SecureCare grows steadily on strength of innovation by Dwain Hebda

For nearly three decades, SecureCare has grown from a small group of chiropractors looking to provide a streamlined suite of network management services to a trendsetter in the conservative care arena nationwide. During that time, the Omaha-based company has compiled an impressive set of numbers that attests to its success: 15,000 network providers and annually, 8.1 million patients seen and $1.5 billion managed. Louis Andersen, CEO, said the company’s growth has been partly thanks to a renaissance in health care, whereby insurance companies are more welcoming of conservative care, such as physical therapists, chiropractors, speech therapists, occupational therapists and athletic trainers. This reverses the field on decades of standard practice with SecureCare positioned on the crest of the new tide. “What’s happened over the course of decades is large insurance Continued on page 25.

Dornan Law Team poised for growth in 15th year with practice specialties by Michelle Leach

When Dornan Law Team launched, the world was confronting a crisis of a different kind. Now, 15 years onward from its Great Recession origins, the practice now known as Dornan, Troia, Howard, Breitkeutz & Conway is growing with a variety of legal specialties ranging from criminal, civil, and family law, to personal injury workers’ compensation, and immigration, to estate planning and business law.

It’s been in the favorable position to hire three attorneys and two paralegals in the past 18 months, and to advance two associate attorneys to partnership with the firm. “There are going to be challenging times in any business over the years, but one thing has always held true: there is a constant need for excellent legal representation,” said founder and Partner Stuart “Stu” J. Dornan. “We help our clients through Continued on page 27. Owner Andrea Lawse opened a brick and mortar location in the Blackstone District this spring. (Photo by Monica Sempek)

People and plants: a connection between the two exists, and Artemis Tea & Botanical is helping people rekindle that relationship or discover it for the first time. Artemis Tea & Botanical is a small, artisan, woman-owned tea company that is focused on rewilding traditional tea culture. Owned and operated by Andrea Lawse, the company officially

began in 2017. Today, there are seven employees that help run the company and it is poised to double its revenue by the end of 2021, largely in part to its retail space at 4013 Farnam St., opened in March. “We occupy the ‘wild’ edges of tea culture, re-imagining what ‘tea’ is and what it can be, as we blend traditional herbalism with Continued on page 26.

Isabella Walsh Transportation Engineer, HDR

Associations/Titles: PE Hometown: Omaha, Nebraska Education: Iowa State University, BS in Civil Engineering

How I got into the business: I was around construction growing up and was mesmerized by watching a mundane pile of wood become a majestic house. I enjoyed math in school (and yes — also loved Legos), and I felt that I could thrive in a career like engineering. Accomplishments or milestones: Identifying a narrower field in a wide-ranging industry that I enjoyed (urban design and transit) and working my way onto related projects. That led to the civil design lead role for a large streetcar project. First job: Ever: Umpire for girls’ softball. In the industry: internship at Des

Moines Water Works. Biggest career break: Having and honing skills not directly related to engineering tasks like writing, speaking, and communication put me in several situations that have benefited my career. The toughest part of the job: Reading comments and critiques on designs I spent a lot of time creating. The best advice I have received: Finding the line between choosing tasks/roles you are already good at and being willing to try ones not in your wheelhouse. It’s important to shine but also to continue to improve yourself. About my family: Two humans and two cats. Something else I’d like to accomplish: Triathlon(s?) and visiting all the national parks. How my business will change in the next decade: More of a focus on equity, leading to an emphasis on Complete Streets for all users and all abilities. It has been interesting to witness this shift, and I am excited to see how many more people will benefit

from this focus. Mentor who has helped the most in my career: Gayle Sturdivant (City of Omaha, Design Division Manager). She is an amazing first-hand example of a successful female leader in a male dominated industry. Outside interests: All things outdoors including traveling, restaurant patios, mountain hiking, national park exploring, beaches/pools, and neighborhood walks. I spend the cold weather months reading mystery novels and enjoying musicals, superhero movies, and wine. Pet Peeves: The word “across” does not have an “ed” on the end of it. “We walked across the street.” Favorite vacation spot: Hawaii — perfect temperature year-round, half beach/ half mountain hiking, great food (i.e. poke and a good IPA). Other careers I would like to try: I would love to get my pilot’s license. Favorite cause or charity: Habitat for Humanity. Favorite app: Mozzarella sticks (or Spotify).

Omaha Press Club to induct six journalists into Hall of Fame Submitted by the Omaha Press Club

Six outstanding journalists will be inducted on Saturday, Sept. 18 into the Omaha Press Club Hall of Fame. The 2020 Hall of Fame event was postponed due to the COVID pandemic. The 2021 inductees are:

followed by dinner and the induction ceremonies. The event is open to the public. Cost is $50 for Press Club members and $60 for non-members. Malcolm (Mal) Adams – Mal Adams’s brilliant career has spanned the gamut starting as a broadcast journalist in Omaha and now as an entrepreneur in Japan. The Omaha native graduated from Central High School in 1967 and worked as a reporter/photographer at KETV in 1969, his sophomore year at Omaha University. Adams was only the second Black to report on air in Nebraska TV history and was the first to anchor a regular daily newscast in Nebraska. Adams first went to Japan in 1976 as a news anchor for KNX radio in Los Angeles. In 1981, he became the TV/radio correspondent for the Tokyo bureau of CBS News. Adams helped to start the Cable News Network in Japan in 1984. He produced and hosted CNN’s series, “This Week in Japan,” which featured interviews with celebrities and government leaders. He interviewed four U.S. presidents – Nixon, Carter, Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Adams created Totown, the first Black-owned record label in Japan. He expanded it into a lucrative enterprise known as Totown Communications Group Japan and has become an icon in the field of cross-cultural corporate communications. Adams has received the Maejima Prize, Japan’s equivalent to the Pulitzer Prize in journalism. He is the only non-Japanese to have received the award. Now 72, Adams still lives in Japan.

Trina Creighton – As an award-winning anchor/reporter at Omaha’s KMTV for 15 years, Trina Creighton wanted to make a difference. Now, as a college professor, she’s hoping to inspire her broadcasting students – and her colleagues in academia – to strive for the same goal. The longtime midday anchor began teaching at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2001, quickly becoming a highly respected faculty member in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Her efforts there have grown well beyond the classroom. In recent years, Creighton has emerged as a leader at UNL, spearheading new diversity and inclusion efforts while working to ensure that everyone on campus has a voice. Creighton started down this career-expanding path in 2018 when she took over the college’s “Social Justice, Human Rights and the Media” course while also being selected to serve on UNL’s N 150 Subcommittee for Diversity and Inclusion. Today, she’s chair of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications’ Diversity and Inclusion Committee and recently became a diversity professional after completing a certificate program at Cornell University. In addition to her work in teaching journalism to a new generation of students, Creighton is striving to ensure that future faculty and staff at UNL come from a diverse array of backgrounds.

Chris Christen – Chris Christen’s interest in a career in journalism started in high school. She was influenced by her newspaper-reading mother and summer internships at her hometown paper, The Oakland Independent. She attended Midland Lutheran College, and then headed to southwest Iowa to work as a reporter-photographer at the Red Oak Express. Two years later, she was named editor of the tri-weekly newspaper. Stringer work for the Omaha World-Herald prompted an invitation from the daily’s managing editor to interview for a copy editing position in Lifestyles. She initially turned down the job thinking it was too “fluffy,” but was convinced to reconsider. Her plan was to stay at the World-Herald for five to seven years. She found her niche in features journalism, serving as the paper’s first special sections editor and later as niche publications editor. She also had a stint as design director. At the time of her resignation in May, she was serving as features/special sections/magazine/book editor. She made the hard decision to leave the newsroom for a chance to blaze a new trail at the University of Nebraska Medical Center as senior manager of creative services. The coolest part, she said, is that people have stopped asking her when she is going to retire. “Clearly, not anytime soon.”

Susan Eustice (posthumous) – Susan Eustice was divisional director of public and media relations for the Salvation Army division headquarters in Omaha. In this role, she was the public face – and voice – of the organization for more than 20 years. In addition to Eustice’s impactful media presence, she oversaw numerous fundraisers and events, including the Salvation Army/KETV Back-to-School Backpack Drive and Adopt-A-Family Radiothon at Christmastime. She previously worked for the Leukemia Society and Opera Omaha. Eustice was a past president and board member of the Omaha Press Club and was co-chair of the club’s Communications Committee for many years. She also was past president of the Public Relations Society of America and the International Association of Business Communicators. Eustice passed away on May 11, 2019, following a brief illness. She was married to her husband, Bill, for 43 years, and they had three children: daughters, Kyle and Ellen, and son, Sean.

Henry Cordes – Henry Cordes has been a reporter and staff writer for the Omaha World-Herald for more than 35 years. The Omaha native joined the paper’s sports department months after graduating from Central High School in 1981. In 1985, he graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and moved over to the World-Herald’s news division, first as a police reporter. He served for seven years as the paper’s statehouse bureau chief in Lincoln and he’s covered politics, the military and public policy. He’s a five-time winner of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Sorensen Award, given each year to recognize the state’s most distinguished journalism, and has won national or regional awards for deadline writing, sports writing, feature writing, business writing, enterprise reporting and investigative reporting. His deadline story on a 2007 mass shooting in Omaha was featured in the Poynter Institute’s 2008 book, “Best Newspaper Writing.” He also has authored four books, including two on the history of Nebraska football, and one on an Omaha serial killer. In 2018, Cordes was inducted into the Central High School Hall of Fame. He served as president of the Omaha Press Club in 2000. He also has twice served as president of the Omaha Press Club Foundation and currently serves as chairman of its scholarship committee.

Doug Parrott – Doug Parrott began his career as a reporter for KETV immediately after graduation from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During his 15 years at KETV, he opened the first Lincoln Bureau for an Omaha TV station and helped successfully push for cameras in Nebraska courtrooms. He later returned to Omaha to serve as assignment editor for KETV and as the station’s Crime Stoppers reporter. Parrott left the station to launch his public relations career as communications director for Nebraska Gov. Kay Orr. For the past 30 years, he has been one of the state’s leading PR executives, working primarily with Bailey Lauerman. A threetime recipient of the Professional of the Year Award from the Nebraska Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, Parrott helped build community support for several civic projects including Aksarben Village, TD Ameritrade Park and Qwest Center Omaha (now CHI Health Center). He also has served as the local communications director for the past four Olympic Swim Trials.

Diversification, central location, support promising metro area recovery by Michelle Leach

It was a familiar refrain during the Great Recession, and it is a familiar refrain again; how indicators of regional economic health in the Midlands area are robust when compared to other parts of the country during the present recovery. These indicators tell just a part of the story of Omaha’s traction in the face of persistent global health concerns. “Our resilience throughout the pandemic was formidable, and has allowed us Johnson to recover, and even accelerate, favorably,” said Todd Johnson, senior vice president, economic development, with the Greater Omaha Chamber. “Our June 2021 unemployment rate is 3.1%, which is lower than the overall U.S. according to [U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics] data. “We’ve grown the number of jobs almost 9% in June 2021 as compared to April 2020, and the overall employment numbers are up 5% over that same timeframe.” When asked about the recovery when compared to “peer markets,” Johnson said the region is “nation-leading,” citing the Brooking Metro Recovery Index. “By that measure,

member organizations swiftly pivoted. “We saw it in the [Paycheck Protection Program] loan numbers from the local banks,” he explained. “We saw it in the amount of personal protection equipment and sanitizer produced and distributed locally. We still see it to this day as businesses of all sizes continue to restaff to meet growing market activity.” To lingering challenges, Johnson referred the complicated issue of workforce development. “It’s [an issue] we’ve been working for years,” he said. “It is critical that we unlock the available workforce we have here in the region.” He referenced work to create more paths to unemployment. “There is a distinct gap in our minority educational attainment and workforce participation outcomes that we can close with a committed effort,” Johnson said. Julie Sigmon is the director of the Omaha STEM Ecosystem, a citywide partnership to build the skilled workforce in science, tech, engineering and math careers. “Our mission is to work with education and with business and industry to grow that future workforce, and we look at it from preschool to lifelong learning,” she said. “Everybody has a role, and you have to get business and education to talk to each other.” Noting that the biggest influences in career choices are parents, educators and experiential learning experiences, Sigmon highlighted their internship efforts to build students’ exposure to careers. “Kids are more savvy than they ever were before,” she said. “We have to take that spark of excitement and innovation … and help them make that link to education.” Organizations can add as much or as little information as they want about available opportunities, via OmahaSTEM.com, including videos that represent virtual tours of facilities and that provide insights into what a job really looks like. “It evens out the playing field for businesses that may not have a big recruiting platform,” she said. Furthermore, it’s a “leveler” for diversity by communicating opportunities for all youth, including those traditionally underrepresented in given industries or fields. As it relates to nonprofit employment in the state, Nonprofit Association of the Midlands Public Policy and Communications Manager Hannah Young said its last two economic impact reports have shown that 1 in 11 NebrasContinued on next page.

Citing noted educator and author, Peter Drucker, Young said “every great social innovation of the last century began with the passion of a nonprofit organization. “We can credit nonprofit organizations, she continued, “for our first hospitals, vaccine research, educational programming, and even our public libraries.” She also noted the term, “nonprofit,” may lead some to believe these organizations are operated in the absence of financial practices. “Nonprofits generate revenue, maintain assets and acquire expenses much like their for-profit counterparts,” she added. “Nonprofit organizations purchase goods and provide services, which produces an economic ripple effect that benefits the entire state of Nebraska.” Reportedly, nonprofits generated more than $12 billion in annual revenue and hold in excess of $23 billion in assets. “While these totals are large, the majority of nonprofits are striving to achieve large missions on small budgets,” Young said. “This is one indicator of the passion and efficiency used by nonprofit leaders and staff to achieve their missions.” As NAM’s research indicates, the pandemic is bringing to light the importance of nonprofits’ efforts in our communities. “Throughout the last 18-plus months, nonprofits have continued to provide services to the most vulnerable populations in our

at the South Point Business Park. The stark reality for the lodging industry, by way of Visit Omaha’s Executive Director Deborah Ward, is that the pandemic-induced losses wiped out more than a decade of growth – to below 2010 levels. “Recovery will not happen overnight, but we are starting to see positive signs,” she said; for instance, “When you look at hotel occupancy numbers throughout the city, 72% of all hotel rooms were filled during the month of June 2021, the highest in 23 months. You have to go back to June of 2019 to reach a higher occupancy — 77%. June is typically our highest occupancy month due to CWS and summer travelers.” Average occupancy, nationwide for June, was 66%. A caveat: “When you look at 2021 compared to 2019, the pandemic is still having an impact. For the first half of 2021, hotel revenue came in at $94 million, even with the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials that is 26% below revenue numbers for the same period in 2019 ($119 million) without the Trials.” Convention-wise, she described the market as being on “unstable ground.” “Many associations, which hold meetings, are still trying to recover themselves,” she said. “As cities come back, we will all be fighting to entice those associations to choose Omaha — so competition will be fierce. Even so, year-to-date, the Visit Omaha sales team has secured 70 meetings and events that will bring $66.6 million dollars into local community. While it will take time to fully recover, we are making progress.”

Construction projects are changing the city’s skyline by David Kubicek

Numerous construction projects are underway that will shape Omaha’s skyline over the next several years. The RiverFront project is an approximately 72-acre transformation taking place in downtown Omaha, beginning at the Missouri River shore and spanning westward into the city’s core. Work began at The RiverFront in March of 2019 in Gene Leahy Mall, followed by the closure of Heartland of America Park in late 2019 and then Lewis Engdahl & Clark Landing in September of 2020. “[The Parks] will reopen following their individual completions — starting with Gene Leahy Mall on Memorial Day weekend, 2022, followed by Lewis & Clark Landing, then Heartland of America Park in 2023,” said Kristyna Engdahl, director of communications for the Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority (MECA). In the next nine months permanent amenities will be installed and finalized in Gene Leahy Mall in preparation for reopening. Over the next year in Heartland of America Park, the Conagra Lake edge will be reshaped to make way for an expansive great lawn capable of hosting largescale events and festivals, and the innovative Skate Ribbon — just under the size of a football field and able to accommodate inline skating and

Renovations include additional classrooms, enhanced amenities that support increased public programs, and a redesign of more than three acres of public gardens and outdoor space. Site work for the expansion has begun and construction will occur in phases. For the safety of visitors, staff, and the art, the museum will be closed from May, 2022, through reopening in 2024. “Joslyn Art Museum is one of Nebraska’s greatest assets, and Snøhetta’s energized, inspired work on our twenty-first century expansion has set the stage for the next phase of the Museum’s life while honoring its storied past,” Joslyn’s Executive Director Jack Becker said. “Snøhetta’s visionary design celebrates what Joslyn means to us, to our city, and to Nebraska.”

Financial services firms helping Omahans plan for the future by Brooke Strickland

The pandemic shifted financial priorities for many people around the state and the country. Mindy Helfrich, vice president of Vintage Financial Group, said she’s seen more people looking at long-term investments and how to best manage money that they’ve received from the national stimulus package. Others have also asked about methods to best get their estate in order. “In the last 18 months, we have noticed clients and prospects paying more attention to their investment strategies and looking to a financial adviser to help,” she Harrison said. “Some are simply overwhelmed by the number of investment options, and they don’t feel comfortable making decisions on their own, and some want an adviser to look at their whole financial picture. Because of the stimulus, people are more aware of their finances and have more cash on hand than they might have traditionally had, so they are looking for advice on how those funds should be implemented in their plans. We are also seeing more people who want to complete their estate plans to ensure assets get passed in the most efficient way possible.” Tim Harrison, founder and CEO of Harrison Financial Services, said that more clients are taking the time to plan for the future. “In my opinion, one of the biggest ways the pandemic has impacted the financial services sector in Omaha is the increased sense of urgency around wealth planning,” Harrison said. “Individuals have seen the toll the pandemic has taken in terms of mental and physical health, and I believe that has prompted people to recognize the need to ensure their financial affairs are ‘buttoned up.’” John Bothof, Northwest Bank Omaha president, recommended that when looking at finances, people should consider looking at mortgage interest rates and determine if a restructure is in order. “If you are a homeowner and have not evaluated your current interest rate on your mortgage, you should,” he said. “We continue to have historic low interest rates on mortgages and, it is a great time to evaluate restructuring household debt. You may be able to shorten your mortgage from a 30 year to a 15- or 20-year mortgage, without much change in payment. This will increase the equity in their homes much faster. If the consumer can take advantage of the lower rates and reduce their monthly outflow, one should consider increasing their contributions to their retirement accounts.” Helfrich said that finding a financial partner can greatly alleviate confusion for the average person looking for assistance with their finances. “The financial world can seem complex, but it doesn’t need to be,” she said. “As your life gets busy, sometimes you need an adviser to help you understand different solutions. Assisting clients with those decisions is the best part of being an adviser. Everyone feels better when they have an advocate working with them, and a financial adviser can be that advocate.” Last, focus on finding a financial adviser or banker that takes time to build a relationship, with

the goal of keeping your best interests in mind. “Getting to know your banker can provide you with the peace of mind that your needs are being satisfied with your best interest in mind and not just another transaction,” Bothof said. Harrison reiterates that wealth management goes far beyond just the wealth — it involves a commitment to learning about the client as a person, too. “Individuals should seek a financial professional who will incorporate every component of their life, including health, family, legacy, friendBothof ships, and finance,” he said. “Excellent professionals will aim to understand every aspect of your life, ensuring a holistic approach that will support individual goals.”

This can reduce the number of years in college (and associated costs), as well as alleviate the stress of applying to multiple graduate schools throughout the region/country for these competitive programs.” Additionally, CSM is launching BOLD, an engagement, inclusion and support program, which Kottich said stands for Belonging, Overcome (obstacles), Leaders and Destination (as it relates to their professional and personal destinations after college). “New undergraduate students will have BOLD Advisors who will work with them as they transition into college, connecting them to campus and community resources and serving as a consistent, caring coach along their journey toward their professional and career goals,” Kottich said. “CSM’s BOLD Advisors will serve all new undergraduate students; however, we expect the additional outreach will be especially beneficial for students who are first-generation, academically disadvantaged, student mothers, racial/ethnic minorities and/or financially disadvantaged.” Kottich referred to the likes of a lack of racial diversity among nurses in the metro (only 7% are ethnic/racial minorities) while serving a 25% minority patient population — so, there is a disparity. “This is an area where CSM can help our community, considering that 23% of our Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates over the last three years were racial/ethnic minorities,” she said.

There is also a great shortage of nurses; citing Nebraska Center for Nursing stats, the state has a shortfall of 4,000 nurses. This shortage is expected to climb to almost 5,500 in the next four years. To other investments, the $18 million, 90,000-square-foot Lied Fitness Center and Fieldhouse opened last month. She said the 75,000-square-foot addition houses a Human Performance Lab, whereby faculty and students conduct research. She indicated the center is better able to accommodate CSM’s 11 varsity teams and allows for the college to expand fitness-related outreach and partnerships. Midland University highlighted agribusiness as a new major, which was announced by the school in December 2020. The major was also announced alongside three “compressed majors” in agribusiness, crop production management and agricultural marketing, and a minor in animal production management. Business Chair Nick Schreck said the program was created by those in ag, with the idea of helping others fill the talent void in the industry. “We know that both Fremont and Nebraska are rooted in agriculture and we know there are opportunities to learn about agriculture from other schools,” he said. “With Midland, we wanted to take a different approach by offering an academic program that connected our students to those opportunities. When we consulted with local agriculture professionals, their message was clear: they want business people that can speak the ag language.”

mergers, increased outreach post-pandemic by David Kubicek

Several local nonprofits are positioning themselves for growth after a rough year. The Nebraska Humane Society renovated its adoption area, according to Pam Wiese, vice president of PR and marketing. “It was donor-driven,” she said. “When our former CEO, Judy Varner, retired after 19 years, some donors decided they wanted to do something that would make an impact in her name. Our shelter was 20 years old, had some wear and tear, and needed a little updating based on the progress in animal sheltering [over Wiese the past] 20 years.” The Humane Society opened for walk throughs on July 1 after doing adoptions by appointment during the COVID-19 lockdown. The Humane Society’s goals reach beyond adoption. “If we can keep pets in the homes they are already in, it’s a much more efficient system, it’s much less expensive, and it’s better for the pet to stay in the home it really loves,” Wiese said. “We’re working toward making that process as good as it can be. We work with pet owners so they don’t have to surrender their pets.” Kim Jubenville had been with WhyArts as an artist since 2006. When Executive Director Carolyn Anderson left in 2019, Jubenville agreed

to step in as executive director to help the board forge a new path for the organization, which provides quality arts experiences that includes other underserved populations such as at-risk, early childhood, seniors, and family services. “First, we needed to decide what we wanted the new WhyArts to grow into, and then create a strategic plan on how to expand and build our capacity to reach that goal,” Jubenville said. “We approached Arts in Motion in January of 2020 and the timing seemed right and our missions were aligned. When the pandemic hit, we were already committed to the process Filipi and the extra time gave us the ability to focus on what we wanted the newly merged organization to look like.” The merger became official on July 1, 2021, and the organizations merged their boards and staff. “This merger almost doubled our size,” Jubenville said. “We now have an annual operating budget of $600,000 and expect our programming to meet or exceed that when we return safely back into the community. Now that the organizations are merged and have a bold strategic vision, we will be starting the search for a new executive director to continue the plan. That search will start in October with hopes to have Continued on next page.

Staffing situation critical and getting worse, say health care experts by Dwain Hebda

Experts say the pandemic conditions of 2020 have continued to create myriad challenges for Omaha’s health care community. “We are seeing nurses leave in-patient nursing to take other roles in the hospital or to retire early or stay home with their kids,” said Kathy English, executive vice president, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer with Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. “Replacing those nurses is tough.” English said hospitals are not able to dip into short-term personnel reserves as they once did to fill gaps. “Hospitals have historically relied on travelers to come in and fill gaps and are offering $165, $175 an hour to travelers,” she said. “But there aren’t travelers to be had.” Kenny McMorris, CEO for Charles Drew Health Center, said stress is a major concern for the health care workers who have stayed on the job. “Everyone is maintaining,” he said. “We’ve tried to do everything we can as a company to implement practices that stem from mindfulness, doing everything we can to balance the demands of home life for our employees which we’ve done

pretty decently as an organization. “We have roughly 196 employees and since the onset of the pandemic, I think we’ve had a

McMorris Distefano total of about 46 that have contracted the virus at one point or another. We’re finding a lot are fighting an uphill battle of being able to mentally wake up every day and come and put their best foot forward.” McMorris said even as vaccinations have become available, the escalating waves of COVID-19 patients is a gut-punch to morale. “As we all see in the numbers around country and state, the Delta variant is highly transmissible

and the level of disease is at an all-time high,” he said. “We know what we’re up against; we’ve got to continue to keep sticking to our basic principles and make sure that we’re doing the best that we can to keep the community informed.” Hospitals aren’t the only ones hurting for help, home health is another area that’s desperate for people. “We have a lot of challenges right now and No. 1 is the same challenge everyone is having right now and that’s staffing,” said Dustin Distefano, CEO of A Place at Home. “We get constant inquires every single day, every single week, for in-home care services that we can’t fulfill. And it’s not just us, it’s everybody.” Distefano said the options are limited when it comes to combing an already-tight labor market alongside everyone else. “We’ve switched our mindset from just marketing to consumers to really, marketing to the staffing supply chain. That’s all we do all day, every day, try to recruit and put things together that can bring in people.” Mike Feagler, Nebraska Hospital Association vice president of finance, said labor is only one of the challenges constituent hospitals are facing. “The recent increase in patients is really a concern,” he said. “Dealing with what the governor has issued, especially for our large hospitals, in terms of elective inpatient procedures is concerning. A lot of our hospitals, especially in Omaha and Lincoln, have voluntarily held those back, but that’s still revenue lost.” Feagler said recent surges and other challenges related to the pandemic have returned to the association to its war-room operational mentality. “We spend a lot of time communicating with members,” he said. “We have a weekly member call providing updates and we do a call with Dr.

Gary Anthone with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. We had slowed those down to every other week, but increased it to keep our members up to date.”

It was incredible to see how many of our business partners — through their employees — raised as much as they had in prior years, in some cases even more during such difficult times.” Overall, the organization, like many others, saw overall increased expenses and decreased revenue in 2020 and into 2021. This year the organization added six new nonprofit members: Bright Lights Summer Learning Adventures in Lincoln, Omaha Girls Rock and Omaha Public Library Foundation, Kearney Area Children’s Museum, Disability Rights Nebraska, and Down Syndrome Association for Families. “Looking forward, we are increasing our outreach to corporate and nonprofit partners, raising awareness of Give Nebraska and our 74 nonprofit members, and increasing our fundraising,” Filipi said. “As we grow in these areas, we can provide even more support to these vital nonprofits and their missions throughout Nebraska.”

China’s corn-buying binge may fall short as bumper harvest looms by Alfred Cang

China’s record corn-buying spree — a cornerstone of its trade deal with the U.S. — may be running out of steam, with risks growing that imports by the top buyer will fall short of U.S. ofAgriculture ficial estimates. The domestic harvest season is looming and China is expecting a bumper crop after farmers sharply boosted corn planting this year. This is already starting to weigh on Chinese corn

prices, narrowing the gap with overseas prices and hurting the attractiveness of imports, according to traders and analysts. China’s corn purchases in 2021-22 will probably miss the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s prediction of 26 million tons, said Darin Friedrichs, senior Asia commodity analyst at StoneX Group Inc. That forecast “is pretty aggressive and I don’t think we’ll see it.” The nation’s agricultural imports, especially from the U.S., have been closely VISITING THE ISLE OF WIT

watched by investors and businesses tracking the progress of the trade deal. Prices across a variety of farm products have soared in the past year because of Chinese demand for crops to feed its expanding hog herd, stoking concern about food inflation. Corn in Chicago jumped to an eight-year high in May. China has imported about 23 million tons in the 2020-21 marketing year, close to USDA’s forecast of 26 million tons. The department kept its official forecasts unchanged for 2021-22, while the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service said imports would likely be 20 million tons. Up until 2020, the Asian nation was never a huge buyer of U.S. corn. But its supply deficit has widened after years of reducing state corn stockpiles and as its hog herd recovers from a devastating African swine fever outbreak. The purchases

also help meet commitments under the U.S. trade deal. High corn prices have spurred Chinese farmers to switch away from soybean planting in the northeast, so there should be increased corn production this year, Friedrichs said. Additionally, there are problems with China’s wheat quality due to bad weather. While that wheat can’t be used for food, it can be used for animal feed, further reducing corn demand. “The market is bifurcated — China’s diet is becoming more western, and that creates a supply deficit for high-quality wheat,” he said. “China will likely import relatively large amounts of wheat this year to help supplement the stocks of high-quality wheat.” ©2021 Bloomberg L.P. China’s amassing of genomic data highlighting global biotech race by Gopal Ratnam

“Losing your DNA is not like losing your credit card.” That little-noticed warning from the top U.S. intelligence office came in February, alerting Americans of the risks of inadvertently handing over their genetic codes to China. Unlike a misTechnology placed credit card, lost DNA cannot be replaced, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in the bulletin, adding that Beijing, as part of its quest to become a global leader in biotech, is aggressively collecting large quantities of genomic data from around the world. To meet the surging global demand for tests as the COVID-19 pandemic spread last year, one of the leading Chinese biotech firms, BGI, sold test kits to 180 countries and established labs in 18, the lead spy agency says, warning that the genetic data it was collecting could be flowing into Chinese databases. Although there are no Chinese COVID-19 test labs or kits in the United States yet, China is seeking Americans’ genetic data either by acquiring U.S. genomic sequencing companies or by buying a stake in popular genetic testing companies such as 23andMe. Beijing also has been partnering with U.S. hospital chains to provide cheap genomic sequencing services, according to the agency and a recent report by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. Left unchecked, China’s advances in biotech could lead to drug discoveries capable of undermining the U.S. pharmaceutical industry, the agency said. “No 23andMe genetic testing is performed in China or by any China-based or Chinese-owned entities,”Andy Kill, a spokesman for the company said in an email. “We do not share any individual level customer data with any entity located in China, or any China-based or Chinese-owned entities.” Some lawmakers, national security experts and biotech researchers are concerned about the kinds of advances China is seeking to make in the world of life sciences even as most of the world’s attention is focused on

China’s advances in military hardware and Beijing’s role in ongoing cyberattacks and internet-based espionage. “China has amassed the largest genomic holdings of anywhere in the world,” Anna Puglisi, a senior fellow at the Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, told the Senate Intelligence Committee at a recent hearing. “Understanding what genes do, and so access to that kind of data, both their own and from other places in the world, gives them an advantage in figuring out” how to develop medicines. Faced with an aging population and expected massive costs associated with future health care needs, China is focusing on precision medicine, or formulating medications tailored for people with specific genetic conditions. Sens. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., are among lawmakers alarmed at China’s global genome grab and are pushing agencies to ensure that Americans’ health data doesn’t end up in Chinese hands. Biological revolution But the potential for advances in biotech to yield tailored medicines is only a small part of a much larger set of gains for any country that masters the coming revolution in biology, which experts say could rival or even exceed that of the digital age that yielded computers and the internet. “Advances in biological sciences, combined with the accelerating development of computing, data processing, and artificial intelligence, are fueling a new wave of innovation that could have significant impact in sectors across the economy, from healthcare and agriculture to consumer goods and energy,” the McKinsey Global Institute said in a May 2020 report titled “Bio Revolution.” McKinsey collected examples of as many as 400 potential applications, more than half of them outside health care, and estimated that they could have “direct economic impact of up to $4 trillion a year over the next 10 to 20 years.” Synthetic biology, which refers to redesigning biological organisms to have new properties, could lead to as much as 60 percent of the world’s physical inputs being Continued on next page.

China’s amassing of genomic data highlights global biotech race Continued from preceding page. made using biological means, including manufactured silk, leather and non-carbon-based plastics, the McKinsey report said. Alarmed by China’s aggressive ambitions to become the world leader in science and technology in the next decade, the Senate and House have individually passed bills that would provide nearly $80 billion to the National Science Foundation and to national labs overseen by the Department of Energy. The measures would provide funding to the NSF and labs to focus on 10 critical areas, including biotech. None of the bills has passed both chambers. Despite such legislation, policymakers and members of Congress are still more focused on competition in digital technologies — such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, for example — than on the potential for synthetic biology to transform the U.S. economy,

according to experts. Although the United States “basically invented the bio revolution,” national investments are still focused on health care needs such as beating cancer or finding cures for other illnesses, and less on translating gains in biology into the broader economy, said Tara O’Toole, executive vice president at In-Q-Tel, a venture capital firm that focuses on investing in technologies relevant to U.S. intelligence agencies. China, on the other hand, is rapidly building a government-funded, commercially oriented translation machine that aims to take the fruits of synthetic biology to transform agriculture, food production and other manufacturing on a global scale, O’Toole said. ‘Carbon efficient’ Biotech experts often cite the example of Impossible Foods for how biology can revolutionize broad sectors of the economy.

The California company’s burgers and sausages are made using altered plant proteins that mimic the taste and feel of beef and pork without downsides of animal proteins, such as high cholesterol or factory farming of cows and pigs. The plant-based alternatives “are just cheaper and more carbon-efficient” than the animal products, said Jason Kelly, co-founder of Gingko Bioworks, a Boston-based biotech company that programs biological cells to create new strains that are more cost-efficient in developing medicines, food and manufacturing. Instead of trying to bring electronics manufacturing back to the United States from cheaper locations in East Asia, for example, the country could focus on building a new category of manufacturing using genetically engineered plants that make products, Kelly said. the start of the deferment period. Contact your servicer if you’d like to start automatic payments again. —Suspended collections activities Collections activities for federal student loans have been paused since March 2020, and defaulted loans from the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program were added to the list of eligible loans in March 2021. Borrowers who have defaulted on FFEL loans since March 13, 2020, will have their seized wages and tax returns automatically restored, have their defaulted accounts set to good standing and have refunds offered on voluntary payments made since that date until Jan. 31, 2022. Private student loans Private student loan debt isn’t covered under the presidential action — there are no government protections that require private lenders to waive interest or defer payments for borrowers. However, your private lender might offer a hardship relief program or temporary student loan forbearance. For example, Earnest offers a short-term student loan forbearance for eligible borrowers upon request. If you can’t pay your private student loans because the pandemic has affected your income, reach out to your lender immediately. Keep in mind that eligibility for hardship relief programs varies among lenders. Personal loans Many banks are stepping up to waive fees and help consumers stay on track with their loans despite losses in income. For example, Marcus by Goldman Sachs is letting customers defer payments on their personal loans for one month without accruing interest. If you’re unsure if your lender is offering assistance on personal loans, contact it directly to ask. New programs may be announced on a rolling basis, so regularly check to see if help is available. Home equity loans Homeowners with home equity loans should reach out to their lenders if payments can’t be made on time. Some financial institutions are offering temporary deferment on home equity loans for those who are eligible. For example, Bank of America is of-

fering a three-month or longer payment deferment if your income has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. If you’re struggling to stay on top of your home equity loan, call your lender to learn more about your options. List of lenders providing loan relief This is not an exhaustive list. Contact your lender for details about hardship assistance programs it offers. -Bank of America: Payment deferral on home loans is available upon request. -Fifth Third Bank: Mortgage customers can request up to 180 days of payment Continued on page 24.

What to do if you can’t pay your loans during the pandemic As the coronavirus pandemic carries on and the economy recovers, some U.S. workers still face financial uncertainty. For those struggling to keep up with their debt, there are reFinancial lief options available from banks, lenders and the federal government. If you can’t pay your loans or soon won’t be able to, one of these programs may be able to help. Federal student loans In August, the U.S. Department of Education extended the federal student loan payment pause through Jan. 31, 2022. The pause was set to expire Sept. 30, 2021, and the administration has made it clear that this is the last extension. For an extra four months, federal student loan borrowers and borrowers with defaulted Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans can take advantage of several relief measures —Interest waiver Federal student loan interest rates will remain at 0 percent through the end of January 2022. Borrowers don’t need to take any action to put this into place. However, check your student loan statements each month to ensure that interest isn’t charged on your federal loans through January. —Payment suspension Federal student loan borrowers also have extended relief when it comes to monthly student loan payments. Payments on Direct Loans owned by the Department of Education are paused until Jan. 31, 2022. This payment suspension is also automatic. This suspension does not make your student loan debt disappear, but it does allow you to save on monthly payments through January. If you’re working toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness, you will continue to receive credit during the suspension period if you work full time for a qualifying employer. Borrowers can also choose to continue making payments during this temporary deferment. If you want to continue your regularly scheduled student loan payments, your entire payment will be applied to your principal balance, which helps you pay down your debt faster. If you use automatic payments, these may have been automatically suspended at

become a new kind of manufacturing facility growing engineered plants, Kelly said. Scientists already have engineered mushrooms to make leather and programmed DNA to store data files — all of Shakespeare’s sonnets and a snippet of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech have been encoded in DNA because it can store vastly more information for longer periods than a silicon chip can. The use of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 is another example of synthetic biology in action. The importance of biotech for U.S. national and economic security is not lost on mathematician and geneticist Eric Lander, who is director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy and President Joe Biden’s top science adviser. In a recent op-ed in The Washington Post, Lander wrote that the United States should set a goal of developing an effective vaccine within 100 days of detecting any future pandemic and then be able to make enough doses to supply the world within 200 days. The U.S. should aim to get rid of sterile needles and injections and deliver vaccines through skin patches, Lander wrote, adding that a global early-warning system ought to be in place to monitor and respond to biological threats. “These goals are ambitious,” Lander wrote. “But they’re feasible,” he said, citing the example of NASA’s Apollo program that sent humans to the moon. ©2021 CQ-Roll Call, Inc., All Rights Reserved. Auction helps to revive small vegetable farms in Pennsylvania – helps build Amish communities by Joseph N. DiStefano

In box trucks and horse-drawn wagons, Amish farmers and others carry corrugated crates of bright vegetables and fruits to an open-sided auction house in Oxford, Chester County, Pa., to meet buyers for grocers, restaurants, and caterers three mornings a week. It seems like a scene out of time. But the Oxford Produce Auction LLC, owned by 40 Amish farmers, is only 10 years old. Just off U.S. Agriculture 1 highway from Philadelphia to Baltimore, the auction signals a surprising shift in the 300-year-old farm communities of western Chester and southern Lancaster Counties, where young families are making a living from smaller pieces of ground, instead of leaving the region or seeking wage jobs. With irrigation, greenhouses, and family labor, they raise glossy tomatoes and sweet corn, peppers and eggplants, watermelons and cantaloupes, and much more. They know they can sell these items to produce-conscious city and local buyers at the auction, for prices that are competitive with the durable produce trucked east from big industrial growers. Starting at 9 a.m., auctioneers from Petersheim & Longenecker, hired by the market, begin their rapid-fire chant and patter, drawing bids from the crowd. At a minute or two per lot, it takes more than two hours to sell it all. “Sweet corn picked at 4 a.m., we sell it at 9, it’s on the store shelves by 11. This is the way to market produce,” says Jeff Stoltzfus, who grows strawberries and melons on his family’s 35 acres in Cochranville, 10 miles up the road. He’s not Amish, but his name is a common one here. A trio of bearded growers in bright blue and deep green shirts step close and ask his advice on fighting the phytophthora blight that can turn new-picked watermelons to mush. Stoltzfus is also a state agricultural extension service agent. He estimates there are as many as 100 similar auctions based in Amish and other faith communities across the country. Wherever Plain communities with their larger families are expanding, “once there’s a critical mass, there’s an auction.” A smaller market in Leola, Lancaster County, dates to 1985. “Vegetables have replaced dairy around here,” Stoltzfus added. “You can make a living on produce, because you have thousands of neighbors. It gets into Philly restaurants and local markets. “Twenty years ago, I thought the Amish were moving away from suburban areas. But now the bankers are doing loans on vegetable-only farms. You never used to see that. Now, you can make as much on 25 acres of vegetables as from 70 acres of dairy. They are buying the ‘farm-ettes,’ where a family might have kept a weekend horse farm, and putting in a couple greenhouses and a few acres of peppers.” In the concrete-floored shed, twice expanded until it’s now longer than a football field, the farmers crowd by their boxes, some in bright shirts and straw hats. Children scurry on errands, or stretch their necks to watch. The buyers — neighborhood grocers, Philadelphia restaurant suppliers, and immigrant caterers — examine the late-August produce. Auction markets don’t guarantee good returns. One day in mid-August, corn at the Leola market started at $2.50 a dozen and slipped to 50 cents, when trading stopped for lack of buyers, recounts Becky Clawson, a state extension agent. The food is then donated to the Chester County Food Bank. She checked stands at Lancaster Central Market the following Saturday and found the glut hadn’t affected the retail price there of local sweet corn for urban buyers. That’s how strong demand is for fresh local produce. “Nobody has what these guys do; nobody can compare,” says Tomm Stone, a veteran produce buyer who

fills orders for businesses such as the century-old Wolff’s Apple House produce market near Media and Yates produce distributor in West Grove, as well as wholesalers and markets in the Philadelphia and Baltimore areas. He also visits the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Center and the Vineland Cooperative Produce Auction, larger markets that handle bigger growers for customers including supermarket chains. Remote buyers give broker Stone a ceiling price on each item they need. For a 3% cut, he buys them boxes and skids of produce, filling trailers. Though the pandemic boosted prices, they have come back to earth. “Nobody can figure out what prices will do” on a given day, adds Stone, one of the few of the hundreds at Oxford on a recent Tuesday who arrived wearing a face mask. The market is also open on Thursdays and Fridays. But regular visitors get a feel, Stone adds, showing a long list on his smartphone of the day’s produce offerings by farmers with familiar Amish names: Beiler, Esh, Lapp, Martin, a couple of Zooks, and no fewer than eight Stoltzfuses. Also Milburn Orchards of Elkton, Md., one of the many non-Amish businesses within a hundred-mile radius that also sell here. “Ike Stoltzus has seven sons. Every one of them is an excellent grower. And they’ve all been able to stay right around here,” Stone said, marveling at how the auction has helped keep the family from scattering. The growers aren’t necessarily “organic.” Many are certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as following GAP — Good Agricultural Practices, auditor-certified for avoiding food safety and chemical hazards. Some growers, known by their assigned numbers tagged on every lot, are so well-respected their boxes start at and get higher prices. “I’m here buying jitomates for the salsa,” says Cristobal Castaneda, who arrived in the area as a laborer in the mushroom sheds and has developed a catering business called Taste of Puebla in Kennett Square. He used the Mexican word for red tomatoes. In southern Chester County, customers have come to expect excellent produce, he says. The Oxford bidding space is less than a quarter of the size of the Vineland auction in Cumberland County, N.J., a 90-year-old seasonal trading floor in the heart of that historically Italian American farm community, where buyers include large grocery chains. “The Block,” as the 80-year-old farm auction in Laurel, Del., is known, attracts Amish growers and others along the Delmarva peninsula. The farm auction in Swedesboro, N.J., closed in 2010 as tomato fields have given way to warehouses along U.S. 322 in Gloucester County. The Oxford market remains open in the winter for one day, Friday. It can open that day due to the proliferation of greenhouses in the area, warmed by ground pipes heated by propane or by beech and oak from local woodlots. The Amish generally eschew big electric or phone services, favoring spring-wound, solar, bottled-gas, or battery-powered motors and other unplugged technologies. At the market in Oxford at 190 Union School Road, auctioneer David Longenecker walks the rows as he delivers his pitch. Colleague Alvin Fisher, in straw hat and red shirt, works one row over, making his sales. Longenecker’s wife, Amish-born Ophra Rose, leads auctions on Fridays. “Dollar bill, fifty, dollar thirty-five, sixty-five, seventy-five, sold, sixty-five annnd a buck,” sings Longenecker. “Fifty-five, sixty-five, eighty,” calls out Fisher, his back to Longenecker’s, pointing at bidders as his bonneted, long-skirted assistant marks the bids and lot numbers down. “Make it a dollar bill,” he coaxes. Longenecker has moved on: “All right, we got melons. Dollar, dollar fifty, one seventy-five, sold, one-fifty.” ©2021 The Philadelphia Inquirer, LLC. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

How penny stocks are traded — and why they’re so risky for investors by Giovanny Moreano

Penny stocks are small companies whose shares trade for a relatively low price and often on thin volume. They are considered speculative investments and can be highly volatile, Investing appealing to traders trying to capture outsized returns. However, the losses can be just as severe. But not all penny stocks are the same,

and one factor that sets them apart is where they trade. How are penny stocks traded? According to the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), penny stocks are shares of equities that trade for under $5. Some of these companies are new to the market, may not have complete financial records, or lack a solid product, service or revenue stream. In certain instances,

some of them could even be going through bankruptcy filings. Companies with all their documents in order can list on major stock exchanges like the NYSE or NASDAQ, which have strict rules, such as frequently disclosing financial statements with the SEC. Since most penny stock issuers do not qualify to list on a large exchange, their shares trade over the counter (OTC) via

for up to 180 days with no late fees and an additional 180-day extension if they request it through their online accounts. Other steps you could take now if you can’t pay your loans Talking with your lender as soon as possible is one of the most effective ways to get immediate payment relief during financial hardship. In addition to setting up payment deferment or forbearance, there are a few other steps you can take if you can’t pay your loans: -Apply for unemployment benefits: The March 2021 American Rescue Plan Act increases the total number of weeks that individuals can collect unemployment benefits to 79 weeks. It also provides an additional $300 weekly benefit for those who are unemployed through Sept. 6. -Cut discretionary spending: Review all of your nonessential spending, like dining out, shopping and streaming subscriptions. Find areas that you can cut from

your monthly budget to free up money for loan payments. -Refinance your loans: If you have strong credit, you might be eligible for current low interest rates. Refinancing can help reduce your interest rate and lower your monthly payment. -Consider a coronavirus hardship loan: Available from some banks and credit unions, coronavirus hardship loans are short-term loans that typically have low or no interest. While the loan amounts aren’t very large, these loans do come with favorable terms for borrowers. Regardless of what type of loan you’re struggling with, there’s a good chance that your lender has options that can relieve some of the financial pressure. The best move is to contact your lender if you already know you won’t make your next loan payment. ©2021 Bankrate.com. Distributed by Tribune Content Agency, LLC.

the OTC Bulletin Board (OTCBB), an electronic trading service managed by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, or via the private Pink Sheets marketplace. For the penny stock issuers that file financial statements with the SEC, their ticker symbols start with an “OB” suffix on the OTCBB. For penny stocks trading on the Pink Sheets platform, their ticker symbols have a “PK” suffix. For retail investors, it’s important to note that over-the-counter trading takes place between parties outside a major stock exchange and without the supervision of an exchange regulator or a market maker to ensure liquidity in the stock. The absence of a more stringent listing process and low liquidity, for example, open the door for numerous risks such as potential market manipulation. What other factors make penny stocks risky? Investors often rely on publicly available information to assess a potential investment opportunity. This information can be from reputable news outlets, a broker’s research team, SEC filings, and so on. However, these materials can be hard to find for small companies and may not always come from trustworthy sources. Since some of the penny stock issuers are newly formed, historical data isn’t likely to be available, making it challenging for investors to assess current and future valuations. Similarly, not all penny-stock comContinued on page 26.

Passing down the family business requires planning and a little formality by Jasmine Heimgartner

After potentially decades of building a successful business, passing the torch is typically not an easy decision. When the succession plan involves family members, it can ease some of the headache but still requires a neutral approach to ensure the business continues to flourish. “The hardest thing about business succession planning is you have people making lots of decisions every day with respect to their business, but they aren’t usually the people who stop and think about themselves,” said Dan Pauley, Fraser Stryker attorney. “They are used to wearing multiple hats. For them to just stop and think about what they want out of life is not an easy thing. There a lot of emotions involved. When it is family succession, there can also be expectations from a kid’s perspective and from the parent’s expectation.” While every situation is different, a successful transition requires collaboration from team players. If the right team is in place, it makes dealing with the changing dynamics clearer for everyone involved. “It is important that the skills of the owner be distributed among the leadership team and not with just one or two people, and we consider the same thing when we look at family businesses,” said Katie Todd, The McFarland Group project manager. “Is there an ability of the family member moving into ownership to operate in an ownership capacity, and are they qualified to lead the next team of leaders?

We find that some family members say they would love to be in ownership but not in a leadership position. That allows the conversation to direct the succession plan.” While family nuances may make an informal plan seem easier, it may have long-lasting effects that can be dealt with beforehand with a neutral, head-on approach that is more formal. “If you are a famPauley ily member and the heir apparent, it’s important that you are capable and demonstrate your capabilities in ownership as well as have a team of people who support you in your development and help you grow,” Todd said. “If you start early, it gives the company and team time to transfer into roles that they may not be in yet. It allows the professional team to get to know the succession team and not get spooked when the transition. It creates a level of comfort and camaraderie that is necessary for a business to be successful.

comes to a family business is deciding how to have equitable allocation for children. “When it comes to the effort and relationship with the company, it doesn’t make sense to award stock in a company that a sibling isn’t interested in,” Todd said. “The value is growing because of the efforts of successor. We recommend that family members who are not active do not receive equity as majority owners. If they do, set it up so they don’t have any controlling vote. That is probably the most frustrating for people involved in the day to day.” Luckily, passing down a family business offers the advantage to gift ownership. This allows for flexibility and to create a plan that benefits past, present and future parties. “The business owner can structure non-compensation plans or salary plans that state as an owner, even as minority, they retain the benefit of having health insurance covered or having other company benefits and not have to exit entirely,” Todd said. “There is an opportunity to set yourself up in retirement. If you can plan for seven years, the performance metrics tied continue to grow. You harvest more distributions, which goes into your retirement.”

As a result, these businesses may not receive the same level of investor oversight as more established names like blue-chip stocks. Pink Sheet stocks are thought to be the riskiest because issuers are not required to disclose any financial information. Low trading volumes also provide opportunities for astute traders to take advantage of volatility — often driving prices on penny stocks artificially higher (or sometimes lower). For example, in a “pump-and-dump” scheme, traders will incentivize investors to get in on the next “hot stock,” causing the share price to rise quickly as buying orders come in. But when investors come to their senses and realize the inflated prices are likely unwarranted,

Without it, it can lead to defection and losing good talent.” Even if retirement or slowly backing away from everyday operations may be off in the distant, businesses should start planning for succession a minimum of three years beforehand, but preferably five to seven. “Key elements are identifying a timeline or timeframe for how this succession is going Todd to start and when it will end,” Pauley said. “It also requires a collaborative team with an attorney, CPA, financial adviser and insurance. There is a process, but you want to be ready for when the time comes. Owners have to consider how different their lifestyle will be. Perhaps they are running car payments or other payments through the business. Once the transition happens, going through this process better ensures that what the owner is trying to achieve is accomplished.” Another sensitive nuance when it

those stocks often come crashing down, leaving those who bought at high levels holding the bag. Are penny stocks a good investment? For small businesses, listing their stock publicly helps them access public funding, which can be their lifeline as they attempt to grow. And for investors, supporting the companies that succeed can be lucrative – particularly if those products or services really take off. Of course, for investors, identifying a winner in a sea of penny stocks could be viewed as finding a needle in a haystack. When it comes to penny stocks, the appeal for traders is the potential for making significant returns with small amounts of capital. So, while a large stock like Apple typically trades within a 2 percent range over the course of a day or week, a penny stock could see its shares move north of 10 percent or more in either direction during a single day. Because of the added volatility and the low share price, many penny stock traders see it as an opportunity to make quick profits. And to mitigate the risk associated with companies trading over the counter, they go after penny stocks listed on large exchanges like the NYSE. There are plenty of strategies on how to trade penny stocks. But, like other investments, it’s always prudent to do your homework, look at the financial filings, start small, and avoid letting greed or fear influence your decision-making. ©2021 Bankrate.com. In many ways, the legal system slowed down over the past year. So, it was important for us to advocate for our clients and continue pushing to get their cases resolved.” Dornan started the firm based out of 1403 Farnam St. in Omaha in 2007 with another attorney and an office administrator. Today, the firm employs 13 attorneys and 11 paralegal and support staff. “Our firm doesn’t have institutional clients — we don’t represent large businesses or banks that would provide our firm with a steady revenue stream,” Dornan said. “Instead, we rely on providing our clients with excellent legal representation and exceptional service. We have found that when our clients have a great experience with us, they return to us for help in other legal areas.” For instance, he recalled how a client they helped with a business matter will turn to them in the future if they need help with a personal injury claim following a car accident. “Other law firms may specialize in MBJ-REBRAND-2021.qxp_GIVING ADS out 8/31/21 one area of law and refer that work to another law firm,” he added. “At Dornan

So, we anticipate additional hiring soon to handle all the work.” Those attorneys (and staff) also spend a lot of time in the community volunteering with various community and legal organizations. “We do a great deal of pro-bono work, especially in our criminal and immigration law groups,” Dornan said. “We love Omaha and Nebraska, and do what we can to make our community a great place to live and work.”

REGIONAL LANDSCAPES

Briefs…

First National Bank of Omaha will be joining a new digital lending platform launched by Citi dedicated to expanding access to capital and financial services for small business owners. The first-of-its-kind platform, Bridge built by Citi, will match local and regional banks with local small businesses in need of capital for improvements and expansion post-pandemic. A total of 18 local banks across the Southeast and Rockies region are currently participating on the platform. The Rotary Club of Omaha will be setting up the 9/11 Tribute of Flags Omaha in Memorial Park again this year. This tradition was started in our community by Lynn Castrianno as a way to honor her brother, Leonard Castrianno, who was killed in the World Trade Center. This is the 17th consecutive year of the tribute. The attack on Sept. 11, 2001, killed 2,977 people. Each flag bears the name and age of a victim, the location of where they died and personal

information. The flags of those who have a Nebraska connection will be placed in a special section. Home Instead has acquired Honor Technology, Inc. The combined organization represents more than $2.1 billion in home care services revenue. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Honor’s technology and operations platform, paired with Home Instead’s leading global network, training leadership and relationship-based care, will serve as a foundation for an increase in innovation to benefit caregivers and clients through expanded offerings. To drive innovation, Honor will substantially increase its investment in research and development through engineering and technology.
