Throughout his marketing career, Hurrdat President Bill Hipsher was frequently frustrated by the scatter-shot way in which projects came together. And so, for nearly the past 10 years, he’s devoted his time and strategic vision to building a different kind of marketing company. “The original company I founded with Brandon Taylor in 2012 was B2 Interactive,” Hipsher said. “At that time, there was a huge disconnect between what was happening with websites and what was happening with building your online presence. You’d go to someone to build your website and then you’d go to someone else to build your online presence. “When we started it was how can we bring these two things together? That really didn’t exist in Omaha. We wanted to have as much under one roof as possible and continue to find these pieces.” From that seminal idea Hurrdat has grown into a renaissance Continued on page 5.

Meanwhile, they only have to work with one account executive to see their project from start to finish as they connect with the experts in our company to see things through.” Hurrdat’s business philosophy has been exceptionally fruitful. The company serves clients in 43 states, representing 3,000 business locations. Hipsher proudly ascribes the term “agnostic” to the client mix. “Finance, real estate, travel, hospitality, restaurants, you name it and we’ve touched on it and probably work in it,” he said. “We do a lot of work for national companies — the huge companies that you always want to put on your masthead — but small businesses are the foundation of the pyramid and everything builds up from there. Our sweet spot has been building solutions for small- and
medium-sized businesses.” To wit, the company developed Local Search Fuel last year, an affordable SEO optimization tool targeting this client demographic. It also pushed up the release date from fourth quarter 2020 to second quarter 2020 in response to the pandemic and initially gave the product away for free. “Over the years, we’ve been working on how do we help a small business find customers effectively and in a cost-efficient manner online to compete with these larger companies who have massive budgets and drown out a small business with their marketing dollars?” he said. “This solution is really affordable, so any size business can compete and be found in Local Search Fuel and have a website solution. We developed a partnership with American Express and Capital One to put it in their small business packages to offer it to small- and medium-sized businesses across the country.” After a decade of change and growth, Hipsher is allowing himself and his company a breather, saying he’s satisfied with the mix of services and expertise — for now. “I don’t feel like we have a lot of gaps right now to be able to meet what comes in the future, especially with the team we have,” he said. “That doesn’t mean that we won’t change, but right now and for the next few years, I have a hard time seeing where we don’t have that media and marketing spectrum fairly well covered.”

concerns of children and relatives as the seniors relocate to larger facilities such as assisted living. “Our software provides better care and service to senior living customers while enhancing family and resident engagement,” she said. LifeLoop software was used by 700 senior living communities last year and by the end of this year Johnson expects that number to hit 900. Users range from an independently owned facility in North Bend, Nebraska, to some of the nation’s largest senior residential communities with up to 60 properties across multiple states. Johnson, who received a family sciences/ human resources degree from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, said at present the average customer has about 20 communities. “At present, we’re assessing the vertical market potential of our product,” she said. “What we’ve founded is based on the immense need for more communication between communities, residents and family members and that continues to be our guiding light today. “Because of this our communication platform is truly an all-in-one solution to create greater operational efficiencies.” In caregiving situations, residents, family, staff, and community vendors can more effectively customize communications via LifeLoop to include delivery preferences such as portal/mobile app, as well as email. Attachments and photos can be added to communications. Johnson said LifeLoop’s firm name means keeping all parties “in the loop” with the latest in information at their fingertips. A platform consolidates all non-clinical information — digital signage, transportation requests and maintenance needs— into one. “What we offer is a very concierge product,” Johnson said, noting that a resident’s biography lists agreed upon preferences regarding personal communication needs and categories of information to be collected. “The staff (of the facility) then can work more efficiently, and increased satisfaction
can be achieved on the part of the residence, the family and the staff,” she added. Special items might run the gamut from the need for electronic access to a Yankees game to wearing a particular item of clothing or accessory in planning for a day’s activity. Resident “engagement” in daily activities can easily be monitored and reported to family members and staff. Apps have been developed for staff, family and resident use. “We’ve built our whole platform around the concept of engagement with COVID-19 adaptations such as links to in-room activities such as chair aerobics, virtual tours of museums and other opportunities that will take family engagement to the next level,” Johnson said. “Every feature we’ve added to the product is based on customer feedback and they are generally adopted more quickly. We get 25 requests a week for features to add to LifeLoop.” Innovation has been important to the growth of LifeLoop in the U.K. It became a surprise marketing tool for Birchgrove beginning last October. Birchgrove, knowing
that senior living occupancy rates were becoming strained, adopted the idea of offering prospective residents a two-week window of time where a potential resident could move in and see if they felt at home. Matthew Steere, head of data and customer insights for Birchgrove, reported to LifeLoop that the Omaha-developed platform provided important tracking to help caregivers better understand the residents, not only in terms of physical health, but also the correlations between engagement, stimulation and activity level. “Those [LifeLoop] charts serve as a visual manifestation of what the resident is going through,” he said. “For the entire staff the resident reporting information now serves as a great audit trail for checks and balances.” Johnson sees growth opportunities continue to open in the U.K. In the U.S., the Omaha corporation has five competitors. “We’re the youngest and right there with our growing brand in a small industry,” she said. Johnson credits a series of good hiring de-
cisions and early collaboration with Nebraska-based Aviture, a consulting company, as being important to the success of LifeLoop. She and Lee had no experience with entrepreneurial or startup businesses when the senior housing needs of a family member sparked their idea for LifeLoop, but they had only minimal technological experience. “The technology we needed didn’t exist,” she said. Leaders at Aviture saw tremendous growth opportunities in the senior living market, but were interested in how technology could be applied to specific needs. What resulted was a multi-faceted platform designed to streamline operations, workflow, and communication with internal and external stakeholders in each community. LifeLoop Vice President Nick Nemer has been named a 2021 Future Leader for senior housing by Aging Media Nework, Inc., a Chicago based publisher following health care industry innovation. Johnson is a past recipient of the Midlands Business Journal Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Company of the Midwest has not only grown in size, but in its leadership and reputation to provide quality services done right the first time, every time. This is the ‘Commonwealth Way’ — a standard of expertise we have upheld for more than 34 years.”
Today, the company has over 875 employees and revenues surpass $200 million company wide. Growth has been steady year after year and Price credits that to a few key factors. “Our employees are what makes Commonwealth, and they are the main reason for our success,” he said. “Our people are our biggest asset, and it is our people that set us apart from other contractors in our industry. Our sound business practices help guide us in our day-to-day operations, but it is our people that make the difference. “Recently, on Easter Sunday in fact, one of our customers in Des Moines had a high voltage failure that shut down part of the hospital’s power system. We got the call and mobilized a diverse group, nearly a dozen, of our employees. They left their families at home and at church, came together as a team and working late into the evening, made the repairs needed to restore power for the hospital. Our project manager was there for the duration supporting our electricians throughout the unexpected shutdown.” Price said that a commitment to building rapport with customers is something they value.
“We have fantastic customers,” Price said. “We pride ourselves on developing our customer relationships and work hard to do what we say and say what we do. We work hard to earn our customers’ trust and keep it. Most of our customer relationships last for decades. We build great relationships with them and focus on their needs. We take a personal sense of ownership in their projects and the work we do for them.” Over the years, there have been many ups and downs for the company. The challenges of navigating a volatile economy, labor shortages, adapting to technological changes, and now the pandemic, are just some of the things that Commonwealth Electric Company of the Midwest has had to tackle. “You name it, we have likely dealt with it,” Price said. Looking ahead, the future is bright for the company and Price is thrilled about what is coming. “It is truly an exciting time here at Commonwealth Electric Company of the Midwest,” he said. “We have experienced a lot of changes in recent years … we plan to continue the steady, consistent growth path we are on.”
PPP loan borrowers under $150,000 get forgiveness through new portal by Erin Arvedlund

Now, banks and businesses that opt-in to participate have a one-stop online location for borrowers Small business to apply for forgiveness within this SBA-driven site: directforgiveness. sba.gov. Lenders can review the application and issue decisions within the same platform. “The SBA’s new streamlined application portal will simplify forgiveness for millions of our smallest businesses —

These entrepreneurs are busy running their businesses and are challenged by an overly complicated forgiveness process. We need to deliver forgiveness more efficiently so they can get back to enlivening our Main Streets, sustaining our neighborhoods, and fueling our nation’s economy,” she added. Some PPP lenders are opting not to participate in this portal, particularly those

The benefits, challenges of keeping businesses in the family: COVID-19 and beyond by Michelle Leach
In its 2021 Family Business Survey, PwC characterized U.S. family business performance over the last pre-pandemic financial year as “reasonably strong” with 82% anticipating growth this year and almost all respondents (at 96%) anticipating growth in 2022. As a percentage of total businesses, these organizations collectively might be described as “small but mighty,” as statistics reported by Grand Valley State University’s Family Business Institute note that only 30% of family businesses successfully transition to the second generation. Similarly, Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce President and Chief Administrative Officer, Karen Gibler, estimates that fewer than 5% of its membership are family businesses. “These owners work hard and have high hopes of their children taking over the ‘family-owned business,’” she said. “It is a great success story for the family that accomplished this tradition of handing down the business to the kids. “Unfortunately, we are seeing this dwindle a bit.” She noted this is especially true of those members in the “small business” category. “Children of these hard-working businesses owners are seeing the hard work, sacrifices and hard decisions their parents have had to make for so many years and, when it’s time for Mom and Dad to retire, they just aren’t ready to take on the workload and the decisions that may come with it,” Gibler said. “In the past couple of years, I have seen longtime, family-owned businesses sold to one of their key employees instead of handing down to the kiddos. Their legacy is still being carried on — just through

While the family’s business footprint continues to grow, Harrison acknowledges it hasn’t been easy. “All of the craziness of the coronavirus hit the family-owned and the mom-and-pop restaurants the hardest,” she said. “The rising costs of food are astronomical.” Specifically, she referenced a 15% surge in food costs — “must-haves” for soul food cuisine like chicken and oils — and even basic supplies like napkins are getting more expensive. Additionally, a lot of growers that supply products like tomatoes for their fried green tomatoes had a poor crop this season, which has constrained the supply of some foods. “My concern is that, like most retail in this country, the chain restaurants are going to eventually outnumber or do away with most of Continued on page 10.

Strategic planning for the future of a family business by Brooke Strickland
Running a family business takes dedication, patience, creativity and passion. As a business owner, having a vision is important, but to make that a reality, strategic planning for the future of the company is key. The importance of creating a plan Every company needs to establish clear, simple goals and plans. Without those, the company could be left in a free-fall, with little direction on where to go next. Goals and plans must be thought out with Slupe careful precision and communicated with the entire team, so they are clearly understood. “In order for a business to effectively flourish, it is very important to create plans toward strategic directions on a regular basis,” said Lynne Lange, executive leadership coach and consultant with Mission Matters. “Not only does this allow the organization to build clarity around what they truly aspire to accomplish by developing a shared group vision, but it also paints a picture of how the organization will collectively move forward.” Jill Slupe, CEO of Verde Martin, said that family businesses in Nebraska and beyond have already started recognizing the importance of planning and are paving the way for other businesses to do the same. “Numerous studies indicate that family

He suggested starting with an assessment “In order to create passion for and belief and then defining what is needed to stabilize. in the process, employees at all levels must
feel ownership … knowing that they play an important role for the future of the organization,” she said. When it comes to developing a solid plan for the future growth of the company — or even the transition of the company from one family member to another — it is important to keep mission at the forefront of all plans. “Family business leaders are committed to taking care of the enterprise and handing it over to the next generation in better condition than when they received it,” Slupe said. “If you ask a family business owner, who do they work for? They answer ‘for my kids and their kids.’ I see them Kluver living by their company values and the family working together to obtain their goals.” When it comes to running a successful business, the future really boils down to what you do now. Navigating the ups and downs of business ownership takes teamwork, communication, and a commitment to the success of the family business. “Strategic planning is an absolute must if any organization, individual or family is looking to grow,” Kluver said. “Without investing the time to choose where you want to go and how you are going to get there, you are destined to live a very reactionary life. If want to unify your organization and achieve more then you ever thought possible, it starts with the senior leadership defining where they want to go and then orchestrating a plan to achieve it.”

The right coaching and resources can help a business thrive by Dwain Hebda
Experts say family businesses are not the easiest arrangement but adhering to some simple rules can help ensure it is a successful one. Jay Wilkinson, who launched Firespring with his wife Tawnya Starr, said the couple discovered early on the value of maintaining strict division of labor. “Without question, the single most important thing is having a very distinct and well-defined separation on whose responsible and accountable for what,” Wilkinson said. “That in itself is 80% of the challenge of dealing with other family members whether it’s a spouse, a child, a parent, whatever.” Wilkinson said trying to co-manage often ends in chaos. “Nearly all of those scenarios later end in frustration and anguish as people get into these tug-of-wars,” he said. “Clearly defining who’s responsible and who’s accountable for what makes it so much more likely you’re going to get through things without major carnage.” Ed Foy, founder of Foy Financial Services said slotting people into roles where they can be successful is a key to a family working as a team. Foy employs three family members, each with a specific job responsibility. “While all of our jobs are related, there is actually very little overlap,” he said. “As a result, there is very little inter-office competition or friction. We each know what we are responsible for. We all share the primary mission for the firm, which is to help our clients in their financial affairs.
“My goal early on was to have a team approach; I did not want to just be ‘The Boss,’ although I retained that authority. I wanted everyone to work as a team. My family does

Develop leadership as part of any succession plan by Dwain Hebda
Within family-owned businesses, succession planning is not something to be taken for granted. Experts say family-owned businesses are often the most challenging to hand off, due to emotional ties and lack of communication. “It is often hard in family-owned businesses to separate work relationships from personal ones,” said Ryan McGregor, consulting director with Lutz. “This will
always be a fine line within family-owned businesses, but sometimes the chemistry is what makes the business succeed, so it does not always have to be an issue.” McGregor said having regular conversations about succession planning, however uncomfortable, goes a long way toward a smooth transfer of power. “Transparency between family members within the business and outside the business is key to a successful transition,” he said. “This
way, everyone involved knows the business owner’s wishes and any issues can be dealt with while that individual is living. “A bad scenario can arise when a business is transferred to a sibling and the other family members feel slighted. This could cause a rift within the family that the parents would never have wanted.” Hugh Hermanek, partner with Hancock Dana, said even the best-crafted plans often run aground due to the current leadership delaying the inevitable. “As one generMcGregor ation looks to pass along the reins to the next, doing so quickly and without obstacles is rare,” he said. “Families often delay dealing with the topic of having a comprehensive plan for succession, and when they do heighten the priority of this exercise, time may be short to achieve the optimal results for a smooth transition.” Hermanek said time is the ultimate ally when it comes to succession plans. Not only does it give the current ownership a chance
to iron out wrinkles, but it gives everyone ample opportunity to get used to and accept the process. “A longer lead time allows the idea and process of the transition to sink in over a longer period,” he said. “Sudden, life-altering events of an existing owner can force misguided decisions to be made quickly when a plan is not in place. Having both a contingency plan for a sudden change, and a well-mapped succession plan for an ideal transition are essential to ensuring the business lives on under any circumstances.” The generation inheriting the business also has a role to play in any good succesHermanek sion plan. Developing leadership skills and job competencies goes a long way toward earning the confidence of the current ownership, thus making them more comfortable turning over control of the firm. “Leadership is critical to the success of the organization, departments and individual employees,” said Jessica Jones, CRO with Data Axle and president of Association for Continued on page 12.

Plus, with lingering virus concerns no less driven by variants, Harrison noted that some of its regulars have switched to ordering carryout. “We do catering, too, and that has definitely helped us to get through the last year and a half,” she said. leadership. “During the bank holiday, the federal government closed the banks for three days. People couldn’t get to their money. So, my grandpa and great-grandpa began giving people cash to buy groceries.” Andersen is referring to one of the darkest time periods during the Depression, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt shut down the entire U.S. banking system, in an effort to stem bank failures and restore confidence in the financial system. “In order to open up, you had to have a meeting of your depositors,” Andersen said. “They voted to leave their money in the bank, and that was the only way to open up after the bank holiday. Because of that relationship that we had in the community, we were able to open up.” From its roots in Bennington with three employees, the father-son duo and Andersen’s great-grand uncle, the bank now has a “home” branch as well as locations in Omaha, Ashland and Lincoln. In fact, it was the bank’s dramatic growth and expansion into new markets that led to a new name and rebrand that conveyed this expanded footprint. “We also bought an insurance agency,” she said. “We all had different brands. So, it was an effort to bring us under one brand.” The “i3” refers to “I-cubed” and three core values: innovation, integrity and impact. While Andersen noted the presence and impact of family-owned and -operated banks is not rare within the industry: “There aren’t a ton of them that are on the fourth or fifth generation,” she said. Andersen succeeded her father and the son of Founder Harold E. Roe, Jerry E. Roe, as president of the bank in 1994. “I worked with my dad for 25 years,” she said. “My dad was fantastic to work with … He was good about turning things over to me and not judging or second-guessing.” Additionally, Andersen indicated her father valued her experience at large financial institutions outside of Nebraska. “I was able to bring things to the bank that we weren’t able to do before,” she said.

Loyalty and attention to detail boost family business legacy by David Kubicek
Many factors go into the multi-generational success of family businesses, but loyalty and attention to detail are among the most crucial reasons for a firm’s longevity. Omaha Promos, LLC, is a fourth-generation family-owned business, according to President and CEO Denise K. Baker. The firm, started in 1923 by Baker’s Dutch immigrant great grandfather, is still family-owned and is a registered woman-owned business. The firm helps businesses and organizations increase Baker their brand awareness through promotional products, branded merchandise, custom apparel, and uniforms. Its core clientele includes universities, hospitals, nationwide security franchises, custom home builders, roofing companies, senior care living centers, and vendors in the hospitality industry. Baker attributes the firm’s success to many things, but three things stand out: loyalty to its family and clients, a willingness to invest in itself, and attention to detail. “When I took over in 2011, I went without a salary the first few years so I could reinvest in my company,” Baker said. “We embarked on a wholesale rebranding, and we’re currently on our second new corporate website [which is] now mobile friendly. We know our industry. We listen to our clients and prospects. We set a high bar for ourselves relative to innovation and the quality of our goods and services, and that attention to detail pays dividends with word-of-mouth advertising and repeat business on behalf of a majority of our customers. Ultimately, family-owned businesses rise or fall on their willingness to chase those ideals.” Omaha Compound Co. was founded in 1924 by David Manvitz, who started out manufacturing and selling sweeping compound. Soon other cleaning products were manufactured in house, some of them still in use today.
Although the firm manufactures and sells some of its products, it primarily is a distributor of janitorial, sanitary and paper products. It has a has a line of 3,000 items that it sells to restaurants, offices, schools, cleaning companies and other customers from its 55,000-square-foot warehouse. It’s easier for your car to be hacked than you might think: How to protect yourself by Jamie L. LaReau
Modern cars are computers on wheels, meaning hostile hackers can violate your car’s software and do what they want to it a lot easier than you might think. Moshe Shlisel knows exactly how someone can hack your car. Auto Fortunately, he’s one of the good guys. His company specializes in cybersecurity. His team looks for vulnerabilities in cars to pinpoint the risks and then help to guard against them. In his experience, nearly all modern cars on the road today are extremely vulnerable to being hacked. And, it is happening in the real world, though it gets minimal attention and society is largely naïve about how many car hacks and other industrial hacks have occurred, Shlisel said. In 2019, for example, the U.S. Army’s Stryker armored vehicles were hacked, compromising some of their systems, according to reports in The Drive and ArmyTimes. In June of last year, Forbes reported that nearly every car manufacturer has been hacked and there has been a general increase in attacks over the years. Forbes cited Upstream’s latest Global Security report writing, “There was a 99% increase in cybersecurity incidents (150) in 2019 with a year-over-year 94% increase since 2016. Insurers are just awakening to the seriousness of the threat, and some are wondering if auto cybersecurity is a national defense issue.” “The more sophisticated the system is, the more connected your vehicle is, the more exposed you are,” said Shlisel, CEO and cofounder of GuardKnox Cyber Technologies Ltd. in Israel with subsidiaries in Detroit and Germany. “We have taken whatever model (car) you think of and we hack them through various places. I can control your steering, I can shut down and (start) your engine, control your brakes, your doors, your wipers, open and close your trunk.” Those are only a fraction of the vehicle
Develop leadership
Continued from page 10. Talent Development of Nebraska. “Leaders are responsible for building a strong culture, a place where recruits want to come work because of reputation and employees stay because of the culture. “If strong leadership is in place, people feel valued and see transparency within the organization, which are important factors for employees correlating to job satisfaction.” Very often, Jones said, formal leadership development is lacking from an organization, which erodes ownership’s confidence in the next generation to assume management successfully. Building leaders where they are, therefore, is essential. “One of the biggest mistakes companies make when developing leaders is not developing them at all,” she said. “People are often promoted because they were good at doing the job and they are now leading a team. Companies fail to recognize that leading takes a different skill set and time needs to be invested to allow these people to have proper tools and resources to coach, develop and manage.”
safety risks. Cybersecurity experts say professional hackers can gain control of a vehicle’s systems or access a driver’s personal data in most modern cars pretty easily, even if they’re sitting on the other side of the world. All they need to do is find the unique Internet Protocol (IP) address for your car. It presents automakers with a never-ending task of keeping up with advancing technology to stay a step ahead of the bad guys. And there are steps being taken. “It’s a cat-and-mouse game, you have to be on the ball all the time to stay ahead, otherwise if you don’t move forward, you get hacked,” said Michael Dick, CEO of C2A Security, which is based in Israel and works with automakers on cybersecurity solutions. Hiring hackers In the past 15 years, car makers have increasingly added software to vehicles. Today, there are 100 million lines of coding in a vehicle, more than in a jet, a laptop or a mobile phone, Dick said. Some of that software is written by automakers and some by suppliers, which further complicates the process of securing it against malevolent forces, he said. “If you ask a manufacturer what kind of software is in a vehicle, they wouldn’t be able to tell you. In part, that’s due to a complicated supply chain in automotive,” Dick said. C2A Security has found there are constant attacks on car systems such as infotainment and connectivity, perhaps even safety critical systems that are not published since they are typically performed on a single car and remains between the hacker and the car manufacturer. Dick expects that at some point there could be ransomware attacks on cars. That’s where a driver will try to start the vehicle and will get a message that says, “ ‘To start your vehicle, you’ll need to pay 500 bitcoins.’ There’s no way around it. You’ll have to get it towed and get all new software to start it,” he said. It has already become popular to steal credit card or personal information, which is available in the vehicle’s infotainment system, Dick said. “Those are two low-end examples,” Dick said. “I know for sure it’s happened … in cybersecurity laboratories, they have been able to hack cars and then they publish it and tell the car manufacturer they’re doing it to show how good they are. That’s happened several times over the year.” Late last year, ethical hackers put software in a drone and flew it over a Tesla and opened the doors to the car, Forbes reported. “Theoretically you could steal a car,” Dick said. “When these hacks are published, it means they told Tesla and Tesla fixed it,” Dick said. “But they were able to do it.” It’s been shown, too, he said, that a hacker could theoretically take control of a vehicle or many vehicles at once, posing a threat to lives and infrastructure. “Imagine you have this attack where you take the most busy highway at 9 a.m. and malicious software has been put into thousands of vehicles and everybody loses their brakes or turns left,” Dick said. “You would have thousands potentially killed
and it would compromise the highway system.” Hackers alert Detroit’s 3 One of the most well-known vehicle hackings came in 2015 when ethical hackers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek ran a semi-controlled experiment and managed to remotely take over the controls of a Jeep Cherokee, activating windshield wipers, blasting the radio and turning off the engine in the middle of a highway, ultimately landing it in a ditch, according to a report from Wired. The two got the attention of General Motors. In 2017, GM’s self-driving subsidiary in San Francisco, Cruise, hired Miller and Valasek. A year later, GM launched Bug Bounty. GM brought 10 hand-picked “white-hat” hackers — tech lingo for an ethical hacker or security expert — to Detroit. GM paid them a bounty or cash payment for each “bug” they uncovered in any of GM vehicles’ computer systems. GM ended its private Bug Bounty program in 2019, but does have an active bug bounty program through its HackerOne Vulnerability Disclosure Program. HackerOne is a forum for ethical cybersecurity researchers to report to companies various security weak points. Fiat Chrysler, now called Stellantis, has had a similar program in place since 2016. According to Bugcrowd, a report provided to the Free Press by a Stellantis spokeswoman, the automaker has awarded 542 benevolent hackers for finding vulnerabilities over the years. It pays them $150 to $7,500 for each vulnerability discovered. In the last three months, the average payout per vulnerability was $422.98, Bugcrowd said. Earlier this year, ethical hackers alerted Ford Motor Co. that its internal system filled with sensitive proprietary information was not secure against hostile forces. Ford said it believed it thwarted a security breach. ‘Must remain vigilant’ In 2016, GM started its Vulnerability Disclosure Program on HackerOne. Since that time, researchers have reported to GM more than 2,000 vulnerable areas, which GM has fixed and, “over 500 hackers have been thanked for their support, so we value that relationship,” said Al Adams, GM’s chief product officer. Adams heads a product cybersecurity team of about 90 engineers and internal hackers globally. GM has also hired eight to 10 third-party cybersecurity companies to find weak spots in GM’s cars. GM practices a “defense in depth” strategy, Adams said. “It’s a security strategy in which we design security controls that overlap each other,” Adams said. “So a vulnerability that exists, that exposes a security control, it has a backup to protect against that. It’s layers that overlap each other and protect each other.” GM’s Vehicle Intelligence Platform (VIP), launched in 2019 on the Cadillac CT5, CT4 sedans and Corvette Stingray, is an example of GM’s evolving cybersecurity, he said. The software in VIP is authenticated. That means if a hacker tried to put other software on the car’s system to say, take
over steering or lock the ignition, VIP would block the foreign software because the system would know it is not authentic or authorized. Also, VIP has enhanced over-the-air update capability to further protect the car’s software. Adams said by 2023, VIP will be on the majority of GM’s models. “If you consider the security controls we have in place now and the enhancements in VIP, we’re in a good position against the known attack today,” Adams said. “But we must remain vigilant and ensure that in the future we monitor the evolution of the attack and have an evolution of our controls in parallel.” Drive a ‘60s car Dick said, “If you want to be safe, you have to drive in a 1960s car.” That’s a bit extreme, but Adams and Shlisel offer some other tips to car owners to protect against a cyber hack beyond what automakers are doing with cybersecurity. —Consumers should demand that regulators make carmakers pass the same kind of scrutiny for cybersecurity as they must for safety ratings, Shlisel said. —Do not connect devices through Bluetooth to your car, unless the device providers can assure you the device is protected, Shlisel said. —Keep your mobile phone updated with the latest security controls available, Adams said. —Create and use strong passwords for your OnStar account or the WiFi in the vehicle, Adams said. —Do not insert untrusted devices in the USB port. If you find a USB drive on the ground, don’t plug that in to find out what’s on it, Adams said. “There’s a lot of talk about cybersecurity these days because there’s a realization that the current situation is not good, it’s a dangerous situation,” Dick said. “There are lidar, radar and cameras and the more systems the car has, the more vulnerable the car is and it’s progressing in leaps and bounds.” ©2021 www.freep.com. Record 2020 wind installations represented 42% of new power by Ari Natter
The U.S. installed a record amount of wind-generating capacity last year, adding nearly 17,000 megawatts of power on land, according to an Energy Department report being released Monday. Energy Wind energy’s share of total utility-scale generating capacity in the U.S. was only 11% in 2020, behind natural gas at 43% and nuclear and coal which both represented about 20%.
But wind is gaining: It accounted for 42% of all new capacity in 2020, which represented $24.6 billion in new wind power projects, according to the Energy Department study, which was conducted by the department’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Solar was second, accounting for 38% of new capacity, followed by natural gas at about 20%. Overall, renewable energy comprised 80% of new capacity added last year. Utility scale measures energy that can LEAVES AND SHEDS
be fed into a power grid. “These reports contain such terrific news: the U.S. installed a record-breaking amount of land-based wind energy last year,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in a statement. “They underscore both the progress made and the capacity for much more affordable wind power to come.” President Joe Biden’s administration has laid out ambitious plans to increase renewable-energy use, and vowed to achieve 100% clean energy by 2035 to curb planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. Part of those plans is a goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030. The Interior Department announced Monday it was proceeding with an environmental review of a proposed 122-turbine project in federal waters off the coast of Montauk, New York, a key bureaucratic hurdle for the project. “The Interior Department is committed to confronting climate change, creating
thousands of good-paying jobs, and paving the way for the nation’s transition to a cleaner energy future,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said. “Offshore wind is a critical component of that ambitious agenda.” The Land-Based Wind Market Report also found that wind energy provided more than 10% of total in-state electricity generation in 16 states, including 57% of Iowa’s and more than 30% in Kansas, Oklahoma, and North and South Dakota. New utility-scale, land-based wind turbines were installed in 25 states in 2020, including Texas which installed the most capacity, with 4,137 megawatts, the report said. According to the Energy Department, wind industry employment expanded by 1.8% in 2020, making it one of the few areas that saw job growth amid declines because of the coronavirus pandemic. ©2021 Bloomberg L.P. Survey: 55% of Americans expect to search for a new job over the next 12 months by Sarah Foster
Answers on page 14.
The coronavirus pandemic massively disrupted Americans’ working lives, and a new Bankrate survey suggests that it’s causing many of them to now re-evaluate what they want out of their careers. Most Americans (55 percent) who are either employed or looking Jobs for a job — what economists would describe as being in the workforce — say they are likely to look for new employment in the next 12 months, according to Bankrate’s August 2021 Job Seeker Survey. Even more surprising, some 28 percent of working Americans who currently say they’re not looking for a new job are still expecting to search for a different position at some point in the next year. “After spending the last year or more stuck in their homes, a good number of American workers now expect to be on the move, searching for new employment,” says Mark Hamrick, Bankrate senior economic analyst and Washington bureau chief. “Pandemic-inspired changes, including the ability to work remotely and/ or from home, have transformed mindsets and expectations for many workers.” Key takeaways: —More than half (55 percent) of Americans in the workforce say they’re either somewhat or very likely to look for a new job in the next year. —Americans are prioritizing flexible work arrangements (56 percent), higher pay (53 percent) and job security (47 percent) in their careers in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. —More than two-fifths (41 percent) of Americans in the labor market expect to work remotely at least one day a week over the next year. —More than 1 in 5 (or 21 percent) of U.S. adults lost income or became unemployed during the pandemic. The great American work search Among the more than half (55 percent) of Americans who say they’re going to be
looking for a new job, those were predominantly younger Americans, lower-wage workers and minorities — the groups who endured some of the harshest impacts from the coronavirus pandemic. Nearly twice as many Generation Z (those between the ages of 18-24) and millennial (25-40) workers than baby boomers say they planned to look for a new position at some point over the next year (77 percent and 63 percent versus 33 percent, respectively), the poll found. At the same time, more than 2 in 5 (or 45 percent) of Gen Xers say they’re going to hunt for new employment. When it comes to income levels, about 72 percent of those who earn under $30,000 per year are planning to look for a new job, compared with 44 percent of those who make $80,000 and more annually. Meanwhile, nearly 7 in 10 Black and Hispanic Americans (or 67 percent each) plan to hunt for a new position, compared with 47 percent of Whites. That comes at a time when the number of Americans voluntarily quitting their jobs is near an all-time high for a third straight month, suggesting Americans are feeling more confidence in their career prospects following the worst unemployment crisis in a lifetime. All of that points to continued challenges for employers in the months ahead, as they attempt to not only lure workers back to a job but also retain them. Yet, 46 percent of those surveyed are not expecting to search for a new job in the next year, according to Bankrate’s survey. That includes 20 percent who indicated that they weren’t too likely and another 26 percent who mentioned they were not at all likely. Those tended to be individuals already employed and currently saying they’re looking for a job, with nearly three-quarters (or 72 percent) of that group mentioning they were at least not too likely to search for a new position in the Continued on next page.

Survey: 55% of Americans expect to search for a new job over the next 12 months Continued from preceding page. next year. Complaints of labor shortages have been heating up for months, with the roughly 10.1 million job openings now outnumbering the 8.7 million unemployed individuals, according to the latest data from the Department of Labor. Lawmakers point to child care restraints and virus-related fears as keeping workers on the sidelines, while others say enhanced pandemic-era unemployment benefits are deterring others from seeking a job. About 20 percent of those in Bankrate’s poll indicated that they’re currently unemployed, half of which (10 percent) indicated they’re not currently looking for a new job. Job seekers are looking for work flexibility, higher pay Americans are thinking more carefully about what they want out of their careers because of the pandemic, with the experience elevating the remote work and flexibility issue among workers, Bankrate’s survey suggests. What are Americans who are currently in the workforce looking for in their jobs? Predominantly work flexibility, with 56 percent indicating that they’d prefer remote work or adjustable working hours. That slightly outnumbers those who say they’d want higher pay (53 percent). Job security was listed as Americans’ third most important concern, with 47 percent of respondents indicating that would be a top priority. More than a third (or 35 percent) preferred time off, while a quarter (or 24 percent) listed a more inclusive work culture as their top priority. Even among the lowest-paid Americans (those making under $30,000), individuals were more likely to list flexible work arrangements as their top concern, at 52 percent, the highest of any other category. The tendency was also higher for those with higher incomes (61 percent of those in households earning $80,000 per year or more), as well as women (60 percent vs. 53 percent of men) and those with more education (67 percent of those with a four-year degree or more versus 51 percent of those with a two-year degree or less). Flexible work arrangements were the top priority for Gen Zers (62 percent) and millennials (60 percent), compared
with 47 percent of baby boomers. More than half (52 percent) of that generation selected higher pay, the top-rated priority, according to the poll. Meanwhile, Gen Xers were split between seeing flexible work arrangements (54 percent) and higher pay (54 percent) as their top priority. “With a majority of those in the labor force eager for higher pay, as seen in our survey, a not-yet-answerable question is whether wage growth will be a significant contributor to higher sustained inflation,” Hamrick says. “This is being closely monitored by the Federal Reserve as it ponders future adjustments to monetary policy including the prospect of higher interest rates down the road.” Americans expect to continue working remotely Americans might not have to look too hard to find the flexible arrangements they’re seeking, with remote work evidently here to stay beyond the pandemic. About 41 percent of Americans who are currently working or looking for work expect to work remotely or from home one day a week or more in the next 12 months, Bankrate’s poll found. About 19 percent expect to work remotely full time, while another 13 percent say they’ll do so three to four days a week. Another 9 percent say they expect one to two days of remote work a week. Another 4 percent mentioned that they’d work from home less than one day a week. At the same time, one quarter (or 24 percent) said they’re not expecting to work remotely at all, while a little more than 1 in 5 (22 percent) said their work could not be done remotely. Among the Americans in the labor market who say they can work from home, 60 percent say they’d expect to work remotely or from home at least one day a week, with more than a quarter (28 percent) saying they’d work remotely full time. More than 1 in 3 (or 35 percent) said they weren’t likely to work from home at all, most common among those with less formal education and older workers. More than 2 in 5 (or 43 percent) of Gen Xers and 44 percent of baby boomers say they do not expect to work remotely, compared with a quarter (or 25 percent) of Gen Z and 29 percent of millennials. The luxury of being able to work remotely tended to be exclusively afforded to higher-wage Americans, with 28 percent of all surveyed U.S. adults earning under $40,000 mentioning they did not have the ability to perform their tasks remotely compared with 17 percent of those earning $80,000 or more annually, Bankrate’s poll found. “Strong growth in the U.S. and the likelihood of further declines in the unemployment rate should translate to better wages and job security in the months ahead,” Hamrick said. “With that, many workers are demanding more flexibility in their employment, to which a dollar sign cannot be assigned.” Americans experience significant financial events during the pandemic Even so, the effects of the pandemic are bound to linger financially on Americans. About 1 in 5 (21 percent) of U.S. adults say either they or someone in their
household was unemployed or lost income since the pandemic began. Another 15 percent said either they or a member of their household got unemployment compensation during this time. At the same time, 4 percent said someone in the household left the workforce to care for a child or family member. Americans, however, still got good news during the pandemic. Nearly 12 percent got a bump in income, and 11 percent cited taking a new job. About 9 percent said either they or a member of their household took on a side hustle or a second job, while 6 percent of respondents said they worked from home somewhere other than their home for an extended period. Those earning $80,000 or more per year were more than twice as likely as those earning under $40,000 annually to get a new job during the pandemic (16 percent and 7 percent, respectively). Members of Gen Z and millennials are among those most likely to say they received an increase in pay at 17 and 18 percent, respectively, compared with 12 percent of Gen Xers and 5 percent of boomers. These generations, however, were also slightly more likely to have been unemployed during the pandemic. What this means for you Even with the economy rebounding, the coronavirus crisis is still a downside risk to the labor market, and the rapidly spreading Delta variant could pose new challenges for businesses. When it comes to finding a new job during the coronavirus pandemic, experts recommend:
—Leveraging your network and making new connections: Companies don’t always advertise what they have open. Reach out to contacts who you’ve previously known at a professional level or leverage online job-search sites to meet new people in your industry. —Increase your skill sets: An area of expertise or specialty can help bolster your application, so that you stand out for your next opportunity. —Be persistent, and apply often: Don’t limit your opportunities by giving up. In the meantime, you can’t go wrong with shoring up your finances by cutting back on your expenses, ramping up your emergency fund and working with any financial firms that you regularly pay a bill to on negotiating a forbearance plan if your wallet is still in tough shape. Methodology Bankrate.com commissioned YouGov Plc to conduct the survey. All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2,452 adults among whom 1,340 were employed or seeking employment. Fieldwork was undertaken from July 28, 2021 – July 30, 2021. The survey was carried out online and meets rigorous quality standards. It employed a non-probability-based sample using both quotas upfront during collection and then a weighting scheme on the back end designed and proven to provide nationally representative results. ©2021 Bankrate.com. Topics will include the case for inclusive excellence in personal life and work, understanding self and others, as well as other topics. A new grant-funded clinic at Creighton University will help fill a vital need in the community. The study aims to take a broad look at the epidemiology of post-acute COVID to determine what percentage of people exhibited symptoms, including neurologic or pulmonary issues, after a clinical case of COVID-19. The study will review the course of the disease in several hundred patients beginning two weeks after hospitalization or acute illness. Immanuel, a retirement and senior care service provider, will require the COVID-19 vaccine as a condition of employment starting Nov. 1. The recent surge in COVID-19 cases from the Delta variant created a renewed sense of urgency for the requirement. Even with 80% of employees currently vaccinated, there is great concern that even more hazardous variants could develop if more people don’t get vaccinated. Employees may apply for an exemption based on medical conditions or sincerely held religious beliefs. Otherwise, employees will be asked show verification of a first dose by Oct. 1 and be fully vaccinated by Nov. 1 to comply with the policy. Dr. Christopher Murray of Murray Natural Health & Chiropractic, LLC in Hastings was appointed president of the board of directors of the Nebraska Chiropractic Physicians Association. In addition, Dr. Troy Brainard has been honored as the Ritch E. Miller Chiropractor of the Year by his peers for his leadership and contributions during his term as president.

Cybersecurity a key focus for remote working by Jasmine Heimgartner
Providing employees equipment is one solution to ensure that they have what they need while ensuring the business controls what software is installed and that it is monitored by security systems. If remote workers are only using remote desk protocol, they run a higher risk of an attacker taking over that session or hacking into that system. It is much better to have VPN or use a VPN service.” “Remote working Mainquist can be done securely by ensuring a secure connection and multifactor authentication are implemented,” Mainquist said. “It’s better to use Citrix or some other service than to allow Remote Desktop into the environment, which could create an avenue for fraudsters to get in. Citrix also helps to reduce the likelihood that
Every year there are tens of thousands of ransom attacks. While people often only hear about the big ones, smaller companies aren’t immune from being hacked. With remote working becoming a trend that won’t likely be fading into the background, a continued diligent focus on cybersecurity is a must. Communicating protocols and training are essential whether on- or off-site. “I sometimes hear businesses saying they don’t have any responsibility because their network administrator takes care of all that for them,” said Denise Mainquist, ITPAC founder and managing director. “When this occurs, I am concerned that employees won't recognize an incident and won’t report it or take quick steps to prevent the incident from having a bigger impact. Security/cybersecurity training at least annually, preferably more often, is a basic requirement that makes a huge difference. Email phishing testing helps to verify that employees are paying attention and recognize fraudulent emails.” Phishing emails continue to be one of the biggest security risks. With remote working, that risk may be increased. “The biggest thing you can do is train people to spot issues and secure their stations,” said Bob Kardell, Baird Holm attorney. “When you are at home with a family computer, it may be the only one in the household, so you may be sharing. Train employees to keep separate logins and how to spot malicious websites and phishing attempts. Remote workers also may not have the technological coverage, such as security software for home equipment.”
employees will remote sensitive data from the network by saving it on their personally owned PC or laptop.” Along with workstations, mobile devices need to be factored into cybersecurity training. People with access to data, work emails and other information via a smartphone or tablet means that data is traveling wherever the employee goes. Monitoring software is available to help ensure data Kardell is secure, as well as remote wiping services. Regardless of what device was the culprit, a breach is serious business no matter the size of the business. “A big misconception is that small businesses aren’t targets of attackers,” Kardell said. “Attackers don’t know what you have
until they get in there. To them, you are just another IP address. They just assume that every company has important data and can afford to pay some ransom. On the flipside, smaller businesses are often the most vulnerable because they may not have the IT staff or the best or more robust infrastructure.” That misconception could easily lead a business going under. The latest estimates indicate that the average ransom demand is $1.2 million. There are other costs associated with a breach that are often forgotten until a ransom happens. “Businesses don’t think about the costs that occur when they have to notify all the individuals whose information was compromised,” Kardell said. “If you discover your customer list and any info was taken and was personally identifiable information, you have to notify them of the breach. The notification can get very expensive, as well as figuring out how someone reached your network. If you are a single member LLC in the health field, it may not include social security numbers, but it may include protected health care information. If they lose their email, that can bankrupt a company.”
Banks, financial professionals rebounding after COVID-19 pivot by Dwain Hebda
Banks and financial planners in Lincoln are rebounding from conditions in 2020 that challenged their ability to communicate with clients and deliver services. “We have experienced growth both in our home office and our national footprint,” said Jack Connealy, president of JFC Financial Services. “We support financial advisers in 22 states and added over 100 new financial advisers to our enterprise over the last year.”

Connealy said having to shift operations to virtual platforms such as Zoom last year, while initially an adjustment, has quickly become an operational advantage. “One operational positive to come
Connealy Foy out of the pandemic was that clients who previously would have been hesitant to adopt new technology such as DocuSign were more than happy to learn these systems, which allowed them to conduct business remotely,” he said. “Using these systems improves office efficiency and is often more convenient for the client. The move to remote work, brought about by the pandemic, demonstrated that our ability to provide service and support is not restricted by geographical or office location. Thus, we expect to see that growth continue indefinitely.” Edward Foy, president and chief investment officer for Foy Financial Services, said his firm also enjoyed brisk business in 2020 by leveraging a variety of communication tactics, many of which were in place before the pandemic. “Foy Financial Services, Inc. has always communicated with our clients on several different levels, including personal visits,” he said. “We provide monthly commentaries and quarterly reports, of course, and have always been available via telephone, email, texts, and Zoom.” Foy said several positives have arisen out of the situation, which kept the company busy and running smoothly last year. “There actually were a few positives,” he said. “Our clients spent far less time shopping in person and traveling and as a result, became better savers. From an oper-
ational standpoint, Foy Financial Services, Inc., went to 100% remote operations from March of 2020 to June of 2021, so remote operations skills were developed and polished. As a result, we were very busy throughout 2020.” Chris Hove, president and CEO of Nebraska Bank of Commerce and past Nebraska Bankers Association chairman, said the rebound of banks in the new year has come from a variety of sectors. Hove “Last year, we really focused on the PPP loans and helping customers with changing terms of loans to assist them, going interest-only for a short period of time to allow them to get through the cash flow crunch,” he said. “This year, of course, we’re back to business as usual. We’re starting to see that activity is really picking up. “Everybody has seen huge housing demand and how active housing construction and home purchasing is. That’s been a big piece of our business this year. Commercial businesses are also starting to realize things are pretty good, now that they’ve come through a tough time. Now it’s time to expand or to grow, whether that be with new equipment or with a new facility, a new piece of real estate.” Hove said state legislation regarding cryptocurrency, supported by the NBA, is leading the state into new financial territory. “Senator Mike Flood from Norfolk introduced a bill to pursue a cryptocurrency type of bank,” he said. “We think we have something we can live with that allows cryptocurrency banks to operate. We all realize this is something that is coming out and we have to work with it, and we have to figure out how we can adapt. Cryptocurrency could be something that would change the dynamics of banking, but it should have the same rules commercial banks have to follow.”
