Gold Standard DR. JEFFREY P. GOLD LEADS EVOLUTION OF NU SYSTEM

Since his term as the University of Nebraska (NU) system President began last month, Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold has stepped into a demanding role that includes leading the four-campus system of University of Nebraska Omaha, University of NebraskaLincoln, University of Nebraska Kearney and University of Nebraska Medical Center. Additionally, he serves as chief spokesperson and chief executive officer for NU. Nevertheless, he determinedly makes time to regularly meet with some of the nearly 50,000 students enrolled statewide.

“I probably meet with four or five students a week, on average,” he said. “I love doing it … I can certainly give them advice on how to better prepare and things that they might want to do, and reinforce their commitment to doing it.”

Gold became the ninth president of the University of Nebraska system on July 1, following a national search by the Board of Regents. In his most recent roles as chancellor of UNMC, a position he had held since 2014, and executive vice president and provost of NU system since 2021 (he also served as chancellor of UNO from May 2017 to June 2021), he exercised a similar man-of-the-people approach.

It seems to stem from his own experiences. Gold was a first-generation student at Cornell University’s engineering school, where he graduated with a

bachelor’s degree in theoretical and applied mechanics.

His medical training was from the Weill Cornell College of Medicine followed by a general surgery residency at The New York–Presbyterian Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, a cardiothoracic surgical fellowship training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and additional training in pediatric cardiac surgery at the Boston Children’s Hospital.

Years of delivering clinical care was an important factor in cultivating a culture of caring for the NU system, Gold said.

“The ability to care for patients and families is a very special privilege. Obviously, I spent decades of my life preparing for that. I’ve learned a lot of lessons from it that are useful to my leadership role, not the least of which is if you care for your patients like you would care for your family, you make very few judgmental mistakes,” he said.

“If we care for our students, if [we] care for our staff like we would care for family members — I’m very fond of saying — we’re going to make very few mistakes, and we’re going to give them the best opportunities we can for them to be successful. [That’s] what we all want.”

DR. JEFFREY P. GOLD, PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA SYSTEM.

I want to be sure that every single one of our graduates, no matter when they graduated, are proud of this university, and that the value of that degree as perceived by employers, families, and alumni is as high as possible.
- DR. JEFFREY P. GOLD, PRESIDENT, NEBRASKA UNIVERSITY

The power of education

Gold intensely believes in the power of higher education to elevate the lives of individuals and consequently the community, he said. Nevertheless, a significant challenge for the NU system long-term is public perception of the value of higher education.

“When I was younger, when my kids went to college, there was no question in people’s mind that higher education provided a lifestyle — I don’t just mean an income, but a quality of life — that was superior. The statistics do demonstrate that a good college education doesn’t teach you what to think, it teaches you how to think and to be a critical thinker,” he said. “We need an educated citizenry that understands how to read a newspaper or watch the news and come up with educated and thoughtful analysis on their own, and not be spoon-fed something through 100 characters or 30 seconds.

“We also know that college graduates earn significantly more, they live longer, they have higher quality of life, the utilization of health care is less. And every metric of fulfillment is superior to those that have a college education. Unfortunately, there are people who are questioning that value proposition.”

That can affect not only enrollment but also contribute to higher numbers of students who delay graduation or never complete their degree program, Gold said. At the same time, he sees “a great deal of opportunity.”

“We need to breathe that enthusiasm and that energy about the process … make sure that the young women and young men, particularly in the state of Nebraska, have the very best experience they can have in the classroom and outside of the classroom,” he said.

That influences the evolution of NU from the macro level, such as campus improvements, to the individual level, like providing online class options for students who are best served by a blended education.

“We have to continue to evolve to meet the needs of the students,” he said. “We’ll try to be preemptive, to be sure that education is not only available but truly excellent.

“You know, I get asked questions all the time about the cost of education. And while I’m very focused to keep it affordable — believe me: as a firstgeneration student, affordability was everything — we have to make it a high-value proposition. In other words, we have to optimize the outcome, while reducing the cost of time, cost of talent, cost of resources, et cetera. And that’s a very delicate balance. I view the diplomas that we issue as a stock certificate. And what I mean by that is that the value of that equity share in the university ebbs and flows with the reputation and the excellence of the university. And I want to be sure that every single one of our graduates, no matter when they graduated, are proud of this university, and that the value of that degree as perceived by employers, families, and alumni is as high as possible.”

Building impact

Gold said the NU system has an important, multifaceted economic impact in the state and locally. The NU system employs 16,000 faculty and staff on its campuses, making it one of the state’s largest employers, and operates on a $3 billion annual budget that includes a flagship Big Ten institution, a widely recognized academic health sciences center, Division I athletics programs, and notable institutes focused on water and agriculture, national security and defense, infectious disease and early childhood education.

“One of the biggest things the university does as a public university system is educate the future workforce and citizenry of the state,” he added.

Gold leads several key economic development boards for the state and the university system, including the Greater Omaha Chamber, University Tech Development Corp, the University Tech Transfer Corp, and UNeTech Corp.

“I’m an incredibly proud Nebraskan by choice. And I’m very, very, very ecstatic to be here, not just to be in this role and to be part of higher education and health care, but more broadly just to be a Nebraskan and to enjoy the most valuable asset that Nebraska has, which is its people. It’s a unique community of people who are caring and hardworking,” he said. “I have now been here approximately 10 and a half years.

“And as a result of that, I know the communities rural and urban, border to border of the state. I’m very familiar with the legislature, obviously, I know the governor extremely well because we worked together [in his role] as a regent, as well as in his role as governor. I know our federal delegation very well. I’ve been highly involved with the philanthropic community.”

Gold said he looks forward to further growth and development for the NU system, which ultimately benefits everyone in the state.

“We are well over a $10 billion economic impact, as assessed through a third-party outside technology, which is a widely established program to measure economic impact,” he said. “So, we return, I think the estimate was, somewhere between $10 and $12 for every dollar that’s received — far, far, far more than state appropriation, far more than tuition … We are a huge economic driver for the state. We hold a ton of real estate; we probably have as many tower cranes in the air systemwide as any other company in the state, if not more. And we are very, very protective about using Nebraska businesses when we need to outsource work: think architecture, engineering, construction, et cetera.

“I really enjoy working with the business community. The partnerships that the university has today, and the many, many more that we’ll build tomorrow with the business community is critically important to our future.”

EDUCATION, METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Today’s college classrooms — be they two-year or four-year — are being enhanced by the input of the business community like never before. Higher education experts in the metro attribute this trend to students’ desire for immediately applicable degrees and Main Street’s need for savvy graduates.

“The Omaha business community plays an important role in how we shape our curriculum,” said Levi Thiele, director of career development with the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO). “We go the extra mile to learn about their needs, so we can equip our learners with the skills and experiences they need in order to fulfill these roles in Omaha and across our state.”

Boardroom meets classroom

Community input on postsecondary educational programs isn’t a new concept, but its scope has traditionally been thought to be limited to two-year and vocational programs. In today’s world, almost every college or university curriculum benefits from input from the local business community. Thiele said at UNO this input takes a variety of forms.

“One of the ways UNO stays connected with the Omaha business

community is the development of micro-credentials through community input,” she said. “We develop these courses based on what we hear from our business community, including grant development, artificial intelligence, financial analysis for non-financial professionals, data science, project management and social media, helping employees develop highly sought-after skills.”

In addition, the university maintains various internship and mentoring programs whereby students are placed in real-world work environments and receive one-on-one coaching from those established within their chosen field of endeavor. Thiele said the benefits of these efforts are far-reaching.

“Local businesses investing in the education process significantly impacts graduate retention in the local job market,” she said. “When businesses engage with educational institutions through internships, mentorship programs, guest lectures and collaborative projects, they create strong ties between students and the local economy.

“Students who intern locally are more likely to stay in the area because they build professional networks, gain real-world experience, and become familiar with employer expectations. These internships often lead to job offers from host companies, making graduates more inclined to remain in the area where they

already feel a sense of community and belonging. Additionally, the continuous interaction with industry professionals and exposure to local lifestyle benefits contribute to graduates’ decisions to stay.”

Helping hand

Christi Glesmann, assistant dean of undergraduate health sciences at College of Saint Mary (CSM), said the school’s myriad partnerships provide current students an array of benefits including mentorship programs, internships and hands-on training opportunities that bridge the gap between theory and real-world application. Some of the most valuable benefits of these corporate partnerships even extend beyond graduation.

“Our Omaha and Nebraska communities are vital in delivering high-quality nursing education at CSM,” she said. “Through strategic partnerships, we can enhance the education and student support we provide to our nursing students, ensuring they are well-prepared for their careers in health care.

– LEVI THIELE, DIRECTOR OF CAREER DEVELOPMENT, UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA

“One of the significant contributions from our partners is the provision of loan forgiveness and/or tuition assistance programs. This financial support makes nursing education more accessible, enabling more aspiring nurses to pursue their passion and join the workforce. By investing in the education of future nurses, businesses help ensure a steady supply of well-educated health care professionals.”

Glesmann reiterated the symbiotic relationship between corporate investment in students and the likelihood those students will remain local at the conclusion of their training.

“The majority of CSM graduates go on to serve in Nebraska and western Iowa communities. This trend is largely attributed to the positive learning experiences our students have at local health care facilities,” she said. “These clinical experiences not only provide essential hands-on training, but also allow students to see themselves as future nurses within these environments. working closely with local businesses and health care providers, we create a seamless transition from education to employment.”

More than meets the eye

Even schools that have long relied on input from the business community are using it to push curriculums into new and exciting directions. Tammy Green, executive director of community and workforce education for Metropolitan Community College (MCC), said the modern two-year college has expanded well beyond welding and plumbing to encompass a range of in-demand careers, informed by the business community looking to hire graduates.

“We have developed a variety of educational programs to support skilled careers emphasizing practical, hands-on training for immediate workforce entry,” she said. “These programs are highly sought after due to their strong job placement rates and the growing demand for skilled technicians in these fields.

“In addition to established programs, we have introduced newer offerings in the field of biotechnology, which is a new program starting soon. These innovative programs address emerging industry needs and provide students with cutting-edge skills and knowledge.”

Long prized for shorter time commitment and lower cost, MCC also offers a number of micro-credential programs, which hasten a student’s entry into the workforce even faster.

“Micro-credential programs allow individuals to gain specialized skills and certifications in a shorter timeframe, which is particularly beneficial for those seeking to upskill or reskill for career advancement,” she said. “These newer programs and micro-credentials are designed to be flexible and accessible, ensuring that our community members can stay competitive in an ever-evolving job market.”

One important advantage to curriculums shaped by the business community is in leveling the playing field for a more diverse group of graduates.

“The business community plays a pivotal role in delivering non-credit microcredentials at Metropolitan Community College and is also essential for credit degree programs as well,” she said. “Their input ensures that the curriculum is relevant and up to date, providing students with skills that are directly applicable in the workforce.

“Corporate partnerships are invaluable in this type of education, as they offer numerous benefits including access to industry expertise, resources and

A direct impact

Another way that business expertise is at work in the college classroom is by institutions of higher learning placing a priority on faculty members’ work experience outside of academia.

Anthony Hendrickson, dean of the Heider College of Business at Creighton University, said professors who boast direct, applicable experience in the business world are prized by his department.

“If you look at our 75 full-time faculty members, they have well over 500 years of aggregate business experience. For us, that’s really important,” said Hendrickson, who worked for 15 years in the private sector before earning his doctorate. “If you have faculty members who have business experience, they’re confident about their knowledge base and they tend to more readily engage with the business community.

“That allows them to be more connected and more in tune with what’s happening today. Not only do people who have that experience bring it into the classroom, because they already know from their own experience what’s

OF SAINT MARY

important and what’s not, but they feel very comfortable continuing to have those relationships with practitioners that are out there today.”

Hendrickson stated that the college maintains connections within the business community not only to create opportunities for students, but also for faculty members to stay engaged and develop the kinds of networks that inform their teaching.

“We have a fantastic chamber of commerce in Omaha. I sit as an ex-officio member of the board allowing me to meet and connect regularly, at least once a month, with businesspeople who I look at as, ultimately, my customers,” he said. “They’re the people hiring not just in Omaha but across the country. They represent a cross-section of the people who are hiring our students and interacting with our alums, talking with them about business.

“Like most business schools, we have boards of alumni that will meet periodically and talk. One of the things that we’ve done recently is we’ve hosted a series of luncheons and dinners through which we have hosted representatives from the Federal Reserve, or talk about a topic such as entrepreneurship, commercial real estate, financial services or manufacturing. Our most recent one was what’s happening in nonprofits. Through this, we’ve learned the nuances of the challenges facing them that may be unique to an industry or maybe they’re seeing it across the country. Those are all tools for staying connected.”

Clean Slate Laundry & Cleaning Services

Growing up in a farming family, Felicia Ellis was always taught the importance of building something from the ground up and leaving a legacy. This led her to have the desire to invest, but she wasn’t sure what to invest in.

When she found a self-service laundromat for sale, Ellis felt it was exactly the type of startup she was looking for.

“It was kind of a just fell into my hands type of thing,” Ellis said.

Since opening Clean Slate Laundry & Cleaning Services, she has transitioned the business to a wash-and-fold service where she handles everything from free pickup and delivery services with monthly plans for individuals and families.

She has since discovered her passion for providing laundry services to people.

She reflected on how about three years ago, she didn’t know what to do with her life.

“I feel like I should probably have some kind of a passion and it was like I never really knew how much I enjoyed doing laundry until I bought the laundromat and started doing wash and fold,” she said.

Ellis described how she loves seeing the transformation process of taking something dirty and making it clean and the satisfaction that comes with it.

A learning process

While she loves owning a business, it has been a learning experience. Before opening Clean Slate, Ellis spent the first 15 years of her career in social work and never studied business in college.

“This has all been a learning process for me,” Ellis said. “But I enjoy it. It’s something that I never thought I would do because I’m more of the person who can be the second in command. I don’t have to be the leader.”

FELICIA ELLIS, OWNER OF CLEAN SLATE LAUNDRY & CLEANING SERVICES.

- FELICIA ELLIS, OWNER OF CLEAN SLATE LAUNDRY & CLEANING SERVICES

One of the biggest challenges has been trying to network and spread the word about Clean Slate. As a small business owner, she is always trying to meet new people and tell them about her services.

“It’s really just kind of getting your name out there and telling everybody that you possibly can without annoying them … giving everybody your business card,” Ellis said.

Not only does she want to continue to gain customers for residential

services, but she is also looking into providing linen services for Airbnb rentals and restaurants.

As she expands, she wants to continue to make sure she is providing quality, consistent service to her clients.

“The biggest things that I have, that I want to provide for customers, are quality and integrity,” Ellis said. “So those are my two biggest factors when it comes into providing services for people.”

Turtle Island Trade Coalition RECONNECTING THE TRIBE TO TRIBE MARKET

According to Ted Hibbeler, a descendant of the Rosebud Sioux, there is a long history of intertribal trading among indigenous people. This practice died off during the colonization of America.

Reviving trade traditions

“Our goal is to reinvigorate that tradition of tribe-to-tribe commerce,” said Hibbeler, the first indigenous director of the Native American Coalition and extension educator at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Turtle Island Trade Coalition (TITC) was created through the partnership of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Native American Coalition. TITC is an organization built to reconnect and support a scattered community.

“Each tribe used to specialize in a certain industry,” Hibbeler said, “Like the Rosebud Sioux were cattle ranchers, mainly of buffalo and bison on the

great plains before European colonizers came and hunted the animals nearly extinct. They would trade the collected furs, meats, and other goods with a tribe who did more agricultural work, or produced something they needed.”

The name for the TITC comes from the Onondaga tribe’s creation story.

“Long story short, it was believed that in the beginning the Earth was just water,” Hibbeler said. “The Skyland’s chief’s wife fell to the earth and was caught by two birds. They knew she couldn’t live in the water, so a muskrat pulled earth from the bottom of the sea and put it on a giant turtle’s back. So they called the earth, North America, Turtle Island. The TITC focuses on tribes in Nebraska and the Dakotas, but hopes to grow until they are helping tribes all across Turtle Island.”

It was a hard fight to get TITC off the ground.

“I had the University of Nebraska’s support, but not their wallets. I had to go out and scrape together the funding myself,” Hibbeler said.

After calling around, he was able to secure the $25 million Regional Food

and Business Center Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The TITC website provides pages for indigenous agricultural businesses to advertise their companies and products. It’s hard to find indigenous-specific businesses in today’s marketplace. It takes the load of creating, advertising and maintaining a website off of the shoulders of company owners; allowing them to focus on production.

Hibbeler enlisted the help of Tim Thielen as the website program coordinator. Together they made a space for indigenous people to sell and buy goods within their community.

Community reach

The organization holds events to teach indigenous people marketing, how to develop their business, find production resources, and where and how to apply for grants. One of the aids they offer is the Nation Nourishment Program. It is a classroom-style program for the Umonhon Nation.

The Nation Nourishment Program is seasonal, teaching how to grow food, how to set up an economic footprint in the business sector, and more. A stipend is offered to individuals dedicated to attending every session. Completion of this course comes with a certificate that can be used in entrepreneurial and employment advancement.

In June 2024, TITC held a workshop called ‘Empowering Indigenous Entrepreneurs.’

“We had a good turnout,” Hibbeler said. “It was nice to get together with

the people. We went over business components with them like marketing and infrastructure.”

Though there aren’t any events on the calendar, TITC plans to continue these communal gatherings to share knowledge and business insight.
