In its nine-year history, Rochester, Minnesota-based Limb Lab has expanded to eight locations nearly tripling its office presence and more than doubling its employee numbers in the past four years alone. Due to the nature of its services, boutique prosthetics and orthotics, Limb Lab has expanded with a blend of “high performance” and “humane” characteristics, according to Chief Growth Officer Brian M. Childs. “If you’re driven but not nice, you won’t last at Limb Lab,” Childs said when asked about its cultural attributes. “And if you’re nice, but not deeply committed to high-quality, accountable work, we’ll wish you the very best and try to support you in your search for work elsewhere.”

When Limb Lab opened in downtown Lincoln next to Canopy Street Market, the 5,000-square-foot space represented the company’s fifth facility and its first outside of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Its 2019 opening also preceded COVID-19 being declared a nationwide emergency by mere months. “Operating any office during a crisis such as COVID-19 is an allhands-on-deck experience,” Childs remarked. “Managing the crisis successfully requires the best of all involved. I think opening in the crucible of COVID-19 sharpened the focus of our team there, which managed very capably through the crisis and continues to manage capably through ongoing concerns related to COVID-19.”

“I loved building just about anything, from furniture to cabinets to houses,” Dean noted. “I went on to complete my undergraduate studies at Doane College, where I volunteered and became a technician for a prosthetic company in Lincoln. I was sold right then and there. I loved fabricating, fitting and meeting everyone who came into the office.”

Few things, according to Dean, make him feel better or prouder than creating devices that affect people “in the direct and personal ways that my work does.”

Mayo Clinic’s abiding commitment to the best interests of its patients, Childs said, is in Limb Lab’s DNA, too. Furthermore, Sampson, who is co-founder, works actively with clinicians across the company on complex questions and care plans from Limb Lab’s Rochester office. “As the company has grown, Brandon’s own practice has shrunk, by design, as he’s become increasingly available to teach and advise Limb Lab’s dispersed clinicians,” Childs said. “Our Rochester office also houses the company’s most robust fabrication facility. So, technicians in Rochester handle components for people across all of our offices.”

Childs attributes its capacity to expand to team members’ excellence at every level. “In C-level management, each of Limb Lab’s owners brings specific experience that helps our growth,” Childs explained. “Marty Frana, our CEO, has nearly two decades of deep experience in the industry. He focuses on reimbursement and revenue-cycle matters, among other aspects of the business. Our Chief Clinical Officer Brandon Sampson has been a prosthetist for over 20 years.” Childs agreed that there is something to be said for its being headquartered in a health care capital. “Mayo Clinic is, of course, headquartered in Rochester, and we are grateful to have a strong working relationship with Mayo and its worldclass clinical staff,” he said. “And, because people come to Mayo Clinic Rochester seeking help with some of the most complex medical issues imaginable, we experience more opportunities to deploy cutting-edge prosthetic and orthotic technologies in Rochester than we do in any other of our offices.”

To further “bridge the miles,” Childs said Limb Lab has made significant investments in technology to help team members connect.

Since Limb Lab’s Lincoln debut, Childs said it has recently opened locations in Des Moines and Iowa City. “We intend to announce another close-by opening soon,” he added. “We’re currently building out the space, and we have several more developments in our pipeline.”

“Along the way, we have met and provided free care to some beautifully compelling people,” he said. Childs referred to a young girl from Jamaica with an above-knee amputation. Prior to Limb Lab fitting her with a donated device, she wasn’t able to walk or play. Now, her active childhood has been restored. Another young woman was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer that led to complete amputation of her leg — to her hip. “We helped by flying staff from other offices in to build a device in the space of two clinical days,” he said, while adding that the foundation has supported “many other people who would have been forced to forego needed care because co-pays were prohibitive.” BJ 110 S. Nebraska’s Lee & Associates office is the 70th for the organization, which was founded in 1979 by the late Bill Lee in Orange County, California. The Nebraska office is among new affiliations opened by Lee & Associates in eight states over the last five years. Dutton said the addition of Boomer Peterson in June, a 10-year veteran of the Lincoln market, has been important to multiple projects. Peterson started his career as an investment adviser. Interest remains high in leases at 200 South 21st St., with 13,330 square feet in what is being dubbed part of The Telegraph District, a mixeduse development. The property consists of restaurants, retail, and office, and also offers some innovative housing opportunities with at least 400 apartment units. The project revitalizes the industrial elements of the former Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph campus on South 21st Street and Capital Parkway. Both Dutton and Goaley said the local retail market is hitting historic lows in terms of vacancies, even lower without the inclusion of malls. In the Omaha area, The L Street Marketplace, northwest of 120th & L streets, has had strong interest in retail space, when it becomes available. Baker Square, a 50-year-old shopping center at 132nd Street & West Center Road, is attracting additional interest in the space available. A recent lease involves Pet Supplies Plus. Notable transactions handled by Dutton over the years include the $31.3 million sale of Montclair on Center (a 250,000-square-foot power center), the Old Market Lofts and American Plaza, among others. There have been 30 lease transactions for Rexius Nutrition and Iron Heaven Gym, plus multiple locations for Ross Dress For Less, and Caliber Collision, among others. While Goaley partnered with Dutton on several transactions, he has also led the successful sale of a 1,000-acre Sarpy County farm, $3.8 million in office buildings for the city of Bellevue, and a $10 million Verizon call center. He also handled a 60,000 Nelnet lease. Both cite the Boardwalk Square project as being both challenging and innovative because it involved a lease-up, sales, subdivision and resale. Tools for the Future Goaley and Dutton expect their successes to be amplified since inking their affiliation with Lee & Associates earlier this year. “The culture is one of working together for the common good and in the opportunities we [now] provide for our brokers and clients,” Dutton said. For Goaley, part of the culture is an emphasis on equality from the newest to the most experienced broker. An internship program is in the process of being developed in Omaha, which should help generate additional broker talent with the same mindset. Dutton and Goaley cite an example of their go-the-extra-mile-to-helpa-client growth mantra. It can be found in the continuing growth of Tim Rexius’ Omaha-based Rexius Nutrition for which the duo has done 30 deals in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, among others. High-end mapping of competitor locations is being generated, as well as a possible location’s proximity to a gym or health club. “Now we have the ability to produce high-quality marketing materials for our clients and in a very short period of time,” Dutton said. “In addition to aerial photos, we are creating 90-second videos of everything that’s happening in downtown Lincoln.”

4. Transition Help Too often, McGregor said a business owner will create an environment where the company’s success is reliant on the business owner’s continued involvement. 3. Knowing Your Value Before heading into a sale, a business owner should have performed a valuation of the business twice according to Ingersoll. When planning begins, and again before the business is offered for sale or transition. “It’s important to know the business’s value when planning begins so owners can focus on those things that actually add or detract from business value,” Ingersoll said. “Aggressive improvement is the goal to maximize the value of the business before it’s listed for sale. The second valuation is to confirm and capture these changes in business performance in fair market value. Sellers use this second valuation to establish an initial asking or transition price in negotiations with a buyer and even to support buyer financing.”Tonegotiate a fair sale price, Sigerson said an owner must know how the market values the business. Again, a qualified CPA can help with this task. “It might just be book value, meaning what is the value of your hard assets cash and accounts receivable minus your accounts payable and other debts,” Sigerson said. “The value may be multiple of your gross sales or net income. It may include blue sky which basically is your reputation and name.”

5. New Identity Like selling a childhood home, getting divorced, or losing a loved one, transitioning a business is a significant life event that produces grief and disrupts habits and rituals. In between the valuations, transition discussions and estate planning, Merle Riepe, president of SOLVE, said it is important to acknowledge and address the emotional and mental impact of exiting. “Some owners transition smoothly, but most experience anxiety, sadness or other negative emotions,” Riepe said. “Many business owners carry a strong identity with their business. For good reason — they poured their life’s work and money into it. There will be a sense of loss when it is over.”

The Right Qualities Being a good business owner boils down to possessing a combination of qualities that ultimately lead to success. Believing in oneself, as well as having the ability to persevere when things are difficult are key qualities, according to Riepe. Drive, or passion, is equally important.

Additionally, Riepe said adaptability is a must, as the first idea or original intent of the business rarely sustains through the lifespan of the business. “If you’re open to multiple options, there are several pathways to success,” Riepe said. “If you’re stubborn about one ‘right’ way, you limit your course to success.” Integrity and ethics should always be top of mind for a good business owner, according to Fredrickson, who said things will get tough now and then and knowing and doing the right thing is critical. Fredrickson also said being flexible is a great trait to possess. “Knowing that you have goals and being fiercely dedicated to them, while knowing you’ll need to do some course correcting is vital,” Fredrickson said. An individual who understands finance and how to use others’ money and leverage money to build a business would make a great business owner. Being creative, responsible and having a positive perspective are also great qualities, Fredrickson said. In McGregor’s experience, a good business owner has the desire to learn and understands their strengths and weaknesses. Another quality is being able to manage multiple personalities and make sure everyone feels heard. “You will create a strong culture if the employees feel like they have an impact,” McGregorSigersonsaid.said having a vision and a strong sense of leadership are a couple of qualities that good business owners boast. “A truly successful business owner moves away from driving all the sales to being one who hires and trains others to be successful,” Sigerson said. “That leverage is the key to growth.”

“As a business owner your business is always on your mind — perhaps not the whole business, but some part of it,” Riepe said. “That need to achieve and continuously improve is consistent in the available research on entrepreneurship.”

In addition to her work in personal finance, Bruno is involved in several nonprofits such as 100 Women Who Care Omaha, the Omaha Public Library Foundation, the Financial Planning Association of Nebraska and the Women’s Center for Advancement. “Each one of the organizations that I’m a part of has been a different path that got me there,” she said. “My involvement with the library came from a passion for reading and sharing that passion with somebody who was in the right place at the right time. “But ultimately, I just want to give back to the community and I’m passionate about playing my part in that. As a young person, you can’t always do that with your dollars but you can [help] by serving and being engaged in sharing the work of the nonprofits.”

One of the ways Bruno hopes to make a difference is by getting more women involved in the world of financial planning. “This is a great business for women, especially because we’re relationship people,” she said. “And you know, we’re good at being focused on the relationship, which is really what people on the other side of the table want. They want to know that they’re working with someone that really cares about them and their family, more than about the actual dollars.”

Although finance tends to be a male-dominated industry, that did not stop Katie Bruno from jumping into the field. “There aren’t a lot of women mentors or people to look up to,” she said. “I’ve been lucky that I do have female mentors in my life, but I think that’s a challenge. So I want to be a part of changing the makeup of the industry.”

Bruno has spent her entire career working in personal finance and now carries her dedication and knowledge with her in her current role as a financial advisor at Morey & Quinn Wealth Partners. She specializes in divorce financial planning in which she works with divorcing couples to make financial decisions during and after the divorce.

Bruno describes financial planning as a rewarding industry because she can help people make financial decisions and see what’s possible from productively using their money. “People think that you have to have a lot of money to work with a financial adviser, and that’s simply not true,” she said. “Financial planning is a process. And it’s a process that really offers people hope. Because if they come to you, and they don’t think that they have the assets to work with an adviser, they can leave walking away knowing what they need to do to meet their goals.”

Bruno got involved in personal finance via an internship at Creighton University while she was a student. Her upbringing made the business stand out to her as something she wanted to work in.
