personal and business finance. And, Sokpoh said, there’s more on the horizon.

“We have the MAC Foundation scholarships, and those are for students of color going into finance, law, STEM,” Sokpoh said. “Those are scholarships that we are awarding for the first time at our annual Gratitude Gala in November.”

Individuals interested in supporting the work of the MAC Foundation can learn more by visiting FundMac.org.

Volunteering linked to improved wellbeing

Doing good does more than ease the need in our community. SHARE Omaha and The Wellbeing Partners are seeking to increase awareness of mental health and the wellbeing benefits of volunteerism. In highlighting the positive outcomes of giving time to local nonprofits, the organizations hope to welcome new volunteers and hear stories of how doing good has benefited volunteers personally.

CEO of The Wellbeing Partners Aja Anderson said, “We are all seeking tools to reduce stress and improve our health. Volunteering can be a great way to get physical benefits from the serotonin, endorphins and dopamine you release when helping others, while also making a difference for a cause that matters to you.”

Anderson went on to share that according to research published May 30 in “JAMA Network Open,” youth who volunteer their time are approximately 25% less likely to have anxiety than those who do not. Teresa Mardesen, executive director of SHARE Omaha, pointed to over 100 opportunities for kids aged 5-17 years old currently available at SHAREomaha.org as ways for young people to engage in volunteerism in addition to adults.

“We know during the pandemic many volunteers were not able to provide as much help in person and are looking to return now and volunteer in new ways. SHARE Omaha represents over 700 nonprofits who need your support, not only with dollars and resources, but your time as well,” expressed Mardesen.

Research shows that volunteers will receive as much as they give. One study from Unity Health Group reported that over 75% of people who volunteered in the past 12 months said they felt healthier. A quarter of respondents stated giving their time helped them manage a chronic illness and a vast majority, 94%, said their mood improved.

The Wellbeing Partners encourages volunteers to submit their story of how service benefits their mental health at whatmakesus.com. WhatMakesUs is a collection of testimonials from community members living with mental health conditions and their allies, with over 190 stories to date.

Businesses, families, individuals and organizations across the metro can access the SHARE Omaha and SHARE Iowa platforms any day of the year to find much-needed volunteer opportunities, give financial help, discover upcoming events or buy wish list items for 700+ nonprofit organizations. Additional resources about wellbeing and volunteerism can be found at SHAREomaha.org/wellbeing.

About SHARE Omaha: SHARE Omaha was created by local philanthropists to help area nonprofits primarily in Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy, Saunders or Washington counties fulfill their missions by recruiting donors to share money, material goods and time. Over 700 metro nonprofits are registered on the SHARE Omaha platform. BUILT TO LAST KINGERY CONSTRUCTION CO. LEAVES IMPRESSION WITH QUALITY BUILDS

Family and locally-owned for nearly a century, Kingery Construction Co. has always put customer satisfaction first, according to President Rod Berens, who said matching up the company’s skillset with projects helps to ensure this goal is always met.

Over time, the company has built many iconic buildings throughout Lincoln, including the Lied Center for Performing Arts, University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s George W. Beadle Center and the West Gate Bank Center. Additionally, Kingery recently completed several building projects over the course of an eight-year span at Northeast Community College in Norfolk.

“Most people only build one big building in their lifetime, and we build them every day,” Berens said. “We want our customers to have a quality build that they’ll be happy with.”

At the moment, challenges impacting the industry have required more management time, higher costs and longer project timelines. Berens said he looks forward to inflation returning to normal so the team can focus on building without added obstacles.

As an EO Nebraska member for three years, Berens said he has enjoyed connecting with like-minded

EO NEBRASKA: DHIREN HARCHANGIANI

EO Nebraska is excited to have Dhiren Harchangiani come to Omaha in August to discuss “Mastering Your Inner Game.” Do you ever ask yourself … Is this the best use of my time? Do you find yourself stretched too thin? Do you try and do it all? Are there times when you don’t feel alive and desirable? Do you feel like you’re constantly in motion, but you’re not getting anywhere? Some days it’s really tempting to throw in the towel and make an excuse. Every excuse is a scratch on the glass of how we see ourselves, and with enough scratches, we start losing sight of what’s important, we start losing sight of who we want to be.

Like many people, Dhiren realized he approached his life in a way that made the

businesspeople at events such as EO XCentric.

“The presentations are always outstanding, extremely organized and a lot of fun for members,” Berens said. “The speakers are very successful and very relatable, too. They offer takeaway information that we use in our business.”

Hearing from others about their accomplishments, involvements, successes and struggles during monthly forum meetings has also been extremely insightful for Berens.

In the future, Berens and his wife plan to take advantage of additional trips and opportunities offered through EO.

“We look forward to exploring how other cultures and businesses work in other areas,” Berens said. “It’s exciting to hear about how others have gotten to where they are today.”

Driving Growth and Prosperity

A DYNAMIC PARTNERSHIP IN RELOCATION CAMPAIGN

In today’s fiercely competitive business landscape, cities and regions must continuously innovate and attract new residents and businesses to thrive. In this pursuit, the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce and the Council Bluffs Convention & Visitor Bureau (CVB) play crucial roles as community catalysts. However, the true magic happens when these two entities join forces to launch a relocation campaign. By blending economic expertise with the charm of tourism, this partnership can create a compelling narrative that beckons individuals and companies to call the region home.

Understanding the CB Chamber and CB CVB

Before delving into their collaboration, it is essential to grasp the distinct roles of the CB Chamber and the CB CVB.

The CB Chamber: A Chamber of Commerce represents and advocates for the interests of local businesses, ranging from small enterprises to large corporations. It fosters economic growth, provides networking opportunities, and advocates for policies that create a conducive business environment.

The CB CVB: A CVB is primarily responsible for promoting tourism in a region. By showcasing the area’s attractions, cultural heritage, and recreational opportunities, the CVB attracts visitors who contribute to the local economy through spending on accommodation, dining, entertainment, and more.

The Synergy of the Partnership

When these two entities combine forces, their complementary expertise gives rise to a relocation campaign with unparalleled impact.

Here’s how their partnership thrives: market intelligence and data sharing. The CB Chamber and CB CVB gather extensive data on local economic trends and tourism patterns. By pooling their insights, they can identify key selling points and align their strategies to attract businesses and individuals that align with the region’s unique strengths.

Crafting a cohesive story: Successful relocation campaigns hinge on weaving a compelling narrative. The CB Chamber’s economic expertise helps identify industry-specific advantages, while the CB CVB’s knowledge of local culture, history, and scenic beauty lends a human touch. Together, they create a story that appeals to both businesses seeking a prosperous

Leveraging branding and marketing: The CB Chamber and CB CVB collaborate on branding strategies that highlight Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie UNbelievable identity. This cohesive branding amplifies the campaign’s message and fosters a sense of unity among local stakeholders.

Showcasing the livability factor: Prospective residents are not merely interested in economic opportunities but also the quality of life a region offers. The CB CVB’s expertise in showcasing recreational activities, events, and community engagement opportunities complements the CB Chamber’s focus on business incentives. They have also started a blog of stories from residents that have relocated to the area, to help give others an idea of what it is like to live in our area.

After acquiring the Little King franchise operation in 2021, Lockwood Development is announcing that the firm’s first Omaha Little King store opened to the public on November 1, with a Grand Opening featuring the Creighton Volleyball team scheduled for Saturday, November 5. The store, located at 8602 West Dodge Road, represents a step forward for both the brand and its footprint in the Omaha area. “Our new store is very close to where the very first Little King store was located when it opened in 1969,” said Chip James, president and CEO of Lockwood Development. “That’s no coincidence. We’re truly inspired by the roots of this historic franchise, and we look forward to carrying that spirit forward to loyal Little King customers, as well as a new generation of Omaha residents.” The 1500-square-foot store combines modern design and an inviting dining area with classic Little King branding and artwork. Customers can expect to order from Little King’s beloved menu featuring subs and sandwiches made with bread baked in store and fresh-sliced meat, as well as soups and desserts, while taking advantage of a variety of conveniences, including a drive-thru. THE DOCTOR IS IN...THE CEO OFFICE: HILLCREST NAMES CMO

DR. ANTHONY HATCHER NEW CEO

Hillcrest Health Services has always taken a progressive and innovative approach to health care. In 2017, Hillcrest hired Dr. Anthony Hatcher as a fulltime chief medical officer to focus on quality care improvement, clinical systems development and new payor-model preparation. Little did Hillcrest know that a pandemic would soon impact health care delivery; fortunately, having a front-line medical expert to lead the organization through COVID-19 proved to be the wisest decision the regional health care provider could have made.

Hillcrest recently announced Dr. Hatcher as chief executive officer. Anthony Hatcher, DO, is a board-certified family physician who received a Bachelor of Science from Truman State University, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and a master’s degree in executive leadership from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr. Hatcher completed his family medicine residency at Creighton University and served in the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon stationed at Offutt AFB. Prior to joining Hillcrest in 2017, Dr. Hatcher spent more than 20 years working for Alegent/CHI Health as a practicing clinical physician. He also served on the Alegent Health Board of Directors and as the chief administrative officer of Alegent Health Clinic.

“We are extremely pleased to announce this promotion,” said Jim Janicki, Hillcrest’s chief administrative officer. “Dr. Hatcher is highly respected in the local medical community and among post-acute care providers, and our team members have been looking to him for his leadership and support for the past six years. This just feels right. We’re excited for Hillcrest’s continued growth and innovation with Tony at the helm.”

In addition to CEO, Dr. Hatcher will continue to serve as the health system’s CMO, providing oversight on clinical operations, physician and hospital partnerships, quality assurance initiatives and systemwide clinical education.
