COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE CELEBRATES 100

As it marks 100 years, the Omaha Community Playhouse (OCP) is the largest community theater in America, nationally known, and a mainstay of the local arts scene. A century ago, however, it was merely a fledgling entity. The Little Theatre movement of the early 1900s had been an inspiration to the group who founded what would eventually give rise to OCP, said Co-Artistic Director Susan Baer Collins, and “little” was certainly the right word to describe their endeavor in 1924.

“It was a small group of people, and I don’t even know if they called it a ‘board’ at the time … They were kind of nomads,” she said. “They first started performing in a place called the Cooper Dance Studio, which was somewhere around the [current] Blackstone District, then a couple of years performing at what was Tech High School at the time, then some other places. [In 1928] they built a temporary structure at 40th and Davenport. They intended it to be temporary, but stayed there for quite some time, I think more than 30 years later.”

The early performances were solid even if the group’s financial footing was shaky. The first plays that took place in the spring of 1925 included “The Enchanted Cottage” starring Dodie Brando, whose 1-year-old son Marlon would later become a Hollywood legend. Jayne Fonda was also in the cast. Her brother Henry Fonda would appear in the 1925-26 season, and along with his progeny — Peter, Jane and Bridget — later made the Fonda name famous on the silver screen. Other big names associated with the early days of the playhouse were Academy Award nominee Dorothy McGuire, who debuted onstage as a teen; Iowa artist Grant Wood, best known for his painting

American Gothic, who was tapped for scenery design; and Letitia Baldrige, who acted at the Playhouse but later became Jacqueline Kennedy’s White House Social Secretary as well as an etiquette expert and author.

Entertainment and purpose

Joslyn Museum architect Alan McDonald, who served as the first president of the playhouse, helped define the original purpose of Omaha’s community playhouse “to raise the drama from a purely amusement enterprise into an educational, cultural force.” It’s evocative of OCP’s mission today, “to enhance quality of life through live theatre, professional touring, and arts education.”

“That’s what theater does. Theater educates and enlightens,” Executive Director Rebecca “Becky” Noble said. “Theater is kind of a window to our society and to events that have happened in our society.”

Co-Artistic Director Alex Rodriguez said the role of community theater continues to be larger than mere entertainment.

“I believe that a community theater of our size has to serve the community by providing or being a creative home for all of our artists, and also our patrons,” he said. “Community theaters throughout history have offered artists of all levels of experience an opportunity to practice their art and tell the stories that that they really want to tell … Theater, in a community like this, is here to really provide our audiences with great stories that represent the full tapestry of our community, introduce them to new ideas, post important questions, and ultimately ignite conversation and reflection, catharsis and change.”

Housing the Playhouse

In 1959, OCP moved to its current location at 69th and Cass streets, which fostered growth after recovery following a period of economic uncertainty that had included the Great Depression and World War II. In 1976, OCP’s touring arm, The Nebraska Theatre Caravan, was founded. Baer Collins became a member of the group in 1979. She later served for 27 years as associate artistic director.

“I have this really kind of bizarre legacy,” she said. “I was a member of that company and then came back as a full-time staff member in 1987. And I’ve been here off and on since that time.”

The Playhouse experienced tremendous growth throughout the 1980s and 1990s under the direction of Charles Jones, Baer Collins recalled. Unfortunately, he arrived in 1974 to see both a crippling blizzard and major tornado the following year. The tornado damaged the facility, but as it had in the face of past challenges, OCP persevered — and grew.

“Now, we have two theaters,” Baer Collins said. “In 1985, there was a huge renovation to the 1959 theater, and we added a rehearsal hall to accommodate shows that were being rehearsed for the [Howard and Rhonda Hawks] Mainstage Theatre; and we added a big dance studio in the basement. And we added the [Howard] Drew Theatre, our 200-seat studio theater, so now we have a 558-seat mainstage theater and, since the mid-’80s, we have this alternative theater. There always was kind of a studio theater part of the Playhouse, but it was in a found space in the basement of the building; now we have a more ‘legit’ theater.”

Survival and change

The organization has also evolved financially over time, Baer Collins said, now receiving tremendous community support.

“When the Playhouse started, they existed only on their sale of tickets. And there were some members of the board that felt like we can’t go asking for money, that it was inappropriate,” she said. “And, of course, times have changed. The Playhouse wouldn’t be what it is now without so many grants and donated funds.”

More recently, the organization has been working on providing more substantial compensation to its artists.

“Only within the last five years or so, we pay a stipend to our actors. That doesn’t really change our situation. We are a community-based theater; basically, the people that do shows and participate backstage are volunteers,” Baer Collins explained. “But as volunteers, they now receive a stipend, which is a certain amount of money that we hope might make it possible for that individual who would love to do a show at the Playhouse, but doesn’t want to lose money in the effort — because maybe they require childcare, or transportations an issue for them, or they have to maybe have some additional money to just make it happen.”

It’s part of an overall effort to make OCP more accessible in a larger sense of the word, which includes such efforts as expanding education and outreach programs, continuing to price tickets affordably, representing greater diversity in plays and performers, and even considering how to make the facility itself more

sensory-friendly or navigable for individuals with mobility impairment.

“We have to step forward in ways that show our community that — like any arts organization, there has been missteps and there’s always room for improvement — we are committed to that work,” Rodriguez said. “We want to be better for everybody in our community. We invite them to join us and help us get to that next level. I believe that will always be our ongoing challenge … How do we invite people into the theater and how do we bring them along for the ride to help us become a stronger arts organization for everybody?”

OMAHA COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE CELEBRATES 100 YEARS

In order to put on a piece of theater, you require participation from a lot of individuals.

Teamwork

In the last few decades, OCP has survived periods of relative upheaval related to changes in leadership and staffing, said Rodriguez, who joined the organization about a year and a half ago.

“I am proud of how we navigated those times. I am proud of the work we’re doing right now. And I’m incredibly inspired about the work that’s left to be done,” he said. “Any time your leadership team has a fast turnover, that certainly has impacts your staff and impacts your community.”

The OCP team has emerged stronger than ever, Noble said.

“I’m having a great time. It is a wonderful place. The people who work here are so fabulous,” Noble said. “We have a pretty amazing staff. They will all do anything to help if you need something … They believe in the whole group, the value of working together and playing in the same sandbox.”

In addition to OCP’s team of approximately 35 employees are the dozens of actors, creative leaders, and crew who contribute to any given performance,

A PERFORMANCE OF “LES MISÉRABLES” DURING THE 2013-2014 SEASON.

Noble added, praising the work of many individual and important roles.

“In order to put on a piece of theater, you require participation from a lot of individuals,” Baer Collins explained. “So, you have a director, you have a stage manager. If it’s a musical, you have a music director, you have a choreographer, you have a composer.

“Any show, you’d have a lighting director, a sound designer, costume designer, props people. And then to make the show happen every day or every night or every matinee, you need this team of people that are committed to running the show, to helping with quick changes or costuming to running the lightboard, or maybe running the spotlights for a big musical. That hasn’t changed.”

And neither has the value of live theater, she added.

“The ultimate goal of having a number of people come into a space, lowering the lights, and letting you all be witnesses to the same thing happening lies in front of you at the same time. As witnesses, there’s something communal about that experience of seeing a play or a musical,” she said.

“We have such a focus on social media and there’s technology on our phones that consumes so much of our time and affects our attention span, and there’s streaming, which has really changed the way we consume stories,” Rodriguez said. “I think theater has this incredible opportunity to bring people together into a theater where they have to turn off their cell phones and have a community with other audience members in experiencing a story together that will always be different night after night. Because even though you’re doing the same show, the audience is different, and the energy is different, and you’re always going to experience your own unique telling of that story.”

Another century ahead

Ticket sales certainly help sustain the theater, but patrons and volunteers are also vital to ensure its future, Noble said.

“One of our challenges as we look ahead to the next 100 years is, how do we ensure that we stay vital in the Omaha community, and ensure that we raise what we need to raise to support the theater — and that, in turn, we’re providing to the community a great service?” Noble said, adding that she’s confident the support will come through. “One of the things that we have to look at is how resilient we are. There have been so many challenges and so many successes in 100 years, and we’ve weathered them.”

OCP’s 100th season will launch September 13, leading with a diverse mix of performances: the musical “Jersey Boys,” the provocative drama “Angels in America,” comedy from The Weisenheimers, and the seasonal OCP classic “A Christmas Carol.”

“The 100th season is a season of celebration,” Rodriguez said. “It’s a season of also reflecting on our path and inviting new people as we move forward to the next 100 years.”

Omaha Arts and Culture DRIVING

JOAN SQUIRES

Over the span of a generation, Omaha has added signature destination attractions and events to its once-limited arts and culture landscape. The city has long leaned into stalwart amenities such as the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha Community Playhouse and small music venues. However, a critical mass of new amenities and activities, along with additions to old standbys, have turned Omaha into a Midwest entertainment mecca whose magnet attractions make a real economic impact.

In recent decades, Omaha has seen the addition of music venues such as The Astro and Steelhouse Omaha, as well as cultural arts centers like the Union for Contemporary Art and Film Streams. Events such as Omaha Fashion Week, MAHA Music Festival, and Omaha Fringe Fest highlight the talent of local artists.

The new venues alone host hundreds of events and programs, benefiting residents and visitors alike.

“Now they have a great variety from which to choose. It just makes a great experience,” said Joan Squires, president of Omaha Performing Arts, which operates Holland Performing Arts Center, Steelhouse Omaha and The Orpheum. All this activity generates spending at adjacent businesses. Studies indicate OPA venues generate a total of $61 million in economic impact.

“When I first came 21 years ago there was no CHI Health Center, no Holland Center, no revitalized riverfront. All this growth has contributed to a sea change. There’s a synergy about it, too. It’s not just OPA. We all work together,” she said.

Public/private partnerships

Roger Dixon, president & CEO of MECA (Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority), which operates CHI Health Center, Charles Schwab Field and The RiverFront, said, “I’ve been in Omaha for 23 years and in this business for 48, and I’ve never seen a community accomplish as much as this one has where the private community invests in public facilities.”

He noted the cultural facilities in Omaha are widely supported by both public and private sectors. This has resulted in billions of dollars in new investments in venues that collectively attract millions of users, who in turn spend hundreds of millions of dollars on tickets, parking, transportation, dining, hotels, and more.

“We believe Omaha now can boast having some of the finest venues and offerings anywhere in the country,” Squires said.

Then there are the jobs these venues create. Where some arts and culture players have struggled, OPA, MECA and local music promoter 1% Productions have grown employee rosters to staff venues.

“There are some jobs that we are paying people for now that didn’t exist when I was coming out of college,” said 1% Productions co-owner Marc Leibowitz, noting positions in booking and marketing.

COMMERCE AND TRANSFORMATION

The impetus

This transformation started humbly enough with the 2001 opening of Lauritzen Gardens. From a modest beginning, it has expanded into a 100-acre site featuring multiple gardens and trails. The next big changes to the Omaha art and culture scene came when MECA built the CHI Health Center (originally the Qwest Center) in 2003 and OPA built the Holland in 2005, giving downtown Omaha two-world class event spaces.

“Twenty years ago, the area where the convention center sits now was a metal scrapyard. There was the Civic Auditorium and five downtown hotels. Today we have a 346,000-square-foot convention center and 18,300-seat arena which, on average, attracts more than $80 million worth of convention center and arena business every year, helping to support 21 downtown hotels,” said Visit Omaha Executive Director Deborah Ward. “Before the convention center and arena was built the largest hotel was the Holiday Inn Convention Center on 72nd and Grover with 383 rooms. Today we have 81 hotels with close to 10,000 rooms. The convention center/arena was a catalyst for development and economic growth in our city, and it transformed Omaha into a convention destination.”

CHI HEALTH CENTER, PREVIOUSLY CENTURYLINK CENTER AND QWEST CENTER OMAHA, OPENED IN 2003.
I’ve never seen a community accomplish as much as this one has where the private community invests in public facilities … I’ve never seen both public and private support like in Omaha. Everybody’s involved. Everybody wants to grow the city.

Renovations to the Orpheum made Omaha a viable home for Broadway touring shows that attract audiences from around the area. The Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium’s dramatic makeover has made it a major regional attraction with 2 million-plus visitors annually. North downtown’s emergence as an arts-culture district got a boost with the opening of Film Streams and Slowdown in 2007.

Omaha’s perennial national sports attraction, the NCAA Men’s College World Series, moved to its new home, Charles Schwab Field in 2011. Seating 25,000, it’s seen record attendance over the past several years.

“We like to say the MCWS is the granddad of Omaha events. It taught Omaha how to be a successful sports town and showed our city knows how to put on a show,” Ward said. “It helped Omaha create some heavyhitting offspring.”

She mentioned other major sporting events such as the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship, the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials, and the U.S. Senior Open that attracted large crowds.

MECA expanded the arena to accommodate record crowds for Creighton University men’s basketball and other premiere events. This past winter the arena drew big crowds to Omaha Supernovas home matches and the first-ever women’s professional volleyball finals. The renovated RiverFront parks drew in excess of 2 million visitors in their first year.

The Kiewit Luminarium has added yet another jewel to the downtown riverfront scene.

In addition to the venues it manages, OPA presents Jazz on the Green at Turner Park in Midtown Crossing, Music in the Parks at Miller Park and Global Sounds Music Festival in South Omaha. OPA’s downtown imprint is now an entire campus with the addition of Steelhouse and the coming Tenaska Community Engagement Center.

Among OPA venues alone, 550-600 events a year attract half a million-plus patrons. The Tenaska Center opening in 2026 will add to those numbers.

In the competitive world of conventions and tourism, there’s no such thing as resting on laurels, thus improvements are constantly being made to venues to keep them patron-friendly and up-to-date.

“All the monies we generate we pour back into the facilities,” Dixon said.

MECA is pushing for a $175 million addition and renovation to the convention center to attract events it is losing due to inadequate meeting room

space. Dixon hopes the expansion and renovation of existing facilities will also attract a new anchor hotel as downtown hotels now regularly fill up during peak times. He said studies indicate CHI misses out on $1.2 billion in business each year due to a lack of meeting and hotel rooms.

Even legacy player Joslyn Art Museum is getting in on the act with a new addition opening this month.

Dixon said it took time for Omaha to be recognized as a destination and all the arts-culture infrastructure that’s been added has firmly established it as one.

He expects the $950 million renovation and modernization of the Eppley Airfield terminal and expansion of flights to be a catalyst for new business.

“Once we get that in place I think you’ll see even more significant growth in convention business because Omaha’s an easy city to do business in as far as conventions and meetings. The airport is five minutes away from our facilities.”

The conventions CHI hosts draw some 235,000 people per year. Arena events draw another 663,000 yearly.

“You’re up to almost 900,000 people that this two-three block area generates,” Dixon said. “Then you throw in Charles Schwab Field and that’s another 400,000 between baseball and concerts.”

Add in crowds that flock to the new RiverFront parks and MECA venues alone draw millions downtown.

Community support

Filling a niche on the live music side of things is 1% Percent Productions, which produces and presents live music shows at four Omaha venues it owns: The Waiting Room, Reverb Lounge, The Admiral and The Astro. Between those venues, Leibowitz said, 1% produces upwards of 600 shows a year that attract some 450,000 paying customers.

“The scene has been very supportive of the shows,” he said.

Taking all these things together, Squires said, Omaha has made itself a much more attractive place for artists, events, visitors and residents.

None of it means much if audiences don’t show up, but as Omaha has built it, they have come.

Squires noted that Omaha’s Broadway touring ticket purchases are among the highest per capita in the nation.

Dixon stated that the Creighton men’s basketball team has sold out attendance at the CHI, ranking in the top 10 nationally, and the area’s concert

ticket sales rank in the top 70. Not only do the CWS, the zoo and the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting draw strongly from outside the area, but so do concerts at CHI, the Holland and Steelhouse.

“We measure who comes to our shows,” Squires said. “Fifty percent are outside Douglas County. About 20% are outside the state. Disney’s The Lion King [was] here for four weeks and a large part of the ticket buyers come from outside the metro. People come to town expressly for these shows, they stay in hotels, eat at restaurants, visit the zoo and Luminarium. They participate in things downtown. These shows are the driver for some tourism business.”

On the arena side of things, the Mid-America Center, Baxter Arena and Ralston Arena have expanded options for sports, concert and community events.

In Omaha’s urban core, more arts and culture growth is expected to follow the coming $440 million Omaha Streetcar line connecting the riverfront to destination hubs downtown, in the Old Market, Midtown Crossing and Blackstone. The latter two revitalized districts have become popular living and leisure spots.

The Benson Business District has seen new life thanks to 1% Productions anchor live music venues The Waiting Room and Reverb Lounge as well as trendy eating spots and, most recently the Benson Theatre. The company has helped rebirth South 13th Street with The Admiral (formerly known as Sokol) and La Vista with The Astro.

“When I was growing up the only places to see shows, at least on the club side, was The Ranch Bowl and The Music Box,” Leibowitz said.

1% Productions saw enough market potential to open The Admiral and The Astro in the last two years.

“We had confidence we were going to do a good job in booking that we would be able to hold our own against national competitors. We’ve done well,” he said. “The Astro is kind of a game-changer with its indoor-outdoor model and the flexibility it provides.”

A comeback

After the pandemic, venues have rebounded with help from federal relief monies.

“The Shuttered Venues Act helped a lot of people in this community, including ourselves,” Leibowitz said. “We were able to survive business-wise. Coming out of it, business struggled for a while but now it’s back.”

OPA and MECA have seen the same recovery trends. Meanwhile, the cost of entertainment got higher.

“Everything’s more expensive now,” Leibowitz said. “It’s a combination of inflation and cost increases. We have a lot of brand-new venues all vying for the same shows. Bands sell to the highest bidder and to cover that higher fee you raise ticket prices. The average ticket price has gone up rather dramatically. So not only is there an increase in choices for people, but all those choices cost more money. We have to figure out if there is a breaking or

saturation point.”

Leibowitz worries Omaha may experience a glut of venues and shows it can’t support.

“We’re seeing what the impact is on people’s arts and culture consumption patterns,” he said. “All these venues are programming content. They all want to get eyes on their shows and to get people to come out. But Omaha’s only so big.”

Only time will tell if Omaha’s over-built venues.

“Do I see us opening another venue anytime soon? No, probably not,” Leibowitz said. “We like what we’ve built. We think there’s still some improvements to be made in what we can provide.”

Squires is bullish on what lies ahead for OPA and Omaha.

“We’ve got more growth ahead for economic impact, which translates into workforce for the downtown,” she said. “I see certainly more growth for Steelhouse. When we add the Tenaska Center to our campus, we’re going to really broaden our education and engagement opportunities for the community and generate a lot more young people and families coming.”

The message Squires wants the community to hear is that arts and culture not only enhance the experience of the city but its commerce and economy, too.

“I think that gets missed as we try to bring in new people to the city or keep our young people,” she said. “We look at housing, health care, transportation and education – all these important items. But the other piece of it is what is there to do. Well now there’s more to do than ever and all of us presenters contribute to those experiences for everybody in this community.”

Tippl EMBRACING FEEDBACK

Evolve and adapt; Two words that can be used to describe tech startup Tippl. In just under four years the company has reconfigured its revenue stream, placing less burden on customers while ensuring consistent exposure for local businesses in the restaurant and bar scene.

Driven by community

Founded in early 2022 just as pandemic restrictions were starting to relax, Tippl sought to encourage the community to go out and support local restaurants and bars. For $5 a month, members could receive a free drink every day at one of Tippl’s affiliated restaurants or bars.

“Now we’re seeing the same struggles that restaurants and bars had prior to COVID,” said co-founder Mark Wong. “During COVID a lot of people felt like they needed to do something to support these bars and restaurants … they went out of their way to support businesses. Now, it seems like consumers are letting off the gas.”

Feedback regarding the membership price is consistent with that trend. In 2024, just weeks before Wong was scheduled to present at the

Midlands African Chamber’s Pitch Black event, it launched the platform’s monetization reconfiguration.

“We listened to our consumers and the market and ended up making the app free,” Wong said. “We added an advertising module to the platform that’s essentially absorbing the cost.”

Wong believes the pivot, which is part of a multi-step plan, helped the startup secure $10,000 in funding from Pitch Black. Tippl won 2nd Place and the Investor’s Pick Award.

Since rolling out the update in mid-June Tippl has seen downloads climb, from almost 800 users to 1,022.

Ready to scale

With the monetization strategy reconfigured, Wong said Tippl is ready to add more partners.

“We have over 30 partners, and that was the number that we were comfortable with before the update,” he said. “When we reach a critical threshold of users we will start monetizing by charging partners.”

FROM LEFT, TIPPL CO-FOUNDERS MICHAEL FRIEDMAN AND MARK WONG.
We listened to our consumers and the market and ended up making the app free.

That money will be used to grow market reach and make continuous improvements to the app. Expansions in nearby cities like Lincoln and Des Moines are on the horizon, but Wong and his business partner, Michael Friedman, are being cautious.

“Managing our own expectations is probably the biggest challenge,” Wong said. “We don’t want to put too much pressure on our own shoulders and do too much, too fast. We have to remember that we’ve had a plan, even before we won Pitch Black.”

Find your passion

Wong, a first-generation college graduate, didn’t set out to be an entrepreneur. He said he didn’t know it was an option.

His friendship with Friedman opened that door, and now the duo’s strengths balance the company; Wong with his strong background in IT and marketing, and Friedman’s experience in business development.

Their friendship also plays a clear role in the startup’s success.

“There are going to be times where you’re going to hit roadblocks. Your social and personal life is going to beat on you and dampen your mood,”

Wong said.

“I am lucky to have Mike because we both get in those spots and we can be a reminder for the other person that things are tough, but if we want our entrepreneurial dreams to happen we have to do the extra to make it happen.

- MARK WONG, CO-FOUNDER, TIPPL

Extra things like coming home from a full-time job to work on your startup, losing sleep, or having to put other hobbies on the back burner.

“A lot of people have the desire to be an entrepreneur, and a lot of people start things, but you have to have the discipline to stick with it,” he said.

Nebraska Blue Foundation SUPPORTING HEALTH AND WELL-BEING ACROSS THE STATE

As Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) celebrates its 85th anniversary in 2024, the organization is building on its legacy of championing health and well-being through new avenues.

In April, BCBSNE launched the Nebraska Blue Foundation to make significant and targeted investments in promising programs and community initiatives across the state.

“As a company, Blue Cross has been giving back and supporting Nebraskans for 85 years,” said Jay Warren-Teamer, executive director of the Nebraska Blue Foundation. “The foundation is an extension and complement to our current philanthropic giving.”

BCBSNE’s philanthropic legacy includes hosting free flu shot clinics in collaboration with YMCAs across the state annually, providing support for Nebraska’s students and teachers, uplifting organizations making a difference in the community and more.

The Nebraska Blue Foundation builds on this legacy and serves as a dedicated and sustainable resource, enabling BCBSNE to make a greater impact on the lives of Nebraskans. With its inaugural contributions, the foundation invested in initiatives that benefit both urban and rural communities across the state, including:

A $75,000 donation to the Community Wellness Collaborative in Omaha to support work addressing emerging community health needs and fund health care scholarships.

A $200,000 donation for the Douglas A. Kristensen Rural Health Education Building on the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s campus to develop future doctors and other medical professionals in rural parts of the state.

“We’re very excited to see the ripple effect these inaugural gifts create,” said Warren-Teamer. “The tools, resources and physical footprint the foundation leaves will have a huge impact on the preparedness and availability of our health care workforce, especially in rural Nebraska.”

No matter where you’re from in Nebraska, Warren-Teamer said she wants people to know that Blue Cross is deeply committed to the health and well-being of its members and the communities it serves.

Health and well-being aren’t the only factors the foundation considers when choosing organizations to support. The state’s economic vitality and creating ways for Nebraskans to thrive and grow are also top of mind.

“We want to be more than just an insurance company by proactively addressing social determinants of health by supporting programs and organizations that promote health, well-being and economic vitality,” said Warren-Teamer.

BCBSNE announced the foundation’s second round of grants in August. Five Nebraska nonprofits, including Combined Health Agencies Drive, Angels Among Us, YMCA of Greater Omaha, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands and Food Bank for the Heartland, received a $10,000 grant.

“As a Nebraska-based insurer and employer, we have a responsibility to give back and be good corporate citizens,” said Warren-Teamer. “The Nebraska Blue Foundation is giving us more opportunity and the momentum we need to fulfill that responsibility.”

DIRECTOR OF POLICY, BUFFETT EARLY CHILDHOOD INSTITUTE

Thriving Children Conference EVENT

AIMS TO ACTIVATE BUSINESS COMMUNITY

COLORADO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, EXECUTIVES PARTNERING TO INVEST IN CHILDREN (EPIC)

The 2024 Thriving Children, Families and Communities Conference takes place September 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Younes Conference Center North in Kearney, Nebraska.

The statewide conference will focus on the child care crisis in Nebraska and bring together community leaders.

Keynote speaker Linda Smith, director of policy at the Buffett Early Childhood Institute, emphasized the importance of initiating a dialogue with leaders from

various sectors regarding the child care crisis.

“Outside of the early childhood community, [we need] to reach out outside of our traditional silos and figure out how we engage a broader audience in this issue,” Smith said.

In addition to early childhood organizations, the Nebraska Department of Economic Development and the Nebraska Business Development Center are sponsoring the event. Conference organizers encourage the business community to engage in the conversation.

“It also impacts parents’ ability to go to work, and businesses’ ability to recruit workers,” she said. “It impacts our school system and how our children arrive at school, whether they’re ready or not, and our health care system. It impacts so many more than just the early childhood community itself.”

Smith noted that child care providers are small businesses themselves, thus the system needs to be examined to see how these businesses can be profitable, contribute to the economy with wellpaying jobs and provide affordable care.

A solution comes in the form of firstly, understanding the

business model of child care, then secondly, how the business community can support it.

“Those two things are pretty important to understand what can businesses do? And I think businesses can ensure we need them more along the lines of supporting the solutions than we do for businesses themselves to provide it,” Smith said.

Alethea Gomez, Colorado executive director for Executives Partnering to Invest in Children (EPIC), will be delivering the breakout session “Navigating the Child Care Crisis: Tools for Businesses and Employers.”

“The child care shortfall has a growing and measurable impact on the workforce and economic growth, negatively affecting businesses and creating significant challenges in recruiting and retaining available talent into key industries,” Gomez said. “A 2023 report from the Council for a Strong America cited the lack of infant and toddler child care alone accounts for a $122 billion economic cost in lost earnings, productivity and revenue each year. Nebraska accounts for an estimated $781 million of this figure, but it also represents an opportunity for business leaders to proactively address this issue to attract and retain top talent while growing and gaining market share.”

The breakout session will cover the business case for investing in child care solutions. Gomez said the session will help identify ways employers can gain an edge in attracting and retaining talent as well as boost productivity.

Visit the conference website for information and to register. The deadline is Sept. 9 for registration.

The following are some guidelines to consider when posting legal notices with the Midlands Business Journal:

1. Submit a written notice in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document either through mbj.com or through the Legal Department at legals@ mbj.com. For trade names, submit a copy of approved (bar code in upper right hand corner) Application For Registration of Trade Name from the Secretary of State to the same email address.

As a publisher and not a legal advisor we print notices exactly as they are submitted and therefor only comp reruns when the notice was rejected or messed up due to a MBJ error.

All companies submitting notices are responsible for ensuring the content fits with the State’s requirements and are responsible for the cost of republishing the notice if it is rejected due to misinformation or missing information

2. You will receive a confirmation and price quote. Legal notices, except for trade names, are charged per line. The flat fee for a trade name is $50. Payment is now credit or debit card.

3. Deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday for a notice to start publishing that Friday.

4. All costs include fees to file the notice with the Secretary of State and/or any appropriate courts.
