THINK WHOLE PERSON HEALTHCARE EXPANSION ADDS WEST OMAHA CLINIC

Think Whole Person Healthcare EXPANSION ADDS WEST OMAHA CLINIC

Physician-led primary care practice Think Whole Person Healthcare recently expanded by integrating the services of long-time practitioner Dr. Charles Stoner, and the approximately 1,000 patients he sees, into its network of providers.

Stoner’s Omaha Family Medicine practice at 17841 Pierce Plaza officially became a Think-branded clinic on August 2.

Fresh expansion

This marks the first time that Think, an accountable care organization (ACO), has added provider-patient services outside of its building at 7100 West Center Road.

Think, launched in Omaha in 2015, serves some 45,000 patients through its coordinated, collaborative network of providers, nurse coordinators and specialists. It is one of the largest independent primary care centers in the United States, employing more than 300 health care professionals.

“Being an ACO defines us. We have just a very narrow focus,” Think CEO Jason Doll said. “Our job is to treat patients in the outpatient setting and that’s it.

“We don’t have a hospital or a surgery center or a bunch of other things confusing the mission. Our focus has been on optimizing this building. Our focus now is on developing the West Omaha clinic, ironing out all those processes and getting them squared away.”

Doll said the decision to expand was Stoner’s fit within the organization’s culture. The fit goes both ways.

“Whole patient health care is essentially what I thought of as

comprehensive health care, which is trying to take care of all aspects of a patient’s health care,” Stoner said. “That includes preventive services like discussing diet and exercise and amending vaccinations, doing cancer screenings and blood screenings to detect chronic conditions early on, so that we can prevent complications. It’s also maintaining adequate availability for people as they get sick so you can see them in a timely manner.”

Aligned practices

Doll enlisted Stoner, who founded Omaha Family Medicine in 2003, to join Think because of his similar approach to medicine. The two knew each other from when they were at Lakeside Hospital.

“I have never worked with a physician group as aligned as this physician group,” Doll said. “These ladies and gentlemen are focused on quality and cost and keeping patients out of the hospital.”

To help doctors do that, Think built an infrastructure with the support staff needed to run the business. Stoner said he appreciates being relieved of the burden of running the business side of a clinic.

“Think provides a number of services that will take the load of business and office-type duties away from us, such as scheduling, billing, and keeping us supplied and staffed.”

Additionally, Stoner said, Think’s marketing apparatus will help him grow the practice faster than it has.

Think aims to distinguish itself with the clinical resources it provides to the doctors.

Think’s nurse care coordinator and clinical pharmacist are in regular contact with high-needs patients.
- JASON DOLL, CEO, THINK WHOLE

PERSON HEALTHCARE

“We provide a clinical pharmacist, a nurse care coordinator, 24-hour nurse triage that we handle ourselves,” Doll said. “We are in constant contact with patients.”

Staying on top of how patients are doing, noting any new complaints, is standard operating procedure at Think.

“Think’s nurse care coordinator and clinical pharmacist are in regular contact with high-needs patients,” Doll said.

Think’s regular nurse check-in calls with patients combined with its network of providers gives physicians like Stoner and his patients access to care for any specialized needs that arise.

“We have 45 providers,” Doll said. “While 30 of them are primary care like Dr. Stoner, we also have rheumatology, podiatry, optometry and behavioral. Those are very important specialties.

“We were very deliberate on those specialties because optometry and podiatry, for example, really help with our diabetic patients. Rheumatology keeps patients off the operating table. Seventy-five percent of hospital admissions have a behavioral component. We have a psychiatrist, a nurse practitioner, and behavioral counselors. We have a full lab here. We have a CT (computed tomography), two X-ray machines. We’re adding a second mammogram machine. We have DXA (bone density scan) and ultrasound.”

Stoner welcomes the extra eyes, ears, hands and tools, noting that it can enhance the patient experience and level of care.

“A large number of physicians, including specialty physicians, can be consulted on cases, nurse coordinators can help check in on patients in between office visits, and a pharmacy resource helps patients be more compliant with medications and helps protect against unexpected interactions between different meds or between medication and disease,” he said.

“Physical therapy, occupational therapy, counseling — those are all good ways to enhance the way we provide health care.”

Forgoing average

Doll said the average patient in the U.S. sees their doctor two times a year.

“Our average patient sees their physician four times a year,” he said. “While that’s a little more cost, we’re keeping them out of the hospital. We also create care protocols based on co-morbidity. Our docs are on the same page. Every doc knows what to do. Social workers, clinical pharmacists, dietitians know what to do. Everyone knows their role in that patient’s care path.”

With so many speacilties under one roof, referring patients is made easier.

“As a solo physician it was always up to me and my staff to go and find those services in the Omaha market for patients,” Stoner said.

“I do feel a sense of relief that it’s not always up to me to run down all the details of how we’re going to get the patients what they need. These paths have already been explored and developed and it will save me time and effort.”

Think’s data access heavily influences physician referral patterns.

“Because we’re an ACO we have access to claims data for every payer we have an ACO contract with,” he said. “So, we can tell our docs with every specialty in town which doctors are high quality and low cost or conversely low quality and high cost. Almost all docs care about that stuff. Armed with that data we find they start changing who they refer to.”

Think Whole Person currently ranks second nationwide in the Medicare Shared Savings Program for Traditional Medicare patients in correlation of cost and quality, according to Doll.

“Our cost per Medicare patient is 30% less than the average Medicare patient in the United States,” he said.

The cost-conscious philosophy was a draw for Stoner, who said delivering high quality health care with decreased costs is a win for patients, physicians and the health care system overall.

Doll said for him, personally, driving down the price of health care is the goal.

“We have to do something. I want to change health care. I want to benefit our community. That’s why growing outside this building is really exciting,” he said.

Driving change

Doll and Stoner concur that the things consumers complain about health care, namely its high cost, long waits, and short doctor visits, can only be addressed in a concerted way.

“I don’t think any one person can solve that problem,” Stoner said. “But when you have an organization like Think that tries to rally their people around the ideas that we need to be continuously improving the situation, then you can make progress over time.”

Before considering any potential new growth, Doll said the West Omaha clinic is the priority.

“We need to make sure that we’re driving down the price of health care for Dr. Stoner’s patients,” he said. “And if we can do that, which I’m 100% positive we will, then I think we have an opportunity to grow.”

As a veteran physician, Stoner is pleased to be part of an organization where everyone is motivated to put patients first and to think of them as more than their symptoms.

“The main thing for me before making an agreement was to get comfortable with the idea it would be a smooth transition for the patients as we went from Omaha Family Medicine to Think Whole Person Healthcare, and I believe we’re on a path to do that,” Stoner said.

“The people that have been working with us to make the transition have been excellent. I’m very impressed with their efficiency. I expect it won’t affect any particular patient in any adverse way. I think they’ll be comfortable with the change. In fact, if anything, they’ll see that they have broader resources available to them.”

NEBRASKA A TOP PLAYER IN FRANCHISE GROWTH

BLAKE MARTIN

FRANCHISE CONSULTANT, FRANNET

Leading experts in the field of franchising give the Cornhusker State high marks when it comes to corporate climate, work ethic and business performance, resulting in brisk growth in franchising across the board.

“Franchising is picking up steam right now. In fact, nearly 70% of Americans say they aspire to own a business, and a franchise is a safer way to own a business than starting something new on your own,” said Ryan Zink, co-founder and CEO of Franchise Sidekick. “A lot of people are looking to take control of their careers and franchising offers a solid, proven path.”

A national trend

Nebraska’s performance in this entrepreneurial sector mirrors trends playing out all over the United States. According to FranchiseClues.com, franchising exceeded projections last year with 2.2% growth in establishments, reaching 806,270 units, despite the challenging economic

conditions of high interest rates and ramped-up inflation.

One factor of success for these entrepreneurs is a willingness to do one’s homework. On this measurement, Nebraskans’ collective reputation for taking the conservative, measured approach has paid off handsomely. Zink said paying attention to the fundamentals first is paramount.

“A big mistake is jumping in without enough research or thinking you can go it alone,” he said. “Successful franchisors do their homework, know their competitive advantages, figure out lead flow for franchisees and invest in the right people.

One piece of advice they always give: speak to existing franchisees. Then, when you find the right franchise, lean into the support offered by the franchise.

“Following the established systems and choosing the right location are crucial, as are engaging with the franchise community, learning from others and taking advantage of available support,” Zink said. “We’ve seen how sticking to these basics makes all the difference.”

Coming back strong

DR. LINDSAY THOMSEN, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE IN MANAGEMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP, UNL COLLEGE OF BUSINESS’ CENTER FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Following this formula can help entrepreneurs overcome almost any challenge, even a global pandemic, which may help explain why COVID-19 did little to dampen the appetite for franchising. If anything, it gave people the opportunity and motivation to take their careers into their own hands.

“I noticed many people who lost their jobs and turned to franchises as a safer bet with built-in support,” he said. “By 2024, this interest hasn’t just stayed strong, it’s grown as more folks are seeing franchising as a way to build something stable and successful, even in uncertain times.”

Zink said another part of being successful in franchising is choosing the right industry, some of which he pegged for particularly robust growth.

“We’re seeing a big interest in service-based franchises, like home services and fitness, because they’re meeting the growing demand for convenience and personalization,” he said. “We’re helping more and more people explore these opportunities and find the right fit for them.”

Franchises that have historically been thought of as recession- or inflation-resistant still maintain a high level of interest according to Blake Martin, CFE and franchise specialist with FranNet.

“Think haircuts, home repair, water damage restoration, health care, or auto repair. These concepts provide services based on needs, not wants,” he said.

“Staffing businesses are also a hot commodity at the moment, where plenty of franchise concepts are thriving as they work to solve various labor shortages. Health and wellness franchises are booming as they focus on treating the obesity epidemic in America, as is the education and/or youth-enrichment sector, which is any business addressing children’s physical and cognitive activities.”

Good instincts, great support

Martin cited statistics by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Entrepreneurship that showed Nebraska consistently ranks in the top 10 in the country for franchise growth, with nearly 6,000 establishments employing about 60,000 people.

“I attribute this success to the state’s franchise owners who, by all accounts, are fairly savvy investors,” he said. “From my experiences

with clients over the past two decades, the entrepreneurs here are very discerning individuals who tend to choose wisely when it comes to opportunities that fit their specific ownership role, be it full-time, semiabsentee or the executive manager of multiple outlets.

The state’s balanced economic environment also helps safeguard the franchise community.

“If franchisees commit to following their proven business models and rely on the support from corporate and their fellow franchisees, they hold quite an advantage over those without access to such tools and resources,” he said.

Martin also praised the available resources for new entrepreneurs in the state, which he said provide critical information, coaching and support to new entrepreneurs.

“Nebraska has a robust support system for entrepreneurship and small business startups,” he said. “This is especially true of organizations that promote and support business activities such as SCORE, SourceLink Nebraska and a very active Small Business Administration network across the state.”

Educating future franchisees

Statistics suggest the momentum isn’t slowing down. FranchiseClues.com projected franchise activity this year will continue its upward momentum, increasing 1.9% in establishments to 821,589, and more than 4% in output to $894 billion.

Part of the population fueling that growth will likely be 20-somethings, as the popularity of the revived franchising curriculum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business’ Center for Entrepreneurship attests.

“We started with one class in the spring semester of 2022, and we only had a handful of students say yes to it. We actually had to cancel the first class,” said Dr. Lindsay Thomsen, assistant professor of practice in management and entrepreneurship, who was brought in specifically to revive the franchising educational program.

“We spent a full semester educating people and bringing in speakers and starting a franchise club. By the next semester, we put the class back on the books and had, I think, 27 students in that class. The following year CONTINUED

we offered the class and hit 50, and now we have a waitlist for the class.”

The growing interest among college-age would-be entrepreneurs has spurred partnerships between the university program and the business community. This summer, the Center for Entrepreneurship announced an educational partnership with Scooter’s Coffee to expose students to the real-life challenges that go into owning a successful franchise.

“I think some of the most important concepts for a student to learn are how to have a growth mindset and how to always be a student of life,” Thomsen said. “One way to do that is to help students recognize

The Pros and Cons of Buying an Existing Franchise

Essentially, there are three ways to become a business owner. You can buy an existing business and assume ownership, build your own from scratch, or join a network of franchise opportunities in a marketplace featuring thousands of options. Breaking this down in the simplest of terms for would-be entrepreneurs, this means you can “buy, build, or join,” your way to business ownership. Below, we discuss the pros and cons of buying an existing franchise opportunity, which is a unique combination of the ”buy” and “join” options.

Pros of Buying Into an Existing Franchise Opportunity

The most obvious advantage of buying into an existing franchise opportunity is inheriting an operation with everything in place – including staff, systems, operations, and vendor/supplier networks. Provided the business isn’t home or mobile-based, there’s no site selection, lease negotiations, and less overall risk. The selling price will likely be negotiable, with no initial fee to cover – only royalties. Best case scenario? You’ll inherit a low-cost franchise opportunity with a favorable location, stellar reputation, and existing customer base. All you’ll need to do is step in and take over a smooth operation.

Cons of Buying Into an Existing Franchise Opportunity

Caveat emptor means “buyer beware,” which is always sound advice when buying into an existing franchise opportunity. There’s no substitute for doing a thorough amount of due diligence, beginning with why the current owner is selling. Then conduct an in-depth review of the books to determine the financial health of the operation. When you buy an existing location, get the specifics on any resale fees, royalty rates, and length of term. Ask around about their reputation and check online reviews to get a good read on where things stand.

Existing franchise opportunities are always an option and there’s plenty to choose from. Just be sure to seek only the best franchise opportunities for your goals and lifestyle.

THE FRANCHISEE: COLD STONE CREAMERY

Q&A:

Q: Tell us about the business model of your franchise.

A: We are the “Ultimate Ice Cream Experience,” because it is an experience to come into our stores. The customer can choose from dozens of ice cream flavors that include permanent time-tested favorites (examples – Cake Batter, Mint, Strawberry, Chocolate, Cotton Candy, and our own version of vanilla we call Sweet Cream), as well as rotating limited-time-only flavors (examples – Blueberry Muffin, Cinnamon Roll, Fudge Dreamsicle). The ice cream is placed on a frozen slab of granite by our friendly team, and the customer gets to choose from dozens of mix-ins to complete their selection Examples of mix-ins include: peanuts, sprinkles, gummy bears, graham cracker crust, apple pie filling, caramel, Oreos, and many many more. We make small-batch ice cream in every store every day, nothing factory-bought here. And if you’re really feeling like indulging yourself, you can put your ice cream in a crisp waffle cone or bowl, again made fresh by hand in the store.

Q: Why did you choose this industry?

A: How great is it to work in an environment every day where people are happy to be there? Just the thought of an ice cream shop generally makes people feel better. Small children love ice cream, but their parents and grandparents might love it even more. Our target demographic is everyone.

Q: Why did you choose this franchise?

A: Cold Stone was founded in 1987 and you don’t thrive for almost 40 years if you don’t have a compelling product. We are the industry leader with approximately 1,300 locations including internationally. I’m proud to be associated with the brand. The operations, marketing, and technology support that we receive are worth the royalty payments we make. There is a strong network of other franchisees to collaborate with.

Q: What was the process of starting your franchise?

A: Due diligence. I investigated dozens of concepts. I wasn’t interested in a “turnaround.” I wasn’t interested in a brand-new concept because name brand recognition is inherently valuable. And of course, it had to be profitable. Once I determined that Cold Stone met these and other criteria I had for investment, I reached out to them. At that point they vetted me. What was my background and experience? What were my goals? What were my strengths and skillsets? And of course – How much capital did I have to invest? It was basically a professional dating scenario, each side checking out the other to ensure it was a good fit. When you are investing hundreds of thousands of dollars, and eventually millions over time, that’s important.

Q: What challenges have you faced?

A: The Great Recession, COVID-19, supply chain disruptions, roaring inflation, labor shortages, rapidly increasing minimum wage – And we’re still serving fantastic ice cream with a smile.

Q: What have been your biggest wins?

A: Every time we see a customer smiling after eating our delicious ice cream – that’s a win. And we’ve had hundreds of thousands of those over the years. Personally, I consider it a win when I look at the longevity of the team of employees we have built over the years. We have a general manager in each store who is responsible for the day-to-day operations. Most of that GM team has been with us for years – and that experience shows in the excellent product served in a sparkling clean store by an enthusiastic team of mostly young people. Low turnover in leadership positions is a win.

Q: How have you grown?

A: We purchased three locations from the original owner. Those were in Village Pointe, Midtown Crossing, and 120th & Blondo. Since then we have doubled that footprint to six locations and spread out geographically around the city. We built in Aksarben Village, Southport (La Vista by Cabelas and Costco), and our newest store is at Nebraska Crossing in Gretna. We are conveniently located near you, wherever you are. We also tripled the size of our Village Pointe store by knocking down a wall and expanding into a vacant bay adjacent to us. And if you are a hockey fan, we are a proud partner of UNO athletics and are located inside Baxter Arena at UNO hockey games. All that growth means we have increased from 45 employees to approximately 180 and counting. In terms of revenue growth, that equates to 132% under our watch and we are proud of that.

Q: What does the future hold?

A: We are eternally optimistic. We’ve got a great team of people serving a great product. We have a track record of steady and sustainable growth and plan to continue that at our own pace. Residents of Bellevue, Council Bluffs, Elkhorn, and Bennington are entitled to world-class ice cream in their neighborhoods. So who knows, maybe we will be expanding Cold Stone Creamery into some or all of those locations.

Fōwling Warehouse

Football and bowling have been combined for a new kind of entertainment at Fōwling Warehouse.

“I was looking to bring something new to Omaha,” said Mark Wolf, co-founder. “Fōwling Warehouse is enjoyed by both men and women and all sorts of demographics. We can have somebody in a suit and tie next to a person who may be a mechanic. It really does appeal to everyone.”

What is Fōwling?

Pronounced FOE-ling, the concept replaces bowling balls with a football with which competitors attempt to knock down regulation size bowling pins by throwing the ball overhand or underhand. The object is to knock down the opponent’s pins before they knock down yours.

The distance of the throw varies according to one of two lines — from the amateur line, it’s about 25 feet while throwing from the pro line adds about 10 feet.

The first Fōwling Warehouse opened in Michigan in 2014 and has

since expanded to other franchised locations. Wolf, who owns the concept with childhood friend Dan Fishburn, said he was looking for something different after decades in the local business community running his family’s firm.

“I came from the corporate world where it was stressful and sometimes not very fun,” he said. “I was out researching new franchises throughout the United States, and I stumbled upon the Fōwling Warehouse, headquartered in Detroit, Michigan.

He called friends who lived in Detroit and asked them if they had heard of the franchise. After an enthusiastic response, Fishburn thought Omaha could be the next location.

Finding the right space

Bringing the business to life proved to be especially tricky when it came to finding an appropriate venue. Wolf said it was “almost impossible” to locate a warehouse offering the combination of

I have two simple rules for this business — make it easy and fun — and this is both.

- MARK WOLF, CO-OWNER, FŌWLING WAREHOUSE

accessibility, amenities and massive 50,000 square feet the partners desired.

“If you look at warehouses throughout Omaha, or any other major city, if you can find the building, there usually isn’t sufficient parking,” he said.

“We looked for three years until this space became available. This building was an old telemarketing company and it had 10 by 10 walls throughout. We had to gut the whole thing and bring it down to the shell and build it back up.”

The venue not only includes the competitive area, featuring 30 Fōwling lanes but doubles as an event space for up to 1,200 people. There are also smaller meeting spaces created with groups and corporate clients in mind, which gives the business versatility in serving different customers.

“We’re really focusing on three categories,” Wolf said. “No. 1 is friends and family coming out and having a good time. No. 2 is corporate, where they can bring employees in for team building and have team outings, and No. 3 is providing a place to nonprofits in Omaha where they can come and promote their organization.”

The business, the ninth franchise in the country, also features two full-service bars and plenty of big-screen TVs for game day. Offering family-friendly open play during the day, Fōwling Warehouse is reserved for patrons 21 and over from 8 p.m. until close.

Wolf said while there’s no menu offered, customers can bring in their own food and future promotions will likely include food truck nights, with multiple trucks to offer variety and sate appetites.

Ready to compete

Another plan for the immediate future is the creation of formal leagues to augment the open Fōwling times and corporate or other groups. Fōwling has caught on to the degree that those looking to compete have the opportunity to advance to a sanctioned national competition.

As part of the American Fōwling Association, the Omaha location will have both a fall and spring league. The top teams from the spring league, which starts in April, will go to a national championship. Last year the championship hosted over 120 fōwlers, Wolf said.

CO-OWNER DAN FISHBURN DEMONSTRATES THE GAME OF FŌWLING BY THROWING A FOOTBALL AT HIS OPPONENT’S SET OF PINS.

Fōwling Warehouse, located at 5585 N. 90th St., hosted a series of special events starting Aug. 15 to introduce the concept to media, dignitaries and the business community. Wolf said he’s looking forward to watching Omaha’s newest weekend activity grow as more people discover the unique sport.

“Interest has been steady,” he said. “We are primarily advertising through social media Facebook and Instagram on the public side, LinkedIn on the corporate side. We get numerous phone calls a day asking about it.

“I think people are really going to like it. I have two simple rules for this business make it easy and fun and this is both.”

SPIKE IN SPORTS BRINGS TOURISM, REVENUE

Omaha has had a storied history with sports. It’s been the home of the NCAA Men’s College World Series since 1950 (74 years, if you do the math). The Creighton Bluejays are one of the oldest men’s basketball teams in the country, founded in 1900. Omaha is home to household names like Johnny Rogers, Bob Boozer, Eric Crouch, Bob Gibson and Terence Crawford.

Over the past five years, Omaha has seen a boom in professional sports, with the addition of indoor and outdoor pro soccer teams, two professional volleyball teams, and a potential curling facility on the horizon.

All of these bring in tourism, impacting the economic vitality of the city.

Throwing weight

Did you know that curling has been an active sport in Omaha since 1960?

“In the late ‘90s and early 2000s we had teenage boys and girls who won not only national championships, but bronze, silver, and gold medals [at the World Junior Championships],” said Nic Swiercek, vice president of the Aksarben Curling Association.

When the Ak-Sar-Ben Race Track closed, and the land was sold in the early 2000s, the association lost its home. Since then, it’s been bouncing between ice rinks, but may soon have a new home.

On April 27, 2024, the Omaha City Council approved a construction agreement between the city and the Aksarben Curling Association for a curling facility. The facility will be built at Tranquility Park on 122nd Street and West Maple Road and will cost an estimated $7 million, to be raised by the association.

Swiercek said the association board is confident it can raise the money based on the growing demand.

For example, the Omaha Sports Commission, in collaboration with Visit Omaha, provided numbers for when Omaha hosted the 2017 Olympic Curling team trials in 2017 vs. 2021.

In 2017 there were 21,000 spectators, 30 athletes, and an economic impact of over $1 million. In 2021 there were 27,700 spectators, 60 athletes,

and an economic impact of over $1 million again.

When Omaha isn’t hosting an event, the association has a membership of 200, 20% of which live outside of Douglas County.

“We’ve had people who curl with us regularly that come from as far away as Kansas and Des Moines,” Swiercek said. “They do that because their clubs [in Kansas City or Des Moines] don’t have any times that worked with their schedules.”

He also noted that the association turns down 10-12 private event requests each month due to a lack of available ice.

“Private events would help subsidize a lot of our community [outreach],” he said.

Opportunities like hosting scouting troops to experience the sport, or the ability to offer high school field trips.

“Some organizations do science demonstrations with local high schoolers because the curling stones and the ice create a dynamic environment where you can see physics at play,” he said.

They’d also like to offer a wheelchair curling program in collaboration with Adaptive Sports Nebraska. Curling is one of the few sports that individuals of any age or ability can participate in. Its youngest member is 5 years old, and Swiercek said several members in their 80s are playing.

With a dedicated facility, the association will be able to host more leagues, introduction classes, private events, and social events and competitions.

“USA Curling has committed to bringing in national events when we open our facility,” Swiercek said.

The association is currently in the fundraising phase but hopes to have the facility operating by 2027.

Aiming for a goal

Internationally, football (known in the U.S. as soccer) is the most popular sport. However, in the U.S. it’s been slow to catch fire. Regardless, there has been a surge of interest in the Omaha area over the

last couple of years, reflecting an increasingly diverse population.

Omaha Kings co-founder Emmanuel Viel emigrated from Argentina where his father was a professional soccer player.

“When my parents brought me here in ‘99 during a civil crisis, my goal was to bring the love of the game here,” he said. “It’s a lifestyle and a culture, not a game. It’s a way of getting out of poverty and helping your family.”

Emmanuel Viel who previously played for the Omaha Vipers before the club folded, founded the indoor soccer team with Natalie Viel, his wife, in 2020. From the start, their goal was to invest in the community by finding local talent to rally behind and support.

“I wanted to show myself, and others, that the American dream was still alive; that when you have goals and dreams you can achieve them,”

Emmanuel Viel said.

Unfortunately, indoor soccer is struggling with the same issues as curling: a lack of available space and awareness.

Natalie Viel said there is a lot of confusion about the differences between indoor and outdoor soccer. For example, indoor soccer has six players rather than 11, and the playing field tends to be smaller making things “intense.”

“It’s hockey, lacrosse, and basketball put together,” Emmanuel Viel said. When they were looking for a venue to host the MLIS (Major League Indoor Soccer) Final Four Tournament in March of 2024 it was a challenge to find a location. Eventually, they partnered with Baxter Area.

“A lot of people don’t understand the difference, and that was the feedback that Baxter Arena gave us,” she said. “They said they loved the game, but they didn’t understand the rules.”

The Final Four matches brought in 2,000 spectators and formed a relationship with Baxter Arena that the duo hopes to utilize next season when they add a women’s team, the Omaha Queens. Plans include a youth division down the road.

Serving up success

While Nebraska has a good track record with collegiate women’s volleyball — last year University of Nebraska volleyball broke the world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event with 92,003 fans in attendance — Omaha Supernovas Team President Diane Mendenhall pointed out that a pro women’s volleyball team in the U.S. is still novel.

There are only three professional leagues in the U.S.: Athletes Unlimited (first five-week season in 2021), the Pro Volleyball Federation (first season in January 2024), and LOVB (first season to begin November 2024).

Despite being a startup organization, Mendenhall said Omaha has rallied around the team.

“We had sponsors jump on board that had never seen a professional volleyball match in their life and had no idea what our attendance would be,” she said.

“We couldn’t give them [an estimate] on their ROI, but they jumped in because of their commitment to the city, and providing these women the first opportunity to play professionally in the United States.”

The first season concluded with 19 players — regulations limit the roster to 16, but three injuries bumped the count up — the majority of whom relocated, both from across the country and the world.

The first season was considered an overwhelming success not only because the Omaha Supernovas became the inaugural PVF Champions, but because the team broke three attendance records for a professional indoor volleyball match: the inaugural game on Jan. 24 had 11,624 spectators, followed by 11,918 on February 18 and 12,090 on March 16.

The previous attendance record for an indoor professional women’s volleyball match was 10,000 spectators at the 2016 Olympic qualifier (also in Lincoln, Nebraska).

Season tickets were sold in 10 states, and individual tickets were purchased in 44 states. The matches were broadcast via News Channel Nebraska, and the CBS Sports Network “picked up the final 10 matches of the League, three matches for us including the final two.”

Now the focus is on preparing for the next season.

“I tell our staff that we’re building this airplane as we’re flying it,” Mendenhall said. “This is our first offseason, so we’re focused on 2025. Everything from obtaining sponsorships to selling season tickets and renewals. We’re signing contracts for our team.”

Inspiration and Connection

INAUGURAL HUSTLE

Entrepreneurs are an interesting bunch, say Curt Drew and Eric Gautschi, co-founders of the inaugural HUSTLE Entrepreneurship Conference taking place on October 9 at Creighton University’s Heider College of Business. They tend to be dynamic. They’re willing to take risks. They are usually resourceful and even innovative.

“We really believe that if you bring a bunch of entrepreneurs together in one place, good things are going to happen,” Gautschi said.

“This is a passion project for Eric and I. We love entrepreneurship, and we felt there was a void in our marketplace, in this region, for an event to bring together all these different groups of entrepreneurs to get connected, to inspire them, to educate them,” Drew said. “There’s that spark that’s created through these connections. We want to be that spark for people to get inspired and grow.

“The grassroots of economic development is entrepreneurship. Those engines of job growth can really impact our economy.”

Drew and Gautschi know firsthand about entrepreneurship. Drew leads several ventures including National Radon Defense, Radon Defense

Midwest, and Fish Window Cleaning, and is also a member of EO (Entrepreneurs’ Organization) Nebraska. Gautschi is co-owner of video and film production company Matchcut Productions. Through a former role with The New BLK, an ad agency and production company, he was also involved with past entrepreneur-oriented events Big Omaha and the Maha Discovery conference.

Entrepreneurial landscape

The HUSTLE conference is meant for both established businesses and promising newer ventures, Gautschi said.

“I think it’s a mix we really see from startup to exit and everything in between,” Gautschi said. “It’s small business owners and entrepreneurs, but it’s also the rest of the sort of entrepreneurial landscape here. It includes investors, it includes law firms and banks and consultants and advisers. It’s all the people who are in the trenches every day with entrepreneurs helping them be successful.”

HUSTLE is sponsored in part by the Greater Omaha Chamber, along

with Google, Invest Nebraska, EO Nebraska, Goosmann Law, Ervin & Smith, and other organizations.

The HUSTLE Entrepreneurship Conference’s mission is “to engage, promote, and grow the local and regional entrepreneurship community in Nebraska and the Midwest.” Content includes breakout sessions with topics such as “10xing your Business,” “Startup and Small Business Capital,” “Advice from the CEO’s Attorney,” “Attracting and Retaining Talent,” “Branding Toolkit,” “Marketing Strategy,” and “AI for Entrepreneurs.” Other content includes panel and roundtable discussions, Q&A, and networking activities. An array of speakers includes locals such as restaurant entrepreneur Willy Theisen, Goosmann Law Firm’s Jeana Goosmann, and Do More Good movement founder Jay Wilkinson. Conference activities begin at 7:30 a.m. at Heider and continue throughout the day, and an afterparty will take place at Brickway Brewery in the Old Market.

Compelling keynotes

The conference will also feature two globally recognized entrepreneurs as keynote speakers: Franziska Iseli and Lewis Schiff.

Iseli is a brand strategist, author and co-founder of Basic Bananas, Oceanlovers, Moments of Humanity and The Data People. Her books include “The Courage Map: 13 Principles to Living Boldly,” “Perception: Take Charge of How Others View Your Brand,” and “Bananas About Marketing: How to Attract a Whole Bunch of Customers.” She has been featured in Inc., Forbes, Business Insider, and SmartCompany magazines.

“We wanted her to close our conference and talk about courage, about making commitments from this conference … and show courage to push

and plow forward through adversity,” Drew said.

Lewis Schiff is the Chairman of Birthing of Giants: The Princeton Fellowship Program for Business and Moonshots and Moneymakers: The Oxford Innovation Conference for Business Leaders held at Oxford University. He is also the host of the video series, “How I Did It: Step-by-Step Explainer Videos from Fast-Growth Entrepreneurs.” Schiff founded Inc. Magazine’s Business Owners Council and has written several books on success, including “The First Habit: The One Technique That Can Change Your Life” and “Business Brilliant: Surprising Lessons from the Greatest Self-Made Business Icons.” Schiff also built and sold two media businesses to publicly traded companies iVillage and TheStreet.com.

“He’s kind of a coach and advisor to a lot of really successful entrepreneurs,” Gautschi said. “So we’re really, really excited about him.”

More details on the conference, as well as registration information, are available at hustleconference.com.

“It’s going to be different than any other conference that people have been to,” Drew said.

“The thing that will be familiar to people is the keynote speech,” Gautschi said. “But everything else, we’re kind of playing with the format a little bit. We want things to move quickly. We want them to be really fun, really engaging, high energy. So we’re trying some new things with it, just to kind of see what people respond to and to keep it lively.”

As entrepreneurs do, Drew and Gautschi are already expecting the conference to not only succeed but also grow and evolve.

“Next year, we’ll probably go back and fine-tune and try some new things,” Gautschi said.

Limb Lab

A FOCUS ON THE INDIVIDUAL

Through collaboration and creativity, Limb Lab strives to provide the best care possible to those experiencing the challenges that come with limb loss.

An independently owned and operated prosthetic and orthotic company, Limb Lab focuses on the bond between clinicians and client to ensure that every individual feels heard and understood.

“Our motto here is, ‘What do you want to do?’ So, we’re asking them: What are their goals? What do they want to do? And letting that set our expectations for everything,” said Vincent Lau, certified/ licensed prosthetist orthotist and Omaha market leader.

With a focus on artistry and innovation, the Omaha team is always trying out the latest technology to find the best solution for their clients.

One of the latest technologies the team has been working with is improved 3D scanning of limbs or body parts. Lau said that they even used this technology to scan someone’s face to create a custom face mask.

“In terms of technology, at Limb Lab we’re encouraged to use the best technology out there available to everyone,” Lau said. “We’re constantly getting training on new stuff.”

Raising awareness

Limb Lab is a member of the Amputee Coalition, a national organization that empowers people experiencing limb loss to achieve their full potential.

The Nebraska offices of Limb Lab also recently worked with the Amputee Wellness Alliance of the Midlands for its Blade 5K event to make two arms for Paralympic hopeful Petra Luteran.

“We had a training arm for her where she can do push-ups and pull-ups and weightlifting and all sorts of stuff,” Lau said. “And then another arm specific to running and long jump. She competed in the Para Athlete World Championships in Japan … and has qualified for the Paralympic team for her home country of Hungary.”

The Omaha office opened in March of last year and has been working on breaking into the market. However, its hard work has not gone unnoticed as the company was recognized as the Greater Omaha Chamber business of the month.

Lau said the Limb Lab team feels honored to have their clinical care noticed and hopes that it helps to spread the word so they can continue to provide more quality care to people.

“Some of the things that we’re working on is just making sure that people know that Limb Lab is here to stay … that we’re growing and that we are here to offer the best patient care possible,” Lau said.

Q. Tell us about your business.

A. I work at FNBO, which is a $31 billion bank with a physical presence scattered throughout the Midwest. I have oversight for our corporate team, along with a few verticals — finance, health care, transportation and financial institutions.

Q. Can you share some of the key growth drivers that your company is currently focusing on, and how do you prioritize them in your overall strategy?

A. We are a privately owned company that is always seeking to find good business partners and offer them our banking products and services. One of the newer verticals we have is sponsor finance, and we are working with various funds or family offices, primarily throughout the Midwest. We have actually leveraged the ACG relationships outside of Omaha in Minneapolis, St. Louis, Dallas, Kansas City and Denver to expand our network in this vertical.

Q. In today’s rapidly changing business landscape, how does your company stay ahead of the curve and identify emerging trends that could impact your growth trajectory?

A. In addition to being involved with various trade associations similar to ACG, networking and what we’re hearing from our clients probably matters the most. We rely upon the various information we get from the financial industry experts and technology, and at the end of the day, what we are hearing from our customers. ACG brings all of those folks together and is a great way to leverage relationships and learn and have better focus on more growth opportunities in our desired markets.

Q. Can you share a specific example of a recent growth initiative that your company has implemented, and what lessons have you learned from its successes or challenges?

A. Sponsor finance is a newer strategy within the last few years and the network we’ve established through various centers of influence, through Omaha’s ACG chapter, along with the additional ACG chapters in key cities where we’re looking to find good business partners. So, attendance in person has been critical for our success as we grow our network throughout the entire Midwest.

Q. How does your company balance short-term financial performance with long-term growth objectives, and what role does sustainability play in your growth strategy?

A. We are a privately controlled bank and the Lauritzen family are the primary shareholders. Therefore, we can operate with a much longer

view and not be so concerned about short-term or outside influences as maybe a publicly traded organization might. So, we see that as a huge advantage for us. Now that we’re approaching 170 years in history, we’re always looking to the future gains for us and our customers.

Q. What advice would you give to other business leaders who are looking to accelerate their growth, particularly in the current economic climate?

A. Networking and leveraging your peers and customers is possibly the most important thing to sustain growth, to find new opportunities and earn trust with your potential clients and centers of influence that can assist you in attaining new clients and growth.

According to RFBC information, the center will prioritize:

• Food and farm entrepreneurs who are indigenous, immigrant, people of color, veterans, and otherwise disadvantaged, such as those with physical disabilities.

• Food and farm entrepreneurs who are eager and ready to build their enterprises, from startup through growth.
